Wondering about the best things to do in La Paz Mexico? I’ll walk you through my favorites!

If you are planning a trip to Baja California Sur, you will want to spend at least a few days in its capital city which is blessed with incredible natural wonders and a vibrant city center.

I have lived in La Paz for about 5 months in total and explored as many places as I could and in this post, I will share all the most amazing things to do in La Paz Mexico plus useful practical tips to live the best vacation ever.

Baja California Peninsula is one of the most exciting Mexican States , so different from any other place in Mexico with a truly magical landscape you can’t take your eyes off.

Picture neverending roads among a red rocky desert dotted with green cacti among red boulders rolling into the intense blue of the ocean.

Driving around Baja California is one of the most incredible experiences in Mexico.

I have done that twice, and in both cases, after exploring all the things to do in La Paz, I rented a car and set off on a road trip to Baja California Sur .

➢ Do I need travel insurance in Mexico? Yes, you do! I can never stress enough what a lifesaver it can be in unexpected situations. Although I hope I never need it, it gives me peace of mind to know that whatever happens, I am covered. I have been using   Safety Wing , and I find it quite fair, covering a lot for its pricing level. Depending on your needs or you can compare different insurance companies on this useful site, TRAVEL INSURANCE MASTER . Make sure you read carefully what’s included before making the purchase. If you are undecided yet, you can read my post on the best travel insurance for Mexico for more clarity.

Before doing that, though, make sure you spend some days in La Paz because, I assure you, there is plenty to see and do, incredible restaurants to try, and gorgeous hotels where to stay and have the best vacation in Mexico ever.

In this post, I’ll tell you a few things to do in La Paz, Mexico . But before that, here’s a bit of background for those of you who don’t know much about the city of La Paz.

Where is La Paz Mexico?

La Paz mural turttle

Overlooking the Gulf of California , La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur state, which is located in northwestern Mexico, with the Pacific Ocean to its right and the Sea of Cortez to the left.

The city is on the southern coast of Baja California Sur.

For a wanderlust like me, that basically means dramatic landscapes, white sand beaches, tons of natural habitations, fascinating remnants of the Colonial era, and much more.

La Paz Mexico is usually seen as a port city for tourists going to Los Cabos , but you shouldn’t make the same mistake.

When I’m done telling you the top 25 things to do in La Paz, you will be surprised it has so much to offer.

So get a coffee, sit back, and read on 🙂

Top 25 Things to Do in La Paz, Mexico

1. go swimming with whale sharks.

The absolute must-do when you visit La Paz Mexico is swimming with whale sharks .

It is, in fact, a very popular tourist activity in La Paz because seeing these incredible creatures from so close is a unique magical experience that everybody should have at least once in their life.

Despite their size, these giants of the sea are extremely gentle and friendly, and seeing them for the first time is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Whale Shark swimming in the sea

La Paz is definitely one of the best places to swim with whale sharks.

You can find many tour operators here who will take you across the Sea of Cortez on a Panga boat and find you the perfect place to swim with whale sharks.

They also provide you with the gear for it, so all you need to do is absorb the experience, although it would be much better if you have your own snorkel.

INSIDER TIP : Make sure you ask for a wetsuit when you book your trip if you tend to get cold because it will be at that time of the year.

Mind though, swimming with whale sharks is available between December through April every year when these majestic creatures come near La Paz’s bay to feed with plankton and krill.

► Book your tour in advance to secure your space on your preferred day.

2. Visit the Stunning Beaches of La Paz

The city of La Paz is home to tons of beautiful beaches , so a trip here would be remiss without at least a few visits to some of them. It’s definitely one of the top things to do, so I highly recommend adding it to your bucket list.

There are many beaches ideal for swimming, spending a day chilling on the white sand, and enjoying watersport activities.

Since La Paz is more of a commercial port, the beaches closer to the town are not really so good for swimming, even though you will enjoy a nice walk on the Malecon (the promenade on the beach).

Playa Balandra view

But if you want to go there for swimming/water sports, you should drive a little further to Playa Caimancito or Playa las Conchas , the best beaches close to town.

However, if you want to see one of the best beaches in Mexico , you must drive all the way to Playa Balandra (or take the bus) and enjoy a full day at this spectacular beach .

You can kayak , paddleboard , or relax and enjoy the spectacular views .

Read my post on the best beaches in La Paz Mexico for more details.

3. Go Hiking in the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains

Baja California is renowned for its travel and adventure opportunities, and one of the top things on the list is the hiking experience of the region.

With so many amazing trails to choose from, it’s a favorite hiking place for many.

I’d recommend the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains if you’re looking for a fun hike while staying in La Paz.

SIERRA DE LA LAGUNA

Nestled in the southern desert region, the area is filled with hot springs, secret lakes, palm trees, waterfalls, and river canyons.

So, if you have ever imagined what it feels like to find an oasis in the desert , you will get to experience it firsthand here.

4. Swim with Sea Lions at Isla Espiritu Santo

Another of the most exciting La Paz things to do is join a boat tour to Espiritu Santo.

The Espiritu Santo island is one of the most gorgeous natural habitats in the Sea of Cortez near La Paz Mexico.

Since it’s a UNESCO-declared biosphere reserve , there’s no development and wildlife truly thrive on this beautiful island.

Among the rich marine life found here, the sea lions are one of the most attractive aspects of the island.

Sea Lions on some rocks

A boat ride to Espiritu Santo Island takes about an hour, but when you get there you will be rewarded with a swim with the friendly sea lions.

Plus, the amazing volcanic rock formations and the landscape of the island and its surrounding region are a sight to see!

Usually, tours to Isla Espiritu Santo include a stop at a nearby island after swimming with the sea lions, where you can enjoy a delicious meal and swim in the chill waters.

You can do this activity all year round, except for June through August, when it’s the mating season, and the sea lions need to be left alone while doing their business :).

But keep in mind that in the winter season from December through March, the water is very cold. So make sure you wear a wetsuit if you can’t bear cold water.

► Book your tour in advance to Espiritu Santo Island.

5. Visit the Museo de la Ballena (Whale Museum)

Yup, you heard it right. Whales are one of the most popular things in La Paz Mexico, so much so that the city has a museum dedicated to them!

The Whale Museum of La Paz is definitely a bucket list-worthy item for every nature lover visiting the city.

Here, you will get to know a lot about the behavior of whales, their habitat, all the history of the various species of the world’s largest fish like gray whales , humpback whales , and blue whales , and also about dolphins , manta rays , and sea turtles .

But that’s not just it, and things get even more interesting. You also get to learn things like their relationship with the local community of La Paz.

Just make sure to go there between Monday and Saturday from 9 to 14, because the museum remains closed on Mondays .

6. Go on a Whale Watching Trip

Although you may need to drive a little far, all the way to Lopez Mateo, whale watching is one of the most incredible activities to do in Baja California .

Grey , blue , humpback whales travel all the way to the Baja California coast to find food, give birth, and mate as they find here the perfect environment for their activity.

Mind that whale watching season is from January through April.

whale watching lopez mateo

When I lived in La Paz I went on a whale-watching tour uncountable times.

The closest place to La Paz to see the whales is Alfonso Lopez Matteo, where you can see the gray whales, the friendliest ones, that will come by your boat and let you pet them. A magical experience indeed.

If you manage to get all the way to Loreto you can see the blue whales, the biggest animal alive on earth. They nest in one of the bays near Loreto in the Sea of Cortez, and there are tours available that you can book directly with local travel agents.

However, to go to Loreto you should consider a 3-day trip .

But while you are there you will want to stay longer and see more! So you will end up extending your stay in Baja because you will simply fall in love!

And that’s the only danger when it comes to traveling to La Paz Mexico. The thing is the Sea of Cortez is magical, full of sea life and dramatic landscapes. You can’t get enough of it !

7. Kitesurf in La Ventana Bay

Beach at la ventana

Another great adventurous activity in the city is kitesurfing. If you’re up for an unforgettable experience, kitesurfing is a surefire way to get your hands on one. The best place to go kitesurfing during a trip to La Paz is definitely La Ventana Bay.

The small town of La Ventana is only a 1-hour drive from the city and is exclusively known for its kitesurfing experience.

With its perfect location to make the best use of air currents flowing between Caravlo Island and the bay, La Ventana has become a hub for kitesurfing.

The best time to go kitesurfing in La Ventana Bay is between November and March.

ROad to las ventanas

Many professionals come here during this time of year, so you can take lessons if you haven’t tried your hand at kitesurfing before, and you can also participate in the competitions that take place here.

Even if you don’t feel like kitesurfing , you can just rent a car and go on a short road trip . The trip itself makes it worth it, but once you are there you will also enjoy the tranquil laid-back life.

Have a walk on the beach watch the kite surfers floating above the water and have lunch in one of the cute local cafes.

8. Visit One of the Ranches and Go Horseback Riding

Visiting La Paz allows you to enjoy various outdoor activities, and horseback riding is one of them.

La Paz Mexico is universally praised for its breathtaking landscapes and scenery . One of the top ways to make the most of this is to go horseback riding through the region.

You will find a few great ranches (ranchos) in La Paz that offer a guided tour of some of the best trail rides in La Paz.

Horseback riding on the beach is another top activity in La Paz , so you can try out that as well.

Luckily, it’s fairly easy to get going, because you don’t need to take any courses or have any certificates to go horseback riding here.

Just visit a ranch, and you’ll be good to go.

Or you can book your tour in advance .

9. Go Kayaking

The calm waters of the Sea of Cortez , are perfect for kayaking .

Whether it is just a couple of hours or a multiday tour you can enjoy incredible experiences paddling around the multiple islands including Espiritu Santo island swimming in hidden bays among sea lions and wealthy marine life.

And if you do it during the winter from December through April you will be able to paddle around whales and see them from a close distance.

You can find many local travel agents and kayak rental companies that will be happy to organize your kayaking tour.

View kayaking tour options

10. Take Kayaking Day Trips from the Balandra Beach

Kayaking trips are a must-do in La Paz , so if your trip is a short one and you can’t manage to go anywhere else, you can still get your chance at going on a kayaking day tour while you are visiting Balandra Beach.

Because you just CANNOT miss Balandra , one of the top natural wonders in Mexico .

Kayak for rent in Playa Balandra

When you are in Balandra Beach you can rent a kayak to set out for an adventurous trip. You will find plenty of kayak rentals here. You can also join a kayaking tour.

The tours offered by many tour operators on Balandra Beach are some of the best experiences in La Paz, and I wouldn’t recommend skipping them.

11. Sandboard at the Dunes of El Mogote

When it comes to exploring the desert region around La Paz, sandboarding offers a great unique experience.

So, if you’re an adrenaline junkie seeking a new kind of adventure, this might just be for you.

El Mogote is one of the best places in Mexico to try sandboarding on the dunes.

You can take a tour here, and trust me when I say this: it’ll be an unforgettable tour because sandboarding down the massive sand dunes is a different experience entirely .

12. Try One of the Cute Cafes in La Paz

Although it may sound obvious, I really had to include it in the list of things to do in La Paz Mexico, simply because being a digital nomad and always in search of good coffee and good wifi , the first thing to do when I visit a place is hunting for a nice coffee shop .

And La Paz is certainly not short of those. Unfortunately, the WIFI is not so reliable, but the coffee is top-notch.

My favorite one is Doce Cuarenta, Starbucks style but with its own personality, great coffee, and delicious bakery, and a lovely internal garden.

The Wi-Fi is not so good, but if you are on vacation you don’t need it.

When you go back from a tour, or if you are looking for a breakfast place this is a great option.

13. Explore the Museums in La Paz

Although some of the most popular things that make La Paz an interesting Baja California Sur destination are natural wonders and outdoor activities, the coastal town itself has a special vibe and offers cultural attractions.

Among the places to visit make sure you swing by the Museum of Art and the Anthropology Museum , to learn more about Mexican culture and Baja California history

14. Check Out the Stunning Street Art

La Paz Mexico Murals

The street art of La Paz is just as much an essential part of the town as its cultural landmarks. Almost every street in the city features artworks created by local artists.

In fact, most of the art on the streets of La Paz is an effort to preserve the culture of the city and paint subjects that represent the city the most.

That’s the reason why you will see most of the colorful underwater world on a giant scale painted on the walls of La Paz Mexico, embellishing the otherwise grey buildings of the city center.

You can check out the street art in all of the streets, especially in the city center, the main market, and the parks.

Another great way to enjoy street art is by taking a walk along the Malecon.

You can also book a guided tour to La Paz street art where a local guide will share the deeper meaning and history of the various spectacular murals.

15. Watch the Spectacular Sunset from the Malecon (During the Day and Night)

The Malecon, which is the beach promenade , is quite a popular spot for locals and tourists alike to take long walks early morning and during sunset and exercise.

It has a special vibe and a place of enjoyment .

Sunset from the Pier on the Malecon

During the day, people walk, run, and bike along the Malecon. Yes, there is a cycling lane running beside the pedestrian side.

Come sunset time, it becomes the perfect spot to watch the colors of the setting sun illuminate the sky over the sea.

In La Paz, I have seen some of the most beautiful sunsets ever. It’s just magical.

16. Visit the La Paz Cathedral (Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Paz)

La Paz Cathedral at night

Among the cultural landmarks of La Paz Mexico, you can visit the Catedral de Nuestra Senora, situated in the main plaza, also where the Art Museum is located.

The cathedral building dates back to 1861. Constructed by the Jesuit missionaries of the time, it’s an imposing structure and worth seeing.

The Cathedral is just as interesting on the inside as well. Besides the architectural beauty , you can also check out many religious performances and live music that take place here.

Catedral de Nuestra Senora is the first thing that catches your attention when you arrive at the square, so finding it isn’t very hard either.

17. Try Out the Delicious Seafood

Visiting a commercial port town and not trying out its fresh seafood would be a golden chance missed. During your trip to La Paz, don’t forget to sample the exquisite seafood the city has to offer.

Chocolate clams are the most popular, so street vendors and local restaurants sell them alike.

I recommend trying out the clams, but La Paz has some of the best seafood restaurants in Baja California Sur, so feel free to try out as many dishes as you like. You won’t be disappointed.

La PAz Marina

18. Take a Trip to Flavor Town by Trying Out the Different Cuisines of La Paz

La Paz has lots of variety when it comes to the dining experience of the city.

From Italian to Argentinian, and of course traditional Mexican cuisine. You will find plenty of specialties in every part of La Paz, and many street vendors are pretty great, too.

Fish tacos are another highly recommended item from the La Paz cuisines, but don’t hold back on any other dishes either.

Fortunately, trying out the different eateries in La Paz doesn’t put a hole in your wallet, so you can hit as many places as you like.

Even vegans and vegetarians find so many different amazing dining options.

See below for some restaurant suggestions.

19. See the Sculptures of La Paz

La Paz sculpture on the Malecon

La Paz has so many awe-inspiring sculptures all around it that you can admire. It’s because many organizations work to bring more flair to the city’s traditional charm, and these sculptures play a big role in doing that.

You will encounter many of these sculptures going about the various parts of La Paz, but the most famous sculptures are located along Malecon.

There’s also a dedicated center for artworks called the Governor’s Palace , which is a historic building where you can visit exhibitions and see potters, glassmakers, and local artists displaying their talent.

20. Take a Tour to Another Popular Destination in Baja Peninsula

todos santos sunset on the beach

Even though you will love La Paz, there are many other pretty cities that you should visit while you are there.

So you can eithe r go in one day on your own , take an organized tour, or go for a couple of days and visit the pretty Mexican Pueblo Magico Todos Santos or the popular San Cabo Lucas .

Both cities also have many amazing day trip opportunities, which I will discuss in another post.

21. Experience the Nightlife

La Paz view from the Cathedral Hotel

La Paz doesn’t have many nightclubs, but that doesn’t mean the nightlife here is any less fun than Cabo San Lucas.

Instead of all-out parties, the nightlife in La Paz entails romantic live music and great dinners with views of the ocean.

You can also hit some of the bars and clubs on Malecon, where mariachi bands or modern music bring the night to life, and many locals are also found here to meet and chat with.

The nightlife of La Paz is something you wouldn’t want to miss out on, so make sure you try out some cocktails while you’re at it!

22. Explore the Old Town

La PAz Mexico Mural in Old town

The rest of La Paz is charming, but the Old Town holds a special place among its attractions in its own way.

The whole area is popular with locals, so you will meet families walking by and elders sitting on the numerous benches chatting.

The Old Town is located around Revolución de 1910 and Calle 5 de Mayo , making it incredibly convenient to take a short walk around the whole area on your own.

But you can also choose to go on a guided tour. Either way, it’s definitely worth exploring.

Besides finding all the city’s main landmarks, you can check out the coffee shops, bakeries, colorful markets, and interesting shops.

Sunset in La PAz

23. Go Paddleboarding

Paddleboarding, just like kayaking is one of the most popular water sports activities in La Paz. Local outdoor shops offer incredible experiences.

