From lightweight and compact options ideal for keeping in a bag at all times to larger umbrellas that can cover both you and your travel partner, we've rounded up the best umbrellas to suit every traveler's needs.

Our Travel + Leisure team tested 18 travel umbrellas to assess ease of use, protection, durability, portability, and value. (Read more about our comprehensive testing process below). We will continue testing our picks for six more months to ensure each option’s reliability and durability, and we will update this article if anything should change. Scroll down below to find your next travel umbrella guaranteed to make sure you never get caught in the rain.

Best Overallf

Weatherman travel umbrella.

We were impressed by this umbrella’s performance and sturdiness.

The price tag is worth it — but not if you’re prone to losing umbrellas.

There’s nothing quite as humbling as an umbrella that flips inside out at the slight whisper of wind, leaving you awkwardly trying to flip it back as you stand in the rain, but this Weatherman umbrella proved its worth during testing. Our team member took this product out during an intense storm in San Francisco akin to a hurricane complete with “purple winds,” and this umbrella stepped up to the challenge like a true hero. It made it through strong winds and rough handling like a champ without popping inside out. Our tester reported back, “It felt like the wind was going to pick me off the ground and the umbrella survived that!”

It also dried quickly and showed no signs of wear. The grip was comfortable, and the umbrella provided ample protection from the rain. Weighing under a pound and just shy of a foot long when unopened, it’s the perfect size to throw into a bag or backpack without feeling like it’s even there. The color options are impressive with 11 styles to choose from, ranging from classic black to fluorescent pink. When it comes to weathering storms with style and reliability, this umbrella takes the cake, leaving flimsy alternatives in the dust. It’s a worthwhile investment, but if you’re notorious for misplacing umbrellas, then you may want to think twice — or at least be extra careful.

Best Compact

Davek mini umbrella.

This is the smallest, most lightweight option on our list.

This umbrella is not suitable for more than one person.

Compact and lightweight, the Davek Mini Umbrella is the perfect choice to bring anywhere with you as an “emergency” umbrella, slipping effortlessly into coat pockets or fanny packs without weighing you down. We were impressed that this option is only seven inches long when not in use (for reference, that’s as tall as an iPhone 13 Pro Max). Despite its smaller size, its robust mechanics, sturdiness, quality, and forecasted longevity make it a worthy investment at $60.  Plus, with a range of 10 vibrant colors to choose from, it adds a touch of fun to rainy days. This umbrella is perfect for solo strolls but not ideal for sharing with a friend — unless you're comfortable with a little cozy closeness.

Best for Two People

Shedrain jumbo compact umbrella.

This umbrella provides more than ample coverage for two people.

We wish the handle was longer, although that’s not a deal breaker.

Bigger isn’t always better, but in this case, it might very well be. Despite its jumbo size, this umbrella is easy to handle and comfortably fits two individuals. With a spacious canopy and sturdy construction, it's a reliable shield against the elements, even boasting windproof capabilities up to 75 mph. It is on the longer side at 15 inches when closed, but it’s still compact enough to fit in a small carry-on suitcase . We love that it comes with a rubber wristlet so you can easily throw it on your wrist or hook it onto the outside of your bag when not in use. Bonus points: it only takes this umbrella about 10 minutes to fully air dry.

Best Quick-Dry

Totes titan umbrella.

Overall, we recommend this umbrella for its portability, durability, and ease of use, in addition to standing out as a top choice for water repellency and fast drying.

We would suggest improving the closing mechanics for a smoother operation.

Say goodbye to leaving your soaking wet umbrella out to dry overnight. The standout feature of this umbrella is how quick it dries after use, only needing minutes to fully dry. Despite facing moderate rain and strong winds of 25-28 mph, this umbrella held its ground admirably. Its one-handed, button-operated opening proved to be smooth, though closing required a bit more force. With a generous 43-inch canopy, it provided ample coverage for one person. The sturdy frame and solid mechanics withstood the wind during testing, offering a secure grip with its textured handle. Compact and lightweight at just 11 inches when folded, it's easily portable for on-the-go use.

Most Affordable

Sy compact travel umbrella.

For how compact it is, we were impressed at how wide the canopy was when open, providing great coverage from getting wet.

Minor improvements could include enlarging the closure loop for easier fastening.

If you’re searching for affordability, durability, and style, then look no further. As the most budget-friendly option on this list, this umbrella impressed with its user-friendly design and effectiveness in repelling water. Its easy one-button opening and closing mechanism, though requiring a bit of muscle to fully close, was easy to operate. The comfortable handle added to its appeal, enhancing grip and comfort. Portable and lightweight, it easily fits into various bags without adding bulk. There are multiple colors and prints to choose from, providing an option for every taste.

The Details: 10.8 inches (closed) | 37.5-inch diameter (open) | 12.2 ounces | Aluminum frame | Auto-open

Best Inverted Design

Siepasa inverted reverse upside down umbrella.

This umbrella is lightweight, sturdy, and reliable when it’s windy.

Given the inverted design, it is too large to fit into an average backpack, tote, or carry-on suitcase.

There are a whopping 44 design options to choose from with this stylish umbrella, featuring a solid color, print, or pattern on the inside of the canopy. We thought it was too large to carry in most day-to-day bags, but it would make a great option to keep in a car. In fact, its inverted design makes it especially easy to close when entering a car, while the button-operated opening mechanism provides smooth and hassle-free operation.

It does also offer hands-free carrying options, such as an oval handle for convenient wrist or bag strap attachment. Some users may find the smooth plastic handle difficult to grip for extended periods. However, the umbrella's ability to stand on its own was a standout feature, adding convenience when setting it down. Despite its lightweight and slim profile, it offered ample coverage for one or even two people, with sturdy construction that held up well against gusts of wind during testing. For what you pay, you get a lightweight, incredibly sturdy umbrella that is easy to use and reliable in the wind.

Most Stylish

Gustbuster automatic umbrella.

You can add a custom metal engraving on The Metro’s hardwood handle for a stylish detail.

This umbrella is better suited to fit in a backpack or tote than a smaller purse or pocket.

Have you ever considered adding a personal touch to your umbrella? Well, now you can with the option to engrave on this Gustbuster option. While it is considered a splurge, the ability to customize your umbrella adds a unique flair to an everyday item and also makes a great gift option. We love this umbrella for its ease of use and impressive water repellency. With a simple button operation and secure Velcro closure, it offers convenience and security, although its slightly larger size may make it bulkier to carry compared to smaller travel-size umbrellas. Despite its larger dimensions, it provides ample coverage for one person and possibly two, thanks to its durable construction and sturdy materials.

The Details: 16 inches (closed) | 43-inch diameter (open) | 1.1 pounds | Alloy steel frame | Auto-open

Best Prints

Shedrain compact umbrella.

Lightweight and compact, it fits easily into various bags, making it a versatile choice.

This umbrella is best for one person.

Pick up this ShedRain umbrella if you want to brighten up a sad, rainy day. This travel umbrella comes in a variety of punchy prints, from colorful florals to bold patterns. In terms of performance, the umbrella excelled in repelling rainwater, offering sufficient coverage for one adult and possibly two, although they would need to be close together. While not tested in extremely windy conditions, it still proved sturdy and durable, drying off quickly after we used it, with no signs of wear. Lightweight and compact, it fits easily into various bags, making it versatile for different situations. Priced at under $20, we’d say it’s an affordable option to add to your inventory of travel accessories.

EEZ-Y Compact Travel Umbrella

This umbrella offers excellent value for its quality and design, outperforming some more expensive brands.

While the umbrella's compact size is convenient for portability, it does not provide sufficient coverage for multiple people during heavy rainfall.

Four words: ballin’ on a budget. With its simple yet functional build and impressive performance compared to pricier alternatives, this travel umbrella earned our praise and recommendation as a budget-friendly, reliable choice for rainy days. Its automatic push-button opening mechanism, ergonomic handle, and compact size made it easy and comfortable to use during testing. Despite its small size when closed, it provides surprisingly ample coverage when open, suitable for one person. The umbrella's quality surpasses typical travel-size umbrellas, with sturdy construction and wind-resistant design. We found that it effectively repelled water and dried quickly after use, maintaining its functionality and appearance after we used it during light rainstorms. Highly portable and lightweight, it fits easily into various bags without taking up much space.

The Details: 11 inches (closed) | 42-inch diameter (open) | 14.4 ounces | Fiberglass frame | Auto-open

Best for Sun Protection

Sport-brella versa-brella.

This umbrella’s best feature is its versatility, making it a highly adaptable option for providing shade in various outdoor settings.

It's a clamp-on model, so it's not intended to be used as a handheld umbrella.

Did somebody say beach day? This umbrella is best to take on the go to the beach, pool, park, or anywhere you think you’ll need some extra shade. This umbrella has a 1.5-inch clamp that will hold onto anything, making it versatile for any outdoor situation. While primarily designed for sun protection, it proved durable and provided satisfactory rain coverage for one person, although the lopsided design (one half of the umbrella is longer than the other) required adjustments in windy conditions. The material is durable, but we found that the frame can be flimsy depending on what it's attached to.

Other Travel Umbrellas We Liked

Three additional travel umbrellas we tested couldn’t quite earn a spot on our list due to minor issues but still had notable features that may meet the needs of some travelers.

Blunt Metro Umbrella : It’s clear that this umbrella’s structure provides durability, but despite its quality build, we found it to be too large for daily commuting and travel. However, this could be an excellent option to keep at home.

Samsonite Windguard Auto Umbrella : The umbrella's durability and quality materials make it feel sturdy and capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions, providing reliable protection. However, it requires significant force to close, which could be challenging for individuals with limited hand or arm strength. It also only comes in one color option: black.

EuroSchirm Swing Liteflex Ultra-light Weight Trekking Umbrella : This umbrella has a lightweight design and spacious canopy that accommodates two people comfortably, but the high price point and elongated size of the collapsed umbrella limits its portability and affordability compared to other travel umbrellas on the market.

Our T+L team tested 18 travel umbrellas in everyday scenarios to assess ease of use, protection, durability, portability, and value. We followed a comprehensive examination to evaluate each option, including overall construction, packability, performance in wet weather and windy conditions, coverage, drying time, and sturdiness. We used the umbrellas in a variety of practical scenarios, including rainy and windy days, and tested them while commuting to and from work to determine functionality, versatility, and durability.

We took notes on how easy it was to open and close the umbrellas and their portability in different sized bags. Special attention was paid to the durability and quality of the umbrellas’ materials, including the fabric, wire structure, handle, and pole, to assess long-term resilience. In wet weather conditions, the umbrellas’ performance was evaluated in terms of its coverage, sturdiness, and comfort. Assessments include whether the umbrella adequately protects from rain, its size when fully open, the comfort of the handle, and stability in windy conditions. If exposed to rain, we also took notes on the time it took for the umbrella to dry completely and any signs of wear and tear. Some options did not make this list due to low-quality materials that blew inside out too easily and didn’t offer adequate coverage in the rain.

Our long-term plan includes testing these umbrellas for an additional six months to monitor each umbrella’s performance and durability in different travel scenarios and weather conditions. As we continue to test the umbrellas in various real-world settings, we will take notes on portability, practicality, and durability, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of each travel umbrella’s reliability. We will update these results if our findings should change and as we test new umbrellas.

Tips for Buying Travel Umbrellas

Think about how compact you need it to be.

Before purchasing the travel umbrella that is best for you, take a moment and think about your intended use. Determine whether you need the umbrella for occasional travel or everyday use, as this will influence factors like durability and portability. Assess whether the dimensions — especially the length of it when not in use — and weight of the umbrella suit your preferred method of carrying it, whether in a pocket, purse, backpack, or by its strap/handle.

