Scotney Castle reflected on the water in Tunbridge Wells, surrounded by trees

The 8 best things to do in Royal Tunbridge Wells right now

From cosy pubs to country walks, here are all the best things to do in Royal Tunbridge Wells

Joe Minihane

Tunbridge Wells is a very, very nice place. So nice, in fact, it was given ‘Royal’ status in 1909 by King Edward VII, because Queen Victoria liked it there so much. Oh, and there was the thing about King James drinking from the chalybeate spring in the seventeenth century, where he said it cured him of illness.

Now, of course, the Kent town is a booming spa resort, nestled away in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by miles and miles of beautiful countryside. And just an hour out of London, it’s become a hot spot for day trips and for chilled-out, slow-paced weekends. From fabulous cafés to countryside hikes, here are the best things to do in Royal Tunbridge Wells right now.

Best things to do in Royal Tunbridge Wells

Walk along The Pantiles

1.  Walk along The Pantiles

Walk along The Pantiles , the historic heart of Tunbridge Wells. There’s no better way to soak up the grandeur of the town’s Georgian heyday than exploring these colonnaded walkways, lined with boutique shops and cute bars and cafés.

Soak up the vibes at Dunorlan Park

2.  Soak up the vibes at Dunorlan Park

Go for a stroll around the elegant, 78-acre Dunorlan Park , landscaped in the 1860s by Robert Marnock, a prominent Victorian gardener. If the sun is shining, row or pedalo around the boating lake, before taking in the countryside vistas from its grassy slopes with a picnic.

Stop for lunch on the High Street

3.  Stop for lunch on the High Street

If cake is calling, make a beeline for vintage-themed Juliet’s Café on the High Street – it has the most drool-worthy selection around, as well as plenty of vibrant salads and hearty sandwiches. Feeling fancy? Check out Coco Retro , an unashamedly old-school French spot with a focus on Parisian and northern French classics, or Thackeray's , a European fine dining spot in a 300-year-old building.  The Ivy also has an outpost here.

Play Pooh Sticks at Ashdown Forest

4.  Play Pooh Sticks at Ashdown Forest

Ashdown Forest , aka Winnie-the-Pooh’s Hundred Acre Wood, was home to Pooh and the gang for a very, very long time. Grab some sticks, head to the little bridge and get cracking. If you know, you know.

Explore Kent's countryside

5.  Explore Kent's countryside

When you're ready for more, check out the adventurer’s playground of Bewl Water .   Tunbridge Wells is surrounded by some of Kent’s most picturesque countryside. Head out and explore part of the  Tunbridge Wells Circular Walk .  The nearby High Weald AONB is criss-crossed with cycle routes, including  The Cuckoo Trail and Forest Way , both following regenerated, disused railway lines.

Grab a pint at The Guinea

6.  Grab a pint at The Guinea

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to cosy pubs where you can kick back with a pint of local ale. Our top pick is The Guinea for a truly old-school experience. If craft beer is more your bag, try Fuggles Beer Café . It offers more than 120 European beers – as well as a gin and whisky selection that’s hard to beat.

See Scotney Castle

7.  See Scotney Castle

Explore Scotney Castle , a short drive away. It’s as fairytale-esque as they come, with a turreted Elizabethan manor house and crumbling fourteenth-century moated castle, enveloped in wisteria and roses. It’s also full of secrets and stories: you can spot the ‘priest hole’ where a Catholic priest hid from persecution for seven years during the late 1500s.

Sleepover at The Spa Hotel

8.  Sleepover at The Spa Hotel

Holidaymakers may not head to Tunbridge Wells to ‘take the waters’ these days, but if it’s peace and relaxation you’re after you’ll find it at The Spa Hotel . At this eighteenth-century country mansion, a short walk from The Pantiles, you can find bright rooms, high ceilings and plush interiors, plus 14 acres of verdant grounds and a secluded lake where you can really get away from it all. Grab a deckchair and get stuck into a book or head to the spa for a steam or sauna, before enjoying a sundowner and a pizza from the outdoor oven on the terrace. From £108 a night.

