Film Review: ‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’

Lasse Hallstrom returns to 'Chocolat' territory with this overlong serving of cinematic comfort food.

"The Hundred-Foot Journey"

Beef bourguignon or tandoori goat? Career success or family loyalty? You can actually have it all, according to “ The Hundred-Foot Journey ,” a culture-clash dramedy that presents itself as the most soothing brand of cinematic comfort food. As such, this genteel, overlong adaptation of Richard C. Morais’ 2010 novel about two rival restaurants operating in a sleepy French village is not without its pleasures — a high-energy score by A.R. Rahman, exquisite gastro-porn shot by Linus Sandgren, the winningly barbed chemistry of Helen Mirren and Om Puri — all prepared to exacting middlebrow specifications and ensured to go down as tastily and tastefully as possible. With the formidable backing of Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey (who produced with Juliet Blake), the DreamWorks concoction should cater to a broad array of arthouse appetites, particularly among those viewers who embraced the similar East-meets-West fusion cuisine of “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.”

If this Old World foodie fairy tale feels like an odd fit for screenwriter Steven Knight — best known for his gritty London underworld thrillers, and coming off an unusually adventurous directing debut with “Locke” — it’s worth recalling that his scripts for the much edgier “Eastern Promises” and “Dirty Pretty Things” were directly concerned with the hostilities bred in and around specific immigrant communities. Still, with its cozy, crowd-pleasing temperament, the new film represents all-too-familiar territory for director Lasse Hallstrom, whose superficially similar “Chocolat” offered up a smug little parable about the triumph of sensual indulgence and liberal tolerance over stifling small-town conformity. The culture war examined in “The Hundred-Foot Journey” is a bit less one-sided: It contrasts the heat and intensity of Indian cooking with the elegance and refinement of French haute cuisine, then balances the two with a feel-good lesson in ethnic harmony.

Popular on Variety

Fleeing a tragic uprising in their native Mumbai for a more idyllic life in Europe, the Kadam family, led by their proudly outspoken Papa (Puri), decide to open an Indian restaurant in the South of France. Alas, they soon find that they have merely abandoned one war zone for another, as their scrappy new Maison Mumbai, with its open-air seating and free-wandering chickens, is soon locked in a fierce competition with the classy Michelin-starred establishment located just 100 feet across the road. That restaurant, Le Saule Pleureur, is run by the widowed Madame Mallory (Mirren), an unyielding perfectionist and proud defender of Gallic tradition whose first glimpse of her brown-skinned neighbors prompts her to sniff, “Who are zees people?”

Zees people, little does she realize, include one of the most talented young cooks in Europe. That would be our protagonist, Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal), who soon begins a sly flirtation with Le Saule Pleureur’s beautiful sous chef, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon); she in turn introduces him to the venerable tradition of French cooking, which he becomes determined to master. The tension between these two characters, sexual as well as professional, is something the film keeps on a low simmer behind the more fiery confrontations between Papa and Madame Mallory, neither of whom is afraid to resort to all manner of competitive sabotage — whether it means sneakily buying up all the crayfish at the farmers market, or filing complaints with the mayor (Michel Blanc), humorously depicted as something of a gourmand himself.

Amid all this fun but childish oneupsmanship, Knight and Hallstrom gently milk all the expected stereotypes for humor and conflict: The French are snobs with their hoity-toity manners and expensive food, and they’re deeply affronted by the thrifty, tacky Indians with their colorful clothes and loud music. France’s ugly history of racial aggression and unrest, particularly relevant at the present moment, briefly punctures the film’s placid surface when local thugs attack and nearly burn down Maison Mumbai. But rather than lighting a fuse, this trauma is what begins to unite the Kadams and Madame Mallory, who soon realizes that Hassan is not only an exceptional cook, especially when armed with his family’s prized spice box, but possibly the missing ingredient that could earn Le Saule Pleureur its second Michelin star.

And so “The Hundred-Foot Journey” becomes a story in which cultural opposites not only learn to coexist, but are in fact triumphantly and even romantically reconciled. It may be set in France, but really, it could be taking place in any movie-manufactured fantasyland where enemies become the best of friends, and an embittered old shrew turns out to have a heart of gold (and, as Papa appreciatively notes, looks rather fetching beneath the glow of computer-generated Bastille Day fireworks). Morais’ novel was described by the New York Times’ Ligaya Mishan as a hybrid of “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Ratatouille,” and Hallstrom seems to have taken that Hollywood formulation to heart: Like “Slumdog,” the film is an underdog story set to the infectious backbeat of Rahman’s music (fun fact: Knight created the original British version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”), and like “Ratatouille,” it brings us into an irresistible world of culinary sophistication and features gorgeous nighttime views of Paris, where Hassan eventually arrives in search of his destiny.

