How one-way airline tickets can stretch your travel dollars

Jan 29, 2020 • 9 min read

one way travel en francais

For a long time, no matter where you were headed, it was difficult and expensive to put together a trip itinerary using one-way travel. One-way tickets make scheduling more difficult for airlines, so travelers trying to game the system with creative itineraries were often punished with higher prices.

A plane turns towards Rio de Janeiro with the golden hour landscape of Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain in the background

Not only that, since business travelers were the bulk of their income, airlines knew they could charge corporate travel departments a premium in exchange for convenient flight times built around the work day. This left leisure travelers with little choice about when they traveled, where they went, or how much they paid.

But as travel styles have evolved, so have airlines' regulations. Although they are still a lucrative source of airline revenue, business travelers only made up 12 percent of air traffic in 2019. And not only are leisure travelers jet setting in greater numbers, they have increasingly varied travel needs – including a desire to visit a variety of destinations around the globe at their own pace.

So how do you piece together an itinerary of one-way flights to maximize your travel experiences and minimize costs?

Be Flexible

It goes without saying that you should look at all airlines – not just the flights with a single carrier – to make the most of one-way travel. But there are other advantages to being flexible with flights. If you’re able to adjust your schedule by a day or two in either direction, then you can choose flights based on when airfare is cheapest in general. Using the “Date Grid” view or calendar in an aggregator like Google Flight will allow you to see if you can save money by departing or arriving a few days earlier or later than you originally planned.

Want to save even more money? Consider arriving in one city and leaving from another. You could, for example, fly into New York ’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, then take a taxi or train across the river to Newark’s Liberty International Airport for your flight elsewhere. London ’s Heathrow Airport might be where you land, then your next flight might take off at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris . There are countless combinations around the world that are just a couple of hours apart by land, allowing you to see even more.

If you have frequent flyer miles to spend, you might be able to book your outgoing ticket with one airline and your return trip with another and take the whole trip for free. Don't be afraid to fiddle around with all the tools at your disposal while you do your research.

Know the Players

Major international carriers — the so-called legacy airlines — such as Delta, United, Air France, and British Airways were initially slow to embrace the one-way travel trend. But when discount airlines like JetBlue, Aer Lingus, Norwegian Air, and Southwest began successfully selling tickets in one-way segments regardless of a traveler’s plans, it started a shift in the industry.

It will always depend on the time of year and the proximity to vacation travel trends like popular religious and bank holidays, but these are currently the best points of entry for one-way flights to and from most regions of the world:

North America to Europe (and vice versa)

You don’t necessarily have to get to the east coast of North America before crossing the Atlantic, as there are often affordable flights from Los Angeles (for example, Norwegian has a $169USD non-stop flight to Paris). But across the board, most one-way flights to Europe will be considerably more expensive unless you are leaving from New York or Miami .

Typically, London, Paris, and Rome will be the cheapest destinations if you’re departing from New York. Other European hub cities to consider are Lisbon , Madrid , Dublin , and Oslo . Cities that are becoming more affordable include Porto , Copenhagen , Milan , and Tirana, Albania .

Once you are inside Europe, flights from these hubs to most major cities throughout the continent are consistently well under $100USD, often going for as little as $20USD during off-peak seasons – even cheaper in some cases than train fare.

Europe to Africa (and vice versa)

To fly into Africa at a discount, you need to break the continent up into regions, with certain cities in each being your best bet for affordable one-way tickets. (Note that these are not the regions designated by the United Nations but are based on ease of travel.)

Northern Africa includes Morocco , Algeria , Tunisia , Libya , and Egypt . Yes, Mauritania , Mali , Nigeria , Chad , and Sudan are technically in the north of the continent, but most of their population and travel centers are found south of the Sahara. Of the five northern African countries, all but Libya are easily and economically reached from Europe. Hubs are Casablanca and Cairo with occasional deals found in Fez , Algiers , and Tunis.

The smaller African nations centered around the Gulf of Guinea include everything between Senegal and Gabon . Hubs in this region are Dakar, Senegal ; Conakry, Guinea ; Accra, Ghana ; and Lagos, Nigeria , with the cheapest flights from Europe usually arriving in Dakar or Accra. The short flights between these African nations can be shockingly pricey. For instance, the one-way flight between Accra and the capital of its neighbor, Togo , is an undeviating $361USD for the 50-minute trip. Because of this, travel between countries in Western Africa is more affordably accomplished overland.