You can rent a paddleboard and go on your own, or you can join tours that take you to the most beautiful bays of the Sea of Cortez, including Isla Espiritu Santo.

24. Scuba Diving

If your priority is exploring the underwater world and you are a certified scuba diver, you should join a diving trip to Isla Espiritu Santo where your experience swimming with the sea lion will be much more amazing than if you were snorkeling.

Being completely immersed in the water for 45 minutes with those playful creatures, besides all the colorful sea life that populates the Sea of Cortez is an experience of a lifetime.

Things to Do in La Paz Mexico FAQ + Practical Tips

Is la paz mexico safe to travel to.

The word “La Paz” translates to peace . So I’d say yes, La Paz is definitely a safe destination for travelers if you stay in the central or the commercial areas.

The streets of La Paz are lit and active even at night, and the people are used to tourists being around almost all the time, so you won’t be attracting any special attention to yourself either.

However, it’s still important to look out for yourself just like you would anywhere else in the world and use the same precautions that I mentioned in my post on how to stay safe in Mexico .

Make sure never to leave your stuff unattended in public places, carry only the things you need, and leave the rest of your valuables back in your hotel room.

Also, don’t go to deserted areas at night. With just a few common-sense precautions like these, it will be less likely that you have any safety issues in La Paz.

Is La Paz Baja Worth Visiting?

It absolutely is! Even though the majority of travelers visiting Baja California Sur by water only pass the city to get to Cabo San Lucas, La Paz is still a city with so much to offer.

Los Cabos is more developed and tourism-oriented, but La Paz is where you will find the traditional Mexican charm and lots of things to do.

In fact, many of the travelers who visit Los Cabos and Todos Santos end up taking day trips to La Paz to experience many popular activities exclusive to the city.

So, if you’re looking for lots of watersports , adventure , history , and a sleepy but fun vacation to a city with the best beaches and fresh seafood , La Paz is a great place for it.

What is Special About La Paz Mexico?

La PAz sunset from the Malecon

There is a lot to love about La Paz and that’s why I have chosen to extend my stay every time I go there.

✔ La Paz is a tranquil , but by every definition captivating , tropical paradise on the southern coast of Baja California Sur.

✔ It’s not a resort town like Cabo San Lucas , but the old-world charm of La Paz is unique and makes the city a loveable place in its own way.

✔ The seafront promenade called the Malecon

✔ spectacular beautiful beaches

✔ colorful cityscape with incredible artwork by various local artists

✔ lovely bars and restaurants overlooking the sea

✔ La Paz offers some best snorkeling in Mexico

✔ The shallow waters of many La Paz beaches allow for great family beach trips, and many watersport activities and boat trips are also popular here.

✔ Moreover, the surroundings of La Paz Mexico make for amazing adventures like hiking in the mountain ranges, off-roading , sandboarding , and riding bikes .

La Paz Baja California Marina

✔ Last, but not least, is the undersea charm of La Paz. Because of its rich marine life which consists of more than 20,000 unique species of aquatic creatures , including whales , sea turtles , and sea lions , divers and snorkelers find amazing experiences in La Paz.

That’s why the Sea of Cortez is also known as the aquarium of the world !

You can swim with whale sharks during peak season (January through March), visit the Los Islotes sea lion colonies, and even watch the whales visiting Magdalena Bay.

What is There to Do in Downtown La Paz?

Downtown La Paz has so many charms of the city, including

The La Paz Cathedra l, one of the city’s most famous attractions, is also downtown.

Although La Paz isn’t like other famous Colonial cities of Mexico in terms of having a downtown filled with picturesque views and lots of historic architecture, La Paz downtown is still quite interesting and pleasant to walk around.

Here you can see murals, check out shops, bars, and museums, and try the delicious food.

Sunset in La paz

Is La Paz Mexico Expensive?

The overall cost of your trip to La Paz would depend on your travel style, but if you compare it with many other destinations in Mexico, La Paz is still a relatively cost-effective city.

Despite being a small city, La Paz has something for everyone.

If you’re on a budget, you can find plenty of pocket-friendly lodgings here, but La Paz has upscale hotels and luxury accommodations as well.

With so many different restaurants, things to do, and popular sites, the average expenditure of a vacation in La Paz can be incredibly great value if you know your way around the city.

Do You Need a Car in La Paz Mexico?

Road to Balandra

A car will come in handy in La Paz, but it’s not a necessity, depending on your lifestyle.

In fact, most of the attractions within La Paz are just a short walk away and taxis/buses also take you there, and for the beaches like Playa Balandra and Playa Tecolote that are a bit farther away, you can use public transport like cabs and buses.

Most people stroll around the city, especially along the Malecon and marina, so a car would only take away some of the fun from your trip.

But if you fancy a ride, another fun way to explore La Paz is by renting a bike or scooter.

However, if your goal is to explore the regions around La Paz, renting a car in La Paz Mexico would be a better option for it.

What are Some Things to Keep in Mind During Your Trip to La Paz Mexico?

The rule of thumb to visit La Paz is going crazy and having tons of fun doing the many things it has to offer.

Apart from that, there’s not much for you to worry about. However, some practical tips never hurt, so here are some of those:

  • First and foremost, staying hydrated is important. However your body might not respond well to the tap water of La Paz, so make sure to get bottled water or use a water filter to purify the water before drinking it.
  • Even though Baja California Sur is generally very safe, it’s still better to check out the Mexico safety guidelines issued by the travel advisory and practice common precautions like avoiding night driving and deserted areas.

La Paz views from the Malecon

  • To ensure your vacation in La Paz is fun-filled and memorable, make sure to pack well. The items you will need here include swimsuits and flip-flops for the beautiful beaches , running shoes if you plan on strolling a lot in the city and going hiking/exploring the desert region around the city, some sunscreen to protect your skin against La Paz sun, and a jacket if your bucket list includes romantic evenings and boat trips on the bay.
  • Exploring the surrounding regions of La Paz is definitely a must-do during your trip to the city. Almost all the roads in these regions are in great shape, so a car rental would be perfect for it. You can also go off the road, but make sure your car rental service is okay with that beforehand.
  • If you’re going to La Paz, take a flight to Los Cabos. Since Cabo San Lucas is a more popular destination on the Baja California Sur, you will find cheaper rates on flights going there, and getting to La Paz afterward is no issue at all.
  • Lastly, learn some common phrases in Spanish. Knowing a little bit of the native language will always come in handy, no matter which destination in Mexico you’re planning to hit.

👉 do i need travel insurance to travel to mexico.

I would do it if I were you. You never know what can happen and know that no matter what, you will be covered with any expenses will give you peace of mind, and make your travel worry-free. You can check out SafetyWing which I have used and find it affordable and comprehensive and also Travel Insurance Master w hich is great because you can insert all your information and what kind of insurance you need and their system will pull out the best insurance for your need.

🚰 Can I Drink Tap Water in Mexico?

No, you can’t! Maybe in some areas or in some homes where they have installed water filters but to be on the safe side, I would say, never drink tap water in Mexico. Carry a water bottle with you and fill it up where you find available potable water sources. Most of the hotels have those.

🚗 Is It Safe to Drive in Mexico?

The short answer is: depending on where you are. Although in general if you stick to the main roads and don’t drive at night you should probably be safe. In lesser tourist areas you should probably check the local news to stay up to date. Driving in the Yucatan Peninsula is easy everywhere, even at night, although I would still avoid it. I recommend Discover Cars because the site offers the option to compare prices among different car rentals and you can add their own full coverage.

Read more on my guide on Renting a car in Mexico .

📱 Will My Phone Work in Mexico?

It will probably work, especially if you have a European or US phone, but your roaming rates may be to the stars (check with your SIM provider). Even if have an affordable international rate, you will be much better off by buying a Mexican SIM Card . It’s cheap, easy to set up, and it will keep you connected with your friends, family, and, more important, google Maps so you will never get lost!

🤕 Is It Safe to Travel to Mexico Right Now?

The short answer is, yes it is. However, there are parts of Mexico that are indeed troubled and you should avoid for now, and others that are super safe and easy to travel around.

Regardless of where you are you should always use some common sense rules such as, never flaunting expensive clothing, accessories, electronics, or money and keeping a low profile.

Read more on my detailed guide on safety in Mexico . If you are traveling to a specific destination I have got you covered as well:

  • Is Cancun Safe?
  • Is Tulum Safe?
  • Is Puerto Vallarta safe?

💉 Do I Need Any Vaccine to Travel to Mexico?

No, there is no vaccine requirement (of any kind) to travel to Mexico

🇲🇽 Do I Need a Visa to Travel to Mexico?

If you are coming from the US or Europe you don’t need a VISA to enter Mexico. Once you get in you need to fill out a form that you need to keep with you until you leave. If you don’t have it you will pay a fine. Although the tourist visa for US and European travelers used to be 6 months long which you could easily renew by leaving the country for a couple of days and going back, nowadays they have been stricter. You may be asked how you would sustain your living and other similar questions. Sometimes they even ask you to show your credit cards. It seems odd but they can do that. If you intend to stay longer than a usual couple of weeks’ vacation time, just be honest and explain your plans. If you are not from the US, check this site to see if you need a visa

💸 Where Do I Find the Best Travel Deals for Mexico? 💸

A trip to Mexico can be expensive if you love to travel with all the comforts (like I do). There are a few tricks that will help you find the best deals. Here are my tips:

👉 DON’T travel in the high season, which is Holy week, Christmas and winter in general, and August. 👉 Book months in advance to find early booking discounts 👉 Use aggregators such as Discover Cars to find price comparisons and VRBO for vacation rentals! 👉 Look for packages flights+hotels on Expedia . 👉 Check on Booking.com or Hotels.com for hotel deals

Happy travels!!

Where is La Paz, Baja California, Mexico?

The Baja California Peninsula, extending south from the U.S. state of California, is home to two states of Mexico: Baja California and Baja California Sur (referred to by locals as Baja Sur or BCS).  La Paz is the state capital of BCS and a quiet town with colonial roots.

It’s about two hours north by bus or car from Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, the two towns served by Los Cabos Airport (SJD). It’s also about an hour from Todos Santos , another Baja Sur town that belongs on your bucket list!

The Pacific Ocean is on the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula.  Its east coast is separated from mainland Mexico by the Sea of Cortez, also known as the Sea of California.  This sea has more than 900 islands, 244 of which have UNESCO World Heritage bio-reserve status.

How to Get to La Paz Baja Sur

To get to La Paz, catch a connecting flight to La Paz Airport (LAP) from Mexico City.  Or take an international flight to Los Cabos (SJD) two hours south. There are many bus departures throughout the day from Los Cabos to La Paz , or you can rent a car at the airport and drive.  Getting to La Paz is a scenic drive on the new toll road, Highway 19, with the Pacific Coast on one side and the Sierra de la Laguna mountains on the other.

If you decide on a road trip, check out my advice on renting a car and driving in Mexico , which I’ve done many times, including in Baja California Sur.

Downtown la paz.

The town of La Paz is separated from the sea by a wide boardwalk known as El Malecon.  Couples and families stroll along the Malecon in the afternoon and evening, enjoying the ocean view and pausing for photos with statues that dot the promenade. You’ll also see kids speed past on rollerblades and scooters, so keep an eye out!

The Malecon also follows the Paseo Alvaro Obregon (street), which is lined on the other side with shops, restaurants, and hotels.  I stayed along the Malecon when I visited, and liked being able to walk to dinner each night.

There is free parking along the Malecon or on its side streets, plus some hotels have parking lots.

Visit la paz beaches.

La Paz has some of the best swimming beaches in Mexico with calm, clear waters.  The Malecon has a beachfront, but you’ll find the best beaches for swimming are a few minutes outside of town.  Within 10-45 minutes’ ride by bus or car you can reach several that have bars, restaurants, and lounge chairs for rent.

Playa Balandra | Balandra Beach | Best Beach in La Paz

About 18 miles (29 km) from La Paz, at the end of the paved road from La Paz, you’ll reach Playas Balandra and Tecolote.

Playa Balandra has been referred to as the most beautiful beach in Mexico.  Once slated for resort development, it was saved by local citizens and activist groups who wanted to preserve its unspoiled landscape.  Thanks to their efforts, it’s now a natural protected area.

You won’t find big waves at Playa Balandra.  Due to its protected location in a shallow lagoon, it’s perfect for beach walks, wading and playing in the sand.  You can walk and walk, and the water will never reach higher than your waist!

signage at Playa Balandra

Balandra Beach is a great location to hike for a view overlooking the bay, especially at sunset.  There’s also a famous rock formation known as El Hongo (the mushroom).

Services are limited here because of Playa Balanda’s protected status. Bring cash and change for the eco toilets and snack truck, or bring a cooler for your day.

Playa Tecolote is the last beach along the beach road from La Paz.  It has the same blue water as Balandra, but a little stronger waves. You can rent kayaks and other water sports equipment here and walk for what seems like miles along the beach.  There’s also several restaurants where you can have beers and seafood right on the beach.

Swimming with Whale Sharks in La Paz, Mexico

La Paz, Mexico might be the best place in the world to swim with whale sharks.  They migrate to the bay here from October to March, so excursions are just a short trip from shore. But most importantly, La Paz has made efforts to regulate tourism of this kind and make their animal encounters sustainable.

Whale sharks aren’t whales, but are rather the largest species of fish.  The “whale” part of their name refers to their massive size: when full grown, they can be 18-33 feet in length!

What to Expect on a Whale Shark Day Trip

In La Paz, the number of whale shark tour boats in the bay are limited. Monitor boats also check the operators to ensure their guests are interacting responsibly with the animals. There is a limit on the number of snorkelers permitted to observe any one animal (4), plus a guide must also be in the water. We all received instruction on the distance to keep from the sharks (at least 3m from the tail, and 2m from the side of the animal).

I had thought that I would be scared of the sharks, but I jumped right in when it was my turn! Whale sharks are filter feeders, which means that they eat by straining food like plankton from the water. But still, their size was awe-inspiring, even though I knew they’re harmless.

Booking a Whale Shark Half Day Tour

Many half-day snorkeling excursions leave from the La Paz pier known as Muelle Fiscal.  You can find operators here offering tours each morning, but it’s better to book ahead of time with a reputable company.  I went with Red Travel Mexico and our guide Dani was a marine biologist, so she was able to provide a lot of information about research and conservation efforts in La Paz.

To book, contact Red Travel Mexico . Or for online booking with immediate confirmation, check out MeXplore , Tuna Tuna Tours , or La Paz VIP Tours .

Day Trip to Isla Espiritu Santo | Espiritu Santo Island | Best Things to Do in La Paz

Near La Paz is the protected UNESCO biosphere reserve named Isla Espiritu Santo. It’s technically an archipelago, and the northernmost island is home to a colony of sea lions!  The surrounding reefs are a great spot for snorkeling, and many tours here include a picnic lunch on a secluded beach.

I took an awesome day trip with Red Travel Mexico to Isla Espiritu Santo. When we arrived at the Las Islotes colony, some of the juvenile sea lions started bobbing up and down in the water near our boat to get a look at us. The tour operators don’t feed them, but the sea lions are so curious and playful that the females and juveniles get very interested when people visit!

Los Islotes Sea Lion Colony

What to Expect on an Isla Espiritu Santo Day Trip

You can watch the colony from the boat, or get in the water to snorkel and some of the juveniles will swim around to say hi. This is definitely a bucket-list experience.

A day trip to Isla Espiritu Santo is the #1 best thing to do when visiting La Paz. I had thought that I would love swimming with whale sharks more. But the sea lions were so playful, and the beautiful islands of Espiritu Santo were so pristine, that this was my favorite part of visiting Baja California Sur.

For fresh seafood in a lovely courtyard setting, try Nim , or Sorstis for a Mediterranean flair.  Il Rustico has great pizza and Italian. Oliva al Mare has a nice view for sunset, since it’s on the 2nd story over looking the Malecon at the Posada de Las Flores hotel (where I stayed).

La Paz Ice Cream Shops

Don’t miss trying some local ice cream and homemade popsicles ( nieves y paletas ) in tropical flavors at La Fuente right at the end of the pier .  (Look for the polka dot paint on the shop and trees!) You pay in cash at the register first, then take your receipt to the counter to choose your flavors.  Be sure to get two dips so you can try different flavors, and eat it watching the activity along the Malecon. (Then go back for a popsicle for the walk to your hotel.  It’s that good!)

Where To Stay in La Paz, Mexico

If you stay at a resort, make sure that you also take a day trip to Playa Balandra. It’s been rated the most beautiful beach in Baja California! Or try this La Paz city and beaches tour which includes Playa Balandra and lunch at Playa Tecolote.

The Malecon or Paseo Alvaro Obregon is a scenic walkway of over 2 miles along the Sea of Cortez, connecting the Marina Cortez and Coromuel Beach.

