8 Thoughtful Gift Ideas for Those Going Through IVF

December 3rd, 2020 | 6 min. read

fertility journey gifts

1 in 8 couples experience infertility, which likely means you or someone you know has gone through or is currently navigating this experience. It can be a short journey for some, long for others, but at some point, it's mentally and physically draining for almost everyone going through the process.

2020 Has Been Rough.

End it with something special..

The holidays can be especially difficult for those who are experiencing infertility - the extra focus on family can be hard if you're struggling to grow your own. Then take into account that we're in the middle of a pandemic where everyone is dealing with their own financial, professional, family, and added health issues. To put it simply: it's a lot.

If you're looking for some great stocking stuffers, items to add to your own list, or just looking for a reason to spoil yourself during this journey, these items are the answer to a more relaxing and motivational IVF journey.

Our dear friend, Karen Jefferies (aka Hilariously Infertile) is an infertility advocate and social influencer. Her mission is to make others who struggle with infertility laugh for a change. In her spare time outside killing the Instagram game and teaching her fourth grade class, she wrote a book titled, “Hilariously Infertile: One Woman's Inappropriate Quest to Help Women Laugh Through Infertility.” This is a comedic and self-deprecating look into the harsh, scary, and often sad world of infertility that Karen somehow turns fun. We highly recommend it!

Throughout my infertility journey, I've been through A LOT.

I've learned. I've shared. I've connected. I've laughed. I've cried. I've drank entire bottles of wine in one sitting.

I've been supported. I've been supportive. I've been hopeful. I've been defeated. I've been the 1 in 8 -and- 1 in 4.

In these past SIX YEARS, I've realized something. People just cannot understand infertility, no matter how hard they try, unless they've been through it. Well, I've been there. I AM there. And I'm here for you. Whether you need to vent or laugh or cry, I'm here. Send me a message. I get it. I've got you. -Michaéla (1 in 8)

10 Unique Gift Ideas For Someone Going Through IVF

From cute socks to med bags to handcrafted jewelry, these are some of the best IVF gifts to give to your loved ones who are undergoing IVF.

IVF stocking stuffer ideas

If you’re looking for Christmas gift ideas for someone going through IVF, sometimes the smallest gifts can make the biggest impact. Fill their stockings with these cute and affordable IVF gifts. Or, give these during other times of the year just to show you’re thinking about them.

1. IVF milestone cards and affirmation cards

Positive, beautiful, and truly thoughtful, IVF milestone cards can help the couple appreciate the hard work that goes into IVF while celebrating each milestone as it passes. Affirmation cards read in the morning can be a positive ritual they both embrace.

Etsy has many options for these. We particularly like the milestone cards from  Hello Treacle  and the beautiful watercolor affirmations from  Conceivable Designs .

2. Fun bandages

Injections aren’t enjoyable, but you can at least put a smile on her face with quirky and fun bandages.

Look for ones that feature her favorites, like  unicorns  or  Rosie the Riveter . You can also find  pretty ones with modern designs .

3. Fertility calendar stickers

Whether she’s keeping track in a wall calendar or journal,  fertility stickers  allow her to easily mark her appointments and milestones.

We love this set of stickers from  This Very Crafty Mama , which features over 180 stickers to track her cycle, egg retrieval dates, injections, and doctor appointments.

4. Pomegranate juice and Brazil nuts

They may be old wives tales, but many recommend pomegranate juice during IVF to thicken uterine lining. Others note that Brazil nuts contain lots of selenium, so eating them in moderation may promote healthy egg follicles.

While they likely won’t actually influence the chances of IVF success, if they enjoy these foods, there’s no reason they can’t have them in moderation.

5. IVF socks

Considered lucky on  egg retrieval  or transfer day, IVF socks may be the most useful gift you give her. Many feature fun sayings and quotes. Find them on  Etsy .

Gifts for IVF moms

Want to go beyond small gifts? These are some of the most thoughtful IVF gifts she’ll use during the process.

6. Heating pad

Heating pads after injections can help manage pain. Look for pads with comfy fabrics and flexible designs.

7. An IVF journal or planner

An IVF planner may be a place to mark important dates or it can be a journal that allows her to express her thoughts, worries, and hopes.

Some come pre-populated with prompts and questions to ask at the doctor’s office, like this option from  Piper Patch Creations .

8. Helpful gift cards

Some look down on gift cards, but not those undergoing IVF. Make it thoughtful by looking for gift cards that you know she’ll use and appreciate. These may include gift cards for:

  • Manicures and pedicures
  • Fertility massages
  • Acupuncture
  • Her preferred pharmacy
  • Fertility yoga classes

9. IVF medication bag

During IVF, she’ll need to have her medications easily accessible. IVF medication bags can be transferred from purse to purse or left on a nightstand.

Check out fertility-friendly  IVF bags on Etsy , especially from sellers like  Bearface Prints  or  Brides n Babes .

10. IVF jewelry

Some of the best IVF gifts are special necklaces and bracelets that inspire hope and beauty during the IVF process.

Many IVF patients wear fertility bracelets like this option from  August Bird Jewelry  or moonstone necklaces like the ones from  The Tangerine Poppy .

Make an IVF care package

Finally, one of the most thoughtful gift ideas for someone going through IVF is IVF care packages packed with the things you know she loves.

Include some of the smaller IVF gift ideas from above, as well as:

  • A thoughtful  IVF card
  • Some of her favorite foods
  • Essential oils
  • Muscle massage oils

Note that IVF patients do need to avoid anything with scents during some parts of the process, so make sure she can use any scented products before gifting.

Support Above All

Because they need your support and love right now.

Globally, infertility affects one in six adults. That’s a lot of people who have either tried to have a baby or considered having one, but had to deal with grief and stress on top of all of it. For those who are dealing with infertility or those who are in the process of IVF and other tests and treatments, all they truly need is your love and care. But there are some great, easy gifts to get someone going through infertility as well that can add an additional level of support.

“The most important thing is just support without advice. That’s the greatest gift,” Brent and Brittany Glaze, a Georgia couple who went through several years of infertility and are now expecting their first baby via IVF tell me. “Some days aren’t going to be all sunshine and rainbows — it can get very dark. That’s when a simple act of checking in and letting this person vent without judgement and simply active listening is the best gift.” But both of them share that if you really want to give your friend going through infertility a gift, choose things that bring comfort and joy. Dinner, a nice card, something cozy — all of those kinds of items can let your friend know that you’re there for them and that they’re supported.

But above all: just be there for your friend. Let them vent, let them cry, and try to make them laugh. “That’s the stuff you need. Prayers and positive vibes are great, but nothing replaces genuine laughter,” the Glazes tell me. So pick one of the below gifts, write a funny card, and send it to your friend. Infertility sucks — there’s no other way to describe it — but maybe you can bring them a little joy.

A Cozy Blanket

Double Sided Sherpa Weighted Blanket

Whether they’re dealing with the pain of another menstrual cycle, starting fertility treatments, or just need to feel cozy, this double-sided sherpa weighted blanket from Luna is a must. It comes in two different colors and weighs 10 pounds, so it’s the perfect size for a little anxiety-reducing coziness.

