Description

In 1997, the biggest Labour victory in history swept England, ending eighteen years of Conservative government. Prime Minister Tony Blair — young, charismatic and complex — shaped the nation profoundly in the ten years that followed. From his work in Northern Ireland to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, few of his decisions were free from scrutiny and debate. Alternately beloved and reviled, he was an international figure to a degree matched by few British leaders — a role he continues in to this day through the Tony Blair Faith Foundation and his work in the Middle East. Now, for the first time, we see the fascinating journey and difficult choices of the prime minister through his own eyes. Grippingly candid and deeply intimate, A Journey is a must-read political memoir, full of startling insights into a host of world leaders, including George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. It is also a book that delves deeply and profoundly into what it means to be in a position of great power today, and its emotional and personal toll....

Review of A Journey: My Political Life by Tony Blair

  • Anthony King

American readers need to know that British politicians are inveterate memoir-writers. On leaving office, prime ministers write their memoirs, but so do chancellors of the exchequer, foreign secretaries, and politicians far less significant than that. British publishers clearly reckon that, even if the sales of most such volumes are unlikely to be enormous, the village-like quality of British political life means that a fair number of copies will be bought and read by the author’s fellow politicians, civil servants, and other citizens whom the politician in question will have encountered in the course of a long working life.

Alastair Campbell on why politics matters to children

Tony blair’s former spokesman tells lisa salmon politics touches every part of young people’s lives and he’s keen to get them involved..

Explaining politics to kids: Alastair Campbell

Politics isn’t usually something most children and young people enjoy, or even understand. But Alastair Campbell is on a mission to change that.

Campbell, who was former prime minister Tony Blair’s spokesman in the late Nineties and early 2000s, believes young people have become so disengaged with politics that the future of democracy could be at risk.

He says: “I worry that the cynicism about politics is so deep that unless we challenge it, I think we’ve got a problem with the future of democracy, I really do. We have a very cynical and apathetic electorate turning away from politics, and unless we reverse that trend with the younger generations, I think democracy’s in peril.

“The key to this is political education – in people taking politics more seriously, understanding why it matters, and for younger people to understand that it can be really good fun.”

PropertyPal embarks on the next chapter of its journey

Campbell, 67, is aware persuading children and young people that politics is fun could be a hard nut to crack, but he’s using his exceptional political knowledge to convince them in his two new books – Why Politics Matters, which is aimed at primary school-aged children, and Alastair Campbell Talks Politics, for older children and young adults.

Alastair Campbell Talks Politics

The publication of both books has been brought forward so they’re available by the General Election.

But how do you make a book about politics fun and interesting for a child?

Speaking from France, where he says he’s been “dragged into the election”, Campbell explains: “First of all, I don’t talk down to them. How I’ve made the teenagers’ book, I hope, interesting is that everything’s based on a Q&A – what is politics, why should we care about politics, what skills do you need to be a politician? I’ve tried to make it very clear, very simple.”

But although the books are aimed at children and young people, Campbell suspects adults might gain some interesting political knowledge by reading them too.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Farshore Books (@farshorebooks)

“When it was first announced,” he recalls, “I got a message from a Labour MP who’s been there a long time who said ‘I’ve read that you’ve written another book and this one’s going to explain how politics and Parliament works – can you send it to me, because I still haven’t got a ******* clue’!

“I think adults will read it. I’ve made it very neutral – there’s no ‘Vote Labour’ in it, it’s very politically neutral. But I hope parents think children do need to know about politics, and maybe this will help them.”

He believes that an important way to get children and young people engaged with politics is to help them understand how it relates to them and their day-to-day lives.

“I’ve been in dozens and dozens of schools in the last few years, and my sense is they get properly engaged when you can explain to them how it relates to their lives,” he says.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Alastair Campbell (@alastaircampbell)

He uses the example of the recent teachers’ strike to illustrate his point – he says when he’s asked them about it, children will often have strong opinions about the strike which will spark a debate. “And then the next time any of them says they’re not interested in politics, I’ll say, ‘Were you interested in the debate about your teachers going on strike? Because that’s politics’.

