9 Best African Safari Lodges for Families

Can you imagine waking up to a brilliant sunrise over the savannah before heading out on a real African safari? Africa is a beautiful and diverse continent, and choices abound when it comes to game-viewing destinations for families.

If planning a trip there, you’ll want to select a location with easy access (close to an airport) and facilities designed with children in mind. You’ll want to stay in a Malaria-free region, too, so that your family doesn’t need to take preventative medication. You’ll want to confirm any age requirements before booking your safari accommodations, as well, since many lodges set an age limit on game drives. Still, many offer kids’ programs with age-appropriate activities so your little ones can get the most out of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

1. Madikwe Safari Lodge

Located in the Malaria-free Madikwe Reserve in the North West Province of South Africa, Madikwe Safari Lodge gets top ratings from families for the accommodations and age-appropriate introductions to the African bush. The lodge also welcomes children as young as 2 years old.

Book one of two spacious family suites in the Lelapa Lodge that can accommodate up to two children under the ages of 10. The suites even have private pools that are covered with a safety net when you’re not using them.

Many of the lodge employees have children themselves so they know what kids like. But, the lodge will also take your kids’ food preferences into account. Just let them know what works best for your family and the staff will do their best to accommodate.

“Adult” safaris in open vehicles are available for those ages 6 and older, while “Family” safari drives—also in open vehicles—can accommodate children between the ages of 2 and 6. There are also a ton of fun activities for kids, like Bug CSI with a field ranger; painting and coloring; making pizzas in the lodge’s new pizza oven at the boma; impromptu soccer games; and viewing the night sky. Best of all, Madikwe Safari Lodge doesn’t charge for children 6 years or younger.

2. Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

Family safari vacations are an expensive proposition and the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is a no budget option. However, it’s a fabulous destination in Tanzania that is ideal for families with deep pockets. The lodge and its 77 guest rooms are tucked into the plains of the Central Serengeti.

East Africa is home to places your kids have read about in school—Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Victoria. The Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is located in the homelands of the Maasai people. Known originally as warriors, the indigenous population now survives as craftsman, farmers and ranchers. They wear distinctive brightly colored traditional clothing.

Most impressively, this lodge is smack dab in the middle of the path of the annual Great Migration of millions of animals, including wildebeests, antelopes and zebras; it takes place between July and September. You’ll also have no trouble viewing the Big Five here.

In addition to the Four Seasons’ top-notch service, families can take advantage of the Discovery Centre. It’s the gathering place where guests learn about the Maasai people and Africa’s history, and take part in programs that support local schools and wildlife conservation.

Finally, the Kijana Club is open to kids ages 8 to 17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Here, children can work on arts and crafts projects, take part in environmental programs, learn about the animals of the Serengeti, or simple enjoy some downtime playing videogames or watching a movie. This is a nice option in case your kids get tired and don’t want to go on every single game drive during their stay.

3. Camp Jabulani

Magic happens every day at Camp Jabulani , located nearKruger National Park in South Africa’s Kapama Game Reserve. Here, your family will meet a herd of very special elephants that live on the property.

In 1997, a 4-month-old elephant was found abandoned. He was taken to the nearby Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, where he was hand-reared and named Jabulani. Later, in 2002, HESC launched a rescue mission for a dozen Zimbabwean elephants whose lives swung in the balance when they were tagged for meat after the war. When the elephants arrived in South Africa, it was clear that Jabulani would become part of their family. Camp Jabulani was created as both a home for the elephants and a place were visitors could come to spend time with them. Fifteen elephants now reside on the property.

This is a high-end Relais & Chateaux property, and staying at this all-inclusive lodge doesn’t come cheap. But the elephant-back safaris and time spent interacting with the herd is priceless. Kids must be 12 years or older to stay at the main lodge.

A few days at Camp Jabulani’s Zindoga Presidential Villa is a must for families who can afford it. This is a camp-within-a-camp, and includes two spacious suites connected by a living and dining area. There’s also a private heated plunge pool and roomy wooden deck for game viewing. You’ll have your own safari team, including a ranger (and private 4×4 vehicle), and a chef and butler. Children of any age are welcome at Zindoga.

Young guests are also invited to take part in the camp’s excellent children’s program, Team Tusker. Activities include storytelling, dress-up parties, arts and crafts projects, tracking tutorials, bird watching and bug catching, as well as survival basics.

4. Giraffe Manor

While not exactly a game lodge, Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, Kenya, is an incredibly child-friendly small hotel that is home to a herd of very playful Rothschild giraffe. You can even hand feed them at the kitchen table or at the front door of the hotel, which was originally built to resemble a Scottish hunting camp.

There are 10 bedrooms here, along with two suites with direct access to the courtyard, ideal for families. Rates are all-inclusive and even include transportation to and from the airport, along with admission to the AFEW (African Fund for Endangered Wildlife) Giraffe Centre on property. Children of all ages are welcome.

The hotel is just outside Nairobi and is surrounded by forest with views of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the south. The resort’s giraffe population shares its home with many different types of birds, warthogs and even the rare bushbuck.

5. King’s Camp

King’s Camp is one of the best-kept secrets when it comes to affordable luxury while on safari in South Africa. Located in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, this is one of the only places in the world where you can see rare white lions in the wild. The “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, Cape buffalo and black rhinoceros) and many other species are spotted here, pretty much on a daily basis.

This camp, which accepts children 6 years and older, harkens back to Colonial days and strikes the right balance of elegance and comfort. You can book one of 11 standalone thatched-roof bungalows, or Waterbuck Private Camp, a four-bedroom villa that comes with its own safari vehicle, ranger, butler and chef. The camp is roomy enough for a family of eight and is situated on a dry riverbank that offers fantastic game viewing. In-room decor includes beautiful and functional mosquito nets, claw-footed tubs, indoor and outdoor showers and a private patio decked out with a hammock. The rangers, trackers, camp managers, chef and staff create a family-like environment, and guests feel welcome the moment they arrive.

An on-property watering hole draws the attention of animals all day long, and guests either relax by the camp’s pool or in the shade of the thatched viewing deck to watch the elephants and impala stop for a drink or dip.

6. Luangwa Safari House

Here’s an option for reticent safari-goers: a private house in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park that offers the comforts of home. Luangwa Safari House , one of the accommodations offered by Robin Pope Safaris, can comfortably house up to eight people in four bedrooms and a spacious dining/living area. A chef, house manager and private guide (and vehicle) are all at your disposal. Meals and activities are carefully matched to your family’s interests, too.

There’s also a solid children’s program that extends from game drives to guided nature walks to trips to the Kawaza Village School and Chimpembele Wildlife Education Center. Back at the camp, kids can help collect eggs from the hen house and bake cookies in the kitchen with the chef. Children age 7 and up are welcome at Luangwa Safari House.

7. Richard’s Camp

In southwestern Kenya, look no further than family-owned and operated Richard’s Camp, where you’ll find traditional tented accommodations near the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Forest Camp sits on the edge of a riverine forest with grass plains stretching away from it. This means game drives easily sight elephants, big cats and herbivores like zebra and impala that graze the plains each day.

Six tented suites are available with either twin or double beds, and extra beds can be brought in for families sharing accommodations. The tents operate via solar power and offer 24-hour light, heated showers and flushing toilets. Meals are enjoyed outdoors or in the camp’s sitting area in front of a roaring fire. There is also a private camp on the property that can accommodate up to 10 individuals; this is ideal for families who want complete privacy. There are also additional lodgings at River Camp located about a half-hour away.

Game drives and escorted bush walks are the core of the experience here, but you can also go on a day trip to nearby Lake Victoria, visit a Maasai village, go on a hot air balloon safari, or flight-see over the gorgeous Masai Mara. The camp’s owners are raising their own child right on the property and can expertly answer questions about age-appropriate safari activities.

8. &Beyond’s WILDchild Program & Family Suites

&Beyond is an African safari specialist offering accommodations throughout southern and East Africa. The company recently devised its WILDchild program that’s available at all lodges. Rangers trained in working with children keep kids engaged throughout their vacation with special programs about wildlife, conservation, and African culture.

The company also installed new family suites at select lodges in South Africa and Tanzania. &Beyond recommends many lodges for families, including Kirkman’s Kamp, Phinda Zuka Lodge, Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, and others.

&Beyond Kirkman’s Kamp is a favorite with families due to its location in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve next to Kruger National Park. It’s an easy 90-minute charter flight from Johannesburg and yet the animal viewing is exquisite. That’s because there are no boundary fences between the Reserve and National Park. Animals—and game drive participants—roam across that invisible line. It’s not unusual to see leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo, and rhino here. This area also allows off-road driving so your guide will get you as close to the wildlife as possible.

Photo Courtesy of Shamwari Riverdene Lodge

9. Shamwari Riverdene Lodge

The Riverdene Lodge in the Shamwari Game Reserve in South Africa’s Eastern Cape is an ideal spot for your family’s first safari adventure. Located in Port Elizabeth, in a Malaria-free area, the lodges here—Riverdene in particular—happily welcome families with children as young as 4 (although kids must be older in order to go on a game drive).

There is so much to do here beyond normal game drives, including visits to the Born Free Foundation Big Cat Rescue Center that houses lions and leopard that have been saved from circuses and zoos, and the Shamwari Wildlife Hospital that nurses wounded wild animals back to health before releasing them back into the wild.

Riverdene Lodge features nine interconnecting, air-conditioned rooms, satellite television, a lounge area, private balconies leading to the garden and BBQ area, and a swimming pool. An onsite children’s coordinator is on hand to suggest activities custom-tailored for your family’s unique interests.

The 10 Best Safari Lodges in Africa in 2022

The best safari lodges, according to Travel + Leisure readers, go beyond the traditional game drive with a wide range of cultural experiences.

safari lodges for families

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite safari lodges in Africa.

For Travel + Leisure readers, the best safari lodges in Africa aren't necessarily traditional safari properties — though plenty of those did make this list. Take, for example, Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge — a luxurious base for tracking mountain gorillas in the cloud forest of Rwanda. It seems that this once-in-a-lifetime experience elevated guests' memories beyond those of Big Five safaris: the word amazing appears repeatedly in Bisate reviews.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

This year's World's Best list reveals a growing interest in nontraditional safaris. In addition to Bisate at the top spot, there's another Rwandan lodge, One&Only Nyungwe House (No. 3), where the highlights are tracking chimpanzees, bird-watching, and visiting a tea plantation. "A gorgeous property in an incredible location," said one voter. And there's a second gorilla-tracking property on the list: Bwindi Lodge (No. 10), in Uganda. "How special to stay at Bwindi Lodge," wrote one guest, "and be so well cared for when setting out to see the magnificent gorillas."