It’s the perfect spot in La Paz for a leisurely stroll and some photo opportunities, as it’s dotted with sand, rocks, boats, and various sculptures.

The Malecon used to host the Whale Museum, but sadly it’s no longer open.

You’ll find plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars, and the bus terminal along the way.

During the day, you’ll see people jogging and others selling their tours to the beaches or to the island of Espiritu Santo. At night, you’ll see families enjoying the breeze and youngsters skating by.

You can also rent a bike for about 100 pesos per hour (up to 3 hours) and cycle along the beautiful bike lane on the boardwalk.

And don’t miss the sunset on the Malecon!

I personally loved watching it with my toes in the sand, and also at the marina with the sailboats.

la paz méxico

In 2017, La Paz welcomed about 20 artists, as part of the Ciudad Mural Project.

Thus, 27 murals appeared downtown , with elements of the local culture… and they´re stunning!

street art la paz mexico

The Sea of Cortez is so rich in biodiversity that UNESCO has named it a Natural World Heritage Site . The famous explorer Jacques Cousteau dubbed it the “Aquarium of the World”.

The 39 sq miles  archipelago of Espiritu Santo is one of the must-see attractions of Baja California Sur and a highlight of any trip to La Paz.

It consists mainly of Isla Espiritu Santo and Isla Partida , and it is a protected natural reserve that hosts a remarkable ecosystem (32 species of reptiles, 98 species of birds and several marine mammals) and some of the most beautiful beaches .

On the main island, you can also find an archaeological site called Ensenada El Gallo , which is 5,000 years old and shows the presence of the ancient Pericúes .

What to do on Espiritu Santo Island:

  • Watch the sea lions : several colonies of sea lions live here. You can watch them from afar, or swim or dive with them. The best time to see them is from late October to January.
  • Hike the trails : there are a few interpretive trails, which will let you enjoy the landscape and (maybe) spot some endemic species.
  • Camp under the stars (on the beach!)

My advice You need to visit Espiritu Santo Island with a tour , as a permit is required .

Isla Espíritu Santo La Paz

Every year, at the beginning of the year, gray whales embark on a long journey from the Bering Strait, near Alaska, to the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez .

They come here to breed and put on a spectacular display of nature. Imagine: they can grow up to 53 ft and weigh up to 35 tons!

Where to see the whales:

  • Magdalena Bay : located 3 hours north of La Paz, this bay is home to one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Besides gray whales, you can also spot dolphins, turtles, herons and sea lions. You can take a boat from Puerto San Carlos or Puerto Adolfo Lopez Mateos , or join a tour from La Paz .
  • El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve: San Ignacio Lagoon (February-March) is where whales come to mate and give birth to their calves. You can even stay at some eco-friendly camps nearby. Ojo de Liebre is a group of lagoons that hosts many animal species and is a paradise for ecotourism.

Tours from La Paz cost around 2000-2500 pesos per person and include the transfer from La Paz to the departure port (3h trip) with a stop for breakfast, and the 2h boat ride.

My advice  You can see gray whales in La Paz from mid-December to mid-April.

One of the best things to do in La Paz is to watch and swim with the whale sharks .

They are the largest fish in the world : they can reach up to 65 ft! But they are harmless, as they feed on plankton and small fish less than 4 inches.

  • The best time to swim with whale sharks is from October to April.
  • Book the whale shark tour (small group), which includes the boat with a certified guide , all snorkeling gear and a snack with beers :

tour la paz baja california

Kayaking and stand up paddle boarding are some of the best activities to do in La Paz because they let you enjoy the clear waters.

I suggest renting them from Harker Board , which is on the boardwalk.

The water level in the area is quite low, so go early in the day (they open at 11am) when the tide is higher and avoid getting stranded on the sand.

  • Rental prices : double kayak 300 pesos per hour, single kayak 200 pesos per hour, Stand Up Paddle 200 pesos per hour.

stand up paddle la paz

Just 14 miles north (30min) from La Paz, Playa Balandra is the most beautiful beach in La Paz . It was even voted the most beautiful beach in Mexico !

It’s hard not to be impressed by its fine sand, crystal clear waters and rocky landscape.

Here you can see the Balandra Mushroom , a rock formation shaped by the wind and sea, which has become the symbol of La Paz .

Balandra Beach is in a bay, so it’s sheltered from the wind, the water is calm and you can relax in the sun.

I visited in January and the water was too cold for me to swim, but I saw some people doing it, both young and old.

There are also some small trails that let you see the scenery from above, and they’re worth it!

I especially recommend the one between the parking lot and the road: it’s an amazing viewpoint for taking pictures .

The area around the beach has been declared a protected natural area and a Ramsar site .

The place was clean, so I guess there is some control and regular cleaning.

I suggest you bring snacks and water if you plan to stay for a few hours because there was no food or drink service when I went there.

How to get to Balandra:

  • By bus : the ticket costs 100 pesos round trip. There are several departures from 10 am.
  • By cab : a cab costs 250 pesos one way (or an Uber 200 pesos).

Balandra Beach La Paz Baja California

El Tecolote has a truly amazing scenery .

It’s close to Balandra (30 minutes by foot or 10 minutes by car), but it’s very different because the beach is in a wide open space, so it’s usually quite windy.

The landscape is unique : between the mountains, the dunes and some RVs, I felt like I was in a Western or Tarantino movie. In fact, you can camp at Playa El Tecolote for free .

And if you look at the horizon, you’ll see Isla Espiritu Santo not too far away.

How to get to El Tecolote:

  • By bus: bus ticket 100 pesos round trip. Departure from La Paz at 10h, 12h, 13h30, 15h30 and 17h.

By cab: a cab costs 250 pesos one way, or uber 190 pesos

9. Other beaches in La Paz

One of the great attractions of La Paz and Baja California ia the miles of beaches with clear waters that are not too crowded.

In my opinion, Balandra and El Tecolote are the best ones, but there are also other beaches near La Paz that are worth a visit:

Here they are in order of distance:

It is the closest beach to La Paz and the most popular all year round.

Besides its sandy beach, you can also enjoy kayaking, stand up paddle and diving here. What sets it apart from other beaches is its more developed infrastructure. There is a water park with slides, making it the ideal beach for families .

There are also toilets, juices, coffee, snacks, etc.

There are even access ramps for people with disabilities at the main entrances.

How to get to El Coromuel

  • Walking or biking : the beach is at the end of the boardwalk and easy to reach.
  • By cab: a cab costs 100 pesos one way, or an uber about 50 pesos. You can also check out this website for more information about El Coromuel.

el coromuel la paz

This is one of the most beautiful beaches near La Paz .

Its name comes from the rock formation that looks like an alligator, but don’t worry, there are no real alligators in the water!

The beach is closed and guarded , because there is a government building on site, but you can still access it for free .

The water is calm, the sand is soft and many people come here to dive or snorkel.

It is a small and peaceful beach , perfect for going with kids or for those looking for some relaxing time close to La Paz.

This is a small and quiet beach, with clear blue water, that is shallow, and has no waves. It’s perfect for swimming or snorkeling.

On the beach, there is a small restaurant where you can also rent stand up paddle boards.

  • There are bathrooms (5 pesos)
  • You can camp for free .

15 minutes from La Paz, Pichilingue is more developed: it has a marina, a hotel and condos, a beautiful white sand beach with some good (and reasonable) restaurants and a dive center.

You can also rent jet skis here.

La Paz has more to offer than just its landscapes and biodiversity. You can also visit some of these amazing attractions :

The cathedral: This is located in the main square, also known as Jardín de Velasco . It was founded by the Jesuits in the 18th century, but the current building was built in the mid-19th century. It has a simple neoclassical façade and some beautiful baroque altarpieces from the 18th century inside.

Museo de Arte de La Paz : This is in the same square, in the large white building that says “Casa de Gobierno” (Government House). It showcases various artworks from local and national artists.

Centro Cultural La Paz : Two blocks from the square, you can find a beautiful historical monument that now serves as a cultural center. It hosts exhibitions and events related to history and art (music, theater, cinema).

Museum of Anthropology and History of Baja California Sur : This museum displays the cultural development of the region through paleontological, archaeological and historical elements. You can see fossils that are over 60 million years old and artifacts that are more than 40,000 years old . The admission fee is 65 pesos.

What to see near La Paz

La Paz has a lot of fun and interesting things to do .

It’s true that traveling by car is more convenient, but luckily there are also several buses that depart from the malecon.

I recommend you check out these places:

This town is 1h30 away from La Paz and has become a popular destination in recent years.

I did the round trip in one day from La Paz , but I suggest you stay at least one night to enjoy its artistic boho-chic vibe .

What to do in the magical town of Todos Santos:

-Visit the Hotel California , which inspired the famous Eagles song

-Walk through its lovely streets with many shops, cafes, restaurants, etc

-Go to Tequila’s Sunrise Bar & Grill, where Tequila Sunrise was invented (and the mango margarita is yummy too! 🤤)

– Surf at Playa Cerritos in the town of El Pescadero, perfect for spending the day and having a beer in the sun. There are a few surf schools that offer lessons and board rentals

My advice A 30 minute walk from downtown I found a beach ( see its location here ) that no one mentions but is beautiful with its rock formations!

  • How to get to Todos Santos from La Paz (1h20): the bus costs 175 pesos one way, 150 pesos return (there are cheaper tickets at 125 pesos for 12h, 16h and 23h), a taxi costs about 1000 pesos one way and an Uber about 800 pesos

rocas playa todos santos

El Triunfo is a small colonial town 28 miles from La Paz that used to be a prosperous gold and silver mining center.

The main attractions of El Triunfo are its two huge chimneys that belonged to its mines: the Ramona , designed by the famous Gustave Eiffel , and La Julia .

You can also visit the museum that tells the story of its mining history: Museo Ruta de la Plata .

Another interesting place is the Music Museum (or Vieja Casona), which shows the history of El Triunfo with furniture, objects and musical instruments from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

I especially recommend the Cactus Sanctuary (free), where you can walk along a trail and discover more than 50 species of cactus and learn more about them in two informative rooms.

santuario cactus el triunfo

La Ventana is a small fishing village in a bay 27 miles from La Paz , with a gorgeous beach that has a stunning view of the Sea of Cortez .

The main attraction here is kitesurfing and windsurfing , especially from November to March , when the wind is stronger. You can rent everything you need there and even camp under the stars. The town has a market and several restaurants, which is very convenient.

  • How to get to La Ventana from La Paz : It takes 40 minutes by car, a taxi costs about 800 pesos one way and an Uber 600 pesos. There is also a bus that leaves daily at 2 pm (80 pesos) in front of the pharmacy .

la ventana basse californie

75 miles from La Paz, Los Barriles is an important destination for sport fishing enthusiasts (mainly whiting, but also yellowfin tuna, bluefin tuna, mackerel).

Los Cabos is at the southern end of the peninsula and it’s not part of La Paz, unlike the other places I mentioned.

But it’s hard to leave it out because it’s the most developed area in Baja California Sur and one of the Top Tourist Destinations in Mexico .

Its capital is San José del Cabo and the most important city is Cabo San Lucas .

The main attractions are the beaches (like Playa el Medano, Playa del Amor), the water activities, the nightlife with its outdoor bars and clubs, and El Arco , a natural formation between the Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean .

If you’re fit, I recommend this kayak tour that takes you to the Arch of Cabo San Lucas , passing by Lovers Beach . The tour includes hotel pickup, snorkeling gear and drinks:

  • How to get to Cabo San Lucas from La Paz: 2 hours by car, taxi around 2500 pesos or uber 1500 pesos, 340 pesos by bus.

arco cabo san lucas

Here are my suggestions for hotels in La Paz for different budgets :

  • Hostel Casa Esterito: The best budget hotel in La Paz , very quiet, only two blocks from the malecon. Good breakfast, very clean, spacious rooms. I only spent one night there, but I liked it very much. From only 24 usd in a shared room or 49 usd in a private room
  • Hotel Catedral La Paz: This is the best value for your money hotel in La Paz . Modern design hotel, tastefully decorated, right next to the cathedral. Inner courtyard, rooftop terrace with pool and nice view. Breakfast included, from 141 usd per night
  • Casa al Mar: Hotel with contemporary vibes, ideal for a stress-free weekend. Excellent location and beautiful view of the boardwalk. Breakfast included, from 195 usd per night.
  • Orchid House Baja: An option for refined tastes. Ideal for a romantic getaway, space for adults only. Incredible views and privacy. Swimming pool and bar inside the complex. Continental breakfast included, from 490 usd per night.

You can camp for free at El Tecolote and El Tesoro, as they are public beaches.

In one week in La Paz , I had the opportunity to go to several restaurants. Here are my top restaurant recommendations in La Paz:

Eating seafood

  • Claros Fish Jr: This is the best restaurant in La Paz ! They have a very local, affordable, and extensive seafood menu with some meat options. Try the octopus tostada with cheese for 70 pesos, the coconut shrimp tacos for 50 pesos and the grilled fish for 40 pesos. You can find them at Nicolás Bravo 33, La Paz.
  • Mack Fisher: This is similar to Claros Fish, but not as good value for money, though it has a nicer atmosphere. You could try the octopus molote with cheese for 50 pesos and the octopus taco with garlic for 35  pesos. The margarita is good and well served! Their address is José María Morelos y Pavón 965, La Paz
  • Anzuelo:   This is the best restaurant in the  Marina Cortez . They have good service, a nice covered terrace, and delicious chocolate clams (a Baja California specialty) with cream, onion and grilled cheese. You can visit them at General Manuel Márquez de León 2415, El Manglito, La Paz.
  • Bismarkcito: Avoid this place! It is expensive, has poor quality, and everything was either cold, dry or tasteless. A real tourist trap with its terrace on the malecon.

claros fish la paz

Vegan and vegetarian food in La Paz

  • Cappuccino café : A somewhat bohemian place with a terrace offering vegan and vegetarian options. The portions are pretty big, so sharing it´s a good choice, Sampler Capuchino (180 pesos): black bean burger, blue corn empanadas stuffed with spinach, mushrooms, corn and cheese, tacos al pastor with falafel, guacamole. Address: Mutualismo #314, La Paz
  • Nomada Organics & Gourmet: Everything is homemade, but we had to wait more than 45 minutes to eat. The menu is varied, with vegan and vegetarian options. I liked the mango lassi, and the Entomatadas 100 pesos plate with organic tomato sauce, nixtamal tortillas with onion, local goat cheese, cream and avocado. Address: 1235 Francisco I. Madero Street, La Paz.

restaurante vegetariano la paz baja california sur

Having a beer

There is no shortage of bars in La Paz, especially on the Malecon, but I recommend Harker Board Co.

They have two locations, the old and the new, right next to each other. Both have Mexican craft beer ( Baja Brewery ) on tap, and a rooftop terrace.

I love the new spot, with its chill vibe, couch, surf shop, and kayak and paddle board rentals.

I tasted the Peyote Pale Ale (7%) and the Pelirroja Ale Ambar (6%). You can also buy a sampler to try different ones ( 5 oz – 16 oz).

  • Address: Paseo Álvaro Obregón 299, La Paz, Baja California Sur. Facebook Page

harker board la paz

Having a good coffee

  • Doce Cuarenta : the service is friendly and the terrace very pleasant. Good (and huge!) cinnamon rolls, craft beers, coffee cocktails, sandwiches. Free tourist maps are available. Address: 1240 Francisco I. Madero St., La Paz. Facebook Page
  • Big Sur Café Orgánico : smaller, warmer and with a very neat decor, this is an ideal place to sit down and chill. The homemade cakes are really good and not too sweet (apple, red fruits). Address: Ignacio Zaragoza 40, La Paz. Facebook Page

cafe doce cuarenta la paz

This is a valid question and it was the first thing I asked my Airbnb host.

She told me that there was a period of instability, but now it’s peaceful and you can walk around the city center without any trouble.

I’ve lived in Latin America for several years, so I’m used to being cautious, but I have to say that I felt safe all the time during my one week in La Paz .

How to get around in La Paz?

Renting a car is for sure the best way to explore Baja California and make the most of your stay!

To rent a car, personally, I always use Rentalcars.com, for a few reasons:

  • You can easily compare the rental cars prices between all the agencies: for sure the easiest way to find the best rate!
  • Cancellation is often offered free of charge: no need to worry if you change your mind
  • Rentalcars offers full insurance coverage at a lower price than the rental companies , so it’s an instant saving with no effort

Simply click on the green button to find your rental car at the best price:

If you don’t plan to rent a car in La Paz , the buses are quite convenient. This is how I visited all the places, either to the beaches or to other towns in the area.

The La Paz bus terminal is located on the malecon. It is quite small, but there are departures to various destinations in Baja California every day on a regular schedule.

Normally, it is possible to book online on their website, but it wasn’t working for me and I had to buy the tickets at the station. This was not a problem as there are many departures.

Note: the buses are not always on time, so keep this in mind when planning your visits.

