Port Zadar cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Zadar, Croatia. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Zadar is an Adriatic Sea cruise port in Croatia. By population (around 75,000) the city is ranked the country's 5th largest - after Zagreb (capital), Split, Rijeka, and Osijek . Other major Croatian passenger ports (cruise and ferry) are Dubrovnik , Split , Rijeka , Sibenik .

In 2018, the cruise port (Luka Zadar Gazenica, locode HRZAD) handled around 137,000 passengers. Ferries connect Zadar with Ancona (Italy), via 7 crossings weekly (travel time 6 hours). Italy-Croatia routes are operated by the company Jadrolinija, with departures from Ancona (to Zadar and Split) and from Bari (to Dubrovnik).

Zadar (called Zader by the Romans) lies sheltered by offshore isles on Croatia's central coast, approx 120 km (75 mi) to the north of Split. Zadar was established as a Roman colony and was among the largest and most important towns of the Roman Empire's Dalmatia province.

Since April 2019, a new daily cruiseferry service links the Dalmatian seaside resorts and port cities Split and Zadar via Sibenik. The new route provides domestic and international tourists (arriving by planes in Zadar and Split) a more picturesque sea-travel alternative. The fast-ferry service is provided by the company ENVIRA Sibenik. The ferryboat leaves Split at 9 am, departs from Sibenik at 10:35 am, and arrives in Zadar at 0:40 pm. The return crossing leaves Zadar at 5:30 pm, departs from Sibenik at 7:35 pm, and arrives in Split at 9:10 pm.

Most cruise ships to Zadar dock at Travel Port Gazenica (to the southeast of Multi-Port Racunalni).

As a shore excursion option from Zadar, cruise tourists are offered guided bus tours to Krka National Park.

Zadar cruise terminal

In mid-September 2018, Global Ports Holding/GPH (world's largest independent cruise port operator) and Zadar International Port Operations (via Gazenica's port authority company) signed a 20-year concession agreement (until 2038) for operating rights of the cruise port Gazenica.

The agreement follows the March 19 (2018) Zadar Port Authority's announcement to grant a concession to GPH subject to a final agreement. Under this agreement, GPH manages all Gazenica cruise port operations in the period 2018-2038. The concession includes one ferry terminal (all Ro-Ro services), one cruise ship terminal (all passenger services), all passenger and vehicles services. A commercial area (sized 2400 m2 / 25,840 ft2) is also part of the deal, with leasable retail and office space.

Cruise port's infrastructure includes one large pier (total length 1170 m / 3840 ft) and max draft 13 m (43 ft).

The new Gazenica Cruise Terminal was officially inaugurated on April 24, 2019. The passenger terminal has a 2-story building with interior space sized approx 20,000 m2 (215,300 ft2) and provides all standard services relevant for international and domestic passenger shipping. Building's construction started in 2016. Project's total cost was ~EUR 27 million (~USD 30 M).

Zadar Croatia Port Guide

Zadar’s notoriety is slowly growing. A necessary, comprehensive ferry system connects Croatia with the Adriatic islands nearby, and more cruises stop in Zadar each passing year. Zadar’s centuries-long history of occupations before it became part of Croatia makes it a melting pot of types of architecture, home to scattered Roman ruins and also unusual modern art installations like the waterfront Sea Organ. While on your cruise to Zadar, Croatia, stop into Old Town for delicious eats or a coffee break, or take a walking tour of the city’s many ancient churches. History buffs will love the Zadar Archaeological Museum, and kids will adore the Sun Salutation exhibit at the waterfront.

Zadar is beautiful but quirky, historic yet modern, conveniently in proximity to Saharun Beach for swimming or Paklenica National Park for challenging hiking and climbing. The area could be disjointed or incohesive, but it’s not. It’s clear that Zadar is a place where people really live, not just pass through or vacation in, and that makes it special in its own right. While on your Mediterranean cruise , you’ll appreciate how Zadar manages to be uncrowded, unfussy, and unforgettable all at once.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to zadar.

