Princess Anne to visit Canada's oldest regiment in New Brunswick this weekend

Princess Louise, the mare that was once the mascot of the 8th Canadian Hussars , never met the calvary regiment's horse-loving colonel-in-chief. But this weekend the cherished horse will be present in photos and in memories as the colonel-in-chief, Princess Anne, visits to mark the 175th anniversary of the regiment based in southern New Brunswick.

Princess Anne, sister to King Charles and a former Olympic equestrian rider, was appointed to her role with the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's) regiment in June 1972, when she was just 21. She has visited the unit several times and maintained a close relationship with it.

On this visit she is scheduled to take part in events from Friday through Sunday in Moncton, N.B., and Sussex, N.B., meeting with regiment members past and present and taking in a commemorative concert, a parade and a gala dinner.

James Lockyer, the regiment's honorary colonel, said the unit has a record of service and sacrifice. "Its formation back in 1848, as a response to expansionist American ideology flowing from the Revolutionary War, and then picking up again during the Civil War, was quite remarkable," he said in an interview.

"These were townsfolk, craftsmen, artisans, farmers who came together to defend New Brunswick at that time, and then subsequently, Canada. We are the oldest, continuous serving army regiment in Canada."

During the regiment's deployment in the Second World War, about a night after taking Coriano Ridge, in Italy in 1944, mechanics who were working under cover of darkness to recover tanks heard a screaming sound, he said, recalling the incident that brought Princess Louise to the regiment.

The mechanics who went to investigate found a three-month-old injured foal circling its dead mother. They brought the horse back to the unit's doctor, who though not a veterinarian, treated it.

"Having a mascot during the Second World War was prohibited," Lockyer said. "But the regiment did it anyway."

The horse travelled with the regiment through Europe in a modified three-ton truck with a false wall, and made its way back to Canada after the war in March 1946.

Mike Bickerton remembers how fond his father, retired Sgt. Gordon Bickerton, was of Princess Louise. Gordon Bickerton, a Second World War veteran who is at the Ridgewood Veterans Health Wing, in Saint John, N.B., turns 103 on June 9.

"They had quite a relationship," his son said. "Father had taught it to say its age by stamping its foot. Cigarettes and sugar cubes were a favourite treat for the horse, which Father used to carry in his pocket and usually feed the horse."

Bickerton, born in England, was a driver during the Second World War serving from 1941 until after the end of the conflict, and joined the 8th Canadian Hussars in 1948 as a mechanic, said his son.

"It was then that he got involved with taking care of the horse." The horse provided a lifelong companionship to not just his father but the entire family, he said in an interview from Norton, N.B.

Lockyer said the horse also helped the soldiers. "It's something belonging to the regiment that everybody can associate with and everybody can embrace," he said.

Lockyer, who later served as New Brunswick justice minister, encountered Princess Louise after being transferred to the reserve unit in September 1968.

"She was very much a military horse. Whenever the band struck up to begin a march past or something, you could automatically see the horse come alive and she would prance in the course of the march .... It was quite something to see."

The horse died in 1973, but Lockyer said she will be present in photos and a video to celebrate the regiment's 175th year during Princess Anne's visit over the weekend. Though Anne never met the horse, she "certainly knows about her," Lockyer said.

"It's part of the historical profile. This weekend is all about history. It's all about who we were, what we were and the original family, including the mascot, so it'll be front and centre in the history."

Gordon Bickerton, the caretaker of the beloved mascot, is in failing health and will not be able to travel to meet the princess this weekend. But his son, who was a sergeant in the 8th Canadian Hussars from 1961 to 1964, plans to be "in the audience somewhere" over the weekend.

"It's just going to be really sad that Father won't be able to meet Princess Anne," he said. "It's certainly unfortunate."

New Brunswick will be hosting royalty next month in a celebration to mark the 175th anniversary of the 8th Canadian Hussars.

The Princess Royal has served as Colonel-in-Chief of the storied reserve unit since 1972 and the regiment will also celebrate her 50th year in the role.

She last visited the regiment in 1998 for the 150th anniversary in Moncton.

