Star Trek Online Review

  • First Released Feb 2, 2010 released

The space combat is short-lived fun, but everything else about this online role-playing game is bland and shallow.

By Kevin VanOrd on February 17, 2010 at 7:09PM PST

Star Trek Online doesn't boldly go where no one's gone before. Instead, it mildly coasts along without much drama or excitement. Developer Cryptic Studios' latest online role-playing game is a "bare minimum" kind of experience, doing just enough to get by, but doing so without an ounce of flair and without the anything-can-happen-in-space buzz that makes the television shows and films such a delight. The game falls into a predictable rut quickly, relying almost solely on spaceship battles for entertainment and falling short almost everywhere else. Luckily, that combat can be fun, and in the best and biggest battles, your screen will light up with phasers and torpedoes, momentarily capturing the thrill of interstellar adventure. Unfortunately, those moments of epic wonder are mostly extinguished by underwhelming cookie-cutter missions, clumsy and unfulfilling ground combat, and shallow exploration that fails to capture the wonder and beauty of deep space. Star Trek Online is light, easy, and shallow, and those may not be qualities you're seeking from your next virtual universe.

Now Playing: Star Trek Online Video Review

The game may be disappointing, but character creation is a delight. As in Cryptic's previous games (Champions Online, City of Heroes), the toolset is highly flexible. It not only offers a healthy number of races from the Star Trek universe, but it also lets you create your own alien being from scratch. While you run about the game's space stations, you might see relatively normal-looking humans of the Captain Kirk variety, Vulcans sporting the pointiest ears you could hope for, or even odd monstrosities born of the player's creativity. When you first begin, you're stuck with the United Federation of Planets, though after you earn a few levels, you unlock the chance to join the Klingon Empire. If you were hoping to live and die with honor with the Klingons, however, you'll discover that the associated content is bare and unfinished. Missions drop off quickly, and you're stuck with player-versus-player content to fill in the enormous gaps.

And so you'll want to voyage with the Federation. As such, you and most of the players you see will follow more or less the same path to the end game. Not that you'll all coast about in the same ships. After you're done with the initial one-size-fits-all cruiser, you'll narrow your path by choosing a vessel with a more specific function. Cruisers are good for the usual tank role because they can take a heavy beating though they don't do the most damage; escorts are maneuverable and boast a lot of firepower but aren't all that sturdy; and science ships are good for healing, buffing, and other helpful support roles. You don't get nearly as much room to customize your ship's looks as you do with your on-foot avatar (and even less room if you're checking out the Klingon side of things), but the vessels look and feel like authentic Star Trek spacecraft, and you'll enjoy looking at your ship as you fly about on missions or even across the grids that represent deep space. You can even choose a look for your bridge and walk around on it. But it's too bad there's nothing to do there but hang about and wish you could relive all the great stories that Star Trek has served up over the years.

Big player-versus-player battles like this one are the main highlights.

Unfortunately, you need to rely on your imagination to provide tension and interpersonal conflict. A number of different characters send you off on missions, but none of them are memorable, and the writing is as dry as the Yadozi Desert, as well as too often littered with distracting spelling errors. There are some interesting narrative tidbits and fun references to the lore scattered about, but nothing that will sweep you up, in spite of Leonard Nimoy's plaintive and all-too-infrequent voice-overs. (The other bits of voice acting are excruciatingly bad.) Most missions are online RPG standbys: Destroy some Gorn ships, beam someone aboard, and assist a friendly ship in combat. Some are even duller than that: Beam to a planet's surface, press some buttons, and beam back up. Perhaps the quiet moments would be a nice respite if the mission writing conveyed the tension of any given Star Trek away mission. As it is, like much of Star Trek Online, they're just dull.

In a typical play session, you'll navigate space by way of an overworld map on your way from one mission to the next. In Star Trek Online, space is a collection of sectors that are separated by loading screens, and they contain planetary systems that are also separated by loading screens. In addition, players do not all share the same virtual space (as we've seen in other space massively multiplayer online games like Earth & Beyond, EVE Online, and Jumpgate) but are separated by instances, which is a structure that should be familiar to you if you've played a Cryptic game in the past. It's a chopped-up vision of the galaxy that diminishes the mystery of space and the joy of exploration. You will be sent to explore unmapped systems, but all this entails is flying about and scanning anomalies until you reveal one to be a system; entering it initiates yet another poorly written, cookie-cutter caper. Easy to navigate is one thing, but Star Trek Online is divided into simple and digestible chunks. If you are a Trekkie new to online role playing, this spoon-fed design will help ease you into the game, but experienced explorers will miss the rush of discovery.

Sloppy mission writing and random misspellings are all too common.

It's a good thing the space combat is fun in spurts, considering you spend so much of your time steering your ship around. Your shields are represented in the heads-up display by four arcs surrounding your ship; they take individual damage, which is a system not unlike that in other Star Trek games, such as 2002's excellent Bridge Commander. You'll want to protect your hull by keeping your shields up, all while whittling down your enemies' shields and then pounding them with torpedoes and other weapons. Attacks are supplemented by the various skills that you and the crew members earn as you level up, which may replenish shields, enhance damage, or allow for a quick getaway. Moments of true excitement are brief but can deliver an occasional rush. In large-scale fleet actions and player-versus-player shoot-a-thons, your screen will explode with color (and your speakers will explode with the pew-pews of disruptors). This is Star Trek Online at its best. The fun is plain and short lived, but it's rewarding to work with other players to bring down a resilient battle cruiser or a squadron of pesky PVPers.

Most of the action is of a much smaller scale, however. If you stick to missions meant for your level, Star Trek Online is a cakewalk. You can get through most battles by flying circles around enemies while hammering your space bar to fire weapons, and activating abilities from time to time. There are occasions where you'll need to take a bit more care, but even then, you'll need not fear defeat. There is no death penalty whatsoever--you just respawn and reenter the fray, no worse for the wear. The lack of a death penalty may sound appealing if you have dreaded memories of returning to your corpse in EverQuest, but here, it just makes an easy game even easier. Few fights offer the down-to-the-last-second kind of tension you'd hope for, and success is so inevitable that victory often rings hollow. You're just going through the motions without having to exercise the strategies you'd employ in the larger fleet actions.