  • Address: Álvaro Obregón, 125, La Paz (el malecón)

How to get to La Paz?

Manuel Márquez de León airport has several domestic flights with AeroMexico, Calafia Airlines, Viva Aerobus and Volaris.

From the airport to downtown La Paz, a cab costs about 300 pesos.

I flew from Mexico City to La Paz (2h) with Volaris, a low-cost company, because the tickets were cheaper. But on the way back the flight was delayed 5 hours. Something to keep in mind if you have a tight itinerary.

To find a good deal for your flight to La Paz Bcs , and your international flight to Mexico, I recommend you to use our flight comparator in collaboration with Skyscanner, it’s a guarantee to pay the best price!

aeropuerto la paz baja california sur

The ferry is a bit pricey and slow, but if you want to try a different way of traveling while enjoying the view and maybe spotting some sea turtles and dolphins, this might be an option to think about.

You can take a ferry to La Paz (Pichilingue terminal) from two cities in the state of Sinaloa :

  • Mazatlan : trip duration 13 hours. Departures Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday (from 8 pm to 8 am) with Baja Ferries or Monday, Wednesday and Friday (at 5 pm) with Ferry TMC .
  • Topolobampo : trip duration 7 hours. Departure on Mondays (at midnight) with Baja Ferries or every day except Saturdays (at 11pm) with Ferry TMC .

In addition to the basic ticket, there are several cabin options (at additional cost). Children under 3 years old travel for free, but a ticket reservation is mandatory .

The TMC Ferry ticket includes breakfast and dinner, and the Baja Ferries ticket includes a dessert and soft drink.

baja ferry mazatlan

As La Paz is located at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula , distances are very long to get there.

If your itinerary in Mexico is very tight I do not recommend taking the bus as it will take a lot of time.

There are direct buses to La Paz from several destinations on the peninsula such as Tijuana (23h), Mexicali (24h30), Tecate (22h), Loreto (6h), Santa Rosalia (9h).

If you want to make a route through the peninsula of Baja California to La Paz, I suggest you first fly to Tijuana , and then take the bus ( ABC or Autotransportes Aguila ) or rent a car to go with peace of mind.

The best time to visit La Paz is January-February, when you can witness the amazing whale sharks and gray whales.

La Paz has pleasant weather throughout the year, but the water can be cold and windy from December to June. If you join a tour, they will provide you with a wetsuit.

For warm beaches and sunny skies, summer is the perfect season to visit La Paz.

To help you, here is a map with all the best attractions in and around La Paz .

19 Best Things to do in La Paz, Mexico

Written By: The Planet D

Updated On: February 9, 2024

what to do in la paz

There are so many things to do in La Paz, Mexico. Located in the Baja Peninsula 100 miles from Cabo San Lucas in the southern tip of Los Cabos, La Paz is a beach lovers’ playground. With non-stop flights from Los Angeles, La Paz is a great weekend getaway for those on the West Coast of Canada and the United States.

Not to be mistaken with the other La Paz in South America, La Paz, Mexico is the capital of Baja California Sur. It is located on the West Coast of Mexico in a sheltered bay of the Sea of Cortez (Also known as the Gulf of California) These are the very best things to do in La Paz.

Best Things To Do In La Paz, Mexico

There are only a handful of places that we’d consider living in this world, and La Paz, Mexico is one of them. By the time we had to fly home, we didn’t want to leave but never fear, we’ll be back. In the meantime, let’s check out all the reasons below we love La Paz, Mexico.

1. Sea Kayaking on the Sea of Cortez

things to do in la paz mexico

One of the best things to do in La Paz, Mexico is to go Sea Kayaking on the Sea of Cortez. You can do day trips or multi-day tours. We took an amazing 10-day excursion with Baja Outdoor Activities to San Jose Island and it was pristine.

The turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez were calm and crystal clear. We barely saw another soul during our expedition and had the most amazing time. It may have been a lot of work, but we also had a lot of fun.

There was also plenty of marine life encounters. Pods of dolphins swam by our group of 11 on a daily basis, we saw a whale, (and it isn’t even migration season) margaritas were flowing on the beach each evening and people spent their downtime snorkelling and hiking on the stunning coastline.

2. Kayaking Balandra Beach

sea kayaking Baja Mexico Dave fishing

If a 10-day kayaking trip isn’t on the agenda, Balandra Beach is a good spot to rent a kayak in La Paz. You can book day tours from La Paz to have a guided kayaking trip, or you can rent kayaks to explore its clear waters yourself.

It’s a lovely secluded cove tucked away from the open waters of the Sea of Cortez, so you don’t have to go far to have a great experience. You may also like: 15 Fun Facts About Mexico

3. Isla Espiritu Santo Island

things to do in la paz balandra beach espiritu santo

If you love marine life encounters, Swimming with sea lions  is one of the most uplifting things you will ever do in your life and you can do that in La Paz, Mexico! Isla Espiritu Santo is a UNESCO World Heritage list biosphere reserve.

We had the opportunity to swim with sea lions on several occasions and we never gave up the opportunity to jump in the water with them. One of the best things to do in La Paz is to see the sea lions.

You can take a boat tour on a panga (inflatable dinghies) to Espiritu Santo Island to see the sea lions less than one hour away.

Espiritu Santo Island has one of the most unspoiled ecosystems of the Sea of Cortez in Baja California Sur with white sand beaches, plenty of wildlife. Playa El Tecolote serves as a popular departure point for boat tours to Isla Espíritu Santo. Read more about Isla Espiritu Santo Island at An Unforgettable Adventure at Mexico’s Isla Espíritu Santo

Snorkel with Sea Lions

thnigs to do in la paz mexico sea lions

Visit the Los Islotes sea lion colony and see these playful creatures close up. You can also spy on sea turtles in Los Islotes . Los Islotes is a rocky outcrop that hosts a playful sea lion colony. Divers and snorkelers alike can interact with these curious creatures, making for memorable underwater encounters.

Swimming with sea lions is not allowed from June to August as it is mating season. You can book sea lion tours with GetYourGuide to Balandra Beach and Espiritu Santo Free cancellation with 24-hours notice.

4. Whale Watching in La Paz, Mexico

things to do in la paz mexico

By far, one of the most popular things to do in La Paz is to go whale watching. And La Paz has no shortage of whales migrating through the area. Each year whales make their annual migration through Baja California. What makes La Paz so special is that the whales stop to have their calves and nurse in shallow lagoons.

Whale watching season is usually from January through April as whales migrate through the area. Sightings are almost guaranteed and many times they come right up to the boat and swim alongside the boat. It is definitely one of the best things to do in La Paz.

Blue Whale season is from March to July, Humpback whale season is February to June and Pilot whale season is October to February.

Suggested La Paz, Mexico Tours

Book a La Paz Whale watching tour with   Baja Outdoor Activities in La Paz .  They do day kayaking trips around the Baja Peninsula including multi day group and private excursions and kayak rentals. If you’re looking for the ultimate adventure in Mexico, They also offer Whale Watching, Yoga and SUP trips. Drop Ben an email  to see what they can do.

5. Swim with Whale Sharks in La Paz

animal encounters whale sharks in mexico

No trip to La Paz would be complete without swimming with whale sharks. Every year, whale sharks pass through to feed in the waters around La Paz from the beginning of October to the end of April. It is one of the best places in the world to see the world’s largest fish.

We swam with whale sharks in Cancun and it was one of the most magical experiences of our travels. La Paz isn’t as busy as Cancun, so we feel it would be a better place to swim with these gentle giants. Seeing a whale shark close up is magnificent. These gentle giants gracefully swim through the ocean effortlessly. It’s hard work keeping up to them, but it is an experience you will never forget. Book a La Paz whale shark excursion with Get Your Guide. 24-hour free cancellation and last minute bookings.

6. Go to the Beach

things to do in la paz mexico

Just 15 minutes out of La Paz, you’ll find some of the best beaches in Baja California Sur. Many of the beaches are just north of La Paz. It’s no wonder we saw so many condos developing out of town. Baja City itself doesn’t have a beach downtown but it’s not far out of the city centre that you’ll find yourself in some beautiful stretches of sand.

There are many beaches around La Paz that are easy to visit:

  • Balandra Beach
  • Playa el Tesoro
  • Pichilingue Beach
  • Ensenada Grande

You can reach the beaches of La Paz by bus, motorbike or renting a car.

7. Go Off-Roading

things to do in la paz mexico

Off-roading is huge here. So huge, that the Baja 1000 finishes in La Paz every other year. The nearby desert terrain is the perfect setting for off-road fun. With little civilization along the tracks, a person has hundreds of miles to fun to explore.

We had a taste of the off-roading experience during our drive to our launching off point for our kayaking trip to San Jose Island, and we can attest, it is some of the best off-roading we’ve seen outside of Mongolia.

8. Sandboarding the Sand Dunes

If the desert if your cup of tea, try a turn at sandboarding at El Mogote. It’s a ton of fun zipping down giant sand dunes on a sandboard. Trust me, it’s different than snowboarding, but it is worth giving it a go if you are an adrenaline seeker.

If you have trouble getting the hang of it, just lay on the board and use it as a toboggan. You can book sandboarding tours through Baja Desconocida.

9. Go Sailing

things to do in la paz mexico sailing

Sailing is a major activity in La Paz and when in Baja California, how can you not take a sailing trip on the Sea of Cortez? Book a sunset boat trip to look for wildlife and view the coast.

There is nothing better than sailing on the sea and the spectacular coastline of Baja California will take your breath away. Not to mention the spectacular sunsets.

10. Stroll Along the Malecón

things to do in la paz mexico resorts

Stretching 5.5 km (3.5 miles) from Hotel Marina – the hotel where we stayed in La Paz, there is a beautiful waterfront promenade known as the Malecón. There is nothing more romantic than taking a stroll around La Paz hand in hand with your honey admiring the street art.

Evenings are the best time to visit as the entire town of La Paz seems to come out to enjoy the cooler evenings. People bike, run and walk along the waterfront, stopping in restaurants for dinner or drinks and live bands play late into the night. It’s magical.

11. Paddleboarding – SUP

things to do in la paz mexico paddle boarding

If any of you have been following for a while, you’ll know that Dave and I love paddleboarding and the Calm Waters of the Sea of Cortez are a good place to give it a try.

In La Paz, you can rent paddleboards and paddle along the shore. Or you can book paddleboarding trips and excursions with Baja Outdoor Activities located in La Paz.

If we could carry a paddleboard with us, we’d do it everywhere. I think that if we lived in La Paz, we would use our paddleboards for our commute. If we ever needed to go into town from our waterfront condo (I’m dreaming now) we’d just hop on our boards and paddle in.

12. Shopping in La Paz

things to do in la paz mexico marets

La Paz is filled with jewelry makers and artists and there is a local co-op for artists, a walking street filled with street art and artists and various art shops throughout the town.

One of my favorite parts of visiting Mexico is to buy handmade necklaces and this trip was no different. We bought chains from street vendors and had them change them in front of our eyes to suit our taste.

13. Cathedral of La Paz (Catedral de Nuestra Senora de La Paz)

what to do in La paz

Catedral de Nuestra Senora de La Paz is a lovely Catholic church located in the center of La Paz. It was founded by Jesuit Missionaries in the 18th century and the church was built in the 19th century. It stands where the original mission stood.

Visitors are welcome and can view Baroque religious symbols and enter for free!

14. Street Art of La Paz

things to do in la paz mexico street art

The Malecon is filled with art and sculptures created by local artists. A lot of the art was also donated to help preserve the cultural heritage of La Paz.

Be sure to stroll along the Malecon, in the urban parks, the waterfront pier and into the city square. There are sculptures everywhere. You can read more about the sculptures of La Paz at Tenaja Holdings , a company that donated many of the pieces.

16. Explore the Marina

things to do in la paz mexico at night

We stayed at the Marina Cortez located just a short walk out of downtown La Paz.

Marvel at the yachts parked at the marina and enjoy a stroll along the pier before settling in at one of the restaurants for a candlelit dinner at sunset.

Museums in La Paz

16. Whale Museum (Museo De La Ballena)

The Museo de la Ballena, or Whale Museum, is dedicated to promoting the understanding and conservation of whales and their marine environment. La Paz, being situated near the waters where gray and humpback whales often migrate, is an ideal location for such an institution.

The museum is devoted to educating visitors about the various species of whales, their life cycles, migration patterns, and the threats they face. Through a variety of exhibits, the museum sheds light on the evolution of these majestic marine mammals, their anatomy, and their vital role in marine ecosystems.

Beyond just education, the Museo de la Ballena is involved in various conservation initiatives. They often host workshops, lectures, and other events to raise awareness about the importance of marine conservation.

The Whale Museum of La Paz gives you everything you’ve ever wanted to know about whales. From their behavior and habitat to the evolution of whales and its impact on the local community.

Museo De La Ballena

17. Mining History Museum

A new museum that opened in 2018 located in the mountains of La Paz. Museo Ruta de Plata (The Silver Route Museum), traces the history of the area from the early settlers of the 1500s to the silver mining heritage from the 1750 – 1930.

Two more museums are in the works too! The Cowboy Museum and the Natural History Museum.

18. Playa el Tecolote

what to do in la paz

Playa El Tecolote is one of La Paz’s most renowned beach destinations, offering both tranquility and adventure to those who venture its way. Located just a short drive from the city of La Paz in Baja California Sur, it provides a refreshing escape from urban life and a chance to immerse oneself in the natural beauty of the Baja peninsula.:

Playa El Tecolote boasts long stretches of sandy shores that are perfect for sunbathing and leisurely walks. The crystal-clear waters and gentle waves make it a haven for swimmers and families.

The calm and clear waters are ideal for various water sports, including kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkeling. The marine life is vibrant, giving snorkelers and divers a treat as they explore the underwater world.

19. Take a Kite Surfing Lesson in La Ventana Bay

La Ventana Bay, has rapidly earned a reputation as one of North America’s premier destinations for kite surfing. Its consistent winds, scenic beauty, and warm waters create a near-perfect environment for both beginners and seasoned kite surfers. Here’s a closer look at the kite surfing experience in La Ventana Bay:

Between November and April, La Ventana experiences steady northern winds, known as “El Norte,” which are ideal for kite surfing. These winds result from a temperature difference between the cold air from the north and the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez.

The bay’s steady winds and the lack of major obstacles make it a favorable spot for beginners but experienced kite surfers, La Ventana Bay offers challenging conditions further out in the sea, with bigger waves and stronger winds to test their skills.

20. Go Scuba Diving in the Sea of Cortez

Often referred to as the “Aquarium of the World”, the Sea of Cortez is home to a vast array of marine life. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned diver, the Sea of Cortez offers sites that cater to all skill levels.

The region has seen increased efforts in marine conservation, ensuring that its underwater treasures are preserved for future generations. As a result, divers often encounter thriving marine ecosystems. The underwater topography is diverse, with dive sites ranging from rocky reefs and sandy bottoms to underwater mountains and old shipwrecks.

21. Try the Chocolate Clams

La Paz is located on the sea, so it is no surprise that the seafood is fresh. One of the local delicacies is chocolate clams. The name “chocolate clam” doesn’t come from their taste but rather their appearance. The shell of this clam is a rich brown color, reminiscent of chocolate.

Chocolate clams, scientifically known as Megapitaria squalida , are one of the gastronomic treasures of Baja California Sur, especially in the La Paz region. These bivalves have become synonymous with the culinary traditions of the area. Chocolate clams are among the largest bivalve mollusks on the Pacific coast, sometimes reaching up to 6 inches in diameter. Their size combined with their delectable flavor makes them a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

22. End With a La Paz Sunset

things to do in la paz

Find yourself a beach, a sunset patio or just a place on the Malecon and enjoy the sunset. Nothing compares to the many sunsets we watched while visiting La Paz.

Being located on the west coast of Mexico, we had one extraordinary sunset view after another.

23. Where Eat in La Paz

things to do in la paz mexico where to eat

Make sure you head out at night for some cocktails and nightlife. There are many great restaurants all over La Paz, ranging from small fish taco stands to fine dining.

Our favourite meal out was at  Jonathan Roldon’s Tailhunter  where we enjoyed coconut shrimp, fish tacos, fresh salsa, guacamole and the best margaritas we’ve had in years. It has been a staple in La Paz for 18 years and he also runs fishing charters out to the Sea of Cortez. It’s a place where we instantly felt welcomed and at home. Yet another reason why we think we could live in La Paz..

Hop on to discover the waterfront and stop in town for ice cream to cool off.

Why Visit La Paz?

La Paz is a laid-back town that has all the amenities you need. Filled with marine life and adventure, it has something for everyone.

La Paz, Mexico is growing quickly. Located just north of Los Cabos, it is a quieter vibe than the hectic tourist trap of Cabo San Locus. But Golf courses are springing up and eco-adventures are becoming popular.