Less crowded than Dubrovnik’s Old Town, you’ll discover this gem of a promenade sets Zadar apart. There are cafes, shops, and three sides of fortress walls dating back to Venetian occupation in the 16th century. Meander around Old Town for a while and you’ll immediately understand why hurrying just doesn’t suit this Croatian town.

Saharun Beach

One of Croatia’s most beautiful, off-the-beaten-path beaches is just a ferry ride from Zadar. Unlike other beaches along the Dalmation coast, Saharun has unusually white sand and waters that seem a little too turquoise to be real. Take a swim, sunbathe on the beach, or collect shells as you walk the shore.

The Sea Organ (Morske Orgulje)

It’s one of the quirkiest attractions you’ll ever see. The Sea Organ along the waterfront of Zadar is an art installation that makes sound when its underwater pipes take in water from incoming waves. When the water is shallow, it sounds like a sigh. When the waves are powerful, so is the Sea Organ’s “music.” Words don’t fully encapsulate the beauty of the experience, so don’t miss it on your Zadar cruise.

Foodies will love a day trip to Pag Island, where they can taste-test the island’s signature Pag cheese. It’s one of Croatia’s most famous foods. Strangely, Pag Island’s crater-filled landscape could fool you for the moon. It’s dramatic and a little intimidating, but a stop at this island will charm you with its devotion to cheese, wine, and excellent food. Head into the village of Novalja for a taste of vibrant nightlife.

Zadar Cathedral

This Romanesque, Gothic cathedral has some huge bragging rights—it’s the largest church in the entirety of the region of Dalmatia. After near destruction during World War II, the cathedral has seen been restored as one of Zadar’s most visited historic sites. Make the bell tower climb for unbeatable views of Zadar from the summit.

Learn More About Zadar Shore Excursions

Top things to do in zadar, head to the zadar archaeological museum.

Zadar’s prehistoric history and its strong Roman influence during various occupations is beautifully honored at the Zadar Archaeological Museum. Tickets are only 30 KN and free for kids. Head into the museum for an indoor, air-conditioned adventure if you need a break from exploring Old Town.

Peer Into the Museum of Ancient Glass

Come to the Museum of Ancient Glass in the morning for glass-blowing demonstrations or to watch bead-making. You’ll be amazed by the sheer volume of glass that has been miraculously preserved despite Zadar’s turbulent history. This Museum is a quick pit stop, and a must for anyone wishing to learn more about Roman influence on this corner of Croatia.

Catch the Sunset from the Waterfront

After you’ve seen the Sun Salutation and heard the Sea Organ on the waterfront, stay for a pink-and-orange Croatian sunset unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Stick around a bit longer, and the Sun Salutation monument will light up once night has officially fallen. A perfect way to rest and unhurriedly soak up Zadar.

Day Trip to Paklenica National Park

If you’re itching to get outside while on your cruise to Zadar, Croatia, it’s just a 45 minute drive from Zadar to Paklenica National Park. Head northeast deeper into Croatia for hiking trails, steep canyons, and opportunities for cycling, too. Climbers, rejoice! Paklenica National Park is a climber’s paradise, and one of the most visited climbing sites in all of Croatia.

See 7 Waterfalls at Krka National Park

Discover this national treasure while you’re on your Zadar cruise. After all, it’s only an hour’s drive from Zadar to Krka National Park. Go hiking on along the Roški Slap, where you can swim in the designated areas near the waterfalls. Take the walking trails to reach the cascading waterfalls. Some of the ruins within the park date back to Roman occupation centuries earlier. The area is immaculately kept, showing Southern Croatia’s true beauty along every footpath.

You might not be in Italy, but Restaurant Bruschetta sure does make you feel like you are, though with a Croatian twist. Restaurant Bruschetta serves its namesake dish—bruschetta—as well. Don’t miss their octopus pulled straight from the Adriatic and fried into calamari.

