17 Top-Rated Attractions & Places to Visit in Corsica

Written by Lisa Alexander Updated May 3, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

With its stunning seaside scenery, expanses of pristine forests, and soaring snowcapped mountains, Corsica lives up to the label, "Island of Beauty." Along the coast are attractive port towns, and the hillsides are dotted with picturesque villages.

Palombaggia Beach, Corsica, France

Corsica offers no shortage of things to do. This idyllic island is a paradise for beach lovers , hikers, and outdoor sports enthusiasts. The island boasts some of Europe's most inspiring rugged landscapes and a 1,000-kilometer shoreline with translucent waters, perfect for snorkeling or scuba diving.

Although Corsica has been part of France since 1769, the island has its own culture. Donkeys still roam the countryside; the music is unique; and the cuisine features distinctive specialties, such as strong spicy cheeses, chestnut polenta, and chestnut cookies.

Discover the best places to visit on this enchanting island with our list of the top tourist attractions in Corsica.

Ajaccio

Corsica's most famous native son, Napoléon Bonaparte, was born in this bustling capital city, pleasantly situated on the Gulf of Ajaccio. Sensational views of the sea can be admired from various spots throughout the town.

At the center of Ajaccio is the Place de Gaulle , a grand square with an equestrian statue of Napoléon I (created in 1865 by Viollet le-Duc).

Next, visit the Musée National de la Maison Bonaparte (Rue Saint-Charles) to see the house where Napoléon I was born. The Bonaparte family lived here in the late 17th century and the 18th century. In the 19th century, Napoléon III inherited the house and refurbished the decor. Today, the Maison Bonaparte is classified as a Monument Historique and presents portraits, memorabilia, and family documents.

Continue your discovery of the Napoleonic era at the Palais Fesch (Musée des Beaux-Arts). The Collection Napoléonienne galleries display imperial portraits of Napoléon I and Napoléon III (both were titled "Emperor of the French") as well as medallions and coins that depict Napoléon I and Napoléon III.

The old town of Ajaccio is also worth exploring. Spend some time wandering around to discover the historic charm within its maze of winding, narrow streets.

Not to be missed in the old town is the 16th-century Cathédrale d'Ajaccio (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de l'Assomption), where Napoléon Bonaparte was baptized in 1771. The cathedral's most noteworthy work of art is the La Vierge au Sacré Côur painting by Eugène Delacroix.

Bonifacio

Bonifacio is a well-preserved fortified town perched on a steep limestone cliff with stunning sea views. Brimming with old-world ambience, the town is a jumble of medieval lanes and narrow alleyways.

At its heart is the 12th- to 13th-century Eglise Sainte-Marie-Majeure , a Romanesque church with early Gothic elements. Also worth visiting is the 13th-century Eglise Saint-Dominique, which has an austere facade and a simple interior.

Bonifacio is found within Corsica's largest nature reserve, the Réserve Naturelle des Bouches de Bonifacio, which encompasses limestone cliffs, seaside grottos, and the Lavezzi Islands.

Near the town are numerous beautiful beaches. Another destination within easy reach of Bonifacio is the port of Santa Teresa di Gallura in Sardini, just a one-hour ferry ride away.

Calvi

This sun-drenched waterfront town has an attractive marina and beautiful beaches along the Bay of Calvi. Soak up the marvelous scenery of the deep blue Mediterranean Sea, with jagged mountains framing the harbor.

Besides sunbathing, swimming, and spending time at outdoor cafés, a top attraction is the Citadel of Calvi . Enter the ancient walled Citadel and you'll find a cluster of medieval cobblestone streets and staircases that lead to discoveries of pleasant squares, historic churches, and fabulous views.

Within the Citadel, the 13th-century Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste exemplifies Corsican Baroque architecture. The interior features noteworthy works of art, including a 15th-century altarpiece depicting the Annunciation and a 16th-century Virgin of the Rosary statue from Spain.

Calvi is also renowned for its summertime jazz festival, which draws top musical talent. The Jazz in Calvi festival takes place annually at the end of June; performances are held at the Citadel and other venues.

Bastia

If you want to experience the real Corsica, this lively seaside city is the place to go. Bastia has a picturesque harbor and a quaint Old Town (Terra Vecchia) bursting with narrow lanes and tightly packed houses.

Within the Terra Vecchia are several noteworthy churches: the 17th-century Eglise Saint-Jean-Baptiste, the largest church in Corsica; the Baroque Chapelle de l'Immaculée Conception; and the Chapelle Saint-Roch, which overlooks the mesmerizing Mediterranean waters.

On a rocky spur to the south of the harbor is the ancient citadel, dating back to 1378.

Cap Corse

At the northernmost tip of Corsica, the Cap Corse peninsula is one of the prettiest areas of the island. The peninsula is covered by a range of foothills and fertile valleys where vines, fruit, and olives grow.

Dotting the landscape are medieval perched villages such as Pino on a wooded hilltop; Nonza clinging to a cliffside; and Rogliano, which is a collection of hamlets and old fishing ports. Rogliano encompasses Erbalunga near Bastia; Macinaggio, with a yacht marina; and Centuri , a tiny fishing village with a working harbor.

If you prefer sunbathing to sightseeing, then head to the Plage de Farinole . This picturesque beach has a fine sand shoreline and crystal-clear turquoise waters. The beach is not great for swimming because of the undercurrent, but the waves are appreciated by surfers. Another highlight of the Plage de Farinole is the restaurant on the beach.

Sant'Antonino

Perched like an eagle's nest on a granite hilltop at almost 500 meters, the ancient walled town of Sant'Antonino offers superb views of the surrounding countryside and the sea.

In the lush Balagne region , Sant'Antonino is one of the oldest villages in Corsica, with a Moorish heritage dating back to the 9th century. Thanks to its old-world charm, Sant'Antonino has earned a place on the list of Plus Beaux Villages de France .

Get ready to do some walking. The village is designed for pedestrians, with its medieval tangle of winding cobblestone streets, alleyways, and covered passageways.

About seven kilometers from Sant'Antonino, the Couvent Saint-Dominique des Frères de Saint-Jean à Corbara perches on a hilltop between snow-peaked mountains and the sea. It's worth the detour to see the splendid 15th-century architecture and admire astounding coastal views.

You may visit the Couvent Saint-Dominique des Frères de Saint-Jean à Corbara by taking a guided tour (in French) or by participating in a spiritual retreat . Guided tours are offered year-round every day (except Mondays) at 3pm.

Sartène

Sartène prides itself on being the "most Corsican" city. This characteristic medieval hilltop town is listed as a Ville d'Art et d'Histoire because of its exceptional heritage.

Must-see tourist attractions include the Eglise Santa-Maria-Assunta , with a simple facade typical of Corsican churches; the former Palais des Gouverneurs Génois , now the Town Hall; and L'Echauguette (tower), which affords sweeping views of the Vallée de Rizzanese.

The Musée de Préhistoire et d'Archéologie (Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology) brings to life the island's ancient history. Exhibits present statues from prehistoric megaliths; Bronze Age and Iron Age weapons, tools, and ceramics; Ancient Roman archaeological finds; and artworks and everyday objects of the Middle Ages.

Near the Palais des Gouverneurs Génois, you'll find an enchanting pedestrian area. Take a stroll to discover the secret corners: arcades, vaulted passageways, and picturesque staircases. The Place du Maghju is a hub of artisan boutiques.

Every year in the spring, the town celebrates the Carnaval de Sartène . This fun-loving carnival festival features parades, musical entertainment, and masked balls.

Sartène also hosts an annual religious procession on Good Friday called the " Catenacciu ," which reenacts the events of the Passion of Christ. One of the "Penitents" carries a heavy cross and a chain during a somber procession, beginning at the Eglise Sainte-Marie and concluding at the altar of Sainte-Marie church. This event attracts pilgrims from near and far.

About 15 kilometers away from Sartène is the Domaine Rosa de Caldane , a pampering thermal bath facility with a mid-range hotel and a brasserie restaurant that serves seasonal cuisine.

Beaches near Porto Vecchio

Some of Corsica's dreamiest sandy beaches are around Porto Vecchio, which has become a busy summertime resort. These beaches are prized for their expansive sandy shorelines, gentle waves, and unspoiled scenery.

The most famous beach is the Plage de Palombaggia, renowned for its wide sandy shore and calm turquoise waters. Another excellent sandy beach is the Plage de Santa Giulia . Both of these beaches are in sheltered bays, which provide a protected environment ideal for swimming.

Slightly farther away, the less-crowded Plage de Rondinara is halfway between Porto Vecchio and Bonifacio. This gorgeous sandy beach nestles along Rondinara Bay. The crystal-clear aquamarine waters at Rondinara Beach have an almost tropical quality.

The citadel of Porto Vecchio is also worth visiting. In the 16th century, the Genoese built this impregnable citadel with sturdy fortifications that remain intact. Enclosed within the citadel is a little world of atmospheric narrow alleyways, covered passageways, and quiet squares. Many restaurants and shops are found around the Place de la République.

Piana

Piana dazzles you with its old-world character and stunning views of the Golfe de Porto. Thanks to its historic charm and natural beauty, Piana is listed as one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France .

Giving the village its special appearance, red-tile-roofed houses spiral around the slopes of a wooded hillside. An exquisite parish church stands at the heart of Piana. The Italian Baroque-style Eglise Sainte-Marie features lovely frescoes and arcades decorated with sculpted medallions.

A pedestrian jaunt is the way to discover this dreamy perched village. You will delight in strolling the quaint narrow streets, while stumbling upon pleasant tree-shaded squares and terraces with gorgeous sea views.

At the entrance to the village, Les Roches Rouges offers upscale accommodations and gourmet meals. In a magical setting, the hotel's guest rooms and outdoor patio look out onto the mesmerizing azure waters of the Gulf of Porto. The hotel's gastronomic restaurant serves classic French cuisine in an elegant dining room that is protected as a Monument Historique .

More awe-inspiring panoramas are found in the hamlet of Vistale , which has an ancient chapel, the Chapelle Saint-Lucie (open in July and August) adorned with Byzantine-style frescoes created by 20th-century Russian artists.

Between the village of Piana and the seaside resort of Porto is a scenic (and challenging) coastal drive on curvy roads that wind through the UNESCO-listed Calanques de Piana mountains. The Calanques de Piana is an inlet surrounded by rose-colored granite cliffs that plunge into the deep-blue Mediterranean Sea. The area's hiking trails feature amazing vistas.

Castagniccia Region

About a one-hour drive south of Bastia is the hilly region of Castagniccia, which takes its name from the chestnut trees that grow abundantly here. The traditional stone-roofed houses all have chestnut-drying rooms.

This peaceful countryside is dotted with ancient hilltop villages, small hamlets, and magnificent churches. Many of the churches, such as the ornately adorned Baroque Eglise Saints-Pierre-et-Paul in Piedicroce and the 18th-century Eglise Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel in Stoppia Nova, are listed as Monuments Historiques .