Their Favorite Snacks

Candy Sugarwish

As a little pick-me-up, send your friend a Sugarwish box . You just pay for the box and they get to decide if they want sweet or savory treats, and then they get to pick each specific snack they want. There are tons of options, and there are lots of old-fashioned candies that they may not be able to find easily, so it’s a really fun box to get.

A Pretty Candle Holder

Golden Decagon 3-Wick Candle Holder

Choose a candle that brings your friend some peace, whether it’s one that smells like summer or the ocean or a spring day (or heck, even a Christmas candle if that’s their favorite holiday) and then pop it into this lovely golden decagon candle holder . It’s so pretty and can fit any kind of house style.

Embroidered Journal — Menagerie Garden

There’s a lot to think about when you’re dealing with infertility, and if your friend needs an outlet, this beautiful embroidered journal from Rifle Paper is such a meaningful gift. They can use the journal to write down their frustrations, their hopes, or even letters to themselves as they document their journey through infertility and, hopefully, parenthood.

A Good Luck Charm

Amethyst Crystal Moon

This might be kind of woo-woo, but if you have a friend who is into crystals or good luck charms and sweet vibes, this amethyst crystal moon is such a nice gift. The moon is often considered a symbol of fertility, and an amethyst is said to have healing properties to help relieve your anxiety and bring calmness to you. Your friend can tuck it in their pocket or just set it out as a pretty little stone for some positive vibes.

A Nice Dinner

DoorDash Gift Card

If you can’t see your friend to treat them to a dinner out, definitely gift them a DoorDash gift card so they can enjoy their favorite meal in the comfort of their own home. This is especially nice if you know they’ve had a doctor’s appointment recently, are going through treatments, or if they’re just having a tough day.

Cozy Pajamas

Stars Above Soft Notch Collar Nightgown

Cozy pajamas are always a good gift for literally any situation, but especially for a friend dealing with infertility. I have this exact nightgown in like every color they make and I’m going to tell you: it’s perfection. It’s heavy enough to be cozy and comfy, but it’s also light enough to wear year-round and makes you feel like you’re starring in a Nora Ephron movie. What more could you want?

A Meaningful Piece Of Jewelry

Lillia Crystal Butterfly Pendant

Butterflies symbolize endurance and hope, and this gorgeous Lillia crystal butterfly pendant is such a meaningful gift for a friend going through infertility. It’s just dainty enough to go with any outfit or look, and also comes in blue if your friend likes a splash of color and boldness.

Their Favorite Toiletries

LANEIGE Water Sleeping Mask

Whatever your friend’s favorite self-care item or toiletries are, grab them a few restocks. I personally love this LANEIGE water sleeping mask and it makes me feel really well cared for when I use it after washing my face. It’s full of great moisturizing properties and may be just the pick-me-up they need at bedtime.

A Nice Heating Pad

GENIANI XL Heating Pad

A heating pad is always a must-have in a home, but for someone dealing with infertility, this nice heating pad may be just the perfect gift. It’s great for comforting them through cramps, but can also be helpful if they’re dealing with injections or fertility treatments and help relax muscles.

A Book Subscription Box

Book of the Month Subscription Box

The thing with infertility is that it lasts a long time. Through cycles, treatments, tests — it can be a lot and a long process. Help your friend get through it with a Book of the Month subscription box . This one will last three months and is a nice distraction for them through everything that comes with infertility.

A Sweet Card & Note

You're So Strong Card

This card is just the perfect choice for someone who’s dealing with infertility, and you can write a sweet note inside to let them know that you’re there for them whenever they need you.

A Floral Subscription Service

The Bouqs Co. Flower Subscription Service

Another sweet subscription service is this one from The Bouqs Co . Who doesn’t love gorgeous flowers arriving at their door? It’s such a nice gesture and a fun gift for them to get when they’re dealing with so much.

Cozy Slippers

Cozy Life Slippers - Enchanted Mandala

Slippers can be hard to buy for other people. Do they want hard-soled, soft-soled, do they prefer some that slip on or some that are like a flip-flop, etc. But these cozy life slippers from Vera Bradley are so perfect. They’re light, they almost feel like a thick sock, and they’re easy for them to pop into a bag if they want to wear them to an appointment or fertility treatment. They also come in several cute patterns and designs.

IVF Sticker Pack

IVF Sticker Pack

If your friend is going through IVF, they might need some cheering up, and this sticker pack is such a fun way to do just that. With sweet little encouraging sayings and some fun stickers featuring McDonald’s french fries and pineapple (both thought to be “good luck” for IVF), your friend will totally appreciate this gesture.

No matter where your friend is on their infertility journey, these gifts tell them just how much you love and support them.

What to avoid when buying gifts for women trying to conceive

My journey to build my beautiful family was 10 years in the making. After being diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in my early 20s, I was warned that a biological family might not be in my future. Hoping those warnings were wrong, I started treatment at a fertility clinic shortly before our wedding. When my husband and I said our vows, we truly meant “for better and for worse” because it felt like we were already in the midst of “the worst.” It took 11 long months of treatment, medication, injections, 183 blood draws, and internal ultrasounds before we finally got our positive test.

We were positively enthralled with our new little baby girl, so much so that we decided to start the process again when she was 7 months old. We knew first-hand what would be involved: Months of grueling early mornings, blood work, ultrasounds, artificial hormones, and injections, this time with a toddler in tow. And then it happened: Two hearts beating on that ultrasound screen. We couldn’t believe our luck to have two more little sisters join our family!

Looking back now, it’s easy to gloss over those terrible days with their failed cycles, hormonal swings, self-administered injections, exhaustion, and the mental toll of being told your body is broken over and over again. Meanwhile my girlfriends were seemingly getting pregnant effortlessly, having baby showers, celebrating their children’s birthday parties, and doing all the things I yearned for.

I opened up to my friends and some family members, which was difficult to do. But when someone would ask at a party when we planned on starting a family, my cousin then knew to insert herself and change the topic. And when one of my good girlfriends found me crying in a bedroom at her daughter’s first birthday party, she didn’t need to ask what was wrong. She just knew and loved me anyway. It was in those moments that I knew I made the right choice to share our struggles.

My friends became my rock. My sounding board. And my biggest cheerleaders. They recognized that it was possible to feel two opposite and conflicting emotions at the same time: excitement for them, and sadness for me. But I didn’t really get on a gut level how much our friends supported us until one shipped me a gift to place under my pillow: moonstones, said to aid in fertility. When I felt like giving up, that thoughtful gift and the note that accompanied it was everything I needed to continue on.

You’re probably here because you know someone trying to conceive a baby and you don’t know how to support them. Trying to have a baby can feel all-encompassing, and lonely, so if someone you love is currently trying to conceive without any luck, the number one thing you can do is listen. Providing a safe place to vent, cry, share successes, hopes, or dreams without offering solutions or recommendations will make you the safe and supportive space your loved one truly needs.

But if you want a tangible expression of your caring, consider these gifts that reassure you’re there, you get it, and you care.

Why trust us?

Best practical gift for women trying to conceive, the maalbok store 2022-2023 planner.

A good quality planner is arguably the most practical gift you can give someone trying to conceive. There is so much to keep track of: ovulation days, lab stats, temperatures, appointments, next steps, and more. Having one place to write it all down is extremely helpful. Plus when they do become pregnant they can continue to use this to track details of their pregnancy.