Eastern Africa is taken to include all of the countries east of the Great Rift Valley, from Ethiopia down through Tanzania . Addis Ababa in Ethiopia is the most affordable hub in this region, with Nairobi, Kenya , coming in at a distant second. Basically, if you’re flying from any part of eastern Africa to any other part of the region, you will likely have a layover in Addis. And flights from Addis to all parts of Ethiopia are usually fixed at just over $100USD, so it’s a great locale from which to fully explore the country.

Put simply, Central Africa is expensive if you’re flying, as airports are few and air travel is not a priority in this region. Even domestic flights will be in excess of $500USD, and you will likely stop in Addis Ababa, Nairobi, or Entebbe, Uganda . Do your research and be prepared to purchase tickets quickly if you find a rare deal.

Southern Africa includes all countries south of Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo . The obvious flight hub in this region is Johannesburg, South Africa , with prices to and from most cities in Africa tracking nearly $100USD cheaper than any other airport. A second choice would be Lusaka, Zambia , especially if you are looking to visit the area around Victoria Falls .

Flights to and from Asia are plentiful and deals abound. Begin your research with tickets into and out of Kuala Lumpur , Singapore , Jakarta , Mumbai , Hanoi , Istanbul , Tokyo , and the Chinese “city of the month.” This isn’t an official designation but rather a frequent traveler observation; since the Chinese government owns the country’s airlines, they seem to use it to promote travel throughout the country by moving the deals around on a regular basis. It’s hard to predict since it isn’t free market, but you’ll always find a hub city you can use as a springboard for other in-continent flights or affordable train fare if you’re staying in China .

Island-hopping in the South Pacific is always going to be an expensive endeavor, but if you’re searching for deals traveling to Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands of Oceania , check out flights from Southeast Asia, since they’re typically the most cost-effective stopover. Once you are in the region, the least-expensive flights will originate from Sydney or Auckland , with Nadi, Fiji , getting an honorable mention for routes to some of the more remote island nations.

South America

South America is largely serviced by national and regional airlines with in-country fares that rival European budget carriers. Domestic flights within most South American countries hover around the $50USD mark but will often increase by a factor of ten when flying from one country to another. Good deals flying into and out of the continent can be found in cities like São Paulo , Buenos Aires , Santiago , Lima , Bogotá , and Medellín .

Panama City, Panama , is a routinely affordable way to enter Central America .

Middle East

Flights on Middle Eastern airlines like Qatar Airways, Emirates, and Etihad Airways will almost invariably include a layover in Doha , Dubai , or Abu Dhabi , respectively. The result is that these cities are now a major hub for travel throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia, although it often means you’re flying well out of your way to get from point A to point B, albeit affordably.

Regardless of whether or not they are your final destination, check to see if any of these cities fall along your route. Even if they weren’t originally part of your plans, taking advantage of major hubs could give you a bonus travel experience and drastically reduce your transportation costs along the way.

Have you noticed those colorful route maps in the back of in-flight magazines? They’re a good place to find each airline’s hub cities where they’ll offer the greatest number of inbound and outbound flights, and that frequency often leads to lower prices. You can find these maps on the airlines’ websites, too.

The Fine Print

If you’re flying internationally on one-way tickets, you’ll need to provide proof of onward travel. The airlines and immigration officials generally don’t care where you’re going; they just want to know that you have plans to leave their country on a given date that is within the acceptable amount of time for visitors. It’s their attempt to prevent illegal immigration.

Your onward travel doesn’t have to be a flight, though; a train or bus ticket or a rental car reservation should also suffice as long as it’s with a legitimate company. Be sure to have a copy of your ticket receipt or a screenshot of your itinerary ready to show to an agent when it’s requested, since wifi isn’t always available in airport customs and immigration areas.

Be aware that your low-price airfare will likely come with low-price service. Take a look at airline websites to see if you need to bring your own snacks and amenities like earbuds and blankets, be prepared with your own entertainment options downloaded in advance, and generally assume that baggage fees will be extra and carry-on luggage is your best bet.

