Review: M/S Princess Sarah Nile River Cruise Ship

This review details a Nile river cruise on board the ship M/S Princess Sarah.

Nile river cruise

Planning a Nile river cruise might seem like a daunting task as there are quite a lot of choices you need to make an information can be scarce at times.

The previous chapter in this trip report therefore addressed all the general information you need to know about a Nile river cruise, such as the possible itineraries, differences between ships, costs and how you can book your river cruise itinerary.

If you haven’t followed this trip report from the beginning, you are well-advised to read it so you are up-to-date about the basics behind a Nile cruise regardless of the exact ship you plan to take.

In this chapter I will review my actual river cruise experience as well as the facilities and service on board the Nile cruise ship I selected for my journey, the M/S Princess Sarah.

Reasons why I chose the Princess Sarah

As I wrote in the previous chapter, there can be huge differences between Nile river boats in terms of luxury, size, style, design and budget.

Therefore, choosing the vessel you want to cruise on will be a highly personal choice as other people might make completely different decisions than I did.

Luxor & Aswan Travel Agency , the tour outfit which I used to book my Nile river cruise, had a clear overview on its website of about a couple of dozen ships from which you can choose.

Although it was easy enough for me to narrow all the options down to three ships, making my final choice was a bit more difficult.

In the end, these were the reasons why I ended up deciding on the Princess Sarah:

– Public areas full of old world charm. – Modern-looking cabin. – Sitting corner with sliding glass doors in cabin for perfect open-air Nile views. – Swimming pool.

Lobby and check-in

I embarked on the M/S Princess Sarah while it was anchored along the quay in Aswan.

The first thing you will notice on board the Princess Sarah is the striking lobby of the ship with its magnificent staircase and glass ceiling.

Check-in was a smooth process and I got assigned a cabin on the port side of the ship on its first floor.

Princess Sarah cabin

My cabin on the M/S Princess Sarah certainly matched with the images I saw of it before so it didn’t disappoint.

I had a twin cabin for private use and the room certainly looked neat and stylish and was perfectly clean.

The bed itself was comfortable and all three nights on board I managed to get some good quality sleep.

At the far end of the cabin next to the sliding glass doors is a small sofa with table as well as a small cabinet with a flat-screen TV on top.

Inside this cabinet you can find a little fridge – which was perfect to store some of the booze I had brought along for the cruise.

Opposite the two beds is a small desk with mirror, while in the hallway you can find a large closet with plenty of storage space.

The cabin also featured individually controlled air-conditioning and a safe box inside the room where you can store your valuables.

The only slight negative of the cabin was the lack of a power socket next to the bedside table.

My cabin had its own en-suite bathroom and although it was a bit on the narrow side, it was fully equipped with a shower, bathtub, toilet, sink, hairdryer and basic toiletries.

Both cold and warm water were readily available from the taps inside the bathroom.

bathroom cabin

What I liked best about my cabin on board the M/S Princess Sarah were the big sliding glass doors.

This was a major reason why I opted for this ship in the first place and I was happy to see that the sitting corner in my cabin was indeed a perfect place to wind down during the sailing.

Although the views from the top deck of the ship are arguably much better as you are higher up and can admire the scenery on both banks of the River Nile, the seating corner in my cabin wasn’t bad either.

Fortunately, the sofa and table could easily be moved so I was able to place it right in front of the open doors for some fresh air and unobstructed views.

It allowed for a private little area to sip some drinks in all quietness while still being able to photograph the scenery and enjoy the views.

Lounge and bar

On the first floor of the M/S Princess Sarah you can find the lovely lounge bar of the ship, which just like the lobby oozes the old world charm of Nile river boat from the early 1900s.

The bar menu features all kinds of hot and cold drinks, including beer, wine, cocktails and other alcoholic drinks.

Another nice place to hang out on the M/S Princess Sarah is its open-air top deck, which features a small swimming pool, sun loungers, a bar and also plenty of covered seating for those who want to sit in the shade.

Needless to say, the top deck is a popular place among cruise passengers at scenic points of the journey along the River Nile.

Besides the departure from Aswan with its stunning backdrop of high sand dunes and the final arrival at Luxor, also the passage through the Esna Locks is popular among passengers so make sure you arrive on deck in time.

Swimming pool

The M/S Princess Sarah also features a small outdoor pool, another reason why I chose for this particular river cruise ship.