This planner is great because you can see the month in a glance, and has space each day to write a few lines: reference, appointments, reminders, words of encouragement. It’s a great size to fit in a purse, and closes securely with elastic so it can remain private if needed.

Best fertility journal for women trying to conceive

Trying to conceive fertility journal, best jewelry for women trying to conceive, baydurcan gold pineapple necklace, best candle for women trying to conceive, mrsnaca warrior candle, best splurge for women trying to conceive, ovucore by ovusense.

This is one product that is often out of reach for so many struggling with infertility. The OvuCore by OvuSense is a real-time ovulation test and predictor kit, with a tracking app that alerts you up to 24 hours before you ovulate. The OvuCore also handles many aspects of your TTC clinical work: measuring your basal body temperature, charting your progesterone fluctuations, and allowing you to track your individual cycle characteristics and patterns.

The OvuCore can be used hand-in-hand with fertility treatment, and provides excellent data for your doctors if you decide to seek help. Fair warning though, this one is invasive: women need to insert the device into their vaginas every night in order for it to be accurate. So this may be a gift only for your most intimate of pals. The price includes a year of data monitoring; you can also purchase the OvuCore with a one-month subscription Opens a new window for $99.

Best affirmation cards for women trying to conceive

Affirmation cards for women by casey wiegand.

Affirmations and self gratitude go a long way during tough journeys. I love these affirmation cards by Casey Wiegand because they are so relevant to a TTC journey, and also extend beyond and into motherhood. It’s easy to feel badly about yourself when fertility goes sideways, so having this daily reminder of your own power and beauty can help tremendously with your mental and emotional health.

These cards can be displayed in the home, tucked into their car visor, left in a wallet, or pulled daily as an intentional agenda-setting practice. There are 62 cards in this set, packaged up in an heirloom keepsake box, so they’ll look great on a bedside table or on a bookshelf too.

Best lucky transfer socks for women trying to conceive

Ivf got this socks, best romantic gift for women trying to conceive, voucher for a hotel stay.

Trying to conceive is all-encompassing. It takes over every part of your life, and sometimes a change of scenery can be a great thing. Couples going through fertility treatment can be very conservative with their money because each cycle is expensive and you don’t know how long you will need to continue treatment for. So giving them the gift of a vacation can be one of the greatest things for them, both personally and as a couple.

Pick up a gift certificate for a popular hotel chain, a card from an online hotel booking site like Hotels.com, rent them a handy campsite, or if you’re feeling generous, give them an all-inclusive stay on a tropical island somewhere. This is absolutely one of those “it’s the thought that counts” kind of gifts.

Best crystal jewelry for women trying to conceive

Hopeloveshine rainbow moonstone necklace, best home decor for women trying to conceive, modest maverick shop keep going sign, best letterboard for women trying to conceive, mainevent felt letter board, best relaxing gift for women trying to conceive, best water bottle for women trying to conceive, goswag motivational water jug.

When I asked women in the TTC community for gift ideas, almost everyone gave me ideas of what not to do, which spoke volumes about how women trying to conceive or experiencing infertility have been treated. And I have to agree with them. Some gifts can be disappointing at best, and crushing at worst. Here’s what not to say, and what to buy.

“Just relax and it will happen”

The old saying that if you just relax it will happen needs to be thrown in the trash. Immediately. Also include “just stop thinking about it” or “go on vacation and it will happen”. Offering unhelpful suggestions like these only serves to make you feel better, not the person receiving the message. You’re basically saying their infertility is their own fault, which is neither helpful nor true.

Baby or pregnancy gifts

As much fun as baby gifts are, this is a big N-O as a gift for someone trying to conceive. There will be plenty of time to celebrate and love on that baby, but having a reminder in the closet or hallway daily that nobody is here to wear that adorable outfit, or play with that fun gift is painful. This is also true for any pregnancy-related gift. Until they need it, gifts like this are not helpful.

The 2023 Holiday Fertility Gift Guide For People Who Are Trying To Conceive

  • by  Elizabeth Gordon December 07, 2023 4 min read

fertility journey gifts

The holidays are the perfect opportunity to show support for your friends or loved ones on their fertility journey. Acknowledging this time of life — the joy and the struggle — by surprising them with a fertility-friendly gift can be a meaningful way to show how much you care. You might even play a part in helping their dreams come true in the new year.

A good book can be a comforting friend on anyone’s fertility journey. Our selection of reads on conceiving is perfect for those cozy nights in, offering a mix of expert advice, relatable stories, and helpful tips.

Here are a few from authors we love:

Baby Making for Everybody: Family Building and Fertility for LGBTQ+ and Solo Parents

This inclusive, straightforward guide to fertility is What to Expect Before You’re Expecting for families outside the heterosexual nuclear family model—perfect for LGBTQ+ and solo parents who want to have kids but don’t know where to start.

Fertility Rules: The Definitive Guide to Male and Female Reproductive Health

Bringing a baby into the world isn’t always easy, and the challenge often starts with the decision to conceive. Leslie Schrock’s Fertility Rules is your practical guide through that process, drawing on cutting-edge science to provide advice every step along the way, from the complexities of pre-conception planning to the nuances of conception itself and what to do if you run into challenges.

Trying to Conceive Essentials

Mosie baby conception essentials bundle.

The  TTC Essentials Trio is the perfect starter pack for the person who is ready to start their journey to parenthood. It comes with seven Mosie Baby Ovulation Predictors to pinpoint prime baby-making days, the Biogenesis™ Fertility Lubricant for a sperm-friendly boost, and two Mosie Baby Pregnancy Tests.

Sperm-friendly lube

Spice up your TTC journey with a dash of  Good Clean Love BioGenesis™ Fertility Lubricant . This is not just any lube; it's a sperm-safe, paraben-free superhero that aligns with your body's pH, enhancing both comfort and your chances of conception.

Fertility Supplements

The  Boost Supplement by Proov is an herbal ally for fertility, blending evening primrose oil, red clover, dong quai, and black cohosh to support the body’s estrogen balance and production naturally. Giving hormones a gentle nudge in the right direction for a healthier cycle creates the optimal environment for fertility.

Often overlooked, sperm need love (and Folate) too. The  Bird&be Male Fertility Supplement is a great way to ensure everything that plays a role in conceiving is in tip-top form. They also make incredible supplements for female fertility support too!

Fertility Tracker

For the person who loves tech —   the kegg is a cervical mucus tracker that helps someone identify their fertile window so they can try to conceive at the optimal time. This is an excellent gift for someone who would appreciate a deeper understanding of their body.

Mosie Baby E-Gift Card

The journey to make a baby can get  expensive . Fertility treatments, time off of work, and loads of pregnancy tests are just the beginning. A  Mosie Baby gift card to get the thing on their list, they want the most this year is a thoughtful way to show you care.

Acupuncture or Massage

An acupuncture treatment or massage can be particularly beneficial for someone trying to get pregnant. These treatments not only provide physical relief but can promote mental and emotional balance. They may also potentially enhance fertility by reducing stress and improving overall body function.

At-Home Insemination Kit

This gift could truly change their life. The  Mosie Baby At-Home Insemination Kit is a great gift option for anyone who has mentioned they’re interested in trying at-home insemination or that timing intercourse is putting a damper on the fun part of baby-making. Mosie Baby is the first patented home insemination syringe and has helped over 100,000 families try to conceive. Plus, the box can be a fun, uplifting storage solution for all their  TTC essentials .

