Investigators seek leads in 2023 murder in rankin county.

The Rankin County Sheriff's Department is seeking help from the public to solve a cold case.

The investigation began on Oct. 30, with an assault on Kenneth Lee Shoemaker near Pelahatchie. Investigators were able to determine that Shoemaker was in the area of Highway 43, north of the city of Pelahatchie.

Shoemaker died Dec. 7 at a hospital as a result of the injuries he suffered during the assault.

Anyone with information that leads to an arrest, could be eligible for a reward of up to $2,500. Anonymous tips can be placed by calling Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS or by going to P3tips/115 .

On Monday, millions of people across the United States will get to see a rare total solar eclipse , the first in the U.S. since 2017 and the last until 2044.

And millions of others who aren't in the path of totality will see a partial solar eclipse .

Depending on where you are will determine how much of the sun will be covered by the moon. Those along the path of totality — which stretches from northern Mexico into Texas, the Midwest and East Coast and, finally, southeast Canada before moving out to sea, according to  NASA — will see a total solar eclipse, in which the moon appears the same size as the sun and blocks the entire disk, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes.

In Jacksonville and across Northeast Florida, about 62% of the sun will be obscured.

What time does the eclipse start in Jacksonville?

In Jacksonville, the eclipse will begin at 1:47 p.m. and continue to 4:19 p.m. At its peak at 3:05 p.m., about 64% of the sun will be obscured by the moon. ( Search eclipse times by ZIP code .)

When will the next solar eclipse happen?

A solar eclipse is a rare phenomenon: it won't happen again in the U.S. again for another 20 years, on Aug. 23, 2044. Even then, its path of totality will stretch across Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota — hundreds of miles northwest from Monday’s eclipse path.

Monday’s solar eclipse will be a spectacular event for people in the path of totality, but even those subjected to a partial view can still enjoy the moon blocking the sun.

All states in the contiguous U.S. will experience some level of the eclipse. However, according to NASA , the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, along with some areas of Kentucky, Michigan and Tennessee, will be in the path of totality.

The moon will fully cover the sun for up to 4½ minutes, according to The Wall Street Journal . Viewers can get a rare glimpse of the sun’s corona -- the outermost part of the star’s atmosphere.

NASA has a tool that shows how the eclipse will look in your area. Just enter your zip code.

Univision has a more interactive tool that simulates the view as the moon moves across the sun.

Eclipse2024.org also has an interactive tool that illustrates what the eclipse will look from any venue in the United States.

Monday will be the last time until 2044 that a total eclipse can be viewed in the contiguous United States.

Freshman Will Smith had two goals, Cutter Gauthier scored his nation-leading 38th of the season and No. 1 overall seed Boston College beat Michigan 4-0 on Thursday night in the Eagles' first Frozen Four appearance since 2016.

Boston College (34-5-1) will look to avenge an October loss to Denver when the two teams square off on Saturday for the national championship. The Eagles, in their 26th Frozen Four, are seeking their sixth title in program history — and first since 2012.

Michigan (23-15-2) was playing in the Frozen Four for a third consecutive season, and 28th overall.

Smith opened the scoring 80 seconds into the game by capitalizing on a 2-on-1.

Smith doubled the lead in the second when he curled around the net and sent a shot off two skate blades into the goal. Smith leads the nation with 71 points this season.

Gauthier, the nation's scoring leader, scored 49 seconds later on a breakaway when he sent a shot under the pads of Jake Barczewski.

Gauthier is tied with Ryan Potulny (Minnesota, 2006) for the most Division I goals in a season since 2000. Mike Donnelly holds the overall record with 59, set in 1986.

Freshman Jacob Fowler secured his third shutout of the season by making 32 saves.

Tristan Broz scored his second overtime goal of the NCAA Tournament and No. 3 seed Denver beat No. 2 Boston University 2-1 on Thursday night to advance to the national championship game for the first time since winning the title in 2022.

Denver (31-9-3), playing in its 19th Frozen Four, seeks its 10th national title in program history on Saturday — which would break a tie with Michigan for the most in college hockey history.

Denver has just two losses since the start of February, going 14-2-1 in the last 17 games.

