Trip’s Diner in Seminole has closed and is now the Apple Butter Cafe

  • Maggie Duffy Times staff

SEMINOLE — On a bright Wednesday morning, customers streamed in and out of the Apple Butter Cafe for its grand opening. Many had been there before as regulars of the space’s former restaurant: Trip’s Diner.

Former Trip’s employee Shannon Lee purchased the place Jan. 23 and has changed the restaurant’s name. The new spot’s vibe is similar to Trip’s, with breakfast and lunch served daily. Menu items include specials like a chili cheese omelette, a French dip and a fork-and-knife chili cheese dog.

Lee, who is 43, worked at the Seminole Trip’s since the day it opened and has been a server for 27 years.

It’s been her lifelong dream to own a restaurant, she said, something the former owner, Gordon Stevenson, knew. When he approached her about buying the restaurant, he told her he wanted to make her dream a reality.

“He made it very possible for me to do (it), and here I am,” Lee said.

I DID A THING TODAY... I'm officially a Restaurant owner. I just closed on the deal. I've wanted my own Restaurant... Posted by Shannon Lee on  Monday, January 23, 2023

Lee has lived in Seminole her whole life, and many of the new spot’s customers so far are her longtime regulars. She retained all of the former Trip’s staff, which Lee said made the transition easy.

She wanted to keep the neighborhood restaurant feel with Apple Butter Cafe: people at the counter drinking coffee, watching the news and striking up conversation with each other.

“I want it to be that place where friends meet new and old friends,” she said.

This sale won’t affect the other two Trip’s locations in Tampa (6416 N Florida Ave.) and St. Petersburg (2339 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N), which are open for business as usual.

Those locations were acquired in January by Phillip Ingram, who said Trip’s isn’t going anywhere. He said one of the missions of his company, Sunshine City Foods, is to preserve the local iconic restaurant brands for decades to come. The company also bought Lonni’s Sandwiches in downtown St. Petersburg two years ago.

Apple Butter Cafe is open 7 a.m.-3 p.m. daily. 10555 Park Blvd., Seminole. 727-258-7033.

Trip's Diner (Seminole)

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

When on vacation make a point of eating at Trips. This time for brunch, my wife was very pleased with her spinach+ omelet, and I was very satisfied with my hash+ omelet. Due to covid, only a short trip, this time. Will be back again.

My wife and I ate there on a Thursday and I realized I had dropped or left my credit card the next day. I had little hope of the card being turned in when I called, but was happily proven wrong. When we got to... the diner I identified myself and this wonderfully nice employee, Tammy, said she found the card I had left on the counter and put it away for safe keeping. She resisted the money I gave her for her honesty, but I insisted. I cannot thank Tammy enough. Now, the diner. They have an extensive menu and the prices are unbelievably low. The food is the best as are the waitresses we had on each visit. More

The breakfast was fantastic, the Club sandwich was subpar, dry bread, salty ham, bacon overdone. The coleslaw was good. Our server was excellent and friendly. Although super busy with a wait list, the food came out quickly and hot. Very busy with a line to... pay our tab. Free on-site parking. More

We love diners so thought we'd give Trip's a try. The food was ok but not the best diner food I've ever had. The prices were very reasonable. The service was excellent. I would give them another try but would probably try a breakfast meal... since that's what most people seemed to order. More

We’ve frequented Tripp’s every time we’re at our second home here just around the corner from the diner. We not only rave about it to our guests, but they rave about it to others when they leave. Haven’t had a bad meal here yet! Even... when there is a wait they are efficient and it’s never too long. Thank you for the good service and even better food!! Happy customers here. More

Great breakfast! We enjoyed it so much we went back the next day before we headed back to Illinois. Shannon, our waitress, was the best! She couldn't have made us feel more welcome. Super friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. She chatted... about her visit to Chicago. My only regret is that I didn't get a piece of that 3 inch thick award winning apple crisp. I'm sure if Shannon would have seen me eyeing it, I'd have it in the car with me right now. So if you go...get some and report back!! It looked amazing! More

Amazing breakfast and service. Our server was Rob and he was very nice and attentive. The food came out fast and it was delicious! I ordered the oatmeal, seasonal fruit and avocado toast. Coffee was great! My friend had pancakes, sausage patty, toast and scrambled... eggs. We will be back!! More

It’s always solidly a good place to eat breakfast. Omelettes are great, home fries always a good choice. But the star is the hubcap pancake. Prices are reasonable and so is the amount of food. Coffee is just ok. But that isn’t the main reason... for coming anyway. Fed our family of four (two teens) for $45. We could easily spend that at chick fil a and not have a nice friendly sit down experience. More

Absolutely the FRESHEST, most delicious, home made breakfast I have ever enjoyed! First time in. Won’t be the last. Karen was our server. So so super fun friendly and experienced! Very quick service, from the hostess, to Karen, and also the kitchen staff. Wonderful experience!... Must go!! More

Breakfast was not as good this 2nd visit. Avocado toast was not even edible. Soggy from the avocado paste. Should have used sliced avocado. Cheese grits were ok. Husbands breakfast platter was good Won't hurry back.

Fantastic breakfast Service was outstanding, food was delicious and portions exceptional . Cheesy grits are yummy, corned beef hash ( homemade and yummy) and service was wonderful

Thank you for the nice review!

The food is always well prepared comes out hot and on time. The variety on the menus will please every taste.