“That’s how I try to make it relevant.”

He continues: “They ask some great questions – one that really threw me today was ‘Which person in all the world right now would you like to sit down and talk about politics with?’. I was probably over-influenced by the fact that they were young people, but I ended up saying Taylor Swift, because I want to know if she’s aware of how much political power she has by being such a phenomenon.

“When I go into schools, there’s way more awareness than they get credit for. They’ve got a take on it all.”

A father of three grown-up children himself, Campbell is well aware that young people are more likely to not bother to vote in elections – a 2022 UK parliament  report  said 60% of 18-25 year olds think politicians don’t care, and only 54% of young people aged 18-24 voted in the 2019 election, the lowest of any age group.

But he wholeheartedly agrees with Sir Keir Starmer’s belief that the voting age should be reduced to 16.

“I’m totally in favour of it,” he declares, “and I have been for a long time. It’s one of the few things Tony Blair and I disagree about. I support lowering the voting age – I think one of the best things about the Scottish independence referendum was that 16 and 17-year-olds could vote, and it changed the nature of the debate.

“I would also back compulsory voting, and I think there should be proper political education in all schools, including primary schools. I think kids can cope with that.”

He stresses that when they’re old enough to vote it’s important that young people use their vote, no matter how disenchanted with politics they are.

“What I would say to young people is one of the reasons you’re probably cynical about politics is because politicians spend too much time worrying about older people, and one of the reasons is because they know older people vote.

“But by not voting, young people are sending the message ‘carry on as usual’, so they’re actually becoming part of the problem.

“If politicians knew every young person was going to vote, it would probably change the nature of the debate. Sunak wouldn’t have kicked off with national service and pensions, he’d have kicked off with something to do with mental health or education or whatever.

“Everything young people care about has politics attached to it. They can make a difference, their voice does count.”

Addressing the potential young readers of his books, he adds: “When I was in primary school, I didn’t have a clue what politics was. If you’d told me I would work in 10 Downing Street, and be involved in big decisions that would change the country and the world, I’d have wondered what planet you were from.

“But that happened. It could happen to you too. In fact, you could even become prime minister. Someone has to do it – why not you?”

Why Anthony Fauci approaches every trip to the White House as if it's his last

Dave Davies

WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 03: Dr. Anthony Fauci, former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, testifies before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic at the Rayburn House Office Building on June 03, 2024 in Washington, DC. The Subcommittee is holding a hearing on the findings from a fifteen month Republican-led probe of former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci and the COVID-19 pandemic's origins. For much of the past four years, Dr. Anthony Fauci has been the public face of the government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic — a status that garnered him gratitude from some, and condemnation from others.

For Fauci, speaking what he calls the “inconvenient truth” is part of the job. He spent 38 years heading up the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, during which time he advised seven presidents on various diseases, including AIDS , Ebola , SARS and COVID-19.

Fauci still recalls the advice he received when he first went to the White House to meet President Reagan: A colleague told him to pretend each visit to the West Wing would be his last.

Long Before COVID-19, Dr. Anthony Fauci 'Changed Medicine In America Forever'

Shots - Health News

Long before covid-19, dr. anthony fauci 'changed medicine in america forever'.

“And what he meant is, you should say to yourself that I might have to say something either to the president or to the president's advisers … they may not like to hear,” Fauci explains. “And then that might lead to your not getting asked back again. But that's OK, because you've got to stick with always telling the truth to the best of your capability.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Fauci clashed repeatedly with President Trump. "He really wanted, understandably, the outbreak to essentially go away," Fauci says of Trump. "So he started to say things that were just not true."

FDA Warns Against Wide Use Of The Drugs Trump Hailed As 'Game Changers'

Coronavirus Updates

Fda warns against wide use of the drugs trump hailed as 'game changers'.

Fauci says Trump downplayed the seriousness of the virus, refused to wear a mask and claimed (falsely) that hydroxychloroquine offered protection against COVID-19. "And [that] was the beginning of a situation that put me at odds, not only with the president, but more intensively with his staff," Fauci says. "But ... there was no turning back. I could not give false information or sanction false information for the American public."