Top 10 Things To Do In Tunbridge Wells

Tunbridge Wells is a charming town located in the heart of Kent. Known for its historic architecture, scenic outdoor spaces, and multitude of shopping choices, it’s a popular destination to visit. It’s worth noting its official name is Royal Tunbridge Wells, as its popularity with royalty and aristocrats was recognised in 1909 by King Edward VII who granted the town with its “Royal” prefix.

I can see why they loved it so much as it’s personally one of my favourite spots in Kent too! That’s why I’ve shared my top things to do in Tunbridge Wells for those looking to visit for the first time.

Things to do in Tunbridge Wells - The Pantiles

1. Visit The Pantiles

This area of Tunbridge Wells is what made me fall in love with the area. It’s the most iconic landmark of the town – the Pantiles – a beautifully restored 17th-century colonnade that once served as the heart of the town’s social scene.

The Pantiles, originally known as the Walks, was built in the early 17th century as a covered walkway for the visitors who came to take the waters at the nearby Chalybeate Spring. The spring was discovered in 1606 by a nobleman named Lord North, who found the water to be of remarkable curative properties. The popularity of the spring soon drew visitors from all over England, and Tunbridge Wells became a fashionable destination for the wealthy and influential.

The colonnade itself was added in 1700, with a series of shops and cafes that quickly became popular with the town’s visitors. The name “Pantiles” comes from the distinctive clay tiles that cover the colonnade’s roof.

Things to do in Tunbridge Wells - The Pantiles

Over the years, the Pantiles underwent several transformations, with new buildings added and others demolished. However, by the early 20th century, the colonnade had fallen into disrepair, and many of its shops were empty. It wasn’t until the 1980s that a major restoration project was undertaken, which saw the Pantiles restored to its former glory.

Today, the Pantiles is a vibrant and bustling destination. It remains a popular spot for locals as well as visitors who come to soak up the town’s rich history and enjoy a bite to eat. The colonnade is home to a number of events throughout the year, including jazz festivals, farmers’ markets, and vintage fairs. The annual Tunbridge Wells International Art Fair, which takes place across four days every July, attracts artists and collectors from all over the world. Visiting the Pantiles is one of the main things to do in Tunbridge Wells if you’re planning a visit.

Things to do in Tunbridge Wells - Bedford Place

2. See Bedford Place

The history of Bedford Place dates back to the early 19th century when it was first built as part of a larger development project in the town. The street was named after the Duke of Bedford, who was one of the primary landowners in the area. The original houses on Bedford Place were built in the Georgian style, with elegant facades and ornate detailing.

Over the years, Bedford Place underwent several changes. However, much of its original architecture and charm remained intact. Tunbridge Wells is a very affluent area, and this road is highly desirable. Despite being a terraced property that has only 2 bedrooms, the house sold on this street most recently (2022) went for over £750,000.

One of the most significant events in Bedford Place’s calendar is the annual street party, which takes place in the summer months. The party is a chance for residents to come together and celebrate their community, with live music, food stalls, and a range of family-friendly activities.

Chapel Place Tunbridge Wells

3. Explore Chapel Place

Chapel Place is a bustling street that is a much-loved part of the town, known for its mix of independent shops and eateries. The history of Chapel Place dates back to the 18th century when it was first built as part of the town’s expansion.

The street was named after the Methodist Chapel, which was built in the late 18th century and still stands today. The chapel was an important part of the community, hosting a range of events and activities, and was an important centre of social life in the town.

Some of the places you’ll find there include Chapel Place Gin Bar , Gabriella Jewellery , and gardening and homeware shop Le Petit Jardin .

This is also where the annual Jazz on the Pantiles festival is held in the summer months. The festival is a celebration of jazz music and culture, with a range of live performances and workshops.

Dunorlan Park

4. Walk around Dunorlan Park

I was quite shocked when I visited Dunorlan Park as I didn’t expect such a large and beautiful green space in an area that’s quite built up. However the space has been there since the 19th century when it was first developed as part of the Dunorlan estate. The estate was owned by a wealthy banker, Edward Hardman, who commissioned the park’s design by renowned landscape architect Robert Marnock.

Marnock’s design created a stunning landscape, with a large lake, wooded areas, and extensive gardens, all carefully planned to create a picturesque setting. In 1943, the park was opened to the public, and it quickly became a popular destination.

