Baker delivers Legends Tour win at JCB Championship
Golf in uae, golf in uae world.
Wins for the second time this season as tournament reduced to 36 holes due to weather
Peter Baker has won his second Legends Tour event of the season by defeating a world class line-up of major winners at JCB Golf and Country Club, Uttoxeter, England.
Baker was the 36-hole leader and he became champion without hitting another shot after the final round was unfortunately cancelled, with heavy rain from Storm Antoni rendering the course unplayable.
Winning score of two rounds of 69 for a -6 total and a one-stroke victory for the the 55-year-old who clinches his second trophy of the season after he won the Irish Legends by seven shots.
“It’s incredible”
“It’s amazing,” said Baker. “I thought we were going to play, and I had to make myself think we were going to play, even though the weather’s been against us. It’s incredible. It’s not one of those things that usually happens to you – it’s called off and you win.
“The greens were really quick and in brilliant condition. You had to get the pace right. It was difficult for all of us, but I managed to get that pace right many times and I putted lovely and hit some really nice iron shots.”
Three-time major winner Vijay Singh came second on -5. South African Ernie Els held the lead for much of day two after an eagle on the third and back-to-back birdies on six and seven, but the South African dropped three shots on the back nine to finish tied third alongside Steven Alker on -4.
Jeev Milkha Singh solo fifth
Dubai-based Jeev Milkha Singh was left to rue a poor finish on the final hole as his double bogey on 18 resulted in a 72 and solo fifth on -3.
Defending champion and last week’s Senior Open winner Alex Čejka finished alongside 2002 Ryder Cup player Niclas Fast in tied sixth, and tournament host Darren Clarke and eight-time DP World Tour number one Colin Montgomerie were part of an eight-player tie for eigth on one under.
The win for Baker is his second trophy of 2023, taking him to second in the MCB Road to Mauritius, the Legends Tour’s season-long ranking.
The next event is The Legends Tour Trophy hosted by Simon Khan at Hanbury Manor Marriot Hotel and Country Club, England, on August 12th-14th.

LEGENDS TOUR ANNOUNCES THE JCB CHAMPIONSHIP FOR 2022
JCB’s Golf and Country Club is set to realise its vision as a major international tour destination when The JCB Championship takes place on the Legends Tour International Schedule from July 29-31, 2022.
JCB’s Golf and Country Club is set to realise its vision as a major international tour destination when The JCB Championship takes place on the Legends Tour International Schedule from July 29-31, 2022. Some of the biggest names in the sport will descend on the course for a star-studded competition at the prestigious Staffordshire club - the brainchild of JCB Chairman Lord Bamford.
The event will take place in the week after The Senior Open at Gleneagles and will offer a prize fund of €600,000. The JCB Championship will be hosted by Ryder Cup and European Tour legend Darren Clarke and profits will be donated to JCB’s NSPCC Platinum Jubilee Appeal.
When JCB set out to create a world class golf and country club, it was always our ambition to attract an international tour event, so it really is wonderful news that the course has been selected to host such a prominent competition.
Lord Bamford | JCB Chairman
Graeme Macdonald, Chief Executive Officer of JCB, added: “The JCB Golf and Country Club has already successfully hosted the Rose Ladies Series tournament and our inclusion in the Legends Tour’s international schedule really is the next step in fully realising our aspirations for the course. We are thrilled by the news.” Darren Clarke said: “I’m extremely proud to be hosting The JCB Championship. Knowing JCB as a company and having been fortunate enough to visit JCB’s Golf and Country Club, you can be certain that this will be a fantastic event and I’m very much looking forward to it.” Spanning 240 acres of rolling countryside, the JCB Golf and Country Club has been hailed as a masterpiece in contemporary course design since it opened in 2018. It was designed and built using industry-leading technology to create aesthetically appealing tee shots, wide, sweeping fairways and interesting, yet fun, green complexes. Phil Harrison, Chief Executive of the Legends Tour, said: “We are thrilled to have secured the first international event to be held at JCB Golf and Country Club. It is truly a world-class venue, and this is an opportunity for us to help showcase it to the world. “We are thankful to the venue, as well as Chubby Chandler and International Sports Management (ISM), for their help in bringing this event to fruition and we are looking forward to working alongside them in the coming months.” ISM has a rich history of promoting tournaments and past events include the British Masters, Turkish Airlines Open and the Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Open. ISM Chief Executive Officer Chubby Chandler said: “As a member of The JCB Golf and Country Club I’m very proud that ISM is involved in what is sure to be a memorable tournament. Darren is also excited to be involved and is sure to bring a few friends to the JCB Championship with him. We have some great plans for the tournament and, befitting JCB and its incredible venue, we’re looking forward to helping produce something unique and very special.” The JCB Championship will take place from July 29-31, 2022. The full 2022 Legends Tour International Schedule will be revealed later this year.

