Recent tour reviews

1986, 1988, 2005, 2011, 2019. These are the years I seen the mighty Judas Priest and they continue to rock after all these years. They have changed their set list every time I seen them and glad I made it to the concert(s). Rob Halford is still hitting those high notes which is amazing since is getting up there in years. This is the first time not seeing Glenn Tipton in the band. His Parkinson's disease has really affected his playing, as he didn't come out for the encore songs.

If you are trying to decide to go at the last minute to see JP, just go. Don't procrastinate. Go, now. Get your ticket. Enjoy the show.

Halford and crew delivered the goods. New set list for 2019 including awesome deep cuts like Take These Chains and a few brand new cuts from Firepower - the greatest metal album since the 80s (and better than most of those)! This is a MUST SEE concert for any true metal fan. Incredible show! Band should have moved around the stage a little more - Rob sure did. Sure wish Glenn could have come out to say Hi even if he can’t play. These guys are true legends. Great show. Bring the next generation with you. @gilbilly88

Judas Priest never fails to impress and entertain. This was my 25th Priest concert and this one, like all the ones before, blew me away. I am very sorry I didn't get to see Glenn Tipton perform, but Andy Sneap filled in just nicely, like he has been on stage with them since the beginning. Rob.. what can I say about Rob that true fans don't already know? The man still has it! Such an exquisite and strong voice.. gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. No one, NO ONE will ever come close to outperforming, outplaying, out-singing, and outscreaming Judas Priest and THE METAL GOD . I look forward to my 26th show. Metal GODS! They are, after all...

Judas Priest 1984 to 2024 Setlist Comparison: 40 Years of Steel

"No holograms, no troupes of dancers, just a giant light-up trident descending from the ceiling": Judas Priest keep it simple on a triumphant first night of the Invincible Shield tour

A show 160 years in the making: judas priest, saxon and uriah heap take to the stage in glasgow.

Judas Priest onstage in Glasgow

You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.

There are only two kinds of music that matter tonight: Heavy and Metal. Three British bands, with a total of 160 years on the clock between them, have packed out the 12,000-seater OVO Hydro. Here, the chaos of the world is kept outside, this giant concrete and glass colosseum on the banks of the Clyde surrounded by an invisible forcefield. Or maybe an invincible shield.

This is the first night of the world tour in support of Judas Priest ’s 19th album, Invincible Shield (yeah, we went there). It’s a screaming demon of a record that keeps up the hot streak which began with 2014’s rocket-fuelled Redeemer Of Souls and continued through 2018’s pulverising Firepower . Do Priest – 55 years and counting in the game themselves – have the energy to pull it off? Oh yes, they definitely do.

We’ll get to that, but first the undercard. Openers Uriah Heep have been doing this as long as Priest, doughty footsoldiers on heavy metal’s long and unending route march. They rattle through a set so short it’s a wonder they bothered to pull themselves away from the telly, but Gypsy and Easy Livin’ sound as exhilarating now as they did when double denim and luxuriant moustaches were all the rage first time around.

Saxon are the young bucks on tonight’s bill by comparison, even if Biff Byford increasingly resembles an old oak, topped with silver and more rooted to the spot than he used to be. We get four songs from their latest album, Hell, Fire And Damnation , which is a touch on the generous side (though There’s Something In Roswell is way better than its crackpot title suggests). But everyone’s here for the classics, and they know it: Motorcycle Man , And The Bands Played On , Dallas 1pm , Wheels Of Steel and Princess Of The Night, still the greatest song about a steam train ever written. “This is what it’s fucking all about,” booms Biff before a euphoric Denim And Leather . He’s not wrong.

There’s a reason Priest called their new album what they did, given the rough time of it they’ve had in the last few years. Talismanic guitarist Glenn Tipton’s Parkinson’s diagnosis and subsequent retirement, recent-ish recruit Richie Faulkner’s near-fatal onstage heart attack , Rob Halford’s recovery from prostate cancer – if there is a God, it looks like he’s not much of a Judas Priest fan. Yet here they are, leather-clad and studded up, striding onto the OVO stage to a fanfare worthy of a Queen (or at least Queen), as youthful in spirit, if not in body, as they‘ve ever been.