Vitlov Chocolate

Address: Ulica Borelli 7, Zadar 23000, Croatia

Address: Convallis d.o.o., Široka ulica 22, 23000 Zadar

Located just steps from the Zadar Archaeological Museum and the Church of St. Donatus, stop in Groppo after your tours to fill back up before you continue exploring. Squid, sea-bass, scampi, and more fresh from the Adriatic, octopus carpaccio, and the Dalmatian lamb are highlights for many diners.

Culture & History of the Zadar Cruise Port

Zadar’s history is nothing short of fascinating—the city has changed hands countless times, seen dozens of occupations, faced destruction, and somehow persevered through it all. Though evidence of settlement dates back to the Neolithic era, the Romans began to invade parts of what is now modern-day Croatia in the 2nd century BC. Evidence of the Roman colonization is still apparent in Zadar.

By the 10th century, Zadar was brought under the umbrella of Croatia as part of a treaty in 1069. Attacks and invasions by Venice, then Turkey, then the Austrians took over in the early 1800s. The Italians occupied Zadar after Austria-Hungary collapsed starting in 1918, but World War II brought a lot of damage to the city. Post World War II, new importance was placed on reconstructing and rebuilding Zadar as not only a beautiful city to live in, but as a place where tourism could flourish. Zadar’s culture is a rich amalgam of all of this—its monuments and ruins reflect various periods of history, and Zadar is critically important for understanding Croatia’s history, literature, and arts.

Today, Zadar is placing more importance than ever at maintaining a strong economy and making the city appealing to tourists. Though Dubrovnik holds the spotlight and welcomes many more tourists each year, Zadar holds its own, and its quieter vibe and welcoming spirit give visitors a much needed break from Dubrovnik’s crowds.

Zadar Port Facilities & Location

The port of Gaženica is only three or so mile from downtown Zadar. Of the twelve piers at the port, three of them service cruise ships and six of the piers are dedicated to Croatian ferries. It’s also an easy walk to explore Zadar from the port of Gaženica, so if you haven’t booked a shore excursion, you can also find plenty to see solo. Zadar continues to grow in popularity as a cruise destination each year, so updates and improvements on the port facility are frequently being made to improve infrastructure and traveler experience.

Transportation in Zadar

Getting around Zadar is easier than ever, as the town continues to adapt to tourism and make improvements to their already efficient transit system.

There are bus routes covering the entire city of Zadar, and buses in the city center of Zadar run every fifteen minutes. Should you need to get to the airport, there is also a bus shuttle to the Zadar Airport from downtown.

Taxi is also an option for you, and taxi drivers are allowed into the port area to pick up passengers and take you wherever you need from there. Uber has also been available in Zadar since 2017.

Private Car

See the entire city via private car while on your cruise to Zadar, Croatia. Don’t wait till you get to Zadar to reserve your private car; book in advance for the best rates.

Once you get off the free shuttle, Zadar’s old town is fairly walkable during your stop, with easy-to-navigate streets made of beautifully smooth marble.

Shopping Near the Zadar Cruise Port

You won’t find much shopping at the cruise port itself other than souvenir stands, but head into downtown Zadar for more chances to shop. Take a shuttle from the cruise port of Gaženica into town.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The local currency in Croatia is called the Kuna (KN), and some businesses will accept Euros as well. You’ll want to keep a little Kuna on hand to enter attractions and sightsee while you’re in Zadar. Find ATMs throughout the city, and the exchange bureau can be found in Old Town. Tipping isn’t mandatory in Croatia, but rounding to the nearest Kuna or leaving a 10% tip for great service is always kind.

Zadar, Croatia

Zadar, once an island separated from the mainland by a deep moat, boasts one of the region’s richest histories. For over a millennium, it was the capital of independent Dalmatia and so held great sway with Rome, Venice and other empires. Its impressive city walls attest to its might, and the bold Romanesque architecture of its three churches embodies its religious influence. A maze of cobblestone streets winds through its magnificent Old Town, a remarkable repository of red-roofed, medieval stone houses.