Royal Visits

Members of the Royal Family have honoured Sussex with various memorable visits, during which the community would bring out the best of what Sussex had to offer. The Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII, visited New Brunswick during his tour of Canada in 1860. The Marquis of Lorne and his wife, Princess Louise, visited Sussex in 1879. In honour of this visit, the name of the 8th Cavalry Regiment based in Camp Sussex was changed to 8th Princess Louise’s Regiment of Cavalry. The first tour of Canada by a reigning monarch was made by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939 during which the Royal Train made an official stop in Sussex. In 1985, Prince Andrew opened the Dominion Building as the Town Hall. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip visited Sussex in 2002 as part of the Jubilee visit to Canada. From one Spare to another: what Harry could learn from his aunt Princess Anne

By Eilidh Hargreaves

Prince Harry, the Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence arrive at Windsor Castle for the Committal Service for Queen Elizabeth II

Oh, Harold. You’ve done them all: Willy and Pa, Camilla and Kate. The Taliban. The cougar. ‘The British Press, British Press, British Press’. Yet there is still apparently more to say.

Like the Duke of Sussex, leading American broadcast journalist Anderson Cooper knows the struggle of being born to a mother haunted by her name, fame and fabulous privilege

article image

For his appearance on Stephen Colbert’s  The Late Show , Prince Harry arrived to pre-record the interview in New York armed with a Glock-carrying security guard, sat before a live audience double-parked with a tequila in each hand as if it really were Mahiki 2002, and told all again-again. This latest interview follows a 90-minute sit down with  ITV ’s Tom Bradby, a 30-minute segment with Anderson Cooper on  60 Minutes and an appearance on  Good Morning America . Then there’s the recently revealed People cover and interview.

Together with Meghan, he’s developed you-and-I-against-the-world syndrome: a battle that no one can win. The Sussexes find themselves isolated in their beautiful, Soho House-scented $13 million Montecito mansion. But Harry was loved and supported by Britain and, until this, he might have been again.

‘The Harry I knew was so entrenched and popular with the British public that it’s a huge sadness that it has come to this. It could have been very different,’ says an old friend and colleague. What happened to our lovable rogue? The helicopter-piloting action man? Controversy was never far, but even after the prince’s 2012 naked romp in Vegas, 12,000 British soldiers posted photos saluting in various states of undress in solidarity. Now they implore ‘shut up’ as he breaks Omerta - the code of silence - to proclaim his killings, all while lambasting the future King for allegedly knocking him to the floor. (But it’s ok: he told People it is for the purpose of healing.)

What Harry really needs is to be brought back down to earth. A tête-à-tête with someone who gets it (admittedly, there can’t be many). He needs the Princess Royal: famously frank, steadfastly loyal… a fellow spare.

‘He really ought to talk to Princess Anne,’ a friend of the Royal Family told the  Times . ‘She often talked about how, as children, she was treated so differently to Charles. She was second to him and kicked further down the line of succession as a woman, but she forged her own path. In her twenties she was bolshy and upset about a lot of things, but she came through that. He should talk to her about her experiences. She is shrewd, she could tell him a lot about what she went through.’

Anne doesn’t get a look in in  Spare , the book. She is mentioned only twice - as precedent for marrying a divorcée and as the only family member left waiting for him as he arrived at Balmoral shortly after the Queen died. But she is the ultimate example of success as a secondary. And that’s big: it can’t be easy to be born to support, rather than take on the leading role. At times it must have felt unfair - clearly Harry has experienced this with fervour - but acceptance is the only way.

Two spares the Princess Royal and Princess Margaret Countess of Snowdon

Two spares: the Princess Royal and Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon

In the book, Harry describes kinship with another spare, Princess Margaret: ‘As I grew older, it struck me that Aunt Margo and I should’ve been friends,’ Harry wrote. ‘We had so much in common. Two Spares. Her relationship with Granny wasn’t an exact analogue of mine with Willy, but pretty close. The simmering rivalry, the intense competition (driven largely by the older sibling), it all looked familiar. Aunt Margo also wasn’t that dissimilar from Mummy. Both rebels, both labelled as sirens… So my first thought when I learned in early 2002 that she’d been taken ill was to wish there’d been more time to get to know her.’

princess anne visit to sussex

By Stephanie Bridger-Linning

But he’s missing a trick: at 72, Anne is still alive and kicking - and hugely respected. It is she, the spare  and  divorcée, who was entrusted to guard the Queen’s body on the three-day journey from Balmoral to Westminster last September. Harry will run out of tales to sell but what the Princess Royal has perfected is the art of longevity and an invaluable ability to hold things, and people, together. She is a calming constant.