However, the swimming pool looked like it has seen better days and could certainly do with some renovation.

More importantly, the water inside the pool was ice cold, which made it impossible to take a dip.

Unsurprisingly, I never saw a single person inside the pool during my cruise.

Although I can imagine the pool is more attractive in late spring, summer or early autumn when the temperature soars to extreme levels, you should note that in winter (high tourist season for Egypt!) it will most likely not be that comfortable.

What I gathered, most Nile cruise ships have unheated pools, so this is likely an issue for many other river boats as well.

If a swimming pool is important to you, I would therefore recommend that you check in advance whether your preferred ship has a heated pool.

Although the pool was a minor disappointment at first, in reality it was something which didn’t matter much at all to me in the grand scheme of things as I could easily do without.

Other facilities

Other noteworthy facilities on the board of the M/S Princess Sarah are a small gift shop and children’s play area.

On the lower floor of the ship in the anteroom before the main dining hall you can also find a pool table and another small bar.

children's play area

Although there was a wireless internet network on the M/S Princess Sarah, the WiFi signal only covered the reception area of the ship and even there it seemed impossible to get it working.

I would highly suggest you to buy an Egyptian SIM card before you embark on your cruise.

A SIM card and a couple of gigabyte of mobile data doesn’t cost much in Egypt and 4G coverage along most of the Nile is good.

Each morning, breakfast is served in the main dining hall on the lower deck of the M/S Princess Sarah.

Typically, all meals on board your Nile river boat will be buffet style and included in your cruise package, although some high-end cruise ships may offer à la carte dining.

Breakfast on the M/S Princess Sarah was buffet style and had tea and coffee included, although other drinks like orange juice were an optional extra which you had to order with one of the waiters.

I found the quality and choice at the breakfast buffet to be very good and you can expect both European and Egyptian fare.

Besides different pastries, cheese, cold cuts, fresh fruit, jams and cereals there were also warm options such as sausages, fuul (mashed fava beans cooked with oil) as well as made-to-order eggs.

In case you have an early excursion planned at one of the stops along the route (such as Abu Simbel ) the personnel on board the M/S Princess Sarah is happy to provide you with a packed breakfast to take with you if you let them know the night before.

Lunch and dinner

I was impressed with the quality and quantity of the food at the lunch and dinner buffet on board the M/S Princess Sarah.

Each seating, there would be completely new dishes available at the buffet, so the food was certainly varied enough throughout the cruise.

When it comes to cooked food, you could always expect a couple of different meats, one fish dish, two vegetarian dishes, rice or potatoes and pasta.

Options for children like chicken nuggets and chips were available too.

Besides this, there was a large salad bar, plenty of fruit and some quality breads as well.

Also the desserts changed frequently and often featured different kinds of sweets and pies, cake, ice cream and baklava.

Although all the food was included in my cruise package, drinks were not so if you want anything to drink with your meal (whether it’s a simple bottle of water or an alcoholic drink) you had to order this from one of the waiters.

food nile cruise

The service by the staff on the M/S Princess Sarah was perfectly fine, with especially the cooks and waiters in the restaurant being a friendly an jolly bunch.

Overall, I had the impression that the Nile river cruise ship was professionally run.

Everything you order during the cruise, whether it’s a drink during lunch or a nightcap at the lounge bar, is added to your account.

You simply give your room number to the waiter or barkeep when you order your drink and pay for everything at the reception desk when you check out from the cruise ship.

Note that on Egyptian river cruises it is customary to tip the personnel, although this usually happens at the end of your cruise and not individually at each and every order.

On the last night of the cruise, you will receive an envelope in which you will put your tip for the staff.

This envelope is then collected upon check-out, after which the tips from all the passengers will be added up and divided among each and every staff member of the cruise ship, from the waiters to the cleaners and cooks.

However, do note that these tips only go towards the staff who are directly employed on the river boat and that you will need to tip your guide and drivers for shore excursions separately.

The M/S Princess Sarah turned out to be a great ship to cruise along the River Nile and generally left me with good impressions.

To start with the positive aspects, I found the cabin to be comfortable and clean.

I certainly loved the little seating corner and the large sliding glass doors as it allowed me to absorb the scenery from the comfort of my own cabin.

The public areas on the M/S Princess Sarah are certainly beautiful, with especially the lobby and the lounge bar having lots of style and charm.