We recommend opting for umbrellas that are specifically designed for travel since they are often more compact and lightweight compared to regular umbrellas. Additionally, pay attention to the dimensions of the umbrella when it’s fully open. Some travel umbrellas are designed for one person, while others are larger and suitable for two. Choose the size that best fits your needs, whether you prefer individual coverage or sharing with a travel companion.

Prioritize durable materials

When you're on the hunt for a travel umbrella, don't forget about durability. Look out for ones that have durable materials to ensure longevity and reliable performance, including fiberglass, aluminum, or sturdy steel for the frame and ribs. (Pro tip: all of our recommendations on this list are made from one of these three materials.) A strong canopy fabric, preferably with water-repellent coatings, adds to the umbrella's durability and weather resistance.

And, don’t overlook the quality of the handle and grip, as this will make or break your rainy day travels. Choose options with handles made from comfortable, non-slip materials like rubber or foam, ensuring a secure hold even in wet conditions. Ergonomic designs further enhance comfort during prolonged use.

Look for useful features

When purchasing a travel umbrella, look for useful features that enhance convenience and functionality. Consider umbrellas with a carrying strap that allows you to loop it around your wrist while walking, keeping your hands free for other tasks. A rubberized handle provides a secure grip, especially in rainy conditions, reducing the risk of slippage.

Opt for umbrellas with alternate designs such as inverted umbrellas or those made from Teflon-coated materials. Inverted umbrellas fold inward, trapping water inside and preventing drips when closed, while Teflon-coated fabrics repel water and facilitate quicker drying, ideal for on-the-go use.

Additionally, consider other features like automatic open and close mechanisms for effortless operation, windproof designs with reinforced frames and vents to withstand strong winds, and UV protection for added sun safety during outdoor activities.

The ideal diameter for a travel umbrella depends on personal preference and intended use, but a common diameter range for travel umbrellas is between 36 to 42 inches when fully opened. This size provides a balance between compactness for portability and sufficient coverage to protect against rain.

If you plan on using the umbrella for two people, a diameter closer to 48 inches or more would provide sufficient coverage for both individuals. Ultimately, the best diameter for a travel umbrella is one that suits your specific needs and preferences while offering adequate protection from the elements.

An umbrella is considered windproof when it's designed and constructed to withstand strong wind gusts without flipping inside out or breaking. Several key features contribute to making an umbrella windproof, including a sturdy frame and a flexible and durable canopy material that can withstand wind pressure without tearing or collapsing. Even automatic open and close mechanisms ensure quick deployment and retraction, enabling the umbrella to be easily deployed even in sudden gusts of wind.

Yes, you can bring an umbrella on a plane. According to the TSA , umbrellas are allowed for both carry-on and checked baggage, as long as you adhere to size and weight restrictions. In this case, we recommend packing a portable, compact umbrella to avoid any potential hold ups during a security screening.

We test travel products of all kinds from the best beach umbrellas to the best beach chairs and feature top products and destinations in our Good Housekeeping Family Travel Awards . When testing umbrellas, we pay close attention to ease of use, performance and durability, and even conduct a spray test to stimulate a light rain shower in Lab. While we haven't tested every travel umbrella in this round-up, we scoured shoppers' reviews to better understand how the product held up in daily life.

Read on to learn more about our top-rated travel umbrellas of all styles and prices, as well as advice on what to consider when shopping for a new mini umbrella.

GH Institute's Executive Director of Strategy & Operations, Lexie Sachs , has been using this smaller version of our top-tested umbrella for the past year. "It’s not the smallest umbrella to pack on the go, but it’s compact enough to easily fit into a tote bag or backpack," she says. The umbrella provides enough coverage to keep you dry, and it's sturdy when the wind and rain pick up. Yellow is a classic color for rainwear, but if you want a more neutral black or a bright pink , the umbrella is available in other colors too. The Samsonite umbrella is also top-rated on Amazon. One five-star review says, "We have had very heavy, windy rainstorms in my area over the past few months. This umbrella has held up very well in the rain and winds."

Dimensions: 12" folded | Weight: 0.82 lbs.

This umbrella is a popular choice on Amazon with over 5,500 reviews. It's also under $10, which means you can stay dry while sticking to your travel budget. What's more? The manufacturer claims the umbrella can fit in a pocket or purse! Choose from over two dozen colors to match your umbrella with your favorite raincoat and rain boots . One satisfied shopper writes, "I knew we would be sightseeing and wanted something compact that I could carry around and pop out when needed. This did the trick!" While this umbrella is super compact and affordable, one GH editor who bought the umbrella for a semester abroad found it to be hard to open and noticed it wasn't as wind-resistant as other models.

Dimensions: ‎7.6" x 4.84" x 2.09" | Weight: 6.7 oz.

When we tested the Totes mini umbrella, we found that it provided good coverage and was compact enough to fit into small purses and bags. While we are fans of this lightweight pick, it is a manual umbrella so you can't open and close via a button. Still, our evaluation found it to be a durable pick and we like the easy-to-grip rubber handle. Choose from seven cute patterns, including polka dots and cheetah print. One five-star review writes, "I took this on my trip to Italy and it worked perfectly without taking up much space in my bag. Love it!"

Dimensions: ‎6.2" x 1.9" x 1.7" | Weight: 8 oz.

Although this is one of the more expensive travel umbrellas in our guide, it comes packed with convenient features we love, and can it stand up against gusts of wind. "I’ve used this travel size one a bunch of times and it’s held up really well," says Sachs. We appreciate the auto open/close and comfortable handle plus a wrist strap for easy holding while your hands are full. Despite its small design, the umbrella still provides good coverage. One satisfied shopper writes they took it to Wellington, New Zealand and the Scottish highlands, fairly wet climates, and reported that "it took both total downpours and heavy drizzles with ease."

Dimensions: 13" x 2.5" x 2.5" | Weight: 0.85 lbs

At the end of the day, an umbrella is also an accessory. If you want to make a fashion statement — and not lose track of yours in a crowded umbrella stand — opt for an umbrella with a unique pattern. The five available floral patterns plus a cute option with drawings of houses and trees bring classic teardrop and polka dot patterns to a whole new level. A wooden handle adds to the luxe look and the auto open/close mechanism makes for easy use. We haven't tested this model yet, but one five-star review writes: "This umbrella is just gorgeous. The colors are vivid and bright." It isn't the most expensive umbrella on our list, but it is definitely above average in cost.

Dimensions: Not listed | Weight: Not listed

This Amazon's Choice umbrella has an impressive 72,650 online reviews with an overall 4.5-star rating. One satisfied customer writes, "This umbrella is the best I’ve owned so far. It’s huge and the water slides right off it. You just shake the umbrella and it’s no longer wet." Available in nine colors and packs of one, two, three or four, this Repel umbrella is a popular choice among shoppers — and it's under $25! The brand claims that you can fit it in your pocket or small purse. While we appreciate the size and price point, Lab analysts found it to be less flip-resistant than other models we've tested, with one noting that it inverted during their first time using it.

Dimensions: 11.5" folded | Weight: 15 oz.

While this is the most expensive travel umbrella included in our list, the splurge can be worth it if you travel often for work and need a high-quality product that'll look chic in your work backpack . It opens and closes with the push of a button, and the subtle red accents and reflective trim set it apart. We also like the rubberized carrying strap for a better grip, and it won't absorb water. The luxury umbrella would make a practical gift for the frequent traveler in your life.

Dimensions: 11.25" x 2.75" x 2.5" | Weight: 0.74 lbs

Davek is a popular brand among umbrella shoppers on Reddit , and the Mini is its smallest model that can fit in a handbag, clutch or pocket. It's available in 10 solid colors and has nice design features like a stylish handle and color-coordinated carry loop. While we appreciate the lightweight design you can store in your bag, we wish that it was more affordable. The frame appears less sturdy than other pricey models and a manual open/close may not be as easy to use compared to an automatic umbrella. That all said, the sleek and minimalistic umbrella fits in the palm of your hand and is nice and sleek.

Dimensions: 7" folded | Weight: 8 oz.

What to consider when buying a travel umbrella

line break

✔️ Size: A travel umbrella will have a shorter canopy diameter than a full-size umbrella. While you lose some coverage, a smaller model means it takes up less space in your suitcase, purse or work bag. If you have a specific bag you plan to store it in, pay attention to the folded dimensions listed by the manufacturer.

✔️ Weight: Similar to size, travel umbrellas tend to be lighter weight than large umbrellas. This again helps with packing light, but it can mean that the umbrella feels less sturdy and may not hold up as well against rough winds.

✔️ Material: Umbrellas are made of synthetic fabrics (e.g., nylon or polyester) that have waterproof coatings so rain slides off easily.

✔️ Vents: These are small openings in the umbrella's canopy that help wind flow through to decrease the likelihood of your umbrella flips inside out. Note that vents are typically more common in full-size umbrellas.

✔️ Features: There are a few additional features to look out for when choosing the right umbrella for you. When it comes to the opening mechanism, the majority of our top-rated picks have an automatic open/close design so you can simply push a button. A few styles have a manual design that requires you to open and close the umbrella yourself. Another minor feature we like is an included case so you can keep your umbrella covered while traveling.

#2 – Most Portable: HERO Travel Umbrella

HERO Travel Umbrella

Meet the most portable umbrella: HERO Travel Umbrella

  • 13.74 inches long
  • 40 inches Wide

Gunning for the crown is this upstart travel umbrella, a new option that has turned heads as quickly as kept them dry.

We can be heroes with the right equipment in our pocket, and the convenient hardshell case allows your lightweight travel umbrella to be protected while compacting down to fit into even the smallest pack, even a travel purse .

Once unravelled, the travel umbrella promises best-in-class rain coverage thanks to comprehensive and robust ribs and Teflon coverage. Even though it’s one of the most compact umbrellas out there, it will still withstand some strong winds and is a great option if you’re looking for a windproof umbrella.

With the same lifetime guarantee as the Repel windproof travel umbrella, the only reason the HERO travel umbrella isn’t higher on the list is the slightly larger price point. However, travellers looking to invest in an extra splash of coverage can rely on this option to help stay dry. It might just be the only umbrella you’ll have to buy!

#3 – Best Wind Protection: Goothdurs Windproof Travel Umbrella

travelling light umbrella

Our pick for best wind protection is Goothdurs Windproof Travel Umbrella

  • 12.4 inches long
  • 40 inches long

With a simple yet colourful design scheme and top-notch reinforcements in the right places, this windproof travel umbrella is protection made interesting. The umbrella uses a mix of alloy steel and carbon fibre to strengthen its ribs while remaining one of the most lightweight options on the market.

We gave this Goothdurs Umbrella incredibly high rain-resistant ratings thanks to the Pongee material used in the outer layer, also giving the umbrella its signature look. The fabric naturally repels even the strongest showers. With a double canopy, you’re not going to be caught out any time with this compact travel umbrella.

Wrap it all up in the included carrying case and take this compact umbrella wherever the storm finds you. If you’re looking for the best windproof umbrella then you can’t go wrong with this number!

#4 – Most Convenient: LANBRELLA Inverted Umbrella

Glamore Inverted Umbrella

LANBRELLA Inverted Umbrella is one of the most convenient umbrella

  • 42 inches wide
  • 32 inches long

This umbrella thinks a bit differently. The handle slips right over your wrist which allows you easy access to your phone or an ice cream cone while the umbrella is in operation.

When it’s time for storage, you won’t find anything more convenient than LANBRELLAs inside-out design. No one wants a wet umbrella in their backpack!

Flip this umbrella over, and it will completely seal off the damp side of the product from the rest of your possessions until you get home. This umbrella can’t entirely fold in half, but the inverted design still makes it a compact umbrella.

