Rajaji National Park : It is gifted with immaculate beauteousness covering an area of 820sqkms on the edge of the Doon Valley . It is situated around 10kms from Haridwar . Rajaji National Park was established in 1996 and has over 23 species of mammals and 315 avifauna species. It is a safe haven for panther, bear, chital, elephant, tiger, sambar, wild boar, barking deer, python, monitor lizard, etc. Elephant Safari is also available at Chilla and Dholkand.

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple : Thousands of devotees visit Neelkanth Mahadev every month throughout the year. It is situated on the summit of the mountain across the sacred Ganga River. According to mythology, this is the place where Lord Shiva drank the venom produced during 'Sagar Manthan' which turned his throat blue and was thus the place was named as Neelkanth. Neelkanth and Mahadev are names of Lord Shiva. It is situated 66kms from Dehradun city.

Haridwar, "the Gateway to God", is one of the oldest living cities and one of the seven holiest places in India. (The others are Varanasi/Kashi , Kanchipuram, Ayodhya, Ujjain , Mathura, and Dwarka). Hindu gods are believed to have incarnated at these places various avatars. For Hindus, a pilgrimage to Haridwar will provide liberation from the endless cycle of death and rebirth.

The area around the Ganga River is made up of a fascinating and colorful collection of sadhus (holy men), pundits (Hindu priests), pilgrims, guides, and beggars. Every evening, the river comes alive with the magic of the aarti (worship with fire), as lamps are lit, prayers are offered, and small candles are floated down the river. A visit to this holy city will give you great insight into some of what makes India tick.

History and Mythology

Haridwar's long history can be traced all the way back to ancient Hindu texts such as the Rig Veda and The Mahabharata . During that time it was also referred to as Gangadwara, the gate of the Ganga River (where it descends from the mountains to the plains).

Hindu mythology says that a king named Bhagiratha brought the Ganga River to earth, with the help of Lord Shiva, to remove a curse and purify the ashes of his ancestors so they could go to heaven. Apparently, Lord Shiva released the river from his hair at Haridwar.

Sacred Har ki Pauri ghat is believed to have been built in the 1st century BC by Emperor Vikaramaditya in memory of his brother, Bharthari, who came to Haridwar to meditate by the river and passed away there. Legend has it that Lord Vishnu came and left his footprint on a stone wall at Har ki Pauri, giving rise to its name meaning "Footsteps of God".

Haridwar sits alongside the Ganga (Ganges) River near Rishikesh , at the base of the Shivalik mountain range in Uttarakhand.

How to Get There

Trains from major cities all over India stop at Haridwar on their way to Dehradun. For those coming from Delhi to Haridwar , it takes a minimum of four hours to get there by train or six hours by road.

The nearest airport is Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Haridwar. Travel time from the airport to Haridwar is about an hour. Expect to pay 1,500-2,000 rupees upwards for a private taxi, depending on the type of vehicle. Shubh Yatra Travels offers a reliable service that you can book in advance. Taxis are available at the airport. However, demand is high during peak season and drivers may quote inflated prices.

The best time to visit Haridwar is from October to March. Summers, from April to July, get very hot in Haridwar. Temperatures hover around 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). The clean water of the Ganges is really refreshing though, and May to June is regarded as peak season. The monsoon season , from July to September, is unsuitable to taking a dip in the Ganges as the river bank becomes unstable and currents are strong because of the rain. Winters, from November until February, get cold during the night. As a result, the water is chilly, but there's also mist in the air which makes Haridwar particularly scenic at that time of year.

The most famous festival to take place at Haridwar is the Kumbh Mela , held there once every 12 years. It draws tens of millions of pilgrims who come to bathe in the Ganges and be absolved of their sins. The next Kumbh Mela will be held in Haridwar in 2021.

In addition, many other religious Hindu festivals are celebrated in Haridwar. Some of the most popular ones are the Kanwar Mela (July or August) devoted to Lord Shiva, Somwati Amavasya (July), Ganga Dussehra (June), Kartik Poornima (November), and Baisakhi (April).