Princess Anne supporting her brother at his investiture

Princess Anne supporting her brother at his investiture

Rambunctious and rebellious though she might have been in her younger years, the Princess Royal has come to be defined by her sense of duty. ‘She’s really the unsung hero of the family,’ says one insider. ‘She is the hardest working royal bar none, going around the world promoting Britain and the Commonwealth and sport. She did the job of a second queen.’ Her 300 patronages and engagement record (she attended over 300 engagements in 2021 and over 500 in one year at her peak) speak for themselves.

As attention was lavished on her siblings, Anne did not complain. She kept her head down and bloody well got on with it. Like the Queen, her love of horses and the outdoors kept her grounded at home on the Gatcombe Estate, Gloucestershire, and at equestrian competitions across the world.

If Harry wants to talk about love conquering all, Anne’s been there too. The affair she had with Commander Timothy Lawrence ended in a marriage still going strong today, for which she did not sacrifice her family. Even after their 1992 divorce Captain Mark Phillips continued to live on Gatcombe Estate until he moved to the United States.

The Princess Royal in Austria during a state visit with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip

‘She is the sort of woman you would want as a friend, as long as you were strong,’ Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of  Majesty magazine told me last year. ‘As she would tell you how it was and not necessarily what you wanted to hear. The Princess Royal is very like her late father Prince Philip: matter of fact, straight to the point and pragmatic. She is practical and gets irritated by stupidity. But she is understanding and loyal.’

princess anne visit to sussex

Anne is also just bloody good company. She is down to earth - serious when it counts - but she’ll make fun of anyone. Like Harry, ‘she was prone to the odd gaff in her younger days,’ says the insider. ‘But she's got that ability to just be so natural and chat to you. She’s got a mischievous sense of humour, like the Queen, and yet she’s also got her father’s stoic duty of supporting the monarch.’ What she is is rock-steady, and that ‘never complain never explain’ motto? It works for her, because she understands the long game.

Prince Harry's autobiography Spare is out today

Prince Harry's autobiography, Spare, is out today

Elsewhere, advice is on offer. ‘Let your good deeds do the talking,’ Princess Diana’s former private secretary, Patrick Jephson told Tatler late last year. ‘For most of her royal career, Princess Diana worked hard on a consistently busy programme of official engagements. We organised each event so that the media could report what she was doing and take really good photographs, to which she added her own spontaneous star quality. So you got the message at a glance - HIV/AIDS, leprosy, addiction, homelessness, land mines - without the need for lengthy explanation. Her work  was  the story and today it is her legacy.’

The Princess Royal has handed out honours at Windsor Castle as she continues with her royal duties the day after the King’s shock cancer diagnosis.

Anne is the first member of the family to perform royal duties since the news was made public on Monday evening.

Charles is regular treatment for an unknown form of cancer that was found during his recent stay in hospital for a procedure on an enlarged prostate. He has postponed all public dutie s and other members of the royal family are expected to take on additional engagements.

Known for her commitment to royal duties, Princess Anne carried out an investiture ceremony on Tuesday morning. She was also scheduled to visit the Midlands on Tuesday on an official visit, but the event was cancelled.

Ivor Bolton, from London, Conductor, is made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire by the Princess Royal at Windsor Castle

Recipients at the ceremony included conductor Ivor Bolton, tenor Nicky Spence, rugby union referee Sara Cox and wheelchair rugby league player James Simpson.

When it was announced Charles was due to undergo treatment for an enlarged prostate several weeks ago, Anne proved once again she was a reliable member of the family, taking on investiture ceremonies and continuing her royal visits.

She also took part in the first international royal tour of 2024 when she visited Sri Lanka in early January.

Officials have said that although Charles is stepping back from public-facing events, he will continue to “undertake state business and official paperwork as usual”.

This will include holding Privy Council meetings and weekly audiences with the prime minister.

The Prince of Wales is also returning to official duties this week, in the aftermath of the Princess of Wales’s abdominal surgery.

William is likely to be undertaking some duties on his father’s behalf, but Counsellors of State, who exercise power when a monarch cannot fulfil their duties as head of state, are not expected to be needed.

