At A Glance

Trek's previous incarnation of the Top Fuel was retired in 2012 with the appearance of the Superfly, pretty much as Trek ditched the 26” wheel size on its cross-country line-up in favour of the 29” rolling stock we have become used to in the last few years. 2015 saw Trek launch a new XC range, the Procaliber hardtail and the return of the 100mm Top Fuel, full suspension, which we have on test. The bikes geometry and style has a racing focus, designed to fit the more technical cross-country courses that are around these days and longer stage racing where full suspension pays dividends in minimising fatigue.

The range consists of two alloy versions, the Top Fuel 8 and 9 (with a women’s specific 8) and 2 carbon versions: the 9.8 and range-topping 9.9. Boost hubs front and back, clever cable routing named 'Control Freak Routing' is able to accommodate pretty much any set up required, 1x, 2x, dropper post etc. The Mino Link allows the user to alter the ride geometry and a single combined lockout for front/rear suspension is controlled from the bars. Trek has also introduced what they call 'Smart Wheel Strategy' into the mix, all this really means is that if you choose the 15.5” frame you get 27.5” wheels rather than the 29” that’s on all the other frame sizes and gives a better fit for the smaller rider.

On The Trail

Our test bike was the well spec'd Top Fuel 9 model which feature mostly XT level components with the Rockshox SID XX on the front and a Monarch XX on the rear. I loved the hydraulic Pushloc that locked or released them both at the same time, sure the cockpit was a little busy with cables, but in my opinion well worth it for climbs and sprints. I guess my only reservation would be the maintenance and bleeding of a combined system, which might prove awkward.

Trek Top Fuel 9

The in-house Bontrager Mustang PRO wheels are tubeless ready, as are the XR1 tyres that come as stock. The whole package on the 17.5” frame ,out of the box with XT pedals, came in at 28.5lbs. Serious racers will find that a little on the heavy side and will probably have to open their wallet slightly wider for the 9.8 or 9.9 (9.9 coming in at under 22lbs!), but for the rest of us setting up tubeless and the odd component upgrade would easily knock off a couple of pounds.

I fiddled with the Mino link a few times, it’s a small “chip” located on the seat stay/rocker junction and easy to swap round with an Allen key, the higher position giving 70.9 degree head angle and 34.1cm bottom bracket height compared to the low setting at 70 degrees and 33cm bottom bracket height. I settled for the low, as it suited me better so it was left there for the majority of my riding.

Over the past couple of months I’ve put probably over 1000 miles on the bike, riding everything from the 2012 Olympic course at Hadleigh in England to a bunch of trails in North Scotland. The bike's hugely capable, 700mm bars, 435mm short chain stays coupled with the Boost wheels front and back, definitely add up to a nice solid bike that is happy to be pushed hard on what would be considered a technical trail for XC riders. I’ve swung a leg over plenty of super-light bikes in the past and they are great for climbing, but sketchy as hell on the loose stuff and descents, so it’s all about getting the balance right and this bike feels incredibly dialled for long days in the saddle.

The tried and tested full floater suspension platform

The old Superfly had the swing link for the rear shock, but the Top Fuel takes a leaf out of the EX and Remedy’s book with the EVO link allowing a Full Floater design. It’s a proven success and works well in giving a really progressive shock action, you definitely feel like you get the full 100mm of travel on offer. The shock doesn’t incorporate the RE:Aktiv technology seen in the EX and Remedy yet, but we are told that may come in the future. One drawback for those looking at longer rides is that the design eats up one of the spaces for a second water bottle. This is an important factor on long races, so you’d find yourself having to look for seat post mounting which in turn takes up the space where many carry a small tool bag. It’s swings and roundabouts really, but also something to be aware of if that’s the kind of riding you have in mind.

The drivetrain is one by eleven, nothing new here and it’s a setup that the majority of XC riders use now, offering a big spread on the 10-42 cassette. The stock chainring is 32 tooth which is a good “in the middle” range, if you're aiming to conquer long steep hills then you can slap a 30 on there in a few minutes as the crank doesn’t need to come off. I’ve found that I can get away with a 30 or 34 with no change in the chain length. The X1 shifter and mech are solid performers, just remember to keep the mech GT85’d after the wet rides and it won’t let you down. The XT brakes are ideal especially with the 180 rotor up front - certainly no issues there.

Geometry is quite a personal thing, sure you can bracket some of the numbers and angles into race XC, trail, all-mountain and the rest, but within that it’s a lot to do with what we are used to. I, personally, found I had to fit a slight lay back seat post to “open” up the cockpit a little, that’s just me though as I like riding low and fast. Once set up, I found the bike incredibly compliant with a definite 'part of the bike', rather than 'on the bike' feel. I had no issues confidently pushing the bike hard no matter what the trail. All frames also come with a lifetime warranty for the original owner, peace of mind at least against any manufacturing issues, no matter how long you have the bike

Monarch XX rear shock

The geometry may be focused on speed yet the Top Fuel 9 gives a great riding position for hours in the saddle. Whereas the Top Fuel 9.9 has already seen a stage win at this year’s Cape Epic, the “9” would be a great bike for anyone who enjoys thrashing round trail centres or simply getting from A to B as quickly and efficient as possible with the odd race thrown in along the way. In addition, the ‘Kermit The Frog’ green colourway looks fantastic in the flesh, easy for your mates to spot you out in front as you leave them for dust on the trails…

Sram 1x11 set up§

Shimano xt brakes, a great looking machine from every angle., fully integrated suspension lock outs, bontrager saddle, aluminium frame, the mino link allows you to tune the geometry.