Ground missions offer the chance to break up any potential tedium, but away team combat is a cobbled together mess. The thing is, some of the ideas applied to planetary combat are actually quite good. You can flank enemies to do extra damage, and the weapons and kits that you equip determine some of the skills you use. Even better, you're accompanied by multiple officers from the crew you've accumulated, and you can equip them with various pieces of armor, shields, and weapons. But these might be the dumbest AI-controlled cohorts you've seen in years. They tumble and jump around for no reason, stand in the middle of fires only to die, or get stuck running in place because they can't figure out how to get around a crate. Your enemies are cut from the same intellectual cloth, so don't expect a challenge--just a chaotic jumble of AI-controlled nitwits shooting at each other while you stand in place tapping number keys. Every so often, you need to use a healing item (you can pet a Tribble for a bit of psychosomatic soothing), but most of the time, fighting on the ground is just as easy as fighting in space. This makes the ability to pause combat for a brief time to organize the chaos a real head scratcher--an intriguing idea that's ultimately pointless considering the total lack of challenge and depth on the ground.

They look colorful, but planetside battles are so clumsy they can be almost comical.

You can, of course, bring a few friends along if the AI's ineptitude gets too frustrating. Should you replace any away team members with a real player, you can expect an even easier time of things, though in space, it can be fun to team up and head to battle en masse. But Star Trek Online isn't an I've-got-your-back kind of game. Here, Cryptic takes another cue from its previous RPGs by making the game easy to play on your own and encouraging ragtag groups to come together only when necessary. You can also join a fleet, which is the game's version of a guild. You need to troll the chat channels for a fleet because there is no built-in fleet search, but there's no shortage of recruiting fleets or recruits at the moment. The tense and not-always-respectful chatter of the main sector chat channels will have you seeking refuge in your own fleet's channel as soon as you join one. Or you may, at least, wish that the game had a specific help channel for players sorting out some of the more convoluted aspects of travel and leveling.

You aren't always fighting or flying from mission to mission. You need to visit a starbase from time to time, whether it be to unload excess inventory or to shop for a new weapon or deflector dish or whatnot. Star Trek Online's economy and inventory management aren't complex, but there are a number of different currencies used in various ways, which is an artificial way of making the game seem more complex than it really is and unnecessarily convoluted. Eventually, you discover that you can buy most decent items for credits at the exchange, which is the game's version of an auction house. However, there are really no auctions, so there is no bidding--just outright sales. Furthermore, the exchange is a pain to use. The meager sorting options don't work properly, so you have to type in very specific search parameters if you want to narrow results down to a workable list. You also spend time on bases customizing your ship, requisitioning new officers, or paging through various skills you can purchase for your officers, which is another process that seems overly convoluted for no apparent reason.

Star Trek Online doesn't always capture the spirit of the franchise, though there are some aspects that do succeed at tapping into a fan's pleasure centers. There's the music of course--the rousing French horn themes that signify the great expanse of deep space. And then there are the clicks and whirrs of scanners and the satisfying, not-quite Majel Barrett drone of your onboard computer. The visuals do their best to keep up, and ships and character designs are detailed enough to make most Trek fans happy. Space is lovely in the way space often is in such games, with the foreground dotted with asteroid fields and glowing nebulas wafting in the distance. When you are out of your ship, the game doesn't look so grand, what with texture pop-in, erratic and sometimes awful animations, and occasional bugs, like disappearing walls.

Another cookie-cutter mission is about to begin. Whoopie!

Those aren't the only glitches you're likely to come across while playing Star Trek Online. Bugs are hardly uncommon in online RPGs during their launch period, though most partially compensate for them with great depth and breadth--attributes this game isn't fortunate enough to possess. One broken large-scale group mission was recently fixed but only partially so; you might still spawn in as an enemy and be targeted (and of course killed) by friendly players. You might try to spend skill points only to receive an error a good portion of the time. We experienced frequent crashes during ground missions on one of our test machines, which is a problem that seems to be affecting ATI video card owners. Tutorial tips continue to pop up, and we've run into quests that couldn't be completed. Clearly, there are some problems here, but most of the issues aren't insurmountable. They're just distracting or annoying.

It isn't bugs that make Star Trek Online feel unfinished, however. It's the inherent shallowness. It's light, airy, and simple--attributes that might attract you at first but only let you down when you find that the game is more boring than bold. Some of the flaws will improve in time; MMOGs are, by their very nature, evolving creatures. Other flaws--the poor ground combat and oddly disconnected nature of the universe--are threaded into the core design and less likely to see improvement. For now, be wary of Star Trek Online. The prospect of epic space combat may seem tempting, but a smattering of entertaining battles are merely oases amongst the monotony. Star Trek Online is a shell, lacking the substance and the style that the franchise so rightfully deserves.

  • Leave Blank
  • The biggest battles are enjoyable to play
  • Flexible character creator makes it fun to create a character and tweak officers
  • Soundtrack and sound effects deliver that Star Trek vibe
  • Ground combat is a clumsy disaster
  • Most battles aren't tense or exciting because they're far too easy
  • Shallow, disjointed exploration
  • Missions are repetitive and poorly written

Star Trek Online: Starship Acquisition Guide 2022

Guide to all methods of acquiring new starships (both free and with cost).

Starship Acquisition Guide

————————————-

This is a guide to all the different ways to obtain (and/or upgrade) a ship in Star Trek Online.

Throughout this guide, ‘Captain’ is used to refer to your player character.

After claiming the ships listed below, they will either be found in your Captain’s active ships roster, or as an item in your Captain’s inventory (which, when used, will produce a ship in your Captain’s active ships roster). Your Captain will then need to visit a Starship Selection Officer (located near most Shipyards; there is also one located, independently of a Shipyard, at the Fleet Colony) in order to select it as their current ship, if that is desired.

If your Captain’s active ships roster is full, they can gain additional slots by levelling up, or by purchasing slots from the Zen store. You can also free up existing slots by visiting a Starship Selection Officer and either moving inactive ships to the Drydock, or dismissing/discharging inactive ships. Note that some ships (see below) cannot be reclaimed for free after being dismissed/discharged, so be careful!

When you unlock the Admiralty system at Level 52, your Captain’s will be rewarded a durable ‘Admiralty card’ for every ship currently in their active ships roster, and will gain one anytime that they claim a new ship after that (or return it to active ships roster from Drydock). These Admiralty cards can be quite valuable in generating experience, dilithium, and other resources. Due to this, it is advised that you DO NOT dismiss/discharge any ships before reaching Level 52.

The ship that your Captain is currently flying may not be moved to Drydock or dismissed/discharged.

Special note for Starfleet ships: class names (Galaxy-class, Intrepid-class, etc) are not included in the Shipyard main interface or in the active ship roster, but are shown elsewhere. They are included here for player reference and clarity.