The Prince of Wales is returning to official duties this week, suggesting William is stepping up while his father is unwell

In the unlikely event they are appointed the King’s Counsellors of State are his spouse and the first four adults in line to the throne; Queen Camilla, Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew and Princess Beatrice.

The Duke of Sussex has cleared his diary to fly to the UK to be with his father despite their troubled relationship, raising concerns about the seriousness of the King’s health.

Prince Harry was seen arriving at a private terminal at LAX this morning in his black Range Rover and boarded a flight expected to land in the UK at around midday, the Sun reported.

Charles called both Harry and Prince William to tell them the news personally before it was made public at 6pm on Monday.

The Palace has called for the King’s privacy to be respected, especially during his treatment, but said he wanted to make his diagnosis public because of his long-running support for cancer charities.

This year got off to an unexpected start with the British royal family, with both Kate Middleton and King Charles hospitalized for medical conditions in January, and then the news of Charles's cancer diagnosis in February and a month later, Kate's cancer diagnosis .

In light of his cancer diagnosis , King Charles stepped back from public duties, as will the Princess of Wales , who is undergoing " preventative chemotherapy ." That makes the start of 2024 much quieter for the House of Windsor than normal, with two senior working royals effectively out of commission. In April 2024, the Palace announced Charles will return to public facing duties , and he's been carrying out a scaled-back diary of engagements, and in June 2024, Kensington Palace shared Kate hopes to attend a few engagements this summer despite continuing to receive cancer treatment.

Across the pond, 2024 is shaping up to be an interesting for year for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle . They have more projects in the works at Netflix , including a cooking show hosted by the Duchess of Sussex , and traveled to Canada in February for a series of events celebrating one year to go until the 2025 Invictus Games. Meghan is also set to launch a new brand, American Riviera Orchard .

Princess Anne Appears to Have Trouble With Her Horse at 2024 Trooping the Colour

Princess Anne at Trooping the Colour

Princess Anne appeared to have horse trouble during the 2024 Trooping the Colour parade in London on Saturday, June 15.

The Princess Royal rode horseback as part of the procession marking her brother King Charles III ‘s official birthday, but viewers of the royal event, which was broadcast live on the BBC in the U.K., noticed that Anne at one point struggled to keep her horse in check.

Anne took part in the royal parade with her brother, Prince Edward , the Duke of Edinburgh, and Prince William , the Prince of Wales.

William’s wife, Princess Kate Middleton , also made her first public appearance since announcing her cancer diagnosis in March during Saturday’s celebrations.

The Princess of Wales was spotted in a carriage leaving Buckingham Palace with her three children, Prince George, 10, daughter Princess Charlotte, 9, and son Prince Louis, 6, ahead of King Charles III ‘s official birthday procession through London.

Kate wore a white dress designed by Jenny Packham and a hat by Philip Treacy . She wore the Irish Guards’ official regimental brooch in honor of her position as Colonel of the Irish Guards.

Kate smiled and waved to the amassed crowd in a carriage behind King Charles and Queen Camilla . She and her children then disembarked the carriage to watch the official parade which began at 11 a.m. local time.

Kate, 42, confirmed on Friday, June 14, that she would be in attendance.

“I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days,” she said in a statement. “On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.”

Kate previously missed a rehearsal for the event and apologized for planning to miss the celebration.

“I wanted to write and let you know how proud I am of the entire Regiment ahead of the Colonel’s Review and Trooping the Colour,” the Princess of Wales shared via the Irish Guards’ X profile on June 8. “I appreciate everyone trooping this year has been practicing for months, and dedicating many hours to ensuring their uniforms and drill are immaculate.”

Kate is the honorary Colonel of the Irish Guards, so she sent her “very best wishes” and “good luck” in the social media post.

“Being your Colonel remains a great honor and I’m very sorry that I’m unable to take the salute at this year’s Colonel’s Review,” she concluded. “Please pass my apologies to the whole Regiment, however, I do hope that I am able to represent you all once again very soon.”

The Irish Guards responded to Kate’s letter, sharing their “best wishes” as her recovery continues.

Princess Anne Looked Incredibly Cool on Horseback at Trooping the Colour 2024

Queen Elizabeth's only daughter is a skilled equestrian.