Our cousin knows we like diners(we’re from Jersey), so she took us to Trip’s Our server Kathy was very attentive as was the manager and another server that often walked by. Food was excellent as was the service. My husband had cheese grits along with... his eggs and bacon. I tasted them and have to say I have never had better grits. Creamy and done to perfection. My cousin and I choose the BST, bacon, spinach and fried green tomatoes. WOW was that good. All I can say is if you’re in the area try one of the three in the area. Next time we visit this is definitely one of our stops. More

Local dinner in traditional decor. Had breakfast which was not the best and overpriced for the quality of food. Service is average.

Everyone in our party ordered something different, and it all came from the kitchen hot at the same time; by the looks of their plates (licked clean), I would say that the meals were enjoyed. My husband ordered French toast, cheese grits, and bacon—I tried... the grits and will order them next time; the bacon was thick, but cooked well—not exactly crispy, but strangely enough, perfectly done and very flavorful. I had a chicken salad sandwich on toasted sourdough; the basil-mayo was a nice touch as were the candied pecans and grape halves. Because of its size, I was only able to eat half, but finished it up the next day for lunch. Yummy. Since we were a party of nine, we sat near the kitchen, really the only place where two tables could be moved together. We were able to see other tables’ orders being delivered, and I would say that their salads were huge and looked great. I love eating at restaurants where the servers are personable and helpful, and ours was both. We also had the owner, as well as a manager, stop by our table to thank us for eating there and to check to see that all the food was cooked to order. This is not a fancy place, just a comfortable diner with everyday food, served by friendly people—exactly what we needed to begin the weekend. More

Fire damages a Rhinelander restaurant

Fire crews outside R&T's Dinky Diner

Fire hit a Rhinelander restaurant yesterday evening.

Emergency crews responded to R&T’s Dinky Diner on Thayer Street around 6:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Smoke was seen coming from the building, and Thayer and Phillips Streets were blocked off for a time while the firefighting effort was underway.

WJFW Television reports crews moved from the diner to stairs leading to apartments above it, and that a ventilation hole had to be cut into the top of the building.

Crews from several area departments were on the scene, and started packing up around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Wednesday morning, the entrance to the diner was blocked with yellow tape.

The Rhinelander Fire Department says the diner is considered a total loss.

Adjacent apartments were evacuated safely, and no one was hurt.

Six residents have been temporarily displaced due to power and gas being turned off to the units.

The Red Cross is helping them with temporary shelter.

The cause of the fire is still being looked into.

Pittsburgh area swamped with flooding, sending crews to rescue several people from rising waters

By Michael Guise , Ron Smiley , Lauren Linder , Mike Darnay , Erika Stanish

Updated on: April 12, 2024 / 4:24 PM EDT / CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Torrential rains led to major flooding in the Pittsburgh area Thursday night into Friday morning, spurring several water rescues across the area.

Allegheny County Emergency Services says swift water response teams were activated Thursday evening after "life-threatening flooding." About two dozen rescues were made in Oakdale and South Fayette, the county says. So far, there haven't been any reported serious injuries or deaths.

Dozens of road closures were reported Thursday night, and many roads are still closed. Allegheny County officials said residents need to heed road closure barricades throughout the weekend and motorists should not try to drive through water.

Rivers aren't expected to crest at or near flood stage until early Saturday morning, the county says, and as the rivers continue to rise, streams and creeks feeding those rivers will begin to back up, threatening low-lying areas.

Citing the National Weather Service, Allegheny County says Thursday evening's rain totals "were at least a one in 10 to 20 year event."

Crews rescue people as Connoquenessing rises

The Connoquenessing started to rise overnight, leaving boat teams going from place to place  as they plucked people from porches  and front doors as the water kept coming. Harmony in Butler County saw significant flooding.

A couple in their 80s was taken from their home and while the boat trip wasn't very long, it got the husband and wife out of a growing trouble.

kdka-water-rescue.jpg

While flooding is common here neighbors and emergency officials said not like this.

"This one came up quicker than the last one," said Deputy Chief Doug Pickett from the Harmony Fire District. "The amount of rainfall and how saturated the ground was it rose quickly overnight and caught a lot of people off guard."

City of Washington declares state of emergency

The City of Washington Mayor JoJo Burgess declared a state of emergency following heavy rains on Friday morning and Thursday night.

"The mayor of the City of Washington has determined that due to the extraordinary rainfall and weather conditions, the residents and general public in the City of Washington are being subject to potential harm to their person and property," the proclamation read.

"Bathtub" and 10th Street Bypass close Downtown

The "Bathtub" section of I-376 westbound is closed due to rising flooding concerns in the area. All traffic approaching the "Bathtub" located between Grant Street and the Fort Pitt Bridge will be detoured.

According to a PennDOT spokesperson, the 10th Street Bypass is also closed to traffic. In addition to that closure, the northbound and southbound I-279 ramps to the 10th Street Bypass are closed as well.

PennDOT is recommending drivers use Fort Duquesne Boulevard to detour around the closure.

Lone Pine Country Club flooded

The lower-lying areas of the golf course along Park Avenue in Green Hills Borough, Washington County were heavily flooded early Friday morning.

Emergency shelter opened in Armstrong County

The Red Cross and the Salvation Army are operating an emergency shelter at the South Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company along Fire Hall Road in Freeport for residents displaced by flooding.

The shelter is open to everyone and all assistance is free.

Borough of Etna issues evacuation notice

The Borough of Etna has issued an evacuation notice on Thursday. The notice is for people living in flood zones or areas prone to flooding.

"Please leave the area and take any pets with you,"  a post on the borough's Facebook page said .

The post said people can go to Emmanuel Lutheran Church on Grant and Highland avenues if they need shelter.

"If you do not evacuate go to the highest floor of your home as emergency personnel may not be able to reach you to evacuate you. You may have to remain there until the flood waters recede. If you need assistance evacuating please call 911," the Facebook post went on to say.
