Countries citizens which do not require a visa to enter Georgia:

Citizens of 26 EU member states have the right to enter Georgia without a visa and stay inside the country for a full year. They can enter the country holding a travel document or an identity card issued in the European Union. This rule also applies to citizens of Great Britain and the overseas territories of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - Bermuda, Cayman, British Virgin Islands, Falklands, Turks and Caicos, Gibraltar, Jersey, Guernsey, and Isle of Man.

Who needs a visa and exemption to enter the country?

Citizens of all other countries require an appropriate visa to travel to Georgia. Exceptions are citizens of China, Egypt, Guyana, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Peru who hold valid diplomatic or official/service passports issued by their country. They can enter and stay in the territory of Georgia for a specified period.

It is possible to obtain a Georgian visa at the relevant consulates or embassies both through electronic application registration and the electronic visa portal. Documents are submitted according to the visa category. A decision on issuing or denying a visa is made within 5 to 30 calendar days, depending on the visa category.

Crew members of international airlines, railways, or sea transport and passengers with intermediate transfers do not need a visa for passing through the territory of Georgia. If the passengers have a document confirming the right to enter the country of destination, they can transit through Georgian territory with the permission of the border police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Their stay in the country should not exceed 10 days.

At the boundary between Europe and Asia, Georgia has a growing reputation as the place to go for travelers who love exploring the fringes of the travel map. The oldest wine-producing nation in the world has a timeless quality that permeates its thriving cities, its bucolic mountain villages and its rugged mountain terrain.

The South Caucasus region spans Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan – nations still marked by the shadows of past conflicts and the long reach of their vast Russian neighbor to the north. But Georgia is emerging as the most popular and most accessible gateway to the Caucusus, helped by the growing buzz surrounding its energetic capital city, Tbilisi .

To help ease you into this fascinating corner of Europe, here's a guide for first-time visitors to Georgia.

Visa requirements for Georgia

Visiting Georgia is usually easy for travelers from most countries. Citizens of 98 nations – including the member states of the EU, Australia , New Zealand ,  USA , Canada , South Africa , Turkey , Russia and many nations in the Middle East, Central America and Central and Southeast Asia – can visit and stay in Georgia visa-free for 365 days. The Georgia Ministry of Foreign Affairs website has more details. Citizens of many other nations can apply for an  e-visa before departure , which requires five working days to process. The best time to visit Georgia

Despite its mountainous topography, Georgia is a year-round destination. Late spring and early autumn are ideal times to visit Georgia's cities, the central plains and the low ridges of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains in the south. Summer (July and August) can get uncomfortably hot and humid in the major cities but this is the peak holiday season on the Black Sea coast. With rising temperatures at higher elevations, summer is also the perfect time to visit the remote valleys and ridges of the Greater Caucasus Mountains in the north. 

November to April is the low season in Georgia, with temperatures dropping to below freezing, particularly at higher elevations. However, the chilly weather can start as early as October and last until mid-March. The winter months see heavy snow, particularly in the north of the country, attracting both on-piste skiers and free-riders to the slopes of ski resorts such as Gudauri , a two-hour drive north from Tbilisi.

How to get to Georgia by plane

Despite being on the fringes of Europe, Georgia is relatively accessible from most parts of the world. The international airports at Tbilisi , Kutaisi and Batumi are served by numerous carriers – including the national airline, Georgian Airways . The most frequent flights are from Turkey and the Gulf States.

The easiest place to fly into is Tbilisi International Airport , which receives regular flights from cities in Western Europe and the Middle East. The list of budget airlines serving Georgia changes regularly, but Tbilisi and Kutaisi are the main budget hubs. The seaside resort town of Batumi  is served by a handful of airlines, with regular flights to Turkey, Ukraine and the Middle East.

How to get to Georgia by land and sea

Georgia has one land border with Russia, close to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) , with road transport on to the Russian town of Vladikavkaz. Turkey and Georgia share three land borders, of which Sarpi–Hopa near Batumi is the most frequently used, with easy onward travel along the Black Sea coast to Trabzon . Frequent passenger and cargo ferries transport visitors to Georgia's main ports at Poti and Batumi from destinations around the Black Sea.

Borders to Armenia (Sadakhlo–Bagratashen) and Azerbaijan (Red Bridge–Shikhli) are within an hour's drive of Tbilisi, allowing easy onward travel deeper into the Caucasus by bus, marshrutka (minibus) or rail. Night trains run daily to Baku , while overnight sleepers to Yerevan run daily from June to September, then every second day for the rest of the year. A rail link from Tbilisi to Istanbul in Turkey is under development, but currently, the section between Kars and Batumi must be completed by bus. 

