Jennifer Odessa Nettles (born September 12, 1974) is an American country music singer-songwriter and actress. She is known primarily for her role as lead vocalist of the duo Sugarland alongside Kristian Bush. Before Sugarland’s inception, she also fronted Atlanta-based bands called Soul Miner’s Daughter and Jennifer Nettles Band. She also charted as a duet partner on the country version of rock band Bon Jovi’s 2006 single “Who Says You Can’t Go Home”, a Number One hit on the Billboard country charts.

Saw Jennifer Nettles in concert on June3, 2016 at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA. Brandy Clark opened for her. Once she warmed up and loosened up she was really good. Will be purchasing her new album when it comes out soon. Brandy even signed stuff at intermission for fans.

When Jennifer came out on stage, the energy changed. The room came alive as she commanded the stage. She did a little from the days of Sugarland, a little from her first solo album - That Girl, a few from her current album - Playing With Fire, and she did a couple cover songs. Jennifer puts her heart and soul into her performance. I think she has one of the best voices in Country Music today. She sounded amazing, and she was very animated. She also showed us her piano and guitar skills. She was a really good sport when fans rushed to the stage to try to get a picture with her. She squatted down and allowed them to take selfies with her. She is a class act. I would go back and see her again and again.

A rock n roll mum! The best kind of mum you could want. I dont know myself if she is a mother, but aged 40 and America's sweetheart with long curls and an acoustic guitar, Jennifer Nettles would make the coolest, sexiest mum in the world.

A soulful, almost gospel type voice. Like she's singing to the heavens in pray for a miracle. Her music is defined as country rock, but there are strong feelings and sounds of gospel, Christian rock vibes. But Jennifer is a true performer. She's widely appreciated across all fields of music. She's even performed with pop sensation Rhianna, so if Rhianna was happy to sing next to her in front of million people and cameras then Jennifer is a high profile executioner of live performing.

The opening act was very good. However Sugarland simply rocked! Best show I have been to in a long time! Jennifer can really belt out the tunes, be they Sugarland tunes or not!! All I can say is WOW!!

She had enough energy throughout the show. She should be a headliner next year.

Jennifer Nettles was born on September 12, 1974, in Douglas, Georgia, USA. Graduating from Douglas High School in 1992, she then attended Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, where she majored in Spanish and Anthropology.

Nettles married Todd Van Sickle in 1998, but the couple divorced in 2007. Nettles began dating Justin Miller in 2008 and the couple got engaged in 2011. They married on November 26, 2011, in a small ceremony at Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee. November 2012, Nettles and her husband welcomed their first child.

Musical Beginnings

Nettles always loved singing as a child. She began performing in church, and in community theater. Nettles was also a member of the Clovers & Company performing arts group. Nettles later attended Agnes Scott College, where she majored in Spanish and anthropology. It was during her time at Agnes Scott that Nettles met Kristian Bush. The two began playing music together and eventually formed Sugarland. Sugarland’s follow-up album, Enjoy the Ride, was released in 2006. It featured the hit singles “Want To” and “Everyday America.” The Sugarland was the first Grammy Award nomination for the Best New Artist category.

Sugarland’s next album, titled Love on the Inside, was released in 2008. It included the hit singles “All I Want to Do” and “Already Gone.” The album was certified 2× Platinum by the RIAA. Sugarland went on hiatus in 2012 but announced that they would be reuniting in 2017.

Solo Career

In 2014, Nettles released her debut solo album, That Girl. The album peaked at number 5 on the Billboard 200 and received positive reviews from critics. The lead single, “That Girl,” peaked at number 24 on the Country Airplay chart. Nettles’ second solo album, Playing with Fire, was released in 2016. The album debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200 and received positive reviews from critics. In 2016, Nettles released her third solo album, To Celebrate Christmas. The album peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Holiday Albums chart and received positive reviews from critics. Always Like New, Nettles’ fourth solo album, was released in 2021. The album was produced by Nettles and has a more country-pop sound than her previous albums. The first single from the album, “I Can Do Hard Things”, peaked at No. 10 on the Country Airplay chart.