BU senior Luke Tuch opened the scoring at 7:45 of the first period with his 10th goal of the season. He stole the puck and went in alone for a shothanded goal. It was BU’s fourth shorthanded goal of the season — and first scored by somebody other than Nick Zabaneh.

Boston University (28-10-2) entered 19-1-0 this season when leading after the first period.

Denver’s Tristan Lemyre tied it at 1-all with his second goal of the season. He took advantage of a wide-open slot by beating BU goalie Mathieu Caron.

Broz scored from the top of the right circle at 11:09 of overtime by leading a 3-on-2 and sending a wrist shot through the pads of Caron. It was the 40th point of the season for Broz.

Matt Davis, who made his 25th straight start in net, saved 33 shots for Denver.

The Pioneers have won five straight games against the Terriers, setting a record for the longest winning streak in the series. Denver won the first four games from 1960-67, while Boston had a four-game winning streak from 1990-99.

It was the second Frozen Four game in a row to reach overtime after Quinnipiac won last season’s national championship game in extra time.

Big Ten basketball fans already knew 2-time Player of the Year Zach Edey wouldn’t return to Purdue next season.

But it appears two key members of the Boilers national runner-up roster won’t be back in West Lafayette, either.

Seniors Ethan Morton and Mason Gillis both entered the transfer portal on Wednesday, according to reports from On3.

Morton, a 4-star shooting guard from the 2020 class, served as a role player for the Boilers, mostly contributing on defense.

He started 29 of 37 games and averaged 25 minutes per game last season, but saw his role decrease to just 10 minutes per game this year. He averaged under a point per game.

Gillis, a 6-6 forward, was a key player off the bench for Matt Painter this season, averaging 6.5 points and 3.9 rebounds while shooting nearly 47% from beyond the arc.

Gillis played high school basketball at New Castle High School in Indiana. He was a three-star prospect.

Purdue is coming off perhaps its best season in school history. The Boilers went 34-5, winning the Big Ten regular season title for a second-straight season before losing to UConn in the National Championship on Monday.

When and where the solar eclipse will be crossing the U.S.

A total solar eclipse will grace the skies over North America on Monday, one of the most hotly anticipated sky-watching events in recent years.

Weather permitting , millions of people in Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada will have the chance to see the moon slip between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light .

The total solar eclipse will be visible along a “path of totality” that measures more than 100 miles wide and extends across the continent. Along that path, the moon will fully obscure the sun, causing afternoon skies to darken for a few minutes.

In all other parts of the continental U.S., a partial solar eclipse will be visible, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun. Exactly how big a bite depends on the location.

The first spot in North America that will experience totality on Monday is on Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PT, according to NASA .

After moving northeast across Mexico, the eclipse’s path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Slivers of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

In Canada, the eclipse will be visible in parts of southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

The timing of the eclipse and the duration of totality varies by location. Most places will experience around 2 minutes of darkness, but the longest periods of totality are typically in the center of the eclipse’s path.

This year, the longest stretch of totality will last 4 minutes and 28 seconds in an area northwest of Torreón, Mexico.

• Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m. CT.
• Idabel, Oklahoma: Partial eclipse begins at 12:28 p.m. CT and totality at 1:45 p.m. CT.
• Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m. CT.
• Poplar Bluff, Missouri: Partial eclipse begins at 12:39 p.m. CT and totality at 1:56 p.m. CT.
• Paducah, Kentucky: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 2:00 p.m. CT.
• Carbondale, Illinois: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 1:59 p.m. CT.
• Evansville, Indiana: Partial eclipse begins at 12:45 p.m. CT and totality at 2:02 p.m. CT.
• Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
• Erie, Pennsylvania: Partial eclipse begins at 2:02 p.m. ET and totality at 3:16 p.m. ET.
• Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
• Burlington, Vermont: Partial eclipse begins at 2:14 p.m. ET and totality at 3:26 p.m. ET.
• Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.
• Caribou, Maine: Partial eclipse begins at 2:22 p.m. ET and totality at 3:32 p.m. ET.

If you plan to watch the celestial event, remember that it’s never safe to look directly at the sun, including through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses. Special eclipse glasses are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent permanent eye damage.