At No. 2, Gibb's Farm is "the most unique lodge of any kind in East Africa," claimed one reader. Overlooking Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, a protected area known for its incredible density of wildlife, the 17-cottage property offers activities around its coffee plantation and gardens, as well as bush walks from the property and wildlife drives in the crater. One guest loved that it was "fun for adults and kids." It's "an incredibly beautiful hotel," said another. "The food was amazing, and I loved the farm-to-table philosophy."

Classic safaris are still well represented, with guests favoring wildlife-rich areas such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya, and the South African Kruger National Park. As well as wildlife sightings and luxurious rooms, it was the people who made an impact on T+L readers. Of andBeyond Bateleur Camp (No. 6), in Kenya's Masai Mara, one reader said that "the guides are truly spectacular," while another described "warm, welcoming service."

1. Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge, Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

On the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bisate Lodge has six stylish and cozy villas, each overlooking the surrounding villages, forests, and misty mountain peaks. The main activity there is trekking into the national park to spend some time watching the mountain gorillas, but there are also opportunities to see golden monkeys, go hiking in the mountains, or visit the grave of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey. The staff are "amazing," said one reader, who added the food was "delicious," especially the homegrown vegetables. Another fan said staying at Bisate was "the absolute best...experience we have ever had. The food, service, and rooms were beyond amazing."

9 incredible luxury family safari lodges for the ultimate African adventure

Melissa Klurman

Giraffes and zebras and elephants — oh my! What child wouldn't want to go on an African safari and see these wondrous animals up close, in the wild and in their natural environments? (Not to mention, lions, warthogs, antelope, cheetah, jaguar, wild dogs and the myriad other wild things that call the African bush their home).

How, though, do you take the kids on a bucket list African safari and have not only the space, but also the comforts and attention, necessary to keep you all happy?

The answer is simple: luxury safari lodges built for families.

These incredible accommodations run the gamut from elegant villas to multi-bedroom glamping tents. What they all have in common is plenty of room to spread out, ultra-luxurious furnishings, gourmet dining and top-tier service all within arm's reach of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.

Take your family along to these nine fantastic lodges in Africa.

Singita Pamushana Malilangwe House — Zimbabwe

safari lodges for families

Perched high on a sandstone ridge overlooking the shimmering expanse of the Malilangwe Dam sits Singita Pamushana, the only safari lodge located in the exclusive, 130,000-acre Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve.

I've been on dozens of safaris and found this safari lodge to be a truly special wild corner of Africa: You'll never see another safari vehicle as you explore the reserve populated by endangered black rhino and large populations of elephant, cheetah, wild dog and leopard.

Captivating views of wildlife-filled wilderness stretch everywhere you look, but the camp itself is a family-friendly oasis of paved walkways (a rarity at African safari camps), protected from wildlife, so you can walk without an escort in the evenings.

Also perfect for families: The five-bedroom, five-bathroom Malilangwe House, an expansive, exclusive-use African home overlooking the Malilangwe Dam.

Among the highlights of this sophisticated retreat are a large, private infinity pool, a spacious dining room and living room with floor-to-ceiling windows, and a chef's kitchen — complete with a personal chef. It's designed with a mix of traditional Shangaan materials mixed with a bright palette that makes the house feel fun for kids instead of stuffy.

Another perk of staying at Malilangwe House: A private vehicle and dedicated driver and ranger will take your family on twice-daily game drives tailored to suit your personal interests, whether that's looking for majestic birds or herds of elephants.

Age considerations and rates: Children of any age can join on game drives, but they must be over 16 and older to participate in a bush walk.

All-inclusive rates start at $12,390 per night for up to six guests, or $14,380 per night for seven to 10 guests, at off-peak times (Jan. 6–31, May and Oct. 1–Dec. 14) and rise to per night rates of $16,220 for up to six guests and $18,880 for seven to 10 guests during peak periods (July and August and Dec. 15 –Jan. 5).

Time + Tide Chongwe House — Lower Zambezi, Zambia

safari lodges for families

For all the comforts of home, but with a dramatic change of scenery, Time + Tide's two-story, four-bedroom, four-bathroom private Chongwe House feels a bit like if the Swiss Family Robinson hired an interior designer to create an upscale treehouse home.

Open-air rooms incorporate natural elements such as rocks and stone slabs and look like they've been carved from a secret tunnel of caves.

There's also furniture created from fallen winter thorn trees, couches perched on river rocks, slab rock coffee tables, open-air bathtubs that seem to float over the river, outdoor rainfall showers open to the sky and terraces that jut into the open air. It's a dream destination for kids made complete when elephants follow the river walk by the private pool.

A dedicated house staff — including a cook and a private guide — will help plan your days and accompany your family on not only game drives, but also on treks that take advantage of the unique river setting such as canoe safaris, boat cruises and angling trips to catch tiger fish.

Age considerations and rates: Children of all ages are welcome at Chongwe House; minimum age for walking safaris is 12.

All-inclusive rates start at $900 per adult, per night (minimum of six adults) in April, May and November, and $1,200 per adult, per night in June to October (the property is closed the rest of the year). Children 4 to 18 pay 50% of adult rate, children 3 and under stay free.

Natural Selection's Safari House — Etosha, Namibia

safari lodges for families

For a desert-focused safari destination, Namibia thrills with the ability to see both black and white rhinos along with fascinating desert species such as black-faced impala, oryx and the elusive Hartmann's zebra, in addition to lion, cheetah, eland and antelope species.

To experience a desert safari with your family, Natural Selection's aptly, if not creatively, named Safari House, a private use farmhouse in Etosha Heights Private Reserve, bordering famed Etosha National Park, fits the bill.

The farmhouse offers a home-away-from-home feel with overstuffed couches and lots of comfortable spaces where little ones can unwind after a long day listening for the crashes of white rhinos the area is known for.

Don't think, though, that luxury isn't at play at this three bedroom, three bathroom farmhouse. There's a fully fenced and enclosed swimming pool and adjacent lush garden — ideal for kids to safely play in — and a full kitchen with a private chef who can serve meals catered to your family's tastes inside in the dining room or outside under the open Africa sky by your boma (fire pit).

A private safari car and guide will tailor game drives to your family's interests either on excursions to the waterhole just a mile from the house or traversing the private reserve.

Age considerations and rates: Children of any age can join on game drives, but they must be over 12 and older to participate in a bush walk. The entire property can be yours for $2,100 per night, all-inclusive, for up to six adults and three children.

&Beyond's Tengile River Lodge — Sabi Sands, South Africa

safari lodges for families

Two enormous free-standing (and air-conditioned) suites are connected by a covered walkway to create a self-contained family suite at Tengile River Lodge nestled in Sabi Sands, the exclusive private reserve that borders famed Kruger National Park. From this posh lodging perch, you and your family will be able to view animals that are drinking from and following the Sand River, which runs alongside the camp and right outside the family suite.

This double unit comprises two suites, so your family will get not one but two pools, plus two spacious decks with sunken living rooms, two outdoor showers and two oversize tubs that could also be mistaken for plunge pools. When booking the family suite you can also arrange a private safari vehicle and guide for the duration of your stay so you can look for the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) and explore the 5-million-acre Sabi Sands conservation area (roughly the size of New Jersey) in comfort.

Age considerations and rates: Children ages 12 and up are welcome at Tengile. The all-inclusive rate for the family suite is $6,385 per night for four people.

Asilia's Jabali Private House — Ruaha National Park,Tanzania

safari lodges for families

Tucked into Ruaha National Park, an expansive wilderness area that's nearly half the size of Switzerland, is Jabali Private House, a stylish stand-alone property that gives your family the exclusive run of the three-bedroom home and the surrounding area without encountering other guests nearby. The private house includes two bedrooms lightly decorated in a light and airy, cream-toned palette so you can focus on the views outside instead of the spaces inside.

Whether you're lounging in beanbag chairs on the deck or floating in your infinity pool, you'll be able to keep an eye on the bordering Ikuka escarpment where large herds of elephants can often be seen. Jabali Private House also comes with the included services of a private chef who can offer cooking lessons in the house's kitchen as well as a curated menu for your family.

A private vehicle and guide will cater game drives specifically to your family's interests.

Age considerations and rates: Children ages 5 and up are welcome at Jabali.

Low season (November–Dec. 19 and Jan. 6 –March 14) the all-inclusive rate is $4,375 per night; high season (July to October and Dec. 20–Jan. 5) it is $6,130 per night (rates are for entire house).

Great Plains' Mara Nyika — Maasai Mara, Kenya

safari lodges for families

For true "Out of Africa" vibes, it's hard to beat this luxurious tented camp tucked into the lush green plains of the Maasai Mara's Naboisho Conservancy where you and your family will have a front-row seat for the great migration of thousands of wildebeests and zebra. Although you'll be able to see wildlife here any time of year, the best chance to see peak numbers during migration are August through October.

Mara Nyika is a Relais and Château property that demonstrates why tented "glamping" safaris in Kenya became the industry leader. Picture copper soaking tubs, leather couches and rich silk carpets all within the canvas walls of ultra-plush tents.

Mara Nyika sleeps just 14 guests across an area spanning 50,000 acres — so you won't have to share the camp with other people. Unique to this kind of tented safari, the camp has two new family suites comprising two bedrooms each. In such a remote spot, it's a special perk to have your kids staying under the same roof in spacious accommodations, and not in cots crammed into the corners of a tent.

Activities here include not only morning and night game drives but also the unique opportunity to visit a local Maasai Mara community. One more reason: You can take the kids on a hot air balloon ride across the Maasai Mara to spot wildlife.

Age considerations and rates: Children ages 6 and up are welcome at Mara Nyika.

All-inclusive rates per two-bedroom family suite per night range from $3,600 for off-peak (April–June 14; November–Dec. 19) to $7,050 for peak season (June 15–Oct. 31, and Dec. 20–Jan. 10).

Toka Leya, Wilderness Safaris — Victoria Falls, Zambia

safari lodges for families

A visit to Victoria Falls, also known as Moasi a Tunya ("The Smoke that Thunders"), is a popular part of an African family safari. When I visited with my own daughter, I chose Toka Leya , a Wilderness Safaris property, for its fabulous location perched right on the Zambezi River and its family tents that comprise two en suite bedrooms with four-postered, canopied beds and a shared living room with an enormous deck to relax on.

