Inside Nicole Kidman's Relationship With Her Kids Bella And Connor Cruise

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise are the parents of two adopted children, Connor and Isabella "Bella" Cruise. When the couple split, the "Moulin Rogue" actor's relationship with their kids became fractured. She has since moved on with country star Keith Urban and welcomed two girls, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, but there has been much speculation about where things stand with Kidman and her eldest children.

The specifics of their relationship may be vague, but when Kidman speaks about Connor and Bella to the press, there's a lot of love. "Motherhood is about the journey. There are going to be incredible peaks and valleys, whether you are an adopting mother or a birth mother. What a child needs is love," she said in  The Sun  in 2019. She has also made it clear that there is no difference between having adopted or biological children. "It's the emotion of attaching to a child and helping to guide them and rear them [that is important]," she told Tatler in 2018.

They are all grown up, and their mom feels they've turned out well. "They are healthy and sane and together and are great, great people," she told Associated Press (via Daily Mail ) in 2010. "So I'm not one of those people that needs to be reminded of what I have." But that doesn't mean everything has always been perfect. Here's how Nicole Kidman's relationship with Bella and Connor has evolved over the years.

Nicole Kidman adopted her children in in 1992 and 1995

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise married in 1990. The "Batman Forever" actor knew she wanted to start a family with her husband, but the traditional route was not possible for them. "From the minute Tom and I were married, I wanted to have babies," Kidman told Vanity Fair . "And we lost a baby early on, so that was really very traumatic. And that's when we would adopt [our daughter] Bella."

The Oscar winner has been open about her fertility and miscarriage and how it impacted her experience with motherhood. "I wish I'd had more children, but I wasn't given that choice," she told Marie Claire in 2021. She did become a mom for the first time, thanks to adoption. First to Isabella "Bella" Cruise in 1992 and later to Connor Cruise in 1995. The love the star felt for her children was instant.

"When I held Bella in my arms, that was everything. I look into those eyes, and that crazy love happens — it's crazy love because you'll do anything when you have a child," Kidman told The Independent in a 1998 interview. "It opens up a part of your heart you didn't even know was there." At the same time, Kidman is open to them connecting with their birth parents. "That's part of my belief on adoption," she told E! News in 2016. "If a child wants to find their birth mother, I'm absolutely supportive of that."

Nicole Kidman's divorce from Tom Cruise impacted her children

There was a time when Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were one of Hollywood's hottest couples. "He swept me off my feet. I fell madly, passionately in love," she told The Sun. And things between them moved quickly. "I was so young. I look back now, and I'm like, 'What?' I had two kids by the time I was 27, and I'd been married for four years. But that's what I wanted," she shared.

But that ended with their divorce in 2001. Following their split, something seemingly shifted in Kidman's relationship with her children."They live with Tom, which was their choice," she said in 2010, per  Hello!  magazine. "I'd love them to live with us, but what can you do?" Kidman and Tom agreed to joint custody of their children, but there's been much speculation about how much time she spends with them. There would be years without photographs of them in public, and there have been reports that Tom has excluded Kidman from special events, like their son's wedding, per Radar . (In 2019, Connor reportedly married Silvia Zanchi, who is a member of the Church of Scientology.) 

The questions about their dynamic were fueled when Kidman accepted an Emmy for Best Actress in a Limited Series in 2017 for her work in "Big Little Lies" and mentioned only her youngest kids in her speech. "I am also a mother and a wife. I have two little girls, Sunny and Faith," she said. "This is yours." 

They stopped calling Nicole Kidman 'mom'

Nicole Kidman has been reluctant to share too much about her relationship with Bella and Connor Cruise, but she has offered some rather telling details over the years. "My kids don't call me mommy, they don't even call me mom," she once told GMTV (via Marie Claire ). "They call me Nicole, which I hate, and tell them off for it."

To make matters worse, Tom Cruise's second wife, Katie Holmes, had previously gushed about her relationship with his and Kidman's kids. She said in a 2007 interview with Parade (via People ), "His first two children [Connor and Isabella] are incredible, really smart and kind. They call me 'Mom.'" In an interview with Vanity Fair in 2006, Holmes also spoke about the teens and their bond with their sister, Suri Cruise. "It's really special to see them [Bella and Connor] holding their little sister," she said. "To hear them talk about all of the fun things they are going to do together." Following Tom and Holmes' divorce, Suri reportedly became estranged from Tom ;  Suri's current relationship with her older siblings  is unclear.

