More than 200 hot air balloons from around the world will be ascending from Longleat next week as part of Europe’s largest annual hot air balloon event.

Now in its fourth year, Sky Safari is one of the Wiltshire attraction’s most popular events; featuring spectacular mass launches, tethered daytime displays and dramatic night glows.

Pilots from as far afield as the USA, United Arab Emirates and Japan will be taking part in the event, running from Friday, September 13 to Sunday, September 15, as part of more than 160 individual teams - some of which will be flying multiple hot air balloons.

The star of this year’s event is Adelaide, a giant koala, which will be taking to the skies to celebrate the opening of Longleat’s new Koala Creek which is home to a group of the iconic Australian marsupials.

Adelaide is part of an aerial ‘Safari Park’ which also features Simbaloo the lion, a cheetah called Duma, a panther, a wolf, a fox, a parrot an owl and a guinea pig.

There will be as many as 30 other special shaped balloons making an appearance over the weekend; either flying or taking part in tethered displays with everything from a flying recreation of the Brandenburg Gate, a giant emoji and a full-sized version of the famous animated balloon from Disney’s ‘Up’.

Night glows, where tethered balloons are choreographed to a specially selected soundtrack, lighting up the night sky as their burners fire up in time to the music, will be taking place on Friday and Saturday evenings.

“This year’s Sky Safari is set to be the biggest and most spectacular to date with more than 200 balloons due to take to the skies throughout the event,” said Steve Mytton from Longleat.

longleat safari park balloon festival

The skies are set to be filled with over 100 hot air balloons this September as Longleat Safari Park’s Sky Safari returns for another year.

The park has scheduled for daily mass launches, tethered balloon displays, and night glow events to take place between Friday 8th to Sunday 10th September.

The event will feature many novelty balloons, including Simbaloo, Longleat’s resident lion; Adelaide the koala; the penguin trio; Wes the wolf and Dolly the sheep.

There will also be a debut for a new novelty balloon - a baby dragon!

New Icons of the Sky Flies Into Longleat

longleat safari park balloon festival

Two centuries after a pioneering hot air balloon flight landed at Longleat, the historic Wiltshire estate is launching a spectacular new aerial event, Icons of the Sky from 13th to 15th September.

Celebrating not only hot air balloons but other legendary forms of flight, the inaugural event will also feature warbirds – a Spitfire and Tiger Moths, plus high energy aerobatics, helicopter displays, wing walkers and much more.

The 2024 air festival from 13-15 September boasts formation flying, pyrotechnics in the air as well as the iconic night glow and a firework finale has been introduced.

The Longleat collections team discovered a newspaper cutting which shows in 1824, pioneering balloonist George Graham – who was married to Margaret, Britain’s first female balloonist – landed a balloon in Longleat after taking off from Sydney Gardens in Bath.

He was greeted by the young sons of the 2nd Marquess of Bath at the time but turned down refreshments to meet a welcoming committee in neighbouring Frome.

Longleat is now home to the 2nd Marquess great, great, great, great grandson, the 8th Marquess and his family and this year’s festival pays homage to the history of flight.

Scott Ashman, Longleat’s Head of Operations, said: “Our 2024 event will be an air festival like Longleat has never seen before.

“There are many new attractions, and we are looking forward to welcoming them all but of note will be the presence of the warbirds.

“The legendary Spitfire and Tiger Moths will fly over the estate each day which will be an incredible sight to behold; for many people it will be the first time they have had the opportunity to see them fly.

“In addition, the festival will feature high energy acrobatics, wing walkers, pyrotechnic air displays as well as our tethered morning display of balloons and traditional night glow when the different shapes appear to be dancing to the music,” he added.

Among the tethered balloons will be family favourites Rupert the Bear, Thomas the Tank Engine, Elii the Elephant, Michelin Man and two dogs Buster and Bella, making their first appearance at Longleat.

In addition, dozens of balloons are expected to take to the air at the twice daily flights – weather permitting.

“All of this is on top of our usual fabulous entertainment for all the family as tickets also include our drive though Safari Park, walk through Animal Adventure, Longleat railway and boat ride on the lake,” said Scott.

The estate will open from 7am for Icons of the Sky and timings, which are subject to change due to weather conditions, are:

  • 07:15 - 09:00 Mass Ascent
  • 09:15 - 10:15 Model Balloon Display
  • 10:30 - 14:00 Tethering & Meet the Teams
  • 14:30 - 16:45 Air Display
  • 17:00 - 19:00 Mass Ascent
  • 19:45 - 20:00 Pyrotechnic Air Display
  • 20:00 - 20:20 Night Glow
  • 20:25 - 20:30 Firework Finale

All you need to know as Longleat Sky Safari hot air balloon festival returns

Thousands of visitors will descend on Longleat on Saturday (September 9) for the stately home’s annual Sky Safari event.

More than 100 hot air balloons of all shapes and sizes will be taking part in the UK’s biggest annual hot air balloon event at the Wiltshire estate.