We found it to be a very laid-back stay after some hectic travel — until, that is, the monkeys started jumping on our tent roof (actually a real perk of this safely fenced lodge). Another family perk of the river-front lodge — a real pizza oven serving up hot and gooey cheese-topped, wood-fired dough that we enjoyed to a chorus of hippos nearby.

Since this is a lodge and not a hotel, there are plenty of activities included in the rate: game drives into a nearby wildlife reserve; boat trips on the Zambezi River; and yes — the best for last — escorted trips to Victoria Falls, where you'll feel the mist of the falls as you witness the thundering waters up close.

Prepare to get wet — very wet — in peak season, February to June, but having a private escort means someone will be waiting with a nice, dry towel and a bottle of chilled water once you get back to the vehicle.

Age considerations: Recommended minimum age for Toka Leya is 6 years old. All-inclusive rates range from $684 per person, per night (Jan. 6–March 31) to $870 per person, per night (June through October).

Royal Malewane's Africa House — Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa

safari lodges for families

If your safari plans include an extended family group for a special reunion or celebration journey, this is the safari you've been looking for.

Royal Malewane's Africa House (part of The Royal Portfolio) in South Africa's Greater Kruger National Park bills itself as a "bush villa" and it delivers the type of grandeur that description conjures. There are six en-suite bedrooms, all with outdoor showers and decks, and space for 12 guests to spread out and fully relax. Since the house is completely self-contained, the kids can wake up early or play without worrying about disturbing anyone. (Also note that there is an additional room to house a nanny or private guide, photographer or pilot.)

The home is elegantly furnished with antique furniture, carved four-poster beds, plush silk pillows and Persian rugs, but it will still feel comfortable for kids since there are pops of color and whimsy, outdoor day beds to relax on, and a private pool.

A dedicated staff is included with a stay at Africa House, so you'll have a personal chef to plan meals to please all palates, plus two private cars and guides if you've brought nine to a dozen people, or one guide and safari car for groups of eight or less.

On those game drives you'll have a fantastic chance of spotting the Big 5 of African lore that Kruger is renowned for: lion, elephant, leopard, Cape buffalo and rhino.

Age considerations and rates: Children of all ages are welcome at Africa House.

All-inclusive rates start at $14,000 per night for one to eight guests (with one private vehicle) and $17,000 for nine to 12 guests (with two private vehicles)

The Stable Cottage, The Manor at Ngorongoro — Tanzania

safari lodges for families

A rolling verdant grass lawn leads up to The Stable Cottage at Ngorongoro , a whitewashed Dutch Colonial manor house that feels more like a country estate in Europe instead of the famed safari conservation area that's attracted travelers since the time of Teddy Roosevelt.

Don't worry though — just beyond the comfy confines of this spacious private home is the wild Africa you've come to explore. Here, your kids will have plenty of space to spread out across two floors, featuring a master bedroom and twin bedroom — each with their own individual bathrooms — a family lounge area downstairs, and another twin room, plus a bathroom and playroom upstairs.

Along with an elegant home to call your own, The Stable Cottage comes with the option to book a full "game package," which I highly recommend. With this package, your family with receive a private vehicle and driver/ranger for guided gamed drives to search for wildlife like lions and zebra in Ngorongoro Crater or Lake Manyara wildlife area. More uniquely, you'll also be able to participate in horseback riding on the estate, a truly special way to explore this corner of Africa.

Age considerations: Children of all ages are welcome at The Stable Cottage.

Rates range from $2,729 per night for all-inclusive use of the cottage, including all safari outings (April 1–May 31) to $3,826 per night (July 1–Oct. 31 and Dec. 20–Jan. 3).

One&Only's Gorilla's Nest — Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

safari lodges for families

For safari aficionados, there are few adventures more thrilling than trekking up a volcano to search for the elusive and endangered silverback gorillas in their natural habitat.

For families looking to expand their safari travels beyond their vehicle, gorilla trekking ranks high as the penultimate safari, a thrilling and immersive opportunity to view nature on foot. You'll hike into the deep jungle with your small safari group and expert guide and then trek into the mountains until you rendezvous with one of the remote families of gorillas that the rangers work round-the-clock to protect. You may have to work a bit to finally meet these incredible primates, but it's a moment you and your family will never forget.

When you're not adventuring into the bush, you'll have a luxurious base for your exploring at the incredibly swank One&Only's Gorilla Nest . The jungle-chic chalets are tucked into the eucalyptus forest and make you feel like you're living in the trees. The family option, the two-bedroom Forest Lodge, stretches over nearly 1,000 square feet and includes two bedrooms: one giant primary suite and a second room that can either be for two children 12 and under (although note that gorilla trekking is ages 15 and up) or one "adult" over 12. This is a sleek modern hideaway, but it still offers old school safari touches such as a fireplace and a standalone bathtub with forest views.

Age considerations: Children 10 and up are welcome on property. Note that visitors should be comfortable in rugged walking and hiking environments — the only way to see the endangered mountain gorillas is to trek into the mountains.

The all-inclusive property rate for a family of four starts at $7,800 per night. Note that while on-property activities are included in the nightly fee, gorilla trekking fees of $1,500 per person, per trek are paid directly the Rwandan government and are an additional cost.

1. Matetsi Victoria Falls

 • Location: Matetsi Private Game Reserve, Zimbabwe
 • Why we love it: A family-owned lodge with top-notch hospitality on the Zambezi River

The family-owned Matetsi Victoria Falls took its neutral palette of browns, blues, and beiges from the Great Zimbabwe Ruins and its Zambezi River setting, 25 miles upstream from the World Heritage Site–famous falls. Checking into the lodge’s four-bedroom River House villa or one of 18 suites, all with private pools along nine miles of private riverbank, helps fund the protection of the 136,000-acre Matetsi concession that forms part of the world’s largest transfrontier conservation area.

Passionate guides spanning two generations, all brimming with local lore, lead boat cruises, drives, and immersive walks through diverse ecosystems, taking you safely within a few yards of buffalo herds kicking up dust, elephants feeding, and basking hippos and crocodiles. The presence of Matetsi’s anti-poaching scouts has visibly boosted conservation efforts and radically reduced incursions, while solar-pumped waterholes attract animal concentrations, especially during the dry winter months.

From the chefs and waiters serving dishes with locally sourced ingredients to tables by the water’s edge, to the dedicated housekeepers, spa therapists, and gardeners, the true magic of Matetsi lies in its people, who make you fall in love with their country.

2. Singita Pamushana

 • Location: Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve, Zimbabwe
 • Why we love it: Postcard views, inimitable hospitality, and meaningful community work

With stupendous views from a kopje (Afrikaans for hill) densely wooded with msasa trees, Singita Pamushana offers visitors private access to Zimbabwe’s 130,000-acre Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve, which borders Gonarezhou National Park. The area encompasses contrasting types of terrain, from colossal boulders and sandstone outcrops to ancient baobab forests and dozens of documented rock art sites.

Showcasing ancient tribal crafts, the eight light, airy suites and private villa that make up Pamushana are the height of safari chic; each has an outdoor shower on an elevated pool deck with Malilangwe Dam views. The lodge has a secret weapon to add to its formidable reputation for food, wine, and service: its 100 percent local team, who set a high bar for hospitality in the bush. Wilderness adventures here also come with in-camp luxuries like spa treatments.

Days are filled with tag-and-release fishing, birding, and sunset cruises on the dam, ecology-focused walks with the seasoned guides, and game drives that yield large herds of elephant and buffalo, along with regular wild dog and big cat sightings. A hands-on cultural tour of Kambako, a nearby Shangaan village, crowns a stay that positively impacts a raft of community and conservation initiatives, from farming and school-feeding schemes to antipoaching patrols.

3. Wilderness DumaTau

 • Location: Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, Botswana
 • Why we love it: Stylish digs, brag-worthy wildlife sightings, and meaningful conservation

DumaTau, from the respected safari lodge company Wilderness , is bang in the middle of the hunting grounds of lion and endangered wild dog in the private 300,000-odd acre Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, which borders the western boundary of Chobe National Park. During the dry winter season, the Linyanti comes into its own when animals migrate to the wetlands from the woodlands. In this wild part of northern Botswana, game drives, walks, birding, boating, sunset cruises, and catch-and-release fishing make for action-packed days.

Located close to the source of the Savute Channel, the camp lies between two elephant corridors. A highlight is up-close sightings of breeding herds of elephants crossing between the mainland and the grassy islands in the swamps to munch on waterlilies. At night, hippos waddle between the 8 suites, which include private pools and outdoor showers overlooking Osprey Lagoon. Elevated walkways link the main camp’s spa, exercise pool, all-day deli, and relaxation decks beneath mature mangosteen trees to sister camp Little DumaTau. Just by choosing this property, guests are helping to fund the conservation of a crucial wildlife corridor in the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area. The camp also helps support targeted research on IUCN Red List species, like roan antelope, elephants, and wild dogs.

4. Jack’s Camp

Jack’s Camp is in the Kalahari Desert of Botswana.

 • Location: Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana
 • Why we love it: An overdose of vintage charm without cliché in an otherworldly desert locale

In the world of African safaris, Jack’s Camp is nothing short of an icon. The retreat combines under-canvas romance with unique adventures into the ethereal emptiness of the shimmering salt pans. After days filled with game drives, meerkat interactions, and quad-bike adventures, return to the nine capacious suites, individually decorated with four-poster beds and burgundy textiles. Meals are crystal-and-candlelight affairs in the communal tent, which features art and artifacts the Bousfield family have collected through the generations. It’s a safari destination with a deep sense of place and personality.

5. Jabali Ridge

Courtesy of Asilia Jabali Ridge

 • Location: Ruaha National Park, Tanzania
 • Why we love it: A stylish base in a prime location within Tanzania’s less-visited Ruaha National Park

Forty percent bigger than the bucket-list Serengeti National Park but with a fraction of the visitors, the 7,800 mile Ruaha National Park is the Tanzania that seasoned safarigoers visit for a game dense and relatively car-free experience. The park is known for unparalleled lion sightings (some 10 percent of Africa’s remaining lion population finds sanctuary here) along with thrilling up-close finds like a leopard resting in a tree or a pangolin trundling through the grass. The extremely dry climate, particularly between June and November, forces wildlife to congregate around the pans that remain when the Ruaha River and its tributaries dry up. That’s when cheetahs, wild dogs, and sable, roan, and lesser and greater kudu are frequently seen.