Despite the complex relationship dynamics between Kidman and her children, she has stressed the importance of motherhood — regardless of the circumstances. "My daughter and son, their life is molded by the way I live," she said in a 2007 interview (via People ). "If I wasn't willing to take on that responsibility, I shouldn't have adopted them." 

Nicole Kidman's children are members of the Church of Scientology

Tom Cruise is arguably one of the most famous members of the Church of Scientology, and his older children, Bella and Connor Cruise, have followed in his footsteps. "They are adults," Nicole Kidman said in a 2018 interview with Who magazine. "They are able to make their own decisions. They have made choices to be Scientologists, and as a mother, it's my job to love them." She added that she would continue to accept them because she is their parent. "No matter what your child does, the child has love, and the child has to know there is available love, and I'm open here," she shared.

Actor and former Scientologist Leah Remini has been far less diplomatic about the Kidman-Cruise kids' upbringing. In her 2015 memoir, "Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology," "The King of Queens" star claimed Bella and Connor were kept away from any outside information that, as she put it, "might get them asking questions." Remini also remembered once asking Bella and Connor about spending time with Kidman. According to Remini, Bella allegedly responded, "Not if I have a choice. Our mom is a f***ing SP." "SP" stands for "suppressive person," which is the term the church uses for anyone who they view as an enemy.

Despite this, Kidman is supportive. "I've chosen not to speak publicly about Scientology. I have two children who are Scientologists — Connor and Isabella — and I utterly respect their beliefs," she told The Hollywood Reporter in 2013.

Nicole Kidman wants her relationship with her kids to remain private

Nicole Kidman is one of the biggest stars in the entertainment industry. As such, there will always be an interest in what she does and what happens in her personal life. While she is willing to share some of it with fans, like her fertility issues, there are other aspects she prefers to keep under wraps, like her relationship with her two oldest children. "I'm very private about all that. I have to protect all those relationships," she said in an interview with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 2018 (via Hello! magazine ). "I know 150 percent that I would give up my life for my children because it's what my purpose is." Kidman has also made a point of keeping her two youngest children, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, away from the spotlight.

Bella and Connor Cruise seem to be more than fine with leading relatively quiet lives. "[Connor] is DJing, he's doing really well. Bella lives in London now," Kidman said in a 2013 interview with " Extra ." "I think that, you know, everybody has their own path, and when they find their path, it's such relief as a parent, you know?" She has also praised them for who they have become. In a 2014 interview with The Weekly , she said, "They are generous, kind, and hardworking, and these are traits that I love to see in my children."

Nicole Kidman has a deep love for her children

In the interviews Nicole Kidman has given about her children, she has made one thing clear: she loves them. While promoting her film "Lion," which is a story that involves adoption, she told Town & Country , "This movie is a love letter to my children." The 2016 biographical feature, which also stars Dev Patel, follows a young man who spent the bulk of his childhood with adoptive parents and wants to find his biological family. "I relate to that. I feel that for my own children who are adopted," Kidman said. "It's not about anything else other than 'I wanted you.' It's that deep and personal, and whatever your journey is, I'm here to love and support you."

Despite the obvious love she has for Bella and Connor, Kidman has been honest about how parenting can be a challenge. No matter what, she approaches it with openness and offers support. "Parenting is about learning who they are, not making them what you want them to be — letting them find their way then supporting them," she told The Sun. "It's rigorous. You're constantly looking at yourself, so you're not placing these expectations on a child." When asked to name the most difficult thing about being a mother in Vogue's "73 Questions" series, she replied, "Knowing I won't be here forever, so I won't always be here to take care of them."

Bella Cruise moved to London and lives her life mostly out of the spotlight, although she has a public Instagram page and refers to herself as Bella Kidman Cruise. There is much chatter about her bond with her mom, but she set the record straight in a 2012 interview with New Idea magazine (via E! News ). "I love mom. She's my mom. She's great. I see her sometimes, and I speak to her," she said. "We're a very close family. I love all of our family."

In 2015, Bella married Max Parker at the Dorchester Hotel. Neither Nicole Kidman nor Tom Cruise were there. While there was speculation about why Bella's parents skipped out on the wedding, a tipster told the Daily Mail  that they simply wanted to avoid creating a media frenzy. The source also claimed Kidman was involved in the planning process.

The wedding may have excluded Kidman, but Bella's marriage is believed to have opened doors. About a year after the wedding, Bella and Kidman reunited. "It was a very emotional moment for all of them, especially Nicole," a tipster told Woman's Day Australia (via New Zealand Herald ) in 2016. "It didn't take long for her to burst into tears, and Bella soon followed." This was also an opportunity for the actor to meet Parker, and the source said she took "an instant liking" to him.