In a sublime natural setting, the Couvent d'Alesani (another Monument Historique ) in Piazzali has an inspiring spiritual ambience. You may take a guided tour in July and August and on the Journées du Patrimoine in September. During that period, tours are offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays between 3:30pm and 7pm. The convent also hosts summertime events.

Adventurous hikers can climb Monte San Petrone (1,767-meter altitude) from the starting point of Piedicroce or from the Col de Prato; either way the six-kilometer ascent takes about five or six hours. The trail traverses rocky mountain ridges, above chestnut-tree forests, valleys, and little hamlets. From the summit, the vistas sweep across the Mediterranean Sea to the coastline of Italy.

Bouches de Bonifacio Nature Reserve

The UNESCO-listed Bouches de Bonifacio Nature Reserve is a protected marine environment that includes all of the waters in French territory, from the tip of southern Corsica extending to the French Riviera and Italian coastline.

Covering 80,000 hectares, the reserve also includes marshland, lagoons, and other coastal areas. Many rare, protected species of birds and fish thrive in this ecosystem.

A highlight of the Bouches de Bonifacio is the Lavezzi Islands marine reserve, a top snorkeling and scuba diving destination in Corsica. Beneath the translucent turquoise waters, a magical underwater world awaits deep-sea divers. Sightings include colorful and exotic fish such as the rainbow wrasse and the silver bream.

Many companies organize snorkeling and scuba diving expeditions; advanced booking is recommended. Boat tours and dinner cruises (departing from Bonifacio or Porte Vecchio) are available for those who prefer to simply relax and enjoy the scenery.

Belgodère

This medieval hilltop village will steal your heart with its enchanting ambience and sensational vistas. Exceptional panoramic views of the sea and the Regino Valley are found throughout the village.

If you're here for a beach holiday, you'll find everything you need in Belgodère and nearby. Below the historic part of Belgodère is a modern beach resort with many hotels, vacation rentals, and restaurants.

Be sure to explore the old walled area of Belgodère (the Cabanne and Cima du Fondu quarters). You will enjoy wandering around the winding streets, relaxing at an outdoor café terrace, and discovering historic monuments.

The Baroque Eglise Saint-Thomas displays a noteworthy 16th-century Virgin and Child painting.

Réserve Naturelle de Scandola

A surreal coastal landscape awaits you at the Réserve Naturelle de Scandola. Overlooking the Gulf of Porto, this UNESCO-listed nature reserve is only accessible by boat.

The Scandola Nature Reserve encompasses a remote mountainous peninsula and offshore islands formed from an ancient volcano. Crystal-clear turquoise waters lap against cliffs and hidden coves.

Scuba and snorkeling enthusiasts, rejoice! You will find here some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in Corsica. Marine life includes dolphins, seals, moray eels, swordfish, and coral reefs.

Shuttle boats depart frequently from Calvi and less frequently from Porto and Galéria. Many companies offer organized tours, for an easier way to visit.

Désert des Agriates

The Désert des Agriates is a vast protected wilderness of scrubland, agricultural plains, craggy coastline, and cream-colored sandy shores. If you're planning a summertime visit to the Agriates Desert, you will probably want to sunbathe at pristine sandy beaches.

Two favorite beaches are the Plage de Lotu and the Plage de Saleccia , prized for their soft white sand and transparent waters. Both beaches are ideal for sunbathing and swimming.

The Plage de l'Ostriconi , tucked away behind sand dunes, feels like a secret spot because of its secluded quality.

Besides lounging at the beach, other things to do in the Désert des Agriates include hiking, nature walks, and fishing.

GR20 Hiking Trail

Corsica's GR20 trail traverses the island of Corsica from north to south, covering wild and remote hillsides and deep gorges. Extreme outdoor adventure enthusiasts and advanced hikers hold this trail in high esteem.

The trail is considered to be the most difficult long-distance hike in Europe . Not only is the trail extremely long, the terrain is rugged and dramatic. Those who are sufficiently conditioned to attempt the hike will ultimately be rewarded with jaw-dropping panoramas.

Col de Bavella

If you're touring Corsica by car, the scenic drive through the Col de Bavella is highly recommended. The road travels through majestic landscapes and along the path of an ancient Roman road, continuing up to the mountain pass at 1,243 meters. From that point, there are breathtaking views of the forests and plains, the mountains, and the sea.

Forêt de Valdo Niello

The Valdo-Niello Forest is an unspoiled environment of shady Corsican pine trees that can reach heights of 50 meters. The specific variety of tree, the Laricio Pine, is emblematic of Corsica. These dense woodlands provide a habitat for bird species such as the Corsican Nuthatch.

Also within the forest is Corsica's highest mountain, Monte Cinto , which soars to 2,706 meters and is snowcapped even in summer.

A variety of walking paths and hiking trails wind through the forest. Taking a hike here is an invigorating experience that allows you to breathe in the fresh air and admire the natural beauty.

You have done a great job here with Corsica and really inspired us to hopefully make a trip there sooner rather than later. Love the picture of Sartene and the stereotypical Corsican town!! Thanks Kat, great collection of images.

41 Fantastic Things to Do in Corsica

March 29, 2024 by Silvia Leave a Comment

I’ve always loved France, but when my parents moved to Strasbourg in 2019 I became even more eager to explore the country. And one French destination that had been on my bucket list for years was Corsica. A few of my Norwegian friends had visited Corsica on day trips from Italy, but otherwise I only seemed to hear of Corsica from French people taking summer holidays there. And of course I want to vacation in France like the French do!

I’m also so intrigued by island culture. After living on a tiny Japanese island for two years, I now always seem to be drawn to visiting islands, from the Faroe Islands to Shetland to the Falkland Islands , Greenland  and Mallorca . But I had never visited a French island before – unless you count the briefly French Comoros Islands , where I did get to practice my less than great French.

So when my friend Sher and I started talking about taking a late summer beach holiday together, I immediately suggested Corsica. And I’m so glad that I did, because visiting Corsica was an actual dream come true. I knew Corsica would have beautiful towns and beaches and mountains, but I was still absolutely blown away by France’s Île de Beauté.

Silvia in bonifacio corsica

And it was fun to see French island life!

Corsica lies north of the Italian island of Sardinia and as the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean, there are many different experiences you can have here. Corsica has beautiful beaches, dramatic mountains full of hiking trails, picturesque little villages, and cities and towns steeped in history (Napoleon was from Corsica!). Sher and I opted for a bit of everything, with a road trip looping around most of the island, taking us by beautiful beaches, mountains, cities and villages.

We spent two weeks in Corsica, but I think you could follow this same itinerary in ten days or even a week if you have less time. Or you could always skip a couple stops and do a smaller loop instead.  I’ve also shared a guide for where to stay in Corsica here .

Quick Corsica Travel Guide

Corsica Accommodation: Hôtel Pozzo di Borgo in Ajaccio , Kasano & Spa in Calvi , Hôtel du Nord in Corte , Hotel Le Tourisme in Zonza (Bavella), Hotel Costa Salina in Porto Vecchio , and Solemare in Bonifacio .

Corsica car rental: compare  Corsica car rental rates here

Things to do in Corsica, France

You can certainly visit Corsica without a car, especially if you stick to areas connected by trains and boats. However I was so happy we rented a car so that we could really explore the island. Rental cars are fairly inexpensive in Corsica, and I found it easy driving here, as there’s not too much traffic and the roads are mostly on the smaller side. Even the mountain roads, while steep and narrow, were totally doable!

Driving in Corsica actually reminded me a lot of driving in Mallorca, another one of my favorite European islands. The views are stunning, and it was so nice to be able to pull over for photos or a spontaneous cup of coffee at all of Corsica’s prettiest spots.

driving in Corsica

The only place I wouldn’t have wanted to have a rental car in Corsica was Ajaccio, as the traffic there is more chaotic and parking is expensive. Sher and I avoided this by waiting to pick up our rental car at the airport until after we had spent our first few days in Ajaccio. This also worked out well because our hotel offered a free airport pickup.

Car rental in Corsica is quite cheap, though you might have trouble finding an automatic car if you don’t drive manual (I had to do all the driving here, as Sher only drives automatic). Sher and I booked our Corsica car rental on Auto Europe, which compares rental prices from all the different companies to find the best price. We flew in and out of Ajaccio, so we picked our car up at the airport there. You can check car rental prices and availability on AutoEurope here .

Ajaccio, Corsica

Sher and I started our trip with a few days in Ajaccio, but this would also be a great place to finish your trip if you’re flying into/out of Ajaccio. Either way, I definitely think Ajaccio is worth at least a day or two. Ajaccio is the capital of Corsica and it’s such a pretty city with lots of great restaurants and shops as well as a long city beach. And here you can also visit Napoleon’s childhood home , which is now a national museum.

Napoleon Museum Ajaccio

I will say that Ajaccio is quite a laidback city to visit, without too many sites or attractions you need to track down. Visiting Ajaccio is more about strolling through the beautiful palm lined streets with colorful pastel buildings, stopping for coffee to people watch at one of Ajaccio’s many street side cafes, and perhaps heading down to the beach to dip your feet in the sea.

Sher and I stayed at the Hôtel Pozzo di Borgo in Ajaccio’s old-town. The hotel is also just a few doors down from the Bonaparte residence, and it was quite fun to stay in Napoleon’s old neighborhood. The hotel also happens to be housed in a mansion belonging to the family of Charles André Pozzo di Borgo, Napoleon’s archnemesis!

I also loved that the central location meant we could explore Ajaccio on foot.

ajaccio, Corsica

Things to do in Ajaccio

  • Visit St. François Beach , Ajaccio’s city beach. This long beach is right in the city center with a beautiful palm tree lined promenade next to it with cafés, shops and restaurants.
  • Explore Ajaccio on foot . The Old Town is so pretty, and downtown Ajaccio is very walkable. If you want to learn more about the city, you could join a walking tour like this private must-see attractions tour .
  • Visit Maison Bonaparte , the ancestral home of Napoleon Bonaparte. This is right in the Old Town, which is a wonderful area to explore on foot.
  • Visit Naporama , a small museum by the citadel with several fun handmade dioramas depicting different aspects of Napoleon’s life.
  • Take a boat trip exploring the Corsican coast and small surrounding islands. This 8 hour boat trip to the Calanques of Piana takes you through the Gulf of Girolata where you can see the caves in the Scandola Natural Reserve, a World Heritage Site. Or if you want something shorter, this 3 hour boat trip to the Sanguinaires Islands also looks really fun. Or this 12 person 5 hour boat trip to Cala di Cupabia looks absolutely beautiful.
  • Take a day trip to Bonifacio . This boat trip from Ajaccio takes you to Bonifacio , where you can spend two hours exploring the town. Bonifacio is quite small, so two hours should be plenty of time here, and the journey will be beautiful.

