Old Louisville Holiday Home Tour

As part of our participation in the 2022 Old Louisville Holiday Home Tour, the Filson complied resources to further showcase the customs, decorations, and holiday cheer we incorporated into the Ferguson Mansion this Holiday season.

The Filson decorations were generously supported through In-Kind sponsorships and loans from the following community members and businesses:

Digs Home and Garden | Old Louisville Flower Studio

Lionel Operating Club | K&I Model Railroad Club | Belmar Flower Shop | Filson Volunteers

Jewish Community members: Jaye Bittner, Karen Strauss, Michael Hymson, and Marsha Roth

Filson Holiday Card Collection

The Filson Library has a collection of greeting cards, including some early Christmas cards published during the Victorian era. Kentucky women carefully collected these cards over the years and pasted them into scrapbooks; their compilations were eventually donated to The Filson. Follow the links below to learn more about the cards in our collection and the history of the Christmas card.

The History and Customs of Chanukah

In 2022, Chanukah begins on the evening of Sunday, December 18 and ends on the evening of Monday, December 26.  The Jewish calendar is lunisolar which means it syncs with both the lunar and solar cycles and dates change every year.  Chanukah usually falls in late November to December.

Chanukah (can be spelled many ways) is celebrated by the Jewish people for eight days to commemorate the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem in the second century BCE. Beginning in 167 BCE, a tiny army of Jews, led by a man called Judah Maccabee, rebelled against the Syrian-Greek army and won back Jerusalem, the Holy Temple and religious freedom. Beginning in 164 BCE they began to clean up the ruined Temple and restore it.  The Ner Tamid, the Eternal Light that was always on and located in front of the Holy Alter was damaged and needed to be relit.  However, the oil used was a special purified oil and they could only find enough for one day.  It miraculously lasted for eight days, enough time to get the oil they needed.  Chanukah has been celebrated since for eight days as the Festival of Lights.

The most important tradition associated with Chanukah is the lighting of candles in the Menorah . Each Menorah has nine candle holders.   On each of the eight nights a candle is lit, adding a new candle each night.  The ninth candle holder is called the Shamash, the servant light.  It is always lit first and used to light the other candles.  The candles are placed in the Menorah from right to left but are lit from left to right (lighting the newest addition first).

Because of the miracle that happened with oil, we celebrate by eating foods cooked in oil, mainly potato pancakes called latkes or donuts called sufganiyot.  The jelly filled donuts are a particular favorite in Israel.

Since Chanukah is not biblically ordained, the liturgy for the holiday is not well developed. It is a minor festival. Often it is celebrated with family and/or friends by having a celebratory   meal with the above foods, playing a game of dreidel, and exchanging gifts. It has also assumed a community visible aspect such as the one you are now attending.

The tradition of giving gifts of small amounts of money (known as Chanukah  Gelt) as well as nuts and fruit developed in Europe prior to the 20 th century.  Under the influence of Christmas, Chanukah has evolved into the central gift giving holiday.

Chanukah Traditions

Here is a simple recipe for potato latkes:

Potato Latkes (taken from The Keneseth Israel Sisterhood Cookbook)

6 potatoes

2 Tablespoons flour or matzo meal

1 teaspoon salt

Pepper to taste

1 small onion, grated

1 teaspoon baking powder

Grate potatoes and drain.  Add remaining ingredients and mix well.  Drop by tablespoon into at least ¼ inch deep hot fat.  Fry until brown on both sides.

Note:  add a pinch of baking soda to the potato and onion mixture.  This keeps the potatoes white.

Playing Dreidel

A dreidel is a four-sided top with a Hebrew letter on each side. Nun, Gimmel, Hey and Shin.  They stand for Nes Gadol Hayah Sham which means a great miracle happened here.  When the Greeks and Romans forbid the Jewish people to study, they would gather in small groups to learn.  A watchman would let them know when soldiers were approaching so that they could hide their Hebrew studies and play games with the dreidel.  It has become a symbol of freedom. Video of Dreidel Rules .

Victorian Era Decorations

The Filson’s Ferguson Mansion was completed in 1905.  In keeping with the period of the Mansion’s completion we have incorporated Victorian era decorations into our stop on the Old Louisville Holiday Home Tour.