Connor Cruise says he has a 'solid' relationship with his mom

While they may not be as close as Nicole Kidman would hope, Connor Cruise has said things are good between them. "I love my mum," he said in an interview with Woman's Day in 2014. "I don't care what people say; I know that me and Mum are solid. I love her a lot. My family means everything. Yeah, I love my music, but the family comes before everything else."

His mother sure seems to share these sentiments about family. In an interview with The Weekly, the actor spoke about her children and husband, Keith Urban. "At this stage of my life, and with time being so precious, the joy I get from us as a family outweighs any joy in any other area of my life by far," she said. 

In addition to working as a DJ, Connor is a keen fisherman, golfs from time to time, and enjoys barbecuing meat. Connor resides in Clearwater, Florida — yes, near Scientology headquarters and one of dad Tom Cruise's many properties. A source told People in 2018, "Connor has a pretty simple life in Clearwater." Though they lead entirely different lives, Kidman supports the path her son has chosen to follow. "Nicole only wants the best for Connor, but she gives him the freedom to make his own decisions, and that includes his religious beliefs and where he wants to live," a tipster told Hollywood Life .

Finding images of Tom Cruise’s adopted daughter is usually a mission impossible — until now.

Isabella “Bella” Kidman Cruise made a rare social media appearance on Sunday, Sept. 17, when she shared a selfie on her Instagram .

In the carefree picture captioned “What a summer,” the 30-year-old looks coyly at the camera. Donning a simple white top with a cute bow decorating her décolletage, the brunette shows off her appreciation of jewelry wearing a number of gold necklaces around her neck and a gold ring in her nose.

Bella, an artist, normally shares images of work with her nearly 52,000 followers.

According to her website , “Bella has been drawing ever since her wee hands could pick up a pen. Since that point in time she’s been evolving in her arts.”

Bella sells her work on reasonably priced totes, pins and limited edition prints. “Her go-to medium was pen and paper for most of her life,” the site explains. “However, she is now venturing into other formats and mediums. Including digital. Which has been a bit of a game changer in her opinion.”

Bella was adopted by Cruise, 60, and Nicole Kidman, 55, in 1992 after the couple married in 1990. The Hollywood pair also share a son Connor, 28.

Bella and Conor have chosen to stay mostly out of the limelight and in the past their superstar parents have chosen to keep their children’s lives out of the public eye as well.

“I’m very private about all that,” the Academy Award-winning actress told Australian outlet  Who  in 2018. “I have to protect all those relationships. I know 150 per cent that I would give up my life for my children because it’s what my purpose is.”

Kidman is set to be awarded the Life Achievement Award at the The American Film Institute (AFI) ceremony on June 10, but it is rumored that Connor and Bella may not be in attendance although they have both been invited.

“Nicole knows Connor is extremely loyal to his dad so she doesn’t expect him to come, but the invitation is there for both of them,” an alleged source tells  New Idea . ‘It’s an event they have every right to celebrate along with the rest of Nicole’s family.”

The source added: “Nicole is trying to limit her expectations, but is clinging to hope Bella might make it.”

Also set to be in attendance at the ceremony are Kidman’s two daughters Sunday, 14, and Faith, 12, whom she shares with her husband Keith Urban.

The media's obsession with  Tom Cruise's daughter with Katie Holmes, Suri , in the mid-to-late-2000s, may have made it seem she was the actor's first child, but Cruise has two children with Nicole Kidman. In the mid-'90s, the "Eyes Wide Shut" co-stars adopted Isabella — known as Bella — and Connor, born in December 1992 and January 1995, respectively. Bella and Connor, whose adoptions were conducted pretty quietly and in secret, went on to become a delicate subject throughout  Cruise and Kidman's messy divorce .

The "Days of Thunder" actors' relationship played out in the early days of Cruise's involvement with the Church of Scientology . Bella Kidman Cruise is a Scientologist like her father

Bella Kidman Cruise has chosen to live a lifestyle completely different from Tom Cruise. But that excludes his religion. Bella, like her brother Connor, continued to practice Scientology after moving out on their own. And she isn't shy about it. In 2019, Bella even sent out a promo email in which she disclosed being an auditor for the church's London organization. The Church of Scientology defines an auditor as a "minister or minister-in-training," per its website .

Bella also gushed about the positive effect the training to become an auditor had on her. "I would have drowned in my own problems if you hadn't been there to sup me or get me through the preliminaries," she wrote, using the space to thank her father and aunt, Tom's sister Cass Mapother. It was a rare public nod to her father, whom she never addresses publicly.