The cherry on top is the luminous band on the outside edges of the otherwise black umbrella that allows you to be spotted quickly crossing dark streets at night. Packed full of new features, there’s something for everyone in this option, making it one of the best umbrellas on the market.

#5 – Most Stylish: Kate Spade Raindrop Travel Umbrella

Kate Spade Raindrop Travel Umbrella

Meet the most stylish umbrella: Kate Spade Raindrop Travel Umbrella

  • 40 inches wide
  • 12.75 inches long

Sometimes it’s worth splurging to look good. Pop-out in a rainstorm with the high-quality coverage provided by this less adventurous travel umbrella. It comes with a convenient wrist strap and automatic open capabilities.

This umbrella can’t fold in half and won’t break any space-saving records, but it doesn’t weigh much more than some of the lightest travel options on the market, and it will provide a splash of much-needed colour on a cloudy day.

#6 – Best Lightweight: Umenice Automatic Travel Umbrella

Umenice Automatic Travel Umbrella

Umenice Automatic Travel Umbrella is our pick for best lightweight umbrella

  • 39 inches wide

This lightweight umbrella still expands for enough coverage to protect two people and is favoured by travellers who take every ounce seriously. Tucked inside its travel case, you can slide this travel umbrella into a purse or jean pocket and carry rain protection everywhere you go. It might just be the best most compact travel umbrella on the market for those packing light.

While it lacks Teflon or other high-performance features to make it a completely windproof umbrella, it’s still made out of steel and fibreglass materials that won’t crumble at the first gust.

Even the most lightweight backpackers can find the space necessary to bring along this compact travel umbrella. If you’re specifically looking for portable umbrellas then this brolly is gonna get the job done.

#7 – Best Casing: BodyGuard Travel Umbrella

BodyGuard Travel Umbrella

Our pick for best casing umbrella is BodyGuard Travel Umbrella

  • 13.3 inches long
  • 37 inches wide

Each rib on your travel umbrella will help to protect you from windy conditions better, so it’s never a bad idea to bring along a few extra. Unlike most travel umbrellas which feature eight ribs, this bodyguard spreads its rain coverage across ten ribs to provide more wind resistance.

The extra ribs better protect the Teflon technology that is spread across the canopy, allowing water to wick off quickly and helping the umbrella dry faster than the competition. Once it’s dried up, it fits nicely inside the included leather case for a fashionable and protected look.

While slightly more expensive than some industry-leading options, this travel umbrella packs plenty of safety features to justify an extra few bucks. You’re really getting a quality umbrella here for the money.

#8 – Most Variety: Lewis N. Clark Travel Umbrella

Lewis N Clark Travel Umbrella

Lewis N. Clark Travel Umbrella is our pick for most variety umbrella

  • 11 inches long
  • 38 inches wide

Lewis N. Clark surely wished they had the technologies included in this travel umbrella when they first crossed the country, as the rain coverage in this travel tool will make any trip better. The umbrella folds up smaller than some of the best travel umbrellas on the market, and when it’s time to use it, the wide diameter keeps everything dry.

All of this in an affordable package makes the umbrella a no-brainer, and the company’s one-year guarantee will make sure you get your money’s worth. Is it the best compact umbrella on the market? Quite possibly!

You can choose between a variety of fun colours or stick to black. No matter what colour you pick, you’ll have lightweight rain protection that can survive winds up to 30 mph.

#9 – Best Quick Dry: EEZ-Y Travel Umbrella

EEZ Y Travel Umbrella

EEZ-Y Travel Umbrella is one of the best quick dry umbrella

Another option that isn’t trying to do too much, this easy travel umbrella won’t save you from a tropical storm, but it can hold its own in most rain showers. The umbrella has venting technology across the entire double canopy, which allows the umbrella to dry faster than the competition.

This feature also allows wind to blow through without carrying you away. The vented double canopy still folds up to an incredibly compact size, and a reinforced steel frame should last a lifetime.

It’s not as wide as the best umbrellas on this list, but its affordability and variety of protection features still make this quality umbrella a great addition to any travel arsenal.

#10 – Most Affordable: AmazonBasics Automatic Travel Umbrella

AmazonBasics Automatic Travel Umbrella

Our pick for most affordable umbrella is AmazonBasics Automatic Travel Umbrella

  • 11.2 inches long

If you’re not expecting much out of your travel umbrella, you won’t need more than the basics. Amazon has provided enough lightweight features in a compact body to provide a quality travel umbrella as long as you’re not expecting much wind.

The umbrella includes button-operated open and close features and still provides full-sized protection despite rolling up into an 11-inch package. Unfortunately, while slim and protective, you won’t find any durable materials on this product, with a simple steel alloy frame.

It might not be the best umbrella out there, but if you get caught in a drizzle from time to time, having this travel umbrella in your bag will prevent a bad day from getting worse.

Now, you  could spend a fat chunk of $$$ on the WRONG present for someone. Wrong size hiking boots, wrong fit backpack, wrong shape sleeping bag… As any adventurer will tell you, gear is a personal choice.

So give the adventurer in your life the gift of convenience: buy them an REI Co-op gift card!  REI is The Broke Backpacker’s retailer of choice for ALL things outdoors, and an REI gift card is the perfect present you can buy from them. And then you won’t have to keep the receipt. 😉

If you stick around long enough, there’s bound to be some rain. The perfect travel umbrella is small enough that you don’t notice it in your bag for months but is ready to open up and protect you and your gear in a flash.

When it’s time to open up your umbrella, you won’t want to spend your walk home fighting with the wind either. The best umbrella stands up to not only the rain but won’t flip inside out at the slightest breeze!

Strong wind gusts are your umbrella’s worst nightmare, and if you don’t have the right travel umbrella, your protection could be gone with the wind! Think, Mary Poppins gone wrong!

Umbrella companies have taken measures to provide compact but resilient travel companions that offer varying levels of the following characteristics. Great umbrellas balance protection, hardiness, and compactness with keeping the costs down to qualify as a contending product.

Let’s be honest, even if you’ve got the best travel bag out there, you still don’t want to risk it getting soaked wet if it’s got your expensive laptop and travel camera inside!

What’s the point of an umbrella if it is not good at protecting you? Protection should be the deciding factor when you are searching for the perfect travel umbrella.

Every travel umbrella may hold its own in a minor rain shower, but few can handle gale-force winds.

If you’re expecting some foul weather, look for stainless steel frames and ribs that are malleable but resilient.  Blending these frames with Teflon-coated exterior layers or flexible fibreglass allows certain high-tech travel umbrellas to tolerate windy conditions better. Some umbrellas also have a double canopy to allow wind to move through without catching in the canopy.

Travel umbrellas that promise to be windproof can stay in shape through winds up to 60 mph. If you’re experiencing winds any more robust than that, I highly suggest you get inside immediately!

The best brands have battle-tested their brolly’s in various laboratory conditions to prove their worth on a windy day, and others have sacrificed a few high-performance pieces to be extraordinarily lightweight or compact.

Compactness

Every travel umbrella seeks to find the perfect balance between compact size and complete rain protection. You’ll have to decide for yourself how much space in your luggage you’re willing to sacrifice for a larger canopy.

A quality travel umbrella should fold up by telescoping to take up less precious cargo space, squeezing down to packages about a foot long. All of the umbrellas on our list can compact themselves to fit easily in any carry-on luggage.

These compact umbrellas are made lightweight to fit into more bags using light metals and sacrificing some canopy reach compared to an everyday parasol. Look for travel umbrellas to only weigh around one pound, while some of the best-in-class options are closer to half a pound.

Juxtapose the weight with your coverage requirements. Umbrella enthusiasts agree that a 23 inches canopy is the minimum length necessary to protect one person. However, you’ll want your canopy to tack on a few inches if you expect it to guard your bags as well as your body.

Finding the perfect blend to these stats is the recipe for a great travel companion. If your Bumbershoot is too big, it might be tempting to leave it out of your day pack, which could be a fatal mistake.

On the other hand, an umbrella that is too small to protect you and your belongings entirely is useless no matter how little space it takes up.

Whether it’s facing the wind, rain, sleet, or grumpy baggage handlers, you’ll need a travel umbrella that can take a beating. Luckily, some of the most lightweight metals have also proven themselves capable of absorbing a few punches.

Fibreglass steel and Teflon will provide the hardiest protection, followed closely by lightweight aluminium alloy. Ideally, your umbrella will have a combination of a few of these elements that allow it to stay light and strong.

If you don’t want to buy a new umbrella every year, it’s worth investing a few extra dollars into a high-quality product that combines these metals. Cheap substitutes can talk a big game but can often snap after a few weeks in the bottom of your luggage.

Some of the best travel umbrellas on the market take protection a step further by providing a tough yet packable case that makes it easier to safely and compactly store your umbrella.

The best travel umbrella for you largely depends on where and when you’ll often use it. But the last thing you want is to have to test your umbrella for the first time while on vacation.

After dramatic technical failures, we’ve tossed one too many umbrellas into public trash cans (popped hinges! Ripped fabric! Sound familiar?). So, we decided it was high time for a more methodical approach to finding an excellent travel umbrella. We’ve narrowed down the field to 10 umbrellas, which we’re confident packing in our bags when we hit the road.

Best Compact Travel Umbrellas

Traveler type: Carry-on only is your travel mantra, but you want something a little sturdier than traditional budget options.

These compact travel umbrellas are made for travelers who want something small and light that also delivers a higher quality than budget options, with automatic open-and-close functionality and more durable construction.

EEZ-Y Compact Travel Umbrella

EEZ-Y Compact Travel Umbrella in green, best travel umbrella

As far as compact umbrellas go, this one delivers solid construction for its price tag. The umbrella folds to 11 inches and weighs just over 14 ounces for easy packing. Its not-your-average-mini-umbrella construction, including a double canopy with nine ribs, adds durability in wind gusts.

Davek Solo Umbrella

Davek Solo Umbrella in black, collapsed and held together with a velcro strap, best travel umbrella

A bit heavier (1 pound 2 ounces) and longer (11.75 inches) than the EEZ-Y model, the Davek Solo makes up for the added weight and space with a wind-resistant frame designed to withstand more than a breeze. It’s a little pricier than your traditional mini umbrella; however, the brand’s Loss Protection Card offers you 50 percent off a new umbrella if you lose yours, and there’s a lifetime guarantee to protect you in case of mechanical problems.

Most Durable Travel Umbrellas

Traveler type: You don’t mind the extra weight if it means your umbrella won’t turn inside out as often.

If you’re the type of traveler who always seems to be wrestling with your umbrella in the slightest breeze, these umbrellas are for you. These travel umbrellas are made to withstand wind thanks to details like venting systems of overlapping fabric layers, additional springs at joints, and more robust materials.

Blunt Metro Travel Umbrella

Blunt Metro Travel Umbrella in blue, best travel umbrella

While it’s a little longer than other travel umbrellas (14 inches), this Blunt model is still light at just over 12 ounces. It has been designed to withstand winds up to 55 miles per hour and has blunt edges, so it won’t puncture holes in anything when you stash it in your luggage (or hurt passersby in crowded cities). Despite its manual close, we also found that this umbrella had the smoothest opening and closing of any umbrella we’ve ever tried.

GustBuster Metro

GustBuster Metro in black

Like the Blunt Metro, the GustBuster Metro is designed to withstand 55-mile-per-hour gusts. Its double canopy waterproof construction also makes it one that can protect you from the heavy rains that often accompany the wind. At 16 inches and 1.1 pounds, it’s one of the bigger options on this list, but if you’re looking for your sturdiest option, this is it.

Best Cheap Travel Umbrellas

Traveler type: You always leave your umbrella behind at restaurants, on trains, in cabs….

While these umbrellas aren’t the toughest, you won’t mind losing them. Fortunately, some of the most inexpensive umbrellas are also the lightest and most packable, meaning you’ll almost always have space for them in your luggage or day bag.