Trek Top Fuel 9 review

Race-light whippet

trek top fuel 9 2016

For skilled, time-hardened riders willing to put in the effort to show it who’s boss, Trek's aluminium race whippet is capable of stunning cross-country speed – a purist racer’s racer. But a laid-back all-rounder the Top Fuel 9 most certainly isn’t, so for trail use there are better options out there.

Ride & handling: Race-light whippet that's a capable but demanding ride at speed

From the moment you wheel the Trek out of the front door, it imparts a sense of straining at the leash. Its slender tube profiles, light wheels and a compact cockpit with no-nonsense straight bars are all so racy. Throw in a steep seat angle and a low weight, and it’s no wonder that it feels as though it’s going to rocket towards the horizon at the first turn of the pedals.

There’s no doubt that Trek’s rear suspension setup works extremely well. The rear axle pivot point and ‘full floater’ setup – which puts the Fox Float RP23 shock between the one-piece rocker and the swingarm – combines with a well thought out shock leverage ratio to create one of the most supple rear ends we’ve ridden. Switch the shock’s ProPedal compression damping off, point the Top Fuel up a rooty climb and marvel at the way the rear wheel sticks to the ground.

There’s no fuss, no squishiness and no unwanted bobbing. Invisible suspension is our favourite kind, and Trek have got it sussed (pun intended). The Top Fuel is a climber’s dream – all the speed and light weight of a hardtail with all the ground-sucking potential of a full-susser. If you thought suspension was a hindrance uphill, Trek’s engineers are out to prove that exactly the opposite is the case – they’ve pulled that off convincingly here.

Cashing in those gravity credits isn’t quite so much fun though, thanks to the Top Fuel's nervy, attention-seeking geometry and the very light build. It’s certainly possible to pilot it down rocky descents at speed, but you’ll need well-honed reflexes and a deft touch to hold it to a chosen line. If its climbing performance is defined by an uncanny ability to keep the rear wheel planted, that’s not as true at speed. While the suspension continues to work well, svelte wheels and tube profiles make it difficult to avoid bouncing off course. It’s fast, sure – but only in the right hands.

Equipment: Great spec with light build and supple-but-responsive suspension to boot

Despite being overshadowed by its £3,750, carbon-framed big brother, the Top Fuel 9’s clearly been on a racer’s diet. Comfortably below the 25lb mark for a 100mm-travel bike at this price is pretty respectable. When you’re pounding out the miles in search of a better race result, that kind of difference can matter – psychologically, if not strictly physiologically.

There’s no one single reason to attribute for Trek’s svelte build, although details such as the magnesium rocker link, aluminium spoke nipples, carbon seatpost and full Shimano XT kit undoubtedly help. Yes, you did read that right – the Top Fuel 9 boasts a complete XT group, right down to the brakes. Wheels, tyres and finishing kit are all high-end, in-house Bontrager.

On the suspension front, the Trek has a characteristically active rear end. Up front, RockShox’s evergreen SID race fork takes care of its duties with typical aplomb, and can be locked out in a second from the bar-mounted lever. There’s nothing here that needs changing, although the plain rubber grips do look a tad stingy next to the fancy lock-ons sported by most of the competition.

Trek Top Fuel 9.9 SL Review

trek top fuel 9 2016

“I can’t, I’m not allowed, I shouldn’t…” – seriously, this is old news. The change is too risky, the route too hard, the political correctness too correct. For issue #18 we threw all those concerns overboard and got hold of the absolute sickest bikes money can (not) buy. We at ENDURO are convinced: Dreams can come true!

This article is part of our magazine feature: Dreams Come True – 7 Incredible Bike Builds.

Trek Top Fuel 9.9 SL

The Trek Top Fuel.

Once on the Trek Top Fuel, all you want to do is ride the sh*t out of it. From the first turn of the cranks, the bikes gives that race feel, the red mist descends and all you’re doing is sprinting full gas, grinning like a maniac. A gentle warm up? Nah, forget about it.

The four walls of our office have never welcomed such a fast and uncompromising XC rocket as the brand-new Trek Top Fuel 9.9 SL. Whether the two figures in its name refer to the weight, we’re not sure, but it appears to coincide with the scales. With a frame size of 19.5″, it comes up as a tidy 9.9kg. Damn light!

This bike is insanely light!