The quality and quantity of the food buffets were another strong point of the M/S Princess Sarah and staff was generally friendly and helpful.

However, there were a few negative points as well, as the top-deck pool was way too cold to swim or take a dip and the WiFi internet on board the ship didn’t work.

In practice, these points however turned out to be minor inconveniences.

Overall, I had a great experience on board the M/S Princess Sarah and can certainly recommend this ship if you are planning a Nile cruise between Aswan and Luxor.

We have just returned from a 7 day Nile cruise with 2 nights and excursions in Cairo city. We found the trip on Travel Zoo who we have used for years and will continue to count on for travel bargains. The trip was offered through Discounters Travel our of Toronto , Canada and proved to be well worth the price. Starting with our pre-trip experience with the travel company, I found all of the people at Traveler Discounters to be excellent communicators and very helpful. I dealt primarily with Junior and could count on hearing from him with in minutes of emailing him. At Cairo airport we were met by a representative of Blue Skies travel. Samir was at the departure gate holding a sign and had already gotten our Egypt visas so the departure went very smoothly. He did a great job introducing us to Cairo city and later that evening helped us go on our first add on excursions. We went to the Great Pyramids 'Sound and Light' show which I would not recommend. The cost was about $45 pp U.S. and in my opinion was very much over dramatized bordering on hokey. Save your money for other worthwhile extras. The hotel Le Meridien at Giza Plateau was a mid range hotel and was clean and modern but nothing special. Food was buffet style and was adequate. We did not travel to Egypt for the cuisine and had read reviews which let us know what to expect. Staff at the hotel was good, but nothing outstanding or remarkable. They were reluctant to accept credit cards for small amounts and on that note I would recommend any future travelers to take lots of singles and small American bills. Also, and this was not pointed out to me in advance, you should make a point of getting a decent supply of small Egyptian pounds for vendors and bathroom attendants! The bank on premises in the hotel lobby was able to make conversions at a decent rate but did not have small denominations and making change is difficult. We toured Old Cairo on our first day with a Blue Sky rep named Kareem. His knowledge and passion were evident and impressive. He not only educated us about the antiquities of Egypt but helped us understand some of the present day political situation. For me it was a remarkable experience to learn more about the Muslim religion and I appreciate Kareem's patience in answer what must have sounded to him like very immature questions. This was my first real experience among so many Muslim people and I found them to be warm, friendly and open. Meeting and interacting with so many wonderful Egyptian people was the highlight of the trip. We flew to Luxor after visiting the Cairo Museum and a perfume. Like so many other discount travel groups the guides are advised to take the tourists to various factories and stores. I hated this in Turkey, I hate it in China, I hated it in Peru and it was no different in Cairo or Luxor at the alabaster store but I do understand the reasoning behind it and have learned to say no to what I feel are high pressure sales techniques. If you can say no to your guide do so before agreeing to 'just listen and share a cup of tea' sales pitches. Suggestion to Blue Skies would be to not have such a long wait at the airport. With over a 3 hour wait after being dropped by our van driver and then a delayed flight, my husband and I and our 3 fellow passengers were viewing both Blue Skies and Travel Discounters in a much less positive light. There was nothing to do at the airport, it was cold and we were all very unhappy at this point in our trip. When we arrived at Luxor airport we were greeted by Ashraf our Blue Skies on board rep who stayed with us and helped us out for the next 7 days. All of us were upgraded in our accommodations and moved to 4th floor rooms. The lounge remained open and we were able to enjoy a glass of wine before heading to our rooms where sandwiches and a basket of fruit awaited each of us. A nice touch and a bit of a make up call for the too long wait for our flight. All of us had pre-purchased a beverage package and I would recommend that to all travelers. The ship itself although older and somewhat worn was clean and the staff was friendly. I always introduce myself to any staff I encounter and was impressed by how many of them remembered my name. Thank