Sugarland Announce 2024 Take Me Home Tour With Little Big Town

Sugarland will reunite and it the road this year with Little Big Town on their newly-announced 2024 Take Me Home Tour.

The duo are making a big return to country music this year and updated fans on their tour plans just before they prepared to perform on the CMT Music Awards on Sunday (April 7).

Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush have not released new music, nor toured since their last album, Bigger, arrived in 2017.

The Take Me Home Tour with LBT will kick off on October 24 in Greenville, S.C. They’ll tour across the U.S. with 18 stops before wrapping things up on Dec. 13 with a hometown show in Nashville, Tenn. The Castellows will provide direct support.

Fans are getting sneak peek of what’s to come on the road as the tourmates perform together at the CMT Music Awards.

It’s a CMT Awards reunion more than a decade in the making!

Little Big Town and Sugarland took the stage at the 2024 CMT Awards on Sunday for a stunning performance of Phil Collins ' "Take Me Home," marking their first time on the show’s stage together since 2008.

"Phil Collins is a legend and I hope he's smiling somewhere," LBT's Karen Fairchild, 54, told PEOPLE ahead of the performance. Added Kimberly Schlapman , 54, "I hope he likes it!"

Ahead of the award show, Little Big Town and Sugarland announced the Take Me Home Tour . The tour will kick off on Oct. 4 in Greenville, South Carolina, and conclude on Dec. 13 at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

"It's a wonderful feeling," Sugarland Kristian Bush, 54, told PEOPLE on the CMT Awards red carpet. "It's like coming home. It's people you know and a place that you feel comfortable doing something you love."

Added Jennifer Nettles , 49: "That's a beautiful thing. And we love them as friends. We've worked with them many years ago, and toured with them and they've toured with us, so it's a natural fit musically. Artistically, we understand each other very well, we all have similar influences and it's just beautiful to get to sing with each other."

At the Michael J. Fox Foundation’s  Country Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson's event  on April 2, Schlapman told PEOPLE that the performance was going to be "epic," with bandmate Phillip Sweet adding, "It was cool, getting back together and preparing for this moment."

Sweet, 50, also highlighted the "great energy" musically the duo has with the "Girl Crush" creators.

Little Big Town is comprised of Schlapman, Sweet, Fairchild and Jimi Westbrook, 52, while Sugarland is Nettles and Bush. The groups — who, combined, have a staggering 44 CMT nominations — last played at the award show together in 2008, when they joined forces with Jake Owen to sing “Life in a Northern Town.”

Little Big Town hosted the CMTs in 2018 and 2019, and also hold the record for most nominations for group video of the year, with 25 nods. They put out their most recent album, Mr. Sun, in 2022.

Sugarland, meanwhile, last played the CMTs together in 2011. Their most recent album, Bigger , came out in 2018.

Nettles was honored in 2020 with the show’s inaugural CMT Equal Play Award , which recognized her for her passionate advocacy and support of women in the music industry, LGBTQ+ community and other underrepresented groups.

The performance comes amid a star-studded lineup of performers, including Jelly Roll , Keith Urban , Lainey Wilson , Bailey Zimmerman , NEEDTOBREATHE with Jordan Davis , Sam Hunt , Trisha Yearwood , Cody Johnson , Old Dominion ft. For the group’s 25th anniversary, Little Big Town is pouring some sugar on it. Some Sugarland , actually, as the two country groups will be spending some quality time together later this year, in the wake of their joint performance Sunday night on the CMT Music Awards , where they hooked up to sing their newly arranged cover of Phil Collins ‘ 1985 smash “Take Me Home.”

There’s a throwback element to the new single and tour, as well as Sunday’s CMTs appearance: The two groups toured together in the late 2000s, and they sang a cover of the Dream Academy’s “Life in a Northern Town” (then joined by Jake Owen as well) on the 2008 show that at the time went under the name of the CMT Flameworthy Awards.