Asilia Africa was among the first safari lodge companies to up the luxury stakes in Ruaha when it opened Jabali Ridge in 2017. Eight breezy suites, designed with a neutral palette and shutters that deflect the sun, sit between enormous boulders above a baobab forest that stretches for miles. Between safari outings there is plenty of space to enjoy the scenery, whether you’re lounging with binoculars on your private deck, dining on plant-based dishes, or taking a post-spa dip in the infinity pool.

6. Singita Sabora Tented Camp

Tan interior of a guest room at Singita Sabora Tented Camp

A luxury tent at Singita Sabora Tented Camp in Tanzania

 • Location: Grumeti Reserves, Tanzania
 • Why we love it: The ultimate under-canvas Serengeti experience without the crowds

Before philanthropist Paul Tudor Jones took over the lease on the 350,000-acre Grumeti Reserve, where Singita Sabora Tented Camp is located, it was a poached-out hunting block. Over the past two decades, the positive impact of Singita’s light-footprint nature-based tourism here, between community land and the unfenced western border of the Serengeti National Park, has contributed to the restoration of a historic animal migration route. Success stories include the reintroduction of eastern black rhino and the return of large elephant and buffalo herds. All of this ensures that game viewing happens year-round, not just when migrating wildebeest arrive in search of fresh grazing.

Of the reserve’s five retreats—each individually tailored to its location on the reserve—Sabora offers hospitality under canvas that feels luxurious yet connected to the landscape. In 2020, Singita rebuilt this longtime favorite, swapping romantic 1920s-era antique furnishings with a chic minimalism that blends into the grassy plains. On closer inspection, interiors reveal layers of handcrafted detail and local provenance. Modern must-haves in the explorer-style camp include a library and media room, winetasting room, fitness center, and spa, all under canvas, and nine self-contained tented suites with fully stocked pantries, private decks big enough to lay down yoga mats, open-plan bathrooms, and canopied beds with localized AC to conserve energy.

The food is often prepared by graduates of Grumeti’s own community culinary school and makes the most of locally sourced produce and East African flavors. Take your pick from full-on Swahili feasts to meal-in-one salads for days out in the bush. Aside from long, immersive game drives without another car in sight, the erudite, passionate guides take guests on nature walks or to visit RISE, an innovative research center on site where scientists are using data to inform conservation solutions.

7. Mwiba Lodge

This tented suite lounge at Mwiba Lodge is decorated with prints of wildlife and has views of the surrounding landscape.

A tented suite at Mwiba Lodge

Courtesy of Mwiba Lodge

 • Location: Mwiba Wildlife Reserve, Tanzania
 • Why we love it: Exclusivity with a light footprint in Tanania’s wildlife-filled Mwiba concession

Lying south of the Serengeti National Park, Mwiba Lodge is the flagship property of Legendary Expeditions , which offers private vehicles as standard in all its light-footprint tented camps in the Serengeti. The lodge has exclusive access to the Mwiba concession, 125,000 acres of private wilderness. The concession forms part of an ambitious, 6 million–acre lease protected by the Friedkin Trust to secure a vital wildlife migration corridor between the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park.

The lodge’s 10 glass and canvas suites sit between boulders, euphorbias, and fever and coral trees high above the open plains. There’s a spa, gym, extensive wine cellar, and infinity pool where lunch is often served. From December through March, the wildebeest herds drop their calves in the south, ensuring even greater predator activity. Privately guided drives, elevated animal hides for game viewing, helicopter tours, sundowners on the edge of the escarpment, fly camping under the stars, and bush walks with Hadza hunter-gatherers are year-round activities.

8. Angama Mara

Angama Mara sits high on an escarpment overlooking Kenya’s Masai Mara.

Courtesy of Angama Mara

 • Location: Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
 • Why we love it: Cinematic views, handsome interiors, and successful community partnerships

With a foundation dedicated to raising funds to support conservation, education, healthcare, and small businesses, Angama Mara is an enduring example of partnering successfully with community land owners. Set 1,000 feet above the Rift Valley’s sought-after Mara triangle—a less crowded corner of the greater Maasai Mara National Reserve—this unconventional, thoroughly modern camp has raised the bar when it comes to intuitive service and eye-catching functional design. Angama draws on the collective experience of founders and safari icons Nicky and the late Steve Fitzgerald and, more recently, their daughter, Kate.

Strung along hills made famous in Out of Africa , Angama is divided into two small camps, each with 15 glass-fronted suites in bold Maasai colors, with everything you didn’t even know you needed on safari. The landscape panoramas from the accommodations are cinematic (even the loo has a view). Outdoors on cantilevered decks, stylish red recliners are arranged for watching hot-air balloons drift across the Mara at eye level.

It’s easy to laze away the day in camp with its beading studio, gallery, map room, photographic studio, fitness room, and huge pool with mesmerizing Mara views. Or to linger over deceptively simple, feel-good food, including the “best burger in the Mara” as its called on the menu. Many dishes celebrate the bounty of the shamba (Kiswahili for vegetable garden), where you can view before sitting down to a plant-based lunch. Even so, well-versed guides are waiting to whisk you down the hill to explore the vast grassy plains dotted with thorn trees where zebras, giraffes, topi, and Thomson’s gazelle graze. Here, large herds of elephants congregate on the banks of the Mara River and big cats, especially lions, appear. Angama’s mobile safari camp, four tents for up to eight guests, is a light-footprint alternative to the main camp. Delivering the same attention to detail when it comes to style and service, it can be packed up and repositioned to move with the herds and predator action.

9. Segera Retreat

 • Location: Laikipia, Kenya
 • Why we love it: An art-filled sanctuary with successful community programs

Situated on the grassy Laikipia plateau, Segera feels more like a luxurious, off-grid eco-resort than a safari lodge. Looking onto Mount Kenya, the private retreat has established a reputation as the ultimate mid-safari circuit pause, a luxury base from which to take leisurely walks or guided game drives on 50,000 acres to view large elephant populations and one of the last strongholds of the endangered black rhino.

Some guests continue on from here by helicopter deep into Kenya’s northern frontier, while others enjoy the holistic spa and practice yoga. The six one-bedroom villas are decorated with sculptures from owner and former Puma CEO Jochen Zeitz’s extensive art collection. Families usually check into Segera House or Villa Segera with their multiple bedrooms and private staff. For those who want to feel closer to nature, the Daniel Pouzet–designed Nay Palad Bird Nest is a solar-powered circular sleep-out platform on two levels with 360-degree views.

Guests all have access to the art-filled main lodge with a bar and dining room. Here, a daily changing menu with sustainably sourced, organically grown ingredients is paired with bottles from the retreat’s well-stocked wine gallery. Working closely with Maasai communities, the privately owned ranch runs several successful community projects, from a female antipoaching ranger academy to solar farms, schools, and beading co-operatives. The planting of 2 million indigenous trees is the resort’s ambitious reforestation project to restore fertile topsoil, reduce erosion, and offset carbon emissions.

10. ol Donyo Lodge

 • Location: Chyulu Hills National Park, Kenya
 • Why we love it: Outdoor sleep-outs and a diverse range of activities liven up the traditional Kenyan safari experience

Set on 270,000 acres of Maasai-owned land bordering the Chyulu Hills National Park, ol Donyo Lodge is a perfect counterpoint to the more famous plains of Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Part of the Great Plains Conservation safari lodge collection, this intimate lodge offers nine understated suites, each with a private plunge pool and an outdoor star bed so guests can take in the sounds of hyenas and lions under a blanket of stars.

But it’s the array of outdoor activities that draws most travelers to ol Donyo: saddle up on rides, lace up your hiking boots, or take a two-wheeled mountain-bike safari. Throw in memorable views of Mount Kilimanjaro and you have one of the best lesser-known luxury safari camps in Kenya.

11. andBeyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge

 • Location: NamibRand Reserve, Namibia
 • Why we love it: A design-minded retreat in an out-of-this world setting

The sustainably designed andBeyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge on the edge of the NamibRand Nature Reserve captures the raw beauty of the world’s oldest living desert. The otherworldliness of the environment has been consciously translated into every aspect of the experience. The off-grid design factors in the extreme climate and harsh elements, and the desert’s forms, colors and textures are reflected in sculptural stone and steel lines that give way to soft, organic shapes. Throughout, glass walls slide away to amplify the big-sky views. The 10 guest suites are self-sufficient, solar-powered private retreats, each generating ample energy to run on photovoltaic power for everything from the AC and the deep swimming pools to the water harvesting and recycling systems.

Activities at the lodge include climbing the world’s highest dunes at Sossusvlei or e-biking along gravel trails to caves with rock art by the desert’s earliest inhabitants. Back at the lodge, dishes that reflect Namibia’s cultural history include venison and Kalahari truffles and fresh seafood from the Atlantic Ocean. With close to zero light pollution, the Namib is one of the best dark sky locations in the Southern Hemisphere. The best way to end any evening is in the lodge’s observatory. You can also fall asleep counting stars, thanks to a skylight above your bed.

12. Shipwreck Lodge

The accommodations at Shipwreck Lodge in Namibia resemble the hulls of ships.

Shipwreck Lodge is located on Namibia’s Skeleton Coast.

Courtesy of Shipwreck Lodge

 • Location: : Skeleton Coast National Park, Namibia
 • Why we love it: Eye-catching architecture in one of Africa’s most remote wilderness destinations

Taking its cue from the broken hulls of ships run aground on this coast, Shipwreck Lodge offers 10 freestanding suites of wood and glass seemingly washed up on this lonely shore. Part of the Natural Selection safari lodge collection, it’s the only luxury retreat along 300 miles of beach, with nature drives, dune walks, and quad-bike excursions. Shipwreck Lodge also offers unrivaled access to a coastal ecosystem home to raucous (and malodorous) seal colonies, endemic flora and uniquely desert-adapted wildlife.

13. Waterside at Royal Malewane

The wooden suite decks at Waterside at Royal Malewane offer views of the surrounding wilderness.

Courtesy of Waterside at Royal Malewane

 • Location: Thornybush Private Reserve, South Africa
 • Why we love it: Joy-sparking interiors, polished service, and action-packed game viewing led by seasoned guides

The South African Biden family launched its benchmark-setting Royal Portfolio collection with the launch of Royal Malewane Lodge in 1999, and helped elevate Thornybush Private Reserve’s status in the Greater Kruger conservation area. Its recently debuted sister property, Waterside, captures the same private residence ambience. The color-saturated style for which Liz Biden has become well known doesn’t disappoint in seven extravagantly sized suites (some with two bedrooms) and a four-bedroom family villa. No beige here. In-camp amenities ideal for groups include a lap pool, gym, yoga studio, spa, and a games room.