Support & Hope

Fertility affirmation cards.

Fertility affirmation cards   offering daily words of encouragement are a wonderful way to support your friend or loved one on their journey to becoming a parent. These cards serve as gentle reminders of hope and resilience and provide strength and positivity during what can be a challenging journey.

Fertility Journal

Gifting a  fertility journal   is a thoughtful way to offer daily, mindful support. A journal provides a place to document this time of life, but this one, developed with input from licensed therapists, also offers tools for nurturing hope and resilience. Thoughtfully crafted prompts can help someone process their experiences, celebrate their progress, and maintain a positive outlook, making it a deeply meaningful and beneficial gift for someone trying to conceive.

Clean Skincare Kit

Some people who are trying to conceive may be more aware and concerned about the impact of toxins on their fertility. To subtly support their journey, consider giving a kit of  natural beauty or skincare products . With so many brands committing to cleaner practices, sharing your favorite clean beauty or finding something new gives them a chance to pamper themselves on this journey.

Fun Activities

Gifting an experience like an escape room, cooking class, or a night out dancing can provide a much-needed distraction from the stresses of trying to conceive. These activities offer a chance to unwind, have fun, and hopefully relax without being told to relax, which, let’s face it,   never   works.

Hello Vulva Tote Bag

Our  'Hello Vulva' tote bag   is a cheeky holiday gift, celebrating body positivity with a playful and educational twist.  This bag is perfect for toting everyday essentials, or it could be an ironic place to store TTC items that will put a smile on your friend or loved one’s face throughout their journey.

Give the gift of fertility support this season

No matter what you choose to give, remember the most meaningful gift is showing that you see and support this huge step your friend’s or loved one’s life. Whether you express that through a thoughtfully chosen present or quality time spent together, we know it will be appreciated. Happy holidays, and may the new year bring joy and fulfillment to everyone on their TTC journey.

Shopping for friends on a fertility journey: infertility gifts

fertility journey gifts

Struggling to find a last-minute gift for a close friend going through a fertility struggle? We’re here to help.

This is a sensitive time of year for many people, and for those with fertility struggles, the holidays can be a painful reminder of the families they are trying to build. If you want to give a thoughtful gift to your friend who’s dealing with infertility, you have quite a few options. There are many lists sharing the best infertility gifts – from mindful jewelry made of fertility-related stones to pineapple-emblazoned socks and clothing. But how do you know whether these gifts are appropriate for your loved one? We’re breaking it down.

Our best recommendations

We know that your aim is to provide your friend with a thoughtful, supportive gift this season. That may mean an infertility-related present, but keep in mind that receiving these gifts can just be another difficult reminder of this draining experience. If you want to support your friend, we recommend a gift that is unrelated to fertility and provides them with a fun experience or relaxing activity.

For your friends going through infertility, we recommend these gifts:

  • A fun activity like an escape room, arcade, or cooking class
  • A relaxing spa treatment or at-home self care package
  • A nice bottle of wine or voucher to their favorite restaurant
  • Good old-fashioned quality time

“But what about…”

Hopeful gifts

There are many “hopeful” infertility gifts for men and women, from necklaces and charms stamped with “Hope” or “Believe,” to shirts, mugs, and more. These can be lovely if your friend regularly rocks this style of accessory. But proceed with caution: you don’t want to risk your friend perceiving this gift as downplaying the severity of their struggle, medical condition, or work so far. However, if your friend loves inspirational quotes and messages, this might be a nice option.

Loss related gifts

There are many beautiful gifts for parents who have experienced loss, from embryo paintings to delicate angel-wing jewelry. However, we all know that this type of loss is extremely sensitive. Your friend may not be ready to receive a reminder of their loss, and that’s okay. We recommend skipping these gifts, or checking in with your friend or someone close to them to gauge whether this type of infertility gift would be appreciated or hurtful.

Pregnancy related gifts

We recommend against pregnancy-related gifts for friends going through infertility. Many women undergoing fertility struggles have shared the pain they feel when they open that drawer and see all of the baby and pregnancy-related items they haven’t yet been able to use. The holidays are a time of love and joy, so it may feel natural to try to support your friend’s journey with this type of gift, but unfortunately it might just cause too much pain. We recommend skipping any baby supplies or pregnancy-related gifts for your loved ones struggling with fertility this season.

Fertility advice books and gifts

Chances are, your friend is already working with a whole fertility team, so giving the gift of a fertility coaching session or fertility help book isn’t advised. Many people trying to conceive purchase these items themselves as well, so we’d bet your friend already has plenty of fertility books, articles, and more. A good alternative could be a fun fiction book or a journal they can fill with whatever they wish.

Remember, there’s more to your friend than infertility

We know it’s important to you to support your friend through their fertility journey. And we commend that! But remember, there are ways you can do so without gifting them something fertility-related. Lending a helping hand with other stressful parts of life or helping provide a fun, de-stressing activity may be the best way to support your friends.

Fertility gifts are lovely, but they can be a minefield as people’s infertility experiences are diverse. There’s no one-size-fits-all gift for anyone, and unfortunately the same is true for your friends experiencing infertility. The good news is that your friend has YOU – a supportive presence they know they can turn to when they need it. Sometimes the best gift of all is just being present: checking in on your friends and letting them know that they can lean on you if they need to.

The Best Fertility & Infertility Gifts and Products On Etsy- A Gift Guide (For Yourself?)

Reading time: 3 minutes · Updated: Aug 9, 2018 by Anna Rapp

Share the love! :-)

Fertility Gift Guide on Etsy, Infertiltiy, IVF, IUI, TTC

I love Etsy. It’s true. I can get lost shopping there, and I love how most of the products are so unique.  Etsy is a place where plenty of crafters are aware of the struggle for some of us to conceive, and as such have created plenty of products to support us during TTC, infertility, and pregnancy after infertility and miscarriage. Some of these gifts might be perfect to get for your friend who is trying to conceive, but some you may want to buy for yourself as a treat!

Although the holidays are a time of merriment and gift giving to others, it can be a hard time for people struggling to build a family.  And you know what- there is nothing wrong with buying yourself a little treat! One of the most important lessons of my fertility journey was that I really had to start mothering myself.  That meant spending time doing self-care, feeding myself well, and just generally being gentle and loving towards myself.  And you know what? Sometimes that means buying myself a present.

Before I share the gifts I just want to highlight a couple of special Etsy shops that you might want to browse around:

FertileGems – Fertility jewelry- and its lovely!

TheFertileGarden – Fertility jewelry, infertility gifts, and IVF/IUI support items

FertileLotus – Yoga & Buddhist inspired Fertility Bracelets & Jewelry

LottieandCo – Fertility Apparel and Gifts

I’ve separated these gifts into a few categories- inspirational,  funny, religious, fertility charms & magick, and pregnancy & birth.  Like I said before, you can’t find stuff like this anywhere other than Etsy! Remember, these are just a selection!  Etsy is a treasure trove of fertility-inspired gifts, jewelry, inspiration, and ritual supplies!

