Of course, taxis are very common in Singapore, but only stop at designated stands to drop you off once you’re in the city to curb traffic and make the drop-off process smoother for the city. Singapore doesn’t host ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft currently. The city’s trishaws are mostly a tourist activity now, so be careful not to pay too much for one. 

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

Scenic Eclipse II Arrives in Australia for Inaugural Oceania Voyages

The Scenic Eclipse II has officially arrived in Australia, marking a grand entrance into Sydney Harbor this morning, according to a press release.

The 228-guest will embark on a two-year series of voyages in the Oceania region, the company said.

The arrival of Scenic Eclipse II in Sydney Harbour was a significant event for the Australian-founded Scenic Group, as the ship made its first port of call in Newcastle on April 22, the city where Scenic was established 38 years ago.

After its showcase in Sydney, Scenic Eclipse II will set sail on its inaugural Australian journey, the first in a series of discovery voyages spanning from 2024 to early 2026. The itineraries will cover the Queensland coastline, including the Great Barrier Reef and its islands, the Northern Territory and Kimberley region, and the coast of Western Australia in 2025. Adventurous guests can also experience the South Pacific, South East Asia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, remote East Antarctica, and the Ross Sea region.

When cruises are cheaper than trains and planes

P lanes, trains and automobiles may be the obvious and often most cost-effective ways to get from A to B but, surprisingly, cruise ships can be, too.

Repositioning sailings are the unsung bargains of the cruise world, where canny travellers can often pick up voyages at vastly reduced rates – and give more orthodox forms of transport a run for their money.

The key to finding such a deal comes from studying cruise schedules for sailings – some of which may be just one or two nights – that go directly from one place to another. 

While low-cost flights are generally accepted as the cheapest way to travel internationally, global airfares are on the rise – and by the time you pile on charges for luggage, food and drink and the cost of travelling from the airport to the city centre – where cruise ships invariably dock – taking the sea-going route can emerge as the unlikely winner (and you’ll arrive in considerably more style).

It can even work for travelling to different parts of the UK, though options tend to be restricted to Fred Olsen Cruise Lines when it repositions ships on overnight voyages between the likes of Southampton and Newcastle, Rosyth or other ports further north. 

Italy to Spain from £54

For city-hopping stays in and around Europe, MSC Cruises is the one to watch, as it enables customers to book many of its Mediterranean cruises on a port-to-port basis, rather than taking the entire voyage.

For instance, travellers can book one-nighters between Genoa and Barcelona or Genoa and Marseilles for as little as £54pp, while an overnight sailing between Valencia and Marseilles is £72pp, with these prices obviously including meals. The £54 figure is based on an October 11 departure. For a flight from Genoa to Barcelona on the same date, Skyscanner (skyscanner.net) quotes a service with ITA Airways for £111.99pp, including luggage.

Tony Andrews, the managing director of travel agency cruise.co.uk, says: “MSC doesn’t talk about this enough, as these one-nighters are a great way for people to have a city-break-style experience with a cruise as part of it. It’s a really interesting way to do it.”

The leisurely way to cross the pond

Transatlantic crossings are another potential area to pick up a sea-going bargain, but it’s a question of waiting until the price is right, as rates continually fluctuate.

Many lines offer transatlantic repositionings in spring and autumn, while Cunard runs the only regular crossings between Southampton and New York on its liner Queen Mary 2.

On one occasion some years ago, when prices dropped to just a few hundred pounds, I was sailing from Southampton on the QM2 and met a passenger who had opted to do the same purely because the rates were so much cheaper than flying and he wasn’t in a rush (the crossing takes a week).

Cunard’s prices have since risen overall, but there are still reduced rates on some departures that make this tactic worth pursuing if you fancy a more leisurely way to cross the pond.

Alison Earnshaw, the managing director of online agencies Cruise 118 and Six Star Cruises, says that when rates drop to £600 or £700, taking the ocean route becomes more cost-effective as transatlantic flights have become so expensive.