Totes TRX Manual Mini Trekker

Totes TRX Manual Mini Trekker in a multi-color pattern

Coming in at eight ounces and 6.5 inches when folded, this option from Totes is one of the best mini umbrellas—ideal for throwing in your day bag if there’s a chance of rain. It also doubles as a shade source during warmer days with built-in sun guard UPF 50 protection. With nearly a dozen colors and patterns, you can find the one that best matches your travel outfits.

Lewis N. Clark Travel Umbrella

Lewis N. Clark Travel Umbrella in light blue

This 10-ounce, 10.75-inch-long umbrella will likely turn inside out on you when it gets windy, but the good news is that it’s proven to pop back into shape time and time again easily. It’s also easier to close with an auto open/close button.

Best Travel Umbrellas for Heavy Rain

Traveler type: Even a monsoon won’t stop you from exploring on your trip.

If you know you’re going to a particularly rainy destination or must keep your outfit completely dry in a storm, look for an umbrella with a larger canopy. The tradeoff for better coverage is often a longer umbrella and more weight.

Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella

Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella in black

Coated with Teflon, this umbrella dries faster than umbrellas without a Teflon coating, so you can easily stash it in your bag when the rain (hopefully) stops. The double-vented canopy gives this umbrella extra flex that helps it stand up to powerful gusts. Measuring 11.5 inches long and weighing under a pound, this Repel umbrella is still a relatively small, light option.

Bodyguard Windproof Travel Umbrella

Bodyguard Windproof Travel Umbrella in several colors

Reinforced with ten flexible ribs for higher winds, this umbrella is another Teflon-coated option, ensuring water runs off your umbrella and not onto you. The 46.5-inch canopy is slightly larger than the Repel’s, giving you added protection (or allowing you to squeeze in another travel companion if you feel like sharing). It is, however, an inch longer.

Best Large Umbrellas for Couples

Traveler type: You and your companion don’t mind huddling together to stay out of the rain.

Ultra-packable umbrellas are often designed for one person, meaning if you’re traveling with family, you might want to equip each member with their own. However, vacationers traveling in pairs can get around packing multiples with these umbrellas designed to shelter two.

Prospo 62 Inch Large Travel Umbrella

The Prospo 62 Inch Large Travel Umbrella in black in the forefront, with four smaller color options in the upper right corner

With an oversized canopy (62 inches), this umbrella has plenty of room to fit two but folds up to only 15 inches so it won’t take up space in your bag.

Kalolary 62 Inch Extra Oversize Large Compact Golf Umbrella

Kalolary 62 Inch Extra Oversize Large Compact Golf Umbrella in black with yellow trim

With a 62-inch diameter, this umbrella has plenty of room for two people. The best part? It closes up to 11.8 inches, putting it on par with more compact travel umbrellas. While it’s a bit heavier at just over a pound, the size of it open outweighs the extra weight.

7 Best Travel Umbrellas – Pack Light & Stay Dry (2024 Reviews)

best travel umbrellas

When I packed for my trips, it always seemed like the last item I remembered to include was a travel umbrella. I once got caught in Mexico City in a sudden downpour far from my hotel, leaving me too soaking wet to continue sightseeing. I had to turn back, and let’s just say the soggy return journey to my hotel wasn’t a fun one.

I know from experience how important it is to have a reliable travel umbrella when taking a trip. They’re light and won’t weigh you down, but they’re durable and will actually keep you dry if you get caught in the rain.

hero travel umbrella

1. So you can get out and explore even in the rain.

I’m slightly obsessed with checking the weather forecast when we go on vacation. I want to be able to plan our activities based on the weather, but as we all know, the weather is unpredictable. Plan to bring an umbrella on days that it might rain as well as days it looks unlikely. You don’t want to risk getting soaking wet and catching a cold on your vacation. You also don’t want to be stuck inside all day because you don’t have an umbrella to help you brave the rain. Choosing a reliable travel umbrella will let you continue to explore even on rainy days.

2. So you don’t overspend on a poor-quality umbrella.

Maybe you’re thinking you’ll take your chances and not pack an umbrella. If it does rain you can easily find one at any gift shop anyway, right? While this may be true, I think we all also know how overpriced and poor-quality gift shop items are. You’ll end up spending way too much on an umbrella that probably won’t even last one rain shower. It happened to me! I bought a cheap umbrella in Mont-Saint-Michel, France and it turned inside-out with the first gust of wind. It’s better to be prepared, buy a quality travel umbrella before your trip, and you’ll save yourself some money and a lot of trouble.

3. To protect yourself from the elements.

The best travel umbrellas, 1. hero travel umbrella, (most well-rounded — $$).

Why it’s great: This umbrella has all the important features that a travel umbrella should have. It’s windproof and won’t collapse on you thanks to the strong, but lightweight fiberglass-reinforced ribs. It weighs less than a pound and comes in at just a foot long, making it super portable and comfortable to carry around. The canopy is coated in Teflon so it’s ultra waterproof and it’s 25% bigger than most travel umbrellas with a canopy of 46 inches so you can fit two people underneath. The added hard case is also an awesome bonus that you won’t see with most travel umbrellas.

Keep in mind: It’s only available in black so that could be a downside for those who love color.

2. EEZ-Y Travel Umbrella

(double vented design — $).

Why it’s great: This umbrella is available in a rainbow of fun colors. It’s one of the more lightweight umbrellas on the list at only 0.9 lbs and when folded is only 11 inches long. It also boasts durable materials and a windproof design.

Keep in mind: Since this umbrella is slightly more lightweight and compact than others, there is less room under the canopy than with other umbrellas.

EEZ-Y Travel Umbrella

3. Repel Travel Umbrella

(sturdy design — $$).

Why it’s great: The auto open and close makes using this umbrella a breeze. It’s built to withstand all kinds of weather with its nine fiberglass-reinforced ribs. The fun patterns set it apart from other travel umbrellas.

Keep in mind: The patterned design options cost a bit more than the solid color options.

Repel Travel Umbrella

4. Amazon Basics Travel Umbrella

(best budget option — $).

Why it’s great: If you’re looking for a budget, no-frills option, then Amazon Basics has got you covered. This travel umbrella is small, lightweight, and gets the job done at a low cost.

Keep in mind: It lacks some premium features like windproof fiberglass ribs and Teflon coating that other umbrellas have.

Amazon Basics Travel Umbrella

5. Yoobure Mini Umbrella

(best compact option — $).

Why it’s great: This is the most lightweight umbrella on our list, but it still boasts an excellent windproof design and UPF 50+ protection on sunny days when you want to stay cool and protected from the sun.

Keep in mind: Since this lightweight umbrella weighs just half a pound it’s smaller than most and is best suited for one person.

Yoobure Mini Umbrella

6. Rain-Mate Travel Umbrella

(nicest colors — $).

Why it’s great: This travel umbrella is a sturdy, lightweight option for your next trip. It has a lifetime replacement guarantee so you know you can depend on it for many years to come.

Keep in mind: If sun protection is important to you, you may not want to choose one of the lighter-colored options as they let more light through.

Rain-Mate Travel Umbrella

7. Lanbrella Travel Umbrella

(most unique design — $$).

Why it’s great: The unique, inverted folding design of this travel umbrella makes sure surfaces and your belongings don’t get wet when the umbrella is folded. It’s also one of the larger travel umbrellas and comfortably fits two people under the canopy.

Keep in mind: It might be easy to forget that the umbrella is wet when folded so be sure to let it dry before packing it away for good and be careful that it doesn’t splash when opening.

An ideal travel umbrella is compact and lightweight enough to carry in a day bag. Ideally, it’s less than a foot long and weighs under a pound so you can comfortably carry it around. If you want to be able to fit two people underneath then a canopy size of more than 42 inches is recommended.

2. For what countries should I pack a travel umbrella?

Most countries have sporadic rain showers year-round so it’s good to pack a travel umbrella no matter where you go. However, countries close to the equator tend to have rainy and dry seasons so look into what season it is when you plan on visiting.

3. What’s better to pack, a raincoat or a travel umbrella?

An umbrella does a better job overall at keeping you dry. With a raincoat, just your upper body stays dry and your pants tend to get soaking wet. An umbrella is also better in cities because it can be put away more easily than a raincoat and is less likely to get other things wet when stored properly.

What we can do during a trip is often dependent on the weather. It can often make or break the day’s plan, but it doesn’t always have to. Having a good travel umbrella can mean the difference between staying in the hotel all day or getting out and exploring. These well-made travel umbrellas have got you covered for all of your exciting trips to come!

Best Travel Umbrella for Rainy Destinations

The best travel umbrella will do more than keep you dry. From rainy afternoons to long days exploring a new city in the sun, this list has you covered.

Best Travel Umbrella for Rainy Destinations | 9 Small Umbrellas

For trips as short as a weekend in a new city to months-long excursions across the globe, a travel umbrella is essential to staying dry, out of the wind, and safe from the sun’s harmful rays. Whether you fall on either end of that spectrum or somewhere in the middle, this post will help you find the best travel umbrella for you.

Most umbrellas are built with rain in mind, but some go further to protect the user from wind and UV rays. Depending on what you’re using it for and what you expect from a compact umbrella, you might opt for a model that excels at different things.

If you have fair skin and hate being wet, go for an umbrella with more coverage that has excellent UV protection. You might not focus on that if you don’t often go somewhere where the sun is harmful. If you only care about not getting wet, you might go with a durable model that won’t get a hole in it or turn inside out in a big gust of wind. Whatever your needs, there’s a travel umbrella out there for you, and we’re here to help you find it. Let’s dive in!

  • Montbell Travel Umbrella
  • Blunt Metro Umbrella
  • Repel Umbrella Original Umbrella
  • Amazon Basics Compact Umbrella
  • Davek Mini Umbrella
  • EEZ-Y Travel Umbrella
  • LifeTek Travel Umbrella
  • Balios Travel Umbrella
  • Lewis N. Clark Travel Umbrella

Montbell Travel Umbrella Review

If weight is the most important thing for you in your quest to find the best travel umbrella, we have the pick for you. Not only is the Montbell Travel Umbrella extraordinarily lightweight, it’ll keep you dry in the rain, too.

It comes in at a meager 3 ounces, which won't weigh down your pack, sling , or hand. At the time of writing, it comes in Sunset Orange, Blue Black, and White colorways. They look outdoorsy, but the White option doesn't look out of place in an urban environment.

It isn't the most compact umbrella when packed down, but it'll work for most uses. Plus, the materials are still durable, so it will last you as long as you take good care of it. It feels flimsier than others we tested, but it operates as we'd hoped.

If you don't mind the outdoorsy look and want a model that won't weigh you down, this might be the best travel umbrella for you!

  • It weighs just 3 ounces
  • The materials are durable enough for most uses
  • It’s small but long when packed down
  • It might not be the best choice for rugged adventures

Blunt Metro Umbrella

When it comes to umbrellas, there are three points to look at. How does it handle precipitation? Can it be used in the wind? And how well does it block UV rays from the sun? Luckily, with the Blunt Metro Travel Umbrella, you're covered in all three areas—literally.

At the time of writing, there are eight colorways to choose from, so you can find something that matches your style. The materials will stop rain, wind (within reason), and harmful UV rays that can harm your skin. The spine is crafted from aluminum, which is durable but remains lightweight.

The look isn't for everyone; however, considering this model will protect you from anything mother nature throws at you, it might be the best travel umbrella for you!