Invincible Shield is a top-tier Priest album, and one that doesn’t sound too far away from the ones they used to make, so few here begrudge them opening with the adrenalised assault of recent single Panic Attack . Even those who have resolutely refused to listen to anything after Painkiller will be pacified by Rapid Fire , despatched in quick succession. Halford manages to lose his way a little in the tongue-tangling wordplay – come on, he’s only been singing it for 44 years – but at least he nails ‘desolisating’, which is the important bit. When exactly did heavy metal bands stop making up their own words anyway?

Judas Priest - Intro/Panic Attack Live At Glasgow Hydro 11/03/2024 - YouTube

Priest haven’t played UK arenas for decades, and it’s easy to forget just how boomingly heavy they sound. Not least bassist Ian Hill, the rock on which Priest have been built for the last 50-odd years. Does it matter that his great thwacking bass is the loudest thing in the mix? No, it does not. There’s some milksop with an acoustic guitar playing across town if it’s too loud for you.

Halford himself is obscenely sprightly tonight, which is to say way more agile than any 72-year old wrapped in a layer of leather, rivet-work and, sporadically, a spangly silver coat has a right to be. Vocally, he‘s on fire – the high notes are hit precisely when they should be, which, in the case of Screaming For Vengeance , is pretty much from start to finish. He even tosses in what sounds like a death growl during the immortal Metal Gods .

By modern standards, the stage set is relatively restrained yet undeniably effective. Banks of giant screens at the back of the stage project a retina-roasting array of colours and images – a dirty and scuffed Union Jack during Breaking The Law , footage from the old silent horror movie Nosferatu during Love Bites , vintage footage of the absent Tipton during a stellar Victim Of Changes , his hair flowing and his red patent leather strides positively creaking with intent. Beyond that, there’s not much - no second stage, no holograms, no troupes of dancers, just a giant light-up trident that periodically descends from the ceiling. But sometimes a giant light-up trident is all you need.

The setlist is as perfectly balanced as can be expected from a band with as deep a catalogue as Priest. There are new songs ( Lightning Strike , Panic Attack , Trial By Fire and Invincible Shield itself all get a run out, the first ever for the latter three). There are old songs ( You Got Another Thing Coming , Turbo , Green Manalishi ). There are even a couple of deep-ish cuts in the form of Saints In Hell and Love Bites .

The wrap it up, naturally, with a triumphant Hell Bent For Leather – sung by Halford on his Harley, of course – and Livin’ After Midnight . “We hit Glasgow about 1am,”  Rob sings on the latter – optimistic, maybe, but 12,000-odd people are right there partying with him in their heads. “We’ll be back,” he says when it’s finished. Time may march on, but only a fool would bet against that.

Judas Priest's Invincible Shield tour continues at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on Wednesday evening (March 13). For full dates and tickets, visit the Judas Priest website .

Rob Halford appears on the cover of the new issue of Metal Hammer (with some kittens), while Halford and Richie Faulkner are interviewed about the making of Invincible Shield in the new issue of Classic Rock .

Judas Priest 1984 to 2024 Set List Comparison: 40 Years of Steel

Judas Priest kicked off the North American leg of their Invincible Shield tour on Thursday at Wallingford, Connecticut’s Oakdale Theatre, delivering a blend of mega-hits, deep cuts and new songs off their 19th album.

You can see the set list below.

The Invincible Shield tour comes shortly after Judas Priest’s 50 Heavy Metal Years tour , proof of their status as a pillar of the genre. Several songs in the band’s current set lists have been mainstays for decades, a testament to their enduring popularity. In fact, a look at Priest’s set list from exactly 40 years ago — when the band was at its commercial peak — shows several early-career classics that are still whipping audiences into a frenzy today.

On the other hand, Judas Priest has never been a band to phone in identical set lists on subsequent tours, nor have they allowed themselves to be relegated to “nostalgia act” status. Since their mid-’80s heyday, they’ve released several beloved albums and have updated their set lists accordingly, while also incorporating a variety of deep cuts and spotlighting their latest releases on the road.

Read on to see how Judas Priest’s April 2024 set list stacks up against their April 1984 set list.

What Are the Biggest Differences Between 1984 and 2024?

Judas Priest was in the midst of their sprawling Metal Conqueror tour in support of Defenders of the Faith when they hit Memphis, Tennessee’s Mid-South Coliseum on April 18, 1984. They dedicated nearly half of their 20-song set to the album, which had hit shelves three months earlier. The only song Priest didn’t play off the 10-track LP was “Eat Me Alive.”