Getting around in Georgia's cities

Georgia's major cities have relatively well-organized public transport systems, though not much in the way of integrated public transport. Tbilisi is the only city with a metro; in the rest of Georgia, the primary means of transportation are buses and Russian-style marshrutky (minibuses). 

Tbilisi's metro has just two lines, making it very easy to navigate. To explore the city, buy a Metromoney card from a metro-station ticket office and use it to pay for metro trips, city buses and marshrutky . City buses run on schedules displayed on digital boards at the bus stops, but m arshrutky run more often than buses, making them a favored means of transport for locals.

Traveling around Georgia

As well as being the backbone of public transport in cities, marshrutky are the most-used form of transport when traveling around the country. Services between major hubs run approximately every hour, depending on the destination. However, minibuses are the least comfortable option, with little legroom or space for luggage. In Tbilisi, Didube Bus Station has marshrutky going west, while vehicles going east depart from Navtlughi Bus Station. 

Georgia also has a fairly well-organized train system, run by Georgian Railway . However, the network is only slowly being upgraded from Soviet times, and trains take longer to get to their destinations than marshrutky  or buses. The only moderately fast train runs on the Tbilisi–Batumi route; book well ahead on this line in summer.

Money tips for Georgia

ATMs are widely available, easy to access and safe to use in cities and small towns in Georgia. The majority of businesses accept card payments, including hotels, convenience shops, restaurants, and pharmacies. However, if you're heading into the mountains or remote villages, be sure to take cash with you. US dollars and euros are the most useful currencies to carry as backup cash.

Travel costs in Georgia

Depending on how you choose to travel, Georgia can be either expensive or very budget-friendly. There are comfortable international hotel chains for those willing to spend a little more, but Georgia also has plenty of small boutique hotels, inexpensive guesthouses and apartments for rent. Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi are particularly well stocked with accommodation. Renting a central apartment from Airbnb can cost as little as 100 GEL (US$35) a night, while a mid-range hotel room will cost from 40 GEL (US$15) upwards.

Georgia doesn't have any Michelin-star restaurants, but the national cuisine is feted as the best in the Caucasus, and there are plenty of opportunities to feast at all price ranges. For luxurious dinners, check out the best restaurants in Tbilisi or Batumi – dinner often comes with a spectacular panoramic city view. A meal in a high-end restaurant with a bottle of premium Georgian wine can set you back 100 GEL (US$35) or more, but eating at local restaurants will rarely set you back more than 20 GEL (US$7) for two courses.

The price of public transport in major cities can be as little as 1 GEL (US$0.34) for a local marshrutka ride. Tickets to travel around the country by  marshrutka and bus vary depending on the destination; the ride between Tbilisi and Batumi costs around 30 GEL (US$10). Sightseeing is moderately priced as well – museum entry fees range from 3 GEL (US$1) to 15 GEL (US$5).

What to eat in Georgia

Georgian food is the original fusion cuisine , influenced by flavors from both Europe and Asia. The Georgian kitchen makes extensive use of local beef, lamb, pork and poultry, fresh fruits and vegetables, many kinds of bread, walnuts, cheeses and various spices that show the influence of neighboring Turkey and Russia. Vegetarians will find plenty of plant-based meals as well, though vegans may struggle with the widespread use of cheese.

Khinkali , boiled meat dumplings, are one of the national dishes of Georgia and a firm favorite meal for locals and visitors. Another must-try treat is khachapuri , a pizza-like cheese pie that is similar to a Turkish pide ; every region has its own version. Another staple is mtsvadi – grilled pork or beef chunks on a skewer – which plays an obvious nod to Russian shashlik , Turkish shish kebabs and Greek souvlaki .

To lighten your lunch or dinner, order pkhali, a simple but healthy tomato and cucumber salad with a walnut and vegetable paste. Spinach, eggplant, beetroot leaves and cabbage are also common ingredients in pkhali . As a snack to munch while exploring, seek out churchkhela , nuts preserved in a chewy confection made from grape juice.

Georgian wine is famous across the region, and it's well worth sampling local vintages from the  Kakheti region when you come. Be sure to try qvevri wines, which are generally organic and unfiltered and have a very distinctive taste. For something stronger, chacha is a traditional Georgian spirit made from fermented grape skins, and it makes a nice break from the ubiquitous vodka. Last but not least, try Borjomi, a salty mineral water that was the beverage of choice for every Soviet leader from Lenin onwards.