Diving is a huge attraction and La Paz is a perfect getaway for the whole family. Jaques Cousteau once called the Sea of Cortez the Aquarium of the Sea and with good reason. You can have many unique wildlife encounters on and under the water.

La Paz is the perfect blend of a sleepy Mexican town with all the amenities of the big resort towns like Cabo San Lucas and Cancun. When we plan our next trip to Mexico, it’s going to be here for sure.

La Paz seems great, can not waite to check it out! Thanks for sharing all your tips!

Looking forward to heading back to Baja in February! Haven’t been since I did my first Yoga Teacher Training there in 2007. This La Paz post is perfect timing since we’ll be doing a 1 week road trip through Baja Sur!

full name of the city was originally Nuestra Señora de La Paz (meaning Our Lady of Peace) in commemoration of the restoration of peace following the insurrection of Gonzalo Pizarro and fellow conquistadors against the first viceroy of Peru. La Paz is fast becoming a must-visit destination on the South American gringo trail, partly due to its convenient location between many of Bolivia and Peru’s greatest sites. The city was later moved to its present location in the valley of Chuquiago Marka.

Swimming with shark whales will be a lifetime experience i guess, i would do that despite the fact that i can’t swim

paddle boarding is not hard if you are relatively fit and have decent balance. The only time it becomes challenging is in ocean waves…its quite easy to fall off if its wavy. It’s also really simple to climb back on. on flat water its a cinch!

I paddle board up north in BC, Canada so falling into the water in Mexico would be pretty warm.

Definitely thinking about coming to La Paz! Met a cool friend at my new job. She’s been to La Paz and tells me it’s fantastic! I really want to go! I think I can make it happen one day too. Look for me, the girl with the big pretty hazel eyes!

I am interested in swimming with the Sea Lions. Have there been may issues with the animals biting people?

We haven’t heard of any. If you respect the environment and let them come to you, you’ll be fine. they are playful creatures, but don’t chase them or try to touch them. Just let them circle are you.

Hi Dave and Deb, My name is Toni and I’m with Dwellable. I was looking for blogs about the Baja of Mexico to share on our site and I came across your great post…If you’re open to it I would love to feature your story, please shoot me an email at toni(at)dwellable(dot)com. Hope to hear from you soon! -Toni F.

Thanks Toni, we’ll send you an email. We love Baja!

Hi Deb&Dave! I love your blog on La Paz. Gary & I have lived there for about 5 yrs now. Gary more so as he is retired, I’m still working. We visited Cabo a few years ago and we loved the area so much we built a house in the hills off Tecelote Beach north of La Paz, Maravia Country Club Estates. Stop by Palapa Azul next time you are in La Paz, Gary is there everyday after 2, November to April. I found the best time to travel there is Oct-Nov or Mar-April. Summer is way to hot. Happy Trails to you!!!

LOVE IT!!! I’ve been to Loreto twice, and I m thinking La Paz this year. Whats the best time of year do you think? Loreto- August was way too hot- December was way too cold! I preferred August over December…thoughts? Great post!

We were there in April and it was starting to get by. I’d choose Feb/March

Awesome!! Thanks so much To Deb and Dave – it our was our GREAT pleasure to host your visit and we look forward to helping all your fans discover this amazing corner of the planet.

Many thanks Team BOA

Blue sky, blue sea, the place is a paradise! I love to see La Paz Mexico!

Glad that there’s so much to see in La Paz. Hope to be there one week from now!

Just wondering re: a few things. You said that La Paz doesn’t have a beach downtown, but that you can reach some great ones by bus, etc. (15 minutes away). I’d love to spend a few days in the town of La Paz and to visit the local beaches during the day, but also want a few nights right on the beach itself. Is there a really nice one (lovely and not too crowded) that you highly recommend?

As for paddle boarding…I’ve never tried it, but might when I’m there. Looks like fun! 🙂

Great Article Deb and Dave, I am always surprised at how few people have heard of this amazing city. Having lived here for 2 years now, and visited for 8, it is somewhere I am so glad that I found!

There are actually a few smaller beaches along the Malecon in La Paz, but as they are by the road they aren’t as tranquil as the beaches 10 to 15 minutes away by car.

There is however a beautiful little condominium and hotel on the beach 5 minutes out from town which unless you are staying there you might not think of going to because there isn’t much parking unless you are a guest.

It is called La Concha, and the condominiums are very reasonably priced especially for being right on the beach. We rent quite a few there and 60% of our guests come back every single year they love it so much.

Drop me an email if you have any questions, and I would be happy to help.

Thanks for the information Simon, we may even look you up too! We’ve been considering wintering in La Paz ourselves. I think it’s the perfect spot in Mexico.

You can’t go wrong in Mexico, in my opinion. It’s why I’ve been here for going on three years now; there’s just too much to love…culture, views, people, relaxed lifestyle….I’d say go for the condo!

We just went sea kayaking in Greece and loved it! Stand up paddle boarding is next on our list to try.

We haven’t spent much time in Mexico, but La Paz looks wonderful.

Stand up paddle boarding is so much fun. If we find ourselves on a beach for an extended period this winter, we’re going to buy a couple of boards and use it as our workout. It’s a great core workout.

I have been to Cancun and Playa, although awhile back. I have never been to the Baja area. Looks like I need to give it a shot.

You will have to give it a shot. We had always gone to the other side ourselves. CAncun, Maya, Cozumel Playa Del Carmen etc. It’s only in the past couple of years that we’ve ventured to the other coast of Mexico and we’ve been wondering why we didn’t do it earlier! Love it here.

Dream trip!! Love all of the activities (go Baja Outdoor Activities!). Even though I live in the hottest place ever, I am longing for a tropical trip…

Coincidentally, someone was JUST telling me about La Paz tonight. I had no idea about this destination until now. Can’t wait to check it out myself!

I came across this post while browsing the net. This is such a great post and experience .

I have never been to Mexico, but seeing how great the place is with your awesome photos, I might push through with my plan next year and that is to visit the place (crossing my fingers)! And I will specifically put this place in my list of “must see /go places”in Mexico. 🙂

I am actually involved in a website (createyourtravel.com) that is currently on its development process which will be focused mainly on giving information to Mexico travelers that will help them ease the planning. So I hope that when it is up and live , you’ll check it out and would love to share your experiences to our users.

Thanks Deb and Dave for sharing such an awesome post!

So glad we could entice you to go to Mexico. I’m curious how you can give advice to travelers to Mexico when you havent’ been there? Hopefully you’ll get there next year so that you can give them first hand information. It’s beautiful and make sure to add La Paz to your list 🙂

Wonderful list of things to do in La Paz for sure and they all look like great fun! I think I would enjoy the Sea Kayaking just for the beauty of that water alone…something I find hard to resist!

Can't wait to go. 🙂

I’ve heard lots of good things about stand up paddle boarding. However, I’ve read mixed reviews on it from being easy to hard. The waters look beautiful there so kayaking would be a lot of fun.

I see why you would live there. Beach alone is good enough I guess. It’s pristine for sure. Looks like there’s so much to do as well. Have fun guys!

7 Day La Paz Mexico Travel Itinerary – A Complete Guide

Swimming with whale sharks to discovering gigantic sculptures and wall filling murals. Nestled on the Sea of Cortez, La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, may be lesser known than the tourist destination of Cabo San Lucas, 160 km (100 miles) south. However those who choose La Paz Mexico travel, find a laid back, authentic setting filled with opportunities for ocean adventures and a vibrant art and culture scene.

La Paz Mexico 7 day Itinerary

A rental car is not required for this 7 day guide to La Paz Baja California Sur. We flew from Canada to San Jose del Cabo. In advance, we booked a private shuttle through our quaint La Paz hotel .

Above is a map we have created which includes many of our suggested La Paz activities. A larger map of La Paz will be available when you check in at Posada LunaSol .

Day 1 – Arrive La Paz Mexico – Posada LunaSol, Restaurante La Costa

Welcome to La Paz Baja California. The first question is where to stay in La Paz Mexico? Our last three visits to the Baja peninsula, including our astounding Gray whale watching adventure , we chose the quaint and reasonably priced Posada LunaSol  (The Sun and Moon Inn).

Located in a quiet, safe neighborhood, one-half block from La Paz Bay, and a short walk to the Malecón, the waterfront boardwalk, the need for a vehicle is minimal. The cozy atmosphere, traditional colonial decor and vibrant mosaic tile create a genuine Mexican setting.

La Paz Mexico Posada LunaSol

Courtyard Posada LunaSol our three time choice of La Paz hotels

With more than a dozen restaurants within a three block radius of Posada LunaSol, there are no shortage of dining options when visiting La Paz Mexico. For dinner on this first evening, take a short walk to  Restaurante La Coste  and dine under the palapa roof.

Or watch the sunset hand off to moonlight as your toes sink in the beach sand of La Paz Bay. We recommend the mixed seafood or shrimp soup, the snapper or stuffed fish fillet.

Day 2 – Malecón sculptures, Buzos, Cathedral Nuestra Señora de La Paz, Art Museum, Anthropology and History Museum, Estrella del Mar

Breakfast Posada LunaSol

Steaming fresh corn bread for breakfast at Posada LunaSol

Wake up to the smell of fresh corn bread wafting from the breakfast area. The  Posada LunaSol provides ‘continental breakfast’ for all guests. Each morning expect to be greeted in the courtyard by smiling staff, who freshly prepare egg dishes, baking, fresh papaya, pineapple, melons and of course coffee.

Clearly they set the standard high for continental breakfast for all  hotels in La Paz Mexico.

La Paz Malecon Sculpture

Prominent features of La Paz tourism -Statues on the Malecon

Start your La Paz Mexico vacation by strolling on the seaside Malecón. As pelicans dive relentlessly in La Paz Bay, gaze at the statues along the walkway.

Stop for coffee at  Buzos . Their famous mini Elote Hot Cakes have excellent reviews. Grab an outside table for people watching and gorgeous views of the water.

Turn right off the Malecón on to Cinco de Mayo (Calle 5 de Mayo). Watch for the Dove of Peace sculpture as a landmark for your turn.

At the corner of Cinco de Mayo and Belisario Dominguez streets is Museo de Arte de Baja California Sur. Open Tuesday to Sunday, the museum’s three halls are in the heart of downtown La Paz.

Across the street from the Art Museum is Velasco Garden (Jardín Valesco). Should you need some shade and a bench for a rest you will find it here.

on the north side of the park, in the location where the Jesuits founded the mission in the eighteenth century, towers Cathedral Nuestra Senora de La Paz (Our Lady of Peace Cathedral). The interior is adorned in baroque style altarpieces from other abandoned missions.

Continue on Cinco De Mayo for three blocks to the Anthropology and History Museum . The admission is 45 pesos. Should you wish to take photos an extra 45 pesos is charged. We delegated one person as photographer.

Giant dioramas, photography, sculptures, diagrams and fossils make this one to add to the list of what to do in La Paz Mexico. Unfortunately all of the information in the museum  is in Spanish only.

Dinner tonight is a few blocks from the hotel on the west end of the Malecón beside the sea at Estrella del Mar.  If weather permits, the outdoor seating provides a beautiful view.

Day 3 – Swim With Whale Sharks, La Fuente Ice Cream, Seis O Traditional Bakery, Bandido’s Grill

When your hotel is co-located with an adventure company, the convenience cannot be overstated. Posada LunaSol and Mar Y Aventuras (Sea & Adventures) offer sea kayaking, snorkeling, whale watching and perhaps the best of all things to do in La Paz Mexico, swimming with whale sharks.

Whale shark swimming Mar Y Aventuras

Getting ready to swim with whale sharks La Paz Bay

What happens when you are in the water with the largest fish in the world? Having gone swimming with the plankton feeding giants twice, I confess to squealing through my snorkel each time.

Whale Shark La paz

La Paz Mexico snorkeling with whale sharks

Whale shark season La Paz runs from approximately October to March. Access to the whale sharks is thankfully strictly regulated. Small numbers of licensed La Paz Mexico tours are allowed into the bay each hour.

It is important to understand that when  you book a whale shark tour your group may need to wait to access the bay due to the restricted access. Leave this day flexible for varying departure times.

Whale Shark La Paz bay

Be sure to book your whale sharks La Paz swimming well in advance of your arrival.

Returning to Posada LunaSol, change out of your swimming gear and head toward the Malecon. A trip to La Paz Baja California Sur would not be complete without a stop at La Fuente Ice cream shop.

We recommend choosing the refreshing Pitaya flavour made from the red fruit of the local Pitaya cactus. Watch for the white trees painted with vibrant polka dots.

After all that whale shark swimming you deserve another treat right? Head back toward the hotel and continue three and a half blocks from Posada LunaSol on Calle Topete to find a hidden gem of  La Paz Mexico travel.

Between the streets of Calle Sinaloa and Calle Nayarit, you will find a traditional bakery (panaderia tradicional) that has been serving the community for more than fifty years. Oscar, who began by helping his Dad at the age of 10, and now does all of the baking.

Traditional bakery La Paz Mexico

Oscar making buns as he has done for 50 years

The price is standard at 5 pesos per piece or 50 pesos per kilogram. We left with a bags bursting with Oscar’s delicious baking, fresh from a massive stone oven. Apparently so do others as the bakery sells 1200 items per day.

We asked, with the help of our local guide, when the bakery was open. Oscar replied,  “Anytime during the day. Knock on door or shout Oscar.” We would suggest late afternoon when we found the gate open.

What does SEIS O stand for you ask? The six children born to Oscar’s parents whose names all begin with the letter ‘O’.

Panderia Tradicional La Paz Mexico

Dinner tonight at nearby Bandido’s Grill on the corner of Topete and Antonio Navarro. Burgers and steaks are cooked on a grill housed under the hood of a 1971 Chevy Blazer. Well you don’t see that every day! I ordered vegetarian tacos.

Palm trees wrapped in green lights, wear bandannas as if they are about to rob the patrons. Bandido’s Grill opens at 5 pm and is closed on Wednesdays.

Day 4 – Snorkeling with Sea Lions Los Islotes, Kayaking Espiritu Santo Island, Anzuelo

Today is a full day of adventure on the water. Following breakfast at Posada LunaSol, you will be fitted for life jackets, snorkel gear (mask, snorkel, fins and wet-suit) for your day of snorkeling with sea lions Los Islotes and kayaking Espiritu Santo Island

Los Islotes Sea lions

Walk the short distance to the marina with your naturalist guide to the Mar Y Aventuras boat headed to Los Islotes.

Once heading out to the Sea of Cortez, you will pass Balandra Bay, famous for its white sand beaches and Mushroom Rock.

Mushroom Rock Balandra Beach

Arriving at Los Islotes, dozens of adult sea lions lounge on the jagged rocks of this tiny rock island. With no disembarking allowed on the shores, they show no fear. At best a raised head as the giants roll over in the warm sun.

Sea lions Los Islotes

In contrast, the pups, or yearlings, busily perform underwater acrobatics. Like toddlers rushing about on the playground, these young sea lions put on an impressive show of their sleek aquatic maneuvers.

A buffet lunch is provided at the Mar Y Aventuras camp on Espiritu Santo Island. Walk from the boat through the clear, turquoise water to a tranquil setting on the Sea of Cortez.

Following lunch, more like a feast, the afternoon is spent kayaking the bays and mangroves near Espiritu Santo Island. No previous kayaking experience is required and all gear is provided for this Sea of Cortez kayaking experience.

Dinner tonight at Anzuelo Cocino Del Mar on the La Paz marina. With a varied menu of seafood, pizza, burgers and vegetarian options, there is something for everyone’s taste. I recommend the cauliflower taco with guacamole and Pico de Gallo with mango.

Day 5 – Options La Paz Mexico travel – Posada LunaSol , Coffee Koka, La Paz Golf, Shopping, El Mangle

Option 1 – The only Gary Player Signature golf course in Mexico, the Cortes Golf Club offers a challenging round for the golfers in your group. Lush grass, irrigated with recycled water, surrounded by panoramic views of desert and sea make this a must for golf lovers visiting La Paz Mexico.

Option 2- Rest day. After breakfast pull up a recliner and lounge by the pool at Posada LunaSol .  Or read and relax on the third floor terrace gazing out to the sea.

Hammock Posada LunaSol

Take a two block walk to the little known gem  Coffee Kok a at the corner of corner of Topete and Manuel Encinas. One of the least expensive spots we found in La Paz, it is open from  6 am – 2 pm. Monday to Saturday.

Cafe Koko La Paz Mexico

Coffee Koka La Paz Mexico

The menu is in Spanish, so it took us a couple of visits to order Licuados con leche. Choose from banana, papaya or strawberry and this scrumptious smoothie made from fresh fruit is yours for 35 pesos ($1.85).

Mural Cafe Koko La Paz

Option 3 – There are many shopping opportunities in La Paz and the front desk staff can assist in recommendations. We suggest exploring off the Malecón, as the prices tend to be higher on the main walking area.