In comparison, the band’s April 18, 2024 show only featured three songs from the band’s most recent album: “Invincible Shield,” “Crown of Horns” and “Panic Attack.” That’s par for the course for most bands these days, particularly legacy acts with extensive catalogs and plenty of hits and fan favorites.

Which Songs Have Stayed the Same?

Judas Priest’s April 2024 set shared eight songs in common with their April 1984 set. British Steel hits “Breaking the Law” and “Living After Midnight” were present at both, as were Screaming for Vengeance classics “Electric Eye” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’.” The Metal Gods also retained “Hell Bent for Leather” and the Sad Wings of Destiny epic “Victim of Changes,” as well as their adrenalized cover of Fleetwood Mac ‘s “The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown).” The final — and arguably least expected — carryover from their 1984 set was the Defenders of the Faith single “Love Bites.”

Which Judas Priest Songs Have Become Set List Staples Since 1984?

One of the most notable differences between Judas Priest’s 1984 set list and their 2024 set list is the addition of several hits written in the interim. They’ve routinely played the synth-driven “ Turbo Lover ” since releasing it in 1986, along with various songs off 1990’s career-revitalizing Painkiller . (This time, the title track made the cut.) Priest also kept “Lightning Strike,” the lead single off 2018’s Firepower . Although the album isn’t that old yet, it’s been received well enough by fans and critics that it’s safe to assume several of its tracks have earned “modern classic” status and will be in Judas Priest’s set lists for years to come.

Best Deep Cuts From Judas Priest’s 2024 Shows

Despite amassing a slew of hits over the past several decades, Judas Priest still makes room for some lesser-known gems in their set lists. Their Wallingford show featured the fairly rare “Love Bites,” which, prior to 2024, hadn’t appeared since 2015 (and prior to 2014, they hadn’t played it since 1986). The band has also unearthed British Steel cut “You Don’t Have to Be Old to Be Wise” this year for the first time since 2010, along with Stained Class rarity “Saints in Hell,” which didn’t receive its live debut until 2018.

After more than a half-century, Judas Priest clearly still finds pleasure in shaking up their set lists — ensuring that as long as they stay on the road, their fans will be there with voices raised and devil horns held high.

See Front-Row Video Of JUDAS PRIEST's Entire Reading, Pennsylvania Concert

Front-row fan-filmed video of JUDAS PRIEST 's entire April 21 concert at Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania during the 2024 "Invincible Shield" U.S. tour can be seen below.

PRIEST 's 18-song setlist included three songs from the band's latest album, "Invincible Shield" : the title track, "Panic Attack" and "Crown Of Horns" .

The band's setlist was as follows:

01. Panic Attack 02. You've Got Another Thing Comin' 03. Rapid Fire 04. Breaking The Law 05. Lightning Strike 06. Love Bites 07. Devil's Child 08. Saints In Hell 09. Crown Of Horns 10. Sinner 11. Turbo Lover 12. Invincible Shield 13. Victim Of Changes 14. The Green Manalishi (With The Two Prong Crown) (FLEETWOOD MAC cover) 15. Painkiller

16. The Hellion / Electric Eye 17. Hell Bent For Leather 18. Living After Midnight

JUDAS PRIEST kicked off the U.S. leg of the "Invincible Shield" world tour on April 18 at Toyota Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, Connecticut.

In a recent appearance on The Break Down With Nath & Johnny podcast , JUDAS PRIEST bassist Ian Hill was asked who in the band has the final say when it comes to picking a setlist for the PRIEST live shows. He responded: "Well, it is probably Rob [ Halford , PRIEST singer], really. But then again, we've got a whole spectrum now. You've got the younger element with Richie [ Faulkner , PRIEST guitarist]. He's the same age as my eldest son. And then comes Scott [ Travis , PRIEST drummer] and you've got Glenn [ Tipton , PRIEST guitarist], of course. He can't do it anymore [due to his battle with Parkinson's disease]. [But] he's still sharp as a pin between his ears. Then Andy [ Sneap , PRIEST touring guitarist] and Rob and myself. So you've got a full spectrum there of ages. So everybody has their own favorites and their own types of JUDAS PRIEST song. We all sort of [go], 'Yeah, like that. No, don't like that one.' And then we'll go. If someone's adamant that they really don't wanna do something, well, you don't wanna do something, and vice versa — if someone really wants to do a particular track, you do it. Like I say, you've got the ring-fence tracks there that you've gotta do — the 'Breaking The Law' s and the 'Living After Midnight' s and things like that, that you have to do. It's what brings people to the shows, basically. And then you've got your other sort of classic PRIEST songs, which is a little bit easier because you can swap and change those between — do a month maybe using one song, change it to another one of a similar kind. And then try to get some new stuff in there — three, maybe four maximum is about as much as you can get at any one time. I'm sure there'll be more than that, that we'll go through. And just swap and change as we go."