Greater animal diversity, from huge lion prides to 400-strong buffalo herds, means a richer game-viewing experience in this reserve since fences were dropped on the eastern boundary with the Timbavati in 2017, opening it up to the Greater Kruger area. Game drives and walks are led by one of the most qualified guiding teams in Africa. A research and conservation center has recently opened, and you can also spend a morning with the dog antipoaching team.

14. Loapi Tented Camp

A bedroom at Loapi Tented Camp at Tswalu Kalahari open onto private deck

A bedroom at Loapi Tented Camp at Tswalu in South Africa

 • Location: Kalahari, South Africa
 • Why we love it: Contemporary private safari villas overlooking the Kalahari

Tswalu Kalahari , South Africa’s largest privately protected conservation area, comprises 281,000 acres of the semi-arid Kalahari region in the north of the country. Each of the six private villas at Loapi is a stand-alone camp and comes with a private safari vehicle, guide, and tracker. The neutral decor is a contemporary contrast to the more traditional look of the reserve’s main lodge, Motse.

Loapi is all about ensuring highly personalized experience, making it ideal for families and multi-gen travelers looking to shape their safari escape. Each villa also includes a private chef and butler, allowing you to set the pace and focus of meals each day. Lazy breakfast or locally inspired sundowner snacks? All you have to do is ask. Vacations are precious, and at Loapi you get to call the shots.

15. andBeyond Phinda Forest Lodge

andBeyond Phinda Forest Lodge will reopen in December 2023 following a complete renovation.

Courtesy of andBeyond

 • Location: KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
 • Why we love it: Hands-on conservation activities from a stylish base on a groundbreaking private reserve

When it first opened with a clutch of light-footprint, glass-walled hideaways, andBeyond Phinda Forest Lodge was considered revolutionary in its design. It also drew attention to a tract of critically endangered ancient sand forest within the reserve, home to two rare antelope, the suni and red duiker. Currently undergoing a reinvention, the new-look Forest Lodge has bigger, airier suites, including a new family suite, and modern safari must-haves like a state-of-the-art gym. Highlights of guided drives and walks, led by graduates of the renowned on-site ranger training school, include reliable cheetah and rhino sightings along with large elephant and buffalo herds migrating across the reserve.

Few reserves in Africa have the biodiversity and habitat diversity Phinda Private Game Reserve offers or its long list of conservation successes and commitment to working closely with neighboring communities through the Africa Foundation. A bold restoration project on community-owned land in the heart of Zululand, this is where andBeyond’s visionary “care of the land, wildlife and people” impact model was born. Some 74,000 acres of farming land have been reclaimed for wildlife, including endangered black and white rhinos, elephants, cheetahs, lions, and elusive creatures like Temminck’s pangolins. Guests can sponsor and experience conservation in action, from rhino notching to elephant collaring, or visit a Zulu village for an immersive cultural experience.

16. Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

 • Location: Western Cape, South Africa
 • Why we love it: An immersion in forests, coasts, and flowers two hours by car from Cape Town

The equally lovely Garden and Forest lodges of Grootbos Private Nature Reserve overlook Indigenous flowering plant–clad hills, which roll down to a bay where southern right whales calve in season. This singular retreat, carbon negative since 2018, protects a botanical treasure trove—around 6,000 acres—known as the Cape Floral Kingdom. This includes a 2,000-year old milkwood tree forest, where lantern-lit dinners are held. Guided drives, hikes, horseback riding, and wandering through ancient sea caves down on the Walker Bay coast are some of the activities on offer. Staying active is necessary, given how delicious the seasonal, locally sourced, provenance-led menus are, paired to cool-climate wines from the local Overberg region from the owner’s excellent cellar.

More than 900 plant species have been identified on the biodiverse reserve, and many are depicted in a growing collection of botanical art housed in Africa’s first florilegium set below Garden Lodge. While most luxury lodges in South Africa support the conservation of big game and their habitat, through its foundation Grootbos sponsors entomology and botany projects that inform conservation and fund more than 50 community empowerment programs in the area.

17. Singita Kwitonda Lodge

The large bathroom of a suite at Singita Kwitonda Lodge

 • Location: Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
 • Why we love it: Once-in-a-lifetime gorilla treks with a mission-led safari lodge company

Singita’ s Rwandan outpost, strategically positioned on the eastern boundary of Volcanoes National Park to expand vital habitat for mountain gorillas, has been designed to soothe and embrace, providing every conceivable pre- and post-trek comfort. Preparing a pot of local-label ginger tea for you is as thoughtful and considered as the selection of a perfect glass of red from the vintage wine-stocked cellar.

Local building know-how and sustainably sourced materials, like volcanic rock, bamboo, river stones, and handmade clay bricks, ground Singita Kwitonda Lodge’s grand architecture firmly in Rwandan tradition and culture. The interiors of the lodge’s eight suites and private villa, Kataza, are cozy and cocooning, with indoor and outdoor fireplaces and private heated pools. The bathrooms double as spas with massage beds, while yoga mats, art supplies, board games, informative books, and binoculars add to the residential feel.

From the bedding to the modern art, molten lava shades are a constant reminder of the enigmatic volcanic peaks protruding from the cloud forest beyond tall, double-glazed windows. While in-room dining is done well, most guests gravitate to the convivial main lodge to swap trekking tales over nourishing, plant-centric small plates. Fresh produce comes straight from the kitchen garden or the fertile patchwork of small, family owned farms in the surrounding district.

There are guided garden tours and nature walks that help guests better understand Singita’s purpose here. The company began acquiring and piecing together hundreds of tiny, individually owned agricultural plots with the aim of reestablishing gorilla habitat. An on-site tree nursery provides indigenous saplings to the national park as part of a wide-scale reforestation program to expand the primates’ natural habitat. A visit to the Dian Fossey Research Centre, a shord drive from the lodge, is a must.

18. One&Only Nyungwe House

 • Location: Nyungwe National Park, Rwanda
 • Why we love it: World-class hospitality in an emerging destination in Rwanda

When it opened in late 2018 on a working tea plantation next to the national park, One&Only Nyungwe House was the only luxury retreat in this part of Rwanda. But that could change, now that African Parks , a Johannesburg-based conservation NGO is taking over the management of the Nyungwe Forest to improve wildlife conservation efforts and develop tourism. The goal is to showcase why Nyungwe—which supplies 70 percent of Rwanda’s water—is also a compelling destination for aficionados of the natural world. The terrain is filled with mahogany and ebony trees, swamps, and waterfalls, and it’s home to 13 species of primates, including the colobus monkey and the gray-cheeked mangabey. There are also some 300 bird species, such as great blue turacos and giant hornbills.

The sprawling One&Only retreat, with its 22 one- and two-bedroom suites, is a destination unto itself. Geometric Imigongo designs cover interior walls with their dramatic, black-white-and-red color scheme; hand-woven decorative plates from local cooperative Indego Africa decorate the rooms; and king-size four-poster beds dominate spacious bedrooms, which face the jungle through floor-to-ceiling windows.

19. Lolebezi

 • Location: Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia
 • Why we love it: Sustainability-minded design in one of Africa’s unsung wild corners

If you thought Zambia was all about rustic under-canvas camps, it’s time to meet Lolebezi. Part of African Bush Camps collection founded by Zimbabwean guide Beks Ndlovu in 2006, Lolebezi is set on a private concession yards from the Zambezi River. With a contemporary design taking its cue from the surrounding Winterthorn acacia, Lolebezi has upped the ante for luxury in the wilderness within Zambia’s youngest national park. Johannesburg-based Fox Browne wove textures and green-dominant themes into the suites and two family units to dazzling effect.

Located on a game-rich inlet dubbed the “Discovery Channel,” Lolebezi offers a complete immersion in the landscape. Beyond the twice-daily drives in an open air vehicle, guests can spot game on silent canoe safaris, walk the forests in search of shy leopards, or take a river cruise to enjoy Africa’s fourth-largest waterway.

20. Lale’s Camp

Interior of tent at Lale's Camp in Ethiopia's Omo Valley, with mustard yellow textiles

 • Location: Omo Valley, Ethiopia
 • Why we love it: Community-led cultural encounters in Ethiopia’s remote Omo Valley

To experience the remote Omo Valley in southern Ethiopia, home to numerous tribes with distinct cultural traditions, Wild Expeditions Africa is the go-to safari outfitter. The company not only has the logistical expertise and insider access, but it also takes environmental and social impact seriously.

If fly camping in the Omo Valley sounds too rugged, then its privately guided trips to Lale’s Camp offers an under-canvas base with the luxury of a flushing toilet and a hot shower. Your host is camp owner Lale Biwa, a man with a thousand remarkable stories to tell about this place where he has lived most of his life. Accessible only by boat, his modest camp of seven tents provides access to the Omo River delta—a network of islands, marshes, and croc-infested waterways overhung with dense fig and mahogany forests known for numerous birds, including Pel’s fishing owl, plus black and white colobus, vervet and De Brazza’s monkeys.

Lale’s respectful relationships with the tribes of the Omo Valley make it possible to witness the traditions and daily lives of the Nyangatom, Kara, Hamar, and Mursi people on walks and boat trips.

The Best Safari Lodges for Families

safari lodges for families

There’s nothing like an African safari for thrilling wildlife experiences and magical family bonding. The best family safari lodges in Africa offer varied, engaging activities for little ones, teenagers and even grown-ups. There are malaria-free lodges, action-packed camps and captivating wildlife to discover on an ultimate safari adventure with your family.

Any trip with children requires plenty of planning, and a family safari is no exception. It’s important to consider which style of safari is best for your kids – taking into account their ages and interests – and to choose a lodge that provides everything you want. Some of the best safaris in Africa for families are those that can be customised and adapted to your needs.

At Jacada we specialise in arranging bespoke family trips – and we have first-hand experience travelling with our own families on safari. To help you choose the perfect spot, our experts have compiled a list of the best safari lodges in Africa for families. Below we’ll highlight which age group each property suits best and what makes it so special.

The Best Safari Lodges for Young Children

In the world of safaris, kids under age 12 are usually considered young children, and there are some age-related considerations to be aware of. For example, game drives aren’t always ideal for younger kids, so some lodges offer age-appropriate activities for them instead.

Fortunately, there are plenty of family-friendly safari options. One thing to keep in mind is that much of eastern and southern Africa has a malaria risk, which requires extra preparation. To avoid this, we suggest staying in a malaria-free reserve if you’re travelling with young kids.