Where the film really overreaches is its attempt to reproduce “Ratatouille’s” glorious Proustian moment, that perfect bite of food that induces a heartbreaking recollection of childhood. This wannabe epiphany arrives deep into a draggy third act, during which the script and the handsome Dayal struggle to give Hassan some semblance of a conflicted inner life, but the character, much like his meteoric rise to the top ranks of international chefdom, remains something of a sketch. It’s the older, top-billed leads who manage the heavy lifting: Though she’s encumbered somewhat by her French accent, Mirren is superb at both projecting an air of hauteur and expressing the vulnerability beneath it, and she brings out a similar mix of pride and feeling in Puri’s Papa, an excellent sparring partner whose stubbornness and drive to succeed never come at the expense of his love for his family.

Shot on 35mm in luminous, sun-dappled tones in the French village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val (with some second-unit work in India), and handsomely appointed by production designer David Gropman and costume designer Pierre-Yves Gayraud, the film is also distinguished by its mouth-watering visual buffet, whether lingering on vats of steaming red curry or a perfectly plated pigeon with truffles. This is, no question, an easy picture to succumb to — perhaps too easy, if its tidy narrative symmetries and its belief in the socially redemptive power of pleasure are any indication. Scrumptious as it all is, it hurts to watch chefs so committed to excellence in a movie so content to settle for attractive mediocrity.

Absolutely fantastic!

Excellent clean movie, what's the story.

After unrest drives them away from their native India to London, Hassan (Manish Dayal) and his family take to the road and find themselves stranded when their brakes fail in a small French town. Hassan's father decides it's just the spot to open an Indian restaurant. Directly across the street, Madame Mallory ( Helen Mirren ) runs another restaurant, one with a long, proud tradition of fine French dining -- and possessed of a famed Michelin star. She's not happy with her new neighbors and declares war on their rival eatery. Meanwhile, Hassan starts to fall for Marguerite, the sous chef in Mallory's kitchen, who teaches him the basics of French cuisine.

Is It Any Good?

Like beef bourguignon, one of the many dishes filmed so delectably in this production, THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY is a crowd-pleasing classic. The family story, told with empathy and love here, is its base; the food scenes that are odes to the art of cooking, framed through a cross-cultural prism, are its mea; and the gorgeous French countryside and melodic Indian music are its garnish. It's a delight to watch, especially because of the cast.

But, also just like beef bourguignon, it's not particularly inventive, even if the story centers around a young man's ingenuity in the kitchen. You know what you're getting. A true master chef -- as director Lasse Hallstrom has revealed himself to be in many previous turns at the helm -- would take a classic and turn it into something transcendent, adding elements that transform, rather than just substituting one ingredient (the location, perhaps) for another and hoping it feels different. Still, the film is big-hearted and filling enough -- so filling that it runs too long, actually -- to be a pleasant enough cinematic meal.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about bias. What does Madame Mallory think about Hassan and his family when she first meets them? Why? How do her opinions change?

Why are movies about food and cooking so appealing? How does this one compare to others you've seen?

If films about the culinary arts revolved around the same strictures to obtain something like a Michelin star rating, The Hundred-Foot Journey would always and forever be a big fat zero.

For foodies and folks looking for the cinematic version of a poolside paperback, THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY delivers. If you're seeking something with a little artistic nutrition, you'll need to look elsewhere.

Overall, The Hundred-Foot Journey is not a bad dish, but considering its rich ingredients, it still lacks a bit of spice.

Prompted by all the hubbub surrounding this summer’s lackluster box office reports, someone recently told me that these days, many kids aren’t released from school until June. Sometimes the middle of June. Sometimes it’s even later! What — I ask you, dear readers — the fuck? Never in my young life did I hear the final bell of the school year any later than mid-May, and while I’ve come to miss those scholarly days (and appreciate a thorough, honest education), I can’t help but feel for every child cooped up as the days get longer, the nights get warmer, and the television gets worse.

OK, getting to the subject at hand, there’s actually plenty to distract students among TV’s June releases, but by and large, this month marks the end of the industry’s most ambitious offerings (at least until September or so). With the Emmy cutoff on May 31st — only schools and the TV Academy still abide by the fall-to-spring calendar year — most networks make sure their best titles debut early enough to qualify for a summer awards run, Netflix included.