Where to eat in Ajaccio

Ajaccio has lots of restaurants and cafés, and none we went to required a reservation, so you should easily be able to find food here. My three favorite restaurants I ate at in Ajaccio were Brasserie L’Instant , Pastificio e Risotteria and Le 20123 , which has a set menu of a traditional Corsican food (I loved it, but it might not be ideal for picky eaters, as they only have two choices for each course).

Brasserie L'Instant Ajaccio

Brasserie L’Instant

Calenques de Piana

After Ajaccio, Sher and I drove up to Calvi and wow, what an incredible drive it was. If you’re heading north from Ajaccio to Calvi, definitely consider taking the extra time to take the mountain route along D81 .

D81 Drive Corsica

This drive is spectacular and quite thrilling at times, with narrow passages and steep cliffside drops into the UNESCO protected Gulf of Porto. That might sound scary, but I promise it’s more beautiful than intimidating. I’m not a particularly great driver and I had no problems at all driving here.

Calenques de Piana, Corsica

The best part of this drive is passing the Calenques de Piana, towering sculpture-like red rocks and cliffs that glisten in the sun. You can also see these by boat, but driving through them between Porto and Piana is quite an experience.

Sentier des Muletiers hike

Corsica is of course a popular hiking destination, and there are several hikes you can do around the Calenques de Piana. The Sentier des Muletiers hike starts here (with parking). And then you can extend the circuit into other signposted trails, or return to your starting point.

Capo Rosso hike

One of the most popular hikes in the area is the Capo Rosso hike, which starts here . I haven’t done this hike (yet) but it’s supposed to be beautiful (and very challenging) and take about 5 hours.

Calvi harbor

Calvi is my favorite place I stayed in Corsica! Calvi has such a wonderful laidback vibe, and it’s big enough to have lots of restaurants, shops and streets to explore, while small enough to feel like home after only a day here. I quickly found my favorite bakery for morning almond croissants, and each evening Sher and I enjoyed picking a new beachside restaurant for dinner.

Calvi waterfront restaurants

Calvi has a long beach perfect for early morning strolls and afternoon drinks. I also found the people here to be surprisingly friendly – this is France after all. Ah I loved Calvi so much, even writing about it now has me eager to return.

Calvi harbor walk

Where to stay in Calvi

Sher and I stayed at Kasano & Spa , which is a stylish spa hotel right by the citadel. In fact our room had a balcony with an incredible view over the citadel – one of the best hotel views of our trip! We didn’t get breakfast at the hotel, but instead each morning I would walk to a bakery and have a croissant and coffee while Sher slept in.

The hotel also has a beautiful pool area with the most comfortable sun loungers I think I’ve ever sat in.

Things to do in Calvi

  • Explore Calvi on foot .  Downtown Calvi is small, but oh so pretty. Walk through the cobblestone streets, stopping at Santa Maria Maggiore’s stunning pink church. Then walk along the water and stop for a drink or ice cream in one of Calvi’s many seafront restaurants.
  • Take a boat trip from Calvi , like this 2-hour sunset cruise  or this 6 hour boat trip to the UNESCO Scandola Nature Reserve, with swimming, exploring sea caves, and a stop in the village of Girolata.
  • Walk up the Calvi citadel for sunset .
  • Visit the Domaine Alzipratu vineyard . You can book a wine tasting here .
  • 4×4 Agriate Desert excursion
  • Go diving on this first dive experience

train from Calvi Corsica

Where to eat in Calvi

There are many restaurants downtown and along the beach, and none of them seemed to require a reservation. Probably my favorite restaurant I ate at was Chez Dume , where we had traditional Corsican food. And my favorite bakery in Calvi was Amadeus Boulangerie .

downtown Calvi

Sher and I stopped for lunch in Corte on our way from Calvi to Porto-Vecchio and we fell so in love with Corte that we ended up spending all day there. In fact if we hadn’t already booked our hotel in Porto-Vecchio I would have been so happy to spend a night or two here.

The approach to Corte is truly spectacular, as you see the town’s citadel perched on top of a dramatic pinnacle. The town is small, but it was actually Corsica’s capital from 1755 to 1769. Today Corte is home to Corsica’s only university, the University of Corsica Pasquale Paoli.

Corte was probably the prettiest town I visited in Corsica, with its colorful buildings, narrow cobblestone alleys and dramatic mountain views.

Corte, Corsica

Things to do in Corte

  • Walk around the beautiful Old Town.
  • Take the Petit Train around town – perfect if you need some help up the steep streets to the top of the town.
  • Visit the Museum of Corsica , which tells the history of Corsica and offers access to the Citadel of Corte.
  • Walk up to the Belvédère panoramic viewpoint.
  • Enjoy a meal or drink at one of Corte’s many lovely cafés or restaurants.
  • Horse riding by the river Tavignanu
  • Hike to L’Arche de Corte.
  • Hike through the Restonica Valley to to Lac du Melo and Lac de Capitellu , about a 25 minute scenic drive out of Corte.

Where to stay in Corte

Next time I visit Corsica I would love to spend a night or two in Corte. The Hôtel U Passa Tempu  looks like a great option, right in the town center.

Corte, Corsica

Sher and I didn’t have time to visit Bastia, however if we had had a few more days I would have loved to see Bastia as well. So I’m including it here in case you want to look into going. And if you do go, let me know in the comments how you liked it! I definitely want to return to Corsica soon and would love to see more of the island.

Zonza & Bavella

When asking French friends about Corsica, many mentioned the importance of visiting inland towns and villages, as inner Corsica is quite different from the coastline. I saw this in Corte and again in the lovely mountain village of Zonza. The pace here is different and we’ve left behind the glamor of the yacht lined marinas of the coast.

Zonza mostly draws visitors for its mountain views and access to hikes. If you’ve come to Corsica for the mountains, you definitely want to spend some time in Zonza. This is also where you can stay while visiting the dramatic Aiguilles de Bavella and the nearby villages of Solenzara and Lecci.

The Aiguilles de Bavella feature dramatic granite spikes and waterfalls. This is also a popular place for canyoning, where you can jump and slide down waterfalls and into the water in nature’s waterpark. You can find canyoning activities for a variety of adventure levels here.

Where to stay in Zonza

Hotel le Tourisme is the nicest hotel in Zonza, with a sauna, a hot tub and an outdoor pool with beautiful views.

Things to do in Zonza & Bavella

  • Take one of the many hiking route s from Zonza
  • Drive to l’Ospedale lake
  • Have a (wonderful!) meal at A Pignata (be sure to make a reservation)

Porto-Vecchio

Porto-Vecchio, Corsica

Porto-Vecchio lies on Corsica’s southeast coast, near some of Corsica’s most beautiful beaches. If you’re coming to Corsica for a beach holiday, Porto-Vecchio makes a wonderful base. The town itself has an impressive 16th century citadel and an Old Town with Roman origins.

Porto-Vecchio is stunning, however if I had to skip one place on this itinerary it might be Porto-Vecchio. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the town, but I loved everywhere else I visited in Corsica even more. I would say Porto-Vecchio is most worth visiting for its surrounding beaches.

Plage de Saint Antoine

Saint Antoine Beach

The highlight of my stay here was definitely the nearby beaches, and I also loved heading up to the Old Town each evening for dinner.

Otherwise my favorite thing about Porto-Vecchio was probably its easy access to Bonifacio, which is just a 30 minute drive away. We visited Bonifacio a couple of time for lunch and dinner, and I think next time I might opt to stay in Bonifacio instead of Porto-Vecchio. The two towns are so close to each other that you could simply look at the available hotels in each and choose based on which hotel you like the most.

Where to stay in Porto-Vecchio

Sher and I stayed at Hotel Costa Salina , which we loved for its beautiful pool and jacuzzi. The hotel is right by Porto-Vecchio’s yacht filled marina, and about a 15-minute walk from the Old Town.

Porto-Vecchio beaches

Plage de Palombaggia

Plage de Palombaggia

  • Plage de Saint Antoine // this was my favorite beach. You do have to walk about 20 minutes from the road, but the views down are worth the walk.
  • Plage de Santa Giulia
  • Plage de Carataggio
  • Plage de Tamaricciu
  • Plage de Palombaggia // beach club Nautical Club Palombaggia with lounge chairs

Nautical Club Palombaggia

Things to do in Porto-Vecchio

  • Wander through the Old Town .
  • Take a day boat trip with swimming and snorkeling
  • Take this evening boat ride with a swimming stop and aperitif.
  • Go sea kayaking
  • Take a day trip to Sardinia   by boat
  • Take a day trip to Bonifacio

Where to eat in Porto-Vecchio

la table de nathalie Porto Vecchio

Most restaurants in Porto-Vecchio require a reservation, even when they’re not full, so definitely try to make a reservation before heading out to dinner! I was surprised to learn that most restaurants take reservations on Instagram, so if you find a restaurant you’re interested in, check out their Instagram and send them a message.

My two favorite restaurants I ate at in Porto-Vecchio were Cantina di l’Orriu and La Table de Nathalie . And now that I think of it, they might have been two of my favorite restaurants I ate at in Corsica.

Bonifacio marina

As soon as I saw a photo of Bonifacio I knew I had to visit one day. And I’m not the only person who has had that thought – Bonifacio is Corsica’s most popular tourist town. Bonifacio is built on the sparkling white cliffs of the southern tip of Corsica, just a javelin’s throw from Sardinia. The medieval Old Town and its impressive citadel actually extends out a bit over the water which has cut into the cliffside. It’s dramatic and beautiful and very much worth a visit.

Bonifacio Corsica

Where to stay in Bonifacio

Sher and I opted to stay in Porto-Vecchio and drive into Bonifacio (there’s a large parking lot right downtown). However, if we had stayed in Bonifacio I probably would have chosen Solemar , Hotel la Caravelle , or Santateresa .

Things to do in Bonifacio

Bonifacio Corsica

  • Walk along the marina downtown.
  • Walk up to the citadel for beautiful views over the water and Bonifacio’s medieval Old Town.
  • Follow the steep Staircase of the King of Aragon down to the water below the Old Town.
  • Take a boat trip like this 3 hour boat trip to Bonifacio National Park or this luxury private 8 hour boat trip .
  • Go sea kayaking in the caves of Bonifacio

Where to eat in Bonifacio

Bonifacio is another place in Corsica where you really need a reservation for dinner. Sher and I had dinner at Da Passano , a lovely Mediterranean tapas restaurant along the water.

This selection may be useful for you to prepare an itinerary and organise your stay in Corsica, giving you a taste of the best things to do and places to see.

The practical information is evolving rapidly, so don’t hesitate to leave a comment if there are any points to change or if you want to share good tips before visiting Corsica.