And while it’s almost never addressed by officials, purchasing a round-trip ticket and only using a portion of the itinerary is against airline ticketing policies. “Throwaway ticketing” may be tempting, particularly if they’re running a round-trip airfare sale, but it could result in you having to pay the price difference between the round-trip fare and a more expensive one-way ticket. You could also potentially be barred from flying the airline if you’re caught.

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Wednesday. For international flights, Tuesday had the cheapest tickets on average.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was July. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and July the most expensive.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

Search cheap flights with KAYAK. Search for the cheapest airline tickets for all the top airlines around the world, airports around the world and the top international flight routes . KAYAK searches hundreds of travel sites to help you find cheap airfare and book a flight that suits you best. Since KAYAK searches many plane tickets sites at once, you can find cheap tickets from cheap airlines and for trains and buses quickly.

KAYAK also helps you find the right hotels for your needs.

Directions in French: Important Words and Expressions (with Audio)

Asking for directions is one of the most important elements of basic French conversation , especially when you’re new to a French-speaking city.

We can help you become the human version of French Google Maps (which, by the way, is a great resource for learning vocab and seeing how directions are written in French!).

Once you master the structures, nail down vocabulary and explore enough on your own, you may even end up giving directions yourself!

The Major French Direction Words and Phrases and How to Use Them

Tout droit — straight ahead, à droite — to the right.

  • À gauche — To the left
  • Nord, sud, ouest,  est — North, south, west, east
  • Près de / À côté (de) — Close to

En face de — In front of

Au coin de — at the corner of, ways to ask for directions, où est — where is…, est-ce que — is / are / does, inverted subject-verb, appropriate transition words for giving and understanding directions, puis — then, après — after, enfin — finally, and one more thing....

Whether you’re heading somewhere en bus   (by bus), en train (by train), en voiture   (by car) or à pied   (by foot), it’s crucial to know how to use the correct words and phrases.

Otherwise, how will you find anything, or, even more importantly, locate l’aéroport   (t he airport) or la gare   (t he train station) to begin your French journey?

But before you get way ahead of yourself, make sure you lock down these phrases before purchasing un billet   (a ticket).

This is one of the most important direction phrases. Used in a sentence, it’s often repeated a few times, sometimes with the tout  repeated for emphasis:

“Oui, juste tout droit.” (Yes, just straight ahead.)

How it’s used:

“Où sont les toilettes ?” (Where is the bathroom?)

“Il faut aller tout droit.”  (Go straight ahead.)

What gets tricky with this phrase is the pronunciation. It’s imperative to note that droit   in the direction phrase  tout droit is pronounced /dʀwa/, while, due to the “e” at the end (indicating that you should pronounce all the letters in the word rather than cutting off the ending), droite   should be pronounced /dʀwat/, with the “t” sound at the end. (For more information on the International Phonetic Alphabet and how to read it, visit their website ).

As you first begin to use these direction words, pay special attention to this, as it’s the difference between going straight and turning right. Three straights don’t necessarily make a right!

“Excusez-moi, je cherche la boulangerie.” (Excuse me, I’m looking for the bakery.)

“Si vous allez tout droit, puis à droite à la Rue Verte, elle est au coin de la rue.” (If you go straight ahead, then take a right at the Rue Verte, it’s at the corner.)

À gauche —   To the left

There’s no similar confusion on pronunciation here. Pronunciation is exactly like the word “gauche” in English—which means something completely different (lacking ease or grace).

“Où est le pont ?” (Where is the bridge?)

“Prenez à gauche au parc.” (Take a left at the park.)

Nord, sud, ouest,   est   — North, south, west, east

The cardinal directions above are useful in the city, when you’re familiar with the way the streets run and you know that Montmartre and the Sacré-Cœur are north of the Louvre and the Tuileries.

A lot of locals will use the cardinal directions to tell you where to go, because, naturally, they’re familiar with the city and how it’s laid out.

Of course, if you’re spending the day out hiking, these directions will be your only option—so either way, they’re necessary.

Just be careful with the pronunciation for  est— if it means east, the pronunciation changes to “ayst” (instead of the usual “ay”).

How they’re used:

“Est-ce qu’il y a un restaurant à côté ?”   (Is there a restaurant close by?)

“Il y a un restaurant italien au sud de la gare.” (There’s an Italian restaurant south of the train station.)