What is the Sea Organ in Zadar?

Picture this: you’re standing at the edge of the Adriatic Sea, waves gently caressing the shore, and suddenly, a mysterious melody begins to play. But there’s no orchestra in sight and no musicians hidden among the rocks. Instead, the music seems to rise from the very depths of the sea. Welcome to the Sea Organ of Zadar, Croatia!

This architectural marvel is not your typical musical instrument. It’s a fusion of engineering and art, a place where human creativity dances with the forces of nature. The brainchild of architect Nikola Bašić, the Sea Organ was envisioned as a gift to the city and its people as a way to celebrate Zadar’s maritime heritage and create a harmonious meeting point between land and sea.

Today, you can sit along the steps of the Sea Organ and listen to its sounds as the sea laps up against it. It’s one of the best things to do in Zadar, so definitely don’t miss it!

The History of the Sea Organ in Croatia

The Sea Organ in Zadar was installed and opened to the public on April 15, 2005, but its origins date back to the aftermath of World War II when the town of Zadar faced significant destruction from Allied bombings. The city’s post-war reconstruction efforts led to the creation of a concrete coastline as part of an urban revitalization project.

Fast forward to the early 2000s when architect Nikola Bašić , renowned for his visionary designs, took on the challenge of further enhancing the city’s waterfront. He had to work on renovating an uninviting pier that accommodates large cruise ships, but he had an audacious idea. He would create an artistic installation that would utilize the sea’s natural movements to produce music.

With this vision in mind, Bašić designed the Sea Organ, embedding it beneath the concrete steps of the pier. The installation consists of a series of polyethylene tubes and resonating chambers hidden beneath the surface. As the waves hit the pier, air is pushed into the tubes, creating a harmonious melody that emanates from the ground itself.

The Sea Organ’s completion marked a triumphant moment in Zadar’s history, and it quickly became one of Croatia’s top attractions.

How does the Sea Organ in Zadar Work?

Approaching the Sea Organ, you’re greeted by a series of wide marble steps that descend into the sea. But these steps are no ordinary steps. They conceal a hidden symphony. Beneath the surface, 35 polyethylene tubes of various lengths and diameters lie in wait. These tubes, designed to resemble simple steps from above, are actually ingeniously connected to a network of resonating chambers below.

The beauty of the Sea Organ lies in its simplicity. No electricity, no digital trickery – just the raw and organic power of the sea. As the waves lap against the steps, they push air into the chambers, creating pressure that forces the air to escape through the organ pipes. The result? Nature’s own composition, an ever-changing melody that ebbs and flows with the tides.

What does the Sea Organ in Zadar sound like?

As you sit on the steps and let the music wash over you, you’ll find yourself entranced by the Sea Organ’s music. The tones are hauntingly beautiful, ranging from deep, resonant notes to gentle, ethereal whispers. It’s as if the sea is speaking to you.

As day turns to dusk and the sun begins its descent, the Sea Organ takes on an even more magical quality. The evening light paints the sky with hues of gold and pink, and the melody of the sea becomes an accompaniment to the breathtaking sunset.

Visiting the sea organ

When to Visit the Sea Organ

If there’s one time you absolutely must visit the Sea Organ, it’s during sunset. As the day draws to a close, locals and tourists alike gather along the waterfront, drawn by the allure of Zadar’s renowned sunsets. And as the sun dips below the horizon, the Sea Organ plays its melodies, creating an unparalleled audiovisual experience.

The combination of the mesmerizing sea music and the breathtaking sunset creates an atmosphere that will live on in your memory. It’s as if the universe itself has orchestrated a grand finale to celebrate the day’s end. As you bask in the beauty of the moment, you can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for being able to witness such a beautiful natural event.

Why is there a Sea Organ in Zadar, Croatia?

The Sea Organ is more than just an architectural marvel, it’s a symbol of Zadar’s connection to the sea and its appreciation for the environment. The project was part of the city’s revitalization efforts to transform the waterfront into a place that celebrates both its history and its future.