Here are 20 essential things to do and see during a trip to Corsica:

Located on the west coast of Corsica, the town of Ajaccio is first visited by its large market to taste Corsican cheese, cold meats and also to discover local crafts. Culturally, Ajaccio is not to be outdone with the Palais Fesch, which houses the Musée des beaux-arts, which is labelled Musée de France. Built from 1820 by Cardinal Joseph Fesch, who is none other than Napoleon’s uncle, this museum houses a very large collection of Italian and Corsican paintings as well as an exceptional Napoleonic collection.

It’s in Bastia that we understand the importance of Corsica’s maritime trade with its old port hosting many pleasure boats and fishing boats. We take advantage of its narrow cove to stroll along the quays and taste the local cuisine thanks to the many restaurants installed in this old port. Protected by the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, we can see a marble statue of the Virgin Mary which ensures the protection of sailors. In addition, the Palace of the Governors erected from 1380 onwards is a monument not to be missed, as is the Biguglia Pond Nature Reserve.

3. CALVI AND ITS CITADEL

An intrepid explorer, Christopher Columbus was born in Calvi where the remains of his birthplace can still be seen. Classified as a historical monument in 1992, the citadel of Calvi dates from the 13th century and provides access to a 360° panorama. You can then admire the marina, the surrounding mountains and, in good weather, the French Alps. As you stroll along the cobbled streets, you will stop at Saint-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral, home to the Black Christ of Miracles. The Salt Tower and Saint Anthony’s Oratory are also two historical sites that must be seen in this citadel!

4. THE LAVEZZI ISLANDS

Located to the south-east of Bonifacio, the Lavezzi Islands are an archipelago composed of 23 islands, the most famous of which are Piana, Cavallo and Lavazzu. The latter is the most appreciated thanks to its beaches, coves and cultural remains such as the ruins of the Santa Maria chapel or its lighthouse. In addition, a variety of wildlife such as the ashen shearwater or the crested cormorant can be found there.

5.  BAVELLA PEAKS ( AIGUILLES DE BAVELLA)

To begin hiking in the high mountains, the Bavella Pass is the ideal place to enjoy the relief of Corsica. At an altitude of 1,243m, this pass offers the possibility of reaching the aiguilles de Bavella, the starting point for many hikes. Located in the south of Corsica, these needles are famous for their colours ranging from red to grey. In addition, in good weather, you can see the island of Monte Cristo. In the heart of the regional natural park, these peaks reach an altitude of 1,218m and allow you to enjoy the shade of laricio pines, which are sometimes centuries old!

6. THE BEACHES OF PALOMBAGGIA AND RONDINARA (NEAR PORTO VECCHIO)

Southern Corsica has white sandy beaches surrounded by turquoise water such as Palombaggia beach . It is surrounded by maritime pines and junipers, but it is above all its red rocks that give it its unique charm. The beach of Rondinara , on the other hand, has been classified as the 3rd most beautiful beach in Europe. Located in a creek, we take pleasure in resting to relax and enjoy a calm landscape where the fauna and flora have preserved their assets despite a strong tourist popularity.

7. THE VALLEY OF THE ASCO

With three municipalities, the Asco valley is an essential place for mountain lovers. Located in the regional natural park of Corsica, this valley is appreciated by climbers who will be able to reach its peak at an altitude of 2,000m. Offering several activities such as kayaking, swimming or hiking, this valley also offers the opportunity to discover Corsican remains such as the ruins of the Monastery of Saint-François di Caccia. You can rest in an idyllic setting on the banks of the Asco river and the village of the same name is the perfect place to eat with local produce.

8. THE CORSICAN CAPE AND ITS LANDSCAPES

Cap Corse is renowned for its trails that allow you to hike in the wilderness while enjoying unique landscapes. Composed of a 40km long tongue of land, Cap Corse is discovered by its villages such as Erbalunga, a typical fishing port. The village of Sisco offers a pleasant view of the island of Elba and the grey pebble beach of Nonza is the ideal place to recharge your batteries. The Customs path is an absolute must to discover wild landscapes where nature has preserved its rights!

9. SANGUINAIRES ISLANDS AND THE ‘POINTE DE LA PARATA’

Accessible only by boat and located at the entrance of the Gulf of Ajaccio, the îles sanguinaires (“bloodthirsty islands”) are an archipelago of 5 uninhabited islands. The largest one is the island of Mezzu Mare where more than 150 species of plants can be found. To enjoy an exceptional panorama on these îles sanguinaires , it is necessary to go to the point of Parata which hosts a 15m high Genoese tower. Along the footpaths, you will cross the road of a semaphore, a lighthouse or the remains of a lazaret.

10. THE WHITE CLIFFS OF BONIFACIO

These cliffs are natural walls and are a natural reserve for fauna and flora. It can be reached by two paths called Strada Veccia and Campu Romanillo. In addition, we will focus on the “grain of sand” which is a spur of marine erosion. These limestone cliffs of Bonifacio protect the city as well as seabirds such as cormorants and gulls. On the plant side, you can find sarsaparilla as well as wild astragalus.

[instagram url=https://www.instagram.com/p/Blr_qIyFqcJ/ hidecaption=true width=400]

11. TASTE CORSICAN SPECIALITIES

Corsica is also discovered by the taste buds because there are many specialities, a large part of which is based on the famous Corsican cheese: brocciu. Made from goat’s or sheep’s milk, this cheese is found in fiadone, a lemon flan. Olive oil is also worth a visit, as is the charcuterie, which can be enjoyed as a coppa, lonzu or figatellu. Feeding exclusively on acorns and chestnuts, the black Corsican pigs offer a delicatessen with a unique taste. We will not forget to taste Corsican jams and honeys as well as myrtle liqueur!

12. SWIMMING IN THE GORGES

Ideal for beginners, the Restonica Gorge is home to a lush forest in the heart of which you can swim. Its hiking trail leads to the Grotelle sheepfolds made of dry stone. The Asco Gorge , on the other hand, extends over 9km and consists of rocky ridges, the highest of which (Monte Terello) reaches an altitude of 1,000m. Surrounded by a lavender scrub, these gorges offer a total change of scenery. To enjoy natural swimming pools, you have to go to the Manganellu valley where the gorges are protected by pine forests that are sometimes centuries old.

[instagram url=https://www.instagram.com/p/BkFTIVBjEMZ/ hidecaption=true width=400]

13. THE GULF OF PORT

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Gulf of Porto is made up of several natural sites such as the Scandola Reserve, where you can see the rock of kisses and elephants, as well as a variety of wildlife such as golden eagles and ospreys. The calanches of Piana are impressive with their pink granite cliffs and their multiple coves and caves. With its turquoise water, islets and scrubland, the Gulf of Porto is part of the regional natural park of Corsica.

14. PIANA CREEKS (CALANQUES DE PIANA)

Located in the Gulf of Porto, the creeks of Piana show all the beauty of nature. We discover impressive rocks because of their size but also because of their natural sculpture. We will then see a rock in the shape of a heart or a dog’s head. To fully enjoy these creeks, you can take various hikes along the Capo Rosso Tower trail or the old muleteers’ trail, for example. We will then come across wild flora and rare fauna such as eagles, cormorants and ospreys.

[instagram url=https://www.instagram.com/p/BlsJShOh8fw/ hidecaption=true width=400]

15. THE GENOESE TOWER OF CAMPOMORO

Located in South Corsica, the Genoese tower of Campomoro is the highest tower in Corsica with a height of 15m. Built from the 16th century, this tower is classified as a historic monument and its star-shaped enclosure wall makes it even more atypical. Its visit is not free of charge but is really worth a visit because you can enjoy a permanent exhibition retracing the history of the Genoese towers and then access its terrace. Offering a 360° panorama, this promontory offers a view of Campomoro Bay as well as Cap de Muro and Eccica Island.

16. SANTA GIULIA BEACH

Santa Giulia beach is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is located in the southern Gulf of Porto-Vecchio. Easy to access thanks to its gentle slopes, this beach extends over 2km long. Its turquoise waters and fine white sand make this beach an ideal place to rest. Many aquatic activities are available such as pedal boat or jet ski. You can also eat there thanks to the huts and restaurants on the edge of this beach, which is very popular with summer visitors.

[instagram url=https://www.instagram.com/p/BloNaH4gTxN/ hidecaption=true width=400]

17. THE PREHISTORIC SITE OF FILITOSA AND ITS STATUE-MENHIRS

Discovered in 1946, the prehistoric site of Filitosa is unique because its history goes back more than 8,000 years. This site, which is open to visitors, houses a 1,200-year-old olive tree classified as a remarkable tree in France. Walking around this exceptional site, we discover several statue-menhirs, the highest of which (about 2m) is called Filitosa V. Dating back to the ancient Neolithic period, the Filitosa site also contains the remains of a Torrean village.

18. DO THE GR20 HIKE

Very difficult, the GR20 allows you to discover the Corsican mountains from the North-West to the South-East. This 170 km long hike is to be prepared in advance because its route will be chaotic for those who are not familiar with mountain trekking. With several refuges and stops, we take the time to discover Lake Nino at an altitude of 1,743m and the famous Capu Tafunutu mountain, which rises to 2,335m. We will stay there to enjoy the panorama in front of the hole of the arch of the Col des Maures, which is an essential part of the GR20.

[instagram url=https://www.instagram.com/p/BlpqNtRH0k5/ hidecaption=true width=400]

19. TAKE A TRIP TO THE SCANDOLA RESERVE

With several tours available from Porto, the Scandola reserve is accessible only by boat. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1975, this reserve is home to an exceptional fauna and flora, some of whose species are protected. Nests of ospreys, crested cormorants or bearded vultures can be seen. Mammals are also present such as salamanders or cistuous turtles. Offshore, you can admire bottlenose dolphins and monk seals, which are becoming increasingly rare.

20. THE AGRIATES DESERT

The Agriates desert is mainly composed of rockeries, dunes and forests. However, it has some very nice surprises in store thanks to its paradisiacal beaches that can only be reached on foot or by boat. Lodo beach is accessible via the Chemin des Douaniers and offers a natural setting that is very popular with holidaymakers. Not far from there, the beach of La Saleccia is 1km long and is surrounded by Aleppo pines. The Agriates desert has several other beaches such as Malfacu or Ghignu.

Road Trip in South Corsica : 1 week Itinerary

road trip in corsica itinerary

Article mis à jour le 12 Jun 2024

Itinerary 1 week in South Corsica

In our opinion, Corsica is an unmissable destination that lends itself perfectly to road trip . Mountainous hills, natural pools, dream beaches… in Corsica, there’s something for everyone! In this article, we’ll help you organise your trip with a 1 week itinerary in Southern Corsica .