Get to know Georgian culture

When traveling to a new country, it's always helpful to know a few words in the local language, and Georgia is no exception. The Georgian language has only around 4 million speakers, and knowing essential words such as gamarjoba (hello) and madloba (thank you) will get you a warm smile of appreciation from the locals. 

Georgians are known for their hospitality. A guest for Georgians is "a gift from God," so don't be surprised if a stranger you met an hour ago invites you home for dinner with their family. If you choose to go, go hungry; the host will insist you eat every dish on the table and drink as much wine as you possibly can. 

Georgia is still a traditional country when it comes to social mores. Very short skirts or dresses, off-the-shoulder tops, and skimpy or see-through clothes are likely to attract a stare. When entering churches, women should cover their heads and shoulders (some churches will provide scarves for this, but it's better to bring your own). Skirts and shorts (for men and women) should cover the knee. Men should also ensure shoulders are covered and ideally wear trousers rather than shorts.

Georgia e-Visa is quite easy to obtain. It’s a simple application that takes about 10 minutes to fill. You will have to upload your passport scan and a digital photo. Processing takes about 5 days and costs $20 USD.

Documents needed before starting

Before starting your Georgia e-Visa application, have these documents ready.

• Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the validity of the Georgia e-Visa
• Photo must be as per the ICAO standards
• The maximum allowed size is 472 x 600 pixels or 4 x 5.16 cm
• Photo must be at 300 DPI resolution
• Must be in PDF format

Passport validity required for Georgia e-Visa

Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the validity of the Georgia e-Visa. Georgia e-Visa is valid for 120 days from the day of intended travel. Add 3 months to that date to calculate the passport validity required.

Here is an example:

• Your intended arrival date in Georgia: 10 Jan 2022
• Your Georgia e-Visa will be valid from: 10 Jan 2022 – 10 May 2022 (120 days)
• Your passport must be valid at least until: 10 Aug 2020 (3 months)

Steps for Georgia e-Visa application

Step 1: apply for e-visa.

• Go to the Georgia e-Visa portal
• Click on the green “APPLY NOW” button

You will see a popup with current regulations for entering Georgia for vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers.

Read the information on the popup to understand the current COVID-related requirements such as vaccinations, PCR tests, etc.

Scroll down and click on the “I Agree” button. 

The popup will close revealing the “Citizenship/Country” page.

• Citizenship/Country

Enter the following on the “Citizenship/Country” page.

• Citizenship/Country [ Comment: Select your country of passport from the dropdown]
• Service/Special/Official
• Travel Document for Stateless Person
• Business/Professional
• Visiting friends and relatives
• Study and Training less than 90 days
• Health and medical care
• Religion/Pilgrimages
• Insurance [ Comment: Select this box if you already have travel health insurance]
• I am holder of valid visa and/or residence permit of respective country (if applicable) [ Comment: This field is visible only if you are from a certain nationality. If you hold a valid visa or residence permit from any of the countries listed in the dropdown, select it. If not, leave it as “Not Specified”]
• Security verification [ Comment: Enter the numbers and/or letters shown above this field to verify that you are a human and not a robot/computer]

Check the box for “I confirm that I have read….”.

Click on the green “NEXT” button.

IMPORTANT If you have selected a valid visa or residence permit for the above question “ I am holder of valid visa and/or residence permit of respective country “, you will be taken to the “You are exempt from visa” page. [ Jump to “You are exempt for visa” section ]

You will be shown a “List of Necessary Documents” popup with the list of documents you will need to upload in the subsequent steps. 

Read through the list of documents and click on the “CONTINUE” button.

You will be taken to the “Travel Information” page. 

NOTE: Travel Health Insurance Travel Health Insurance is mandatory to enter Georgia. You will be able to get the e-Visa without proof of travel health insurance. But you will be asked to show your proof of insurance at the airport or land border. If you cannot show proof of insurance at the airport or land border, you may be denied entry. 

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I have ongoing travel health insurance from SafetyWing which comes with a visa letter. I printed the letter and showed it as proof of my insurance at the border. It was accepted without any issues. 

You are exempt from visa

If you hold a valid visa or residence permit from any of the below countries, you DO NOT NEED an e-Visa. You are EXEMPT from a Georgia visa . Meaning, you can use this visa or residence permit to enter Georgia VISA-FREE. 