Pr è s de / À côté (de) —   Close to

Just as important as knowing whether to turn right or left is identifying landmarks in relation to other landmarks.  Près de ,  or “close to,” along with à côté , is a phrase that will help you do just that.

Note that the preposition de   contracts with le   and les   to make du and des  respectively. This applies to the expressions above as well as to the other expressions in this post.

(See the above example for  à côté.)

“L’église est près du métro.” (The church is close to the metro.)

En face de  is another great direction word that will help you find your location while looking for landmarks and important places nearby.

“La maison est en face de l’église.” (The house is in front of the church.)

This one’s a bit more specific, but you might hear it in the city.

“Il y a un supermarché au coin de ma rue.” (There’s a supermarket on my street corner.)

The simplest and quickest way to ask where something is located in French is to start the sentence with Où est…

Looking for the post office?

“Où est la poste ?”

The nearest coffee shop?

“Où est le café ?”

The library?

“Où est la bibliothèque ?”

It’s quick, easy to pronounce and gets straight to the point.

This structure will be useful when you’re using basic question words like qui   (who), quoi   (what), quand / où   (when), où   (where) and comment   (how), and really, when you’re asking most questions.

Est-ce que  functions as the “is/are/does” in a sentence like “Where is the church?” or “How does one get to Paris?”

For example:

“Où est-ce que je peux trouver la gare ?” (Where can I find the train station?)

“Comment est-ce qu’on peut aller au centre ville ?” (How can one get to the center of the city?)

One way to ask a question in French is to reverse the subject and verb and connect them with a hyphen. We do something similar in English.

“Puis-je aller au magasin ?” (Can I go to the store?)

This will come in handy when asking for directions, especially when you’re wanting to avoid using the sometimes long-winded Est-ce que  but still would like to be polite.

“Pouvez-vous me dire comment aller à Notre-Dame ?” (Can you tell me how to get to Notre Dame?)

Puis is a simple transition word that is used when giving consecutive directions.

How it’s used:

“Prenez à droite, puis allez tout droit.” (Go right, then go straight ahead.)

Après  has functionality similar to puis.

“Prenez à droite, et après ça, allez tout droit.” (Go right, and after that, go straight ahead.)

If you’re receiving a set of directions that’s particularly long, you may hear enfin.

“Prenez à droite, puis allez tout droit, et enfin, prenez à gauche au parc.”

(Go right, then go straight ahead, and finally, take a left at the park.)

Now that you’ve mastered French directions, you’re free to hop on your avion   (plane) or bateau   (boat), and start your travel adventure!

But if you’re still not feeling comfortable enough in French to figure out your way around a foreign country, you can review more everyday phrases and questions using French language learning apps or online classes .

So hopefully now, armed with all these phrases and resources, you’re feeling prepared and excited for your French vacation.

As a travel destination, France is notorious for a reason and it will delight the casual beach-goers and culture vultures alike. Even in the most touristic spots, you might bump into a waiter, a taxi driver, or a ticket seller who doesn’t speak anything but French.

This is where our French travel phrases will come in handy!

In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to travel around France, from the basic daily words to specific topics such as transportation, restaurants, hotels, and much more. You’ll also find more French travel tips to help you find your way around your new favorite country with these key French travel phrases!

1. Survival Basics: Simple French Travel Phrases

In this chapter, I gathered a list of basic French travel phrases and words that can prove useful in most encounters in France. These French phrases for travel are just what you need to get started on your journey here. Later on, we’ll examine more specific scenarios and make sure you’re well-equipped for anything that could come your way! You’ll certainly be glad to know this survival French for travelers!

1- Being Polite

As I’ve mentioned in other articles, France invented the word “ étiquette ” and is still a place where courtesy matters…a lot. I’m not saying all French behave like white knights of exquisite politeness, but knowing how to greet and thank your French hosts and friends will take you a long way, while doing so in their language makes you instantly more likable.

These are just the ten most useful phrases. To read more on this topic or to practice some of these French travel phrases with pronunciation, please have a look at the following resources on FrenchPod101 :

2- General Toolkit

Now that you’ve shown your good manners, let’s look at a few more essential French phrases for travellers. Here are some common words and expressions to gracefully make your way through France.

This is a small sample of the most common general phrases. You can find out more on our List of 24 Key Phrases with audio recordings, on FrenchPod101 .