Another plus is the lack of luggage restrictions, because on cruises you can famously take as much as will fit in your cabin.

“We’ve had people booking to sail to see family in the States with lots of luggage that they’re taking out for them, and then flying back lighter,” she explains. “Alternatively, we’ve had customers who’ve flown to New York for the shopping and sail back as they can bring as much as they want.”

Swap Blighty for Barbados – for £1,129

The Caribbean is another region that comes up trumps for value, with P&O Cruises offering a two-week repositioning voyage from Southampton to Barbados (with stops in Antigua, St Kitts and St Lucia) from £1,129. This price is for an October 18 departure, and includes the flight back to Britain. 

A return fare to Barbados with British Airways (including luggage) during the same period is £733pp. Inter-island flights with Caribbean Airlines (caribbean-airlines.com) between Barbados and other islands in this itinerary amount to approximately £714pp. Add in hotel stays and it’s clear just how much you can save by taking to the water. 

Going global

Miles Morgan, the founder of Miles Morgan Travel, cited world cruises as another option for good-value deals, when cruise companies carve itineraries into segments if they haven’t been selling well, enabling customers to buy legs such as Sydney to Singapore.

“You need to look at sailings a few months in advance, as this is when they tend to be carved up,” he says. “So look now for autumn sailings and at Christmas for the spring. There might be nothing going or you might do well.”

I soon found a 17-night sector of a world cruise on Cunard’s Queen Victoria, departing Singapore on March 26 and arriving in Cape Town on April 12. It calls at Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Port Elizabeth in South Africa. From £1,099pp, not including flights, it works out at £64pp a night – about the same as a Travelodge. 

Flights for the same routing between Singapore and Cape Town for the same time period via Skyscanner amount to approximately £1,150pp, including luggage. Another win for the cruise.

Once described by a colonial judge as the ‘Nile of New South Wales’, the tranquil waters of the Hawkesbury River are perfect for a weekend escape or short break. A wonderful way to relax and soak up the natural beauty of the river is a houseboat holiday. Cast a line   

Spanning 470km, the Hawkesbury-Nepean is the longest coastal catchment in NSW, meaning there are plenty of places along the river and tributaries to cast a line. Best known for producing some of the state’s largest mulloway (fish exceeding 1.6m and 40kg have been taken from these waters), the waterways are also known for bream, snapper, tailor, dusky flathead, Australian salmon and whiting. Also, come winter, plenty of keen anglers brave the cold to chase the mysterious hairtail in locations like Cowan Creek. There are boat ramps at various locations, including Governor Phillip Park, Parsley Bay and Wisemans Ferry, and a number of companies offer boat hire, such as  Berowra Waters Boat Hire  and Hawkesbury Afloat .

Tour a pearl farm   

The pristine waters of the Hawkesbury River are home to the only pearl farm on the east coast of Australia.  Broken Bay Pearl Farm  specialises in growing the rare akoya pearls, prized around the world for their outstanding lustre, and the private four-hour tour immerses you in the intricacies of pearl farming. Enjoy the breeze on your face as you take to the water to see how pearls are grown and harvested, before returning to solid land to learn how the value of each pearl is assessed. You will even get hands-on experience grading pearls yourself, before choosing a pearl of your own to take home.

Paddle out on a kayak  

Kayaking is a lovely way to enjoy the river. Hire your own from  Hawkesbury River Kayaks , perfectly situated to set off for a few hours paddling around Dangar Island, or take a weekend to travel upstream and camp at a secluded beach, exploring Jerusalem Bay and enjoying lunch at picturesque Cottage Point along the way. If you plan ahead , you can book the company’s Riverbend Cottage for an evening, located halfway between Brooklyn and Berowra Waters, allowing you to take a leisurely pace knowing there’s a comfy bed and shower waiting for you at the end of the day.  