Haridwar's top attractions are its temples (particularly Mansa Devi temple , where the wish fulfilling goddess resides), ghats (steps leading down to the river), and Ganga River. Take a holy dip and cleanse your sins.

The city's iconic Ghanta Ghar (clock tower) at Har ki Pauri ghat was recently given a new look as part of the Haridwar Mural Project , which aims to explore unconventional canvases for public art. The project is being undertaken by art retailer Mojarto in association with Namami Gange (an initiative for the rejuvenation and preservation of the Ganga River). The painting of the clock tower, by artist Harshvardhan Kadam (who led the Pune Street Art Project), is based on the scriptures and theories of the Viman Shastra . It blends Indian mythology with contemporary art. Haridwar's new Chandi Ghat has also been decorated with a colorful turtle and ocean scene , painted by celebrated Mexican artist Senkoe. It signifies how the cleaning of the river and ghats is bringing wildlife back.

As the sun sets, head to Har ki Pauri ghat to witness the captivating Ganga Aarti (prayer ceremony) at around 6-7 p.m. every night depending on the time of year. Fiery lamps combined with the chanting of mantras , clanking of bells and enthusiastic crowd, is very powerful and moving.

Daksha Mahadev temple, the oldest temple in the area, also has some intriguing evening rituals. According to legend, Lord Shiva's first wife Sati jumped into the holy fire and died there, in response to her father spurning him.

If you're interested in Ayurvedic medicine , you'll find many roots and shrubs that are grown in the Himalayas readily available there.

Bara Bazaar, on Railway Road between Har ki Pauri and Upper Road, is a popular area to shop. It has all sorts of brass items, religious items, and Ayurvedic medicines. A bit further along, Moti Bazaar on Upper Road towards the north of the canal, is Haridwar's main market area. It offers a wide variety of inexpensive goods as well.

Rajaji National Park offers unspoiled natural beauty only 10 kilometers (six miles) from Haridwar. Its eco-system is estimated to be 10 million years old, and a diverse range of wildlife can be seen there, including elephants.

Those keen to learn more about yoga and Ayurveda can visit Baba Ramdev's Patanjali Yogpreeth , at Bahadrabad near Haridwar. This interesting educational institution aims to link ancient wisdom with modern science.

Many people visit Rishikesh as a side trip as well. Although it's only less than an hour from Haridwar, the vibe is very different there. After you have offered your prayers, and paid respects to Goddess Ganga in Haridwar, you might want to head out for a short vacation. There are many wonderful destinations around this hill town, and there is much to explore.

Just 46 minutes away from Haridwar, Rishikesh is yet another beautiful little place that makes your heart melt. Once again, just like Haridwar, the magic of the River Ganga is quite evident here. One of the best things to do here is to camp by the river, and go on an adventurous river rafting trip. This is also home to yoga retreats, surrounded by the mighty Himalayas, you are in the lap of utmost peace and spirituality.

​Rajaji National Park

Another national park in the list, this one is on the foothills of the Himalayas, spread across the districts of Haridwar, Dehradun, and Pauri Garhwal. The national park is home to numerous wildlife species, such as Bengal tiger, leopards, king cobras among many others. It is in the district of Hardiwar, and hence that makes it a wonderful day trip destination. A great fun for the entire family.

Its charm lies in its obscurity; while most people are crowding in Mussoorie, and spending long hours in crowded places, you can have utmost peace here. Landour is an easygoing destination, and is perfect for writers. After all, this is where Ruskin Bond resides.

This is another charming destination close to Haridwar, which gets a lot of tourist footfall. The Naini Lake is the centre of attraction here, and boating here is a must-do. A lovely place for long walks, especially because this is nature’s paradise. There are some lovely hidden trails that you could explore during your stay here. It is close to 5:30 from Haridwar.

If you have enough time in hand, we suggest you go to Shimla. This popular Himalayan getaway is located in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Shimla attracts a lot of crowd, but is closer than Manali is from Hardiwar. So you might as well get a whiff of Himachal Pradesh here. It is a long drive but a nice one to Shimla, and takes close to 7 hours.