Well, kind of. Last month saw the launch of a few gold-digging titles. Benedict Cumberbatch is surely hungry for another Emmy in “Eric,” Jeff Daniels goes as big as he can for “A Man in Full,” and John Mulaney may have the best shot of the (sack lunch) bunch with the endearingly odd, strange yet sharp “Everybody’s in L.A.” But these aren’t exactly frontrunners. They’re not even Netflix’s frontrunners, which include “The Crown” (released in November), “The Gentlemen” (March), and “Ripley” (April) / surprise contender, “Baby Reindeer” (March). The question then becomes: Is Netflix changing awards strategy and dropping its best titles a little earlier, or is the streamer simply less interested in ambitious awards-bait (and more interested in gourmet cheeseburgers)?

Netflix’s June lineup points toward the latter. Highlighted by the second half of “Bridgerton” Season 3 — which the streamer chose not to release in time for Emmy contention — the seven best new shows include a third season of a young-adult fantasy (which is fine! but not boundary-pushing) and two acquired titles with infamous final seasons. Heck, they aren’t even all shows. One’s a movie! I’m sorry, but my standards as a critic only allow me to stick to my chosen medium for so long. When faced with recommending “NCIS” Season 16 or a bonafide cinematic masterpiece, I’m gonna go with the film! You deserve it, readers. You deserve the best.

Down months happen. Times change. There’s still a ton to watch, and Netflix’s algorithm for success is doing its job. Maybe that’s bad for theaters, maybe it’s even bad for TV fans seeking the next great original series. But it’s been good business. So perhaps the best way to look at Netflix’s ho-hum June schedule is that it should help keep attention elsewhere, be it on outside activities or that last bit of schoolwork. Netflix, at least, is doing its part for the students.

1. ‘Bridgerton’ Season 3, Part 2

Bridgerton. (L to R) Luke Newton as Colin Bridgerton, Nicola Coughlan as Penelope Featherington in episode 10 of Bridgerton. Cr. Courtesy of Netflix © 2023

Release Date: Thursday, June 13  Showrunner: Jess Brownell  Executive Producers: Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, Tom Verica, Chris Van Dusen  Cast: Nicola Coughlan, Luke Newton, Luke Thompson, Golda Rosheuvel, Adjoa Andoh, Ruth Gemmell, Lorraine Ashbourne, Hannah Dodd, Simone Ashely, Jonathan Bailey, Harriet Cains, Bessie Carter, Jessica Madsen, Florence Hunt, Martins Imhangbe, Will Tilston, Polly Walker, Julie Andrews, Hugh Sachs, Emma Naomi, Kathryn Drysdale  Format: 4 hourlong episodes  Best Reason to Watch: We already went over this last month , when “Bridgerton” Season 3, Part 1 was released, and if those episodes weren’t enough motivation to keep watching, perhaps the show’s pursuit of three consecutive seasons in Netflix’s Top 10 most watched programs could fuel you to finish? And for those of you already hooked: May I usher you toward “Bridgerton” week ?

2. ‘Sweet Tooth’ Season 3

Sweet Tooth. (L to R) Nonso Anozie as Jepperd, Christian Convery as Gus, Naledi Murray as Wendy, Stefania LaVie Owen as Becky in episode 301 of Sweet Tooth. Cr. Matt Klitscher/Netflix © 2023

Release Date: Thursday, June 6  Showrunner: Jim Mickle  Cast: Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, Naledi Murray, Stefania LaVie Owen, Amy Seimetz, Cara Gee, Ayazhan Dalabayeva, Kelly Marie Tran  Format: 8 hourlong episodes  Best Reason to Watch: “Sweet Tooth,” a fantasy-adventure series for young adults, started off with a warm, endearing first season and has largely kept the good vibes going since. Gus (Christian Convery) is a “hybrid deer-boy” traveling across a postapocalyptic American landscape in hopes of finding his mother, Birdie (Amy Seimetz). Helping him out is the former football star turned amiable protector, Jepperd (Nonso Anozie), and a rag-tag group of friends they’ve gathered along the way. Season 3 brings their search to Alaska, where Birdie has been conducting research to identify where the plague that wiped out most of the population came from – and, of course, how to cure it. This being the final season, I’m guessing we’ll get some answers.