In addition to its musical and artistic merits, the Sea Organ also serves a practical purpose. It acts as a breakwater, protecting the coastline from strong waves and preserving the surrounding area. It’s a testament to the harmony that can be achieved when humans work hand in hand with nature.

How many Sea Organs are there in the world?

Sea organs are acoustic structures that use the movements of seawater to produce music. There are currently only two such organs in the world: The Wave Organ in San Francisco and the Sea Organ in Zadar, Croatia.

The Wave Organ in San Francisco was created in 1986 and consists of 25 polyvinyl chloride and concrete pipes set vertically into the ocean. As the tide ebbs and flows, water sloshes in and out of the tubes, creating melodic sounds. The length and diameter of each pipe determine the range of pitches. It is most active at high tide.

Meanwhile, the Sea Organ in Zadar, Croatia was built in the early 2000s and is situated underneath a concrete coastline. As the sea meets the pipes, visitors walking on the pier can listen to undulating harmonies. The Sea Organ won the European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2006 and is a top Croatian landmark.

You might also be interested to know that there used to be one in Blackpool England called The High Tide Organ . It was the most conspicuous of the three sea organs as it resembled the neck of a guitar standing 15 meters tall. It consisted of 18 pipes connected to buried pipes that extended through a sea wall to the water. Unfortunately, it was closed in 2022 due to being in dire need of repair.

In addition to sea organs around the world, there is the Great Stalacpipe Organ in Luray Caverns, Virginia, near Shenandoah National Park . It is played by a human using a piano-like keyboard to strike stalactites and produce tones similar to a xylophone or bells. It is considered the world’s largest musical instrument due to its extensive stalactite span.

What is the Greeting to the Sun?

Having covered the Zadar Sea Organ in great detail, you need to know about the next best thing in Zadar, which sits right next to the Sea Organ: The Greeting to the Sun, also known as “Pozdrav Suncu” in Croatian.

This stunning modern art installation is located on the waterfront of Zadar, Croatia andcwas designed by the same architect as the Sea Organ, Nikola Bašić. This makes the two installations a perfect pair to experience in Zadar.

So what is the Greeting to the Sun? Imagine a large circular solar-powered light installation, embedded into the pavement of the waterfront promenade in Zadar. The Greeting to the Sun consists of three hundred multi-layered glass plates arranged in a 22-meter diameter circle, positioned flush with the ground. Beneath these glass plates lie solar panels that harness the power of the sun during the day.

As the sun sets over the Adriatic Sea, the magic begins. The solar panels which have collected energy throughout the day, come alive at night, illuminating the circular pattern with colorful light. The light patterns are programmed to create a mesmerizing visual spectacle that changes in sync with the rhythm of the Sea Organ and the surrounding environment.

This futuristic art installation celebrates the natural wonders of Zadar, combining cutting-edge technology with the power of nature. The Greeting to the Sun is a symbolic homage to the sun, an essential element in Croatia’s coastal lifestyle. Located next to the Sea Organ and timed to its rhythms, the Greeting to the Sun in Zadar complements the musical melodies perfectly.

Split - Zadar - Split route map

SPLIT & ŠIBENIK

Awake refreshed and draw back the curtains to witness the morning sun rising over the glistening water; now you’re really on holiday and home will feel a long way away. Over a leisurely breakfast, excitement mounts as our beautiful yacht-cruiser slips her moorings and we commence our Dalmatian adventure.

The Dalmatian coastline is considered to be one of the most spectacular in Europe with mile upon mile of quiet beaches and calm, pretty, secluded bays perfect for swimming. The stark magnificence of the mountains sweeps dramatically into a fertile green landscape, studded with tiny stonebuilt hamlets set amongst lush fruit groves and beautifully preserved medieval towns. In the crystal waters of the Adriatic lies a sprinkling of alluring unspoilt islands and mysterious coves inviting discovery. During our cruise this morning we stop for a swim before lunch back on board. After, why not take to the deck and catch up on some reading whilst a kaleidoscope of breathtaking coastal views drifts idly by?