  • Days 1 to 2 : Propriano
  • Days 3 to 5 : Bonifacio, continuation of the Corsica road trip
  • Days 6 to 7 : Porto Vecchio, last stage of the road trip in Corsica
  • BONUS : Visit the interior via Zonza

Our one-week road trip in Corsica

We focused on Southern Corsica for 7 days . If you have the same time, we strongly recommend that you travel to only one part of the island . Indeed, the island of beauty is still quite vast and the winding roads make it sometimes long to arrive from point A to point B. The landscapes of Corsica have reminded us a lot of those of the Reunion Island (with much more beautiful beaches). Moreover, to discover our two-week itinerary in Reunion, click here .

In short : you will not be able to visit everything in a week in Corsica , so take the time to quietly discover the stages that we are going to offer you and to enjoy them.

Practical information for your road trip in Corsica

How to get to corsica .

Two options are available to you for traveling to Corsica :

✈️ Where can I buy plane tickets to Corsica ?

Plane : the fastest means of transport. There are three main airports in Corsica: Bastia, Ajaccio and Figari. To visit southern Corsica, we recommend landing at Ajaccio or Figari. Find the best airfares here thanks to Ulysse. Take advantage of a €15 discount on your first booking by registering via our link .

Ferry : Corsica Ferries are available from Nice and Toulon. By booking in advance, you may find tickets at a good price. Depending on the fare, the ferry may be more economical than the plane as it does not require renting a car in Corsica if you are crossing with your own vehicle. Reservation here

Rent a car for your road trip in Corsica

We booked our car rental through the Skyscanner comparator . He found us an offer with the car rental company Sixt at Ajaccio airport. Everything went very well.

Rent a boat to visit Corsica in a different way :

Discover the magic of Corsica in an exceptional way by renting a boat with Click and Boat . Soak up the wild beauty of the island, giving you total freedom to explore almost inaccessible sites.

What budget for a week of road trip in Corsica ?

Corsica is quite expensive. Prices are on average 20% higher than on the mainland . Here is the budget detail for our trip to Corsica :

  • Flights Lyon – Ajaccio : 75€ per person
  • Car Rental : 200€ for the week
  • Gasoline fees : 100€ for around 700 km traveled
  • Hotels : 100€ per night on average in high season
  • Restaurants : 50€ per day per person for 2 meals

Total = 1 850€ for a 7-night stay =  925€ per person , excluding activities.

Note : this budget can obviously vary according to the price of car rentals and planes, but also according to the standard of the hotels / restaurants you choose. We are only talking about our experience here.

When to go to Corsica ?

As with many European destinations, the best time to travel to Corsica is from May to June , then September to October . During these 4 months, the temperatures are mild and you avoid school holidays. This has two advantages: lower prices and fewer tourists.

However, Corsica is beautiful all year round! In winter you can even ski with a sea view.

Road Trip in South Corsica : one week itinerary

Days 1 to 2: propriano.

For the start of your road trip in Corsica , we recommend that you book your first two nights in Propriano . This base is ideal for exploring the surroundings.

Where to sleep in Propriano ?

southern Corsica itinerary

At  Casa Mare E Vista , a guest house with elegantly decorated sea view rooms and a beautiful outdoor swimming pool. Very good value for money for Corsica !

What to do in Propriano and its surroundings ?

We have spread this program over 2 days so that you can enjoy each place with confidence, without rushing.

Roccapina Beach

Unmissable during your weekly trip in Corsica , Roccapina beach is one of our favorites in southern Corsica. The sand is white and the water is translucent. We recommend that you take the short hike that leads to the Genoese tower of Roccapina . You will see that the landscape is even more beautiful when you gain height. The more courageous will continue the path to the famous Lion of Roccapina rock , for an even more panoramic view.

⏱   Duration : allow about 40 minutes round trip to the Genoese tower or 2 hours round trip to the lion rock

Roccapina Beach : access

To access it, you don’t even have to walk ! Lots of people park in the parking lot near the main road and walk 7 km round trip. However, two large car parks are free at Roccapina beach . The path to get there is bumpy but still passable. Don’t be afraid and go (slow).

Once you get to the end, you will have an intersection with two possibilities : keep to the right to be as close as possible to the start of the short hike !

road trip in Corsica

Lunch at the Acciola sheepfold

The hike to Roccapina will probably have made you hungry. That’s good, because we’ve found a great place to eat nearby.

Meet at Acciola’s sheepfold to taste Corsican specialties and with a magnificent view, please ! We tasted the burger and the aubergines Bonifacienne : to die for 🤤 The products are local, fresh and cooked with passion.

Our advice : call ahead to book a table.

trip to southern Corsica

Visit of the Village of Sartène

Sartène is a typical Corsican village , highly recommended by tourist guides. Well, without wanting to offend anyone, we found him a bit on the side. Yes, the few stone streets have their charm, but the tourist shops are not typical.

You can still take a walk for an hour in Sartène to digest, on the way back to Propriano, in order to form your own opinion.

You can also opt for an even more enjoyable ride by renting an electric bike.

Aperitif and dinner at Charlot

A sunset with a view of Propriano bay , accompanied by traditional Corsican cuisine 🍴 If that makes you want as much as we do, go to the restaurant Chez Charlot in Viggianello !

Reservation strongly recommended to have the best table on the terrace.

Swimming in the Baraci river

With these rocks in red / orange tones, it feels like another country ! For a quiet swim in (a little) cool water, it’s here. The access is quite steep but without great difficulty. See GPS coordinates

road trip in Corsica 1 week

Kayaking excursion in Campomoro Bay

Campomoro Bay is 15 km from Propriano . During this sea kayaking trip , the guide will explain all about the marine fauna! You can also swim in a wild cove on the edge of an island. A little bonus that is pleasant : the effort will be rewarded with a tasting of Corsican sweets 😋.

This activity is accessible to young and old. For info and to book : click here !

Surf Lesson

Surfing in Corsica ? Yes ! When we tell you that we can do anything on the Island of Beauty, we are not lying to you !

If you want to take a surf lesson in Corsica for the first time or even for experienced beginners, you can contact the WaterPlay organization. The team is super nice ! It also takes place in the bay of Campomoro.

Small precision : this activity is only possible on days when there are waves of course.

If you’re not into surfing, I’d recommend a kayak trip to discover the fabulous granite coastline of southern Corsica and its wild coastline.

Wakeboarding lessons in Cupabia Bay

Propriano’s Cupabia bay is the ideal spot for water sports activities. With its heavenly allure, this little-known bay is the perfect place for wakeboarding.

Dinner « Chez Antoine »

To recover from this second sporting day of road trip in Corsica , nothing better than a good dinner! Chez Antoine , you will find a nice decoration, a superb view and very good dishes. The restaurant is best known for its fish and shellfish dishes. Apparently the cocktails at the downstairs bar are delicious ! They also serve tapas, for those who wish.

Days 3 to 5 : Bonifacio, let’s continue the road trip in Corsica

Bonifacio was our favorite stop on this road trip in Southern Corsica . This little town has a lot of charm, but its surroundings have so much more ! The beaches in Bonifacio, wilder than elsewhere , are not to be missed.

Where to sleep in Bonifacio ?

We stayed in a villa at Residence Terra Marina . The accommodations are very well equipped and comfortable, with a real barbecue for the evening meal! The swimming pool at Residence Terra Marina offers an incredible view of the sea, the cliffs and the beautiful town of Bonifacio. Having breakfast with this view is the best way to start a day of road trip in Corsica …

Here are 2 other recommendations if you have a smaller budget :

  • Right in the center of Bonifacio, on the port, the Best Western Hotel du Roy d’Aragon is top notch.
  • More out of the way but with an incredible view of the mountains, A Santa Trinita offers comfortable accommodation at good prices.

ou dormir à bonifacio

What to do in Bonifacio ?

The beach and the trou saint-antoine.

Located in Cap de Pertusatu , Saint-Antoine beach enjoys a privileged location, in the heart of the Bonifacian cliffs . About a hundred meters away is the Trou Saint-Antoine , which houses a small cove accessible by the sea. If you have the motivation, you can swim there from the beach.

Our advice : go in the late morning so that the sun is straight and there is no shade in the hole ! Do not forget your bottle of water, there is no trade on site. Access : 15 minutes by foot from the car park (free). Simply put “plage Saint-Antoine” in your GPS app.

Our Secret Spot

We have found a dream location for you, at the foot of the cliffs, not far from Saint-Antoine beach. Here, no sand, but magnificent blue water. You can swim without any problem, the descent into the sea is via the rocks, where it is very easy to climb back up .

Access : allow 10 minutes to descend from this parking spot . The path is on the bend, there is only one path to the sea. Don’t forget your masks and snorkels !

Petit Sperone & Grand Sperone Beaches

Very well known in Bonifacio , the beaches of Petit and Grand Sperone have the allure of the Caribbean . The water is crystal clear for tens of meters.

We went to  Petit Sperone Beach , very easily accessible in a 15-hour walk from the parking lot (free). Our feeling : we did not like this beach, which is too crowded with a lot of families with children. Outside of school holidays, we might have liked it more!

We have been told that the Grand Sperone beach is less crowded with people because it is still a little further away.

bonifacio what to do

Paddle in Piantarella Beach

Paddle boarding is an activity accessible to the greatest number ! It allows you to explore places differently and to discover secret spots. Meet in the lagoon of Piantarella for a heavenly paddle session.

what to do in bonifacio

The beaches of Paraguan and Fazio

Another small disappointment for us who couldn’t wait to discover Paraguan beach . Once there, a large layer of Posidonia (marine plants which attest to the quality of the water) spread over the entire surface of the sand. Note: Please don’t misinterpret our words – it’s great that these plants are there and the water quality is excellent.

So we decided to walk 20 minutes to Fazio beach , but people on the way told us that it was full of people. U-turn then…

You can still try to see Paraguan Beach because access is easily done by car . A gust of wind may have driven the plants away ! The water is crystal clear, as you can see :

Take an excursion to the Lavezzi islands

The archipel of the Lavezzi Islands , classified as a nature reserve, is unique in the world. Not only will you be able to bathe in crystal clear waters bordered by huge granite rocks, but the return boat trip will also allow you to admire Bonifacio and its cliffs from the sea!

How to visit Lavezzi Islands ?

To get to the Lavezzi Islands, you have the choice between two options :

  • Take a shuttle from the port of Bonifacio. The boat will drop you off in 30 minutes on Lavezzu Island (the main one). The return trip lasts 1 hour to enjoy the landscapes. This solution is more economical but it will only allow you to stop. You can of course stay on site as long as you want. Just don’t miss the last boat ! Here are the prices : Adult : € 37, Student : € 32.50, 13 to 17 years old : 28.50 €, 4 to 12 years old : 18.50 €. No reservation necessary: departures and returns every hour. To park, the boat company has 2 free parking spaces for their customers, ask their port office.
  • Book a day trip . The cruise includes 2 stops : a stop in a cove on Lavezzu Island and a swim in the lagoon of Sperone . This option is more expensive than the previous one, because it includes : a breakfast, a lunch with lobster pasta, and drinks. On the return trip, the captain will also take you to observe the beautiful landscapes of Bonifacio. Price : € 105 per adult with the service provider L’Autre Croisière.