Cross-Faction Flying (NEW feature – 11th Anniversary / 2021)

– EXCEPTION: The four Jem’Hadar Vanguard ships included in the Gamma pack (Vanguard Heavy Raider, Vanguard Warship, Vanguard Carrier, and Vanguard Dreadnought Cruiser), must be unlocked via their own Tier 6 Mastery mechanic.

If you do NOT have “Cross-Faction Flying” unlocked, you can still access many ships outside of your own faction, as all Romulan ships, newer Dominion ships (excluding the four previously mentioned), and most non-Zen ships are factionless.

The FREE sections of this guide are unaffected by “Cross-Faction Flying” (except the Recruitment Event Reward Ship section.)

This upgrade often requires a separately purchaseable “Starship Upgrade Requisition”, but once applied, these are considered an ‘Account Unlock’ for that ship type. In some cases, the upgrade is already free with purchase of the ship.

These tokens must be applied while visiting a Starship Selection Officer, usually found near each Shipyard. (There is also one located, independently of a Shipyard, at the Fleet Colony.)

This upgrade adds some, but not all, of the additional benefits given to Tier 6 ships: level-scaling ship hull points, an additional Console slot, and four levels of Starship Mastery benefits.

Tier 5-U and Tier 6 ships can be upgraded to “Experimental” (T5-UX and T6-X).

This upgrade often requires a separately purchaseable “Experimental Starship Upgrade Token”, but once applied, these are considered an ‘Account Unlock’ for that ship type.

This upgrade adds a Universal Console slot, an additional Device slot, and an additional Starship Trait slot.

FREE: Starter Ships

The type of ship your Captain will receive is determined by your Captain’s faction, as follows:

2409 Starfleet – Miranda-class Light Cruiser 23c Starfleet – Pioneer-class Utility Cruiser Discovery Starfleet – Malachowski-class Light Cruiser Romulan – T’liss Light Warbird Klingon – B’rel Bird-of-Prey Dominion – Jem’Hadar Escort (T-5U)

Your Captain will also be provided with a faction-appropriate shuttlecraft, for use in the small number of missions that require their use. (23c Starfleet Captains can also claim a Class F shuttle for free; this must be done manually and is ONLY available while still in the 23c storyline.)

FREE: Level-Up Reward Ships (Levels 10-40)

It should be noted that, previously, the Romulan and Klingon selections were also tied to completion of certain storyline episodes. I’m not sure if this is still the case, but if you do not receive the “Promotion” mission popups at the proper time, this may be the reason.

Level 10 – Choice of certain Tier 2 ships. Level 20 – Choice of certain Tier 3 ships. Level 30 – Choice of certain Tier 4 ships. Level 40 – Choice of certain Tier 5 ships.

The available ships are also determined by your Captain’s faction. Captains do NOT have the option of claiming allied/other faction ships. 23c and Discovery Starfleet Captains, share the standard Starfleet selections. The available choices are as follows:

Tier 2: Starfleet – Constitution-class (refit) Cruiser, Saber-class Escort, Nova-class Science Vessel Romulan – Dhelan Warbird Klingon – QulDun Bird-of-Prey, K’tanco Battlecruiser, Somraw Raptor

(Note that the Starfleet Cruiser is the ‘refit’ version of the original ‘Enterprise’ as seen in the first three theatrical films, and as the ‘Enterprise-A’ in films 4-6.)

Tier 3: Starfleet – Cheyenne-class Heavy Cruiser, Akira-class Heavy Escort, Olympic-class Research Science Vessel Romulan – Mogai Heavy Warbird Klingon – Norgh Bird-of-Prey, K’t’inga Battlecruiser, Qorgh Raptor

Tier 4: Starfleet – Galaxy-class Exploration Cruiser, Defiant-class Tactical Escort, Intrepid-class Long Range Science Vessel Romulan – Ar’kif Tactical Warbird, D’deridex Warbird Battlecruiser Klingon – Ki’tang Bird-of-Prey, Vor’cha Battlecruiser, Pach Raptor

(Note that most Tier 4 choices are screen-canon ships from the ‘The Next Generation’ / early ‘Deep Space Nine’ era. The Starfleet Exploration Cruiser is the ‘Enterprise-D’ and the Starfleet LRSV is ‘Voyager’.)

Tier 5: Starfleet – Sovereign-class Assault Cruiser, Sentinel-class Star Cruiser, Prometheus-class Advanced Escort, Dervish-class Patrol Escort, Destiny-class Deep Space Science Vessel, Luna-class Reconnaissance Science Vessel Romulan – Ha’feh Assault Warbird, Ha’apax Advanced Warbird, Ha’nom Guardian Warbird Klingon – Hegh’ta Heavy Bird-of-Prey, Negh’Var Heavy Battlecruiser, Vor’cha Battlecruiser Retrofit, Qin Heavy Raptor, Vo’Quv Carrier

(Note that some Tier 5 choices are screen-canon ships from the late ‘Deep Space Nine’ / ‘Voyager’ era; the Starfleet Assault Cruiser is the ‘Enterprise-E’ as first seen in the film ‘First Contact’.)

FREE: Episode Reward Ship (“Temporal Ambassador”)

Starfleet – Ambassador-class Support Cruiser (‘Enterprise-C’) Klingon – Kamarag Battlecruiser

FREE: Level-Up Reward Ship (Level 61)

These specific Tier 5 ships are offered at Level 61:

Starfleet – Galaxy-class Exploration Cruiser Retrofit, Defiant-class Tactical Escort Retrofit, Intrepid-class Long Range Science Vessel Retrofit Romulan – T’varo Light Warbird Retrofit, Dhelan Warbird Retrofit, Mogai Heavy Warbird Retrofit, D’deridex Warbird Battlecruiser Retrofit Klingon – B’Rel Bird-of-Prey Retrofit, Kar’Fi Battle Carrier, Orion Marauder Flight Deck Carrier

Romulan and Dominion Captains may also choose from the ships offered to their allied faction.

These ships are otherwise Zen-purchaseable ships (see below). It should be noted that, when purchased by this method, these ships are a single purchase only, not an account unlock, and are not reclaimable.

FREE: Level-Up Reward Ship (Special Note for Lifetime Subscribers)

Free: seasonal event ships.

These events have generally run 28 to 49 days, and required 20 to 30 progress (available once every 20 hours) to unlock the ship reward.

These ships are now generally Tier 6 ships, but prior to October 2014 (Delta Rising expansion) Event Ships were Tier 5 ships.