While the airy weight is achieved through their well-considered selection of only the best parts around, Trek have also ensured that these share a common look. Said look is enhanced by the presence of the sexy DT Swiss XMC 1200 Spline wheels, the Shimano XTR drivetrain, and the lightweight Bontrager carbon parts. The RockShox 100mm suspension comprises an RS-1 fork and Monarch XX rear shock, both of which can be locked-out from the bars – simultaneously, we should add, giving you the sense of reaching the top of a rollercoaster, perched on the edge ready for the drop. There’s only one direction the Trek wants to take you, and that’s forwards! Every single watt exerted through the carbon soles of your lightweight XC shoes is transferred instantly through the pedals, and we’ve never had as much fun on ascents as on this bike, unable to wipe the smug grins from our faces.

With every up comes a down, and the Trek’s lightweight and powerful nature has a downside, which takes the form of braking traction – or rather, lack of. If you’re used to grippy tyres and 180 mm disc brakes, then you’ll be dismayed as you try to decelerate with the XTR brakes before a hairpin. But perhaps that’s fair, after all – isn’t braking cheating? The fact of the matter is, when you combine all of the SL’s strengths with a permanently extended saddle, you just want to log lots of miles with lots of climbing, and the trails keep calling.

This things climbs crazily good!

  • Very powerful.
  • Super lightweight.
  • Ultra chic.
  • Weak brakes.

Much like a Ferrari, the Trek Top Fuel 9.9 SL knows what speed is, giving a whole new definition to the term power. Anyone with their sights set on crushing some dreams in a MTB marathon should definitely get their hands on this racing machine. However, it works just as well on post-work jaunts when your lungs are screaming and the sweat is dripping.

2018 Trek Top Fuel

This bike sold in one day, but we've got other hot bikes at our Mountain Bike Collection here .

I look up at a hard climb, legs burning, heart about to burst, lungs struggling for air, and I decide to ignore all the pain and sprint up as fast as I can. When I get home, I look at a bag of cookies and decide, miraculously, to not eat it all in one sitting. I’m not my usual self. What’s happened to me? I blame race season. That time of year when I get beat every week by 90-pound teenagers and middle-aged men who can pedal like diesel engines. That time of year when I kick myself for every day last winter spent on the couch, not training. But I ride on, dreaming of the victories to come. Maybe I will realize these dreams with this special secret weapon: the Top Fuel 9.9, Trek’s top-of-the-line XC race bike. Stiff, light, and with modern geometry, it’s a bike meant to go fast. This isn’t just any Top Fuel either. As an RSL, Race Shop Limited, the same bike ridden by Trek’s best athletes it doesn’t get any more pro than this.

The first thing your eye is drawn to is a SRAM XX1 Eagle groupset, which provides 12 gears, a 500% range, and plenty of gold bling to show off the bike’s race-winning intentions.

Sram XX1 Eagle Drivetrain

The drivetrain spins a stiff and anorexic set of SRAM Rise 60 carbon wheels, weighing in at just over 1400g.

2018 Trek Top Fuel

To bring it all to a stop are SRAM’s top-end Level Ultimate brakes with carbon levers and titanium hardware.

Trek Top Fuel

Out front is a RockShox SID World Cup, a pro-level cross country fork with the new Charger damper which provides less friction, and a stiffer and lighter carbon steerer and crown.

2018 Trek Top Fuel

Providing the suspension in the rear is a Fox Float with Trek’s newest Re:Aktiv damping technology. Developed with the help of F1 suspension experts, Penske Racing, Re:Aktiv uses unique damping to help the shock react to what you’re riding, staying supportive and firm for pedaling, while still allowing it to open up to provide instant plushness for small bumps and big hits. This means you can leave the shock alone while riding and just let it work.

2018 Trek Top Fuel

Trek’s Mino-link chip in the rear triangle allows you to adjust the geometry to your liking, raising or lowering the bottom bracket by 10mm, and changing the head angle by 1°. In my opinion, the bike will ride best in the lower and slacker position, which is how most will choose to ride it.

Trek Top Fuel

The lower option makes the bike more stable at speed, allowing you to descend more confidently while expending less energy. To improve things even more, this Top Fuel 9.9 RSL comes with a RockShox Reverb dropper post, an increasingly more common sight on XC bikes as they become more capable and cross-country tracks become more rugged. To me, droppers are the best thing to happen to mountain biking, and the key to extracting the most speed from your bike going downhill.

This Top Fuel is the complete package, no upgrades required. It’s a bike that simply begs to be ridden fast. Someday, when I can justify buying it for myself, it will be my XC weapon of choice, and I will surely dominate all. But for now, it can be yours, and you will probably beat me on it.

Swing a leg over the Trek Top Fuel 9 and the first thing you notice is the suspension is keen to get working. It’s a seriously rapid bike on the trails.

Rewarding ride provided by the Re:aktiv suspension.

SRAM X1 groupset performed flawlessly.

Handling is marred by the miniscule bar width.

Tyres are inappropriate for most British conditions.