The Princess Royal, in her role as Colonel of The Blues and Royals, wore the Full Mounted Ceremonial uniform of the Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons). Per Buckingham Palace, she carried "the Gold Stick, along with the Colonel of The Life Guards who is the Gold Stick-in-Waiting for this year’s parade." In addition, Anne wore aiguilettes, signifying her role as a Personal Aide-de-Camp to her brother, King Charles .

Princess Anne, who competed in the equestrian events at the 1976 Olympics, was one of just three members of the royal family who rode on horseback at Trooping today, joining her brother Prince Edward and her nephew Prince William. Her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence , rode in a carriage with the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

At the coronation last year, Princess Anne also rode in the parade , serving in the ceremonial role of Gold Stick [in waiting]. Per the BBC, "The tradition of this role dates back to the 15th century, where two rods, one gold and one silver, would be placed by the monarch to protect them from danger. These roles are now only really used for such royal events, like the coronation, and is typically held by the Colonels of the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals."

At the time, the Princess Royal said in an interview, "Gold Stick was the original close protection officer. So that is a role I was asked if I'd like to do for this coronation, so I said yes. Not least of all, it solves my dress problem."

Breaking news, prince harry may be considering mending fences amid rumored uk home search: ‘only got one family’.

Prince Harry has started looking into finding a UK home after “suddenly” realizing that he’s only got one family, according to a royal expert.

The Duke of Sussex, 39, is reportedly eyeing properties across the pond that he and his wife, Meghan Markle, could keep for visiting instead of having to check into hotels each time.

Since handing over the keys to Frogmore Cottage last year, the Sussexes have not had a permanent place to stay in London.

“It’s something that he’s wanted and been thinking about. Now he’s probably made the decision that’s what he wants,” King Charles’ former butler Grant Harrold exclusively told The Post.

“Not having a home in the UK was probably a joint decision initially, but as time goes on, people’s views and decisions can change.”

“You’ve only got one family, and this means he’s suddenly realized that,” Harrold added.

Earlier this year, Harry  sensationally renounced his British residency  and  claimed America as his home in new paperwork , in which he declared that his “new country/state” was the “United States.”

The move was backdated to June 29, 2023 — the same day he and the “Suits” alum, 42,  officially vacated Frogmore Cottage , which left them with no UK residence in their names.

Experts have since speculated that the date listed is a blatant indicator that  his estranged father’s decision to evict the pair had hurt him .

“I’ve always said that Harry will probably return to the UK — his family are here, his friends are here, this is where he grew up,” Harrold said on behalf of Spin Genie .

“It’s very big moving to another country and not having any connection to your old home,” he said, adding that it “makes sense” for the Sussexes to have a residence in the area.

Since leaving the UK, the couple have set up camp in Montecito, California, where they’ve snapped up  a sprawling $14 million mansion  in which they raise son Prince Archie and daughter Princess Lilibet.

Harry’s desire to find a UK home could also be because of his estranged father’s health woes.

Charles, 75, has been battling an undisclosed form of cancer since February, and is reportedly “aware” that the clock on his reign is “ticking.”

Harry’s strained relationship with the Firm has only intensified within the past few years. He and Markle were not invited to the Trooping the Colour festivities this weekend for the second year in a row, he and estranged brother Prince William reportedly do not speak, and the Sussexes learned of Kate Middleton’s own cancer battle when the future queen revealed the news in an emotional video.

“They had no idea, and only learned of the news around the same time the rest of the world found out,” an insider disclosed to The Post in March. “This goes to show the irreparable damage they have caused.”

The insider added: “The trust has been broken, and the royal family is OK distancing themselves from them.”

The princess royal looked ready for summer.

Princess Anne has been embracing a more casual style of late,  rocking jeans and a check shirt on a recent day out at the Badminton Horse Trials, and her latest look is equally laidback.

The Princess Royal followed in her daughter Zara Tindall's fashion footsteps, opting to wear a pair of flared white jeans during a visit to Northern Ireland – just weeks after Zara rocked a similar style.

Anne, 73, proved that white jeans, which are timelessly popular with London's Sloane Ranger style set, work for every age – the preppy look never goes out of style.

While Zara wore her white jeans in a cropped style with a crisp white tee and navy blazer, Princess Anne opted to pair her flares with an oversized waterproof jacket and two scarves – she must have been extra chilly for her walk in the Northern Irish countryside.

Beneath her cosy outerwear, Anne added a blazer akin to Zara's. Accessory-wise, Princess Anne wore her simple stud earrings and carried a stylish black leather handbag.