Given Nicole Kidman's complicated relationship with the church, it has been speculated that Bella's involvement with the religion has driven a wedge between mother and daughter. As noted by Us Weekly , in her 2015 memoir, "Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology," Leah Remini claimed Bella had no desire to have a relationship with her mother. Kidman, however, has said she respects their path. "They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions," she told Who. "They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it's my job to love them."

Indeed,  Isabella "Bella" Kidman Cruise shared a rare selfie to her Instagram Story on Wednesday, July 7 of herself while watching England's national soccer team take on Denmark during the Euro 2020 semifinals. The black-and-white footage showed her with a tense expression while dressed casually in a T-shirt as the game was tied at the end of regulation. 

"My face during extra time... fingers crossed," the 28-year-old artist captioned it, adding an emoji of the English flag. Bella and Max Parker , her husband of five years , live together in London, England.

Luckily for her and any other of the nation's supporters, England's squad prevailed 2 to 1 and will face Italy in the final at London's Wembley Stadium on Sunday, July 11. 

Bella infrequently provides glimpses at her personal life. Back in February, she posted a black-and-white selfie , along with a caption drawing attention to her artwork that was for sale.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s adopted daughter, Bella, shared a rare social media snap of herself on Monday.

The rarely-photographed artist, 30, showed off her nose ring as she smoldered at the camera while reflecting on the last few months of the year.

“What a summer,” she captioned the photo, which was shared to her Instagram Story .

Bella, the eldest child of the Hollywood stars, wore a lacy sheer blouse over a black top and accessorized with a chic black beret.

She also rocked a fresh face of makeup, opting for just a light swipe of mascara on her eyelashes, a touch of blush on her cheeks, and bushy brushed-up brows.

Bella topped off her look with a red lip.

The illustrator, who often uses her social media account to share her abstract masterpieces, tends to keep a low profile – but does like to switch up her ‘do.

In March, she surprised followers when she debuted her new choppy haircut in another rare selfie on Instagram.

Bella is known for experimenting with different hairstyles, from dying her hair blond or red to rocking a chic bob or a short fringe.

The designer, who launched a clothing line in 2018 and lives in London with husband Max Parker, rarely shares glimpses of her personal life and steers clear of high-profile events.

Tom, 61, and Kidman, 56, adopted Bella and her brother Connor, 28, during their 11-year marriage. The “Big Little Lies” alum and “Top Gun” star divorced in 2001.

Kidman has previously addressed Bella and Connor’s decision to follow in their father’s footsteps and practice Scientology, sharing that she is supportive.

“They are adults,” the actress said in a 2018 interview with Who.com . “They are able to make their own decisions. They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them. And I am an example of that tolerance and that’s what I believe – that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open here.”

After her split from Tom, Kidman married Keith Urban, 55, in 2006 and the couple welcomed two daughters: Sunday, 15, and Faith, 12. Kidman gave birth to Sunday in 2008 and welcomed Faith via surrogate two years later.

Rumors have swirled for years that Bella is estranged from her parents, though she shut down the rumors in 2016.

NICOLE Kidman has reportedly caught up with her daughter, Isabella Cruise, in London and met her son-in-law for the first time in signs that their relationship is improving.

Kidman, 49, has had a rocky relationship with her two adopted children, Isabella, 23 and Connor, 21, since her divorce from their father Tom Cruise.

The pair reportedly turned their back on Kidman after the split with suggestions that the Church of Scientology deemed her a “suppressive person”, meaning they needed to cut her out of their lives. Both Isabella and Connor are devoted Scientologists.

Woman’s Day reports that Kidman met her daughter’s husband, IT consultant Max Parker, for the first time, almost a year after they got married — without either of their parents invited.

“It was a very emotional moment for all of them, especially Nicole,” a source told the magazine. “It didn’t take long for her to burst into tears, and Bella soon followed.”

“Nic has been trying to build bridges with Bella since the start of the year,” the insider said. “Nicole took an instant liking to Max and could see that he and Bella get on really well.”

Isabella, who lives in the working class suburb of Croydon, told New Idea earlier this year that she was close to both her parents despite not inviting either to her wedding.

“Of course we talk, they’re my parents’, adding, anyone who says otherwise is ‘full of s**t,” she said.

DJ Connor Cruise has equally moved to reject claims that he and Kidman don’t talk.

“I don’t care what people say. I know that me and mum are solid. I love her a lot. My family means everything. Yeah, I love my music, but the family comes before everything else,” he said.