Kwandwe, South Africa

The malaria-free Kwandwe Private Game Reserve in South Africa’s Eastern Cape features two luxury lodges that accept all ages. We particularly love Ecca Lodge where children can enjoy the educational activity books and animal checklists. Renowned for its epic treasure hunts, Kwandwe is a great place for curious young minds.

safari lodges for families

Morukuru, South Africa

In the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve you’ll find Morukuru Family , a collection of three private houses: Owner’s House , Farm House and River House . Here you’ll have a dedicated staff of experts to assist with everything from animal tracking to childcare. Morukuru is specifically designed for families, with kid-friendly goodies, activities and game drives.

The Best Safari Lodges for Adventurous Families

When it comes to family adventure, an African safari can certainly deliver. The most remote and adventurous safari lodges are often best for families with teenagers, who can participate in all the exciting activities on offer.

Some of the best private reserves in Botswana and Zimbabwe are well off the beaten track, while the deserts of Namibia and the gorillas of Rwanda promise once-in-a-lifetime safari experiences. If you’re ready for an unforgettable adventure, these lodges are ideal.

Wilderness Little Kulala, Namibia

Wilderness Little Kulala is an intimate camp set in the epic red desert of Sossusvlei . Thrill-seeking travellers can make the most of the lunar-like landscapes on quad bike and e-bike adventures. Embark on a magical sunrise hike up ‘Big Daddy’ (the largest sand dune in Sossusvlei), or float across the sky on an exhilarating hot air balloon safari .

safari lodges for families

Wilderness Bisate, Rwanda

Wilderness Bisate is a stunning safari lodge at the cutting edge of conservation. Set within the breathtaking Volcanoes National Park , it’s the perfect home base for trekking through the Virunga Mountains to witness mighty mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in the wild. The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15, so this destination is best for older teenagers.

safari lodges for families

The lodge itself is truly magical, with its six spherical thatched villas blending into the foliage. Bisate is also one of the most sustainable lodges in the world , with a strong focus on environmental protection and an innovative tree-planting initiative.

safari lodges for families

Wilderness Vumbura Plains, Botswana

Wilderness Vumbura Plains is located in the Okavango Delta , one of the premier wildlife regions in Africa. The camp’s remote setting means that simply getting there is an adventure – and once you arrive, you’ll enjoy an authentic safari experience far away from the crowds. Jeep, speedboat and hot air balloon safaris are sure to create magical family memories.

safari lodges for families

Matetsi, Zimbabwe

Close to the epic Victoria Falls and situated within its own private game reserve, Matetsi boasts excellent safaris, tours of the nearby waterfalls and fun on the Zambezi River. Older teenagers can also enjoy a host of other adventurous activities, from canoeing and whitewater rafting to ziplining and helicopter rides – or even bungee jumping.

safari lodges for families

Lewa House, Kenya

Lewa House is an authentic family-friendly lodge in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy , whose owners raised their own children here. It’s also good for all ages, but there are some especially exciting things to do: horse riding, canopy walks, helicopter rides and natural pools in Ngare Ndare Forest are just the beginning. We also love the strong focus on conservation.

The Best Safari Lodges for all Ages

If you’re travelling with children of different ages – for example, kids under the age of 6 and teenagers – it’s important to find a safari lodge that suits everyone. One good option is to choose a kid-friendly camp in a legendary location like Kenya or Tanzania . While older kids seek out the Big Five , the little ones can splash in the pool or play in the shade back at camp.

Sala’s Camp, Kenya

If you want to see the Great Migration with your family, Sala’s Camp is a fantastic choice. Set in the Maasai Mara , it’s surrounded by wildlife. Children of all ages are welcome here, with plenty of nice touches like babysitting services, breakfast cookouts and private plunge pools. There’s even a family-friendly safari programme that encourages kids to find the ‘Little Five’.

Forest Chem Chem, Tanzania

Forest Chem Chem is a slow-paced safari camp that’s ideal for families. Located in a shady forest within a private conservancy between Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Park , it’s the perfect place to see ‘big tusker’ elephants and other animals. safari lodges for families

Faru Faru, Tanzania

Childcare services are available to keep little ones entertained, while older children can track animals, go birdwatching, learn about astronomy or practise wilderness survival techniques in the Young Rangers programme.

safari lodges for families

Londolozi, South Africa

Based in the Sabi Sands private reserve, Londolozi almost guarantees excellent game sightings; even the elusive leopard is sometimes spotted here. The camp caters to children aged 6 and up, with private swimming pools and a dedicated team who make game drives magical for kids. The Cubs Den will also keep younger family members entertained at camp.

Tarkuni Private House, South Africa

Set in South Africa ’s malaria-free Tswalu Kalahari Reserve , this is a completely exclusive and exquisitely comfortable family home. The private Tarkuni residence is superbly spacious, with room for up to 10 family members, and comes with a team of staff and private vehicles. • Select lodges, camps, and hotels offering family-style interleading tents or bedrooms.

Best African Family Safari Lodges

When selecting the best African family safari lodges, there are a few important factors to consider. When traveling with little ones or even taking grandparents on safari, you might prefer a family tent or private villa. This setup allows you have the entire family under one roof and spend quality time together between game drives and activities.

Best Safari Lodges in Africa for Families-Multigenerational Vacations

Private villas often come with a dedicated guide and safari vehicles. This allows complete flexibility and the ability to set the pace for the day, including activity schedules and mealtimes. You essentially have a team of staff looking after you and your family.

Many family-friendly safari lodges offer child care services or kid-friendly activities. This allows grown-ups to have some priceless downtime for a siesta or a romantic dinner under the stars. It’s also a chance for younger guests to gain a sense of independence. This will give them great stories to share when they return home.

Health is always a consideration with overseas travel, and all the more so when kids come along. For this reason, it’s worth considering safari destinations that are free from malaria or extremely low risk. You might be pleasantly surprised to discover that some of Africa’s top wildlife destinations fall into this category.

Little Bush

Sabi Sabi’s Little Bush near Sabi Sands Game Reserve in Kruger National Park was specifically created to cater to the needs of families, and it’s a delightful experience.

The keywords here are intimacy and seclusion, an impression that’s reinforced by the lodge’s setting beneath shady riverine trees. In that secluded spot, you’ll experience superbly warm hospitality and find six luxury suites. When you and your family need an exclusive getaway, Little Bush is perfect. Think of it as your home away from home in Africa.

Grootbos

Grootbos Nature Reserve offers a unique experience between the forests, mountains, and sea, close to the southernmost point of the African continent.

Sarili Shamwari

Shamwari is a storied name on the South African safari scene. They have put all their experience and knowledge into creating the Sarili Private Lodge.

Best Safari Lodges in Rwanda

Rwanda’s safari reputation is based on some of the best mountain gorilla viewing on the planet, but this is not the only area in which this tiny, mountainous nation excels.

Volcanoes National Park is the perfect place to be in Rwanda. On the edge of it, and within easy reach of the starting point for gorilla treks, lies Kataza House. It offers unparalleled exclusivity and comfort, with architecture inspired by its stunning setting.

Best Safari Lodges in Tanzania

Look out from the deck to spot the buffalo, elephant, and lion that Ruaha is famous for, or simply make the most of having your own 3-bedroom house in the bush.

The private pool and the dining area are always focal points, while the dedicated staff team is there to cater to your every need.

Mkombe’s House

The legendary Serengeti is the stomping grounds for the hundreds of thousands of antelope that make up the Great Wildebeest Migration. In that vast savannah, Mkombe’s House is the only private villa in the region.

Mkombe's House Africa Lodge Multigenerational Vacations

The villa takes its name from a former guide who had a particular affinity for children, and this spirit infuses a private lodge built very much with younger children (and their parents) in mind. Described as a private family oasis, it features secure children’s rooms, along with highchairs, car seats, cribs, and baby baths.

Best Safari Lodges in Zimbabwe

Amalinda lodge .

Surrounded by immense, ancient granite boulders, the Homestead at Amalinda in Zimbabwe’s historic Matopos region offers a remarkable private safari experience. This is a true family home in every sense, billed as an opportunity to disconnect from reality and reconnect with family and nature.

Privacy and intimacy are high on the list of reasons to fall in love with the Homestead, and it provides the perfect launchpad for extraordinary encounters, including rhino tracking.

Singita Malilangwe House

This contemporary-style safari lodge offers spectacular views from its position on the crest of a sandstone ridge. The wilderness beyond the lodge is truly astonishing, while the house itself is a worthy addition to the landscape.

Best Family Lodges In Kenya

Alistair, our family safari expert gives you the inside scoop on the very best family and kid-friendly lodges for a Kenya safari.

Ali Headshot

These days, the vast majority of safari lodges and camps tend to tick the ‘family friendly’ box where one can enjoy nature’s finest alongside our ‘little darlings’ – in the hope that they will put the iPad down for some of it. The lodges that don’t cater for kids, really don’t, so avoid those if you are looking at taking along anyone who is under 12 at the very least. They won’t get the most out of it and consequently neither will you.

Got a question? Chat with an expert on WhatsApp who can help you instantly.

The ‘safari experience’ is continuously evolving from what was the traditional ‘morning and afternoon game drives all conducted within the vehicle’ to a more explorative and involved activity. The focus has shifted from the dated, must-see ‘Big 5’ to a more holistic experience which tends to be more enjoyable for the younger ones as lots of it is conducted outside the vehicle: understanding the terrain and how the whole ecosystem functions; what the tiny insects are building and how; the mandatory inspection of what an elephant has left in its wake; how the traditional tribes hunt and can we try it? Just some of the other experiences that sit alongside the traditional safari and Kenya has grasped this nettle. Some Lodges in South Africa were pioneers – have a look at Jaci’s Safari Lodge in Madikwe Game Reserve as a good example.

Picture7

All children are different and all adults’ expectations of their kids wants and needs are too. I have therefore described 3 places below which I found offered a brilliant experience for kids. In particular a 6-year-old first time safari goer.

The 3 lodges below can be combined easily for a virtually malaria-free holiday in Kenya or can be done individually with time on the beach afterwards. What I found was that we didn’t really need beach time after spending 10 days in Laikipia on safari but it does tend to nudge the budget up a bit.

Lewa House 1 Of 1 101

Firmly entrenched in The Lewa Conservancy’s DNA, Sophie Craig and her family run the beautiful Lewa House on the stunning Lewa Conservancy . Their 2 children live on site and make the 90 minute each-way trip to school in Nanyuki 5 days a week, the first 30 minutes of this is a game drive through the conservancy.

