The Dead Milkmen are a punk band hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States that formed in 1983. The band have released ten studio albums since their debut in 1985, and are most known for their sardonic parodies of punk rock culture, and their 1988 breakthrough single “Punk Rock Girl”.

The satirical punk band began life as the home recording project of singer and guitarist Joe Genaro, and a friend of his from school called Garth. The pair came up with a fictional punk band called The Dead Milkmen, and began writing and recording cassette tapes of songs that were said to be written by this conceptual rock band. The project never really left Genaro’s bedroom but the duo wrote and recorded constantly until they reached college age, giving the budding guitarist an abundance of experience in writing tongue in cheek lyrics and jangly, three chord punk rock. However while Genaro left home to attend Philadelphia’s Temple University, Garth joined the United States Air Force. For the time being, The Dead Milkmen were, for lack of a better word, dead.

However, as many young musicians will tell you, there’s nowhere quite like university to find other young musicians, and through mutual friends Genaro met the future rhythm section of the band. Genaro started rehearsing with Dave Schulthise on the bass guitar and Dean Sabatino on the drums in 1981, and it took the trio a while to commit to it. They couldn’t get the band’s singer Rodney Linderman to commit to fronting the band until mere weeks before their first show in 1983, and after that the band immediately started making up for lost time. They played live all over the Philadelphia punk scene, were soon touring nationally and by 1985 they had signed to Restless Records, where they released their first album “Big Lizard In My Backyard”, the same year.

Since then the band have become one of the most beloved cult acts in punk rock, and for a genre that’s basically made up of them, that’s saying a lot. The group saw an influx of attention in 1987 when Jim Walewander, a Major League Baseball player, started talking the band up as his favourite band. The group followed this up with 1988’s “Beezlebubba” and its lead single “Punk Rock Girl”, one of the most deathless hits in American punk rock. Hilariously enough, the band secured a record deal that wasn’t just with a major label; it was with Hollywood Records, a label owned by the Walt Disney Company. Any crossover appeal that the label thought the band might have went to waste and they were soon dropped from it.

Not so hilariously, the band broke up in 1994 due to their frustration with music industry machinations and Dave Schulthise’s tendinitis, an affliction that made performing unbearably painful for him. Tragically, he committed suicide a decade after the band originally split in 2004, just as reunion talks were emerging. The rest of the group reconvened for a couple of benefit concerts in his memory and got back together full time in 2008, releasing two of their most acclaimed records 2008’s “The King In Yellow”, and 2014’s “Pretty Music For Pretty People”. Clearly The Dead Milkmen are a band that are far more vital and important than their parody-punk exterior suggests, look a little deeper and you’ll find a band truly worth following. Highly recommended.

Live reviews

The Dead Milkmen put on a kind of concert that is full of energy and downright fun. They bring the exhilaration to their music by playing in a fast paced, rambunctious way, but their lighthearted antics and carefree approach to performance makes the audience have a good time. Although The Dead Milkmen were disbanded for quite some time, they recently regrouped in 2008 to the glee of their fans and have been going strong ever since their reformation. Their music at times is sloppy, but this is just part of their style and is a part of their music that goes against formulaic conventions and makes their songs interesting. In songs like “Beach Song” they start off the music in a very melodic and catchy format, but later in the song they come in with obnoxious yelling and sporadic guitar rhythms and sing about how they have no desire to spend their summer like everyone else. Their lyrics are often ridiculous and hysterical, perfectly embracing the punk style of teenage angst and reveling in disobedience and strong-will.

The Dead Milkmen still perform with the childish frivolity that makes them so loveable and fresh. Lead singer, Rodney Linderman, runs around stage yelling his punk rock songs into the microphone and inciting all of his fans to jump into the fun. During live performances they are likely to play songs encompassing most of their albums including their hit song, “Punk Rock Girl”. They will also probably be playing songs from their latest album release, “The King in Yellow”.

The Dead Milkmen’s blend of punk and pop music mixed in with a hint of a country vibe makes their sound unique and engaging. Their fun attitude and strong passion to create energetic music makes their show a must see.

Punk band The Dead Milkmen to play free concert at Hamtramck Labor Day Festival

the dead milkmen tour 2023

Punk band The Dead Milkmen will make a long-awaited return to metro Detroit during Labor Day weekend, when they’ll headline the Hamtramck Labor Day Festival at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 3.

The beloved Philadelphia band arrives to metro Detroit hot off the June release of “Quaker City Quiet Pills,” their first new album in nearly a decade. Original members Joseph Genaro (guitar, vocals, keyboards), Rodney Linderman (vocals, keyboards, tin whistle) and Dean Sabatino (drums, percussion, vocals) are still in action, along with bassist Dan Stevens, who joined in 2004 following the death of original bass player Dave Schulthise.

With tracks like “ Grandpa’s Not a Racist (He Just Voted for One) ,” the Milkmens’ famed, acerbic sense of humor roars back in peak form on the album. PunkNews.org declared , “The new LP embraces the yuks side while amplifying their other aspects of the band — namely their socio-political bend and their straight up weirdness. To that end, QCQP is the band’s tightest and sharpest LP in a long time … and it’s really good, too.”

The band announced the Hamtramck gig on its Facebook page Thursday morning, generating dozens of enthusiastic comments and more than 50 shares.

The Hamtramck Labor Day Festival runs Saturday, Sept. 2 through Monday, Sept. 4, with live entertainment on two stages from 1:30 to 10 p.m. The festival also includes rides, food vendors, canoe races, a parade and live wrestling. It takes place along Joseph Campau Avenue and is free to attend every year. For more information about the festival, visit www.hamtownfest.com .