Best IVF Care Packages and Gifts to Show You Care

Updated: December 6, 2021    by: Deze   |   2 Comments

Are you going through fertility treatment or know someone starting IUI or IVF? This post is to give you ideas, so that you can make the most thoughtful IVF Care Package possible.

ivf care package ideas

If you are visiting this page to create an IVF care package for someone that you know, I first want to thank you.

The IVF journey is a hard one and it will stress the hopeful parents emotionally, physically and financially.

The process starts with multiple consultations, labs and ultrasounds. Then, to prepare for retrieval, hormone shots are given daily in order to stimulate and grow the ovaries/eggs. All of these hormones and medications have the potential to cause side effects, extreme bloating and lots of sore spots (from the injections). If viable embryos are collected, the process continues with implantation of the embryos followed by an agonizing two-week-wait to see if you were successful in getting pregnant. And we haven’t even touched on the thousands of dollars that are involved in making this all happen.

It may not feel like there is much you can do to help out, but trust me, having a support system and people that care enough to send you a gift or care package means more than you can ever know.

For you (and for the IVF mama that chooses to treat herself) , I’ve compiled this list of over 25 thoughtful IVF gift ideas (& tips) to help you put together the most impactful IVF care package possible.

What to Say to Someone Going Through IVF (& How to Show Support)

I get it, it’s hard to know what to say. But don’t let that keep you from saying something.

One foolproof way to extend IVF encouragement is to say “ I’M HERE FOR YOU “ . This simple statement shows support, solidarity and eagerness to help.

What is an IVF Care Package?

An IVF Care Package is simply a box or basket of things that you put together for someone that is about to go through, currently going through or has recently gone through IVF (or even IUI).

Below, you will find ideas on what to send someone going through IVF. The ideas are divided into different sections (couples, her, him, self) to help you further personalize the IVF box.

25+ IVF Gift & Care Package Ideas

Ivf care package ideas (for couples).

IVF is often a family affair and can be draining for all parties involved. So, when you're putting together a care package, consider making one that targets the entire couple.

Since readymade IVF gifts for couples are hard to come by, you can easily make your own with some of the thoughtful ideas below.

fertility journey gifts

Dual Heating Pad/Cold Pack

Not only does IVF require many, many injections, the person going through IVF (or their partner) has to give themselves these shots! And mind you, some of them are painful and/or irritate the skin.

Some women find that icing the injection area before the injection decreases pain. Others say that using a warm pad after the injection is more soothing. Some do both!

Well, this pineapple pad can be frozen or microwaved to be used at either temperature. (And they're super cute too!)

fertility journey gifts

IVF Milestone Cards

As discussed, IVF is a process that involves many steps. Milestone cards are a VERY popular item to have during IVF because they memorialize and honor each step of what is, truly, a long journey. They are also perfect for scrapbooking down the line when they are blessed with their miracle baby.

This particular set is a digital download , which allows you to print multiple cards that mark things like- first and last day of stims, egg collection results, retrieval and transfer days, etc.

If you don't want to go through the trouble of printing cards, you can also buy already-printed IVF Milestone Cards .

fertility journey gifts

Couples Book to Read

A book like " Get A Life: His & Hers Survival Guide to IVF " is the perfect selection for a couple going through IVF.

Basically, it is 2 books-in-1: a survival guide for men and a guide for women. A couple can read it together because each chapter in both sections match and are complimentary.

"Get A Life" is not only meant to give advice, it also shares the personal stories of the authors who went through IVF as well.

fertility journey gifts

Calendar Stickers for Fertility

Google "IVF Calendar" and you will realize just how intensive and complicated that the timeline can get. Staying organized is important which is why this is a great gift for someone going through IVF.

These calendar stickers draw attention to important dates and events like when to start meds, when to take the trigger shot and what days to get blood draws and ultrasounds.

fertility journey gifts

Calming Candle

I believe that aromatherapy is an underappreciated way to soothe ourselves. In a high stress time like IVF, it is wonderful to come home to a house filled with relaxing scent.

You can pick up any relaxing candle, but if you'd like to stay on theme, you can snag this "IVF Got This" Infused with Faith, Trust and Baby Dust - Soy Candle from Etsy.

They are handmade and come in 3 different sizes and 12 different scents!

fertility journey gifts

Some people like to write off gift cards as an impersonal gift, but to be honest, they are often the most useful gift.

IVF is notoriously expensive, so a general gift card like a VISA card or an Amazon gift card allows them to buy whatever they need.

You can also do gift certificates for experiences like massages, acupuncture or the movie theater.

fertility journey gifts

Cozy Blanket

Cozy = Comfort, and this is a good time to offer any and all sources of comfort. For anything from a first period gift to a surgery recovery gift , this extra soft fleece blanket is easily the most flexible gift on this list.

fertility journey gifts

Coloring Book (or Pages)

Adult coloring books are a fun way to temporarily distract oneself from the commotion of fertility treatment.

You can include whole coloring books in your care package or you can do individual IVF / IUI themed coloring pages that depict different drawings and sayings.

fertility journey gifts

Snacks & Drinks

Need I say more? I am the biggest fan of eating away my sorrows!

A fun way to add snacks and drinks to a care package is with a theme. For example, you can buy all yellow snacks and drinks to make a "sunshine box" that brings light and joy to the recipients. (For specific ideas, check out my post: 12 (themed) BOX OF SUNSHINE IDEAS guaranteed to spread joy ).

fertility journey gifts

Meal Subscription

Who wants to think about meal planning when going through something as intensive as IVF or IUI. Certainly not I.

Meal subsciption services like Hello Fresh, Gobble, Home Chef and others will allow your loved one to enjoy healthy meals without the fuss of grocery-shopping and prep.

fertility journey gifts

Start a Meal Train (Homemade Meals)

A meal train is a way for a group of people to make and deliver a series of meals to someone who needs it. Take Them A Meal is an easy way to coordinate this online.

(And if your IVF couple is gluten-free, make sure to get ideas from this post: Gluten-Free Care Packages ).

**CAUTION** Make sure to ONLY involve people that the IVF-parents have already told about their IVF Journey. Please respect their privacy.

IVF ENCOURAGEMENT FOR HER

Have you noticed that many IVF gifts for her are decorated with pineapples?

The pineapple has become a widespread symbol for IVF (& fertility in general) for multiple reasons. Some believe that eating pineapple the day of embryo transfer improves the chances of successful implantation. In addition, pineapples are tough on the outside yet sweet on the inside, which is absolutely true for IVF mamas.

fertility journey gifts

IVF Medication Bag

Make all the injections a little more bearable with this adorable IVF medication bag that says "Worth Every Shot" .

Visit this Etsy shop for more bag styles, as well as a variety of coordinating IVF accessories that you can add to the care package.

fertility journey gifts

Wish Necklace for Fertility

This 14K Gold Vermeil and Sterling Silver necklace comes packaged in a jewelry box adorned with the most inspiring poem. It starts with " She has been broken. She has been defeated. She has felt the pain that most couldn't handle. But yet, she never runs... ".

fertility journey gifts

IVF Pineapple Necklace

This gold filled necklace is hand stamped with a pineapple and hung on a card that says " sticky vibes ". A simple gift that represents so much.

fertility journey gifts

Cute Band Aids

Talk about appropo! These Welly bandages are named "Bravery Badges". They come in all kinds of fun patterns and colors and will have your IVF warrior almost looking forward to using a new one after every injection.

fertility journey gifts

After being pricked, stung and ultrasounded so often, these pink Himalayan bath salts will allow her to pamper, soften and soothe a body that has endured A LOT!

fertility journey gifts

Socks are a VERY popular gift when it comes to IVF. Why? Because they're pretty much the only thing that you can keep on during the procedures.