In the Victorian era, homeowners decked their doorways, mantels and staircases with fresh greenery. Accents like ribbons, berries and fruits gave the greenery additional color.  Victorians decorated their evergreen trees with beads, tinsel, and paper ornaments while lighted candles provided the trees’ illumination.

Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol  established the importance of feasting with family and friends around the table as part of the holiday tradition.  The Cratchit family though of humble means centers their celebrations on a goose dinner.  The Victorian era ushered in this central feast to the Holiday festivities.  Tables would be decorated in the family’s finest dinnerware along with fruits and nuts.  Christmas Crackers were also introduced to the public at this time.

Take the Old Louisville Holiday Home Tour December 3 and 4

Old Louisville is one of the most popular neighborhoods in the entire city thanks to its beautiful architecture and gorgeous scenery. This year, see some of the breathtaking mansions in Old Louisville at the Holiday Home Tour all decked out in their holiday best.

Holiday Home Tour

The home tour takes up just four blocks of Old Louisville, so you don’t have to do a lot of walking to enjoy. All the homes you’ll see will be absolutely stunning and you’ll get to learn a little bit about each one. The historical and architectural details of each home will be discussed. The tour is a slow stroll that will take about two hours.

Old Louisville Holiday Home Tour 2022

There is plenty of parking, so feel free to pick a spot and get out. Be ready to walk. Wear your walking shoes and bring a bottle of water if you like. Tickets are $35 per person. Children 18 and under are free. Tours are held both days from noon to 5 pm starting at Central Park. This is one of the features of Old Louisville. But the homes are, as always, the true feature here…even when they aren’t decorated for the holiday season.

Touring Old Louisville

You can always extend the tour on your own and explore more of Old Louisville while you’re already in the neighborhood. There are more than a dozen blocks here and all of them feature incredible architecture, places that are going to make you stop and stare.

Victorian architecture rules the neighborhood, all custom designs that make each and every home here stand out. All the homes have their own distinct character and all the homes have hand-wrought details and little extras that set this architectural style apart. Fireplaces with marble mantles, hard-carved woodwork, amazing crown molding and interesting details everywhere.

These homes all have historic architecture but they definitely have newer features and upgrades inside. You get the best of the design and the best of modern living, too. See if Old Louisville is the best place for you to live this December. Who knows? Maybe next year, you’ll be decorating a home here for the holidays.

Find the Christmas spirit without the stress at these historic houses

As Christmas approaches and expectations mount, don’t fret if you don’t have a cozy fire crackling in the hearth and expertly wrapped gifts arranged just-so beneath a dazzling Christmas tree.

Just visit the places that do.

Many historic homes across Kentucky open their wreath-bedecked doors for the holidays to welcome visitors with special events and Christmas experiences that help stoke the holiday spirit with no added stress or skills required on your part.

A notable example is at Waveland State Historic Site in Lexington, its mansion completed in 1848 by Joseph Bryan, Daniel Boone’s grandnephew. The mansion is decorated each holiday season in Victorian-era splendor, Park Manager Charla Reed says.

One returning favorite is the live production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol with about 30 actors performing the play in the home’s true-to-life setting.

The iconic novel on which the play is based was written during the same era the house was built, “so the characters in the play are all dressed in that same time period and it just kind of captures you, not only to the story, but almost takes you back in time to a more simple life, a very enchanted story that puts you in the mood for the holiday,” Reed says.

Waveland also will host daytime and evening holiday teas, along with events for children hosted by Santa and Mrs. Claus.

So, maybe surgery doesn’t spring to mind when you think of Christmas. But after you visit McDowell House Museum in Danville, the connection will click.

In what some called a “Christmas miracle” on Christmas Day in 1809, Dr. Ephraim McDowell performed the world’s first abdominal surgery. McDowell’s home and office, built in two phases in the late 1700s and early 1800s, is now a National Historic Landmark and museum. Its staff celebrates the holidays—and McDowell’s achievement—each year, Assistant Director Lauren Clontz says.

The Garden Club of Danville decorates the museum festively, with special viewings December 5-15, and will host its 55th annual free holiday Green Tea December 8.

“The decorations are always lovely and it’s a beautiful home,” Clontz says. “Especially during the Green Tea, it’s a great time to come see it.”

In Princeton, Adsmore Museum is celebrating the holidays with many natural decorations that would have adorned the rooms in the Victorian/Edwardian-style estate in 1901.