Later we arrive at the port of Šibenik and enjoy a guided walking tour of this interesting little town. Wander through the delightful maze of its medieval old town, unchanged for centuries and see the remarkable cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece and one of the finest in the region. We remain moored in Šibenik overnight, so take dinner at your leisure in one of the many quaint local restaurants, whilst absorbing the infectious charms of this lovely area.

Sibenik

ŠIBENIK, KRKA NATIONAL PARK & VODICE

After breakfast, we take a drive inland to the Krka Valley where the River Krka flows through a series of lakes, gorges and rapids before heading out to sea. The valley in its entirety has been awarded national park status and we will visit part of this exquisitely beautiful area on this morning’s tour.

Due to minerals dissolved in the water, the colours change from turquoise to azure-blue and vibrant green to steel-like greys. We will witness one of the most dramatic stretches of the river – several tiers of waterfall tumble fantastically into a broad, shallow pool.

After lunch on board, we slip our moorings for an afternoon’s spectacular cruising. Enjoy the stunning island views from the comfort of a sun lounger up on deck, cool drink in hand, whilst the salty sea breeze invigorates you – it doesn’t get much better than this.

Later we moor in the lovely coastal town of Vodice. You have free time to wander ashore and explore, so why not enjoy dinner at one of the many waterfront restaurants? The perfect spot to watch the mellowing sun in a blushing sky, as it slowly descends on the hazy horizon.

Waterfalls at Krka National Park

VODICE, KORNATI NATIONAL PARK & ZADAR

This morning we continue our journey northwards and after a leisurely breakfast, we stop for an invigorating swim in one of the many pretty bays along the rocky coastline. Back on board, we soon enter the waters of the Kornati archipelago, where a vast group of over 90 almost desert-like islands lie scattered around the central island of Kornat. The distinct barren landscape of theseislands was a designated national parkland in 1980 in celebration of their remarkably desolate beauty. With striking views at every turn, enjoy another delicious lunch before we arrive at our mooring in the ancient capital of Dalmatia, Zadar.

This bustling coastal town with the style and charm of the Italian Riviera, was for centuries ruled by the Venetians. Home to Croatia’s oldest university, established by monks during the 14th century, sadly much of the historic centre was destroyed during World War II. We enjoy a guided tour before you are free to explore under your own steam. Perhaps visit the Romanesque cathedral with its beautifully carved stonework, or climb the bell tower for spectacular views over the city’s rooftops.

Take a stroll on the promenade or wander the tangle of medieval streets, absorbing the sights and sounds of this cosmopolitan seaside town. Soon it’ll be time for dinner, so why not try one of the many cosy restaurants serving grilled meats or fresh fish dishes? You could end the evening with a glass of maraschino, a local cherry liqueur produced here since the16th-century.

Kornati islands

ZADAR, VRGADA & ZLARIN OR ROGOZNICA

As the sun rises above the rooftops of this historic port, we cast off once again and begin our journey southwards once more. After breakfast head up on deck to watch the picturesque islands of this enchanting archipelago. As the sun glints on the azure-blue depths, sit back and let this gloriously vivid coastal spectacle wash over you. Watch for the marine life in the crystal clear waters below, or chat with your fellow companions over a coffee – simply heavenly.

We find time for a refreshing swim around the beautiful island of Vrgada, with its deserted golden beaches and clear warm waters, before lunch is served on board. We soon arrive in quaint Zlarin or picturesque Rogoznica, their attractive harbours set amidst a scenic landscape of cypress forest and the occasional vineyard. There’s time to wander the pretty waterfront and winding backstreets and as evening falls before heading back to the ship for the Captain’s Dinner, during which a selection of regional specialities will be served.