These are the original "IVF Got This®" socks that are worn by many during IVF retrieval and/or transfer.

IVF ENCOURAGEMENT FOR HIM

Looking for IVF gifts for him? I get how that can be a toughie. Here are some awesome gift ideas to help him de-stress and show his support in the midst of IVF.

fertility journey gifts

Comfy Socks

He could use some encouraging socks as well!

These " Lucky Socks " are made from a super-soft cotton blend that they say will hold up after hundreds of washes. (Which is important if he'll be wearing them every single day of the 2-week-wait).

fertility journey gifts

He needs TLC too! These all-natural bath salts infused with essential oils are to be added to warm bath water for a stress-relieving soak.

fertility journey gifts

Something to Read

" How to Make Love to a Plastic Cup : A Guy's Guide to the World of Infertility " is a popular book for IVF men, written by Greg Wolfe.

The humorous nature of this book about infertility makes it a page-turner.

fertility journey gifts

Something to Watch

He most likely doesn't need any help finding something to watch, to be honest. But, if you want to gift him something related to the infertility experience (and if he doesn't mind a tear-jerker) , This is Us is an awesome show, in which some of the characters struggle with multiple fertility issues.

You can purchase seasons of this show on Amazon Prime.

fertility journey gifts

Men's IVF Shirt

On Retrieval Day and/or Transfer Day, a Tshirt like this one helps him to be the ultimate cheerleader without saying a word.

IVF SELF CARE GIFTS FOR MYSELF

Sometimes you may not have anyone to buy you a gift, but hey, you can definitely buy yourself something. If you're looking for IVF self care gifts for yourself, here are some great ideas.

fertility journey gifts

Acupuncture Mat

Acupuncture has often been linked to improved fertility (and reduced chronic pain and stress).

This foam mat and pillow are covered in acupressure points to increase blood circulation and stimulate the nerves. This product is very highly rated!

fertility journey gifts

Spa Gift Basket

Not many things say self care like the spa.

This aesthetically pleasing Spa Gift Box includes a: + scented candle (+ box of matches) + handmade bar of soap + bath soak made of pink himalayan sea salt and dried flowers + lip balm

fertility journey gifts

DoorDash Yourself Some Food

You simply deserve it, come on!

fertility journey gifts

Pineapple Bandages

Buy yourself some good luck bandages to put on after every injection. These pineapple band aids come in a sturdy tin and are individually wrapped so that you can easily pop them into your purse or IVF care kit.

fertility journey gifts

Comic Relief Book

" Infreakinfertility : How to Survive When Getting Pregnant Gets Hard " is a popular book for those going through infertility because it is blunt, honest and most especially, because of its dark humor.

Here's an excerpt so you can see what I mean: " I felt like a babyless freak. No matter what we tried, I couldn’t get pregnant, even after standing on my head after sex. I was pretty sure I was the only woman on the planet going through infertility, certainly the only one jamming needles into my butt on commercial breaks during my favorite TV shows. Everyone was getting pregnant around me and no one was talking about what happened if you couldn’t. "

fertility journey gifts

Subscription to Hulu, Netflix, Disney Plus, Etc

Especially when it comes to those 2 weeks after transfer day, you will need something to keep you busy and distracted. Get yourself a subscription to one of the video streaming services.

And if you need more distraction techniques, read 37 Ways To Thrive In The 2-Week-Wait .

How to Show a Friend Encouragement (That’s Going Through IVF)

In addition to making a care package for a friend doing IVF, you can show encouragement in many other ways.

1. Check on Them Regularly

Let them know they are on your mind by shooting them a quick text or ringing them up to ask them how they are doing.

2. Offer to Help

They say actions speak louder than words. Likewise, offering to walk their dog or do some housework so that your friend can get some rest, goes a long way.

3. Bring a Meal

Taking the time to prepare a meal is an incredible (and practical) way to show someone that you have their back.

4. Write Encouragement Letters

A letter is gives your friend/family member something to save for when they are on the other side of IVF – with their baby. (For a unique gift or care package , write Open When Letters , with a different letter for each step of the IVF journey ).

5. Be Available to Chat

If they send you a message or give you a call, try to be there to answer. Even if you are in the middle of something, you can let them know that you are available by saying something like “ I am in the middle of xyz, I can give you my undivided attention in 1 hour, is that okay? “

6. Lend a Listening Ear

The art of listening often does not require you to say a single word. It just requires you to stay engaged and show them, both verbally and nonverbally, that they have your undivided attention.

7. Be There Without Judgment

I hope this is not harsh, but it is not your place to make your friends decisions for them. Or even to tell them how they should feel. The best gift that you can give them is to offer your support and listening ear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do i say to someone going through ivf.

  • For inspiration, see my Infertility Quotes , Fertility Affirmations & Bible Verses about Fertility .
  • Avoid making promises ( e.g. you will for sure have a baby this time) because you simply don’t know.
  • Let them know that you are available with a listening ear, a hug and to help in any way that they need.

Are IVF care packages always a good idea?

Yes – as long as the IVF parents have personally shared their plan to do IVF with you.

I do not think IVF care packages are a good idea if you just overheard or discovered that someone is going through IVF. Every family is entitled to their privacy. Also, there may be situations where the IVF parents specifically ask that their loved ones refrain from doing or saying anything that has to do with IVF or infertility (in order to minimize stress or anxiety, for example). At the end of the day, you can always ask before sending one and then respect their wishes.

What are some gift ideas for IVF success?

IVF success means baby! Appropriate gift ideas for IVF success are the same congratulatory gifts that would be appropriate for any new pregnancy.

Is it appropriate to send a care package for IVF failure?

I would recommend avoiding anything that mentions the word “ failure “. Instead, send an encouraging care package or gift that is focused on “ hope ” and “ future success “.

6 Gift Ideas For A Friend Struggling With Infertility

From physical to emotional to financial, struggling with infertility can leave someone feeling overwhelming pain. If you want to help a friend experiencing infertility feel less alone with the perfect gift for someone struggling with infertility , read on to help you find something meaningful.

Before you begin shopping, it’s important to understand and empathize with the challenge of infertility. When you have a better idea of what your friend is going through, you can find a truly meaningful infertility gift.

What Is Infertility?

Infertility is the inability to get pregnant after trying to conceive for at least one year of unprotected sex. However, infertility doesn’t only occur for couples who are unable to get pregnant the first time. Secondary infertility can happen to couples who previously got pregnant but are then unable to conceive again.

In some cases, there is a definitive reason why a couple goes through infertility. Common reasons for infertility are polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or low sperm production. Sometimes, however, the reason is unknown, which can feel incredibly frustrating.

Infertility can cause stress, anxiety, and even depression. Some couples take the blame for not being able to conceive, even though infertility is blameless. Some people grieve the loss of a child they may never have. They may have gone through a miscarriage and experienced pregnancy loss, which requires a different kind of grieving process.