  • Offers protection from rain, wind, and UV rays
  • One umbrella can cover most situations while traveling
  • The look isn’t for everyone
  • Not the smallest option on this list

Repel Umbrella Original Umbrella

If you're looking for the best small umbrella that is as unique as you are, look no further than The Original Repel Umbrella. It features colorway designs that go further than just your favorite colors, from Blue Sky to Rainbow and Starry Night. No matter where you end up, you'll have an umbrella that matches the vibes you bring to the table.

This isn't the lightest or most compact umbrella on the market, but it can fit inside your travel backpack or daypack . Plus, it's a reminder that daily essentials don't have to be bland.

The button makes it easy to open and close again, so trips into and out of the rain are a breeze. The canopy has a Teflon coating, ensuring you stay dry and the top doesn't leak. Whether you're looking for something vibrant for your daily excursions or something unique to set you apart in an unfamiliar city, this might be the best travel umbrella for you!

  • Comes in multiple patterns and designs in addition to solid colors
  • Simple design is easy to use
  • It isn’t very lightweight
  • Canopy doesn’t feel very durable

Amazon Basics Compact Umbrella

I bet you wondered when you'd see an Amazon product on this list. In the modern era, it's hard to escape Amazon Basics gear, and your search for a travel umbrella has likely landed you on their page, wondering whether or not it can be any good for the price. Luckily for you, we're here to say that it is!

The design has a wind vent to prevent the interior from flipping outward in heavy winds, yet it keeps you dry in a torrential downpour. The Amazon Basics Travel Umbrella is a great shout, no matter the weather.

The build quality isn't the best we've seen; however, it's hard to beat for the price. At the time of writing, this umbrella comes in at under $20. For how well it performs, we think it's a solid option in your search for the best travel umbrella for your next trip!

  • The wind vent helps ensure it doesn’t flip inside out
  • It comes at a budget-friendly price
  • The build quality isn’t the best
  • Not many colorway options

Davek Mini Umbrella

If you're looking for a small umbrella that fits into the palm of your hand, look no further than the Davek Mini. It isn't the lightest model we've tested; however, there isn't much to complain about at eight ounces.

When closed, it's around seven inches long. Yup, just over a half foot! At the time of writing, there are ten colorway options, so you can snag one that matches your travel gear. The logo is relatively large compared to the size of the umbrella, but we don't mind that much. How often are you showing off your travel umbrella?

Size isn't everything, but the Davek Mini keeps you dry from precipitation, which is what matters. It doesn't excel in use for two people, but you'll both have your heads covered! Be sure to pack a rain jacket if that’s how you plan to use it. For those looking for a just-in-case model that does the job without taking up much room, the Davek Mini might be the best travel umbrella for you!

  • It fits into the palm of your hand when compressed
  • Has good coverage for such a small umbrella
  • Won’t work well for two people
  • The loop on the handle doesn’t feel very durable

EEZ-Y Travel Umbrella

We've got you covered if you're looking for a compact budget umbrella that comes in various colorway options. The EEZ-Y Windproof Travel Umbrella is around $15, has 14 colorways available, and has Amazon Prime shipping (at least at the time of writing)!

The design utilizes a two-tiered canopy (some might call it a slit) to ensure the wind doesn't turn the umbrella inside out, but it keeps you dry in the process. The shaft is fiberglass, which is typically more durable than aluminum but is heavier. The canopy material doesn't feel as stable as others we've tested, but it's holding up strong.

Considering the price point, colorway options available, and durability of the spine, this might be the best travel umbrella for you!

  • The button open and closure is snappy and quick
  • Budget-friendly price point
  • Materials aren’t the highest quality
  • It feels cheap while using it

LifeTek Travel Umbrella

There's something appealing about a simple umbrella without any frills—a model that simply gets the job done. Right? The LifeTek Windproof Travel Umbrella checks that box and has a wide width, which we dig. What else can you ask for?

The Teflon-coated canopy does the heavy lifting as far as precipitation is concerned. The opening and closing mechanism is made of hardy fiberglass, lightweight aluminum, and versatile resin for a smooth process. The button is easy to click, making using this compact umbrella quick and stress-free.

There are 42 and 45-inch canopies available, which are wide enough for two people to stay mostly dry, but be prepared to get snug together. If you want a simple model to complete the job, this might be the best travel umbrella for you!

  • Has a Teflon coating for water protection
  • Does well in windy conditions
  • It can be difficult to close
  • Getting the cover back on takes some learning

Balios Travel Umbrella

Many budget-friendly umbrellas have handles that are subpar. The mechanism is sound, but carrying it for extended periods can be uncomfortable. Enter the Balios Travel Folding Umbrella!

Materials are top dog here. The handle is made of wood and feels comfortable to hold onto, even for an extended period. The shaft is crafted from steel, which is more durable than fiberglass or aluminum. The case has a zipper, which makes it easier to open and close than those without an opening.

All those materials considered, this compact umbrella is heavier than most on this list. However, it's still a good size for travel and will fit inside most packs without much fuss. If you want premium materials and are okay with the weight, this model from Balios might be the best travel umbrella for you!

  • The handle feels and looks premium
  • It’s wide enough for two people to use
  • It’s on the larger side of travel umbrellas
  • Wood might not last as long as some synthetic materials

Lewis N. Clark Travel Umbrella

A budget-friendly compact umbrella is ideal for trips that might get rugged or that you'll need to bring many things home. If you lose it, you won't be bummed; if it makes it back, it's a bonus. The Lewis N. Clark Travel Umbrella fits the bill and works wonderfully in the interim.

There are nine colorways available at the time of writing, so you can get one that matches your vibe. The handle is made of rubber, which is comfortable to hold onto.

The umbrella handles well in wind and rain, which is the most important thing. The materials aren't the most durable, but we haven't had any issues with them failing so far! If you want a basic option that won't break the bank, this might be the best umbrella for you!

  • Budget-friendly pricing
  • Numerous colorways available
  • Might not last long on rugged adventures
  • Colorways aren’t always spot-on with images online

So there you have it; some of the best travel umbrella models on the market. Whether going to a city or on a rugged adventure, hopefully, you’ve found an umbrella that’ll keep you dry on your journey!

7 Best Ultralight Hiking Umbrellas (and How to Use)

A guide to the best umbrellas for ultralight backpacking and how to use..

Photo: @tarwoodz

An umbrella may not be one of the top items on your thru-hiking gear list . However, you may want to think twice before counting out this incredibly useful device. Oftentimes, these are NOT junk luxury items. On the contrary, they can be crucial shields while parading through open areas.

With way more uses than the umbrellas actually get credited for, along with being one of the best sun-protection investments you can make for your skin, bringing along this roughly 8-ounce device on your next thru-hike could end up being a real game-changer on the trail.

3 Reasons to Use a Hiking Umbrella

#1 Sun: Protection FROM SERIOUS EXPOSURE

Using a hiking umbrella for sun protection in high exposed areas like tree lines trails, deserts, or long stretches of trails like the Continental Divide Trail can be your skin's saving grace. Not only will the canopy of the umbrella help deflect UV rays, but the shade created by an umbrella has been measured to decrease temps by up to 15 degrees. These cooler temperatures result in a much more enjoyable hike, along with less sweat which means less water loss all around.

#2 Rain: HIGHLY Effective FOR RUNOFF (and Breathable!)

When rain clouds blow in while out on the trail, the first thing you probably do is stop, take off your backpack, and start digging around for your rain jacket . Even though most rain jackets nowadays have improved ventilation and breathability, there are certain conditions where they still fall short.

An umbrella is by far the most breathable piece of rain gear you can own, and the ventilation you get from using an umbrella instead of wearing a rain jacket in hot conditions is unmatched. Say your hiking uphill in 90-degree temps with high humidity and it begins to rain. The last thing you probably want to do is put on more layers when you’re already hot and sweaty. This is where an umbrella really pays off. Using it will not only keep you dry, but you’ll also stay cool and properly ventilated while doing so.

When facing snow or hail, the protective rim of a hiking umbrella will stop precipitation from accumulating on your pack and shoulders. If conditions get really sketchy, your umbrella can even become an instant pop-up micro shelter to shield you when there are none readily available, like on sections of the PCT. This micro-shelter will also come in handy when you need to do things in rain like read a map , eat a meal, or just wait out the crappy weather. Umbrellas are also great wind blockers for starting fires.

#3 RANDOM PROTECTION: Self-Defense And Makeshift Shelter Add-On

Umbrellas aren’t just for protection against the weather. They can also be used as walking canes, spider web clearing devices, defense tools to scare away snakes and other wildlife.

They also make great add-on additions to your tent or shelter. If your tents sprung a leak, an umbrella can act as a rain plug. If your camping somewhere with no trees, it can become the anchor for a tarp beak. And if you’re in a heavy bug area, an umbrella can be used as a DIY bug canopy by draping a bug net over it.

When NOT to Use a Hiking Umbrella: Wind, Lightning and IcE

A hiking umbrella can be a great piece of equipment to have while out on the trail. But just like every vital piece of backpacking equipment, it too has its time and place.

A time when you should NOT use an umbrella is during windy conditions (unless you’re looking to break your umbrella or become the next modern-day Mary Poppins).

Also, it’s not a good idea to open your umbrella when there’s lightning as it is likely to attract it and shock you .

Hiking in icy conditions would be another no-no for umbrella use, as you may need both hands to brace yourself or bust out that ice axe.

when to use a hiking umbrella

Considerations

Type: Full-Size vs. Collapsible

There are two types of hiking umbrellas on the market today: full size (stick) umbrellas, and compact or (collapsible). Full size umbrellas are sturdy and reliable, yet their long-bodied classic design makes them heavier. The compact or “collapsible” umbrella is lighter and smaller than the full-size, but it’s less durable in heavy winds and the collapsible hinges weaken in time.

full-size vs. collapsible ultralight hiking umbrella

Size: Extended Length AND Canopy Diameter

How much coverage do you want from your umbrella? Do you want to be under more of a bubble or a wider arc? Do you want a shorter handle or a longer one? Do you want just your shoulders covered, or most of your body? Take these questions into consideration when looking at the various sizes and builds of umbrellas. And as always, keep in mind that the bigger you go, the more weight you’ll have.

UV Protection: UPF Ratings and Color

Traditional umbrellas only block about ¾ of the sun rays, whereas specially designed sun umbrellas block nearly 99% of UV rays. Most umbrellas have a UPF rating assigned to them, and the color of an umbrella can play a vital role in this. Silver and black canopies are both great in sun protection for different reasons. Silver canopies reflect the sun’s rays away, whereas black canopies absorb them before they can reach you.

best ultralight chrome hiking umbrellas

Weight: Between 6 and 8 Ounces

Speaking of weight, isn’t adding more weight to your already perfectly pre-planned backpack something you’re trying to avoid? Probably. But since a 6-8 oz umbrella helps with sun, rain, snow, wildlife and can become an instant micro-shelter… the extra few ounces might just be worth it.

Durability: Frame Material and Build

A well-built, quality frame will help keep the umbrella from collapsing or breaking in high winds. Frames made of steel, iron or brass are the strongest, but these materials will rust if stored when wet. Aluminum and fiberglass frames aren’t as strong as the other metals, but they are lighter and they won’t rust.

The “ribs” are important to look at on an umbrella because they are the most common part that breaks. The ribs are the arc-shaped metal pieces that run between the base of the umbrella to the fabric’s tips. They’re typically made from aluminum or steel, and they hold the canopy in place. Most umbrellas have 8 ribs, although this number can vary from 6 to 24. A strong umbrella will usually have a shaft made of steel or iron along with solid “rivets” (pieces that connect the ribs). Not hollow or see-through ones.

Canopy Fabric: PVC, Nylon OR Polyester

Buying an umbrella with the correct canopy fabric will ensure that your umbrella dries fast, blocks out the sun, and holds up for the long haul. PVC, Nylon and Polyester are great canopy materials because they’re lightweight, yet still durable.