The lake is a popular spot for fishing and boating, and you can rent rowing boats and pedalos to explore the water and take in the scenery. There’s also several walking and cycling routes, as well as a children’s playground, a cafe, and a range of sports facilities, including tennis courts and a cricket pitch.

In addition to its stunning scenery, Dunorlan Park is also known for its historical significance. The park’s mansion house, which was built in the early 19th century, still stands today and is a fascinating example of the town’s rich history.

Royal Victoria Place

5. Shop in Royal Victoria Place

Royal Victoria Place is the main shopping centre in Tunbridge Wells. The site where it stands was originally home to a brewery and several other small businesses. However, in the late 1800s, the site was purchased by the local council, who planned to develop it into a new town centre.

The development of Royal Victoria Place took several years, with construction beginning in the early 1900s. It was officially opened in 1902 by Queen Victoria’s daughter, Princess Louise, and was named in honour of the queen.

Over the years, it has undergone several renovations and expansions, but has always remained a key part of Tunbridge Wells’ retail scene, attracting shoppers from all over Kent and beyond. Sadly a lot of shopping centres have seen many closures in recent years, but Royal Victoria Place is still thriving and well worth a visit.

Things to do in Tunbridge Wells - Mount Sion

6. Check out Mount Sion

Mount Sion is situated to the east of the town centre and is named after the biblical location where King David built his palace in Jerusalem. It’s characterised by steep hills, which provide panoramic views of the town and surrounding countryside.

The streets are very picturesque, and personally I love seeing different types of houses on my travels. The area features a mix of pretty properties, with many Victorian and Edwardian buildings still standing. A great photo opportunity!

Spa Valley Railway

7. Ride the Spa Valley Railway

The Spa Valley Railway is a heritage railway that runs for approximately 5 miles between the town of Tunbridge Wells and the village of Groombridge. It was originally built in the late 19th century as part of the Tunbridge Wells to Eridge line, which provided transport for commuters and tourists visiting the area’s spas and attractions. However, the line was closed in the 1980s, and a group of railway enthusiasts and volunteers set about restoring and reopening the line as a heritage railway.

Today, the Spa Valley Railway offers visitors a chance to experience the golden age of steam travel, with a range of steam and diesel locomotives pulling beautifully restored vintage carriages. The railway operates throughout the year, with special events and themed weekends taking place during holidays and other occasions.

The railway has several stations along the route, including Tunbridge Wells West, High Rocks, and Groombridge, which have been restored to their original Victorian and Edwardian appearances and feature period details, such as vintage posters and signs.

In addition to its regular passenger services, the Spa Valley Railway also offers a range of special experiences, such as dining trains, driver experience days, and behind-the-scenes tours of the railway’s engineering workshops. It’s definitely one of the top things to do in Tunbridge Wells for railway enthusiasts and anyone wanting an alternative way to experience the beauty of the Kentish countryside.

High Rocks

8. Discover the High Rocks

Just over a five minute drive from the centre of Tunbridge Wells is High Rocks . It’s a popular tourist attraction of natural sandstone rock formations that have been eroded over millions of years. The rocks themselves rise up to over 100 feet in height and are surrounded by woodland and parkland.

They’ve been a popular destination since the 18th century, and there are many stories and legends associated with the area, including tales of smugglers and highwaymen. The rocky terrain and secluded location would have made it an ideal place to hide contraband goods and evade the authorities.

In the early 19th century, a pathway was constructed through the rocks, making it easier for visitors to explore the area. In 1833, a public house was built on the site, which still stands today and is known as The High Rocks Inn. Further additions over the years have included a tea room and gift shop.

Haysden Country Park

9. Relax in Haysden Country Park

Haysden Country Park is situated on the banks of the River Medway and covers over 165 acres. One of its main features is the two large lakes, which offer a variety of fishing opportunities. The lakes are stocked with a range of fish, including carp, bream, and roach, and there are designated fishing platforms and jetties available for anglers.

Haysden Country Park also boasts a number of nature reserves and wildlife habitats, including wetlands and meadows, which are home to a variety of bird species, such as kingfishers, herons, and swans.

The park has a visitor centre, which provides information about the park’s history and amenities, as well as a café serving refreshments and light meals. The park is a peaceful and enjoyable escape from the hustle and bustle of nearby Tunbridge Wells and has much more of a countryside feel.