2. Lost in Translation

Even if you’re well-prepared and almost fluent, there will be times when your interlocutor doesn’t make sense to you, and you’ll have to make them repeat. Heck, even as a native speaker, I’m helpless with the thickest cases of southern French accents! So just know that even knowing the best French travel phrases won’t always save you from the awkwardness of asking someone to repeat what they said.

It’s perfectly fine to ask someone to talk slower, repeat themselves, or rephrase what they were saying. Most French people will be happy to see you putting in the effort and will help you understand.

A Person Confused By Something Someone Is Saying

Je ne comprends pas ( “I don’t understand” )

3. Shopping

From the sparkling fancy boutiques of the Champs-Elysées to the dusty antiques of a typical Brocante (“Garage sale”), from the sprawling suburban malls to the modest Bouquinistes ( “Book sellers” ) along the Seine river, France caters for all tastes and budgets.

French shopping is usually a painless experience: Prices are displayed almost everywhere and credit cards are widely accepted, even in small bakeries or convenience stores. We don’t do five hours of siesta in the middle of the day, and unless you’re strolling around the Eiffel Tower in the crowd of souvenir sellers who won’t let you leave without a dozen dust collectors, shop owners aren’t likely to jump on you.

A Fruit Stand On A Street Market

Le marché ( “The market” )

For more shopping words, check out our free Shopping vocabulary list .

While shopping in France, you’ll also need to know how to handle prices or quantities. Make sure to read my previous article about French Numbers: From 0 to Infinity, and Beyond and the complementary vocabulary list .

4. Moving Around

No list of basic French phrases for tourists would be complete without information on talking about your ride. Whether you travel by bus, train, taxi, or plane, you need to be able to ask your way around, inquire about the timetables and details of the trip, navigate until you board the correct ride, and figure out when to get off.

Here are the most popular ways to move around France:

  • Le train ( “Train” ) This is the fastest, most comfortable, and usually most scenic way to travel from one city to another. However, compared to buses, it can be pretty expensive, especially when booked at the last minute . Although locals will often complain of the trains being late or canceled, our national network is actually pretty strong and reliable compared to those of some of our close neighbors.
  • Le bus intercité ( “Intercity bus” ) Bus travel has been developing rapidly in recent years and offers cheap prices to compete with the train and car sharing services. For instance, you can book an overnight trip from Paris to Nice for 28€ while a train on the same date would be around 60€.
  • Moving around the city with Les transports en commun (“The public transport”): Bus , Métro , or Tram ( “Bus,metro, or Tramway” ) The subterranean metro or Trams are only available in big cities, but you can always move around with a local bus. Without the monthly or annual card, individual trips can be purchased for around 2€ in the metro or tram station, or directly on the bus.
  • Le taxi ( “Taxi” ) is the expensive alternative to public transportation that you only want to take when you’re going to the airport in the middle of the night or going back home dead drunk after an intense night out.
  • Questionable business practices aside, Uber is a much cheaper and more convenient substitute to taxis, and it’s well-developed in France.
  • L’avion ( “Plane” ) Keeping in mind the dire environmental cost, traveling by plane is by far the fastest way to cover long distances and the prices of the Billets d’avion ( “Plane tickets” ) have continued to drop steadily over the years. Prices are especially low if you can book around a month in advance.

A Train Passing A House

Le train ( “The train” )

Now, where do you want to go?

Then, using your brand new words, find your way there:

Now, you have to ask the right questions before buying your tickets:

Personally, I don’t see why anyone would go to Dunkerque, but I’ll let you be the judge of that (or rather don’t!).

And finally, you’ll just have to figure out where your ride is leaving from and when you should get off:

To learn more vocabulary about transportation, please check out our lists of vocabulary for Airplanes , Bus or Train Stations , and Crossing Borders .

5. Hotel / Hostel

Preparing For Travel

As the most visited country in the world (nothing wrong with a bit of bragging!), France has no shortage of accommodation of all shapes, sizes, and prices. You’re not likely to run out of options when looking for a place to spend the night. But you may still want a couple of French travel tips and phrases regarding your stay.

Prices vary greatly depending on the season and proximity to the tourist attractions, but considering the quality of the transport network all over the country, it’s usually fine to sleep outside of the city center.

