And so we landed right back to the GPO. You might wonder why, after the last time where I shared the exclusive tour and my address to the postmen, was I back within weeks? Reading my last article right here, some of the Consul Generals and expats deputed to Mumbai requested me to arrange a visit to this imposing landmark in our city. It was especially fascinating to see the joy the foreigners derived in touring the minutiae of the Indo-Saracenic architecture by Scottish Architect John Begg in 1913. There was Israel Consul General Kobbi Shoshani, Polish Consul General Alexander Dańda and his wife Dorota, UK high Commissioner's wife Kam, Thai Consul General Donnawitt and cultural attaché Nuanprae and Jesus from Panama.

But this time, apart from showing the consuls the historic edifice, what intrigued us all was the role of the postal system in augmenting and facilitating payments. A few dedicated postwoman explained in detail to us they are enabled to provide cash withdrawals from our bank accounts like an ATM at our very doorsteps no less. This service makes it very convenient for anyone needing cash at home. I found the postmen and postwomen so very gracious and involved as they guided us to one of India’s first RCC domes which is also undergoing a restoration.

Communication lessons

Speaking of manners, I gave a talk on communication skills and tricks of being a great conversationalist in social settings - to the women’s group called Women On Mission’ – convened and founded by Suman Kothari with ladies of all ages. I found them all so responsive and interested in every word I shared and they asked so many intelligent questions that the session turned into an invigorating interaction of near five hundred eager participants for two and a half hours. I see a great metamorphosis in conventional and a more conservative section of society in their sixties and seventies working on self-improvement, growth and being better informed, which is commendable.

Sisley’s exclusive little party by my friend Kadambari Lakhani, director at Baccarose, to showcase Le Eaux Rêveés to a select few at ‘All Saints’ was a delightful champagne sundowner. While I tucked in to monsoon salads and petit hors d'œuvres I noticed close friend Ojas Rajani busily pirouetting for pictures and videos of herself — such a ‘thing’ these days!

Ex editor of ex magazine Hi Blitz, Shalini Sharma who had flown in from Hyderabad was super excited to catch up with old friends. Sue Lewis, head of brand, Sisley had also come down to unveil this seductive monsoon fragrance.

Monsoon lunch

Mumbai has been waiting with bated breath for the rains that have been slow in making an appearance, and I’m hoping I don’t speak too soon but seems like the rains are finally here to stay? This called for a celebration! So I hosted a tiny lunch to celebrate my friend Pooja Nankani’s birthday at a special restaurant and had some favourite friends over to cut a cake, enjoy a delectable lunch of soft shell crabs and Thai curries and share some treasured moments of conversations.

Zarine Khan always speaks of the joys of more close knit meetings and this was indeed languorous and joyous while this welcome rain pitter pattered outside. Mumbai: A Vistara flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Mumbai faced a bomb scare on Friday noon, triggering a thorough search of the aircraft that later confirmed it was a hoax.

Sources reported that a tissue paper with a bomb threat message was found onboard the aircraft, prompting immediate action by Mumbai authorities.

A Vistara spokesperson said, “We confirm a security concern was noted onboard Vistara flight UK 552 from Thiruvananthapuram to Mumbai on June 28, 2024. Following protocol, authorities were alerted and the aircraft was taken to an isolation bay upon landing safely at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai. All passengers were disembarked without incident.”

This incident marks the fifth bomb scare in recent weeks in Mumbai. On June 18, an IndiGo flight from Chennai to Mumbai landed under emergency conditions due to a similar threat received by the airline’s call centre in Delhi. Earlier on June 3, an Akasa Air flight bound for Mumbai was diverted to Ahmedabad following a bomb threat on the Delhi-Mumbai sector. These incidents follow a pattern of heightened security alerts affecting flights into Mumbai, including a bomb threat received by Vistara UK 024 on the Paris-Mumbai route on June 2, and an emergency landing of an IndiGo flight from Chennai on June 1.

Strengthening links through inaugural UCL India Summer School

UCL connected with Indian students, alumni and partners during a week of activities including the launch of our first ever India Summer School.