Princess Anne's flared trousers

The Princess Royal's love of flares is a new development in her wardrobe. We're used to seeing King Charles' sister in slim-fit trousers and loafers, but her newfound appreciation of flares and bootcut jeans is a welcome addition to her much-admired style.

Princess Anne and Tim Lawrence at the Badminton Horse Trials

Zara Tindall and Princess Anne aren't the only royals who have shown a penchant for white jeans. Prince Edward's wife, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, has been known to wear white jeans for public engagements, while Meghan Markle's love of a monochrome look means white jeans are a staple for her .

Meghan wore a Ralph Lauren sweater vest with white skinny jeans

The light-coloured trousers are also a stalwart in any It-girl's wardrobe, so it's no surprise that Princess Kate regularly wore white jeans in her pre-royal life, often photographed walking on the King's Road in London wearing the style, often paired with a boho-inspired loose-fitting top and artfully dishevelled hair.

While the mussed-up look is popular among white jeans wearers, to create a casual look, we can't see Princess Anne departing from her now-signature hairstyle of a smart chignon – though in her younger days,  the royal did allow her long hair to tumble down on occasion, giving Princess Kate a run for her money in the glamour stakes!

We can't wait to see what Princess Anne wears next – fingers crossed she'll be able to put her scarves away for summer soon…

Princess Anne to visit Newfoundland for 100th anniversary of National War Memorial

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — Princess Anne will be in Newfoundland and Labrador next month to mark the 100th anniversary of the unveiling of the National War Memorial in St. John’s.

The July 1 anniversary will be particularly poignant, as the remains of an unidentified First World War soldier from what was then known as the Dominion of Newfoundland, will be entombed on the plateau of the memorial.

More than 12,000 people from the dominion served in various branches during the First World War; about 1,700 of them were killed, and more than 800 have no known grave.

The remains of the Unknown Soldier were returned from France last month and they will be laid to rest at a refurbished memorial site representing deceased Newfoundlanders and Labradorians from all branches of service who have no known grave.

Princess Anne, the sister of King Charles, is the colonel in chief of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and president of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Her July 1 visit also coincides with the province’s 75th anniversary of joining Canada.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 14, 2024.

Princess Beatrice accidentally exposes Prince Harry

The increasingly prominent royal has managed to achieve something that the Duke of Sussex still can’t get right.

Harry undergoes shock makeover

Harry undergoes shock makeover

In the brilliant UK satire The Windsors , ‘Fergie’ is constantly harassing people as she tries to flog her Right Royal Juicer, including hiding herself in a trunk and sneaking into a state banquet to crack the Chinese market.

It would be even funnier if it wasn’t, kinda, true.

The real Duchess of York really did launch a juicer in 2015 and she started popping up to enthusiastically bounce across pastel sofas on midmorning tele to sell the wonder gizmo, including a stint on the US home shopping network.

That blatant selling of oneself has now been knocked on the head, by no less than her own daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie .

In fact, the princesses are currently leading a younger royal movement away from that sort of crass exploitation and, in doing so, have coincidentally left a certain Californian couple looking even more like outliers.

Our story starts with LinkedIn where one Beatrice York’s page proudly reports she has worked for software giant Afiniti for more than seven years.

Members of the royal family who could take over from Charles

There is no clue to be found anywhere that she is ninth in line to the throne and or has ever seen King Charles in his summer shorts (now there’s an image).

Or take Peter Phillips who is an entrepreneur, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He would also happen to be the late Queen’s first grandchild and 18th in line to the throne.

Or if you search online you will come across artist Sarah Armstrong-Jones who has become quite the dab hand in abstract landscapes. She is also the King’s first cousin and Princess Margaret’s daughter.

Or if you should visit a certain Windsor nursery, you might be served by a minimum-wage earner named Louise; who is also the daughter of a prince (Edward, in case you are wondering) and 16th in line to the throne.

Princess Beatrice has left Prince Harry exposed. Picture: Getty, AFP

What is notable is that in none of these instances do royal ties of any stripe appear, with these younger Windsors all seemingly keen to define themselves by their abilities, their experience and their willingness to work for six quid an hour.

Meanwhile, over on gallery Hauser & Wirth’s website you can find a lengthy conversation between a ‘Eugenie York’ and artist Roni Horn about his work.