3. ‘My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman’

My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman. (L to R) Charles Barkley, David Letterman in My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman. Cr. Courtesy of Netflix © 2024

Release Date: Wednesday, June 12   Cast: David Letterman, Miley Cyrus, Charles Barkley  Format: 2 hourlong episodes  Best Reason to Watch: In between Seasons 4 and 5, Letterman aired two specials: one with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and another with John Mulaney. Now he’s officially back with Season 5, consisting of two more deep-diving conversations between the long-time “Late Night” host and Miley Cyrus, who won two Grammys in February, and Charles Barkley, who may be losing his beloved basketball show “Inside the NBA.” Whatever they decide to talk about, it should be entertaining.

4. ‘America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders’

100ft journey netflix

Release Date: Thursday, June 20  Creator: Greg Whiteley   Director: Kelli Finglass  Format: 7 hourlong episodes   Best Reason to Watch: Greg Whiteley. Even if you don’t know the name, you likely know his work. The director is behind two of Netflix’s best documentary series, “Cheer” and “Last Chance U.” Now, he’s turning his attention to one of the most famous shows in sports: the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. “America’s Sweethearts” goes behind-the-scenes with the squad to show what it takes to make the grade and what drives each dancer to a life in the iconic blue-and-white uniforms to begin with.

5. ‘Dexter’ Seasons 1-8

Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan and Jennifer Carpenter as Debra Morgan in Dexter (Season 8, episode 12) - Photo: Randy Tepper/Showtime - Photo ID: Dexter_812_1076

Release Date: Wednesday, June 19  Developed by: James Manos Jr.  Showrunner: Clyde Phillips  Cast: Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas, James Remar, Lauren Velez, Julie Benz  Format: 96 hourlong episodes  Best Reason to Watch: The best reason to watch the first four seasons of “Dexter” is different than the best reason to watch the entirety of “Dexter.” Speaking to the initial merits of the original Showtime series, there’s plenty to admire and enjoy, whether it’s the cheeky sense of humor, sun-kissed Floridian setting, or plenty of sparkling (sweaty?) performances. The twists and turns of each season have solid payoffs… until they don’t, which is why the only reason I can give for completing all eight available seasons is if you’re working on the Showtime prequel series and need to figure out where things went wrong. After all, the ending provided here isn’t the actual end. To see that, you’ll need to subscribe to Paramount+ with Showtime and click on “Dexter: New Blood.”

6. ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Seasons 1-9

“Weekend at Barney’s” -- When Ted (Josh Radnor, center) and Jeanette break up, Barney (Neil Patrick Harris, right) tries to help him land a new girl by using the infamous playbook Robin thought he had destroyed, on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, Monday, Feb. 25 (8:00-8:30 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Also pictured: Jason Segel (left) Photo: Ron P. Jaffe/Fox ©2013 Fox Television. All Rights Reserved.

Release Date: Monday, June 3  Creators: Carter Bays, Craig Thomas   Cast: Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, Cristin Milioti, Bob Saget (narrator)  Format: 208 half-hour episodes  Best Reason to Watch: Wow, Netflix is turning up the heat this June by doubling down on once-beloved shows with deeply unsatisfying endings . Is there plenty to enjoy in “How I Met Your Mother,” an oft-charming and inventive network sitcom? Absolutely. Is it also a little bit difficult to go back, knowing the awkward ending and oft-confounding twists and turns it takes to get there? Also, yes. If you know when to cut bait on a binge, then go nuts. Just partake responsibly.

7. ‘Carol’

ROONEY MARA and CATE BLANCHETT star in CAROL

Director: Todd Haynes Writer: Phyllis Nagy Cast: Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Kyle Chandler, Sarah Paulson, Jake Lacy, John Magaro, Cory Michael Smith, Carrie Brownstein  Format: 118 minutes (feature film)  Best Reason to Watch: Christmas in… June? Why not! While the seventh slot on this list could have easily gone to the many excellent “30 for 30” specials arriving on Netflix this month, IndieWire is bound by law to acknowledge whenever “Carol” is available to the streaming masses. By now, you should have the Blu-ray, but hey, there’s no bad way – or time – to watch Todd Haynes’ masterpiece.

Tennis' Rafael Nadal Gives Rare Insight Into His Life as a New Dad

Tennis' rafael nadal, the 22-time grand slam winner, gave an inside look into his fatherhood journey ahead of his march 3 match against fellow spaniard carlos alcaraz in the netflix slam..

Fatherhood is an easy ace for   Rafael Nadal .

The 22-time Grand Slam winner and his wife  Maria Francisca Perello  welcomed their first child, a son, in October 2022. And though he's mastered many shots and perfected quite the serve, fatherhood is still teaching Rafael something new every day.