Curator Andrew Bond says museum staff researched family documents detailing the natural greenery, holly, flowers, magnolia leaves, real fruits and vegetables, antique ornaments and stockings used in holiday decorating there more than a century ago.

A small orchestra will play during a December 14 candlelight tour and beeswax-dipped candles will be lit, he says, adding to the home’s grace and ambiance.

“It’s set up exactly to the details as best as we could recreate,” he says.

The only historic house museum in Bowling Green, Riverview at Hobson Grove, is an Italianate estate built in the Civil War era for Atwood Hobson, Executive Director Brooke Westcott Peterson says.

For the past 20 years or so, a free candlelight tour has been held as a gift to the community for its support. Visitors tour the home, which is decorated in Victorian style and lit with lamps and candles. This year’s event is December 14.

“There are docents in each room in period dress telling you a little bit of what could’ve happened in that particular room during a Victorian Christmas,” Peterson says.

Though it was named for the plentiful ash trees on the property, Ashland, the former home of famed Kentucky statesman Henry Clay, is known more for its Christmas trees when the holidays roll around.

Clay lived at Ashland from 1809 until his death in 1852, and the 18-room home has been lovingly restored by his descendants and open as a historic house museum since 1950.

old louisville christmas home tour 2022

Communications Manager Jennifer Kane says the annual Christmas festivities kick off December 7 with the illumination of the property, with carolers on hand and candlelight tours to follow.

“When it’s lit up along the outline of the mansion, along with the surrounding holly and pine trees and the smokehouse and all the outbuildings, it’s a nice spectacle,” she says. “We try to make it a fun gathering for the illumination when we turn the lights on for the first time and it’s always the first Saturday in December.”

Every Christmas has a different decorating theme, Kane says, and this year’s is “Christmas Lights and Inaugural Balls,” with decor in white, silver and red. A 9-foot decorated tree will once again be prominently placed in the upstairs window of the mansion, and gowns will be on display that were worn by Kentucky’s first ladies and former Gov. Martha Layne Collins.

The more the merrier: multihome tours

The East Row Historic District in Newport showcases a few of its 1,000 or so homes each year in the East Row Victorian Christmas Tour and Tea. It’s a perfect way to gear up for the holidays, says Kym Sutton, home coordinator for the tour, now celebrating its 25th anniversary.

This year’s event will be December 7-8, with 10 homes and additional points of interest. Guests can walk between stops or use shuttle bus services.

Sutton says whether homeowners decorate minimally or festoon every hall, wall and bannister, visitors inevitably come away with plenty of holiday decorating ideas.

There will be artisan vendors, break areas and refreshments on the tour, in addition to the Christmas Victorian High Tea, now in its 10th year. There will be three sittings each day.

“If someone can do the tour and tea it really rounds out the entire experience,” Sutton says. “You go through the old homes and see how they’re decorated and see how life was” in that era.

In the Old Louisville neighborhood, eight private residences and three historic buildings have been selected for this year’s 43rd annual Holiday Home Tour, December 7-8, Chairperson Susan C. Coleman Layman says.

The properties, within easy walking distance of one another, feature a mix of architectural styles and sizes, from mansions to small dwellings, she says. Accompanying events include a Victorian High Tea, an Evan Williams bourbon tasting and holiday gift boutique. A shuttle service is available, she says, adding that guests should plan a minimum of three hours for the tour experience.

“We hope you leave Old Louisville with a warm heart full of the holiday spirit, fond remembrances of your visit and a sense of appreciation for this outstanding community treasure,” Layman says.

Visitors from America and Western Europe might be surprised to discover that Russia celebrates Christmas on January 7th. That’s because the Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar. After the end of the Soviet Union, some Russians have begun celebrating Christmas on December 25 in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. But many Russians still observe the tradition of fasting on January 6th, breaking the fast with a large feast on Christmas Eve after the first star has appeared in the sky.

During the Soviet era, Christmas and religious traditions were banned in Russia. Santa Claus was replaced by Ded Moroz, or, Grandfather Frost, an old man with a long white beard who would bring gifts to children on New Year’s instead of Christmas. According to Russian tradition, Ded Moroz is accompanied by his granddaughter, Snegurochka, the Snowmaiden, who helps him on his journey to give presents to children.