PVC is a clear vinyl that naturally blocks 99% of direct sunlight and heat. It is the heaviest out of the three fabrics, but is also the most effective in sun, heat and rain protection.

Nylon is stronger than PVC and Polyester; however, being that it’s like silk, it's more prone to abrasion. Nylon is used less today, because it has been found to shrink in humidity which can impact the opening and closing of the umbrella.

Polyester doesn’t shrink in humidity and because it’s extremely lightweight and holds up better than PVC or Nylon to abrasion, it has become the most common material for hiking umbrella canopies today.

PVC is waterproof while Polyester and Nylon are water-resistant. Although Polyester and Nylon don’t absorb water, they will not be 100% waterproof unless applied with a waterproofing agent such as Teflon. A Teflon coating has usually already been applied to Polyester umbrellas when you buy them. This “coating” makes the water pool up and “roll” off the fabric.

Handle: Shape and Material

Shape -  The shape of a hiking umbrella handle can make a difference in how convenient and easy it will be to carry. There are two main handle styles for most umbrellas - the “straight” handle and the U-shape or “hook” handle. Straight handles are more space efficient and are typically adhered with rubber padding for comfort and durability. Hook handles are a more traditional style, and they can be very useful in hanging the umbrella upside down to dry, or even “hooking” to your arm for easy carrying.

Material -  You can find umbrellas with wooden, plastic or EVA hard foam handles. EVA hard foam is the material used in products such as yoga mats and shoe insoles. It’s also commonly used to cover umbrella handles because it’s durable, lightweight, and better yet: soft to the touch. EVA hard foam is a “closed form” structure which pretty much is the scientific way of saying it is moisture and water resistant. Umbrellas with wooden handles are more costly and heavier, whereas plastic handles are the lightest option of the three but less durable and comfortable.

Tips & FAQ

How to attach the umbrella to your pack? The "Hands-Free" Setup.

Having to carry around an umbrella for miles at a time during a thru-hike may not sound very appealing. Especially if you’re a fan of trekking poles, since, you know, you only have so many hands. Lucky for us there are crafty, inventor-like hikers out there that have figured out tactical ways for attaching umbrellas to their packs. Also lucky for us, these crafty individuals have shared their knowledge with the rest of us! That’s right, we too can learn how to hike hands free with our umbrellas.

To do so, all you’ll need 2 shock cord loops with cordlocks. They will allow you to strap the umbrella onto one of your backpack's shoulder straps. One cord loop will hold the shaft while the other will secure the handle.

Where and how to store the umbrella when not in use?

When not using your umbrella, the best place to store it is somewhere on your pack that’s easily accessible, like alongside your water bottle or in another side pocket. The idea is to put it somewhere where you can access it quickly without breaking stride. Another note: It is ALWAYS best to let your umbrella dry out after use. This will help avoid rust, mildew, or any weird smelly build-up.

UL Tip: How to minimize the weight of your ultralight umbrella?

To save you a few unnecessary ounces, you can get rid of the straps and toss out the carrying case of your hiking umbrella. If you only want to use it as an attachment to your pack, you might be able to discard the handle as well as the handle loop. Because every ounce counts!

The Anatomy of an Umbrella

Canopy: Commonly made from Nylon, Polyester or PVC, canopies are the fabric part of the umbrella that form an arc. The canopy stretches to cover the ribs of the umbrella, and the fabric is often treated with a Teflon coating for added waterproofing.

Ribs: You know the wiry pieces of metal that run along from the base of the umbrella to the canopy’s tips? Those are the ribs. Part of the frame, the ribs hold the canopy in place. There are typically 8 made from steel, aluminum, fiberglass or plastic. An umbrella made from steel will be stronger than one made from aluminum or plastic, however it will be heavier and less flexible.

Stretchers: Also made from metal, fiberglass or plastic, this is the part of the umbrella that connects the ribs to the runner. When the runner moves up the umbrella to open the canopy, the stretchers push outward placing pressure on the ribs which create the arc of the umbrella.

Shaft: Usually made from wood, metal or fiberglass the shaft is the “base” of the umbrella. This connects the frame to the handle. Full size umbrellas have one solid shaft, whereas compact umbrellas have shafts that collapse in either one or two spots.

Handle:  It's the part of the umbrella that you hold. It can be straight, curved, cushioned, gripped or covered in non-slip EVA hardfoam. On compact, collapsible umbrellas, you’ll often find that handles run smaller and are plastic.

About TravelingLight.com

Hi, I’m James . There is nothing more frustrating than packing all your travel items into a small travel bag and then getting to the airport and finding out that your idea of carry-on luggage is different from your airline’s idea of carry-on luggage.

As a regular flier that happened to me a few times, and I saw it happen many times to other unsuspecting travelers in airports around the world.

So TravelingLight.com started as a place to store information about what different airlines around the world deem to be carry on luggage . But as time passed this website evolved beyond that.

When packing you are forced to decide what is essential and what you can leave behind . Over time my packing light mindset started to spread into other areas of my life and naturally I wrote about those topics too.

I no longer write everything myself, TravelingLight.com became too popular for that. Our team now covers a broad range of topics but the goal is always to sort the wheat from the chaff to create concise web content that helps our readers.

Aurora Tourism in Iceland: You Can Seek, but You May Not Find

The country markets itself as a destination to see the northern lights — especially this year, which is a peak time for solar activity. But they can be elusive, as one writer recently found.

In Reykjavík, Iceland, aurora borealis tourism is a booming business. Hopeful tourists board buses to head out into the night in search of the northern lights. Credit... Sigga Ella for The New York Times

Amelia Nierenberg spent four nights searching for the northern lights in Iceland.

  • March 25, 2024

From the outside, it may seem like the northern lights dance across Iceland’s skies each night. On Icelandair ads, planes fly across shimmering curtains in the sky. On social media, travelers gaze at the green bands above them . The lights are even on some recycling bins in Reykjavík, the capital: “Keep Iceland Clean.”

In the past decade or so, an aurora borealis industrial complex has boomed in Iceland. Many rent a car and go out on their own, but there are northern lights big bus tours and northern lights minibus tours and northern lights Super Jeep tours . There are private guides and boat cruises . There’s an observatory base camp . There’s even a museum .

Tourists line up outside a red minibus in the twilight. Behind them, there is a light green statue that is illuminated.

But the lights can be elusive.

“Tourists sometimes expect, like, ‘At what time do you turn them on?’” said Björn Saevar Einarsson, a forecaster at Iceland’s meteorological office , chuckling. “Like we have a switch in the back room.”

This year, the letdowns are especially intense.

The northern lights, which are also called the aurora borealis, are most visible when there are solar flares, which are big eruptions on the sun that send charged particles toward Earth. This year, the sun is approaching the peak of its 11-year cycle of activity , which some assume means that the displays could peak, too.

But the enhanced solar activity doesn’t necessarily mean the northern lights will be brighter or more frequent, scientists wearily explain. Instead, they mostly mean that the lights can be seen farther south than usual: In recent months, they have been visible in Arizona , Missouri and southern England .

That doesn’t mean much for Iceland.

In fact, Icelanders and scientists said, this winter is nothing special. Sometimes, the lights are there. Sometimes, they aren’t. Just like always.

Hunting the lights

But nothing special, with the northern lights, is still very special. And so tourists keep coming .

Last month, I joined the fray. For four nights, I looked for telltale sky shimmers in and around Reykjavík.

I booked my tickets riding high — this was the best year yet, right? But as I learned more, and as my flight neared, my hopes ebbed. Scientists and tour leaders gently told me that the skies were cloudy and the solar activity seemed quiet.

“Just to let you know the forecast doesn’t look too good” Inga Dís Richter, the chief commercial officer at Icelandia , a tourism agency, wrote in an email two days before I planned to take a minibus trip with Reykjavik Excursions , one of its tour operators.

“But,” she added, “this can change.”

To find the lights, guides and travelers often rely on aurora forecasts, which overlay cloud cover and solar activity. They check them constantly, like a bride with an outdoor wedding in mid-April.

Some of the forecasts are free, like the aurora forecast run by Iceland’s meteorological office or Iceland at Night , which includes space weather. (Some are not — Aurora Forecast , which costs $12.99 a year, sends alerts.) Many people also turn to Facebook pages , where enthusiasts hungrily swap sightings.

Luck, though, is everything.

“There’s only one thing less predictable with the northern lights, and that’s the Arctic weather,” said John Mason, a global expert on the northern lights. “An aurora forecast is barely worth the paper that it’s written on.”

The guides work hard to explain the science, and set expectations. Most companies offer a free rebooking option if the lights do not show.

On my first night of aurora stalking, despite Ms. Richter’s warnings, I joined an expectant group on the Reykjavík Excursions minibus. For $88, I got a seat on the 19-person bus, which left the city’s central bus station at 9:30 p.m.

Over the next three to four hours, we would drive through the Icelandic night together. I’d either see something astonishing with these strangers — the sky, banded with light — or shiver with them shoulder-to-shoulder, awkward in the cold.

As we pulled onto the road, Gudjon Gunnarsson, the guide, set the mood early. “We are going hunting for the lights,” he said, emphasizing the word “hunting,” “similar to going out fishing in a lake.”

He drove for about 45 minutes, letting Reykjavík’s glow fade behind us. The city has about 140,000 people, and no real skyscrapers, so there’s limited light pollution. Although the northern lights can appear over the city, it’s best to see them in total darkness.

Then he paused and consulted with another guide.

“It is too cloudy here,” he told his flock. “So we will keep driving.”

But as we kept driving, clouds turned to a dense fog, so thick that the moon all but disappeared.

Mr. Gunnarsson turned off the main highway about an hour after we left Reykjavík. He parked in a parking lot. Or maybe it was a side street? The darkness was so deep that I could only make out the moonlight on the ocean, and only then after my eyes adjusted.

We disembarked and stood dutifully beside him, staring up at the sky. Then, one woman pointed toward Reykjavík. Were those the lights? (No. That was light pollution.)

Christof Reinhard, 65, who owns a medical laser company and was visiting with his family from Paris, mused that our search was a little bit like a safari. Sure, the desert is amazing, but it’s much better with lions. Or, maybe, was this more like a whale watch?

“Instead of a boat,” he said, “you have a bus.”

Mr. Gunnarsson watched the group stomp their feet and bend into the wind. Fifteen minutes. Then, half an hour. The clouds hung thick above. “There’s nothing happening here, as you can see,” he finally said to relieved chuckles. “It’s one of those nights where you just have to give up.”

Tourists can get mad, Mr. Gunnarsson and other guides said. It’s rare, but it does happen.

“It’s the trip that has our worst reviews,” said Eric Larimer, the digital marketing manager for Gray Line Iceland , a day tour and airport transport company.

A wake-up call for the aurora

For some, the joy is in the search, even if there is no find. A few focus on astronomy, often opting to stay at Hotel Rangá , which is just off the main ring road (Route 1) near Iceland’s south coast.

The hotel looks unassuming — low-slung and wooden — but it’s one of the most famous in Iceland. (The Kardashians stayed there . So did the Real Housewives of Orange County .) A standard room costs more than $300, depending on the season.

But Rangá doesn’t just cater to celebrities. It also draws astronomy buffs, enticed by its “aurora wake-up call” service and its observatory, which has state-of-the-art telescopes.

“One thing is to sell them,” said Fridrik Pálsson, the hotel’s owner, speaking of the northern lights. “Another thing is to deliver them.”

About 20 years ago, before the northern lights industry took off, he delegated the night security guard to monitor the sky. The guard pokes his head out every few minutes to look for the telltale flicker. If he sees the lights, he alerts the guests.

The service aims to address one of the main issues with hunting for the northern lights: They are usually only visible on winter nights, when it is very cold, very windy and very late.