Shop with the locals three blocks off the Malecón. Using the corner of Revolucion de 1910 Street and Santos Degollado as a starting point, explore a large block of shops and sidewalk stalls.

El Mangle Restaurant La Paz Mexico

Walk from Posada LunaSol to dinner at El Mangle (Tacos and Mariscos) . Recommended to us by locals, this is another little known gem to the tourist crowd.  The tiny restaurant has two small seating areas and is only open until 8 pm.

Try the specialty ceviche El Mangle tuna, avocado, mango, cilantro, red onion and some special spices from culinary heaven.  Or sample a Cameron (shrimp) shot. In an over-sized shot glass, delicious shrimp swim in Clamato juice, with a spicy cream concoction on the bottom.

Day 6 – Cycling, Walking, Murals, Cultural Centre

Posada LunaSol has bicycles available for guests with advance notice. A  flat riding experience awaits on the bike path next to the Malecón. Walking or running on the wide pedestrian way is an excellent alternative.

Cycling malecon La Paz Mexico

Cycling the clearly designated bike lanes in La Paz Mexico

Cycle or walk to the Cultural Centre (Centro Cultual La Paz ). Known as the old city hall to those who live in La Paz, the Cultural Centre was opened in 2010. While visiting we are told it is “La Casa del Pueblo” or the people’s house where everyone is welcome.

Art Gallery La Paz Mexico

On the second floor an air conditioned art gallery awaits. At the time of our visit an intriguing display of Gray whales greets us. Admission is free and donations are gratefully accepted.

Off of the open courtyard, on the ground level, historical displays explain the development of La Paz and area.

Murals La Paz Mexico

One of many murals to be discovered in La Paz

Return to Posada LunaSol. For lunch walk a few blocks to Mariscos El Toro Guero Seafood Restaurant  at the Corner of Calzada Mariano Abasolo and Calle Sinaloa. Look for the massive, yellow Pacifico sign.

Your biggest challenge will be deciding from the enormous menu, which thankfully comes in an English version. Filled with locals, the vibe is upbeat. Local musicians play and ask for tips. They do request permission before serenading your table.

Musicians La Paz Mexico

The portions are large and we recommend sharing an order of anything on the menu.

I ordered weathered fish tacos, which translated to a school of tempura fish smothering three tortillas hidden beneath the dishpan portion. Served with rice, mashed potatoes and salad in case you haven’t eaten in a week.

Huge portions at Mariscos El Toro Guero Seafood Restaurant

An order of ‘weathered tacos’

Shellfish Molcajete with scallops, served in a lava bowl, is a more reasonably portion sized option. For those who want to try all manner of sea creatures look for this.

Enjoy your final afternoon in La Paz. Relax by the pool, chat with the staff who now are friends or pack for the journey home.

If you can possibly eat any more, take an evening, sunset stroll on the Malecón to Bismarck . The ‘Lobster House’ has been in business since 1968. The menu offers variety of seafood, as well as steak, pizzas and hamburgers. This was the most expensive meal of our stay in La Paz.

Day 7 – Todos Santos – San Jose Del Cabo

Farewell to a beautiful week as your La Paz Mexico travel itinerary finishes. Book your shuttle to the airport through the front desk, leaving enough time for a stop in pretty Todos Santos . Have lunch at Hotel California but don’t expect the prices to resemble those in La Paz. After lunch the drive is approximately 1.5 hours on México 19 to San Jose del Cabo airport.

What a fantastic place, wow! I love all the brilliant colours and scenery. The weathered tacos look yummy, Sue! The snorkeling photo with sea lions is incredible, looks like a beautiful underwater canyon. Wow! ❤️🌴😎

John so many things you have touched on as to why we love La Paz and area. Such a variety of activities and not as touristy as many destinations. I love those vibrant shades. Makes me smile just thinking about it. As to those sea lions just incredible swimming with them. So curious and playful.

Such an awesome place, it is definitely on my wish list. You itinerary is fantastic, I love how detailed it is. You have put a lot of work into this post. A must read for anyone contemplating this trip. I will be keeping it for future reference, thank you 😄

Gilda you made our day with your feedback. Yes a lot of work to put it together but we have had feedback from readers that having an itinerary like this makes planning super easy. La Paz would definitely be one of our recommendations if you visit Baja Mexico. Not as touristy as Cabo San Lucas but with so much adventure and culture available. Feel free to message us if you ever plan a trip and have specific questions.

Wonderful place- can hardly wait to return! Posada LunaSol is a fantastic hotel to venture from by foot, bicycle, cab, shuttle or boat for 1/2 day, full day or multi-day adventures.

Sharon we definitely agree that Posada LunaSol is an excellent location. Not having to worry about transportation every day is such a plus. We too look forward to future trips too!

What a great itinerary and I’m so glad you were able to fit in Todos Santos as I just love it there. Hotel California was closed when I was there so I’m glad to see it is up and running again. The food looks amazing and now I am hungry for fish tacos or a Cameron (shrimp) shot, or anything Mexican. A great post.

Happy to get your mouth watering Darlene! Definitely lots of day trips are possible from La Paz including Todos Santos. Thanks so much for the kind feedback. Truly appreciated.

Denise we had a marvellous time in La Paz by land and by sea!

Wow, what an awesome itinerary! You really put quite a bit of work into this. Thank you! Definitely putting this on my bucket list.

Laura we admit this type of post is a huge undertaking but is always popular over the long term. I know we find it helpful when planning a trip to find these types of articles. I hope one day you will find it useful!

What a great place for a holiday, Sue. So much to do, see and eat. I think those tacos and the seafood have my name on them. 😃

Sylvia so many delicious options in La Paz. I think I recall seeing your name right on the plates. 🙂 We have loved each of our times in La Paz.

Quite lovely, Sue. A good post filled with great suggestions and colorful photos. –Curt

Thank you Curt. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

It looks like there’s plenty to do to fill in a week or more. I love the look of your hotel.

Posada LunaSol is one of our favourite hotels anywhere in the world. quaint, colourful and the staff making you feel like its home away from home.

This looks like an amazing trip Sue and Dave!! I love the mushroom rock and the colourful buildings, it all looked so cheery and fun!

Nothing like all of that colour in the middle of our Canadian winter Debbie. It was a fabulous week and since we have been there three times I guess that says how much we love La Paz!

Wonderful post, never heard of La Paz before but it looks fabulous. What a great little hotel and the sea and beaches look so inviting. Great location for a weeks break with just about everything available.

Jonno happy to introduce you to this lesser known Mexican City. We love that there is so much to do in La Paz there and that it is not over rrun with tourists. Quite selfish of us actually being tourists ourselves. 🙂

Sue, what a wonderful place to visit. There looks to be so much to see and do. Your itinerary is superb but I’m afraid I would probably forgo all else for a food tour based on your highlights of the food on offer. Yum!

Shannyn if you like seafood then La Paz definitely is a perfect destination. Thank you for the kind feedback about the itinerary. Happy to share all of our adventures.

Thank you so much for sharing a day-to-day itenerary at La Paz, Mexico. Three times to Mexico is quite a few time to have been there, and I am sure each time you go there, the more familiar you become with the place. I am sure the person paid to take photos at the museum would be a good photographer – but since the admission fee is already 45 pesos, agree with you having your own photographer, you might be able to afford another trip to the museum another time. Also really enjoyed your experience with Oscar’s bakery, and lovely you got up close to see him making dough and bread. Hard at work, must taste very good and hope you devoured that bag of treats 🙂

Amazing blue waters and sea lions around Los Islotes. It looked like every perfect sunny beach day. That look on your face at Mariscos El Toro Guero Seafood Restaurant! The weathered fish tacos could have taken you for a walk 😀

Mabel we always so appreciate your detailed comments! We have been to Mexico many times, but three to La Paz. It is unusual for us to return to the same place when we travel so that in itself says quite a lot. Finding Oscar’s bakery was one of the true delights of this trip. We certainly devoured the treats and smiled thinking of that traditional way in which they were made. We have had the pleasure of twice snorkeling with those cheeky sea lions. They were so curious and in the video I just love how one of them comes to investigate Dave’s GoPro. I laughed out loud at your suggestion that my tacos could have taken me for a walk. That is for sure!

I knew the Place by name, I never had seen any photos showing how it is! gorgeous Place, fantastic photos. What about safety? Was it safe to shoot photos everywhere?

Happy Sunday!

Good question! A very safe place. We walked everywhere in this itinerary. You often see police cruising about but they never seem to have to do anything as we didn’t see any concerning activity.

This looks amazing Sue! I have dreamed of swimming with Whale Sharks! Thanks for the great itinerary. Maybe something fun to do with my family!

Definitely would be a great thing for the family as well as the Gray whale watching we did before our time in La Paz.

I love how you have given us the perfect itinerary! Swimming with whale sharks had to be fabulous! What a fabulous memory for you all!

Looks like you felt safe being there… that is always my concern about Mexico.

Definitely very safe. We walked everywhere including in the evenings. There is an obvious police presence but we never saw them needing to do anything.

Thoroughly enjoyed this festive and comprehensive look at La Paz Mexico, Sue and Dave. So much vibrant color, natural beauty, cheerful spirit, and fun. The itinerary looks great, too. I enjoyed the photos (Sue’s expressive face with the weathered tacos gave me chuckle), the murals (love that octopus mural especially), sculptures, food, adventures. The video was wonderful with all the adventures and sights. I was especially dazzled by those whale sharks and that fantastic spotting pattern on their backs. Thanks so much to both of you.

Jet we so appreciate your kind and detailed feedback. Knowing your love of wildlife, I think the whale sharks would be especially interesting. Just jaw dropping to see them swim by. We rarely return to destinations so having been to La Paz three times says a great deal about how much we love it.

The weathered tacos looks like a serious serving Sue! I love how this place feels awash in nature.

That plate could have fed the entire table!

Wow, beautiful weather, swimming, scenery, and food-food-food! Sounds like my kind of trip – my mouth is watering! 🙂

Diane I think we could have spent our time just eating! So much delicious fresh seafood no to mention all of the tasty treats. Likely good we didn’t discover the bakery too early in the trip. 🙂

I may have to look into this! I bet it’s an easy trip from Houston. LOVE the colorful hotel!

Lexie I would definitely recommend this sweet spot. This was our base for the whale watching trip too.

What a blessing a blog is! Yours is so detailed and generous that you will never forget the joys of this beautiful holiday.

Thank you for the kind words. La Paz is a wonderful city to explore.

Now you’ve convinced The Captain that we need to sail to La Paz. He’s coming for the sea life but I also love street art and the musicians. Wonderful video footage.

Well that is wonderful to hear! We love the Baja and La Paz is much more laid back compared to Cabo. Dave sends his thanks regarding the video.

Hi I love this post thank you. I am visiting La Paz in a few weeks and after reading about Oscars Bakery Im dying to go. I cant seem to locate the address though. Ive tried googling it several different ways. Do you have any additional information as Calle Sinaloa and Calle Nayarit are long streets. Thank you.

Michelle I don’t have the exact address but if you look at our map, right under the Table of Contents, on the right hand you will see the location for ‘Seis O Bakery’ which is Oscar’s Bakery. Also the second photo, after the one of Oscar himself, shows the exterior of the bakery with the sign. I hope with that you will be able to find it. I’d also ask the locals who live in the area. this is definitely not a tourist destination but rather a local hidden gem. I’ll be hoping you get there!

Thank you so much I really appreciate it!!

You are most welcome!

What time of year have you gone? My partner and I were thinking of going in February but then I read that it was pretty windy that time of year so we were going to go in April instead. Do you think that’s an okay time to go if we really love warm weather and swimming in the ocean?

Sorry for the delayed response. We are actually just back from La Paz and kayaking in the area. I’ll be updating this post with a few changes. I just did a quick search on the internet and the water temps are still a bit cooler in April but the average air temp is 32C. You will want to do some research as to what kinds of things you want to do in the area. For instance my understanding is that the whale sharks arrive in late fall to feed but are not there year round. You could contact the company we use Mar Y Aventuras to ask specifics if that is helpful.

Hi thank you for sharing your experiences and recommendations. It’s very helpful. What are the entry requirements for Canadian and US citizens to enter Mexico by air? Have you heard of the FMM form?

About La Paz Mexico

If I had to choose one place to go in Baja California Sur, it would be La Paz.

Amazing food, wonderful atmosphere, beautiful beaches, desert mountains, rich oceans – it really does have it all!

The state’s capital city, La Paz feels less like a city and more like a large town. It has a friendly, local feel and the waterfront location brings a seaside flavour to the city.

Although La Paz has all the right ingredients for a great holiday destination, it is a far cry from the overdeveloped resort cities of Los Cabos and has remained an off-the-radar, underrated option for the bulk of tourists visiting Baja Sur.

Spending time here offers a more authentic Mexican experience, and you can get a much better insight into real life in Baja outside of the resorts.

We spent over two weeks in La Paz, sampling the best fish tacos, exploring stunning beaches, swimming with whale sharks and cycling the Malecon.

In this guide, I’ll share everything you need to know to plan your own visit to La Paz.

Our experience in La Paz

We absolutely loved La Paz!

We’re not usually city people, and much prefer to be in smaller towns or natural settings.

But La Paz has got to be one of the best-positioned cities in the world! I have never been to a city that is surrounded by so much pristine nature, right on its doorstep.

One of the world’s best beaches is just up the road. The city is orientated towards the beautiful Bay of La Paz and is surrounded by layers of desert mountains of the Sierra de la Laguna.

I guess it helps that it is a small city, that has a real local feel to it.

We really enjoyed getting a glimpse into the life of typical Mexican families, compared to Los Cabos, which was full of tourists.

The typical scene in La Paz was of local families out and about together, teenagers skating or having rap battles on the Malecon, and people running or walking their dogs.

The city caters primarily to its residents, and secondly to its tourists, which is how we think it should be!

We had planned to stay in La Paz for 5 – 7 nights. But we actually contracted COVID here and needed to isolate. So we ended up staying in the city for 16 nights. Of course, we were locked away for some of this time, but we feel like we got a really good feel for the area.

Where is La Paz, Baja California Sur?

La Paz is located in the state of Baja California Sur, on the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico.

Situated in the southern part of the state, La Paz is actually the capital city of Baja California Sur.

This is not to be confused with the city of La Paz in Bolivia! Be very careful when searching online to plan your trip, as many results will show up for this South American city.

It is situated on the east side of the peninsula, on the Sea of Cortez (aka the Gulf of California).

To put it in perspective, here are some rough driving distances to La Paz:

  • Tijuana:  19 hours
  • Loreto : 4 hours
  • Los Cabos:  2 hours

La Paz Mexico Travel Guide: Baja's Underrated Capital

Getting to La Paz

La Paz has its own international airport, LAP – La Paz International Airport , officially the Aeropuerto Internacional Manuel Márquez de León.

The airport mostly serves domestic routes within Mexico. However, if you’re coming from the east of the country (Cancun, Merida etc.) you’ll most likely need to transit in Mexico City.

American Airlines runs a handful of routes from cities in the US, such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas and San Francisco.

The SJD – Los Cabos International Airport in Los Cabos is better connected internationally. If La Paz is one part of a broader Baja California Sur trip, you’ll probably find more frequent and affordable options from this airport.

🚐 GETTING FROM LA PAZ AIRPORT INTO TOWN

The airport is only about 20 minutes from the centre of town, and taking a taxi is the easiest and cheapest way.

There is a taxi booth within the airport, with set prices for different hotels. You pay upfront and take your ticket outside to where taxis are waiting, avoiding any unwanted bartering or negotiations.

Uber and DiDi do work in La Paz and supposedly can pick you up at the airport. But this is always a touchy arrangement and often rideshare drivers won’t enter the airport. Plus, if you’re arriving internationally you may not have a local SIM card set up yet.

If you’d prefer to have something pre-booked and not have to worry about navigating foreign currency or Spanish as soon as you land, you can use a private airport shuttle .

🚐 GETTING FROM LOS CABOS AIRPORT TO LA PAZ

If you’ve flown into Los Cabos but your first destination is La Paz, there are a number of ways to make the 2-hour journey:

  • 🚗 Rental car – I will mention more about this below, but we recommend renting a car for your time in La Paz. If you’re planning to rent, you can pick up your car at the airport in Los Cabos and drive yourself to La Paz. The trip takes approximately 2 hours on a well-made, safe highway. Browse for rental cars from Los Cabos airport .
  • 🚐 Private shuttle – if you’re a larger group, or just looking for something quick and comfortable, you can organise a private shuttle from Los Cabos Airport to your accommodation in La Paz. This is a good option with Terramar Transfers .
  • 🚐 Shared shuttle – Los Cabos Airport offers shared shuttles between the airport and hotels in the La Paz downtown area. This seems to be a relatively new service in 2023 and I don’t know much about it. However, it looks like a better option than EcoBaja Tours which has a poor booking system and bad customer reviews.
  • 🚌 Aguila bus – the Aguila buses are comfortable long-distance inter-city buses that travel all over Baja. They run a service from the airport in Los Cabos to La Paz. You can see the schedule and book tickets online here .