Led by Longleat’s very own lion-shaped balloon, the festival will also feature balloons depicting some of the estate’s safari park favourites taking to the skies.

A Longleat spokesperson said: “Special animal shapes you’ll see reimagined as stunning hot air balloons include a koala, wolf, parrot and owl.”

Some of the balloons which took to the skies over Longleat on Friday morning included Iggy the Purple Baby Dragon, the Wallace & Gromit Moon Rocket, Dolly the Sheep, and The Penguin Family Puddles, Splash and Tall Steve.

Established in 2016, Sky Safari is being supported by Bristol-based Exclusive Ballooning and is one of Europe’s largest annual hot air balloon events.

Sky Safari attracts professional pilots and balloon crews from around the world as far afield as Alaska, to take part in the internationally-accredited competition.

All this weekend, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views, and photo opportunities, as over 100 balloons take off in mass launches as well as tethered displays against the unique backdrop of Longleat House.

Early birds can catch the stunning sunrise balloon launches from 7am and throughout the day there will be chances to enjoy close up views of the tethered balloons followed by a second scheduled mass launch at 5pm.

When the late summer sun goes down, it gets even more magical as the balloons fire up their burners for a stunning world class night glow, choreographed to a bespoke produced soundtrack.

Tickets for Saturday are already sold out but there are still some available for Sunday, September 10.

The schedule is:

  • 7am – morning mass launch
  • 10.30am - tethered hot air balloon displays
  • 11.30am – model ballooning
  • 2.30pm – tethered hot air balloon displays
  • 4.45pm onwards – fire performances begin
  • 5pm – evening launch
  • 8pm - night glow

Fire performances are at 4.45pm, 5.45pm, 6.30pm and 7.10pm; Jamba de Samba performances are at 5pm, 6pm and 7.25pm.

Visitors should be aware that hot air ballooning is weather-dependent, and the organisers may have to adjust the timings to allow for the prevailing weather conditions.

"In adverse conditions, some launches and displays may have to be postponed or cancelled," they said.

The three-day event from September 8-10 is in addition to the Longleat Safari Park’s usual attractions.

The Exclusive Cup - #SkySafari

Welcome to The Exclusive Cup, SkySafari

Almost 250 hot air balloons from all corners of the world ascended from Longleat in September 2019, making Sky Safari Europe’s largest annual hot air balloon event!

Due to Covid-19 and the restrictions in place we took the difficult but appropriate decision to postpone The Exclusive Cup for 2020, replacing the event with a drive-in night glow, the first of its kind in the UK.

In 2021, we returned to Longleat with a series of spectacular night glows, with over 100 teams participating in our signature choreographed glows over three nights.

In 2022, Exclusive Ballooning returned with a full Sky Safari event, featuring two bespoke atmospheric night-glows crafted in memoriam of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

Over 120 balloons returned to Sky Safari in 2023, featuring mass ascents, competition flights and spectacular night glows.

Plans are underway for the next Sky Safari event, with details to be announced in due course.

Evening mass launch and Night Glow cancelled

SKY SAFARI WEATHER UPDATE - Friday 9th September, 2.30pm Due to strong gusts taking place over the afternoon and heavy rain forecast until 10pm this evening, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this evening's mass launch and Night Glow. — Longleat (@Longleat) September 9, 2022

Afternoon launch 'unlikely to go ahead'

The park announced in a statement that it was 'unlikely' that today's (Friday September 9) afternoon mass launch would be able to go ahead due to "strong wind and rain forecasts". They said:

At present, it looks unlikely that the afternoon mass launch will be able to go ahead due to strong wind and rain forecasts. We will continue to keep you updated on this evening’s Night Glow. We'll keep our fingers crossed for better ballooning conditions, but please keep an eye out for our next weather update on social media this afternoon.

Top tips for the weekend

Longleat have handily listed some of their top tips for the weekend:

  • Stay tuned for weather updates posted on social media throughout the weekend! Sky Safari is hugely popular so we highly recommend you book your tickets in advance: https://bit.ly/2Lcodk r
  • There is still Annual Pass Restricted Day Ticket availability for Saturday 10th September and we've also added more Annual Pass availability for the 9th and 11th September. Head to the Annual Pass Zone to book: https://bit.ly/2caadXo
  • We’ll have tethered balloon displays, mass launches and a night glow each day. If you'd like to take a look at our full ballooning schedule, you can do so here: https://bit.ly/3x7WGcH
  • All hot air balloon flying is weather dependent, which means that the hot air balloons will be unable to take to the sky in windy or wet conditions. The good news is that there is still plenty of attractions to keep you occupied if some balloon activity can't go ahead as planned.
  • For those who want to come to the park to see the balloons when it's a bit quieter, you can come along to our morning mass ascents which take place daily at 7am. They are quite often the best flying conditions and most spectacular. These are included with your Day Ticket or Annual Passes (Annual Passes excl. 10th September).
  • There will be food and drink concessions up by the main viewing area, as well as additional toilet facilities.
  • And last but not least, don't forget to use #SkySafari so we can find all your fantastic photo