Though her title gets one mention, as first spotted by the excellent Patricia Treble of the excellent Write Royalty.

My point is, while sharing plenty of DNA with the King would obviously help a brave, young well-educated sort in the job market, they aren’t out there explicitly marketing themselves as such.

Anyone else feel a ‘but’ coming on?

The Sussexes’ US operations are another matter entirely.

Here we are, more than four years since they bolted for the Buckingham Palace exits and with them having served up a long-running royal insurgency and yet they are still using their royal titles in a commercial capacity.

When the duchess launched her American Riviera Orchard brand on Instagram in March, it was with the words “by Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex”.

Her jam business now joins a list of companies Meghan is involved with, including speaker firm the Henry Walker Agency, Netflix, Spotify, Wall Street firm Ethic, coaching company BetterUp and Penguin Random House.

One by one, as Harry and/or Meghan have become involved with these businesses, out have come their titles to be slapped all over eager press releases and websites.

On a purely pragmatic level, I get it.

The couple have bought themselves a $20 million house with a reported $14 million mortgage on top of which the UK government’s disinclination to pay for security for two people living in California left them with an estimated $5 million-plus annual security bill.

And what more valuable thing do Harry and Meghan possess than their titles?

What’s interesting though is the much more independent path that is being hewn and carved out by the rest of the duke’s cousins.

In the professional sphere, for Beatrice, Eugnie et al, their careers are not predicated on them having titles and they are not their defining, most saleable characteristic.

Sure, let’s not be naive here – their membership of the royal family would hardly hurt when it came to landing their jobs but they also have the requisite degrees, experience and the CVs.

The same goes for Zara Tindall, Princess Anne’s daughter and recent Buckingham Palace garden party star.

She has commercial deals with 16 brands and companies, according to her website, including Rolex and Land Rover and generally comes to Australia as a guest of the Magic Millions.

However, her pedigree as an equestrian is impeccable. She won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics and was part of the British team that took home silver at the 2014 World Equestrian Games.

Again, her royal links obviously only burnish things but she has proven herself as a sportswoman.

That’s not to say that navigating this line between the crown and cash is always quite so dignified and ethical.

In January 2020 her brother Peter Phillips was on the receiving end of a well-deserved drubbing after he starred in a horrendously gauche Chinese milk ad that referred to him as a “British Royal Family member”.

Peter Phillips poses in a Chinese milk ad. Picture: Supplied

Peter is something of a repeat offender on this front, with he and former wife Autumn reportedly being told off by the late Queen for selling the pictures from their 2008 wedding, unbeknownst to guests, to Hello! magazine for about $950,000.

Still what Beatrice, Eugneie and Zara are busy proving is that they want to have careers founded on their achievements, abilities and accomplishments and not the fact that they have repeatedly watched the King work his way through his boiled egg and soldiers in the Balmoral breakfast room.

Though should he ever want to wash that down with a freshly made juice, I know just who could help him out.

Princess Anne to visit St. John's to mark July 1 entombing of unknown soldier

Anne last visited province to mark centennial of beaumont-hamel, social sharing.

A smiling person.

The Newfoundland and Labrador government said Thursday Princess Anne will visit the province to mark the centennial of the National War Memorial and the entombing of an unknown soldier who died in the First World War.

The solemn ceremony will take place July 1, which is observed as Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as Canada Day.

Premier Andrew Furey called the visit part of a historic moment for the province.

"Her Royal Highness's presence will be especially symbolic as we gather to pay tribute to an unknown First World War soldier from this province…Soldiers from our province fought so bravely in the storied battlefields of the First World War that their Regiment earned the honour of 'Royal' in its name," Furey said in a statement.

"Together, we will remember the strength of those Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who served, fought, and died in all branches of the military and respective support services, especially those who have no known grave."

She will arrive in St. John's on June 30.

Anne's last visit to Newfoundland and Labrador came in 2016 to mark the 100th anniversary of the battle of Beaumont-Hamel.

The body of the unknown soldier will lie in state at Confederation Building from June 28-30 before reaching the tomb at the newly renovated National War Memorial on Water Street.

The Department of Municipal and Provincial also announced Thursday that a grant is now available for communities to purchase a memorial wreath to mark the unknown soldier. Grant funding is available until July 12.