In most years, three ‘Seasonal Events’ rewarding ships are offered: Anniversary Event (February) Summer Event (usually July-August, but sometimes a bit earlier or later) Winter Event (December-January)

A one-time special Mycelial Event (which also rewarded a ship) was offered in Fall 2019, and a similar Mirror Universe event in September 2021.

Players who previously earned an Event Ship can reclaim them at any time, through the Event Reputation Store. (Captains must be Level 50 or higher in order to reclaim the older Tier 5 Event Ships. Tier 6 Event Ships may be claimed at any level, but some equipment slots and some Bridge Officer ability slots will be temporarily locked out until the Captain reaches level 40.)

FREE: Recruitment Event Reward Ship

If you have unlocked this reward with your Klingon Recruit character, the ship may be claimed from the Temporal Agent NPC at your faction’s home base.

“Cross-Faction Flying” may be required for Federation (or allied) characters in order to fly this ship.

Lifetime Subscription (“Veteran”) Ships

These ships are also available, after a significant delay, to players with an active Monthly Subscription. However, new Monthly Subscriptions are no longer available.

Starfleet Captains will receive access to the Captain’s Yacht, Tier 5 Chimera-class Heavy Destroyer, and Tier 6 Manticore-class Heavy Destroyer.

Romulan Captains will receive access to the Commander’s Gig, Tier 5 Daeinos Warbird Destroyer, and Tier 6 Dinaes Warbird Destroyer.

Klingon Captains will receive access to the DujHod General’s Chariot, Tier 5 Peghqu’ Heavy Destroyer, and Tier 6 Duvqu’ Heavy Destroyer.

Dominion Captains will receive access to only one unique ship, the Tier 6 Jem’Hadar Vanguard Heavy Destroyer.

Captains of any faction, with the “Cross-Faction Flying” unlock, can access all of the listed ships.

Purchaseable Ships (Dilithium)

Tier 2 ships require a minimum level of 10. Tier 3 ships require a minimum level of 20. Tier 4 ships (with one exception) require a minimum level of 30.

There are additional ships available at a higher dilithium price at Tiers 1-4.

– These ships were previously Zen-purchaseable ships (see below); if purchased during that period, they remain available as account-unlocks, as with other Zen purchase ships.

– The Tier 1 “Constitution Cruiser” (sometimes labeled as “TOS Enterprise”) is popular with newer players, both for nostalgia reasons (this is the Enterprise from the 1960s TV series), and because it comes with two special infinity-mark ‘Retrofit Phaser Banks’ (blue quality). Infinity-mark weapons will auto-adjust their stats to the equivalent of an appropriate mark for your Captain’s level, until they reach level 50, at which point the weapon’s stats will freeze at the equivalent of Mark 11. If you load them into the Upgrade Item screen once the Captain is at level 50+, they will be autoconverted to Mark 12 and are then further upgradable. These Retrofit Phaser Banks can be equipped on any ship. (They also have 1960s style artwork and sound effects. Retrofit Phaser Banks can also be acquired as episode rewards for “Everything Old Is New”, but if sourced from the episode, are not infinity-mark.)

* NOTE – the Tier 1 Constitution Cruiser can still be purchased for Zen as part of a bundle.

– Romulan and Dominion Captains can also access most (not all) dilithium ships of their allied faction.

– Romulan dilithium ships are available to everyone, regardless of faction.

– Captains below level 30 may claim the Starfleet Walker-class Prototype Light Exploration Cruiser (Tier 4), but some equipment slots and some Bridge Officer ability slots will be temporarily locked out until the captain reaches level 30.

Purchaseable Ships (Zen)

Some notes, however:

– Zen purchase ships are considered ‘Account Unlocks’, meaning that once purchased, they can be reclaimed for free, even on other Captains, as long as the claiming Captain is of a proper level and faction. (To reclaim, visit any Shipyard.) As such, you need not ‘save’ them in your Captain’s Drydock for later reclamation.

– Tier 5 ships require a minimum level of either 40 or 50 (depending on the particular ship).

– Captains below level 40 may claim Tier 6 ships, but some equipment slots and some Bridge Officer ability slots will be temporarily locked out until the captain reaches level 40.

– Tier 5 ships are priced at either 2000 Zen or 2500 Zen; Tier 6 ships are priced at 3000 Zen.

– Tier 6 ships offer a fifth level of Starship Mastery, which allows the Captain to earn a Starship Trait. Once earned, these traits may be used while flying any ship.

– Romulan and Dominion Captains can also access most (not all) Zen ships of their allied faction.

– Romulan Zen store ships are available to captains of all factions.

– The Temporal Raider, Temporal Multi-Mission Science Vessel, Temporal Dreadnought Cruiser, the Jem’Hadar Vanguard Temporal Warship, the Cardassian Intel Escort, Cardassian Intel Flight Deck Carrier, Cardassian Intel Science Dreadnought, and all of the Tier 5 ships included in the ‘Gamma Vanguard’ pack (Cardassian Galor Cruiser, Jem’Hadar Dreadnought Carrier, Jem’Hadar Heavy Escort Carrier), are available to Captains of all factions.

– Starfleet, Romulan, and Klingon Captains can also access the Dominion’s Vanguard Heavy Raider, Vanguard Warship, Vanguard Carrier, and Vanguard Dreadnought Cruiser ONLY AFTER the player has unlocked these by achieving their (unique) sixth level Starship Mastery on them with a Dominion Captain.

– There are quite frequently sales on Zen ships. 20% off sales tend to happen once every two to three months, and a steeper discount is often available on “Black Friday” and sometimes on other US holiday weekends. If you also buy your Zen when it’s on sale, you can buy ships for something close to half of the standard cash-to-Zen equivalency. During ship sales, a free Starship Upgrade Token is often included with the purchase of any Tier 5 ship that requires one.

– Many Zen ships are also offered in bundles, which can offer a very large discount, and in some cases include non-ship items as well. In some cases, the bundle prices can be as little as half of the value of the ships if purchased individually.

– The Tier 5 Galor-class Cruiser (not sold separately; included with the 3-pack Cardassian Tier 6 ship bundle or the Gamma Vanguard expansion bundle) comes with four free infinity-mark ‘Spiral Wave Disruptor Beam Arrays’ (purple quality), ONLY the first time that it is claimed by each Captain.

– Several other ships also come with special infinity-mark weapons. Infinity-mark weapons will auto-adjust their stats to the equivalent of an appropriate mark for your Captain’s level, until they reach level 50, at which point the weapon’s stats will freeze at the equivalent of Mark 11. In such cases as these weapons are NOT white (common) quality, If you load them into the Upgrade Item screen once the Captain is at level 50+, they will be autoconverted to Mark 12 and are then further upgradable. Some (not all) of these can be equipped on other ships in addition to the one they come with. (Note: there are also some instances of infinity-mark ground combat items, which are NOT white (common) quality; these also autoconvert, but some autoconvert to other mark levels.)