Backstage at Austin’s Moody Center during CMT Awards rehearsals, the four members of Little Big Town sat down to discuss with Variety their feelings about reuniting with their old vocal-harmony pals.

The tour plan preceded choosing which song to do together, says Karen Fairchild. “When we were on the road together years ago, we would really learn songs in the afternoon and then sing ’em,” she recalls. “Like, if we were in Memphis, we’d do ‘Walking in Memphis.’ So it was just something fun that we did on the road. So when this tour was gonna be announced and we were gonna get to do a song, then it was like, what do we do? And this song was Kristian Bush’s (of Sugarland) idea. and then we decided that we should get in the studio, because it sounded so good, and make it our own.”

There’s a more personal, if slightly indirect, connection as well. “We should tell you: Akil Thompson that plays in the band — he’s on keys, but he plays everything — his dad is Chester Thompson. Well, Chester, created the drum part on this. There are so many followers of drummers of just his part on that, on YouTube. So that’s why there’s so many drums out there on the CMTs stage — because Hubert (Payne, the group’s drummer) is channeling his inner Chester Thompson… with Akil sitting next to him. Akil showed us a picture of himself standing side-stage at a Phil Collins concert, watching his dad play on this song, so it’s kind of a full-circle moment for him.”

There is plenty of full circling happening now with the Little Big Town/Sugarland reconnection, which couldn’t have happened that many times in other recent years, since the latter duo’s Jennifer Nettles and Bush have been pursuing solo activities more than band work for the most part.

Says Fairchild, “We used to hang out with them because we went to see them open up for Brooks and Dunn, and we played cards one night, and then we just became fast friends.” Although LBT has been in existence as a unit slightly longer, Sugarland broke big in country first, so she tells a story of Nettles and Bush being helpful as they struggled.

“We ran into them again at a festival, back in the day when we were broke and we didn’t have any gear. The guys were locked down on wired packs and we really wanted to invest in some wireless packs — ad this seems really silly now, but back then that was an important thing; we didn’t have any freedom to move around the stage. Sugarland had just had their first big No. 1 or something. And they bought us wireless packs — gave ’em to us and said, ‘Just pay the kindness forward.'”

Says Westbook, “They were so sweet, and I know they felt like they were investing in in our future and helping us out, because they know what that means.”

“And then they bought us wardrobe cases!” adds Fairchild. “And then we gifted those wardrobe cases to Old Dominion, but they kept our names on there, so the guys had Kimberly, Karen, Phillip and Jimi on their wardrobe cases. They just gave those cases away — I don’t know who they gave the old ones to — but we’re trying to just keep the tradition going.”

As for their collaborating now… four-part harmony is hard enough. Isn’t six-part harmony going to be tougher?

They laugh. There isn’t quite so much of that, in actuality, as usually someone is singing a lead vocal that doesn’t have to fit in with the background parts. “The great thing about that is, there’s so many like ad libs in this song,” Schlapman says. “The rest of us keep the harmonies going while the ad libs also go along, so that’s where the six voices come in really handy.” But, as CMT Awards viewers say, all six members of the two groups got in at least a little lead-vocal time as the song went on.

The concluding night of the tour at Nashville’s big arena will mark the first time Little Big Town has headlined in Music City since a multi-night residency at the Ryman in 2017.

“With COVID, we didn’t plan on staying away that long,” says Fairchild. “But touring in the last few years, we did play there with George Strait, but yeah, we have not headlined anything until this Bridgestone show coming up. And that’s gonna be the last night of the tour. So it’s gonna be a party.” Chimes in Schlapman: “Katy-bar the door.”

After the CMTs, Fairchild was trying to figure out how to stick around Austin long enough to get in some vintage clothes-shopping, as is her habit when visiting the city. “This is one of my favorite places to shop, and I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to do that because they have us pretty busy. The vintage shopping here is phenomenal. I could stay and watch the eclipse, I guess, and shop.”

It’s suggested that she could shop in the dark, during the blackout. “She brought a headlamp,” quips Westbrook.

“Spelunking?” says Fairchild. “No, shopping.”