While the Gîtes ruraux (“Rural houses” used as vacation rentals) and Chambres d’hôte ( “Bed & Breakfast” ) are popular choices among locals for their summer vacations, the most common options are still L’hôtel ( “The hotel” ) and its budget version, L’auberge de jeunesse (“The hostel” or “Youth hostel”).

The City Of Nice

Nice, on the Mediterranean coast.

Most visitors in France will book their room through the usual Booking.com or HostelWorld , but there are times when you just want to stroll around and find the perfect place all by yourself. Here’s how to ask for a room in French:

Next step: you probably have some questions about the room.

6. Restaurants

Survival Phrases

You’ve found a nice room with a convenient location in this cute family-run hostel. You’ve dropped your bags and are now ready for more adventures. But wait, what’s that sound? Is that the infamous Beast of Gevaudan or your growling stomach?

If there’s one thing France is acclaimed for, it has to be the food! Good food is at the heart of our friends, family, and even business meetings; alongside wine, it stands as the cornerstone of our philosophy of Art de vivre (“The Art of Living”).

Some people imagine French meals as fancy and snobbish, but this is mostly untrue. From the biggest cities to the tiniest towns, you can always find a good Brasserie ( Literally “Brewery” ) to serve you a generous portion of typical and unpretentious food such as Cassoulet (A mixture of white beans and sausage simmered in goose fat), Steak au poivre (“Pepper steak”), or Tartare de boeuf (“Beef tartare”), served with a glass of Beaujolais .

Many restaurants have the menu displayed outside, which is really convenient if you want to quietly check your options before entering. When they don’t, you can simply ask for it before sitting; if you don’t like what you see, just give it back, thank them politely, and leave.

Otherwise, if you like what they offer, go ahead! Most restaurants will take you to a table, while simple Brasseries , Pubs, or fast food places will let you seat yourself.

1- How to Order Drinks

Before you order the food, the first question you’ll usually hear is:

  • Voulez-vous boire quelque chose ? ( “Do you want something to drink?” )
  • Voulez-vous commander quelque chose à boire ? ( “Would you like to order a drink?” )

It’s worth noting that when you order a meal, water is always free in France (we have a law explicitly stating it). I’m talking simple tap water in a pitcher, and not sophisticated bottled sparkling water, but this is an amazing feature of French restaurants, especially if you’re on a budget! And you can get refills.

To ask for your free water, don’t just ask for water; sneaky waiters could take your order as mineral water and charge you for it. Instead, use this phrase:

The important word here is Carafe (“Jug”), as it differentiates this from a paid order of mineral water. Also, don’t worry: water is properly filtered all over the country and it’s always fine to drink from the tap.

Oh, and you know what else is always free? Delicious French bread!

French Fries

Did you know that French Fries are not French?

2- How to Order Food

Alright, now, let’s get some food on this table!

If you have any specific diet or allergy, it’s probably best to start with this:

And here’s how to order something from the menu:

Your stomach has stopped growling, your belly’s full of French delicacies, and your mind is at peace. It’s time to thank the chef and ask for the bill:

7. Asking for Directions

As Mandy Hale says, “Sometimes when you lose your way, you find yourself.” But sometimes, you just get severely frustrated and waste your day trying to reach this freaking museum your GPS keeps making you circle around.

One way or another, you’ll always end up relying on the help of locals to reach well-concealed destinations. Let’s start with the most common questions:

Signs In France

Je suis perdu. ( “I am lost.” )

As I often noticed while traveling, asking for directions is always the easy part, but making anything of the other person’s answer can prove much more challenging. Here are some examples of the answers you could receive:

To understand these kinds of instructions, it all comes down to knowing the right keywords, such as Droite (“Right”), Gauche (“Left”), En face (“In front”), Tout droit (“Straight”), and a few others.

Check out our lists of vocabulary for Position Words and Direction Words on FrenchPod101 to learn more about this.

And here’s more vocabulary and recordings about Key Places in Town , as well as the French Tourist Attractions .

8. Emergencies

In case of an emergency, you don’t want the language to get in the way of you and the help you need. Let’s have a look at the main emergency words (which may just be the most important French travel phrases when you need them) and how to use them.

Emergency

C’est une urgence ! ( “It’s an emergency!” )