Managing infertility can feel incredibly lonely, even though nearly 19% of American struggle with it. As you shop for a gift for someone with infertility, keep in mind what they are going through. Search for a gift that could bring comfort to them if even just in a small way with these infertility gift ideas.

Best Infertility Gift Ideas

1. anything with a pineapple.

The pineapple has become a powerful symbol to represent infertility. The origination of the pineapple infertility symbol came from two influencers. Both women, who went through IVF, formed a community to help couples feel less alone in their infertility challenge. The pineapple symbol became a way for the community to break the silence on their struggle and normalize the infertility conversation.

Any gift featuring a pineapple would make a wonderful present for someone struggling with infertility. Below are a few ideas that would make a great gift, but the possibilities are endless:

  • Clothing (sweatshirt, t-shirt, etc)

2. Personalized Journal

Going through infertility can trigger a wide range of thoughts and emotions and it can be difficult to manage those feelings. Journaling is a wonderful way to get thoughts out and can even help relieve stress and anxiety, which are commonly experienced by people struggling to conceive.

Gift your friend a personalized journal to encourage them to spill their feelings onto the pages. Consider penning a message inside the front cover empathizing with their struggle and encouraging them to write freely about their fertility journey.

3. Date Night

For couples struggling with infertility, it becomes a big priority in their relationship. Infertility is a frequent topic of conversation and they attend numerous doctor’s appointments. Give them a chance to have a stress-free date together where they can focus on themselves as a couple.

Consider a gift card to a restaurant, the movies, or an activity they enjoy. Gifting them a date night will be a wonderful way to encourage them to find time to enjoy each other’s company.

4. Self-Care Package

When your friend is consumed by trying to conceive, many things fall off their priority list. Most of the time the first thing to go is self-care. To help manage stress, self-care is essential, so provide them with the tools in a self-care package they need to relax.

It’s important to keep the recipient in mind so you deliver something you know they will enjoy. A gift certificate for a massage is a great way to relax. If they prefer to spend time at home, a self-care kit complete with bubble bath, a soothing candle, and delicious tea can do the trick.

5. Thoughtful Card

Gifts don’t need to be extravagant to be meaningful and you can be really thoughtful with a simple card. Infertility can be a lonely experience, even if it appears they have a strong support system. Let them know that they are not alone and that their feelings are valid. A thoughtful card lets them know that you acknowledge their struggle and are there for them if they need you.

6. IVF Medicine Pouch

When going through an IVF cycle, couples often need to carry around a variety of items including vials, pill bottles, needles, and bandages. This pouch is something they will take to doctor’s appointments, overnight trips, or even to work. Keeping all their IVF essentials in one place helps them feel in control of their fertility treatments, which is useful as infertility can feel frustratingly uncontrollable.

Search for an IVF pouch that features a cute quote, fertility affirmation, or punny phrase to bring a smile to their face. Even a pouch in their favorite color can feel comforting.

No matter which thoughtful gift ideas you choose for your friend, any gift you put a great deal of thought into will have meaning for the recipient. Remember, not all gifts are physical. Sometimes, the best gift you can give someone with infertility is a listening ear, a hug, or simply your presence.

Sometimes finding a cool Mother’s Day gift can feel like a daunting task. After all, moms deserve nothing less than the very best. But is it possible to let someone know how much they mean to you with a single gift? “For me it’s not about receiving something necessarily, but more just spending that quality time as a family all together,” Victoria Beckham tells Vogue . “Whether we are having a lovely meal or doing an activity, everyone is usually travelling and busy so being able to have my husband and all of my children together is really special.” In addition to spending quality time with those we love, it's also nice to wrap up a little luxury to mark such special occasions. And while one item could never fully express the magnitude of gratitude we have for all that our mother figures do, there are a few clever ways to put a smile on her face.

The Cool Mom-Approved Gift List

  • The Treasured Book: “ A Life’s Work: On Becoming a Mother” , $16
  • The Classic Flowers: Urbanstems Coquette bouquet , $65
  • The Scented Candles: Jo Malone travel candle 3-piece gift set , $108
  • The Memory Saver: Pottery Barn Kids keepsake box , $119

Fertility expert Leslie Schrock explains why embryonic personhood will never work in practice

  • IVF is under increasing scrutiny by conservative groups after the fall of Roe v. Wade.
  • They take particular issue with the treatment's destruction of embryos.
  • One author and fertility expert explains why these views won't work in practice.

Insider Today

In 2020, a hospital patient in Alabama wandered into a storage room, removed embryos from tanks of liquid nitrogen, and dropped them on the floor. Couples sued over wrongful death.

In February, the Alabama Supreme Court sided with the couples, ruling that the frozen embryos could legally be considered children.

"Even before birth, all human beings have the image of God, and their lives cannot be destroyed without effacing his glory," Chief Justice Tom Parker wrote in a concurring opinion.

The ruling not only created chaos for the state's fertility doctors — it kicked off a national debate over access to IVF.

The treatment helps women get pregnant by combining eggs and sperm in a lab setting. The goal is to create multiple embryos, with the hope of creating just one successful pregnancy. The rest might be thrown away or stored for future use.

But in a world without the protections afforded by Roe v. Wade, many fear "fetal personhood" laws, which give fetuses and potentially embryos the legal rights of a person, could complicate the IVF process for patients by raising the question: does throwing away excess embryos constitute murder?

Solutions like making one embryo at a time, for example, won't work, Leslie Schrock, an investor, author, and fertility expert, told BI in an interview. IVF requires making several embryos at once, as it mimics the very inefficiency that takes place naturally in our own bodies.

Natural human biology isn't perfect

Last week, Senate Republicans voted against a bill that would protect IVF access. At the same time, Southern Baptists, at their national conference , voted to oppose the use of IVF, but the resolution didn't explicitly oppose the creation of embryos that way — just their destruction.

All of these organizations have signaled that they believe life begins when "sperm meets egg," Schrock said. If you look at IVF through that lens alone, you would naturally believe that discarding embryos isn't okay. "There's no way around that," she said.

But our natural biology discards embryos all the time.

Most embryos conceived naturally don't survive in the human body. Among those that become successful pregnancies, one in four end in miscarriage .

Related stories

"The biology of creating humans is fundamentally flawed," Schrock said. "It's not perfect. It's not like every time a sperm and egg meets, you get a viable pregnancy, much less a live birth."

IVF mimics this natural funnel. Not every fertilized egg will turn into an embryo; not every embryo will show up normal in genetic testing; and even the embryos that make it that far don't always transfer into the uterus successfully, Schrock said.

Making one embryo at a time would decrease success rates, extend wait times, and put further demands on IVF's lab workers, which are already in short supply, per Schrock and BI's reporting .

"There's a lot of loss along the way," she said. "It's not purposeful loss, it's not wasteful, it's not on purpose."

People aren't really choosing IVF

In the US, the treatment, which usually isn't covered by insurance, costs more than a Toyota Corolla. Meaning most IVF patients are either wealthy or taking out loans. (Yes, we live in a society in which your ability to have a baby can depend on your credit score.)

Women usually have to undergo two or three cycles to become pregnant, extending the financial and emotional costs of being a fertility patient.

Conservative groups can misunderstand that people who take this treatment on, per Schrock, are doing so because it's medically necessary to start a family — not because they want to.