If you’d rather have the experts show you the way, join a guided tour with  Southern Cross Kayaking . Departing from various locations, including Colo River and Calabash Bay, the tours run for four hours and travel around 8km, passing by scenic ‘water only’ access homes, picturesque creeks and mangrove forests en route. As you venture downstream, the guides will teach you about the area’s history, and point out birds and wildlife, before stopping for refreshments.

Get the adrenaline pumping  

For thrillseekers, the Hawkesbury is a popular waterway for a range of water sports.  Jet Ski Safaris  are the only tour company to offer unlicensed jet ski tours – whizz past islands and under towering sandstone cliffs, before stopping off at Spencer for a drink and a snack (trust us, you will have worked up an appetite after tackling all those hairpin bends). Black Diamond Wakeboarding School is owned and operated by rider/coach Scotty Kell, who tailors lessons for families, corporate groups and large groups of friends looking for a fun time out on the water. Meanwhile waterskiing, barefooting and knee-boarding lessons are available with Hawkesbury Watersports , catering to all skill levels from first-timers to advanced.

Cruise the waters on a paddlewheeler  

Operating for over 35 years from historic Windsor, join your host Ian and his friendly crew aboard the  Hawkesbury Paddlewheeler  to step back in time to the 1800s when steamships travelled the waterway. While taking in the peace and tranquillity of the river, guests are served a first-class meal and refreshments, and given live commentary on the history of the boat, river and local legends. Be sure to visit the wheelhouse during the 2.5-hour tour to chat with the skipper.

For the residents who live along some of the Hawkesbury River’s more far-flung islands and riverfronts, the water is the only way in and out. For more than 100 years, the  Riverboat Postman  has been delivering mail to these isolated homes, and these days visitors can join the idyllic mail run. On the two-hour trip from Brooklyn wharf, you’ll go past Dangar Island; former mental asylum islands Peat Island and Milson Island; luxury glamping accommodation at Bar Island; plus tiny riverside neighbourhoods, lush mangroves, oyster farms, and forested escarpments. The skippers are local with plenty of stories to tell, and onboard service includes a delicious ploughman’s lunch.

Job summary:, glendale strategic sourcing intern, fall 2024, about the role & program, "we create happiness." that's our motto at walt disney parks and resorts. and it permeates everything we do. at disney, you'll help inspire that magic by enabling our teams to push the limits of entertainment and create the never-before-seen as a strategic sourcing intern, you will have the unique opportunity to assist with a variety of projects within our strategic sourcing department., responsibilities :, perform data analysis to find opportunities for cost reduction and value creation (improved quality, cost, service and compliance), perform liaison work between strategic sourcing and key clients, ensuring efficient supply chain methods, provide support for sourcing projects, including data analysis and supplier interface, facilitate supplier presentations, develop and implement erfis/erfqs/erfps/eauctions, participate in supplier negotiations, perform external market assessment and opportunity analysis, develop and handle partner and supplier relationships and contract implementations, develop and implement sourcing strategies in alignment with business initiatives and priorities., required qualifications & skills, strong digital literacy including microsoft word, excel and powerpoint, excellent communication and leadership skills, ability to take ownership and drive projects to completion with minimal supervision, professional demeanor, focused, eloquent and well organized, currently enrolled as a junior, senior or graduate student at an accredited college/university, earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree., preferred education, currently pursuing, or recently graduated with, an mba engineering, business administration, legal studies or related field., cumulative overall gpa of 3.0 or higher (no rounding), eligibility requirements & program information, must be enrolled in an accredited college/university taking at least one class in the semester/quarter (spring/fall) prior to participation in the internship program or must have graduated from a college/university within 6 months or currently participating in a disney college program or disney professional internship., must be at least 18 years of age, must not have completed one year of continual employment on a disney internship or program., must possess unrestricted work authorization, location of position:  this position has opportunities in glendale, ca, program length:  the approximate dates of this internship are june 2024 - december 2024, candidate must be available to work full time hours (approximately 40 hours per week) for the duration of the internship, transportation and housing: must provide reliable transportation and own housing., about walt disney world resort:.