“To be a good northern lights observer, you need the constitution of an insomniac polar bear,” Dr. Mason said.

My room phone, alas, stayed silent. But I did dream about the lights — great Wonka colors swirling, strangely, behind the Chrysler Building.

Mr. Pálsson built the observatory, too. Even if the lights didn’t show up, he figured, the stars are still magnificent — and, for city dwellers, also rare. The hotel contracts astronomers to work the telescopes and explain the stars to guests. On my second night in Iceland, as twilight slipped below happy-hour skies, I crunched across the snow to the observatory with Saevar Helgi Bragason, an Icelandic science communicator who leads the astronomy program.

He bent into a toddler-size telescope, focusing it on the moon’s craters. They looked clearer than the hotel, just a short walk away. It was too early for the lights, he said. And that evening seemed too cloudy (on Earth) and too quiet (on the sun).

Mr. Bragason joked that the lights can get in his way — they create a mist over the stars he really wants to see. But tourists often come specifically to see them. And sometimes, he said, as they wait impatiently, they can miss the real wonder.

“You’re left with these beautiful skies above you,” he said. “Basically, literally, another universe opens up.”

Creating a lights season

Hotel Rangá was a pioneer in Iceland’s northern lights tourism industry: About two decades ago, people came to Iceland for the long summer days, and left as daylight slipped farther south.

“I found it rather stupid in the beginning,” admitted Mr. Pálsson, the owner of Rangá, speaking of northern lights tourism.

But spreading tourism throughout the year made sense. Partly, that was an environmental concern. The tourists would crowd the country’s extraordinary natural sites over just a few months. It was also economic. When the visitors left Iceland, tourism jobs would ebb with the sunlight.

So the northern lights, which are reliably visible from September to March, became the backbone of the country’s winter branding, said Sveinn Birkir Björnsson, the marketing and communications director at Business Iceland , which promotes the country.

“To be able to sell this product of cold and darkness, you have to have something to offer,” he said.

Now, even though June, July and August are the busiest months, tourism has evened out over the seasons. In 2023, there were about 1.1 million international visitors to Iceland during the aurora months, based on departures from Keflavík Airport, according to data from Iceland’s tourist board . From April to August, there were about 1.1 million, too.

About a decade earlier , when tourism overall to Iceland was lower, there were about 336,000 departures from the main airport in colder months, and about 446,000 in the spring and summer.

The winter travelers are drawn by the lights — and the hot springs, glaciers and icy waterfalls. It’s also cheaper than the summer season.

Some try to visit volcanoes , but the country recently warned tourists to avoid the lava flows — Iceland is living in an unusually active period of seismic activity . In January, lava flowed into a small town and last week a volcano erupted with just 40 minutes’ notice near the Blue Lagoon thermal springs, one of the country’s biggest attractions.

The final attempts

Near midnight on my last night, a Sunday, I drove to the Grótta Lighthouse , a popular spot on the outskirts of Reykjavík.

A few die-hard experts had warned me off — many tourists go there because it’s darker than most of Reykjavík, but then don’t think to turn off their headlights. It was also raining, greatly diminishing my chances of seeing the lights.

But I only had three hours before I had to leave to make my predawn flight. I felt a little desperate, a little dazed. I parked, and approached two people who were sitting in the rain on a wet wall, looking at the water in the darkness. I climbed over seaweed, and introduced myself. What would it mean to them, I asked, if the lights suddenly appeared?

“It’d be a little bit like the cherry on top,” said Catherine Norburn, 29, who was visiting from England.

She and her husband were set to fly out the next morning. They had not yet seen the lights.

“We don’t have high hopes,” said her husband, Reece Norburn, 29, “but it’s now or never.”

We didn’t see the lights. And I didn’t see them later, even after pulling off the highway halfway between Reykjavík and the airport at 3:30 a.m., half convinced by a shimmery cloud.

But I did spend more time looking up at the sky. And it’s a marvel.

In New York City, where I live, the night sky blooms orange-mauve. In Iceland, the nighttime darkness is just that — darkness. Clouds roll, breaking the deep blue. Stars actually shine. Northern lights or no northern lights, it was still cosmically beautiful.

The one thing you'll want to do is the only thing not to do while driving during solar eclipse

travelling light umbrella

The 2024 solar eclipse will shroud much of the United States in darkness on Monday, leaving many people to wonder: Is it safe to drive during the celestial event?

We know Americans should wear certified eclipse glasses when looking directly at the eclipse. And millions of Americans are in the eclipse's path of totality , the moment that occurs when the moon completely blocks the sun's light from reaching us. During totality, the eclipse can be viewed with the naked eye.

The eclipse will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, but the exact time of the eclipse varies by where you are in its path. If you plan to drive during this time, you may not only have to contend with traffic , but need to take steps to stay safe.

Here's what to know about driving during the eclipse.

Where to get free solar eclipse glasses: Libraries, Warby Parker and more giving glasses away

Is it safe to drive during an eclipse?

It's safe to drive during an eclipse as long as you don't look up at the sky. AAA is telling drivers to be focused on the road if they are operating a car during the total solar eclipse.

"Anyone operating a vehicle should not be attempting to look up at the sky during the eclipse – their eyes should be on the road," said Aixa Diaz, a spokeswoman from AAA.

The automobile insurance company is advising Americans who want to safely view the total eclipse to "find a safe place to park (not on the side of a road or highway) away from other traffic and then wear your eclipse glasses," Diaz said.

Do not wear eclipse glasses while driving

It should go without saying, but authorities are also reminding people to not drive while wearing eclipse glasses .

The Missouri and Texas departments of transportation are both advising drivers to not wear eclipse glasses during the natural phenomenon and to focus on the road.

"Do not wear eclipse glasses while driving," reads a list of safety tips from the Texas department. Thousands people are expected to drive to towns along the path of totality, including Dallas, ahead of the eclipse.

Several state transportation departments  released similar warnings  ahead of the 2017 total solar eclipse. Wyoming's, for example, warned people traveling to the state about how they wouldn't be able to see the road with solar eclipse glasses on.

"When the glasses are worn, a person shouldn’t be able to see anything except the solar eclipse, which is why it is unsafe for a person to wear them when driving," the warning reads.

"Eclipse glasses are for eclipse viewing, not driving. They shouldn’t be treated like normal sunglasses," Diaz said.

New look for Umbrella Alley. Downtown Louisville attraction features 10,000 streamers

LOUISVILLE − Umbrella Alley is alive with color and style but there's a new twist.

Strewn high above the alley are 10,000 streamers, not the usual umbrellas.

DreamStream, recently installed and unveiled, is a rainbow of color that will precede the annual display of umbrellas.

Streamers dance and rustle in the wind, creating a wave-like effect among a sea of hues. Like the umbrellas, streamers also create a picturesque pattern of shadows on sunny days on the bordering brick walls.

DreamStream will be on display until mid-May. However, the streamers were lowered earlier this week due to forecasts of severe weather; the display might not go up again until this weekend.

The alley is directly off the 200 block of East Main Street near Ahh Gallery in downtown Louisville.

"Our goal has always been to have aerial art as close to 12 months a year as possible," said Rick Guiley, who serves on a committee overseeing Umbrella Alley.

Established in 2020, Umbrella Alley already draws people from inside and outside the area to visit and take photos. Downtown restaurants and businesses have benefitted, Guiley said.

"Umbrella Alley has given Louisville recognition that we have never had," he said. "People all over Ohio and other states recognize Louisville as Umbrella Alley − they're synonymous. I never would have guessed the success that we have had."

Guiley expects DreamStream to also attract people.

“We believe this unique exhibit of Umbrella Alley will bring thousands of visitors to Louisville, which has become the showcase in Ohio for aerial art to revitalize an old downtown," Guiley said.

Building and installing the new exhibit required about 250 volunteer hours from more than 25 Stark County residents.

"I can’t thank the volunteers enough," Guiley said. "It was truly a labor of love.”

"We believe in Umbrella Alley," he added. "And we believe in Louisville."

Here are five other things you should know about DreamStream.

Selfie central Umbrella Alley adding new mural to Louisville tourist attraction

1. What inspired DreamStream?

The idea for DreamStream was inspired by an even larger temporary display of streamers in Germany that commemorated the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Laurie Yeagley, another committee member, is credited with the overall concept.

"We needed something colorful and unique in the spring that could handle the wind," she said.

Jeff Kiern, also of the committee, designed the color scheme to reflect the unique bricks and surface of the alley. He also named the exhibit.

2. How was DreamStream assembled?

Thousands of streamers are connected to mesh netting, similar to the type used for soccer and volleyball.

The mesh was made to size and customized for the alley. More than 400 oversized zip ties were used.

Kierns' design was transferred onto the 19,200 mesh squares. Fellow committee member Tonda Mathie said it took more than eight hours to create diagrams identifying where each of the 10,000 streamers would be installed.

Cabling was designed by volunteers Mark Sigler and David Yeagley. Cables total 2,000 feet with 164 connection points to hold the umbrellas. An additional 320 feet of cable with an additional 80 connection points were needed to hang the streamers.

Fire retardant spray was applied to the streamers to comply with fire code. Six thousand additional streamers are in storage for replacements.

3. Streamers will be lowered so people can write messages

A date hasn't been announced yet, but sometime in April, weather dependent, the streamers will be lowered so community members can write a message of hope or thankfulness, "allowing everyone to have ownership of this display," the volunteers said in a news release.

Guiley explained the reason for the messages: "We want to give everybody the opportunity to take the memories that are important to them and the hope they have for themselves and the world."

4. Who paid for the streamers?

DreamStream has cost roughly $5,000 in materials.

Grants from Visit Canton , ArtsinStark and 2nd Friday of Louisville funded the project, along with money made from the sale of Umbrella Alley T-shirts and merchandise, Guiley said.

5. Don't worry, the umbrellas will be back

Some folks were concerned the streamers would replace the umbrellas, Mathie said. That was the reaction after photos of the new display were posted on Facebook.

"The most common question was, 'What about the umbrellas?'"

Don't worry, though. Umbrellas will be raised in late May, after the streamers are removed, she promised.

Per PBS, " Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light will trace the final four years of Cromwell’s life, completing his journey from self-made man to the most feared, influential figure of his time. Cromwell is as complex as he is unforgettable: a politician and a fixer, a diplomat and a father, a man who both defied and defined his age."

Here's everything we know about the show.

It's based on Mantel's novel of the same name.

The mirror & the light: a novel (wolf hall trilogy, 3).

The Mirror & the Light: A Novel (Wolf Hall Trilogy, 3)

Per the publisher, "The story begins in May 1536: Anne Boleyn is dead, decapitated in the space of a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As her remains are bundled into oblivion, Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The blacksmith’s son from Putney emerges from the spring’s bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry VIII, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen, Jane Seymour. Cromwell, a man with only his wits to rely on, has no great family to back him, no private army. Despite rebellion at home, traitors plotting abroad and the threat of invasion testing Henry’s regime to the breaking point, Cromwell’s robust imagination sees a new country in the mirror of the future. All of England lies at his feet, ripe for innovation and religious reform. But as fortune’s wheel turns, Cromwell’s enemies are gathering in the shadows. The inevitable question remains: how long can anyone survive under Henry’s cruel and capricious gaze?"

"Following the success of the BAFTA and Golden Globe winning original television adaptation of the first two books in Hilary Mantel’s acclaimed Wolf Hall trilogy, we are thrilled and honoured that, nine years later, we have been able re-unite Peter Kosminsky and his brilliant team, in front of and behind the camera, to bring Thomas Cromwell ‘s final chapter to the screen," Colin Callendar, the CEO of Playground, the show's production company, said in a statement . "Intimate, thrilling, and deeply moving, The Mirror and the Light shines a fresh light on the politics of power and the personal price paid by those who wield it. Cromwell’s story is as contemporary as ever – a story of loyalty and betrayal that just happens to be about people 500 years ago."