​Jageshwar Dham

A fine place for some alone time, to wait and ponder, to put a pause to your life. Jageshwar Dham is home to a group of 125 ancient temples that date back to the 7th to 14th centuries. Many of these are dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is about 9 hours away from Haridwar, and is a fine place for anyone who is spiritually inclined.

1. Rishikesh

Rishikesh, sometimes called Hrishikesh, is indeed a town governed by Rishikesh Municipal Corporation and a subdistrict in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun region. It is known as such “Garhwal Himalayas” and indeed the “Yoga Capital of the World,” and therefore is situated in north India’s Himalayan range. It is located 21 kilometres (13 miles) north of Haridwar and 45 kilometres (28 miles) southeast of Dehradun, the state capital. The Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is a Hindu temple devoted to Lord Shiva’s aspect Nilkanth. The temple is located in the Pauri Garhwal area of Uttarakhand, India, around 32 kilometres from Rishikesh. The temple architecture is heavily influenced by Dravidian temple architecture. The temple is a renowned Hindu pilgrimage place dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is surrounded by lush woods next to the Nar-Narayan mountain ranges.

It is Uttrakhand’s eighth-largest city. Its previous name was “Khohdwar,” which means “Khoh’s Gateway”, as it is located on the Khoh’s bank. It is located in the southwestern portion of the state and serves as one of its principal entry ports. Initially secluded and unknown, it rose to prominence after the British connected it with railroads in 1890. 8. Mussoorie

Mussoorie, popularly known as the Queen of the Hills, is one of the country’s most popular hill stations. 9. Devprayag

Devprayag is a town and a Nagar panchayat (municipality) in Tehri Garhwal District in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is the final of the Panch Prayag (five confluences) of the Alaknanda River, where it meets the Bhagirathi river, and both rivers flow on as the Ganges river or Ganga. Perhaps guru Dev Sharma lived his religious life, bringing origin to its original title, Devprayag. It is one of the five sacred confluences in the highlands and a popular pilgrimage site for devoted Hindus. In Sanskrit, “Devprayag” means “Godly Confluence.” According to Hindu texts, Devprayag is the sacred occasion of the union of two visible gods.

Chamba is a town and hill station in the district of Tehri Garhwal in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is located at the crossroads of highways leading from Mussoorie and Rishikesh to the Tehri Dam reservoir and New Tehri. The town is around 50 kilometres from Mussoorie and is also close to Dhanaulti, Surkanda Devi Temple, Ranichauri, New Tehri, and Kanatal, which is located midway between Chamba and Dhanaulti. Chamba is located at an elevation of 1600 metres above sea level. From Delhi, it takes roughly 7-8 hours to go to Chamba via Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Narendranagar (290 km).

11. Dhanaulti

Dhanaulti, a small town in Uttarakhand, has become a popular winter holiday destination by its tranquil views and closeness to Delhi and many other cities. This enchanting hill station is situated 2286 meters above sea level and offers spectacular views of the beautiful Himalayas. Dhanaulti is adjacent to prominent Uttarakhand mountain ranges such as Mussoorie, Tehri, Kanatal, and Chamba. The velvety rhododendrons, deodar, and towering oak woods surround this hillside town. Because the hill station receives a lot of snow throughout the winter, many visitors come here.

12. Lansdowne

Lansdowne is one of India’s most peaceful and pristine hill stations, and it has long been a favourite tourist destination for British visitors. One of the most popular places in Haridwar, Har Ki Pauri is a ghat, which was built by King Vikramaditya. It is believed that Vikramaditya ordered for this ghat to be constructed in the memory of his brother Bharthari. However, Sati was determined to attend the event. On seeing her arrive at the yagna, her father, Daksha became furious and started to hurl insults at her and Lord Shiva. Sati tried to placate her father, but failed.

Finally, when she could take it no more, she flew into a rage and took the form of Goddess Adi Parashakti and introduced herself to Daksha as the Eternal Power. She declared that she would give up her mortal life by jumping into the sacrificial fire.

Learning about the incident, Lord Shiva became enraged and decapitated Daksha in his Virbhadra avatar, the destructive incarnation. However, later Lord Shiva relented and restored all that was destroyed and brought back to life all those he had slain including King Daksha whose head he substituted with that of a goat. Daksha was humbled by both Shiva’s show of strength as well as his grace. He completely changed and became an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva.