Scotney Castle National Trust

10. Marvel at Scotney Castle

A 20 minute drive from Tunbridge Wells is Scotney Castle, a stunning historic castle set in beautiful grounds. It is truly one of the most spectacular National Trust places I’ve visited – which is why I wrote a whole blog about it! I’d suggest having a read of it if you’re interested as it goes into a lot more detail about what you can see. One thing is for sure, if you have the time and the means to get there, it is definitely worth visiting if you have the time to drive a little further out of Tunbridge Wells.

Overall, Tunbridge Wells is a beautiful and historic town with plenty to offer visitors of all interests. Whether you love history, nature, shopping or dining, there are plenty of things to do in Tunbridge Wells! If you’ve been before, is there anywhere you’d add to the list? Let me know in the comments.

Why You Should Go To... Tunbridge Wells

Laura Reynolds

If Tunbridge Wells has entered your radar at all, it's probably due to the 'Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells' stereotype that's still hanging round from the 1950s. It's not all Middle England these days though, and it's well worth a visit.

When Southeastern's trains are playing ball, you can be in Tunbridge Wells from central London in under an hour. It's a town of two halves. Turn left out of the station and head up the hill for the more commercial part of town, including Royal Victoria Place shopping centre. Nothing wrong with that, but it's mainly an identikit town centre, largely replaceable with any other metropolis in the south-east

For the more interesting and historic parts of town though, head right out of the station, down towards the high street and Pantiles.

Why is it 'Royal'?

Officially known as Royal Tunbridge Wells, it's one of a few towns and boroughs in England to officially be given a royal title. It came from King Edward VII in 1909, partly to commemorate the fact that his mother, Queen Victoria, had loved the town so much.

More recently, Queen Elizabeth II's favourite chocolates were manufactured in a nondescript cul-de-sac in the town, until Charbonnel et Walker announced the closure of the factory in early 2018.

Note: Tunbridge Wells is not to be confused with nearby Tonbridge . The latter had the name first, taken from a local bridge, although it was originally spelt 'Tunbridge'. Tunbridge Wells gets its name from wells that sprung up from the ground in the area. In 1870, the spelling of Tonbridge was changed to avoid confusion between the two, though as locals of either will tell you, confusion is still rife among non-locals to this day. Oh, and one more thing: don't be asking anyone in Tunbridge Wells for directions to Waitrose. It's a point of contention among residents of the posher town that while Tonbridge has one, Tunbridge Wells has to do without.

What about that spa?

visit tunbridge wells

Tunbridge Wells is the only spa town in the south-east of England, but what does that mean? Don't be envisioning Bath-style Roman baths — you won't be needing your swimsuit around here these days, although wealthy people used to come from miles around to take to 'the waters' of those eponymous wells and springs.

These days, you can still visit the Chalybeate Spring on The Pantiles and be served some of the water by tour guides dressed in historical 'dipper' costumes. That said, if you'd worked in the (now-demolished) office block overlooking the spring when the pubs kick out on a Friday night, you might think twice about having a sip...

There were a total of seven springs in the surrounding area. The remains of another can be seen in Dunorlan Park, a large and popular outdoor space on the outskirts of town.

If you want any actual spa action though, the Spa Hotel is your best bet.

Visit The Pantiles

visit tunbridge wells

Probably the best known attraction in the town, The Pantiles is a pedestrianised street with shops and cafes, and plenty of splendid Georgian architecture. It gets its name from the square tiles with which is was originally paved, and most of the buildings are listed. It's been shortlisted as one of the best high streets in Great Britain on multiple occasions, and various films and TV shows have been shot around here, not forgetting Morrisons' 2007 Christmas advert starring Lulu.

Worth a wander, even if you're not looking in the shops.

Go frog hunting

Frog Lane in Tunbridge Wells, Kent

The picturesque back street of Frog Lane , jutting off the high street, is home to dozens of frog statues, placed there by residents eager for their street to live up to its name. Some crouch in doorways, others cartwheel on rooftops, and seasonal frogs occasionally make an appearance. Rumour has it that there are 52 of them, but we've only ever found 42. Find out more about Frog Lane , and see if you can do any better.