Grief Is for People by Sloane Crosley

Grief is not prescriptive. If there’s one thing you can take away from Grief Is for People , let it be that. Sloane Crosley’s new memoir is a deeply incisive and moving account of working through cumulative grief or grief overload—the kind associated with multiple losses in quick succession. Faced with a home break-in (during which she loses her family jewelry) and subsequently, the death of her friend and mentor by suicide, Crosley finds herself on a continuum of grief, during which this sequence of events that have nothing to do with each other mutate into a single event of profound stress. In fact, the title is a tongue-in-cheek reference to exactly that—the writer’s tendency to conflate her grief over her friend with the loss of her jewelry, an attempt at anthropomorphizing objects, if you will. Even in this morass of sadness and confusion, Crosley’s trademark wit, seen previously in her humorous essays, is on display—this book is both very poignant and darkly funny. And it smashes through any facile frameworks we have available for mourning. — Arati Menon , global digital director

Worry by Alexandra Tanner

The back cover of Alexandra Tanner’s Worry likens it to both Greta Gerwig’s “Frances Ha” and Seinfeld—a compelling start for a debut novel from the Brooklyn-based writer. Over a quick-reading 291 pages, the daily thoughts, anxieties, and indulgences of two sisters who are living together in New York City unfold through witty dialogue loaded with familiar pop culture references. Reading this feels a lot like hanging out with a sister, something I reflected on while carrying it to Mexico City for my little sister’s wedding. We’re hardly the same as Poppy and Jules, the two main characters, but I understand the dynamics at play here—it’s a bit like looking in a fun house mirror at times, sometimes to my horror, but always to my entertainment. — Megan Spurrell , senior editor

Funny Story by Emily Henry

If you're even slightly into romance novels, you're probably familiar with Emily Henry, a New York Times best-selling author (and Women Who Travel Power Listee ) known for her popular books like People We Meet on Vacation and Beach Read . Anticipating all the same feel-good magic in whatever Henry writes next, I couldn't wait to devour her latest novel, Funny Story . It follows a young woman named Daphne whose fiancé realizes he's in love with someone else—his childhood best friend, Petra. Daphne, now heartbroken and strapped for money, moves in with none other than Petra's ex-boyfriend, Miles. The unlikely pair of roommates, both grieving their own relationships, develop somewhat of an interesting friendship. It's humorous, playful, and has all the right ingredients for a good ole' love story. — Meaghan Kenny , associate commerce editor

Good Material by Dolly Alderton

I recently sped through Good Material , Dolly Alderton ’s second novel and fourth book, while on a trip to Mexico City . As with her previous work, the book explores themes of love, friendship, and the role of technology in our lives and relationships with a searing specificity. This story, told from the perspective of a flailing standup comedian who’s stuck in the proverbial restaurant of his former relationship, gets into the agonizing days and months following a breakup, and surfaces every embarrassing emotion that comes with it. At times, I wanted to shake the narrator silly, but I appreciated the fact that Alderton didn’t try and make him overly likable. The tone is warm, funny, and all too relatable. — Madison Flager , senior commerce editor

I’lll Just Be Five More Minutes: And Other Tales from My ADHD Brain by Emily Farris

I've been reading I'll Just Be Five More Minutes: And Other Tales from My ADHD Brain by Emily Farris , a senior commerce editor at Epicurious . I'm a longtime fan of Farris—her irreverent humor, her amazing sense of colorful design, and how she writes from the heart. She takes us on a journey through her life as experienced by someone with ADHD , and while I don't have ADHD, there are plenty of relatable tidbits (like the one about wanting to mail out those holiday cards a year late? Been there!) that make you laugh, cry, and cringe. It's not a topic talked about often and I appreciate Farris for putting it all out there. — Lia Picard , contributor

How to Be Old: Lessons in Living Boldly from the Accidental Icon by Lyn Slater

I am currently devouring Lyn Slater’s debut book, How To Be Old: Lessons in Living Boldly from the Accidental Icon, which details the decade of her 60s, how she became famous, and what spurred the reinvention taking place in her 70s. I myself have just entered into a new decade, and am about to become a mom. When I spoke to her recently about the book , I told her how much the material resonated with me. She told me that she actually wrote this book for people like me, in the midst of transition. “My message is that, instead of being fearful about being older, it's an opportunity to really take that dream that you might have put aside because of life, and making a living, and children, and really getting to a time of life where you can have that dream, if you want it.” — Mercedes Bleth , global associate director, social media

The Stone Home by Crystal Hana Kim

I’ve been reading a lot of fiction lately that deals with less widely-known parts of Asian history. Among the best of them is Kim’s riveting sophomore novel, which begins in 2011. The story opens with Eunju Oh in her Daegu, South Korea apartment, getting an unexpected visit from Narae, a woman who was raised by her childhood nemesis Sangchul Kim. Sangchul has recently died and directed Narae to Eunju to learn the truth about her origins. What follows is an account from both teenaged Eunju and Sangchul’s perspectives of their year in the Stone Home, purportedly a government-run reformatory for wayward citizens that was actually a camp where innocent civilians were kidnapped and forced to labor under grueling conditions, their wares sold abroad.

The book is tightly written and moves at a thrilling pace. You really feel for the characters and understand their motivations. Kim chronicles Eunju’s time in the camp’s kitchen with her mother, whom she calls Umma, and a disparate group of women who come to care for one another. While men usually toil in the workshops, Eunju and her friend Mina are chosen to work threading fish hooks with a group of boys that include Sangchul and his older brother, Youngchul. The main plot begins after Youngchul meets with tragedy, and Sangchul betrays his friends by becoming a brutal Keeper, a peer enforcer for the camp’s sadistic leaders. Kim’s writing is thoroughly engaging while also managing to educate readers regarding a brutal atrocity in Korea’s timeline. — Alexandra Sanidad , research director

Friends in Napa by Sheila Yasmin Marikar

I loved Sheila Marikar's debut novel Goddess Effect so much that I raved about it in last year's spring book club . So when I heard she had a juicy follow up, Friends in Napa , in the works, I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy. If you love tales of insufferable wealthy people in beautiful environs, a la Succession and The White Lotus (and who doesn't), this is the perfect premise: A group of college friends-turned-frenemies reunites in a scenic California wine country estate, where drama—and murder—ensues. After getting immediately hooked on the riveting opening scene that takes you inside the mind of a murderer, I'm now racing through the chapters brimming with grudges and grapes to figure out whodunnit. — Sarah Khan , contributor

No Judgment: On Being Critical Lauren Oyler

Fans of Lauren Oyler likely became so, as I did, because of her criticism, which is rather mean (never undeservedly!) and as a result, very funny. A follow-up to a debut novel that was received with a poetic panning of its own ( Fake Accounts, not as bad as you’ve heard), No Judgement is a collection of six essays musing largely on criticism’s very existence—how it is generally good for the culture, how apps like Goodreads in turn make it bad for the culture, and most of all criticism’s inevitability in every sphere of human behavior. The collection’s introduction opens with a modicum of truth: That when somebody tells you, “No judgement,” as a way to encourage honesty or reward it, that somebody is lying. They are not not judging you, but rather keeping said judgement to themselves. Quite simply, judgement is as human as it is involuntary. There’s also a good essay about living in Berlin that everybody should read, if nothing else. That’s the beauty of a book of essays. — Charlie Hobbs , associate editor

Headshot by Rita Bullwinkle

If you've been following Caitlin Clark's historic college basketball career at the University of Iowa, then you know women's sports are really, truly, finally having a moment. But what motivates girls to compete? That’s a central question in Rita Bullwinkle’s debut novel Headshot , which follows eight teenagers as they face off in a single-elimination boxing tournament. Each chapter is a bout between two young women, with an emphasis on what’s going on inside their heads as they fight. I’m only a few chapters in, but already this book is about so much more than athletics—it’s an exploration of girlhood, insecurity, and grit that, even if you didn’t grow up playing sports, you’ll find relatable and compelling. — Sarah Kuta , contributor

Fruit of the Dead by Rachel Lyon

Every now and then, a book description with some of my most niche interests and lived experiences make me really excited to crack it open: This one got me with camp counselorhood, a visit to a billionaire's remote private island , and an allegory for the Greek myth of Persephone and Demeter. (The goddess duo, legend has it, went toe to toe with Hades in a parable about the depth of mother-daughter connection.) It doesn't spoil any plot to say that author Rachel Lyon's modern Persephone is children’s sleep-away camp employee Cory, who soon introduces us to our Hades (the predatory father of a camper) and our Demeter (mother Emer), whose adjacent perspective of the plot is jumped to in nearly every other chapter for a she-said/she-said format.

The result makes for a page-turning, sometimes deus-ex-machina story; one that interweaves teenage naivety, motherly intuition, and male privilege for a fast-moving tale that might call into question your own hard lines on topics like addiction, consent, and exploitation. (Readers should know there's a trigger warning for sexual violence, although the topic is explored thoughtfully, and through the eyes of both jaded single mother and young, lost daughter.) The joining force between the two points of view is the villain, whose descriptions and character development are Cat Person -level from the beginning. My only wish is that mother Emer's character was more fully brought into sharper focus by the end of the book—but with so much going on between the perspective-jumping chapters and a climactic ending, you'll find yourself gobbling up the pages. — Shannon McMahon , destinations editor

Piglet by Lottie Hazell

Food isn’t an afterthought in this scrumptious novel, it’s one of (if not the ) main characters. Fittingly, I devoured it in a single sitting. Author Lottie Hazell has a creative writing PhD—her research considers food writing in twenty-first century fiction—and her expertise on the matter is immediately clear in the razor-sharp prose, spot-on character development, and propulsive plot. From the very first chapter, you know Piglet’s fiancé Kit has betrayed her somehow, but it’s not clear exactly what he did. Not knowing somehow makes it even more salacious; the tension becomes not the secret itself, but how it is so closely kept from everyone in the book—including the reader. (I won’t give away when/if you do eventually find out what happened.) As the plot thickens, you feel the weight of Kit’s unknown deed build up in your chest, screaming to be released, but wondering alongside Piglet if that would really make you feel any better. The result is a suspenseful, binge-worthy read that dives deep into womens’ appetites, in all its many forms. — Hannah Towey , associate editor, transportation and travel news

The Limits by Nell Freudenberger

I read this on a trip to Cusco, Peru —so, lightyears away from Tahiti and New York , the two settings for this beautiful book (also, thankfully, years later than the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic in which it takes place). Following the lives of a coral researcher in French Polynesia , her ex-husband who is a doctor in New York City, and their daughter who moves between the two of them with all of her teenage dramas, this story meditates on love, family, identity, and complex dynamics of class and colonization in both destinations. It inspired me to learn more about Tahitian culture (and convinced me I need to visit ASAP), and kept me riveted from start to finish. —M.S.

Death Valley by Melissa Broder

At first glance, I had my apprehensions about beginning Melissa Broder’s Death Valley —as it is both fiction, and touches upon grief (I sway more towards non-fiction, and away from, well, grief). Immediately, though, Broder proves quirky and captivating—permitting us to accompany a woman’s solo expedition to California on a quest to reprieve the weight of loss of both her husband and father. Despite the Valley’s Best Western, though, the tale is opposite from bleak. Together, we head into a nearby desert trail and begin this existential, erotic, and treacherously real journey of self-discovery and resilience in the wake of “pending” grief. Whether conversing with unassuming cacti or vividly stark memories of her loved ones, Broder paints this hilarious fever dream, while still conveying a stark, tangible sense of what it means to be alive. All that to say, it’s still a great beach read. —J.C.