Visit Downtown Bonifacio

Bonifacio , nicknamed “ the City of the Cliffs ”, is a place full of charm. The city is in two parts : on the one hand, the marina with its restaurants, shops and bars; on the other hand, the upper town , which is full of local addresses, small alleys and pretty viewpoints.

What to do in the center of Bonifacio ?

  • Take the King of Aragon stairs : for the modest sum of € 3.50, we invite you to discover the famous King of Aragon stairs, carved by man in the cliff. The landscapes are breathtaking (the same goes for the 187 steps). We advise you to go as soon as it opens at 10 a.m. to keep the heat down and avoid waiting too long. This tour is for people in good physical condition only; it is not recommended for pregnant women or the frail.
  • Getting lost in the alleys : this is the best way to discover the upper town ! Take the opportunity to taste delicious ice cream from Rocca Serra.
  • Go up to the Saint-Roch Chapel : on the way, you can admire beautiful panoramas of the cliffs, the sea and in particular Sardinia. We warn you: it climbs a little ! You can access it by car if necessary, but it is difficult to park.
  • Take a hike : for the more motivated, the hiking trails of Campu Rumanilu and Pertusato allow you to reach the center of Bonifacio. Ideal place for a running or a walk on the cliffs (in complete safety) !

One last tip : the difference in height and the heat do not mix well in Bonifacio. Get up early to enjoy the city without dying of heat and especially to be more peaceful.

Sunset with a view : Bonifacio and its cliffs

Ahhh that makes you want, eh 🤩 Well Named ! As you can see in the following photos, we have found the perfect place to watch the sun set behind the cliffs and landforms of Bonifacio. Here are the GPS coordinates.

⚠️ Be careful when you approach the cliffs, we don’t want an accident.

Dinner on the port of Bonifacio at Del Ferro Restaurant ?

After admiring the sunset , head to the port of Bonifacio for dinner. There are several reasons to eat at Del Ferro :

  • The food is absolutely delicious, with local products
  • Everything is fresh and homemade
  • The price / quality ratio is excellent with good quantities
  • The restaurant is quiet, on the port of Bonifacio
  • The address is brand new, with a bohemian decoration

And our best argument for the end : Restaurant Del Ferro was created by a lovely couple. You will therefore be very well received. We wish them the success they deserve!

Address : 3 quai Banda del Ferro, Bonifacio.

Days 6 à 7 : Porto Vecchio, last stop of the road trip in Corsica

Porto Vecchio  was the last stop on our 1 week Corsica road trip. Time has passed at breakneck speed! We leave this island with the promise of coming back soon … In our opinion, you will do the same !

Where to sleep in Porto Vecchio ?

We stayed at the Santa Giulia Palace residence. Apart from the beauty of the place, the geographical location is ideal: 7 minutes on foot from Santa Giulia beach !

If your budget allows it, let yourself be tempted by a premium apartment . You can enjoy your own jacuzzi in a small tree-lined garden and a Balinese-style outdoor shower. Otherwise, they also offer cheaper accommodation . Within the residence, there are also 3 outdoor swimming pools, including a swimming lane overlooking the bay of Santa Giulia. Rates & reservation

Other recommendations for accommodation in Porto Vecchio :

  • The Alcyon hotel residence , located 200m from the center of Porto Vecchio. Good value for money.
  • The  B&B Auberge Belle Terre , located in Lecci 10 km north of Porto Vecchio. Good for small budgets.

Santa Giulia palace

What to do in Porto Vecchio ?

Purcaraccia waterfalls.

The Purcaraccia waterfalls are undoubtedly our favorite spot on this itinerary in southern Corsica. They are located a little over 50 km from Porto Vecchio, or 1h10 by road. This place will amaze you, in addition to refreshing you ! If you want to fully enjoy it like we did, it is best to get there for 9am maximum. Around 10 a.m., the spot begins to fill up and loses its charm. Also, don’t forget to take water with you to last for several hours. You can go tobogganing and bathe in super clear water. However, it does not exceed 15 ° C.

⏱  Access to Purcaraccia Waterfalls : Paradise has to be earned. Allow around 1 hour of walking to reach the pools (if you are not on the wrong path). Indeed, the trail is not very well marked and contains several intersections. We’ll help orient you to try to get to the top in 35 minutes like us.

How to get to Purcaraccia Waterfalls ?

Here is the exact location where you can park easily. To be at the waterfalls at 9 a.m., you must be parked at 8 a.m.

We warn you : if you decide to go there in the late morning or during the day, cars will be parked in single file for hundreds of meters (in high season, of course). So not only will you not be alone up there, but in addition you will add to the walk by trying as best you can to park somewhere.

Hike to the waterfalls of Purcaraccia :

The first part is quite simple : you will walk for ten minutes on a false rising flat, well signposted Take the opportunity to take pictures of the magnificent needles of Bavella, it is at the beginning that they can be admired at best.

one week road trip itinerary in Corsica

⚠️ Then, in order not to get lost, you must stay as high as possible and never go down to the bed of the river . After about 30 minutes of walking, you will have no choice but to cross the stream. Don’t panic, there are plenty of rocks to cross. But if you can come up with sneakers that can take on water, better. At this point, there is a first small swimming spot to cool off a bit before the final stage : much steeper !

Once you’ve crossed the river, the golden rule remains the same : climb as high as possible ! It’s frustrating because it climbs sharply and you move away from the sound of the waterfalls, but that’s how you’ll get there the fastest.

Is it dangerous ?

Although there is a bit of elevation at the end, the hike does not present any major difficulty , but it is not accessible to very fragile or elderly people either. We have seen families with children (5/6 years old) go up without a problem. There is no climbing to do on this hike contrary to what you can read on the internet. What people call “rock climbing” is just that you have to step over a few large rocks or logs at a few moments.

Once you get to the waterfalls, be careful, it’s slippery !

Corsican natural pools

Canyoning in Corsica

If you want to explore the Purcaraccia waterfalls in a different way, a canyoning trip may be a good idea! It’s a safe way to toboggan and enjoy the canyons. Personally, we wish we did because it sounded super fun. To book, click here !

There are many canyons in Corsica . For those who just want to learn about canyoning , the Pulischellu Canyon is ideal and more suitable for families. Info & booking

Other swimming spots near Porto Vecchio

  • Very close to the waterfalls of Purcaraccia, the waterfalls of Pulischellu are sublime but less impressive. They are accessible in 10 minutes on foot, therefore more frequented.
  • Natural pools of Cavu : just 40 minutes from Porto Vecchio, they are even more crowded than Purcaraccia. As always, we recommend that you get there very early. They are reachable in 10 minutes by foot.

Porto Vecchio and its beaches

The major interest of Porto Vecchio is the beauty of the surrounding beaches. Indeed, the city itself did not convince us. It’s nice to go for a walk in the harbor, have an ice cream or have a drink with a view of the boats… but it is clearly not worth the surroundings. Porto Vecchio is the stage we least enjoyed during this road trip in Corsica . Why ? Because in high season, the beaches are taken by storm !

Let’s start with the most beautiful of all to our liking :

Santa-Giulia Beach

We couldn’t wait to see her and were not disappointed. The water is crystal clear for tens of meters and its rocks reminded us of a famous Seychelles beach. On the other hand, it is very popular! If you don’t like being glued to your neighbors we recommend going early in the morning, or in the evening .

For lovers of sport and sensations, the beach has a nautical center with many activities.

road trip south Corsica

Palombaggia Beach

Palombaggia beach is also heavenly. Like its neighbor, the water is translucent and you have a foot for several meters. Many umbrella pines line the beach and give it a lot of charm.

Palombaggia free parking : Be careful, the beach is very popular and the parking complicated (or expensive) ! We advise you to park here for free as soon as possible. Around 11 am we found it without problem.

porto vecchio beach

Tamaricciu Beach

Right next to Palombaggia beach, this a little wilder and equally beautiful cove. We didn’t have time to go but it is very photogenic with its beautiful rocks and large pine tree by the sea. Free parking is located on the main road which runs along the beach. Otherwise, there is a paid parking lot with easy access to the west of the beach.

Sea Kayaking in Pinarello Bay

To discover one of the most beautiful bays of Porto Vecchio in an original way, nothing better than a kayaking trip ! This activity is accessible to all and lasts half a day. You will discover landscapes worthy of a postcard and you will be able to swim. At the end, a tasting of Corsican specialties is offered to reward the effort.

Information & booking

Rondinara Beach

Rondinara beach is located in a bay with calm and beautiful water. Again, this beach is very busy … so much so that we turned around when we saw the people and the crowded parking lot around 4pm. Official beach parking will cost you € 7.

Free parking Rondinara : go here .

Rondinara beach

Pinarello Beach

Even near Porto-Vecchio it is possible to find quiet and unspoiled places. To do this, all you have to do is go to Pinarello and explore its bay, which belongs to the coastal conservatory. It takes about 20 minutes from the center of Porto-Vecchio and the activity can be found here .

Where to eat in Porto Vecchio ?

Here are some good restaurant addresses in and around Porto Vecchio :

  • The U Santa Marina, A Festa and Le Fort restaurants, located near Santa Giulia beach, enjoy a magnificent setting with a sea view. We tested the last two, they are good value for money.
  • Overlooking Palombaggia beach, the Italian restaurant Costa Marina is an institution. The view is amazing !
  • On the port of Porto Vecchio, Casa Corsa offers delicious dishes based on Corsican specialties.
  • If you want to eat on Palombaggia beach, the Da Mare by Sea Lounge hut serves very good food and its decoration is stunning. Be careful, the prices go with the beauty of the setting.

BONUS : Visit the Corsican countryside (Zonza)

What we liked the most during our road trip in Corsica was the diversity of the landscapes! A few minutes from the beaches, you can find yourself in the heart of the mountains with freshness.

On the return trip to Ajaccio airport from Porto-Vecchio, we decided to go inland. The roads are winding and the landscapes evolve from turn to turn. We take full eyes! Here are the few stops we made on the way:

Ospedale lake

By chance, we discovered this pretty lake just below Zonza. It’s a really peaceful spot, and you can feel the fresh mountain air.