Asked if there are any songs that he can think of straight off the top of his head, in the PRIEST back catalog that he really loves to play live but never has, Ian said: "Ah, there's one that we have played live that we haven't played for a while and that's 'Dissident Aggressor' . I still say that's probably my all-time favorite song. It's just so raw — it's just pure rock, really. It's one of those songs that, even in the studio, I can remember it being — it's two guitars, bass, drums and vocals. And I think there might be one extra guitar on there through the lead break. Other than that, it's totally raw. It's exactly as it would be on stage. And I love that song, apart from it being a great song. And there's always other things. We've never really done 'Before The Dawn' — from the other point of view, the other end of the spectrum, if there's a quiet part in [the show]. These days people tend to prefer the more upbeat stuff rather than the quieter pieces. But that would be cool to do as well. It's only about two and a half, three minutes long anyway, so it wouldn't take much time. But there's loads in there — there's loads of them. 'Sinner' we haven't done, so it'd be great to do that again. We haven't done that for a while. But we'll see."

In a separate interview with Metal Pilgrim , Halford spoke about the setlist for the European leg of PRIEST 's tour with SAXON and URIAH HEEP . He said: "We've had this conversation before as far as trying to put the setlist together. And after 19 studio albums, it's, like, 'Oh my God. Where do we go?' If we didn't play 'Breaking The Law' , there'd be a riot. If we didn't play 'Painkiller' , there'd be a riot. There are certain songs that you are indebted to your fans to play, because they're part of the fabric of who you are as a band. Without naming names, there are certain bands where you know you wanna hear that song when you go to a show. So there's a portion of the setlist that already writes itself. Having said that, yeah, we are gonna go quite deep, and we found some songs from previous albums that we're gonna work with and we're gonna bring out. So there'll probably be at least two or three deep cuts on this setlist."

Rob continued: "At any given moment, we've got 60 to 70 songs we can play — at any given moment. And then we're gonna add more into the mix. It's fun to see the texts and the e-mails flying through: 'Well, I'll give you this one if you give me that one.' 'Cause you've gotta find a balance. When a band plays on stage, every single bandmember has to agree on the set list. There's no place for, 'Oh, dude, I've gotta play this one.' There's no place for that. You've all gotta be believing in that particular song as you go through the show. And it's gonna be fantastic. And this is gonna be a really eventful tour as we're about to kick off in Europe, with our friends SAXON and URIAH HEEP ."

Hill is the sole remaining original member of PRIEST , which formed in 1969. Halford joined the group in 1973 and Tipton signed on in 1974. Rob left PRIEST in the early 1990s to form his own band, then came back to PRIEST in 2003. Original guitarist K.K. Downing parted ways with the band in 2011, and was replaced by Faulkner .

"Invincible Shield" entered the U.K. chart at No. 2, just behind Ariana Grande 's "Eternal Sunshine" .

Prior to "Invincible Shield" 's arrival, PRIEST 's highest U.K. chart achievement was with 1980's "British Steel" , which reached No. 4.

PRIEST 's 2018 album "Firepower" entered the chart at No. 5.

"Invincible Shield" is JUDAS PRIEST 's fifth Top 10 album, after the aforementioned "British Steel" and "Firepower" , as well as 2014's "Redeemer Of Souls" (No. 6) and the 1979 live album "Unleashed In The East" (No. 10).

"Invincible Shield" landed at No. 1 in Germany, Finland, Sweden and Switzerland, as well as No. 5 in France, No. 8 in Italy and No. 16 in Australia.