Fauci retired from the NIH in 2022. In his new memoir, On Call: A Doctor’s Journey in Public Service , he looks back on the COVID-19 pandemic and reflects on decades of managing public health crises.

Interview highlights

On appearing before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic to answer questions about the pandemic response

Dr. David Morens, a former top adviser to Dr. Anthony Fauci, appears during a House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic hearing on Capitol Hill.

As Republicans probe COVID’s origins, some see an attack on science; others say it’s long overdue

If you look at the hearing itself it, unfortunately, is a very compelling reflection of the divisiveness in our country. I mean, the purpose of hearings, or at least the proposed purpose of the hearing, was to figure out how we can do better to help prepare us and respond to the inevitability of another pandemic, which almost certainly will occur. But if you listened in to that hearing … on the Republican side was a vitriolic ad hominem and a distortion of facts, quite frankly. As opposed to trying to really get down to how we can do better in the future. It was just attacks about things that were not founded in reality.

On his interactions with President Trump concerning COVID-19

Trump Rails Against 'Fauci And These Idiots' In Campaign Call

Trump Rails Against 'Fauci And These Idiots' In Campaign Call

He is a very complicated figure. We had a very interesting relationship. ... I don't know whether it was the fact that he recognized me as kind of a fellow New Yorker, but he always felt that he wanted to maintain a good relationship with me. And even when he would come in and start saying, "Why are you saying these things? You got to be more positive. You got to be more positive." And he would get angry with me. But then at the end of it, he would always say, "We're OK, aren't we? I mean, we're good. Things are OK," because he didn't want to leave the conversation thinking that we were at odds with each other, even though many in his staff at the time were overtly at odds with me, particularly the communication people. ... So it was a complicated issue. There were times when you think he was very favorably disposed, and then he would get angry at some of the things that I was saying, even though they were absolutely the truth.

On reading reports of a mysterious illness afflicting gay men in 1981 (which later became known as AIDS)

I knew I was dealing with a brand new disease. ... The thing that got me goosebumps is that this was totally brand new and it was deadly, because the young men we were seeing, they were so far advanced in their disease before they came to the attention of the medical care system, that the mortality looked like it was approaching 100%. So that, you know, spurred me on to ... totally change the direction of my career, to devote myself to the study of what was, at the time, almost exclusively young gay men with this devastating, mysterious and deadly disease, which we ultimately, a year or so later, gave the name of AIDS to.

On the trauma of caring for patients with AIDS in the early years of the epidemic

All of a sudden I was taking care of people who were desperately ill, mostly young gay men who I had a great deal of empathy for. And what we were doing was metaphorically like putting Band-Aids on hemorrhages, because we didn't know what the etiology was until three years later. We had no therapy until several, several years later. And although we were trained to be healers in medicine, we were healing no one and virtually all of our patients were dying. …

Many of my colleagues who were really in the trenches back then, before we had therapy, really have some degree of post-traumatic stress. I describe in the memoir some very, very devastating experiences that you have with patients that you become attached to who you try your very, very best to help them. ... It was a very painful experience.

On working with President George W. Bush on the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which aimed to combat the global HIV/AIDS crisis

Goats and Soda

George w. bush's anti-hiv program is hailed as 'amazing' — and still crucial at 20.

The president, to his great credit, called me into the Oval Office and said we have a moral obligation to not allow people to die of a preventable and treatable disease merely because of the fact [of] where they were born, in a poor country, and that was at a time when we had now developed drugs that were absolutely saving the lives of persons with HIV, having them go on to essentially a normal lifespan here in the United States, in the developed world. So he sent me to Africa to try and figure out the feasibility and accountability and the possibility of getting a program that could prevent and treat and care for people with HIV. And I worked for months and months on it after coming back from Africa, because I was convinced it could be done, because I felt very strongly that this disparity of accessibility of drugs between the developed and developing world was just unconscionable. Luckily, the president of the United States, in the form of George W. Bush, felt that way. And we put together the PEPFAR program. ... We spent $100 billion in 50 countries and it has saved 25 million lives, which I think is an amazing example of what presidential leadership can do.