1. Har Ki Pauri Ghat

The first site which all our guests visit in Haridwar or you can say that from where you should start your tour of Haridwar is Har Ki Pauri Ghat.

Har ki Pauri is a place, where at all times, you will see devotees bathing in the flowing river of the Ganga to wash away their sins and to purify their bodies.

Har ki Pauri is more than twenty centuries old. There are temples, shops, all along Har ki Pauri. Ganga Aarti is held every evening here where many priests light up large lamps to offer prayers to River Ganga.

They chant Sanskrit hymns in unison and musicians play gongs in rhythm to these chants. Thousands of devotees join in these prayers, and in the fading evening light, the entire place looks divine and oozing with spiritual energy.

After the prayers, devotees float small diyas in the flowing river Ganga, and the flickering glow of these small lamps light up the atmosphere.

2. Ganga Aarti

Ganga Aarti is one of the must-have experiences in Haridwar. In the evenings, priests hold huge lamps and chant prayers and Sanskrit hymns to Ganga River, and are joined by thousands who attend the event.

The chanting of hymns fills the entire atmosphere with a devotional aura, and the scene at the ghat is one not to be missed at all in Haridwar. Thousands who watch the event leave mesmerized by the spiritual energy of the place.

3. Mansa Devi Temple

Mansa Devi Temple is built on a hill and there’s a ropeway to reach the temple. It’s another popular temple in Haridwar, and is one of the great temples, which is devoted to the Goddess Mansa, a divine form of Goddess Parvati.

Its very name means wish, and here thousands of devotees visit to have their wishes fulfilled. Both Mansa Devi Temple and Chandi Devi Temple are close to each other, and you can visit them both when you’re touring Haridwar.

4. Chandi Devi Temple

According to ancient scriptures, it’s at this place that Goddess Chandi slayed the demons Chanda and Munda. Chandi Devi Temple is hugely popular in Haridwar as it’s believed to grant the wishes of devotees.

You will have to hike up a small hill to reach Chandi Devi Temple, or take a ropeway which is a more thrilling way to reach the temple. From the temple, you will see an unending panorama of Haridwar and the flowing Ganga River.

5. Maya Devi Temple

This temple is one of the most visited temples in Haridwar, and is considered to grant wishes of its devotees. Goddess Maya is a divine form of Shakti and this temple is devoted to her.

This temple is also important as Haridwar was once called Mayapuri and Goddess Maya is the Mother Goddess of Haridwar.

6. daksh prajapati temple.

Daksh Prajapati Temple

It’s also called Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple, and this is one of the famous Haridwar temples where Shivratri celebrations are a sight to behold. The temple is named after Daksh Prajapati, father to Goddess Sati.

The walls of this temple have stories etched from the great Hindu mythology, and are very interesting to watch. There are idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Sati, who are the chief deities of this temple.

There is a temple of Goddess Sati and a large space called Yagna Kund, and a thousand year old Banyan Tree. On your tour of Haridwar, you must visit the Daksh Mahadev Temple.

7. Vaishno Devi Temple

This temple was built to look like a replica of the famous Vaishno Devi Temple of Kashmir. The temple of Goddess Vaishno Devi is one of the most religious places in Haridwar, and also one of the most exciting to visit.

All through the temple, you will have to climb stairs, crawl through tunnels, and pass caves. All these are man-made to give you an idea of the rocky terrain of Kashmir where the original temple of Vaishno Devi is located.

There are many idols here like that of Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesh, Lord Shiva & others. The entire temple is a delight to visit and you should not miss Vaishno Devi Temple of Haridwar on your next visit to this ancient city.

8. Bharat Mata Temple

There are many things that make Bharat Mata Mandir stand out as a most unique place to visit in Haridwar. This temple does not have a typical temple structure found in most Hindu temples.

It’s eight storey high, and on every floor, you will find a different theme of India shown through statues, idols, paintings and sculptures. Here, India is worshipped as the Mother Goddess, and on the ground floor, there is a huge model of the India map.

You can see magnificent landscape of Haridwar from the temple, and it’s a tourist experience that you must have when you tour Haridwar.