For thrill-seekers: take an adventure on the Via Ferrata de l’Ospedale . It’s a fun and challenging route that overlooks all the gulfs of Porto Vecchio and offers 360° panoramic views from Lake Ospedale to Sardinia.

what to do in southern Corsica

Piscia di Ghjaddu Waterfall

A nice walk to do in 1h30 round trip to see the waterfall of Piscia di Ghjaddu. The end of the route is a bit steep, but the walk is relatively easy. A hot spring with a small waterfall is 10 minutes from the start. See the route on VisoRando

This pretty village, perched in the middle of the mountains, is located an hour’s drive from Porto-Vecchio. We strongly recommend that you stop for lunch at the Eternisula restaurant . This is one of the best restaurants we have tried. The setting is cute, the service at the top, the menu is well prepared with delicious fresh products. Different small dishes are available, take several to share. The value for money is very good, it changes the huts on the beaches of Porto-Vecchio.

To digest, take a stroll in Zonza !

what to do in Zonza

Col of Bavella

10 minutes by car from Zonza is the Col de Bavella (1218m). The spot is ideal for having a beautiful view of the needles of the same name and the neighboring massifs. It is also the starting point for many walks and hikes for young and old.

Where to sleep in Zonza ?

For those who wish to stay a night in Zonza to enjoy the Corsican mountains, you can sleep in this accommodation which has a swimming pool and jacuzzi with views of the mountains. Excellent value!

6 Corsica vacation tips to know before you go

5 Corsica vacation tips

Hi, it’s me. I’m currently on vacation in Corsica and hope you’re enjoying my guest posts! I thought I’d pop in today with a post on Corsica vacation tips in case you’re planning  a trip. Haven’t even been here a week yet and already love it, so more to come about that.

Thinking of going to Corsica on vacation? If you ever get the opportunity, you should absolutely go! The Mediterranean island off the southeastern coast of France is truly beautiful and looks exactly like the pictures. Family trips, couples, friends and even solo travelers will have a fabulous vacation and I can’t say enough about how fun it is here. I’ll be writing more posts about my vacation once I return home, so stay tuned for those.

Here are 6 tips for your Corsica vacation to know before you go!

Corsica vacation tips.

The following tips for your Corsica vacation are based on my family vacation experience in southern Corsica. I can’t speak to the northern part of the island since I haven’t been there.

So, here are my 6 Corsica vacation tips

corsica vacation tips hiking

1. Be prepared for changing weather conditions and pack appropriately.

It might be in the 80s sitting in the sun at the beach in your swimsuit but if you drive an hour up the mountain and go hiking, the temperature can be much cooler especially when the sun disappears, so dress in layers and bring a jacket. It was barely 50 F although it was 80 F at the foot of the mountain. Even though it’s summer, the temperature differences can catch you by surprise depending on where you are — so come prepared!

2. Avoid in July and August.

From crowded tourist attractions and restaurants to even the supermarkets, Corsica can get extremely busy during the summer. If you want a more relaxed experience, steer clear of the island at peak times and come in April or September. We’re here now and it’s comfortable. Supermarkets are still nuts but we’ve had no issues booking excursions or eating out.

3. Have cash because many places don’t accept cards.

Many businesses in Corsica do not accept credit cards of any kind and have signs that say cash only. We were also told this on the phone when booking restaurant reservations and tours. So make sure you have enough cash to cover any extras while on the island. In grocery stores, credit cards are of course accepted (with chips only though) but for a fair share of restaurants and tourist attractions, it’s cash only.

4. Renting a car is mandatory. And if you’re a nervous driver, think twice.

If you want to get the most out of your trip and explore a bit, it’s essential that you rent a car. The windy, narrow roads will take you up mountains, along the coast and into town. The roads are all nicely paved and well marked but not all roads have guardrails and are narrower than most roads in the USA. So if you’re a nervous driver or not comfortable driving manual up and down windy hills (without streetlights at night), you may want to bring a travel partner who is. You will see a fair amount of hitchhikers and people who stay at their resort but the fun of the island, at least for us, is to get out and do things!

corsica vacation beaches

5. Allow extra time to get places.

Although a place may only be a few kilometers away, they take a while to get to. The roads in Corsica are not fast-moving autoroutes that will get you from A to B in a straight shot. You often have to wind around and go up and down to get somewhere and the speed limits are not fast. So a simple drive that looks like it’s 20 kilometers on the map may take an hour or more. You also need extra time to allow for photo ops and little stops along the way. I love regional product stores so be prepared to get sidetracked. When it doubt, leave early!

6. If you’re thinking of getting a GoPro, do it!

If you’re debating a GoPro action camera purchase, go for it and get familiar with its features before you arrive. Regular cameras can be too big to safely use when canyoning and on a boat. But even if you’re not an adventure junkie, a GoPro Hero4 Silver  will majorly come in handy on a Corsica vacation. Even just documenting the windy roads and hikes are that much cooler when you have video to show for it! And if you have no use for it once you return home? Sell it! They hold their value pretty well.

See you soon with much more about Corsica!

Yup, that’s a great way to exercise and see everything. We saw a bunch of bikers although some of the mountain rounds probably aren’t suited for biking unless you have a motorcycle. Crazy hills and no shoulder!

Some useful tips here Diane, especially about the windy roads taking a long time with photo stops and food stops and general scenic slowness. One time in Corsica we got held up by semi wild pigs blocking the road! I’m so tempted to get a GroPro, I know I’d have so much fun with one. Thanks for linking up again.

Thank you! And I believe it about the wild pigs! I love that many areas of the island aren’t overdeveloped and catered to tourists. Thank you for hosting!

Early morning in #istanbul when the streets are still calm. Something that caught us by surprise was the fact that cars and scooters really don’t slow down much for pedestrians and they get really close to you when they pass. Definitely use the sidewalk whenever you can! Lots of fun shops and cafes here near the Galata Tower where we’re staying.

An insider's guide to the best places in Corsica

By Charlotte Davey

Corsica

WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CORSICA?

‘This is where my roots are. My grandmother was born here and a lot of my family still lives in Venaco , a village in the mountains. My grandmother was one of seven, and one of her siblings had 10 children, so there are many cousins! Each family has their own house, with gardens full of vegetables. You see goats crossing the road. It’s authentic – a very social, simple place, where nothing is artificial and everything is in harmony with nature. Something speaks to me about this way of life. I feel most myself here.’

Mathilde Laurent

WHAT’S YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY OF THE ISLAND?

‘Stepping off the plane – I must have been about three years old. The airport then was just a strip in a field, so we landed straight in the heart of Corsica, right among the trees. What I remember most are the smells: the air was filled with them. It’s very different from the rest of France , there are plants that can only be found here: types of chamomile and orchid; wild eucalyptus, juniper, laurel, rosemary, sage and lavender. It’s such an evocative place for olfactory memory.’

WHERE DO YOU STAY?

‘I usually connect with my family in Venaco – I have my own home here and I can just open the front door and see my cousins – but I like to travel around and visit different spots, too. One of my favourites is L’Ile-Rousse on the north coast, with its pretty white beaches and cobbled streets. Villa Joséphine is a small boutique hotel set in the hills and Hôtel Minera , just outside of town, has stunning views across the sea. Both are quiet and completely immersed in nature, so I can just rest.’

Villa Josphine hotel in LIleRousse

MOST INTERESTING SPOT FOR A CULTURE FIX?

‘The Citadelle in Corte , with its 15th-century castle and barracks – it’s breathtaking because it’s so high up, sitting on a steep rock overlooking the town. It was built under Spanish rule and serves as an interesting reminder of the island’s political history. There’s also a wonderful museum that traces the traditions of Corsica, from arts and crafts to anthropology.’

WHAT WOULD YOUR IDEAL DAY INCLUDE?

‘I’d spend it by a river, going swimming and having a picnic. There are lots of rivers all over Corsica; I often head to the Vecchio with my family and sit by the Pont de Noceta bridge in Venaco. It’s tranquil and beautiful, and you can go for ages without thinking about the time – you just watch the light changing as the sun moves through the sky.’

Restaurant terrace at Hôtel Minera

WHERE ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PLACES TO EAT?

‘I like really fresh, healthy food. Corsican cooking is Mediterranean, with influences from Italy and France, and lots of regional dishes. I love beignets de poireaux , a leek pastry that’s similar to a doughnut. My grandmother used to make them but I can never get the recipe quite right, so I order them at U Campanile , a hotel and restaurant in the Vivario district, a little south of Venaco. It has incredible cannelloni. I prefer restaurants in the mountains to those by the sea – you get the best cheeses, such as brocciu, made with goat’s milk, and aromatic herbs and spices. The Ferme-Auberge de Campo di Monte , an old stone farmhouse in the countryside around Murato, is an exceptional showcase of local food including ham, cheese and savoury pastries with fresh tomato and wild herbs. I remember my aunt picking wild mint and oregano on the hillside – she knew exactly what she was looking for – then cooking them with vegetables and serving them on pastry with olive oil. A very simple dish, but all you need.’

ANY OTHER STOPS FOR A BITE?

‘ Patisserie Casanova , a bakery and pastry shop owned by my good friend Edmond Casanova, is great for snacks. It’s in a historic building on the main street in the town of Corte , in the middle of the island. Edmond makes ice cream from fresh fruit, which is always a hit with my daughters. Another must-try pudding is falculelle – little cakes made with cheese that are simply delicious.’

BEST PLACE FOR A DRINK?

‘It has to be Bar de la Place in Venaco. It’s busy at any time of day and the centre of village life. People come here for a coffee in the morning or have a drink and a pizza in the evening. In Corte, I have a virgin Mojito with fresh mint and lime at bar Le Rex , which is also amazing for tapas.’

THE LOVELIEST STORES YOU HAVE DISCOVERED?

‘I’m very fond of Corsican products – I try to shop locally when I’m here. There’s IMIZA , a fantastic beauty brand with a store in Bastia , the port town on the northern peninsula. The oils are made with immortelle, a flower that soothes the skin and is especially good for after-sun rehydration. I’m also a fan of Casanera , an organic cosmetics company that works with plants found in the maquis, a shrubland of aromatic herbs that’s unique to the Mediterranean. There are many small markets around, with stalls selling various toiletries made from natural ingredients, where I pick up organic soap with patchouli. And I buy Kyrnella face cream, which you can only get in Corsican pharmacies.’

IS THIS WHERE YOU WERE FIRST INSPIRED TO MAKE PERFUME?

‘Corsica is definitely the place that awakened me to fragrance, where I discovered its pleasure. In every one of my scents I have kept that purity found in plants and flowers. Untouched nature – strong, rough, immediate – is something that is always there in my work.’

NORTH OR SOUTH CORSICA – WHICH IS BETTER?

Corsica is divided into two areas, north and south, representing departments- Haute-Corse and Corse de Sud. Both regions are equally captivating although they manifest their unique characteristics.

The North is wilder and less explored, revealing dramatic scenery and remote beaches. Peppered with charming fishing villages and home to Roman chapels and churches, it grants an authentic Corsican experience. The main towns include Bastia , Ile Rousse , and Calvi while the principal natural landmarks encompass Desert des Agriates with its sublime beaches, Cap Corse , Scandola Nature Reserve , and Calanches de Piana . Inland, in the vicinity of the historic town of Corte , two mesmerizing valleys, Restonica and Asco , seduce visitors with their ravishing beauty.