The lodge is beautifully built with an openness that maximises the stunning views that the lodge commands. The main thatched area, a really comfy and homely open space, the centrepiece is the enormous fireplace – the heart of every home. And this is exactly how it feels. The cottages feel like they are set up for families and house 4 people in 2 en-suite rooms, and the new Earthpods (which could easily be mistaken for Hobbit Homes!) sleep 2 but can easily accommodate a stretcher bed as they are enormous. There are outside baths and a large swimming pool. The whole of the lodge grounds are fenced off electrically so whilst you don’t get a rhino peering in through the window you know it’s safe for the kids to roam around the grounds exploring.

Lewa is one of the best places to see the Big Five in Kenya.

Walkign Safari Lewa House

There is so much to do here for all age groups: The conservancy is Big 5; the rhino population is enormous (if you don’t see rhino at Lewa I would suggest a quick trip to spec savers on your return); explore the forest from the canopy walk; cool off in the fresh water pools or catch a few fresh water crabs in them; bush picnics galore; walking or horse riding and if you are feeling really adventurous get out in a helicopter to explore the local terrain with the doors off – a real once in a lifetime experience. On your return to the lodge enjoy a drink by the fire as the kids have an early dinner. Babysitting is readily available but you are not likely to be up long after long active days in these incredible surroundings. I would suggest a minimum 3 night stay to enable you to get the most out of Lewa and all the activities on offer. You could quite easily be here for longer without going over old ground as there is so much to do.

Saruni Samburu

Saruni Samburu

Saruni Samburu is a short two hour drive up the road takes you down off the fertile Laikipia Plateau and into the much hotter and more arid area of Samburu . Here the soil is so dark red that it colours the mighty river a lovely shade of brown that Willy Wonka would be proud of. Saruni is set on a private concession called Kalama overlooking the Samburu National Reserve which is host to the Big 5 as well as the Samburu Special 5 , endemic to the area (Reticulated Giraffe, Beisa Oryx, Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich and the Gerenuk antelope). Game drives are done in both the reserve and on the Kalama concession.

Watching Elephants

Saruni has only 6 rooms, correctly described as villas. What they lack in quantity they more than make up for in style and size. Four of these Villas are family size and have at least 2 enormous bedrooms, a communal living area and every single bit of the villa tries to maximize the most amazing views out over the Samburu Reserve. The villas are deliberately open to the elements so that the cool breeze can circulate during the day but can be closed up entirely at night. The lodge has 2 swimming pools – a good dinner debate of which one has the best view!

What makes this place so wonderful for kids is the activities and how they are guided. All the staff at Saruni are local Samburu and all are dressed in their traditional garb – there is no khaki here – so your guide is an authentic spear bearing Samburu Warrior . Makes for a great start to any game drive for a youngster. The longer game drives down in the reserve are always punctuated with breakfast or snack stops which is a full-on meal in the bush, so no one gets hungry.

Warrior Academy

Walks (for most ages but dependent on season) are conducted within the concession and the highlight was an enormous scorpion that was coaxed out of its burrow and of course the Warrior academy . This is an activity aimed at family time so both adults and children can participate should they want to and focuses on bush craft and the ways of the local Samburu people. By the end of it you will all be loosing shafts from your homemade bows! For the more active or elder children there is the opportunity to climb Mt Ololokwe, the sacred mountain or visit rock art caves.

Whilst Saruni is at home hosting both safari honeymooners or for a Kenya family holiday , it’s difficult to come away not having an amazing time and a quite different experience altogether from Laikipia. Again, malaria is a very low risk in this area too.

El Karama Villa

Heading back south and into a different part of Laikipia you will find El Karama Lodge . Another haven for youngsters to experience the great outdoors. This private wildlife conservancy sits alongside a working dairy farm and whilst that sounds like would detract from your wilderness experience, actually, it adds another dimension and also becomes very much part of it. Sophie and Murray Grant who run the tourism side of the business and host the lodge, again have 2 young children so the focus of every stay is making it as family friendly and as a fun as possible. From the rooms, all of which have options for spare beds and one which is even called The Hobbit House, to the activities (Bush school & fly camping to the enormous walk-in rabbit run), to the fun and games around the pool which is a big part of what El Karama is all about.

El Karama Sleep Out

The farm offers a different perspective to life in rural Kenya and is a fun and interesting place to spend a bit of time. Not just with the dairy cows but also having a good look round the enormous veggie garden that supplies the lodge with all its greenery that finds its way on to your plate. The guides are superb with kids – I would say that whilst the standard everywhere was excellent in terms of child friendly guides, El Karama came out on top. They were always eager to please and would happily take the children off to make plaster of paris prints of a lion’s footprint or always have a little surprise up their sleeve – my daughter was over the moon when we stopped for sundowners and the guide pulled out her dinner of chicken and chips! We then had an amazing night-drive interaction with a male lion roaring away literally metres from our vehicle. There were also the camera traps, which we planted overnight with our guide and came back the next day to see what we had snared and of course the leopard mirrors – installed by Murray as a project but another talking point for the kids.

El Karama Kitchen Garden

We could have stayed for at least 5 nights. Although, had we done so we would have left a few stone heavier! In all honesty this would have to be said for all 3 lodges. The food everywhere was outstanding and there was always an option for the kids.

I would certainly have no hesitation in recommending any of these 3 as a stand alone experience or all joined together. Generally I would say heading north into Laikipia and Samburu offers a more family focussed experience where the animals are an important part of the safari but not the sole focus. Everyone will come back having had an amazing experience and learned about the local culture, traditions and environment.

Warrior Children

Other lodges that would be in the mix for an excellent family friendly safari would be:

Kichwa Tembo and Kicheche Main Camp in the Masai Mara ; Elephant Bedroom in Samburu; Satao Camp or Serena Kilaguni in Tsavo National Park .

Luxury safari lodges in South Africa…

Nottens Bush Camp

Sabi Sands, South Africa

Nottens Bush Camp exterior shot

If you are looking for a really special stay during your safari in South Africa, you should consider Nottens Bush Camp in Sabi Sand Reserve. It is one of the most luxurious safari lodges in South Africa.

The lodge has, unlike many others, no fence and no electricity so you are really staying in the bush (in one of the nine exclusive, private suites).

A guard brings you to your room after dark and we experienced why they do so. One night we almost stumbled over a hyena on our way to our room.

We were so shocked and happy that we had a guard with us. Another night my parents woke up and heard a strange noise in front of their room.

They got out of bed to take a look and there was an elephant eating the plants that stood on their porch.

From your room in African style, you are overlooking an open area with a waterhole, so sit on your porch and enjoy the panoramic views and the wildlife passing by. You will see zebra, elephants, antelopes, and many other animals pass by.

Nottens Bush Camp is one of the original game lodges in South Africa and is known for its highly experienced rangers. and the area is great for spotting leopards.

This family-owned lodge goes the extra mile. After our first safari, we entered our room. All the candles and lanterns were burning, the bathtub was filled, rose leaves everywhere and a bottle of South African Vonkelwijn (champagne) was waiting for us.

In the evening all the guests are sitting at a big table to share the most thrilling stories about their safari.

They organize two game drives a day. One at 05.30 in the morning and one at 15.30 in the afternoon. In between those safaris you can relax beside the pool or enjoy a massage at the Nature Spa.

Sabi Sands is also home to Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge which is one of the most family-friendly safari lodges in South Africa .

Phinda Mountain Lodge

Phinda Game Reserve, South Africa

luxurious private pool at phinda mountain lodge

Phinda Game Reserve , in KwaZulu Natal, is home to some of the most beautiful, luxurious lodges in South Africa.

The best by far is Mountain Lodge. As the name says, this is located in such a way as to afford beautiful views across the bushveld to panoramic mountains.

The lodge is blissfully isolated on top of a hill. Once there, you will walk to the common areas where you will find the dining area, where a decadent breakfast and lunch, as well as afternoon tea are offered every day.

So much care is taken in the selection of the ingredients that you even have a choice of several types of coffee and roasts. The common area is also where the bar is located, with a seating area directly facing the mountains, for incredible views.

On the way to your room, you will find the beautiful pool and the spa, perfect for a relaxing afternoon – before you drive away on one of the game drives.

Rooms are incredibly comfortable, with large beds with a pillow menu; a sitting area with a fridge and all sorts of drinks and snacks.

There is a deck with a plunge pool – a favorite of local wildlife which is free to roam the grounds. It is not uncommon to spot nyalas and at times even elephants drinking from the pool!,

There is also a very spacious bathroom with a large shower and a Victorian-style bathtub.

At Phinda Mountain Lodge you will feel welcome, pampered and you will be able to fully relax while enjoying nature and the unique wildlife of this part of the country.

Singita Sweni Lodge

 • Kruger National Park, South Africa

Singita sweni luxurious safari lodge

Singita Sweni

Located in Kruger National Park, Singita Sweni Lodge epitomizes the definition of a lux eco-safari stay.

The lodge is located on 33,000 acres of exclusive concession land on the banks of the Sweni River. This meant that hippos, crocs, elephants, and other wildlife can often be spotted meandering past the lodge.

Singita Sweni Lodge offers an intimate setting far away from the crowds associated with Kruger National Park .

There are only seven large luxurious suites on-site and each one is designed to bring the outdoors in.

They have large floor-to-ceiling windows, big wooden decks, and modern decor with natural elements incorporated into the design.

For us, one of the highlights of staying at Singita Sweni was their strong focus on sustainability.

They have an ethos of “touching the earth lightly” and their efforts were visible in every element of our stay. All meals are crafted with seasonal produce and sourced from local suppliers.

Plus, Singita Sweni Lodge is involved in a number of conservation and social initiatives in the community. One such project was the creation of their solar power plant. Its implementation has meant the lodge can save close to 1,000 tonnes of carbon emissions a year.

Of course, we also loved the morning and afternoon game drives. We had many wonderful sightings of lions, giraffes, zebras, elephants, buffalos, hippos, waterbucks, and other antelopes.

Plus we came across the most unique sighting of them all – a unique white lion, spotted only in this part of Kruger National Park!

If you are looking into a safari in Africa we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Singita Sweni Lodge for an eco-lux experience. It’s a truly one of a kind destination.

Zebra Hills Safari Lodge

Manyoni Private Game Reserve

Zebra Hills Safari Lodge - super luxury safari lodge

Zebra Hills is nestled in the private game reserve of Manyoni in Zululand, and is a sure shot delight for wildlife enthusiasts.

Being part of a private reserve gives the lodge owners and guides a lot of flexibility in terms of game-watching and safari hours.