Schrock herself nearly pursued IVF after suffering a miscarriage and medically necessary abortion. In the latter case, the fetus had stopped growing at around twelve weeks. At that point, she hadn't had children yet, and the choice — or lack thereof, rather — blew her mind.

"It was not something I wanted, it was not something I had ever even imagined was possible, and it was the hardest experience of my life," she said. "It's still visceral to this day, but medically speaking, I didn't have another option."

Deeply personal challenges are often where the IVF journey begins — and, sadly, ends.

Earlier this year, one patient, who asked not to be named, described her experience with fertility care to BI as a never-ending series of arbitrary choices, marked by a miscarriage and the end of her relationship.

"People don't just go into the process because it's fun," Schrock told BI, adding: "It's hard, it's disruptive, it's emotional. It is painful in many cases. And it does not always end with a healthy pregnancy."

Schrock, who has written about her experiences in books, felt shame for years, wondering where she went wrong.

"But you know what, it's just biology at the end of the day," she said. "It's taken me years to get to that. But it wasn't my fault, though. It wasn't my fault that it happened."

Tara Lipinski Shares Silver Lining to Traumatizing Fertility Journey

Originally appeared on E! Online

En route to her history-making, gold medal-winning free skate , Olympian Tara Lipinski picked herself up off the ice countless times. But all the setbacks she triple toe looped over to claim her spot atop the podium at the 1998 Nagano Olympics seem relatively minor when stacked up next to her grueling five-year fertility journey .

"It truly was the most difficult thing that I've encountered," the athlete detailed in an exclusive interview with E! News. "I look back at it like, 'Oh, you were an athlete, you went to the Olympics.' That was easy. That was nothing compared to this."

And while the physical effects of enduring four miscarriages, 24 surgeries, eight egg retrievals and six failed transfers shouldn't be discounted, "I think the emotional toll it took on me was the hardest part," Lipinski continued. With her and husband Todd Kapostasy "being confronted with so much loss and grief and failure constantly, it really took us a long time to get a win. So you just feel like you're repetitively getting hit and knocked down. And it's like, how do you just get back up and try again?"

Stars Open Up About Pregnancy Loss

But she did continue to find ways to lace up those metaphorical skates .

"Maybe my athlete mindset kicked in at times," the 42-year-old explained, "because I would go through a miscarriage and not want to get out of bed for two weeks and I would tell my husband, 'We're never doing this again. We're done. This is the end of the road.'"

But after weeks of grieving, Lipinski continued, "I'd be on the phone, making an appointment where I knew I was getting back in the game. Five years is a long time, but when you don't know what's ahead, you just go down that same cycle."

Her personal merry-go-round led her to 8-month-old Georgie , the daughter she and director-producer Kapostasy welcomed last October with the help of a surrogate . But she's careful to note that's not the only way to go for gold, so to speak.

Procedures like in vitro fertilization (IVF) aren't guaranteed to work and whether due to finances or medical hardships, "a lot of people decide to move on and live a child-free life," explained Lipinski. "I feel like the word 'success' is something that needs to be taken out of infertility. It's a diagnosis, there is no success. So whether you move on to have a family or not, you've succeeded getting through something that's that difficult."

That's just one of the parables she hopes to deliver as fertility company Dandi 's newly minted Head of Community. .

"Since the arrival of my baby girl last year, I really have realized that I have so much passion towards the infertility community," Lipinski said of leaping into work that involves helping couples land fertility grants to fund their family-making efforts.

And she found herself particularly impressed with Dandi's plethora of offerings that range from IVF care kit and live injection support to a bustling WhatsApp-based community where, said Lipinski, "people can connect with one another to ask questions like, 'Should I check out a fertility acupuncturist?'"

It's the type of community Lipinski would have loved when she was panicking about properly mixing her IVF medication and sneakily following couples on Instagram using a burner account.

"I wish it was a resource that I had while I was going through this," she said. "I would just be Googling and hash tagging on Instagram to find other people who were telling their story that I could then relate to or feel validated by."

Because struggling with fertility can feel isolating "for so many reasons," Lipinski continued. "I isolated from friends and family and the world for so long because it was the only way I knew how to cope. But while you're in that little cocoon, it's so nice to have support from a place like Dandi. It makes the diagnosis less scary being able to connect with other people in your exact position."

And it means the Finsta won't be necessary as she and Kapostasy ready themselves to embark on their second surrogacy journey.

Though the hosts of the Tara Lipinski: Unexpecting podcast are eager to give Georgie a sibling close in age, "Nothing is guaranteed," stressed Lipinski. "I still remember the doctor's appointments and the scans and all of the anxiety that I had for so long. That just doesn't disappear overnight. So for me, it's just taking it day by day, and knowing anything can happen. And if there's anything that I learned it's that, even if there is failure, you get back up and you find a way."

And Georgie truly is the gold medal she worked so hard for.

"I remember, I was sobbing, because, obviously, the miracle of the moment, but also just relief," she described of holding her daughter for the first time. "I think it was the first breath that I actually took in five years. It just felt like all of this pain was coming out of me. I was like, 'Oh my gosh, this is actually happening. I thought this wasn't going to happen to me.'"

And she was so affected by the grief and pain of everything she had gone through that she found herself waking to a middle-of-the-night anxiety attack mere hours before Georgie's arrival.

"There so much that you deal with when you experience, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say, trauma," Lipinski explained of spending nine months fearing the worst. "And until I held her and saw her breathing, I was terrified."

Having experienced four losses, "the innocent, beautiful parts of pregnancy that people can experience, unfortunately I just wasn't able to tap into that," she said. Instead of spending appointments marveling at the presence of tiny fingers and toes, "I was like, 'There's going to be no heartbeat.' It's hard to experience it in a different way after everything you've been through."

But those blissful, delirious newborn days were pretty much everything she dreamed they could be.

"I do think there's a silver lining, even though there shouldn't be a silver lining to trauma or grief," said Lipinski. "But if there is one, it's just the overwhelming feeling of gratitude that I have for every single moment. I waited for these poopy diapers, I waited for things spilling out of my hands and coffee falling on the floor. This is what I was waiting for. And I'm experiencing it now."

While she's having fun with the tentpole events—why, yes, that was Georgie sporting a tiny version of Mom's Olympic costume on her first Halloween—"It really is those quiet moments that I am savoring," said Lipinski, "like, hearing her cry in her crib for me to come pick her up when she wakes up from a nap. There's just so many moments that I'm so grateful for."

Though Georgie's first Olympics is probably going to glide right to the top of that list.

With the broadcaster set to host coverage of the closing ceremonies at the 2024 Paris Olympics alongside her figure skating partner in crime Johnny Weir as well as sportscaster Mike Tirico , Georgie "already has her little beret with her initials on it," said Lipinski, "and Uncle Johnny is ready to show her the city. So we're excited."

Add to the bank of core memories she's been intentionally collecting since last fall.

"Almost every person I meet, they're just like, 'It goes so fast, before you know it, they're going to be out of the house,'" noted Lipinski. "And she's only eight months old, but I already am like, 'You better be taking in this little milestone—she's crawling, she's pulling up.' You're just so proud of them because they're growing in front of your eyes. But at the same time, I'm like, 'Okay, all the advice, just take it all in.'"

Because while the journey to the top of this particularly podium was a battle, the prize was priceless.