The Dead Milkmen make a triumphant return with their new single, a spirited cover of Heaven 17’s classic anti-fascism anthem “(We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang". Dead Milkmen debut “Grandpa’s Not A Racist (He Just Voted For One)” off upcoming album

The Dead Milkmen are back with their first new album in nearly a decade — Quaker City Quiet Pills — and they’ve just debuted lead-off single “Grandpa’s Not A Racist (He Just Voted For One),” a song the band describes as mocking “the mental acrobatics of defending a Trump-loving grandparent.”

The 13-track album will be released June 9 via The Giving Groove , a record label with a charitable giving model that will allow the Milkmen to donate the label’s proceeds of album revenue to Rock the Future , a nonprofit organization that “equips Philadelphia youth with life skills to support current and lifelong well-being through free, student-driven music programs.”

Quaker City Quiet Pills can be pre-ordered now via Amazon.com .

The new album is the first since 2014’s Pretty Music For Pretty People from the punk jokesters, and it touches on everything from BDSM to astral projection to white supremacists to indecisive takeout customers (“I’m making fun of myself there — I get angry at everything,” Rodney Anonymous says of the latter, the subject of “How Do You Even Manage to Exist”).

Below, check out the new single, and the full tracklist and artwork for the upcoming album.

MILKFEST ‘25

A celebration of the British blues scene, old & new IN SUPPORT OF THE BRAIN TUMOUR CHARITY Some of the biggest names on the UK Blues scene are coming together in a special one-day festival to celebrate the history of British Blues and raise money for charity. The legendary Dr Feelgood, Paul Jones, Mollie Marriott  and many others will be performing at the Indigo at The O2 on Sunday 23rd February next year, all to raise money for the Brain Tumour Charity. The concert is the idea of UK blues band The Milk Men, with Manfred Mann legend Paul Jones compering the event, as well as performing. Also on the bill will be UK Top 10 albums act When Rivers Meet  and the Cinelli Brothers . Hosts The Milk Men will open the Festival. Additionally UK vocal royalty Jo Harman  will come with some special guests, to perform an exclusive tribute to the women in UK blues (and soul and more). More names and surprise guests will be added to the bill. Milk Men guitarist and event organiser Adam Norsworthy said “The British Blues scene is very healthy and vibrant at the moment. We want to celebrate the music in all its different forms by bringing together some of the best acts we have seen and played with over the years. Brain Tumour funding is criminally low for a disease which is tragically taking more lives – many of them under 40. We are keen to raise awareness of this issue at the same time as celebrating this wonderful music”. Claire Howells from the Brain Tumour Charity added: “Some incredible performers are throwing their musical weight behind Milkfest ‘25 next February and we’re extremely grateful for their ongoing support. It will be a fantastic celebration of the UK blues scene. Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of the under 40s and, unlike other cancers, survival rates have not improved over the last 40 years. We are leading the way in changing this. Through the efforts of all those working towards Milkfest we can change these shocking statistics in the future and bring hope to the thousands of people who are diagnosed with a brain tumour every year. A huge thank you from all of us.” Richard Dunning from the UK Blues Federation said: “Once again the UK blues community comes together to show their commitment to doing good. The UK Blues Federation are delighted to be involved in this event and for such a worthy cause.” Every two hours someone in the UK is diagnosed with a brain tumour. Brain tumours continue to kill more children and people under 40 than any other cancer, yet brain tumour research represents just 1.37% of national spend on cancer. The Milk Men

THE MILK MEN ARE ONE THE MOST POPULAR AND ACCLAIMED BLUES ROCK BANDS IN THE UK. Nominated for five UK Blues Awards and British Blues Challenge finalists, and with a Number 1 blues single and album to their name, they have earned a reputation as the one of the most dynamic and enjoyable live bands on the circuit. Their five albums of original material have seen them top both the Amazon and iTunes charts and won them ‘Best Album’ nominations, and their live shows are renowned for their electric energy and joyous sense of fun. The Milk Men are a band made up from the cream of British R’n’B talent and pedigree. With former Pirate Mike Roberts on drums, Lloyd Green (son of guitar legend Mick Green) on bass guitar, husky blues singer Jamie Smy on vocals, the band is rounded off on guitar by Adam Norsworthy, also known for his work with blues-scene mainstays Mustangs. The band draws its influences from a wide range of classic bands from Dr Feelgood to Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC to Stevie Wonder. Their original music is classic blues rock, but always played with attack, energy, melody and a sense of fun. The band has released five hugely-acclaimed albums of original material, and their latest Holy Cow! has seen the band cement its reputation as one of the UK’s premier keepers of the British Blues Rock flame when the first single from the album, One Man Band, went straight to Number 1 on the iTunes blues chart. The album itself then went on to top both the Amzon and iTunes blues album charts. The album's reviews were unanimous in their praise, with many calling it "a near-perfect" album. The band’s third album Deliverance reached number 9 on the Amazon Top 10 Blues Chart (whilst also making the overall Top 40). The band has headlined major blues festivals all over the UK including the prestigious Great British Rock & Blues Festival in Skegness. A year later they were nominated for Best Band, Best Album and Best Vocalist. In January 2023 the band was nominated for two UK Blues Awards – Emerging Talent and Best Blues Band. In September 2023 they were one of the five bands chosen to compete in the prestigious UK Blues Challenge. As well as Skegness, they have graced the main stages of all the UK's biggest Blues Festivals including Colne, Upton, Alfold, Carlisle, Blackpool, Swanage and many more. Check the band’s gig guide to see when they are playing near you, and get your delivery of full phat, gold-topped blues rock.