– In some cases, when claiming these ships, they will be delivered to your Captain’s inventory in a Bound to Character box, and can be moved to your Captain’s active ships roster by using the box. In other cases, they will be automatically unpacked into your Captain’s active ships roster. Boxed ships may be stored in your Captain’s personal Bank.

– Players wishing to access these ships (and other Zen store items) without using real-world cash, may do so by purchasing secondhand Zen with refined dilithium. See the “Exchange” button in the dilithium section of your Captain’s inventory Assets tab.

– “Legendary” T6 ships also exist. These have, to date, only been sold in bundles, but are otherwise treated as Zen store ships. Each Legendary ship purchase includes all of the pre-existing skins, all of the consoles, and any non-white/common weapons available on the variants of its ship type released prior to the Legendary release. They also award (at Tier 5 Starship Mastery) all Starship Traits awarded by the previous variants, and (at Tier 6 Starship Mastery) a brand-new, account-wide Starship Trait as well.

Purchaseable Ships (Phoenix Tokens)

Tier 6 ships are listed in the “Epic” tab and require an Epic token.

Tier 5 ships are listed in the “Ultra Rare” tab and require an Ultra Rare token.

These Tokens are randomly rewarded from opening Phoenix Prize Packs, and are the two rarest forms of Tokens (out of five) rewarded from these Prize Packs. Phoenix Prize Packs and Tokens are Bound to Account, so may not be transferred or sold to other players, but may be stored in your Captain’s personal Bank or Account Bank.

Phoenix Prize Packs may be bought in the Dilithium Store, for 4500 dilithium per pack, or 40,000 dilithium for a bundle of ten, with no purchase limit. These do not require a key to open.

This method is intended to make these ships available to newer players who missed the ships’ original events.

It should be noted that, when purchased by this method, these ships are a single purchase only, not an account unlock, and are not reclaimable.

Purchaseable Ships (Fleet Credits / Ship Modules)

While there are Shipyard facilities located at some of the Fleet bases (notably the Starbase’s Tactical level and the Spire), access to Fleet ships is also available at public-location Shipyard facilities.

Some notes:

– Your Fleet’s current quantity of Military Fleet Ship Provisions is visible in two places: in your Fleet’s starbase tab, under the provisions view, or in the cost section of the Shipyard interface. These can be generated by certain red starbase development projects. One Military Fleet Ship Provision is consumed by each Fleet ship purchase.

– Fleet ships are considered a separate ship-type from their non-Fleet equivalent. As such, unlocks described in the “Upgrading” section of this guide will not carry over.

– Fleet ships, when compared to their non-Fleet equivalent ship, have 10% higher shield and hull multipliers and an extra console slot. In a very few cases, they may also have a different Bridge Officer layout. Fleet ships also reward a separate durable Admiralty card from their non-Fleet equivalent ship.

– Fleet ships do NOT include any special weapons or consoles which come included on their non-Fleet equivalent ship, but can use them.

– Tier 6 Fleet ships do NOT offer a fifth level of Starship Mastery, so cannot be used to earn Starship Traits.

– Ships which are sold for Zen in a three-variant pack designated by profession, are already of Fleet quality (the additional console slot is used to differentiate them), so therefore, Fleet versions of these ships are not available.

– Fleet Ship Modules are required for most Fleet ships. These are available from the Zen store and from the Exchange. You may also earn a limited number of these (which, unlike the Zen store ones, will be Bound to Character) through the Reputation system.

– The available selection of Fleet ships depends on your Fleet’s development level. Although many Fleet NPC vendors will allow your Captain to bypass their own Fleet’s development level restrictions, by shopping while visiting another fleet’s bases as a guest (in these cases, the host fleet’s development level is used to determine vendor item accessibility), this DOES NOT work for ship purchases.

—————— Fleet variants of Zen ships ——————

Many Fleet ships are improved variants of Tier 5 and Tier 6 Zen-purchasable ships. These ships may be purchased with a combination of Fleet Credits and Fleet Ship Modules.

If you have purchased the equivalent Zen ship (see above), at the same tier, the Shipyard will apply a massive discount to the number of Fleet Ship Modules required (generally reducing it to one module). You do NOT need to currently have the Zen ship in your inventory to receive this discount.

—————— Fleet variants of Event and Veteran ships ——————

Fleet variants of the Veteran Starships and the Risian Corvette (2019 Summer Event) ship are available. The method of purchase is the same as the variants of Zen ships.

However, since it is not possible to purchase these ships without previously unlocking their non-Fleet equivalent, the Fleet Ship Module discount always applies.

It should be noted that, unlike other Fleet variants, the Fleet Risian Corvette has a markedly different Bridge Officer configuration and adds pilot maneuvers, but does NOT gain an additional console slot.

—————— Fleet variants of other ships ——————

Some Fleet ships are variants of ships not available in the Zen store at the same tier. Some of these are still sold for a combination of Fleet Credits and Fleet Ship Modules, while others have a cost solely in Fleet Credits.

Purchaseable Ships (Energy Credits)

Other ships (special access and player-to-player purchasing).

Keep in mind that the Exchange is a player-to-player consignment (resale) shop. Availability and price is therefore affected by supply and demand economics.

It may also be possible to purchase these ships from other players directly (without using the Exchange).

MOST “Special Requisition” ships are “factionless” (meaning that they can be used by any captain) and represent “minor” or “alien” races. In some cases, however, they represent major-faction ships, and sometimes the “Special Requisition” will either be limited to being opened by the appropriate faction, OR will produce an alternate ship if opened by a different faction.

Unbound “Special Requisition” packs may also be stored in your Captain’s personal Bank, Account Bank, or Fleet Bank. Unbound “Special Requisition” packs may also placed in the Mail system as an attachment, or traded to another Captain directly by use of the Trade interface.

Please note that once the “Special Requisition” is opened (and grants the actual ship), the resulting ship is completely non-transferrable and non-resellable.

—————— Lock Box Ships ——————

Many ships are available as the “big prize” item from Lock Boxes. A new ship (or multiple ships) will be introduced with each new Lock Box, and are delivered as a “Special Requisition Pack” bearing the name of the enclosed ship, or a “Special Requisition Choice Pack” from which multiple ships can be selected. New Lock Boxes are introduced about three to four times per year.