"Everything surprises you because everything is new," he told E! News during a press conference ahead of The Netflix Slam on March 3. "Especially the first kid you have, everything is 100 percent new for my wife and for me. So you learn everyday, and every day is unexpected."

Yet despite the learning curve, becoming a parent is an adventure the 37-year-old always wanted to have in his playbook.

"I have always been a kids guy," he reflected. "I always enjoyed spending time with the kids, I had plenty of smaller cousins than me so I had a lot of fun with them when they were babies."

And for the Spanish player—whose career is often surrounded by questions of retirement these days—he's focused on enjoying this stage of his life, tennis , diapers and all.

"I can say nothing negative," he added. "I am lucky that for the moment the baby is doing very well. We are happy."

But while Rafael is mastering the game of fatherhood, there is another who has spent a lifetime learning from his professional career: fellow Spaniard and Rafael's opponent during the March 3 exhibition match,  Carlos Alcaraz.

In fact for the 20-year-old, who is currently ranked number two in the world, Rafael's tenacity on the court has served as one of his greatest inspirations.

"For me, every time that he stepped on the court," Carlos said of Rafael, "[it's been] that fighting spirit. That he never gives up on the ball, and the way he finds solutions when things are not going well."

He added, "I think that's incredible, and I think that's the thing I learned from him and tried to put it in my own way."

And the matchup between the two Spanish players promises to be, likewise, nothing short of incredible.

Take it from  Andre Agassi —another tennis player whose career became that of legend—one of the commentators for the match which is streaming live from his hometown of Las Vegas.

"It's going to be a good one, because what we're seeing is amazing," Andre told E! News ahead of the big game. "You got two of the greats, a historical legend and future legend of the game, meeting at a really interesting time in their career. And so I can't think of a better way to introduce tennis to Vegas."

So be sure not to miss The Netflix Slam, which streams live on the platform at 12:30 p.m. PT / 3:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 3.

‘Security,’ a Mall Movie Starring Antonio Banderas, Refuses To Vacate The Netflix Top 10

Where to stream:.

  • Security (2017)
  • Antonio Banderas

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Journey to Bethlehem’ on Netflix, Where The Nativity Story Meets ‘Glee’

Is ‘journey to bethlehem’ streaming on netflix or prime video, ‘indiana jones and the dial of destiny’ comes to digital, but when will it be on disney+, gina rodriguez and zachary levi take over for carla gugino and antonio banderas in ‘spy kids: armageddon’ reboot.

Do you recall the last time you saw a contemporary-set movie with a major scene in a mall? Though there are still plenty of malls in America (and of America ), in many areas they’re not exactly the bustling retail hubs they once were, reflected in the fact that they tend to appear in movies most prominently to broadly evoke the 1980s, especially in superhero movies like Wonder Woman 1984 (which opens on a Superman II -esque mall scene) or X-Men: Apocalypse (which cut down a longer mall montage for time, much to fans’ dismay). For the most part, this is the kind of gradual, society-reflecting shift that might not gather much notice; mall scenes tended to be most prominent in teen movies, anyway. But maybe viewers have been feeling that absence more acutely than anyone expected, because the little-known 2017 action thriller Security , set almost entirely inside a mall, has vaulted into the Netflix Top 10 .

It’s not unusual for a straightforward action movie with a recognizable brand-name lead – in this case, Antonio Banderas, with a side of disengaged Ben Kingsley – to make a bigger splash on Netflix than it did in theaters. But Security is notable because this isn’t a forgotten post-millennial theatrical release finding a second life as newly licensed streamer content, just as movies did on cable in the past. Despite its mall setting, the movie didn’t ride the brief, strange wave of mall-cop movies that appeared in theaters back in 2009; it’s a 2017 movie that was barely released in theaters at all. In fact, it hit Netflix its year of release, though it’s unclear as to whether it’s been on the service the whole time, virtually undiscovered. It creates a sensation not unlike walking through your nearest mall for the first time in a while: Wait, was this always here?

As far as mall movies go, Security isn’t an especially impressive evocation of shiny, centralized consumer culture. It’s basically a straight-faced cross between those 2009 mall comedies, Paul Blart: Mall Cop and Observe and Report . From Blart , it takes the general idea of putting a Die Hard situation in a shopping center, with a bunch of gun-toting villains matched against mall-employee underdogs. It also (probably unintentionally) inverts Observe , in that instead of a security guard who is dangerously overzealous and incompetent in his thwarted desire to be a real cop, the movie gives us Eddie Deacon (Banderas), an overqualified military man who takes a mall-security gig out of desperation. He’s then forced into action when a young girl (Katherine Mary de la Rocha), a witness in an organized crime case, seeks refuge in the mall after-hours, following an ambush on the U.S. Marshals escorting her to the trial.