The Australian actress has said in the past that her adopted children insist on calling her ‘Nicole’. They were also surprisingly absent at the funeral of their grandfather, Antony Kidman, in Sydney.

Cruise and Kidman adopted Isabella in 1993 and Connor in 1995. They ended their 10-year marriage in 2001.

Kidman has said in the past that she wishes she was closer to Connor and Isabella.

“They live with Tom, which was their choice,” Kidman told Hello! magazine in 2010. “I’d love them to live with us, but what can you do?”

“I’ve chosen not to speak publicly about Scientology,” she told Vanity Fair in 2013. “I have two children who are Scientologists — Connor and Isabella — and I utterly respect their beliefs.”

Cruise and Kidman have never revealed what drove them apart with Cruise’s only comment on the matter being, “Nicole knows what she did.”

Kidman showed that she holds no grudges with her ex husband, saying in 2006, “He was huge; still is. To me, he was just Tom, but to everybody else, he is huge. But he was lovely to me and I loved him. I still love him.”

Cruise went on to marry Dawson’s Creek star Katie Holmes in 2006 with daughter Suri born that same year. Since Holmes divorced him in 2012 he has reportedly had very little contact with Suri.

Kidman married Keith Urban in 2006. She had daughter Sunday Rose in 2008 and Faith Margaret in 2010 via surrogacy.

Although he has been photographed in various locations (like Birmingham and the Cotswolds) it's noteworthy that he appears to have stopped visiting the UK Scientology headquarters.

Furthermore, he hasn't been seen at the Church of Scientology building in central London in recent times, either. These observations are contributing to the speculation that the actor might be distancing himself from Scientology.

However, similar rumors have been spreading for years. Reports of Tom’s potential separation from the church initially emerged in 2021 during a period when the actor was reportedly experiencing a "religious crisis."

Tom’s Daughter Bella Remains An Active Scientologist

What’s more, Tom and Nicole’s children, Isabella and Connor, reportedly remain active members in the religion, which could cause tension between them and their famous father.

In 2019, Isabella announced that she had been elevated to the role of an auditor within the Church of Scientology. An auditor is responsible for questioning other Scientologists about their personal lives. In a promotional video, she expressed that the religion had been instrumental in saving her life.

“It’s a few meltdowns and running to the bathroom to have a mini episode, but it is worth everything because you will get through,” she said the time.

“This is a gift to yourself and so many others. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t going to be an auditor or aren’t going to join staff,” Bella continued. “If you are going to make it as a being for the long run you NEED this. That’s the truth… so stop messing around and get going.”

Scientology is alleged to have contributed to Tom’s divorce from Nicole Kidman, who has actively refused to comment on her children and ex’s involvement in the mysterious religion. It also apparently fueled Tom’s divorce from Katie Holmes, with whom he shares an 17-year old daughter, Suri, whom he reportedly hasn’t seen in over a decade.

The fashion designer has spoken out about her training as a Scientology auditor

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman 's daughter, Isabella , is opening up about Scientology in a letter shared with church members.

Isabella, who is also known as Bella, wrote a testimonial about her training as an auditor within the Church of Scientology. It was first posted by Tony Ortega, a prominent critic of the church.

Cruise, a high-ranking Scientologist, and Kidman also have a son, Connor, 24. The two divorced in 2001.

An auditor within the church is extensively trained to help other members through intense self-examination sessions with the help of an electronic device called the E-meter.

In her testimonial written for the London branch of the organization, Bella, 26, described the training as "exactly what I needed."

"This IS what I had been searching for. The missing piece. Suddenly everything began to make sense," she wrote.

Bella added, "We all need to do this. It's hard work. It's a lot of effort. It's a few meltdowns and running to the bathroom to have a mini-episode, but it is worth everything because you will get through."

"Thank you to my Dad for everything," she continued, while also thanking her aunt, the actor's sister, Cass Mapother. "I would have drowned in my own problems if you hadn't been there to sup [sic] me or get me through the preliminaries. It took a whole family and an org to get me here."

She also thanked "COB," or the church's chairman of the board, David Miscavige, as well as Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.

Bella has lived a quiet life outside the spotlight, only making headlines in 2015 for her marriage to Max Parker. She launched a clothing line in February 2018 called BKC (Bella Kidman Cruise).

Cruise and Kidman have respected their children's privacy. A source told PEOPLE in July 2018 the actor "loves all his children. And each of them has a right to their own story."

When asked about her relationship with her oldest children by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in November 2018, Kidman said, "I'm very private about all that," as reported by Australia's Who Magazine . "I have to protect all those relationships. I know 150% that I would give up my life for my children because it's what my purpose is."