Older ships may also be found in the Infinity Lock Box (which combines the items available through Lockboxes which have been retired for a significant time) by winning an “Infinity Prize Pack – T6 Ship” or “Infinity Prize Pack – T5 Ship”. These Prize Packs are non-transferrable, but may be used to select a “Special Requisition” pack, which is transferrable, from a list of eligible ships.

It should be noted that the chance of receiving a “Special Requisition” pack from a Lock Box is individually randomized and is quite low (while precise odds have never been officially released, most large-sample testers have reported results of 0.2% to 0.8%), and that opening Lock Boxes requires Keys (which are a Zen purchaseable item, though they may also be resold/bought on the Exchange).

If you are on a budget, or prefer to avoid the risk inherent in randomness, it is advised that you purchase a “Special Requisition” pack for the desired ship directly from the Exchange, rather than trying to generate it by opening Lock Boxes.

—————— Promotional Pack Ships ——————

During special Research & Development or Duty Officer events, a promotional version of the appropriate Zen store purchaseable packs becomes available. Opening these Promotional packs grants a chance to win a “Special Requisition Choice Pack – Tier 6 Promotional Ship Choice Pack”. These “Special Requisition Choice” packs are non-transferrable, but may be exchanged for the player’s choice of a list of specific “Special Requisition” packs, which ARE transferrable.

It should be noted that the chance of receiving a “Special Requisition” pack from a Promotional Pack is individually randomized and quite low (although precise odds have never been officially released).

If you are on a budget, or prefer to avoid the risk inherent in randomness, it is advised that you purchase a “Special Requisition” pack for the desired ship directly from the Exchange, rather than trying to generate it by opening Promotional packs.

—————— Lobi Crystal Ships ——————

When opening Lock Boxes, Promotional Research & Development Packs, and Promotional Duty Officer Packs, if you do not receive a ship pack, you will instead be rewarded with an amount of Lobi Crystals.

Lock Boxes generate a variable number of Lobi Crystals averaging between 4 and 5 Lobi Crystals per box. Promotional Packs generate 10 Lobi Crystals per pack.

There have also been special (calendar) events that have allowed players to earn or purchase Lobi Crystals for a limited time and/or in limited quantity.

Lobi Crystals are Bound to Account, so can be transferred to the owner’s other characters via Account Bank, but are non-transferrable to other players (including via the Exchange). However, they can be exchanged for a wide variety of specialty items via the Lobi Crystal Store. While most Lobi Crystal Store items are Bound to Character, ships are an exception to the rule, and are delivered in an unbound “Special Requisition” pack.

Generally, one or more new ships will be added to the Lobi Crystal store whenever a new Lock Box is released.

Purchaseable Ships (Mudd’s Market)

When purchased from “Mudd’s Market”, these ships are treated as if they are Zen-purchased ships (therefore being account-unlock and reclaimable), even if their other availability is single-purchase only.

Event Campaign Rewards

The rewards for the past Event Campaigns have included ships listed in the ‘Special Access’ portion of this guide, large sums of Lobi Crystals, and/or Zen ship coupons.

The Event Campaign reward itself is a single-character claim only.

However, the Zen ship coupons can be used to purchase a Zen ship, which is then an account unlock, so if you wish an account-wide option, this is it.

Ka-ching! Taylor Swift lands on Forbes' World's Billionaires list with $1.1B net worth

star trek online worth it 2022

If Taylor Swift still has a "Blank Space," she can write in a dollar sign now.

The pop superstar, who reached billionaire status in October , landed on Forbes' World’s Billionaires list , the business magazine shared Tuesday. Among other celeb billionaires who made the cut – including Rihanna , Kim Kardashian , Oprah Winfrey and "Star Wars" creator George Lucas – Swift was ranked at No. 14 with a net worth of $1.1 billion.

Lucas topped the celebrity billionaires list with a whopping net worth of $5.5 billion.

However, Swift has made history with her economic achievement. The "Is It Over Now?" singer is the first person to reach billionaire status "based solely on songwriting and performing," according to Forbes.

Channel 13 (Taylor's Version): Taylor Swift gets her own SiriusXM station

“I think what’s really interesting is the proliferation of self-made billionaires,” Grace Chung, senior editor at Forbes magazine, told the Nashville Tennessean (part of the USA TODAY network) of Swift's distinction. “To be a self-made woman, not just an heir that inherited her wealth, is really exciting to see and also see it grow.”

Swift had a lucrative 2023, thanks in large part to her record-breaking Eras Tour , which became the first tour in history to earn more than $1 billion. The global trek, which Chung said makes up approximately 45% of Swift's net worth, took in an estimated ticket gross of $1.04 billion in 2023 from 4.35 million tickets sold, according to  music industry trade publication Pollstar .

Swift's U.S. concerts added an estimated $4.3 billion to the country’s gross domestic product in 2023, Bloomberg reported in October .

A concert film of the tour, "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," opened at the box office in October with earnings of $92.8 million. Within days, it became the highest-grossing concert film ever in North America, not accounting for inflation.

'It's completely up to you': Taylor Swift wins artist of the year at iHeartRadio Awards

The singer's expanding music catalog has also added to her wealth. In 2019, Swift released "Lover," the  first album she owned  after the masters to her first six albums were purchased by Scooter Braun via his acquisition of Big Machine Label Group. She has re-released four "Taylor's Version" editions of those albums since then, including "1989," " Fearless ," " Red " and " Speak Now ."

“After her first six albums, she singed that lucrative distribution deal with Universal Music (Group), which gave her monetary control over her work,” Chung said. “That’s something very few artists have.”

Swift's billionaire ranking follows a big night at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards on Monday. The singer, who was not in attendance, took home six awards, including artist of the year.

"I wanted to say thank you so much to anyone who voted for this award," said Swift in a recorded video. "To the fans, it's completely up to you to choose how you spend your time, what concerts you want to go to, what music do you want to make the soundtrack to your life, and to anyone who has included me in those choices, I'm so so so thankful for that."

star trek online worth it 2022

Players will run an entire fleet within the  Star Trek  universe, commanding one of four major powers in the galaxy: the United Federation of Planets, Romulan Star Empire, Cardassian Union, or Klingon Empire.

Star Trek: Infinite  puts players in command of one of four major powers in the galaxy, each with individualized traits, stories, quests, and more to make their play feel distinct.

With stunning visuals, difficult choices, and unique gameplay, this game allows players to experience a beloved franchise in a new way as they navigate contact with other empires and worlds.

With its emergent gameplay and complex choices, Star Trek: Infinite  will take players on a thrilling journey through space, placing them in the heart of the galactic struggles between the powers of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants.