you to Ramadan who never failed to greet me by name and ask about my day. Like almost every Egyptian person I met he was a wonderful ambassador to his country and an asset to his company. Our first excursion was early the next morning and although I am not an early morning person I was so grateful to be among the first through almost every ticket gate. Picture taking and up close and personal looks at the antiquities was such a pleasure as some of the sight did get crowded with tourists later in the day. Most excursions were included in the package but there were a few add on. The Light and Sound show in Cairo I cannot recommend. The Nubian village which we reached by motor boat was a good take at an additional $35 pp but might have been a bit over priced. We knew from our Cairo guide that we would need Egyptian pounds (100 pounds each) to get into the Tutankamun tomb but had not been pre-advised about visiting the tomb of Sety I which had just opened a month before our visit. It was a remarkable take but at $55 pp American was a little pricey. The ticketing people could not take an form of a credit card so this left the 7 of us who were traveling together this day a bit short of cash. My advise to Discount Travelers would be to tell their clients about all add ons, give pricing and suggest changing sufficient money to cover the cost of the optional excursions. Our biggest disappointment was the feeling that we were badly over charged for the optional Hot Air Balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings. Binod at Discount Travelers was emailed asking for an adjustment but as of this writing there as been no resolution to this situation. We booked before leaving the U.S. and learned that we were charged more than double what those on board paid and almost 3 times more than travelers from another cruise ship paid. My advise is to tell travelers to book on board as pricing can change but that the excursions unlike those on large cruise ships really never sell out. The pricing was and is a disappointment but the actual experience was wonderful and our pilot on the balloon was very friendly and capable. Having it to do again, I would still do each of the optional excursions but would like to be in a position to negotiate the price. It did not go unnoted that Saber, our most wonderful guide included a faluca ride on the Nile and an early evening tea at Kom Ombo temple at no additonal cost to us. Both of these side trips were great experiences. On board the Sunrise Semiramsis III, my husband and I met a young graphic artist who introduced us to his wife and traveling companions. Akmed, Ashmed, Manar, Amany and the other young people we met are the main reason we travel. I like to think of my self as an ambassador and representative of the U.S.A and hope I do a good job in that capacity. This group of 30 something year olds were the best ambassadors any country or religion could ever hope for. Our evenings were spent sharing and learning about each others likenesses and differences. In the words of our former poet laureate, Maya Angelou, we are indeed more alike than different! (Something our new U.S. president needs to learn). Thank you to all my new Egyptian friends and to the remarkable guides and representatives who made our trip so memorable. Saber and Ashraf were the BEST! Be aware there are vendors wherever you go. These people are not beggars. They are offering goods and services in exchange for money but can be pesty and persistant. Be prepared to negotiate or just say no thank you and hustle by. If at the various sights someone should seem to be offering tourist advise know in advance that the information is not free nor are photo ops. Be prepared to say no or pay a small fee. Hence the reason for many, many small denomination bills both American and Egptian. Just a short note on things to bring other than a supply of small note bills...there were no wash clothes available in the rooms so pack a few. The regular hotel amenities were not included. All in one shampoos and body wash was available in the shower but I would recommend bringing a supply of your own and a small bar of soap. For outside travel, bring hand sanitizers and mini packs of tissue. While sitting outside I was bitten by what appeared to be common house flies, so bring bug spray and sun screen. A suggestion to the ship....have a designated smokers area. It was hard to find a smoke free area during our free time on the sun deck. All in all this was an amazing bargain and I would recommend Discount Travelers and Blue Skys. We loved the small group experience and would not have missed it. Saber and Ashraf deserve the highest praise. They are wonderful representatives to their country, their culture and their company