9. Pawan Dham Haridwar

Exquisite mirror work and glasswork is what will amaze you in Pawan Dham. This temple is also a must visit in Haridwar, and here you will see idols of gods, goddesses, saints encased in a glass box with colored mirrors adding to the décor of the place.

Paintings are also made of colored glass, and it’s one of the most attractive temples you can visit in Haridwar. The sparkling glow of glass and mirrors will charm you in this temple.

10. Shanti Kunj

Another place in Haridwar where you will see how ancient Hindu culture and traditions are practiced daily is Shanti Kunj. This is a place where training is given to students who wish to attain spiritual knowledge, and understand centuries old Indian culture.

There are various places within Shanti Kunj like Gayatri Mata Temple, Akhand Deep, Yoga Shala where you can feel the divine powers and peace.

Ghats of Haridwar

Haridwar is a place of temples and ghats, and you will find many ghats here where devotees bathe in the holy waters of the Ganga, and wash away their sins. Some of the must-visit ghats in Haridwar are:

11.1 Gau Ghat

Gau means a cow, and is considered immensely

sacred animal and killing it is considered as a great sin. In Gau Ghat, people come to bathe in the holy waters to free themselves of the sin of killing a cow.

Gau Ghat is also where the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru were immersed in the waters of the holy Ganga.

11.2 Vishnu Ghat

Vishnu Ghat is close to Har ki Pauri and is less crowded than other ghats. Vishnu Ghat is also the cleanest ghats in Haridwar, and many devotees who worship the divine forms of Lord Vishnu come here to bathe in the waters and free themselves of their sins.

11.3 Birla Ghat

Just next to Vishnu Ghat is Birla Ghat, one of the oldest ghats in Haridwar. Like in other ghats too, there are stairs leading to the river flowing below, and you can have a dip in its waters.

There are plenty of eateries around the ghat, and security barricades to prevent people from drowning accidentally.

12. Swami Vivekanand Park

Nature lovers will love going to Swami Vivekananda Park in Haridwar. You can sit in the midst of lush greenery and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the park. The park is great for picnics too.

There are many flowers to attract you, and can run on jogging tracks inside the park. There is a huge statue of Swami Vivekananda and Lord Shiva in the park.

Harihar Ashram in Kankhal is situated on the banks of the Ganga. This is one of the oldest ashrams in Haridwar.

A Rudraksha Tree is also in this temple, and people collect Rudraksha from the tree to get rid of problems.

If you want to meditate and have interest in spiritual matters, than Ma Anandmayi Ashram in Haridwar is a place to go. This place has a Samadhi or final resting place of Ma Anandmayi, a prominent Bengali mystic saint.

14. Doodhadhari Barfani Temple

If you want to see temples of magnificent architecture in Haridwar, then you must visit Doodhadhari Barfani Temple. This temple has some amazing marble architecture and the interiors and exteriors of this temple are fabulous.

Just close to an hour’s drive from Haridwar will take you to Rishikesh. This ‘Yoga Capital of the World’ is also a mesmerizing tourist destination of Uttarakhand.

You will see the beauty of Himalayan landscapes, go to attend the famous Maha Aarti in Triveni Ghat, see the spiritual vibes of Beatles Ashram and do a lot more activities.

Temples here are situated in scenic surroundings like Kunjapuri Temple and there are more mystical places like Vashisht Gufa.

– Lakshman Jhula

2. Patanjali Yogpeeth trust

Those interested in Yoga and Ayurveda must visit Patanjali Yog Peeth. It’s named after Patanjali, a great Indian scholar saint who wrote ancient manuscripts on Yoga and Ayurveda. Patanjali Yog Peeth is also a very famous medical and research institution of Swami Ramdev.

People come here for medications and treatment from various ailments and diseases. There are laboratories, clinics, residential accommodation for students. The architecture and design of the institute is wonderful to watch and there is a huge place with green gardens and soothing in atmosphere.

3. Rajaji National Park

You can just imagine how large this park is by the fact that three large national parks and sanctuaries were combined to form Rajaji National Park. It’s one of the best places to visit in Haridwar.