Paradox Interactive and Nimble Giant Entertainment announced  ( thanks BluesNews ) that Star Trek: Infinite support is ending, a mere 6 months after the game launched .

Today, we bring news regarding the future of  Star Trek: Infinite , a journey we've embarked on together with a lot of excitement. Sadly, we must inform you that  Star Trek: Infinite  will not receive further updates. Together, we've explored distant worlds, faced formidable adversaries, and created a community bound by a shared love for the  Star Trek universe . We want to extend our gratitude to those who have been the backbone of this journey. To the incredible team at  Nimble Giant  whose dedication and creativity made  Star Trek: Infinite  a reality. Working alongside such a talented group has been a privilege. Equally, our partners at  Paramount  deserve a world of thanks. Your support and insights have been an invaluable resource, enriching our development process and enabling us to craft the game that stands before our community today. Your commitment to this project has helped us navigate the vastness of the  Star Trek  universe with authenticity and passion. Lastly, we cannot express enough gratitude for you, our community, for your support, enthusiasm, and dedication. Your engagement, feedback, and passion have been the driving force behind this adventure. You've built more than just a player base; you've forged a community of explorers united under the banner of  Star Trek . Though our journey in updating  Star Trek: Infinite  concludes here, the universe we've created together remains. The legacy of  Star Trek: Infinite  will live on through you, the community, and the adventures you continue to share. Thank you for being a part of this incredible voyage, live long and prosper.

Though this game draws inspiration from the iconic  Star Trek: The Next Generation ,  this story isn’t just about one ship.  Star Trek: Infinite  puts players in command of one of four major powers in the galaxy: the United Federation of Planets, Romulan Star Empire, Cardassian Union, or Klingon Empire. Each major power possesses individualized traits, stories, quests, and more to make their play feel distinct. Players can send fleets to explore the Alpha and Beta quadrants, manage an economy, and navigate diplomatic endeavors.

Whether building the influence of their homeworlds or risking exploration into the unknown,  Star Trek: Infinite  gives players endless choices and the opportunity to shape the destiny of their favorite  Star Trek  powers. Fans will experience a game faithful to the lore of a timeless franchise, as they embark on an unforgettable journey through space, encounter new civilizations, and forge a path among the stars.

Star Trek: Infinite  is coming available for PC and macOS.

I’ve been living with a $699 AI Pin on my chest. You probably shouldn’t.

Dedicated ai gadgets are here, but i’m not sure about living with them yet.

star trek online worth it 2022

SAN FRANCISCO — Our phones constantly clamor for our attention, and some people — myself included — are getting tired of it.

We’re more than 15 years into the age of the modern, all-screen smartphone, and companies big and small are busy reimagining what we might want to use next.

Meta has AI sunglasses that can recognize objects around you. The start-up Rabbit has an AI handheld that can learn to interact with apps and services for you. And former Apple design chief Jony Ive is raising money to build some kind of secretive AI companion gadget.

Or you could put on Humane’s AI Pin, a $699 wearable with a touch pad, a camera and a laser projector you stick to your shirt. It’s not meant to replace your phone, but Humane thinks you could live a little more in the moment when you’re asking an AI to answer questions and text people instead of staring at a screen again.

I’ve spent the last two weeks testing the Pin to see if it could possibly live up to the hype. Here’s how it went and what you need to know.

First, here’s how the AI Pin works

If you’ve ever watched Captain Picard tap his combadge to talk to his colleagues on Star Trek, congratulations: You basically already know how to use the AI Pin.

You’re meant to wear the Pin high up on your chest, so you can quickly reach over and press its touch pad — that turns on its microphone so you can ask something.

Should you trust that AI?

(For what it’s worth, Humane President Imran Chaudhri told me the company doesn’t “use any of your data in any of our training or training of other models,” unless you view your Pin’s activity online and choose to leave feedback.)

When you want to read an incoming message or fiddle with the Pin’s settings, you hold your hand up in front of the Pin so the projector can beam its interface onto your palm. To interact with items that appear on your palm, you’re supposed to tilt your hand around to highlight them and pinch your fingers Vision Pro style to “click” on them.

If this all sounds pretty neat, well, it is. And Humane is right about one thing: Interacting with a device like this feels surprisingly natural, to the point where I sometimes find myself reaching for the Pin to ask a question even when I’m not wearing it.

But using the Pin can get frustrating, fast. Take those tilt and pinch gestures: They’re easy to understand, but hard to master. Even after two weeks, I still find myself struggling to select just the right menu options.

Here’s another catch: The projector is basically unreadable when you’re in the sun. Summer’s just around the corner, and it’s sure to offer plenty of warm days I don’t want my phone to get in the way of, but the Pin is much less useful in broad daylight.

Speaking of warmth, the Pin starts to overheat pretty quickly when you’re making back-to-back requests or using the Pin’s projector for too long.

When that happens, don’t be surprised when the Pin cuts off contact for a while as it cools off. This has happened four or five times in two weeks, at least once when it was just charging from one of its magnetic booster batteries. That’s not great, especially since you’ll have to snap on another booster to use the Pin for a full day.

Using the Pin as a phone

Let's be clear here: No one, not even the folks at Humane, think the Pin is going to replace your smartphone. But it does act like one sometimes.

You have to shell out $24 each month to use the Pin, and part of that cost gives it a line of T-Mobile service for making calls, sending messages and accessing the internet away from home.

Phone calls generally sound pretty good through the Pin’s built-in speaker, but if you’re around more than a few people, the sound it produces is easily drowned out. (Connecting a pair of Bluetooth headphones, however, really helps.)

Texting is trickier. Unless you specifically tell the Pin you’re dictating the contents of a message — something that’s easy to forget when you’re just trying to contact someone — the Pin has this weird tendency to truncate some messages and pretend swear words don’t exist.

Here's an example: One day, I asked the Pin to send a message to a friend saying “I'm tired of this [expletive] San Francisco weather and the food.” (Neither of these things are even close to true, for the record.)

Instead, the full message he received said “Of this San Francisco weather and the food.” My friend was a little confused, to say the least.

Also, think about the services you rely on every day through your phone and pick three of them. Odds are, the Pin can’t connect to any of them.

Right now, all it can do is pull contacts from Apple, Google and Microsoft accounts, and play music in Tidal. Humane says it’s working to widen the Pin’s set of tools, but those changes are going to take time — and buy-in from companies that believe in the Pin’s promise.

Oh, and the camera? At best, it’s hit-or miss. In daylight, the results can be pleasant enough, but if you’re anywhere dim, expect to see lots of grain and blurry faces.