I really enjoyed my time on the Nile cruise, organised by Mohammed Marghany of Guided tours in Cairo. The food was great, rooms clean, atmosphere friendly and Ahmed our tour guide - was consistently pleasant and helpful. We got a whistle stop tour of the valley of the kings and various other historical points of interest. There were also optional add ons such as hot air balloon trips if you so wished. I would highly recommend this tour. We added an extra day onto the end - in Aswan - and stayed in a traditional Nubian house. The whole experience really was amazing.

Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan was amazing tour, nice weather, well organized and super excellent guide. Really I wish to be there again, me and my family enjoyed every minute . highly recommended..thanks a lot mr Mohamad Merghany. Thanks a lot Nile valley cruise ...

MS Princess SARAH II NIle Cuise boat

As part of small group tour from UK ,"cruised" from Aswan to Luxor on the Nile aboard Princess Sara II.This seems only place to review this boat. Very tedious experience.Very "proscribed". Boats all move in convoy ,partly due to need to navigate a lock system but also because there are so many of them??? The first night boat was still tied up to the quayside and did not leave until the afternoon but one still had to spend that night on the boat.Other boats moor in tandem so your window may be a few inches from another cabin window. Although our on shore visits were conducted in our small group of 12 ,the boat itself had about 70/80 guests. Buffet food mainly bland continental , very little was Egyptian .The desserts were over fanciful. They did at least have cheese, dates and olives .The soup one night was mushroon, another night ,tomato! i had been expecting basarah or mulukhiyah. The ful medames, when available, lacked the spices, likewise babaganoush lacked garlic! The stop at Kom Ombo occured after dusk and busy as other boats were also disgorging.. Not possible to navigate without torch(I had one) as not all areas lit by lights. Cabin chilly due to lack of sun in window and aircon from hallway felt through gap under the door. Floating hotel rooms average, clean enough, beds ok. Take a travel kettle. Not provided in rooms and one spends a very long time stuck on this tub with nothing to do.They must make their profits from drinks?? Take coffee bags as they only provide nescafe sachets at breakfast or black tea.I always take a stock of herbal teas .Take a proper filter water bottle(one that removes viruses etc) as nothing is free,to filter the tap water. They seem to serve alchohol, probably expensive. Small swinning pool, suitable 6-8 strokes per length but used up an hour or so daily .reading material required! Some Butlins 1960s style entertainment available in the evening. Vendors inhabit level 3. My first and last ever cuise experience. Most group tours seem to include these so difficult to avoid! Prefereble would be follow the river on a camel and camp out every night and eat food cooked over a fire.?

princess sarah nile cruise reviews

amawaterways Amadahlia Very boring, food totally mediocre, wine was vinegar same wine day after day. My room was not the one pictured. the help was attentive to the point of being annoying. . no I do not want to go to the manager's room at 10:00 at night. If you are a single woman beware.

A trip of a lifetime thanks to the wonderful Staff at Egypt Escapes and their land agents Sun International. The boat chosen was MS Blue Shadow I which is part of the Princess Cruise Line. Most of the boats on the nile are old and in dire need of an overhaul but Blue Shadow I was lovely with a nice picture window in every room. The cleanliness was impeccable and special thanks to our room attendant who made everyday special by his artistic display of towels, I have never seen such creativity. The food was OK, very Egyptian and can get a bit boring after a while, they really need to put a tea maker or kettle in the room. Only let down was the evening entertainment as very little to do once you have seen the belly dancing show. Can fully recommend the 7 night cruise as 2/3 nights just isn't long enough.

You can’t visit Egypt and not see the Nile. So much life, business and happiness and foundation of the country is based on the banks of the Nile. I highly recommend getting a boat trip

We just returned from the Odyssey Unlimited tour "Egypt and the Eternal Nile". Our guide, Doaa, was amazing. Her knowledge of Egypt was incredible and she was able to not only show us the many temples, pyramids, sphynx's, etc. but told us many of the stories of the kings and queens and gods and goddesses which helped make the history and hieroglyphics so much more meaningful and memorable, especially since I am not a history buff! The hotel and cruise accommodations were great! Doaa really made our dream trip perfect!

Incredible experience. Service from everyone onsite was unparalleled. Meals were superb; chef special, menu items and buffet at every meal. Prepared beautifully. Complimentary wine, beer at every lunch and dinner that staff was very willing to keep pouring. MS Antares was gorgeous with classic beauty. Small enough that we met everyone. The itinerary was perfect. Had worried about not enough time at each site but it was just right every time. When the new museum opens in Cairo may need increased time there. Egypt was very safe. Tourists are highly prized there. Had rides on camels, horse and buggy, sail and motor boats as well as hot air balloons if we wanted. Most impressive was out program director, Ahmed. He had an amazing bank of knowledge of all things Egyptian which he enthusiastically shared. He ensured we all had the experience we wanted while "watching over" the group. Cannot say enough about his impact on our trip. Wasn't very happy with Viking initially when booking. Not quite enough thourough communication for first time travelers abroad. COVID bulls__t, didn't help. Also could not get "Silver Seas" premium alcohol package for myself as my husband does not drink and is only available if both parties in a room purchase. However the hotel manager on Antares addressed this with me immediately and it turned out great. Also not happy we were booked at hotel with casino in Cairo which was not negotiable per customer service. Once we reached Cairo and met Ahmed and all the other incredible people in Egypt, everything turned out to far exceed my expectations.