This is one of the highlights, alongside the spectacular zebra-themed decor in the bedrooms, common areas, bar, and dining room.

The perks of living in a private reserve are aplenty, but my favorite bit was enjoying traditional braai in the evenings whilst you wait for the lions to come for a refreshing sip of water in the adjoining water hole.

This is the only place where I have watched lions on foot. Yes, that’s right. The waterhole is just across the swimming pool/barbeque area and if you stay put, it is easy to spot a few thirsty beasts loitering around to quench their thirst.

With no restrictions on safari hours, the night safaris offered umpteen nocturnal sightings with our top game sightings of the day being three cheetah cubs on a kill followed by a charging black rhino.

Such sightings are a dream for true wildlife lovers and Zebra Hills, with its ultra-luxury sleeps and skilled naturalists, made our dream vacation come true.

 • I have been on two glamping safari trips in Africa on two very different budgets.
 • My all-inclusive stay was great but my cheaper glamping experience was fine, too.
 • Private game reserves are actually the most important thing to splurge on, not accommodations.

I've been on two African safari trips . Both involved glamping but on completely different budgets.

My first more affordable trip, a lodge in South Africa with separate safari excursions, cost me about $1,100. My second, an all-inclusive lodge in Tanzania, cost me about $4,000 after a 50% off deal.

Here's how the two compare and what I think you should look for before you plan an African safari .

The first time I went on a safari, I went to Kruger National Park in South Africa. My affordable safari experience was at Jackalberry Ridge, where some tents cost $80 a night.

The first time I went on a safari, I went to Kruger National Park in South Africa. I didn't book a tour package, instead opting to stay at affordable lodging and book safari day trips to the park.

I stayed five nights near Kruger and one night in Johannesburg before my flight home. I spent around $1,100 for lodging, safari tours, a rental car, and food (not including flights).

After landing in Johannesburg, I rented a car ($130 for five days) to drive to my lodging in Marloth Park, a town bordering the edge of Kruger National Park.

I was staying at Jackalberry Ridge , a self-catering accommodation with no on-site restaurant, no room service, and limited housekeeping.

The one-bedroom tents at Jackalberry Ridge go for as low as $80 a night, and two-bedroom tents go for $135.

When I checked in late, there was no one at the reception desk — just an envelope with my name on it containing my keys and a map.

I had booked a two-bedroom unit (two tents), but my friend couldn't come at the last minute. My main tent felt pretty spacious, with a king bed and a living-room area.

I had booked a two-bedroom unit (two tents), but my friend couldn't come at the last minute. Since I couldn't change the reservation, I still stayed in the two-bedroom unit and my friend paid her share.

The campsite came with a small pool to dip in, but it was covered as the weather was pretty cold.

Each unit had a private bathroom and kitchen in a building separate from the tents, so I needed to leave my tent to use the bathroom at night.

This is glamping, so I had access to running water and a flushing toilet. The bathroom was standard, with a tub, shower, and toilet.

This is glamping, so I had access to running water and a flushing toilet. I had hot water, but I found it went from scalding hot to cold in a few seconds.

I ended up taking quick showers and just washing my hair with cold water, which wasn't ideal since it was a little chilly in the morning.

It's also worth noting that Jackalberry Ridge was renovated recently, so the issue I had with hot water may have been fixed now.

The kitchen was well-equipped with things like pots, a microwave, and a sink, so I could cook meals or heat up leftovers.

I also had access to a kitchen in the same building as the bathroom.

The kitchen was well-equipped with things like pots, a microwave, and a sink, so I could cook meals or heat up leftovers.

Although I had a rental car and could've done a self-drive safari around Kruger, I didn't trust myself to spot animals while focusing on the roads.

Instead, I signed up for a couple of day safaris and one night safari. The safari tour prices often don't include the park entrance fee (about $25 per person per day), which I paid when I got to the entrance.

My three safari trips and park fees came to around $280.

I signed up for a couple of day safaris and did one at night.

For my next safari trip, I leveled up.

I saw a Travelzoo deal for an all-inclusive safari at Taasa Lodge , a five-star luxury safari in Tanzania.

The deal was $6,000 for two people for a whole week — the lodge is usually $12,950 for two for seven nights. It was still a splurge, but I'd be saving more than 50% on a bucket-list experience.

The package came with seven nights of lodging, two safari activities a day, three daily meals, and drinks.

Still, we spent more than the original advertised price. There are obligatory "daily government park fees" and "daily concession fees" that added about $893 per person to our bill.

We also had to take a regional flight to get to Taasa, which was more expensive than my rental car in South Africa.

To redeem the Travelzoo deal, we had to complete our booking through a specific travel agency.

We ended up opting for an all-inclusive add-on package which includes the $893 fees above, domestic airfares from Arusha to Taasa (which would already cost around $600), and our agency arranging our Tanzanian tourist visa and airport transfers. The add-on also included extra activities at the resort (more on that later).

Overall, we paid $1,715 per person on top of the $3,000 each for the lodge stay.

I hadn't anticipated paying so many extras, but it was nice to have someone take care of the logistics of getting to the resort.

When I arrived at the lodge, the staff greeted me with a glass of juice and a wet towel to refresh myself.

My tent was quite spacious. My tent was luxurious and equipped with a comfortable king bed and a large living room.

When I arrived at the lodge, the staff greeted me with a glass of juice and a wet towel to refresh myself.

My tent was quite spacious. I especially liked that it had a desk and plenty of outlets I could use to charge my electronics. Our bathroom was behind our bed, and I was glad it was inside the tent this time.

We also got a butler who kept track of our schedules and made sure we had what we needed.

The shower's hot water was great and we had double sinks we could get ready at.

Another perk of the lodge is that we could have staff do our laundry every day, which meant we could pack less clothing.

The bathroom felt spacious, with two sinks and a shower.

The shower's hot water was great and we had double sinks we could get ready at.

Another perk of the lodge is that we could have staff do our laundry every day, which meant we could pack less clothing.

We got breakfast at the buffet in the main lodge unless we were going on a morning safari.

Most people ate dinner in the dining room, but we could've requested to have food brought to our tent.

There's a main lodge with a communal living room, dining area, and bar.

We got breakfast at the buffet in the main lodge unless we were going on a morning safari.

Most people ate dinner in the dining room, but we could've requested to have food brought to our tent.

The pool was on the small side, but certainly had great views.

I didn't end up using it as my afternoons were filled with safari, and the mornings and evenings were chilly.

We also passed a small pool next to the main lodge.

The pool was on the small side, but certainly had great views.

I didn't end up using it as my afternoons were filled with safari, and the mornings and evenings were chilly.

Safari breakfasts consisted of hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, doughnuts, bacon and sausage, fruits, and orange juice. Staff also made French-press coffee, which we could spike with cream liqueur.

Our Land Cruiser had a cooler of beers and sodas in the back, too.

On the mornings with an early safari, we had a simple breakfast next to our Land Cruiser.

At the private game reserve, we got pretty close to wildlife.

Taasa is located inside a private game reserve, which means staff can pretty much drive anywhere within it. This was a huge leg up from my day trips in Kruger National Park on my last safari.

Inside national parks like Kruger or Serengeti, you're only allowed to drive on designated roads for safety reasons (both for the tourists and the animals).

But in a private reserve, guides can drive offroad. Plus, the guides communicate with each other when they find something special.

We also left the reserve to spend a couple of days going into Serengeti National Park, as there were things you could only find there instead of within the private reserve.

For example, I'd planned my trip to take place during the Great Migration, and I wanted to see wildebeests crossing the Mara River.

We also went to Serengeti to find rhinoceros and hippopotamus.

We saw a bunch of animals in the private reserve and Serengeti.

Every dinner at the resort consisted of three courses: soup, an entrée, and a dessert.

The main course was usually some type of Western food, and there was always a vegetarian option.

It would've been nice to be offered more typical Tanzanian dishes, though. For me, part of the fun of traveling is learning about different countries' cuisines.

I also had access to an open bar in the main lodge. Staff could make simple cocktails, and there was lots of beer and wine. The drinks were all included with the price of the stay (except for fancy Champagnes and select wines).

One morning, we had a special breakfast on the plains.

On one day of the trip, we had a special bush breakfast. It was one of the extra activities we got with that special add-on package.

Instead of our usual safari breakfast, we had freshly prepared omelets in the wild.

When you're offroading looking for wild animals, you can end up pretty far from a proper toilet.

On most safari days, the car stops (when guides think it's safe), and people go behind the car to do their business.

This was the only time we had this portable toilet while out on a safari. We also got another special treat in the bush that morning — a toilet!

When you're offroading looking for wild animals, you can end up pretty far from a proper toilet.

On most safari days, the car stops (when guides think it's safe), and people go behind the car to do their business.

This was the only time we had this portable toilet while out on a safari. On my budget safari day trips at Kruger, we'd have to wait until we reached a rest-stop facility.

After breakfast, we were back in safari mode.

We found a family of lions, and as we were in the private reserve, we were able to stay and watch the cubs play for quite a while.

At Kruger, when lions are spotted, traffic starts backing up on the road as all the safari cruisers stop to look, so you can't stay too long.

Here, we knew no one else would be coming.

Again, we spent a lot of time watching lions.

The communication between guides in the private reserve paid off when one spotted a sleeping leopard.

When our group arrived, the leopard was napping on the tree next to his catch. Eventually, it came down, and we got a better look.

On a different morning, our guide got a tip that another car had found a leopard sleeping.

The communication between guides in the private reserve paid off when one spotted a sleeping leopard.

When our group arrived, the leopard was napping on the tree next to his catch. Eventually, it came down, and we got a better look.

Our trip ended with a great happy hour and outdoor dinner.

Other activities that were part of our add-on package included a visit to a Maasai village in Kenya and a special happy hour and barbecue dinner.

And, for our journey home, the travel agency took care of everything, including transfers, until we boarded our international flight.

In my opinion, the difference between these two safari trips that's the most worth paying for is being in a private reserve.

After all, the main reason I fly to Africa is for the safari, not the glamping.

I much preferred my lodging at Taasa, mostly because of the bathroom. Some lodges inside private reserves, like Shindzela or Rhino River Lodge, can cost around $250 per person per night.

My big takeaway is that it's really worth paying to be inside a private reserve.

In my opinion, the difference between these two safari trips that's the most worth paying for is being in a private reserve.

After all, the main reason I fly to Africa is for the safari, not the glamping.

I much preferred my lodging at Taasa, mostly because of the bathroom. But if I hadn't had the 50% off deal, I'm not sure the full price would've been worth it.