The idea of a less intrusive kind of camera is a powerful one, but if you want a visual record of your life you might actually want to revisit, you’re better off sticking to your phone for photos and video.

Talking to the AI

At its best, the Pin is a sort of speed dial button to a question-and-answer hotline with an AI on the other end. And on the whole, it worked pretty well.

When I sat down to watch “The Normal Heart” and discovered that former New York mayor Ed Koch was gay, the Pin correctly offered a bit of insight into his only long-term relationship.

But it still gets some factual things wrong. It claimed, for example, that some ingredients in Twinkies have been banned by the state of California. (That’s not true, but a local lawmaker is crusading against one of the dyes used in those treats.)

Even though the Pin’s answers are more correct than not, I still feel like I have to fact check them. And if that’s the case, why shouldn’t I just pick my up phone in the first place?

You’ll also need to be careful about how you talk to it. Small differences in the way you structure your request mean the difference between success and sheer confusion.

And even when the Pin knows exactly what you’re talking about, it produces results that are far from helpful. Just recently, my fiancée and I were figuring out an order for fancy disposable flatware for a pre-wedding reception cocktail hour.

It sounded a little like a word problem so I asked the Pin: “Plates come in packages of 200. Forks come in packages of 150. How many packages of plates and forks do I need to buy to wind up with an equivalent number of plates and forks?”

A little arithmetic gives us the answer: 3 packs of plates, and 4 packs of forks. Simple. Instead, the Pin explained calmly and at length about how one might solve this equation, without ever actually solving it.

Humane has a clear plan for making the Pin more useful such as working on features to identify objects with the camera, track your nutrition and connect to other services you rely on. I’m looking forward to trying them out when they arrive, because — when everything works the way it’s supposed to — there’s a glimmer of a good product here.

If there’s a lesson here, though, it’s that rather than splurging on a new device that promises to fix our problems we may be better off forcing ourselves to use the ones we have more judiciously.

The most beloved modern Star Trek shows are both getting renewed, but there's sad news for one of them

The Trek giveth, and the Trek taketh away

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds / Star Trek: Lower Decks

It's a big day of good news and bad news for Star Trek fans, as Paramount giveth and Paramount taketh away. First the good news - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for a fourth season. The beloved Star Trek prequel series has been greenlit for season 4 even before the third season has aired.

In the kinda bad news column, Paramount has also offered up the doubled-edged sword that Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 will premiere in fall 2024 - but it will also be the animated streaming series' final season.

Both announcements were made on social media, with a pair of graphics, seen here:

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will return for a fourth season. The final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks arrives on @paramountplus this fall. pic.twitter.com/FaRy7X8NnI April 12, 2024

As a fan of both shows, I'm obviously torn. I'm delighted that Strange New Worlds is continuing - it's been a delightfully campy but still sincere throwback to the best of classic Star Trek. And I'm excited to know that Lower Decks will be back sooner rather than later.

But I'm still slightly crushed that Boimler, Mariner, Tendi, Rutherford, and their ever expanding cast of crewmates are reaching the end of their journey. It takes a lot to sell me on animated comedies, and Lower Decks hit the mark with both its humor and its loving approach to Trek lore.

That said, the best Star Trek characters have a way of living on. Strange New Worlds itself proves that, with a throwback cast of characters including Captain Christopher Pike, James Kirk, Spock, Uhura, and more.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks had a fan-favorite crossover episode in SNW season 2 in which Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome portrayed their Lower Decks voice characters in live action in a time travel episode.

The 'Amanda Show' alum expressed disappointment at not being included in a recent Emmys FYC panel and claims the directors didn't explain the full nature of the documentary.

Raquel Lee Bolleau

In a TikTok shared on Thursday, Nickelodeon ‘s Amanda Show alum Raquel Lee Bolleau , who was featured in Investigation Discovery’s docuseries Quiet on Set : The Dark Side of TV , says she was left disappointed by her experience with the docuseries about toxic sets at the kids TV network.

Related Stories

Events of the week: 'the sympathizer,' 'fallout' and more, sag-aftra responds to open letter calling for more safety protocols for child actors.

“Do you think they invited me?” asked the former child star in her video, referencing the Los Angeles event.

Bolleau continued (watch, below), “Let me tell you what my problem is with this industry: Quiet on Set did the same thing the industry always does—they get what they want from you and then they’re done. Never did they think that I’d want to be part of a discussion like that.”

She said such treatment has been “a very difficult thing” for her to face, bringing up past wounds from her experience as a child actor. “This industry has done nothing but hurt me, left and right, since I was a child,” Bolleau said.

@raquelleebolleau I really have nothing left for this industry 🎬 it’s all the same… #quietonset #quietonsetthedarksideofkidstv #childactors #raquellee #fypツ ♬ original sound – Raquel Lee Bolleau

Another Quiet on Set participant, Marc Summers, former host of Double Dare , recently said he walked off the docuseries set . “They ambushed me,” he claimed. “They never told me what this documentary was really about. And so, they showed me a video of something that I couldn’t believe was on Nickelodeon and I said, ‘Whoah, let’s stop the tape right here. What are we doing?'”

The co-directors said in response via a statement to  The Hollywood Reporter , “We are clear with each participant about the nature of our projects.”

It’s worth noting that sometimes, in investigative reporting, reporters discover the exact nature of the story while reporting. Still, various allegations against Schneider have been public since 2018 and executive producer and Business Insider reporter Kate Taylor had published an in-depth investigative story on Schneider in August 2022.

Bolleau continued, “Number two, it comes out and you tell me, ‘Oh, you’re going to be on episodes number one and number four. And then you call me the day that the fifth episode is going to come out and you say, ‘Hey, by the way, just to let you know, you’re also in the fifth episode.’ But you also forgot to say, ‘Oh and we’re also going to be having a panel discussion to talk about where you are today and how we can move forward.’ You want me to share my story but you don’t want to involve me in the actual narrative of change?”

THR has reached back out to Robertson and Schwartz and ID for comment.

Following the success of the two-night, four part series, ID greenlit a bonus fifth episode,  Breaking the Silence , that released April 7.

Last month, former  Amanda Show  writer Jenny Kilgen, who is also featured in the doc,  wrote an open letter  to SAG-AFTRA , urging them to “take action to initiate and institute robust child safety protocols to protect young actors.” She also expressed support for state and federal legislation, something Robertson and Schwartz have previously told THR was an area they hoped to see change after the success of the doc. The actors union has since responded by outlining the processes they have in place.