So yeah, Die Hard ’s limited-location cat-and-mouse with a few of Taken ’s older-guy-ass-kicking-in-defense-of-the-youth moves. The most surprising thing about Security is how it veers into mall-cop antics introducing the rest of the security team – the dopey, overconfident leader; the nerdy coward; the mouthy but tough broad; the earnestly helpful guy – and then goes on to treat those characters with relative dignity, rather than turning them into canon fodder. I mean, they are that, too; Banderas certainly isn’t the one who’s going to get killed in the first hour to raise the stakes. But there’s something weirdly novel about watching sitcom-level characters actually figure out how to fortify the defenses in their workplace, and eliminates the slasher-movie efficiency that action heroes sometimes take on when they become one-man armies.

Security is watchable, forgettable, mostly predictable stuff, but the area where it most noticeably falls down is finding some kind of point of view on an institution that hasn’t been thriving in recent years. Paul Blart puts its blinders on, turning the mall into a sitcom playground, subject of semi-ironic but lovingly photographed neat stuff, befitting the product-placement-loving Happy Madison productions. (It’s a shock that Adam Sandler hasn’t yet produced a movie where a C-list comedian gets sucked into a catalog.) Observe and Report relocates Taxi Driver from the streets of New York to the mall corridors of New Mexico, finding them just as hospitable a cesspool to pollute the human psyche. (Weirdly, Security implies that Eddie, like Seth Rogen’s character in Observe and Report , might have problems with his psych evaluation, though Eddie seems relatively restrained for a lone-wolf action hero.)

Perhaps the most famous mall-set movie, the original Dawn of the Dead from 1978, is a landmark satire of consumerist instincts. By comparison, Security is more like the Dawn of the Dead from 2004, a mall movie with nothing to say about its setting beyond its logistical advantages when fighting off a pack of marauding bad guys (be they zombies or utterly expendable henchmen). This one doesn’t even use a particularly convincing mall set; the exterior shots look much bigger than the interiors, the ceilings don’t seem to be high enough, and the characters seem to be constantly rounding the same handful of corners. There’s no sense of whether this is a mall where lots of people go, a mall where people used to go, or something on the downslope in between the two.

Of course, that doesn’t much affect the story of Antonio Banderas dispatching heavily armed gang members, or his colleagues forging makeshift weapons from the raw materials of commerce. Or at least, not beyond the subtext that the mall-security employees are actually being called upon to protect something real, rather than the illusion of community. Lots of activity that once happened at malls has now been transferred online – not just shopping, but the capturing of cultural ephemera not designed to have much lasting impact beyond momentary distraction. In the mall of Netflix, Security feels like something they found in the back and were surprised to see belatedly flying off the shelves.

Netflix has renewed Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar" for season 2, a month after the big-budget period drama series premiered on the streamer.

In a post on X, Netflix and Bhansali Production shared the announcement with a flash mob dance at Mumbai's Carter Road dressed in anarkalis and ghungroos, and danced to a medley of songs such as "Sakal Ban" and "Tilasmi Baahein" from the series. The post captioned, “Mehfil phir se jamegi, Heeramandi: Season 2 jo aa raha hai."

In the first season, the series starring Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Richa Chadha, and Sharmin Segal revolved around courtesans who wielded a lot of power and influence during India's freedom struggle.

Expressing gratitude, Bhansali said, “I'm blessed by the love and appreciation for 'Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar'. It's been a joy to see the show resonate with audiences worldwide, and I couldn't have asked for a better partner than Netflix. I'm happy to announce that we'll be back with season 2."

Giving some details on Season 2 of Heeramandi, Bansali told Variety that, “In 'Heeramandi 2,' the women now come from Lahore to the film world. They leave Lahore after the partition and most of them settle in the Mumbai film industry or Kolkata film industry. So that journey in the bazaar remains the same. They still have to dance and sing, but this time for the producers and not for the nawabs. So that's the second season we are planning, let's see where it goes."

Season 1 of "Heeramandi" was praised for its drama, lavish sets, and intricately crafted clothes, however, some also called out the series for romanticising brothels, and linguistic inaccuracies and also slammed Sharmin Segal for her acting. Following the announcement of season 2, internet users expressed varied opinions, with some showing enthusiasm while others questioned its necessity.