Rogoznica harbour

ZLARIN OR ROGOZNICA, FUMIJA & TROGIR

Rising refreshed this morning, the relaxed pace of this cruise continues as we cast off from our picturesque mooring and set sail once more. There is time to enjoy another swim stop on the island of Fumija, where the remains of the early medieval church of St Fumija and crumbling farm buildings of the Benedictine monks of Trogir can still be seen amidst the landscape. Back on board for lunch, it’s not long before we reach our next port of call, Trogir, a historic coastal gem with its imposing city walls, a wealth of ancient sights and classic waterfront neatly fringed with glossy palms.

Founded by the Greeks there followed a succession of rulers who all left their mark here amongst the stately Romanesque and Renaissance buildings. At the heart of the old town, you’ll find the majestic cathedral, one of the most impressive in the Adriatic. We enjoy a guided walking tour seeing all the main sights. Later there’s time to explore this fascinating city at your leisure, perhaps head for the hustle and bustle of the local market before returning to the ship for the evening.

Trogir waterfront

TROGIR & SPLIT

We enjoy a leisurely start this morning and after breakfast we continue our journey south. Make sure you make the most of this final morning on board, soaking up the sun on deck or enjoying a drink with newly-made friends in the bar. After a last lunch, it isn’t long before Split’s ancient skyline appears on the horizon once again as we begin our final approach into this unique and remarkable city.

Fascinating and magnificent Split is principally famous for a single building, the Emperor Diocletian’s huge palace, one of the greatest structures of the Roman Empire. No expense was spared in its construction – the finest Italian marble with columns and sphinxes from Egypt. Truly astonishing though is that during medieval times this extraordinary palace was fully integrated into the town’s fabric with a jumble of buildings grafted onto and inside it – for example the Temple of Jupiter became a baptistry. You will find surprises at every turn – spiralling medieval buildings lining the streets, but buttressed by unmistakably Roman columns. We enjoy a guided walking tour of this fascinating complex, recently used as the setting of the epic TV series, Game of Thrones.

Take dinner at your leisure whilst the ship remains moored in Split. Later, enjoy a final digestif on the sun deck and reflect on what has been a very special kind of holiday.

We did the Dubrovnik walls a few years ago. Amazing. We may just do the included town tour this time. Also did Athens acropolis and Parthenon. Thinking of Corinth canal, or maybe Delphi ( a 9.5 hour excursion!).

We did the Corinth Canal tour in May.  The canal is interesting although the buses park at a touristy very busy snack/souvenir/restroom stop. The ruins are good, but not as good as at Olympia (Katakolon).

In Koper we took the included walking tour which was fine.  It’s a small city and easy to walk around.  There are plenty of other tours that will appeal to specific interests.

In Zadar, the falconry tour was one of our favourites on the whole cruise — as has been detailed by my DW here: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2954738-empires-of-the-mediterranean-port-times/?do=findComment&comment=65937656

We visited Dubrovnik twice because we were actually doing two cruises back to back: first Odyssey and then Empires.  The first time we did the included walking tour of the city which was quite informative and certainly gave us ideas about what to do the second time we visited.  On the second visit, we took the cable car to the top of the hill which is definitely worth doing and provided some great views.  We returned to the city and took the ferry to the island of Lokrum which we highly recommend, especially if you are interested in birds.  Lokrum is basically a large park with some ruins and a great number of wild peacocks.  It is a very short and inexpensive ferry ride from Dubrovnik harbour.  You can spend as long or as little time on Lokrum as you like.  There were also people snorkelling there if that is something that is of interest to you.

In Kotor we again took the city walking tour.  It is a very small place with a scenic backdrop, but in our opinion there is not a lot to do there.  We took the afternoon off and relaxed on the ship.

Corfu we visited twice.  The first time we took the tour to Theotsky Winery which is excellent if you like wine for breakfast.  But even if you don’t this tour is definitely worth doing.  In addition to the winery there were some scenic stops.   The second time in Corfu we started out on the Traditions of Old Corfu walking tour but somehow ended up wandering around the city on our own which was just fine.  We bought some awesome Kumquat liqueur.

