The main transatlantic and long-haul airports in Ireland are Dublin and to a lesser extent Shannon . The vast majority of transatlantic flights come through Dublin. There are also airports in Belfast , Cork , Kerry and Knock (Ireland West Airport) but these are for regional (European and UK) destinations only.

The Irish national carrier is Aer Lingus , though many international airlines do long-haul flights into Ireland. For European flights, Ryanair and Aer Lingus are the main two, though again there are countless other airlines operating flights from Ireland to the rest of Europe.

Private tours are tours that can depart on any date and visit almost any location in Ireland and Scotland. The major benefit of private tours is that you are in control. You set the pace of the tour, you decide on the locations to be visited and how long you wish to stay there. You typically won't meet other tourers on a private tour but you will have more free time to meet local people. If you don't mind the lack of a built-in social group (of a scheduled tour) there is no finer way to see Scotland and the entire island of Ireland. The freedom to go where you want, when you want and at your own pace is the main reason people choose private tours.

Freedom and flexibility

Unique itinerary, less social, option 2: book onto a scheduled tour.

Scheduled tours are tours that depart and arrive on preset dates and adhere to a set itinerary with little deviation. Hi, I am from Ireland's capital city, Dublin in the east of Ireland. My background is in historical walking tours of Dublin and coach tours around the island. I have always had a huge interest in Ireland's compelling history and charming culture. From Ireland's rebellious heroes to our great sporting, music & cultural achievements the island is bulging with stories to be told.

My hope is to be able to complement the incredible Irish scenery and heritage with Irish stories, historical anecdotes, yarns and music along your journey.

Growing up along the Wild Atlantic Way gave me a great appreciation of Irish history, culture and music and I have always felt that the hardship of our ancestors is reflected in the rugged landscape of Ireland.

A huge sports fan Rosie can be always found cheering on the Irish and Mayo teams in Gaelic Football, Gaelic Hurling, Rugby, Soccer and every other sport there is. Rosie knows Ireland intimately from her extensive travels around the country and is a huge fan of visiting the wild islands of the rugged west coast.

Your Dedicated Private Tour Planner from The Rebel County Niamh Crowley

Niamh grew up in a rural household in West Cork where in Summer, she forgot about town and worked either on the farm, in their family-run museum, or at home. Her parents owned the Arigideen Heritage Centre, which later became the Michael Collins Centre. Tales of faerie abductions, banshees and headless coachmen were etched into her imagination from an early age. 

After spending some time in Spain, she returned to Ireland in 2020 with a renewed appreciation for home. She has since lived in Doolin, County Clare, on Inis Mor in County Galway, and is currently based in Cork City.

Julian vignoles.

Julian Vignoles worked for over thirty years as a radio and television producer in RTÉ, Ireland’s national broadcaster. He started working in tourism in 2012, jointly founding a successful bike tour company in Dublin. He is the author of three books, including a biography of Ireland’s great blues guitarist, Rory Gallagher, published in 2018. He has a keen interest in all aspects of the Irish experience: history, geography, music and literature. He joined the team at Little Gem Tours in 2019.

Richard has been farming sheep and cattle for 20 years on the lands of Sliabh Ri and Boherard in Co Meath that have been farmed by his family for over 2 centuries. Growing up on the farm allowed him to play and learn among fairy forts, ruined monasteries, holy wells and ancient settlements.

Ruth’s background is in international sales & business development, for which she worked for many years, until 2020 when she decided to follow her passions and qualify as a National Tour Guide, Regional Coastal Guide, Mountaineering Ireland Lowland Leader, Irish Surfing Instructor and Leave No Trace Trainer.

Bobby is a native of Belfast , Born Bread and Buttered in Clonard on the Falls Road. He has been married for 32 years and has 5 adult children and has worked on the road in the city for 28 years serving communities on both sides of the fence in the heart of Belfast City. Until 20 years ago tourists tended not to venture North of the border and only those in the north were privy to its extraordinary beauty. The only visitors that visited during the times of the troubles were Journalists.

19 years ago it all changed with the signing of the Good Friday Agreement and suddenly tourists from around the world learned of the marvellous secret that is Northern Ireland. From this point he has been guiding visitors across the north providing insights into it's politics, history and exploring it's hidden gems along the way.

Cork actor uses his own tour guide experience for Meltdown show 

Jack Walsh brings Welcome to Ireland – Meltdown of an Irish Tour Guide to Cork Arts Theatre.

Cork-born Jack Walsh (Jimmy in Killnaskully) knows all about the ups and downs of the life of an actor. Because of the inevitability of ‘resting’ periods, the 68-year-old decided to become a part-time tour guide, selling brand Ireland “with enchanting tales of ceol and craic” by day while by night, he was hunkering down in his damp Capel Street flat in Dublin, threatened with eviction because of rising rent.