Although the tradition of having a Christmas tree, known as a yolka in Russian, was also banned during Soviet times, Russians got around this by having New Year’s trees from which they hung homemade decorations. Today, the restrictions of the Soviet Union have faded into history, and during the Christmas season visitors to Russia can even purchase Christmas ornaments in the shape of matryoshka dolls, or religious icons that depict nativity scenes.

Heading counterclockwise around the Golden Ring this holiday season, northeast of Moscow, your first stop will most likely be the city of Vladimir, home to some of Russia’s most striking churches and cathedrals. The Vladimir region is known for its fine crystal. Stop by the Crystal, Lacquer Miniatures, and Embroidery Museum ( 2 Bolshaya Moskovskaya ) for an overview of traditional crafts before visiting the gift shop in the museum to browse the crystal selection. Vladimir Chic ( 2 Dvoryanskaya ) also sells local glass and crystal work.

Typical souvenirs are also for sale in Vladimir’s old town, especially by the Golden Gate, a triumphal arch and defensive tower that is one of the last-remaining parts of the wall that once surrounded ancient Vladimir and a sure stop on any tour of the Golden Ring.

Just 63 kilometers from Vladimir lays the nearby city of Gus-Khrustalny , the ‘Crystal Goose,’ also home to a rich glass and crystal making tradition. You can visit the glassmaking factory in Gus-Khrustalny and buy gifts ranging from plates and vases to decanters, or visit the outlet store back in Moscow ( 4 Ilyinka ) just east of the Kremlin.

North of Vladimir, you’ll arrive in Suzdal, one of the Golden Ring route’s more tranquil towns. Suzdal boasts a number of small bazaars and stands outside the main tourist sites where visitors can purchase local honey mead, called medovukha, along with traditional crafts, like a pair valenki, or Russian woolen boots, which make an ideal Christmas gift for friends and family back home. The shopping stands outside Suzdal’s Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life ( Ul. Pushkarskaya ) are also highly recommended. Market Square ( Torgovaya Pl ) houses a number of shops where visitors can search for arts and crafts.

Following the Golden Ring north of Suzdal, many tours will stop in the city of Kostroma, a former trading outpost on the immense Volga River. One of the city’s highlights is the Museum of Linen and Birchbark ( 38 Tereshkova ), where visitors can view exhibits on traditional Russian crafts woven from flax and bark. A gift shop in the basement sells tablecloths, napkins, baskets, linen dolls, and traditional clothing typical of the region.

South from Kostroma, stop in the city of Rostov-Veliky for enamel jewelry, a craft which allows artists to produce small paintings on metal that are then fired to produce a thin glaze over the image. Rostov became famous for its tradition of enamel work. Today, visitors can purchase rings, earrings, bracelets, brooches, and jewelry boxes in the gift shop of the Rostov Enamel factory ( 3 Borisoglebskoye Highway ).

While you’re in Rostov, visit the House of Crafts ( 16 Vtoraya Tolstovskaya Naberezhnaya ) for local pottery and the Souvenirs shop ( 5 Ul. Kamennyi Most ) for ushanka hats—Russian fur caps with earflaps—paintings, and samovars for tea lovers.

The last two stops on a tour of the Golden Ring are the cities of Pereslavl-Zalesskiy and Sergiev Posad. Pereslavl is most famous for its embroidery work, available at the Art Salon ( 12 Ul. Sovetskaya ) along with souvenirs made of wood and stone. Nearby Sergiev Posad is considered the place where Russia’s matryoshka dolls were first invented, and was the chief production center of the dolls before Soviet times. Visit the city’s Toy Museum ( 123 Pr. Krasny Armii ) to get a better sense of the birthplace of one of Russia’s most recognizable toys, then head over to the market alongside the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius—one of the city’s most important sites—to load up on matryoshka dolls, painted eggs, and icons before going home.

If you’ll be in the Golden Ring during New Years, the city of Vladimir hosts an impressive Christmas fair, with an iceskating rink and performances by local artists, in the main square ( Sobornaya Pl ). In most other Golden Ring cities you’ll find similar events in the center square as Christmas nears.

Most shops and markets in the Golden Ring are open year round. If you’re coming to Russia for a short period of time, whether in winter or summer, consider a trip to this stunning part of the country, and bring an extra bag if you plan to go shopping for Christmas gifts.