From 10-14 June, Indian pre-university students got a taste of what it's like to study at a world-leading UK university during the inaugural UCL India Summer School. Based at the cutting-edge campus of The British School New Delhi, leading UCL professors ran research-led teaching sessions for small groups of prospective students from across the country on a range of interdisciplinary topics.

The same week, more than 100 members of UCL’s alumni community came together at receptions in Mumbai and New Delhi, renewing relationships, growing their networks and sharing ideas for UCL’s upcoming bicentennial celebrations.

UCL Senior Leadership Professor Geraint Rees (Vice-Provost, Research, Innovation & Global Engagement) and Kirsty Walker (Vice-President, External Engagement) also connected with longstanding partners and supporters, including the British High Commissioner to India.

Celebrating the Summer School

At the Summer School, study pathways on a range of topics were delivered by Dr Michael Collins (UCL History), Professor Priti Parikh (UCL Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment), Professor Daniel Richardson (UCL Brain Sciences), Professor John Hurst (UCL Medical Sciences), Dr Tim Beasley-Murray (UCL Arts & Humanities), Dr Manzur Rashid and Nidhi Chaudhary (both UCL Engineering). These included:

• Psychology and the Human Brain
• Medical Sciences and Artificial Intelligence
• Creative and Cultural Industries
• Management, Business and Law
• Climate Change and Cities of the Future
• Public Policy in Science, Engineering and Technology 

UCL alumni Anika Dhawan, Akshat Khandelwal and Mandeep Singh chatted to participants about their experiences of studying in London, applying to universities and forging careers after graduation. Current undergraduates also took part, including third year student Adya Chetiya from Delhi, who live-streamed from UCL’s Bloomsbury campus for a virtual tour and Q&A.

Alison Barrett MBE, Country Director for the British Council in India, and Vishu Sharma, Senior Project Manager - Higher Education, British Council also addressed the students as part of the programme. At the end of the week, participants enjoyed a high tea and certificate presentation with Professor Geraint Rees and Kirsty Walker.

Dr Michael Collins, who oversaw development and delivery of the Summer School, said: "India is a remarkable country. It was an absolute privilege to work on the Summer School curriculum design and planning, and then lead the teaching team in Delhi, seeing the whole thing come to life. As is so often the case, it was the people that made the difference: UCL leaders' willingness to explore new ideas, inspirational UCL professors, unyielding energy from the Indian students, and a consummately professional local partner in the form of The British School New Delhi."

Kirsty Walker, Vice-President (External Engagement) said: "UCL has a fantastic global community of staff, alumni and students and we were delighted to give pre-university students from across India a taste of what it's like to study with us this week. I hope to welcome many on campus soon."

Reconnecting with alumni and partners

Senior leadership enjoyed meetings with Indian partners, including the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore to discuss plans to support India’s healthcare sector, focusing on medical technology, big data, and clinician-scientist training.

In New Delhi, Kirsty Walker and Geraint Rees met with the British High Commissioner to India, Lindy Cameron; First Secretary Science and Deputy Head of the India Science Tech and Innovation Network, Jack Landers; and Country Director for the British Council in India, Alison Barrett MBE. They explored opportunities for future collaboration, underscoring the mutual commitment to enhancing educational and research ties between the UK and India. 

At the alumni receptions, guests heard speeches from Professor Geraint Rees, Kirsty Walker and Dr Michael Collins, who spoke about his research into Indo-British relations and UCL’s relationship with the country.

The Summer School marks UCL's ongoing commitment to collaborating with India. Later this year, the first recipients of the UCL India Excellence Scholarships will arrive on campus. The scheme aims to support Indian students with an outstanding academic record to pursue full-time Master's degree studies at UCL.   UCL has a thriving community of nearly 1,000 Indian students and more than 3,000 alumni in India. Udit Singhal, an alum of both UCL and The British School New Delhi, was recently featured on Forbes India’s 30 Under 30 list, recognised for pioneering an innovative and environmentally friendly technology that converts used glass bottles into sand through his company Glass2Sand.