But never one to miss an opportunity, Walsh has parlayed his story into a one man show, Welcome to Ireland – Meltdown of an Irish Tour Guide, which he will perform at the Cork Arts Theatre on August 7-10.

Walsh could have had an easier life. “As a young fellow from Ballinlough, I hadn’t a clue about theatre. I thought the Cork Opera House was just for fur coats, a cliché I heard along the way.” 

After leaving school, Walsh got a job in a bank. “In those days, that was like a ticket to heaven. But I hated it. It took me a few years to be courageous enough to leave. I transferred to Dublin and enjoyed myself for a while.” 

But Walsh realised he wasn’t at all suited to working in the bank. He fell in love with a woman who broke his heart. To try and get over her, Walsh took night classes in creative writing. He remembered a passing comment that his ex-girlfriend made, saying he’d be good at drama. He joined a drama class.

“I didn’t really know plays but I was a good mimic.” Encouraged to pursue acting by a former head of drama at RTÉ, Walsh studied theatre with Deirdre O’Connell who founded the Focus Theatre. “It was the Stanislavski method, all very internal. It was really good for me to do. Eventually, I started doing mime classes with two guys who had been at the Marcel Marceau school in Paris.”

 Lured by tales of great fun, parties, the charisma of Marceau and his theatrical technique, Walsh moved to Paris to study with the late French mime artist.

“At the time, mime in Ireland was sort of street corner stuff. In Paris, I came to realise that for the French, mime was an art form, right up there with painting. Marceau was amazing. I remember that he was in the Theatre de Champs Elysées for a month. He would do two-and-a-half hour-long shows on his own with no words. The place was full every night. He had such magnetism. The funny thing was there were people who were better at technique but he had a mixture of confidence and bravado, storytelling talent and an artistic knowledge that was unrivalled.” 

Walsh spent three years with Marceau, travelling to the US and Italy, working as an assistant to him. Walsh enjoyed the company of Marceau who, funnily enough, would never stop talking once he was off the stage.

About ten years ago, Walsh, divorced, was living in private rented accommodation in Dublin, feeling financially insecure. He had spotted tour guides and took himself off to Fáilte Ireland where he completed a course that allowed him to act as a guide to the city, often to groups of up to fifty people from cruise liners. It gave him plenty of fodder for his show in which he plays historical figures, tourists, landlords and a tour guide in danger of homelessness. These days Walsh still does occasional tour guides, but to smaller groups of people.

This grandfather points to the irony of talking up Ireland while rents are sky high and there is a housing crisis. He doesn’t want to give away the ending of his show. Suffice to say, this sometime tour guide is in a better place.

“But there was a long time when things were extremely hairy and touch and go. There was an element of couch surfing as well which, when you’re older, is quite humiliating.”

 However, Walsh doesn’t regret his career choice but feels sorry for young people starting out. “It’s harder for young people today to follow their hearts. When I was twenty, if you had any sort of a job, you could get by and rent some sort of a bedsit. We don’t have bedsits anymore. There used to be places to live; loads of council houses for people that needed them and loads of flats. I can get a bit angry about the way things are now.” 

Walsh says that everyone in the Dáil should see his show. It may be humorous but it also shines a light on living conditions in twenty-first century Ireland.

I also spent two years in Italy, both in Rome and Sorrento. I no longer speak Italian, but I can understand it and absolutely love listening to it. I am a historian and postdoctoral researcher based in Dublin city offering tours of the city focusing on the modern period - approximately the last 250 years. I completed my PhD in Public History at Trinity College, Dublin, where I studied how history was used to create different identities in the two Irish states after partition. I chose to study public history because I am really passionate about connecting the public with the history all around us and engaging them with it in their everyday life. I have over 7 years of experience working within the tourism industry, many of those were spent devising new tour scripts and completely overhauling the backstage tours at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin (Ireland's national theatre), where I worked for over 4 years. At the Abbey I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to develop a whole new revenue stream for the company based around boutique experiences at the theatre ranging from VIP nights, meet & greets, and historical talks. There I developed crucial skills in communicating and engaging a range of different groups and demographics, from intimate tours for the former UN Ambassador Samantha Power and an tÚachtarán Michael D. Higgins to larger tours for groups of active retirees with varying levels of accessibility. Since leaving the Abbey I have worked as a local tour leader for Peter Sommers Travel, a guide for the National Museum of Ireland and the 1916 Walking Tour, and Glasnevin Cemetery, and as a freelance tour guide. I have curated bespoke experiences for guests visiting Dublin such as a walking tour of the city designed with their interests in mind. I have worked with a variety of tour operators to ensure that their important guests had an enjoyable and educational experience.