MAJOR COUP FOR JCB GOLF COURSE AS LEGENDS TOUR RETURNS IN 2023
A major tour event is set to make a welcome return to the prestigious JCB Golf and Country Club after the resounding success of its inaugural visit.
The first JCB Championship was staged at the Club last year as part of the Legends Tour’s international schedule, and some of the best-known names in golf competed for £600,000 in prize money. Today organisers confirmed that the event would be returning to the Rocester course in 2023 with a prize fund of £750,000 - the largest on the Legends Tour schedule outside of the Senior Open Championship. The JCB Championship is due to place from August 3rd to 5th 2023. 2022 Senior Open Champion Darren Clarke will once again host the event, with the Club bidding to attract a star-studded field. Among other big names already signed up to play are Alex Cejka, who won the 2022 Championship, Retief Goosen, Thongchai Jaidee, John Daly and Colin Montgomerie.
We are thrilled to be hosting the JCB Championship for the second consecutive year. Last year’s event was a resounding success and with Darren Clarke hosting the occasion again, we aim to make the 2023 JCB Championship even bigger and better.
Graeme Macdonald | CEO of JCB
Legends Tour Chief Executive Officer Phil Harrison said: “We are delighted to be returning to the JCB Golf & Country Club in 2023. The JCB Championship will undoubtedly attract some of the game’s biggest stars including Tour winners, Major winners, Ryder Cup stars and Hall of Famers.” Darren Clarke said: “I was extremely proud to host The JCB Championship last year for what was a truly fantastic event. The JCB Golf & Country Club is a great venue, and we had such a great field in 2022 with so many former Major champions and legends of the game taking part. I am really looking forward to returning in 2023 as host.” More than 8,000 spectators attended the JCB Championship over three days, enjoying the action on a stunning course which is set in some of Staffordshire’s most beautiful countryside. The prestigious Staffordshire club – the brainchild of JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford – has also successfully been a host venue for the Rose Ladies Series in both 2020 and 2021.

Peter Baker claimed a one-shot victory over Vijay Singh after a rain-soaked JCB Championship saw its final round abandoned.
Baker held the 36-hole lead on -6 going into the final round after back-to-back three-under-par rounds of 69. However, due to heavy rain overnight and throughout the early morning, the tournament - held at the JCB Golf & Country Club in Derbyshire, England – was unable to get underway on the final day.

With play abandoned, the 55-year-old claimed victory and his second win in 2023 after his seven-shot triumph at the Irish Legends in June.
Saturday’s round would have presented exciting viewing with a host of high-profile names in the chasing pack behind the Englishman. Three-time Major champion, Singh was just one shot back after his second-round 68, with Ernie Els and last year’s PGA Tour Champions Charles Schwab Cup winner, Steven Alker, sat a further shot back on -4.
Newly-crowned Senior Open champion, Alex Cejka, may have fancied his chances in difficult conditions, had play commenced, after his battling victory in high winds at Royal Porthcawl last month but, ultimately, he finished in T6 after consecutive rounds of 71.
2022 Senior Open champion, Darren Clarke, and Collin Montgomerie were notable names amongst a group of players that finished at -1 for the tournament and in a tie for eighth.
The win for Baker marks his third European Senior Tour win. The 1993 Ryder Cupper also won three times on the Challenge Tour and European Tour.