It is the south of Corsica, however, that is more popular with travellers. With its exotic white-sand beaches, famous historic towns, and mesmerizing mountains it offers a quintessentially Mediterranean getaway. Lovers of watersports and sun-worshippers will appreciate the never-ending succession of turquoise-water bays indenting the shoreline. The area of Porto Vecchio has some of the best beaches in Europe with the fabulous Plage de Palombaggia claiming the crown. Bonifacio , the famous clifftop fortress is a fascinating town from where boat tour companies operate scenic excursions to Iles Lavezzi . Ajaccio and Sartène complete the list of must-visit cities on the South Corsica bucket list. Once tired of coastal pleasures, visitors may explore the magical world of the Bavella massif where cascading torrents promise a welcome respite.

Beach lovers, families with children, and first-time travellers will enjoy the attractions of southern Corsica whereas hikers and nature lovers looking for an outdoor adventure will undoubtedly succumb to the charms of the north.

Enjoy a scenic drive around the wild Cap Corse peninsula in north Corsica.

HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED IN CORSICA?

Due to the unmatched variety of tourist attractions available on the island, it is virtually impossible to see all of Corsica’s highlights during just one visit.

If you plan to see the flagship landmarks in both departments , the north and the south, allow at least 10-14 days to tour the chosen places of interest.

A shorter, 7-day visit will enable you to explore a large region of Corsica with enough time to rest and relax.

Cruise ship passengers and day visitors arriving from Sardinia with a limited time frame also have interesting options to make good use of their time on the Island of Beauty with port town regions providing plenty to do and see.

With 2 weeks in Corsica , you have time to discover splendid landscapes in different corners of the island: charming villages, dreamy beaches, impressive mountains, breathtaking cliffs and historical citadels. Here is our ideal itinerary with the best of Corsica in 14 days in the north and south. Our tour allows you to plan everything with map, photos , places to see, where to sleep…

itinerary 2 weeks Corsica 14 days road trip circuit

This guide is completely independent , based on our experiences. We visited the area anonymously, making our own choices and paying all our bills in full.

2 weeks in Corsica: general advice

Is it possible to visit corsica in 14 days.

With 14 days, you have time to explore a large part of Corsica, with a bit of each region: the southern beaches, the mountains, the unique sites of Piana and Bonifacio, the villages of the Balagne, the cities of Bastia and Ajaccio.

But of course, you have to do it in road trip mode, because the island is quite big. This article is for those who want to see as much as possible during their trip.

  • How to get to Corsica

Map how to get to Corsica

The itinerary below starts in Bastia . But it’s a loop. You can therefore start it at any city of arrival on the island.

Corsica is accessible by ferry from several cities in France and Italy. But be careful, ferry crossings are quite long, and for a trip of only 10 days, the interest of the ferry depends on your point of departure.

See available ferry schedules and book.

Otherwise, there are 4 airports where you can arrive in Corsica: Bastia, Calvi, Ajaccio, Figari. You can locate them all on the map below. Compare the destinations and flights available from your departure city .

How to get around

road in Corsica with goats

It is possible to explore certain regions without a car: There are guided tours that can take you to the most famous places: villages, desert, islands… But this limits you enormously. There is a lot to see! We really think that renting/renting a car is the best way to discover the island. See our tips for driving in Corsica .

Beware, in the middle of summer, the parking lots fill up completely, so it’s better to start your day early to enjoy it more.

OUR TIPS FOR RENTING A CAR IN Corsica

  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • Choose a car that is powerful enough (the roads are steep) but compact (some passages are narrow).
  • Think of the complete insurance (some roads are tortuous and narrow).
  • There is a lot of demand, book it early .

Day 1 – Tour of Cap Corse

Driving time = 3h30

Erbalunga

The main excursion is of course the tour of the Cap Corsea wild region with only a few villages and impressive mountains plunging into the sea.

With only one day, you must limit your visits. But we recommend that you stop at all the viewpoints along the way.

Cap Corse - black beach

Erbalunga , Port Centuri and Nonza are worth a visit. And it is the only place to find black beaches in Corsica. However, the color is not due to volcanic ash (as in other countries) but to an old abandoned asbestos mine on the coast. It is a wild jewel not to be missed!

Spend a night in the North of the Cap Corse. We recommend you:

  • Le Tomino – see prices, pictures and availability
  • or see the available accommodations

Spend the night in Saint-Florent by the sea, or in Patrimonio next door in the vineyards (Night 1/2). We recommend you:

  • Hotel in downtown – good value for money The Flor Hotel is centrally located, but be aware that it does not have a large enough parking lot for all guests! see pictures and availability
  • Hotel Tetolla Ideal to see the sunsets see pictures and availability
  • In the vineyards At the Lustincone Inn in Patrimonio we loved the charm of the rooms, the delicious breakfast and the fantastic views from the terrace and pool! see photos and availability
  • Store, in the mountains Hotel Dimora is located in the mountains above St. Florent, for peace, tranquility and beautiful views. See photos and availability

Day 2 – Saint-Florent and the Agriates desert

Travel time = 0

City of Saint-Florent

Today enjoy the bay of Saint-Florent to the west. Start by taking the boat to the Lotu beach and the Agriates desert. Either you enjoy the beach with the beautiful views of the mountains of Cap Corseor you can walk to discover the beach of Saleccia (1h walk in one direction). The place is magical and the views from the boat are superb. The Agriates desert is one of our favorite places in Corsica .

Beach of Saleccia

And on your return, explore the town of Saint-Florent with its citadel, its ice merchants and its marina. Admire the views of the bay with the mountains of Cap Corse.

Spend the night in Saint-Florent by the sea, or in Patrimonio next door in the vineyards. Night 2/2.

Day 3 – L’Île-Rousse

Driving time = 1h30

Today you drive south. Take the road to the Balagne. Enjoy a stop at the Ostriconi beach, one of our favorite sights in Corsica (and one of our favorite beaches , for that matter).

Beach of Ostriconi

Make a stop at the park of Saleccia, to discover the wonderful garden and plants of Corsica.

Finish the day in L’Île-Rousse. It was founded by the most famous leader of the Corsican people Pasquale Paoli in 1758 (although the place has been inhabited since antiquity). He wanted a port that was not controlled by the Genoese. The main thing to do in Ile-Rousse is to enjoy the island walk to the top of the lighthouse. See our guide to visit Ile-Rousse .

L'Île-Rousse

Overnight in L’Île-Rousse – don’t miss the sunset!

We recommend:

  • Quietly located in the heart of the city, the Rocabella Hotel is ideal for relaxation. see prices, pictures and availability
  • Just steps away from the beach, Hotel Liberata & Spa offers a colorful and fun, yet cozy experience. see prices, pictures and availability
  • For a good value, the Casa Rossa hotel, a little further from the center, is an excellent option. see prices, pictures and availability

Where to see the best rated accommodations in L’Île-Rousse

Day 4 – The villages of Balagne

Go up into the hills of the Balagne, to discover several typical villages of the region.

Village of Pigna

For example, we recommend:

  • Pigna and its blue shutters (35min drive from Calvi)
  • Sant’Antonino , one of the oldest villages in Corsica (30min drive from Calvi)
  • Speloncato , less touristic, with its houses surrounded by rocks (50min drive from Calvi)

Village of Speluncato

And finish the day in Calvi (Night 1/2). We recommend:

  • Around the port Casa Bianca hotel with its modern decor and beautiful views – see pictures and availability
  • Along the beach Hotel Onda where you will sleep almost with your feet in the water… See prices, pictures and availability
  • On the heights a dreamy and luxurious stay in the hotel La Villa Calvi. See prices, pictures and availability

  • the beach of Bodri with its very fine white sand
  • Punta di Spanu , one of our favorite places in the region, with its rocks, its Genoese tower and its view on the bay of Calvi

Citadel of Calvi

Then in Calvi, start by admiring the citadel from the beach! Then go explore it.

Inside, you will discover a labyrinth of alleys, stairs, fortifications, and beautiful views in all directions. Among the monuments note:

  • the church of St. John the Baptist
  • the oratory of Saint-Antoine.
  • MUDACC – the art museum of the citadel of Calvi with works of the Contemporary Art Fund

See our article dedicated to the citadel or our complete guide to Calvi .

Night in Calvi (2/2)

Day 6 – calanques de Piana and Scandola Reserve

Driving time = 2h

Today, continue your descent along the West Coast. We are going to one of the most famous places in Corsica!

calanques de Piana

With the calanques de Piana the Scandola nature reserve is a Unesco World Heritage Site. It is protected and access is limited. The cliffs and their geological formations are unique. The boat tours allow you to get up close and personal. The cliffs and colored rock formations are exceptional. Attention, reserve your place on the boat!

Village of Piana

Night in Piana. We recommend 2 options:

Sleep in the village of Piana, in the heart of the Calanques on a higher ground. Many hotels have incredible views of the Gulf. For example the Scandola hotel – see prices, pictures and availability

Sleep in Porto Ota, the village located in the center of the gulf. It is convenient for boat tours. For example, at the Residence Hoteliere Capu Seninu with its breathtaking views. – see prices, pictures and availability

Day 7 – Ajaccio

Driving time= 1h30

Take time to explore the old town, walk around the fort, see the market and visit the churches. In terms of visits, we recommend

Day 10 – Bonifacio and Cape Pertusato

View on the marina of Bonifacio

Today take the time to discover all the facets of one of the most beautiful cities of Corsica: Bonifacio. The citadel was built on a small peninsula with cliffs over 70m high. Among our favorite activities:

It is absolutely beautiful and a radical change from the beaches.

Then go back down to the coast, through the gorge of Solenzara. Here, enjoy the views of the river and mountains or find a spot to swim in one of the natural pools.

When to Visit Corsica

Corsica has a pleasant climate and various attractions to offer throughout the year. The best time to visit Corsica depends on your preferences and interests:

  • Summer (June to August): This is the peak tourist season when Corsica experiences warm and sunny weather. It’s ideal for beach days and hiking. However, be prepared for larger crowds and higher accommodation prices.
  • Spring (April to May) and Autumn (September to October): These are excellent shoulder seasons to visit Corsica. The weather is still pleasant, and you can enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and sightseeing without the scorching heat and excessive crowds.
  • Winter (November to March): While winters are milder compared to some northern regions, Corsica experiences more rain and cooler temperatures during this period. Some parts of the island, especially the mountains, might get snow, making it suitable for winter sports.

If you want to enjoy the island’s beaches and warm weather, visit during the summer. If you prefer fewer crowds and moderate weather for outdoor activities, consider visiting in spring or autumn. For a more budget-friendly trip, the shoulder seasons might be better, as accommodation and travel expenses tend to be lower than during peak summer months.