Live music in a former public toilet

visit tunbridge wells

Think London is the only place doing inventive things with long-closed lavatories ? Think again. The Forum is a grass roots music venue with an impressive line-up and a capacity of 250, inside a former public toilet block. The likes of Adele, Green Day, Ellie Goulding and Oasis all played here early in their careers, and more recently, Wolf Alice, Foals and Frank Turner have taken to the stage.

Board a steam train

visit tunbridge wells

Google Maps shows this place as Tunbridge Wells West station, but you can't catch the 08.09 to London Bridge. Instead, the Spa Valley Railway runs steam and heritage diesel trains between here and Eridge, via Tunbridge Wells and Groombridge. As well as regular train rides, look out for special trips, including kids' character days and dining events. The station itself is pretty photogenic, and includes ' Britain's smallest cinema '. But just wait until you get out into the countryside.

Go rock climbing

visit tunbridge wells

You won't find any mountains around Tunbridge Wells, but there's still rock climbing to be done. High Rocks is a group of  sandstone rocks just outside the town centre, all interlinked with bridges. For a small admission fee, you can wander among the National Monument. The chances of encountering a bride and groom in full wedding garb are high — it's a popular photography spot. Stop by the the High Rocks pub across the road afterwards for lunch or a drink.

Visit the Wetherspoon

visit tunbridge wells

Bear with us here. We know there's nothing special about a town with a Wetherspoon pub, but we do think The Opera House is a beaut. It looks grand from the outside, its greening dome visible from all over town. Inside, its theatrical history can still be seen — the stalls are still in situ above drinkers' heads, tables are laid out on the stage, and chandeliers still hang from the ceiling. The only London Wetherspoon to come close was Forest Hill's now-closed The Capitol. That carpet is a treat for Spoon's Carpets fanatics too and, even better, they have two bars open on busy nights. Wahey!

Where to eat and drink in Tunbridge Wells

visit tunbridge wells

Tunbridge Wells isn't short of places to eat and drink, from the usual chains to more exclusive haunts ( The Ivy's got an outpost here, and Thackeray's is pretty swanky...) and plenty of successful independents too.

From first-hand experience, we recommend Soprano , a tapas and wine bar on the High Street. Do book though — it's a tiny spot, with only a handful of tables.

The Barn is a good shout if you're just after a quick lunch — the pub part of the venue does a decent bar menu (the sausage baguettes are top notch), or seek out the upstairs restaurant for more formal dining. It's right next to the station, and has a decent garden if the weather's on your side.

If you want a genteel meal to match your surroundings (did we mention it's a royal town?), the afternoon tea at One Warwick Park is very good value, while the Spa is more of a push-the-boat-out experience.

Quirky historical features

St Marylebone parish apparently extends all the way to Tunbridge Wells pic.twitter.com/3fogUlJKAz — M@ (@mattfromlondon) July 7, 2018

Sharp eyed Londoners may be drawn to a certain pair of bollards , located on Crescent Road near Calverley Park. The black and white bollards, spotted by Londonist Editor-at-Large M@ Brown on a recent excursion, are marked 'St Mary Le Bone'. It's though they were transplanted here from London's Marylebone, although no-one knows the details.

visit tunbridge wells

This VR-marked penfold post box can be found on The Pantiles , and while Victorian-era post boxes aren't impossible to find, they're a lot rarer than our modern ER boxes.

The town's not short of a commemorative plaque or two either, serving them up in a variety of colours . Queen Victoria's stay at Hotel du Vin (probably wasn't called that then) is marked, as is Scout founder Robert Baden-Powell and novelist William Makepeace Thackeray (who's even got a restaurant named after him).   Not Sid Vicious though .

The architecture of Tunbridge Wells

visit tunbridge wells

Like many modern towns, Tunbridge Wells is a real architectural melting pot, from the beautiful Pantiles and splendour of Wetherspoons, to eyesore multi-storey car parks. If you're a bit of an architecture buff, there are a few buildings worth searching out.

Architect Decimus Burton, responsible for plenty of London buildings including London Zoo's listed giraffe house , dabbled in 'The Wells' too. Holy Trinity Church — now the Trinity Theatre, visible at the front of the picture at the top of this article — was one of his, as was the entirety of now-private residential road Calverley Park Crescent. In fact, he laid out the adjoining park, Calverley Grounds , the main green space in the town centre. (For those with kids, the recently updated playground in Calverley Grounds is superb, by the way.)