La Paz is well-connected to neighbouring cities around the Baja Peninsula via the Aguila bus .

The buses are new and comfortable long-distance buses, and you can book your tickets online via the Aguila website .

There are two different Aguila bus stops within the city, one on the Malecon and one downtown in Serdan .

If you’re driving around Baja California Sur , La Paz is easy to navigate from a number of other popular destinations via well-made highways.

Loreto to the north is approximately 4 hours, Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are around 2 – 2.5 hours, and Todos Santos is 1.5 hours away.

It’s possible to travel to La Paz via ferry from mainland Mexico.

Baja Ferries runs routes between La Paz and Topolobampo, Sinaloa and La Paz and Mazatlan, Sinaloa.

Both trips are overnight journeys and you can reserve a berth or sleeper seat.

If you’re travelling around Mexico by car, this is the quickest way to get your vehicle between the mainland and the Baja Peninsula.

The ferries depart from Pichilingue port , about 20 minutes north of La Paz town.

Getting around La Paz

Do you need a car in la paz mexico.

You probably would have seen me repeatedly suggest that having your own rental car is the best way to get around Baja California Sur.

Whilst I do strongly believe this, La Paz is probably the one place where you could survive without one.

If La Paz is your only destination in Baja, then you could skip the rental car.

Many of the popular things to do can only be done via an organised tour (e.g. boat-related activities) where you wouldn’t use a car anyway.

The city centre and Malecon are walkable, and you can use taxis, rideshares or the local bus to substitute for any other activities.

In saying this, having a rental car is always going to be the most convenient way to get around. Especially if La Paz isn’t your only stop in Baja California Sur.

Getting a rental car and road-tripping is the best way to see the state.

This gives you the best opportunity to see all the highlights that aren’t as easily accessible outside of La Paz, and a lot more freedom and flexibility within La Paz.

Whilst the city centre is walkable, many of the best beaches are on the outskirts of town, and it’s a beautiful place to simply drive around and get lost, with spectacular scenery.

You can pick up a rental car from La Paz if that is your first stop in the state. Or, as I mentioned, you might choose to fly into Los Cabos Airport and drive yourself into La Paz.

🚗 Check prices and availability for rental cars in La Paz here

The centro and Malecon areas are easy enough to get around on foot.

If you choose a centrally located accommodation, you should be able to walk to all the popular sites within the city, and the best taco spots and restaurants.

You can also rent bicycles, scooters or rollerblades if you want to speed things up a little! We recommend City Bike on the Malecon.

By taxi/rideshare

If walking is getting too hot or too far, there are taxis and rideshares available.

DiDi is starting to dominate Uber as the preferred local option. Rideshare is generally cheaper and easier to order via an app, but taxis are all over the city too.

La Paz has a limited and complicated local bus system. It’s one of the only places in Baja California Sur that does, and we didn’t master it ourselves (we had a rental car).

The main bus that is of use to tourists is the Playa Bus, which runs from the  La Paz Malecon Bus Station to the beaches out of town like Balandra and Tecolote.

After some intense research, I think I have found the most current timetable. The Playa Bus service is run by EcoBajaTours and you can  see a photo of the timetable on their Facebook page .

It only shows the times for one direction, but as far as I understand the bus turns around and returns approximately 45 minutes later.

It’s best to pop your head into the bus station on the Malecon for the current times the day before you plan to use the bus.

The best time to visit La Paz

La Paz has a typical Baja California Sur desert climate with dry, warm winters and scorching summers.

Although there is little rain year-round, the driest season and best time to visit is between November – April .

These are the cooler winter months that experience mostly dry, sunny days with blue skies and pleasant temperatures. The only drawback of winter is that the water temperature can be cool (approx. 68°F / 20°C), and there are occasionally strong northerly winds that can interfere with boat trips.

May – July can still be a good time to visit La Paz if your main focus is on swimming and water activities. Do know that the temperatures can soar well over 95°F (35°C).

The wettest months are typically August – October , but it doesn’t rain heavily every year. Hurricanes and large storms generally only hit every few years.

If you’re anything like us, you’ll be planning your trip to La Paz around all the amazing wildlife encounters you can have. These are the seasons to keep in mind:

  • 🐋 Whale sharks – 1 October – 30 April, however, the season can start late pending government announcements.
  • 🦭 Sea lions – September – May. Swimming is banned during June, July and August for the breeding season.

How long to spend in La Paz

With so many things to do in La Paz , you could easily spend at least a week here.

It depends if La Paz is just one part of a broader Baja California Sur itinerary or the sole destination for your vacation.

I would definitely suggest no less than 5 nights minimum in either case.

One day to be spent at Isla Espiritu Santo, one day at Balandra Beach, one day to do the whale sharks and a day or two to explore the city itself, cycle the Malecon and possibly hit up some of the other beaches.

I think you could easily stretch this to 10 days or even two weeks, with downtime included and possibly some day trips to nearby areas like La Ventana or Todos Santos .

Is La Paz Mexico safe?

Despite not being as well known as the popular tourist destination of Los Cabos, La Paz is perfectly safe.

Safety is subjective, and everyone has their own view on what they consider ‘safe’, but as frequent travellers, we felt totally safe in La Paz.

There is such a lovely local vibe here, and we felt welcome and at ease.

Parts of La Paz did feel more like a typical city, with a bit of grunge, some homelessness and a few strange people wandering around. But it was no worse than our home city of Melbourne, and we never felt unsafe, or even uncomfortable.

Basically the further you get from the Malecon, the more likely you are to encounter the scruffy side of the city.

The city of La Paz and their dedicated tourist police want to keep the area safe, clean and welcoming for tourists, and you can feel this effort when you’re there.

The city doesn’t experience any of the drug-related crime or violence found in other parts of the country. If you take normal safety precautions, you will have a safe and enjoyable time in La Paz Mexico.

The only thing to note in relation to safety is about driving. The traffic rules work quite differently in La Paz, so just be alert and cautious when driving.

I actually got a fine from a traffic policewoman for not correctly following the stop signs. It’s a weird system and I’ve actually heard of a fair few tourists being fined (read more about it in my driving in Baja post).

The entire process was friendly and not scary or overwhelming. The policewoman was kind and patient and took the time to translate with our then-limited Spanish. There was none of the bribing or corruption you hear about in other parts of Mexico, and I safely went to visit the central police station to pay my fine and be on my way!

Where to stay in La Paz

There is a great range of accommodation options in La Paz Mexico for all budgets.

Whilst you will find resort-style accommodations on the beachfront on the outskirts of the city (such as Costa Baja or Hyatt Place ), we would definitely recommend basing yourself in the city centre.

Anywhere within short walking distance to the Malecon is a great spot, and means you will be at the heart of the action.

Hostel Casa Esterito

If you’re looking for a hostel, Casa Esterito gets great reviews from travellers.

The location is perfect, just steps from the northern end of the Malecon.

The hostel is small and intimate, with just two private rooms and three 6-bed dorm rooms. Each room comes with all the creature comforts, like hot water, air conditioning and wifi.

There is a cute outdoor garden area with a restaurant, and a light breakfast of coffee and fruit is included each day.

La Paz Mexico Travel Guide: Baja's Underrated Capital

Casa Canona

We found Casa Canona on Airbnb, and we absolutely loved this gorgeous complex.

The beautiful old house in La Paz was converted firstly into a café, and more recently four self-contained studio apartments were added.

A family project, two brothers bought the property from their grandmother and have lovingly restored it.

The apartments are beautifully designed and are amazing value at a very affordable price.

Located in downtown La Paz, Casa Canona is within walking distance from the Malecon and all the best restaurants.

Hotel Catedral

One of the most iconic hotels in La Paz, Hotel Catedral is a charming option in the historic centre.

As the name suggests, Hotel Catedral overlooks the cathedral from its gorgeous rooftop pool and patio area. There is a bar on this level shaking up delicious cocktails too!

Rooms are clean, modern and spacious with basic amenities. A buffet breakfast is included, and there are a number of other communal outdoor spaces downstairs too.

An exposed rooftop patio area with lounges, chairs, tables and umbrellas at Hotel Catedral in La Paz Mexico

Baja Club Hotel

For something a little fancier, the Baja Club Hotel is a newly opened boutique hotel on the Malecon.

Housed in a restored colonial mansion, the hotel features a central courtyard and pool, a restaurant and bar, and a rooftop terrace overlooking the Sea of Cortez.

It has a stunning minimalist design that preserves the building’s history with modern touches. Browse the photos, I’m sure you’ll be oohing and aahing if you’re a design lover.

It would be our top choice if our budget was a little higher!

Top things to do in La Paz

There are so many amazing things to do in La Paz. So much so that I’ve got an entire post dedicated to the 25 best things to do in La Paz !

As with all destinations, there are an endless number of activities you can find to fill your days. But if we’re talking about the absolutely unmissable, top activities that you can only do in La Paz, here’s our top five.

1. Visit Balandra Beach

Frequently crowned as Mexico’s best beach, Balandra is actually a bay home to seven different beaches! Sheltered from the Sea of Cortez, these shallow, translucent waters drop at low tide to reveal a pattern of swirling white sandbanks, it’s simply stunning.

Floating in these calm waters was a dream, and we also dedicated a few hours of our day to hiking the cacti-covered trails on the hills around the bay for some incredible views.

However, a day at the beach is not as simple as it seems, with strict capacity limits in place to preserve the fragile natural area. Read our Balandra guide for the latest rules and entry times.

🏖️ Read our complete guide to Balandra Beach

2. Swim with whale sharks

Baja is home to some incredible marine encounters. None more thrilling than swimming next to the biggest fish in the sea!

Each year between October – May, whale sharks come to feed on nutrient-rich waters in the Bay of La Paz.

You can take a tour with a trained and certified operator to swim alongside these gentle giants.

The program is tightly controlled by the government, and we were impressed with how ethical the experience was.

3. Boat tour to Isla Espiritu Santo

The jewel in the Sea of Cortez, Isla Espiritu Santo is a UNESCO World Heritage Listed island.

Translating to Holy Spirit Island in English, Espiritu Santo is everything that’s good about Baja – crystal clear waters, stunning beaches, a red-hued desert landscape and thriving marine life.

Best known for its colony of playful sea lions, taking a boat tour to the island for the day is a must-do in La Paz.

There are a number of different tours available. Most include snorkelling with sea lions at their colony at Los Islotes, lunch on a pristine beach on the island, and free time to relax, hike some trails, snorkel some more, and on selected tours, kayak or SUP.

🦭 Book your tour to Isla Espiritu Santo

4. Hang out on the Malecon

As with many seaside cities in Mexico, the heart of La Paz is its Malecon, or waterfront promenade.

Running for over 5 km / 3.1 mi along the coast, we spent a lot of our time in La Paz hanging out on the Malecon. It’s a great place for a stroll, a run, people watching and just generally soaking up the atmosphere.

Spot the statues and artwork, take your photo in front of the iconic La Paz letters and don’t miss an evening sunset! Do as the local families do and enjoy an ice cream from La Fuente , and watch the myriad of street performers, Zumba classes and teenage rap battles!

We also recommend renting a bike for the day from City Bikes and riding the entire length of the Malecon. It ends at Playa El Coromuel in the north, which is a gorgeous beach worth checking out.

Sally sitting on a bike in front of a row of palm trees on the waterfront Malecon path in La Paz Mexico

5. Explore the centro

Whilst the Malecon is the undisputed hub of La Paz, the historic centre away from the water is just as worthy of exploring.

It’s this part of La Paz that reminds you it is a ‘city’, even if it is a small one.

We loved watching talented street performers in Jardin Velasco , admiring the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de La Paz and the pretty white-washed Museo de Arte .

La Paz is also full of colourful and clever street art, depicting the history, society and environment of the area. We spent an afternoon following this self-guided street art map and taking photos of all the murals. My favourites were all the marine life. See if you can find the whale, the dolphins, the multi-colour turtle and the sea lion!

Beaches in La Paz

Balandra is an extra special beach worthy of its own mention, but there are so many other amazing beaches around La Paz worth visiting, without the crowds!

Here are a few of our favourites:

  • Playa El Coromuel  is just a short bike ride along the Malecon and has a restaurant on the beach, palapas for shade and bathroom facilities.
  • Playa El Tesoro is a short drive north along the coast. This beach feels sheltered inside its own bay with shallow waters that stretch for miles. There is a small restaurant on the sand.
  • Playa El Tecolote  is the closest beach to Balandra, and sits at the northern end of the small peninsula, meaning the waves are a little rougher here. The beach is lined with restaurants, lounges and palapas and feels the most developed.
  • Playa El Saltito  is a different alternative, and all the locals we met suggested it. Located on the east of the peninsula, this beach isn’t protected by the Bay of La Paz and the waves here are strong. But the scenery is incredible, the beach is quiet and the drive here through the mountains is stunning.

Sustainable travel in La Paz

Most of the best things to do in La Paz involve nature and wildlife. For this reason, it’s really important to do your research when selecting a tour company to book with. Whether you’re swimming with whale sharks, paddleboarding around Balandra Bay or diving with sea lions, you want to know the company respects the environment and wildlife and follows all rules and regulations. Take the time to read tour operators’ websites. Check if they have environmental policies and rules. Do they try and reduce waste? Do they have restrictions on interactions with wildlife? It’s easy to get a gut feeling about whether the operator is prioritising the environment or prioritising profits.

Where to eat in La Paz

La Paz has some delicious food options that are very very affordable compared to the more touristy places in Baja. The tacos here are top-notch, and the seafood doesn’t get much fresher!

Asadero Rancho Viejo

If you’re looking for steak tacos, you can’t go past Asadero Rancho Viejo.

Cooked fresh to order on a grill on the street out the front of the restaurant, you smell it before you see it.

This was my first introduction to arrachera tacos. Arrachera translates as skirt steak, which differs from the more popular carne asada which can be any kind of grilled beef. It is so melt-in-your-mouth delicious, that we went back three times!

📍 See the location and opening hours here

La Paz has a reputation for amazing fish tacos. But as for where does them best, it’s up for debate.

Mc-Fisher is a top contender though and serves up not just fish but a diverse range of seafood tacos. They have prawn, octopus, clam, scallop, oyster and more!

You get a tray of salads and salsas delivered to your table and can create your own delicious tacos.

El Estadio Tacos de Pescado

Another contender for best fish tacos in La Paz, El Estadio doesn’t look like much from the outside.

Just a simple street stall, you first need to line up and order from one of two options – pescado (fish) or camaron (shrimp). Both are typical Baja-style battered, crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside.

You then take your handwritten ticket to the grill, where your harina (flour) tortillas will be lightly toasted and seafood dished up.

Finally, you can head for the salad bar, with a huge array of all types of sauces, spicy and creamy, and a big range of all kinds of salads and vegetables.

These were our favourite fish tacos in La Paz, and well worth a try!

Tacos de la Monarka

Tacos de la Monarka is a hidden gem, tucked away a few streets back from the busy Malecon.

This was the first place we ever tried a papa rellena which is basically the Mexican version of a baked potato. Topped with all kinds of goodies, and a meat of your choice.

We got ours topped with carne asada, and it was absolutely mouth-watering. Cheesy potato, soft meat, and all the salsas and salads on top, ahh I’m drooling just writing about it!

The tacos here are great too, with classic options like al pastor and carne asasda.

Doce Cuarenta Coffee & Bakery

For good coffee in La Paz, head to Doce Cuarenta.

This café and bakery is housed in a large, industrial-style building and gave us big Melbourne vibes. The perfect spot for digital nomads to spend a few hours working away on their laptops.

They roast their coffee on-site, and you’ll get a whole lot more than just an Americano.

All the pastries are absolutely delicious, but if you’re hungry for a meal they have some yummy sweet and savoury brunch options.

La Fuente Heladeria

If there is one thing La Paz locals love, it’s ice cream. And La Fuente is at the heart of this obsession!

Sitting right on the Malecon, this ice cream shop has a line out the door at all hours of the day.

They have all kinds of flavours to choose from, both nieve (ice cream) and paletas (icy poles/popsicles).

Grabbing an ice cream and watching the sunset from the Malecon is a quintessential La Paz experience!

Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in La Paz, Mexico

The capital of Baja California Sur, La Paz has plenty to offer: warm weather year around, a reinvigorated esplanade bustling with locals, vivid blue waters resting on white sand beaches, and in recent years, a slew of new hotels opened in historic buildings and an exceptional modern restaurant scene rooted in fine seafood products caught locally. Here, in the arid landscape sprinkled with giant cacti, the tourist infrastructure rivals nearby Cabo San Lucas with a more relaxed crowd, and a provincial vibe that feels like Mexico, uninterrupted by international tourism.