Santorini is a very busy place.  We had previously been to Santorini twice on our own and stayed there for some time.  So we know the island well but chose not to disembark because the facilities for cruisers are extremely taxed.  The island is enormously busy and we had a great time sitting on the 2nd deck behind the restaurant floating around the Caldera on the ship and watching the crowds on the shore.  If you have not been to Santorini the best (in our opinion) place to visit is Oia.  There you will see the picturesque blue-domed churches and have some great views of the Caldera.  Fira is also an interesting place to visit and to shop but it will be very busy.

We stayed on our own in Athens after disembarking and explored it for a few days.  We loved the Plaka district and did the Acropolis which is a must-see but it is invariably hot and crowded.

What about the Cape Sounion?  Anyone done that?

1 hour ago, mimijes said: What about the Cape Sounion?  Anyone done that?

It’s part of my writeup for my Almost Live Journey to Antiquities in a previous thread.

It’s a picturesque bus ride along the coast to the cape and about 45 minutes at the site. We took it because we had mistakenly double booked the Acropolis (the Acropolis Experience when onboard is identical to what you are given on the Classic Greece extension). Cape Sounion was the only other available tour that took us somewhere we had not yet been. It was an ok tour. We were a bit jaded after our previous three day adventure.

Lokrum sounds interesting to me having been to Dubrovnik previously. Where does the ferry go from and can you get a ticket on the day? Xx

The boats leave from the harbour at the base of the Stradun.  (If you come through the Pile Gate, walk all the way down the Stradun).  There are lots of hawkers selling all sorts of tours there.  You can buy tickets there in a shop near the clocktower, before you pass through the gate and into the harbour.

Thank you that sounds like a plan.

We hired a private guide in Athens, and she took us up to Cape Sounion. It was about 4 in the afternoon, on a chilly blustery day, so there were only 2 other people up there.

Having said that, we really liked it; it's a commanding view, a beautiful ruin, and we were glad we saw it. Stopped at a great little Greek restaurant on the way back to town and had a wonderful meal.

Were you there for sunset?  Supposed to be beautiful.  From all the discussions and some research, I’m thinking I’d prefer Cape Sounion to Corinth.   Maybe we’ll take the Viking excursion.

We were, but it was really cloudy; we drove over Corinth, but that was it; I don't know what there is to see there, but it's definitely a fascinating construction.

I’ll try to book the Viking Cape Sounion tour when booking opens on the 22nd. First Viking cruise, first time booking excursions with them. Hopefully it will go well.  if I don’t get the Viking one, maybe I’ll try Viator  or George’s taxi.  thanks for your help!

We did Cape Sounion last fall on a small group land tour. It was a last minute add-on that our tour manager suggested. He ordered a couple of minibus drivers to take those in our group who wanted to go for sunset, then took us to a seafood restaurant on the way back. We were glad we did it. Sunset pics are hit and miss. But we managed a couple of nice shots that evening.

We're reading this thread with growing excitement. We are doing the same itinerary October next year. Is there any way I could see a list of the excursions with prices offered for this year? Obviously it would only be a rough guide this far out.

Bluebonnet, Beautiful photos. Thanks.

You can get an emailed PDF of excursions for a recent cruise via the Chat on MVJ. Explain that you understand that the prices and tours may change by next year. Only once has the chat agent not known how to send this, so try another time if you don’t have success.

I tried this once but will have another go.

The agent said that it was not possible 😕 .

I’ve had success 4/5 times! I think the confused agent in my case thought I wanted the actual excursion list for my exact cruise dates, which wasn’t available. Keep chatting until you get results!

I was able to open

our cruise is in a year but gives me an idea

After a few tries I was able to open the link. Very helpful thank you and just what I was looking for.

Today was excursion booking day for us, DV stateroom. I got on at 3:00 pm Eastern time and was able to get the 3 paid excursions we want, as well as our preferred times for the 5 included excursions. Yay!

Thanks to all who gave me information and advice!