The Corn Exchange on The Pantiles is another building worth a look-see. Built as a theatre and later used as a shopping centre, it's now being turned into flats. According to a plaque on the building, before the county borders were moved when it was still a theatre, the stage was located in Sussex, but the auditorium was in Kent.

visit tunbridge wells

Opposite the railway station, next to Hoopers department store is the Great Hall Arcade, a rather fancy if petite (and dated) shopping arcade. These days it's home to a Sainsbury's and a furniture store, but it's worth peeking inside just to see the arcade itself. BBC Kent is also based there.

Things to do nearby

If you've exhausted the options of Tunbridge Wells town centre, there's plenty more going on nearby. Visit its namesake, Tonbridge , for a castle, river trips, ghost signs and street art. Penshurst Place is great for history buffs (with a lovely quaint village nearby). Check out our suggestions of places to go on a day trip from London for further suggestions.

Royal Tunbridge Wells is a town in west Kent on the border with East Sussex , in the South East of England .

Understand [ edit ]

Tunbridge Wells was founded in the 17th century following the discovery of the Chalybeate Spring in 1606. The waters from the spring were said to have restorative properties, and so Tunbridge Wells grew into a thriving spa resort town. Queen Victoria regularly travelled down from London to "take the waters", and in 1909 King Edward VII granted the town its "Royal" prefix (although this is rarely used by the inhabitants any more).

Get in [ edit ]

By car [ edit ].

Tunbridge Wells can be accessed from the north using the A21 trunk road, which runs as a dual carriageway for most of its length between the M25 and the outskirts of the town. The A21 continues south past Tunbridge Wells to Lamberhurst and Hastings .

The single carriageway A26 runs through the town centre, providing a link to Brighton and Lewes to the south, and Tonbridge and the A21 to the north.

To the west, the A264 provides connections to East Grinstead , Crawley and Gatwick Airport . To the east, the A264 becomes the A228 and links to Paddock Wood , Maidstone , Rochester and Strood .

By train [ edit ]

51.13 0.263 1 Tunbridge Wells station is in the town centre at the bottom of Mount Pleasant Road, close to the historic High Street and 5 minutes' walk from the Pantiles. It is on the London ( Charing Cross / Waterloo / London Bridge ) to Hastings route; trains are operated by Southeastern , ☏ +44 8457 48 49 50 .

London is between 40 and 55 minutes away, depending on whether the train is direct or a stopper service. A standard class off-peak return ticket to London is £13.20 adult; £6.60 child.

Other Kent towns such as Canterbury , Ashford and Maidstone can be reached by train by changing at Tonbridge (10 minutes by train from Tunbridge Wells).

Get around [ edit ]

  • Tunbridge Wells circular walk . It makes a great day's hiking trip especially if you bring a picnic along. There are many entry and exit points on the footpaths so although the entire circular walk is 27.5 mi (44.3 km) you can easily do a much shorter hike starting and ending in the town itself. Many of the walks take you through pretty villages, atmospheric woodlands, farmland (and through livestock fields), past churches, along streams/rivers and past lots of pubs. You can grab a copy of a map with details of the different walks in the tourist information centre in the Pantiles. There is lots of wildlife around – including birds, livestock, snakes and lizards (if you're lucky!) If you want to do some camping there are several camping areas on route. ( updated Dec 2023 )

Buy [ edit ].

The main shopping area of the town is centred around the Royal Victoria Place shopping centre, although there are shops throughout the town centre, with more independent shops located in and around the High Street. There is a good number of quality charity shops around Victoria Place and down to the High Street.

There is also rather a generic industrial estate on the edge of the town with a variety of big box stores.

Tunbridge Wells is a shoppers' paradise if you like designer clothes in a mellow setting with oodles of history.

All the major fast food chains are represented, mostly in the town centre, and the Royal Victoria Place shopping mall has a fairly large food court, although it is generally noisy and crowded.

Apart from some in Camden Road , most restaurants can be found in the centre, on Mount Pleasant and in the High Street area. There are also many pubs in and around Tunbridge Wells that offer good food. A long wait at Pizza Express and Carluccio's — booking is imperative.