There’s plenty to do in the greater municipality of La Paz, which includes the art community of Todos Santos, world class sport fishing in Los Barriles, and a charming former mining town, El Triunfo, but we say, head first to La Paz—it might just be your favorite stop in Baja California Sur.

When to visit

Visit from November to April when the average temperatures range from the low to mid-80’s and cooler waters attract whale sharks and whales, or from May to September for peak fishing season and warmer waters for swimming and scuba diving. Make your hotel reservations early if you plan to visit January to March, which is peak season in La Paz.

Getting to La Paz

Some Southwestern U.S. cities, including Phoenix and Dallas, have direct flights on American Airlines to La Paz. Alternatively, the Los Cabos International Airport has direct flights from a number of major cities in the U.S., including Los Angeles and Chicago, and is a two-hour drive away. We suggest renting a car to make the drive if you’re planning to visit other towns in the municipality—alternatively, Todos Santos Private Transportation has a fleet of white Suburbans and Sprinters driven by chauffeurs. Taxis and buses are also an option for getting around in La Paz, and heading out of town.

Where to eat

Let's face it—this is the real reason you're here. Paceño (of La Paz) cuisine ranges from humble seafood stands, market stalls, and antojitos (snacks made from masa), to upscale experiences in laid-back settings—with a number of avoidable tourist trap bars and grills scattered throughout. You’ll need reservations for most sit-down restaurants during high season, though the chef-led spots listed below require advance reservations year round.

Casual eats

When you’ve just arrived in La Paz, hungry, the best introduction to the city is a hate: a robust regional bacon-wrapped hot dog topped with carne deshebrada (stewed beef), nacho cheese, and loads of diced tomatoes, avocado slices. There are great spots all over town but Hates El Curra , just outside the MUABCS on the corner of Belisario Domínguez and Independencia, is delicious and convenient.

To get your casual seafood fix, hit Mariscos El Empanada for sweet, firm chocolata clams, a regional delicacy named for their coffee-colored shells, served in a seafood cocktail or au gratin. Visit Taco Fish La Paz for beer battered fish and shrimp tacos, deep-fried tacos dorados stuffed with crab and stingray, and mouthwatering smoked marlin empanadas dressed with a light coleslaw—a local fish taco topping unique to La Paz. Filete imperial de camarón—grilled, bacon-wrapped shrimp stuffed with cheese and drowned in a cool cilantro dressing—is a celebrated local favorite at restaurants like Mc-Fisher.

Upscale experiences

In recent years, several notable Mexican chefs have opened in La Paz, joining Sonoran chef and pioneer of the fine dining culture of the capital of BCS, Carlos Valdez, of Tatanka Baja Fish & Steakhouse , and transforming the city into a destination for modern Mexican cuisine practically overnight. Takanka showcases Sonoran and American cuts of ribeye, prime tomahawk, and chateaubriand cooked on a Santa Maria grill, plus the best selection of local shellfish like abalone ceviche. Located inside the Hotel Casa al Mar, paceño chef Hector Palacios’s Origen La Paz prepares local seafood with clever applications of Mexican techniques, like the callo negro, a ceviche of pen-shell clams marinated in a smoky, spicy recaudo negro (a marinade of spices and blacked chiles) from the Yucatán, and a kanpachi tostada sweetened by baby heirloom tomatoes and dressed with a rich charred habanero salsa. The cocktail program is top notch—order the Dream and Tonic, a light, refreshing gin and tonic with pineapple and basil.

After working 10 years at Mexico City’s Pujol, and staging at El Cellar de Can Roca, chef Alex Villagómez opened Nemi in La Paz, an intimate space where dishes include grilled San Carlos shrimp plucked from across the Gulf of California on a bed of arroz a la tumbada, a Veracruz-style seafood rice dish that’s saucy as a risotto. The braised beef cheeks in a dark, fruity salsa are so tender they can be shredded with a spoon, while the crudo de pescado, raw fish flash cooked in ponzu and mezcal, has elegant notes of smoke, minerality, charred fruit, and nuts from salsa macha.

Lastly, an evening at Jazamango from acclaimed Baja California chef Javier Plascencia in Todos Santos is well worth the hour drive for plummy passionfruit aguachile (spicy shrimp ceviche), fire roasted lamb tacos, and local grilled fish marinated in garlic. The restaurant is a farm-to-table outdoor dining experience that draws on Plascencia’s lifetime as chef/restaurateur in Tijuana and the Valle de Guadalupe. But, first stop for drinks to quench your thirst at Bar El Minero in the budding town of El Triunfo, and make a lunch date at Lonchería La Garita on the way for supple ground beef empanadas, and juicy machaca burritos of house made machaca (beef jerky) wrapped in fluffy flour tortillas.

What else to do

The main attractions for visitors to the capital of Baja California Sur are primarily aquatic, so bring a bathing suit. Grey whales and whale sharks coexist in the bay from October to April, a great time to go out on whale watching day trips, and half-day excursions with licensed tour operators like The Cortez Club and Baja Adventure Co . Outside the city, Los Barriles is one of the top spots for kitesurfing—and don't worry if you're green, as outfitter Vela Baja offers a “Zero to Hero” class for beginners. If you prefer to be underwater, let Cortez Expeditions guide you snorkeling or scuba diving through thriving coral reefs, then visit the Isla de Espíritu Santo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can dive and snorkel with sea lions. The sport fishing scene in La Paz and Los Barriles yields yellowtail, amberjacks, marlins, groupers, and many more for making your own, fresh-from-the-sea fish tacos (enlist Captain Carlos Castro and his team at Los Barriles Sports Fishing to take you out).

Within town, there’s plenty of recreation on the recently expanded and invigorated malecón , or esplanade, full of of locals jogging, riding bikes, and skating. Art lovers should earmark an afternoon to spend at the Museo de Arte de Baja California Sur (MUABCS) , located in front of the Jardin Velasco, which was recently renovated by Mexican architect Jose Manuel Velasquez, and houses a permanent exhibit on the history of Baja California Sur, works by acclaimed Mexican artists like Javier Marín Claroscuro, and rotating installations on pop and Indigenous culture. Outside the museum is a light installation of 72 lamps of differing heights (not unlike Los Angeles's “ Urban Light ” display) that's an obligatory stop on any La Paz evening stroll.

Where to stay

The dip in tourism during the pandemic allowed La Paz to emerge as a rival to nearby hot spot Cabo San Lucas, with savvy hoteliers restoring early 20th century colonial-style villas with modern interiors that fit  the laid-back vibe of the city. A prime location for exploring downtown La Paz is the newly restored Baja Club Hotel , with 32 guest rooms enclosing a tranquil central patio with a pool and fashionable rooftop bar. Another option on the waterfront, Casa Al Mar, features powder-white polished concrete interiors, brightened by warm furnishings, eye-catching linens, and colorful wall decor.  For a resort experience, Costa Baja Resort and Spa , a luxury hotel with the only Gary Player par 72 golf course in Mexico, located on 220 hectares of coastal land is your best bet. In the summer of 2022, look for the reopening of the historic Hotel La Perla by Hamak Hotels , reimagined in an art deco and contemporary style complete with an infinity pool.

Explore the City of La Paz

If you’re looking for a beautiful city to explore, then you are reading the right article. This picturesque city is known for its charming layout and peaceful ambiance.

Visitors can enjoy  plenty of activities  such as swimming with whale sharks or simply strolling at the  iconic Malecon  and soaking up the atmosphere.

La Paz is also a great place to enjoy delicious Mexican food, so be sure to try some local specialties during your visit!

No matter what time of year you visit La Paz, there’s always something to see and do. Whether you’re interested in activities like sportfishing or scuba diving or want to enjoy some beautiful scenery, La Paz is definitely worth a visit.

Where is La Paz Located?

La Paz is located in the state of Baja California Sur, situated on a long-shaped peninsula that juts out into the Gulf of California, which is gifted with many different landscapes.

The city is surrounded by natural beauty, from the Malecon ocean views to beautiful cactus forests, majestic mountains, and rock formations.

How to Get to La Paz

The best way to get to La Paz is by flying into Manuel Márquez de León International Airport (LAP) . The airport is located about 12 kilometers (km) from the city center.

There are few direct flights to La Paz from major cities in Mexico, but if you are coming from the US, the only direct flight is from Phoenix (PHX).

If you don’t want to pay a lot of money and put up with flight connections, getting a direct flight to Los Cabos and then a 2-hour shuttle to La Paz is much easier— this is my preferred alternative, and to be honest, it’s very comfortable!

Once you’ve arrived in the city, moving around with a rental car will be easier as the public transport isn’t great. If you are not moving too much, then Uber is a cheap alternative— a few months ago, I paid less than $ 2 bucks for a ride!

In my own experience, the best rentals I had were with Hertz La Paz , with reasonable prices and no hustle. Just remember to be open to your circumstances; in the end, you might have different experiences than me.

How’s the Weather at La Paz?

The weather in La Paz is perfect for those who love the sun and warmth.

The average temperature is around 28ºC (82ºF), with minimal variation between seasons— except for the summer peak in July and August, where the temperatures rise to 38ºC (100.4ºF)!

Unlike other places in Mexico where the weather is tropical and humid, La Paz can be dry and even chilly at night; humidity levels are pretty low, so it’s generally comfortable.

However, if you’re not a fan of heat, you may prefer to visit during the cooler months (December to February), when temperatures drop to a more manageable 20ºC to 25ºC (68ºF – 77ºF).

Cactus Sanctuary located near the city of La Paz, BCS, Mexico

During winter, this is the kind of location where you can enjoy a lovely evening with a light jumper on and flip-flops while you sip a glass of wine after a summery and busy day swimming and strolling around.

Monthly Weather

Here is a yearly journey of what to expect from La Paz, Mexico, weather— hence, provided by a local with over 30 years of experience!

From January to February

This is the best time to be here. The weather is fresh in the mornings, with a little breeze, and sometimes windy in the evenings.

During the afternoon you can enjoy a clear sky with the perfect temperature for sunbathing and swimming, it’s simply the best! Unbeatable season I should say.

From March to June

Heat starts to creep in, and if you go outside during the day, you can start feeling the sun hitting harder; it is recommendable to stay in the shade and avoid prolonged sun exposure from 12:00 to 16:00; always use high-quality sunscreen.

It is still fresh during the night, though not as cold as the previous period. You can enjoy outdoor activities during the early hours in the morning or evening alike.

This can be the perfect season for outdoor-night adventures like  stargazing  and  camping,  as the wind is not as rough as winter.

Stargaze setup in Baja California Sur, Mexico

July to August

This is as hot as you can get; the sun hits hard during the afternoon, and you can get sunburn just by standing in the Malecon for 10 minutes (without shade).

Similar to the March and June period, this is when you’d instead prefer to have night adventures. Anything from going out for late dinner on a lovely fresh terrace near the Malecon or just going for a camping session, you can enjoy La Paz as much as you want.

It is not convenient for anybody to go out and perform any outdoor high-intensity activity like cycling, hiking, or running during afternoon hours as you can suffer a heat shock.

Officially the hurricane season, September can be a hot month but with a humid sensation, which makes it a little bit more tolerable.

Honestly, it is unlikely to have dangerous hurricanes, but there is always a risk; you can definitely experience cloudy days and short rain showers here and there, refreshing the temperature and providing some relief from the hot summer.

La Paz, BCS, cloudy day in the Malecon, sailboats resting at the shore

Sometimes you can have small cyclones (not more than once per season, really), most of them hit during the night, and generally, they don’t last much.

November to December

Cooling season, this is a transition to winter bliss. You can still feel a bit hot afternoon, but this sensation starts to fade over the weeks. By the first week of December, you can enjoy beautiful weather again.

Temperatures by month

Tours and activities all year-round.

Take a look at this table where you can picture all the activities you can do in La Paz and its surroundings, and start planning a fantastic trip full of fun!

Best Time to Visit La Paz Mexico

Many visitors agree that the best time to visit is from December to February. Here are the main reasons why:

  • The hot weather is manageable and delightful, especially during the evening.
  • Whale watching season is at its top— you have to book a tour in Los Cabos or Bahía Magdalena for this.
  • Whale Shark season is also at its best; you can jump in a sailboat near the Malecon and swim with these fantastic creatures anytime.

Whale Shark swimming with two three divers, La Paz, BCS, Mexico

  • Enjoying all outdoor adventures without the excessive heat during the afternoon is easy.
  • Even tho there was more international tourism during this period, La Paz is not a big travel destination, so the crowds are not that bad.
  • During winter, most locals travel elsewhere, which gives the impression of less crowded beaches (it’s funny, but for some locals like me, the beach can be too cold in the winter!)
  • And last but not least: no bugs, no flies!— trust me, this sounds silly, but it can be a deal-breaker!

There you go, if you’re looking for a relaxed and enjoyable experience, plan your trip for these months, and you won’t regret it.

Best Months for Flights and Accommodations

You’ll find the  cheapest rates  because of the hurricane season. With a bit of research, you might find this is more like an educated risk rather than a potential disaster.

If you are not bothered about the seasonal tours and are happy to explore the city, this is probably a good way of doing it. You can save a significant amount of money while you enjoy spending time at the beautiful beaches around and also eat tasty dishes at the best restaurants in town.

Balandra panoramic view at the sunset with few sailboats around, La Paz, BCS, Mexico.

  • If a hurricane hits (which is not that frequent), you might have to postpone any tour you booked for a couple of days. Also, whale-watching tours are not occurring.
  • The temperatures are starting to descend, but some people might find the heat not comfortable.

May and June  – These months are also an excellent alternative to finding attractive deals for flights and accommodation, as international tourism is not extremely busy during this part of the year.

The weather is not as hot as it can get yet, and most places can offer good value for money. You can enjoy outdoor activities during the early hours or evenings and relax with a cocktail on hand in a refreshing pool all day.

Not many, perhaps the heat can be a little bit too harsh for some people, but as long as you can enjoy the day in a shaded area and taste a super cold beer, trust me, you’ll going to love the weather, it’s warm and windy, summer can’t get better!

Low Crowded Months

Most people avoid coming to Baja California Sur during September, so if you are “grinchy,” this is your perfect time. Sit down at Harker Board’s rooftop terrace and enjoy a cold drink admiring the Malecon view on a summer day.

This is a sweltering month with average temperatures of 38°C ( 100.4°F), but still good enough to enjoy shaded areas, evening activities, and tasty outdoor dinner nights.

On the good side, this is where you can enjoy a nice camping session without the wind crushing your tent every 10 minutes.

Beautiful residential building in La Paz beach, BCS, Mexico

This is definitely the hottest month of the year, and people should be careful about overexposing themselves to the sun. During the hottest hours (12:00 – 16:00), staying away from the beach is convenient because even with good shade, the sun can still hurt your skin badly.

This is the perfect weather to perform scuba diving, evening camping (and leave during the early hours), stargazing, and enjoy indoor or evening events.

Is La Paz a Safe City in Mexico?

If you’re wondering whether La Paz is a safe city in Mexico, the answer is yes! La Paz is considered one of the safest cities in Mexico, and tourists are unlikely to experience any problems while visiting.

However, there are a few safety precautions that travelers should take note of. Here are some safety tips for traveling to La Paz, Mexico:

  • Avoid walking alone at night (the city has poor lighting in general)
  • Keep your belongings safe and secure
  • Be cautious with strangers
  • If you have the chance to travel with nationals (I mean, Mexicans), it would be even better for you and your group
  • Never book a tour with unknown charters (use trusted online services instead)
  • Avoid at all costs wandering around the back of the city as this is a less safe area
  • Trust your gut instinct. If something feels off, it probably is.

Following these safety tips will help ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable trip to La Paz.

The Worst Time to Visit La Paz

La Paz is a beautiful city, but there are certain times of the year when you can experience some surprises:

The Weather

The summer months are by far the most challenging to visit La Paz. It can get incredibly hot (sometimes humid), and generally, the city doesn’t have the infrastructure to deal with the heat.

La Paz cathedral in the city main square in BCS, Mexico

To master the art of surviving La Paz summer, you must book a comfortable accommodation equipped with AC and fans and hydrate with electrolytes often; otherwise, you might regret it.

Many visitors agree that the best time to visit is from November to February and April (Easter). During this time, the weather is colder, but you’ll have to deal with the crowds.

Even though the crowds are not that bad compared to places like Cabo or Cancun, you might prefer enjoying the beaches with fewer people around.

The Bottom Line

La Paz is a great place to visit if you’re looking for stunning natural beauty, exciting marine life, and delicious food.

Located on the Sea of Cortez, La Paz offers visitors plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, from hiking and biking to swimming and snorkeling with fantastic creatures.

So when is the best time to visit La Paz? While the weather is generally pleasant year-round, the best time to visit is from October to May.

During these months, the temperatures are less warm, and there is less rainfall. However, if you’re looking to avoid the crowds and pay less, you may want to take a chance and visit during summer.

When you visit La Paz, you will have a memorable experience. So pack your bags and head to this Mexican gem today!