Your visa or residence permit must be from the following 45 countries only.

• Czech Republic
• Liechtenstein
• Netherlands
• New Zealand
• Saudi Arabia
• South Korea
• Switzerland
• United Arab Emirates
• United Kingdom
• United States

If you selected one of the above countries for the question “I am holder of valid visa and/or residence permit of respective country”, you will be informed that you are VISA EXEMPT. 

You cannot continue further as you don’t need an e-Visa. So close the browser at this step. When you travel, use your passport and the visa you have from any of the above countries to visit Georgia. 

• Travel Information

Enter the following on the “Travel Information” page.

• Select the date of intended arrival in Georgia [ Comment: Select your date of intended travel to Georgia]

IMPORTANT: Intended arrival date in Georgia Your visa validity will start from the entered intended arrival date. You can’t enter Georgia earlier than this date. If you are unsure of your travel dates and since the visa will be valid for 120 days, you can enter a much earlier date so you can travel early if necessary.

Once you enter your intended date of arrival, the page will show you the visa validity dates and fee.

You will be taken to the “Terms & Conditions” page.

Terms & Conditions

Check each of the boxes for the following terms and conditions. Checkboxes are mandatory, so you must make sure you understand and agree to each of them. 

• I am traveling for short-term purposes
• I am aware that applying for e-Visa from the territory of Georgia is the ground for refusal
• My travel document/passport validity extends at least three months after validity of Georgian Visa
• I can prove at the border that I hold a return ticket, hotel reservation and health/accident insurance valid across the whole territory of Georgia throughout the period of my stay
• I can prove at the border that I have sufficient funds to cover all the costs associated with my travel to Georgia including funds for financing accompanying me minors and persons under guardianship or custody
• I fully acknowledge that submission of any false document/information may become the ground for visa/entry refusal
• I fully acknowledge that I am responsible for determining the date from which I will have a right to enter Georgia
• The e-Visa application fee shall not be refunded
• I confirm that I meet each and every one of the conditions listed above
• I confirm that I meet conditions for crossing the Georgian Border. I understand that if I fail to provide documents required for crossing the Georgian border I will be refused to enter Georgia.

You will be taken to the “Personal Information” page.

• Personal Information

Enter the following on the “Personal Information” page.

• First Name [ Comment: Enter your given name as it appears in your passport. If you have a middle name enter your “first name + middle name” combination]
• Surname [ Comment: Enter your surname or last name as it appears in your passport]
• Date of Birth [ Comment: Enter your date of birth as it appears in your passport]
• Sex [ Comment: Enter your sex – male or female]
• Email Address [ Comment: Enter your email address where you would like to receive notifications on payment and e-Visa approval]
• Travel Document No. [ Comment: Enter your passport number]
• Expiration date of Travel Document/Passport [ Comment: Enter your passport expiration date]

Photo upload

Click on the green “Upload Photo” button to upload your digital photo. 

If the photo doesn’t meet ICAO standards , a warning popup comes up indicating the issue with the photo. Fix it and reupload. 

Representative

If applying for someone else, check the box for “Check the box if application is submitted by representative” and enter the necessary details. 

Traveling with companion

If you are traveling as a couple or family, check the box “Traveling With Companion” and enter the following information.

• Companion’s First Name [ Comment: Enter your companion’s given name as it appears in their passport. If they have a middle name in their passport, enter “first name + middle name” combination]
• Companion’s Surname [ Comment: Enter your companion’s surname or last name as it appears in their passport]

Then click on the green “Add Person” button.

Repeat the above steps for adding additional companions.

NOTE The “Traveling with Companion” section will help Georgia e-Visa authorities to locate applications of your companions and process them together. So make sure to mention the details for your family members traveling with you in this section.

When finished move on to the passport attachment.

Passport upload

Upload your passport data/ID page scan by clicking on the field or folder icon.

After entering all the information and uploading photo and passport, click on the green “NEXT” button.

You will be taken to the “Verification” page.

Verification

Review all the information you have entered so far. Go through each of the following sections to make sure the information you have entered is correct and accurate. 

• Information about representative
• Accompany Persons
• Terms & conditions (I hereby declare that:)

If everything is looking good, click on the green “VERIFY” button. 

You will be taken to the “Application Successfully Completed” page.

On this page, you will see a message that your application is successfully completed. 

Now, check your email inbox. You will receive an email to verify your email and pay the visa fee.

STEP 2: Proceed with Payment

Check your email inbox for an email with the subject “Email address verification message”.

Open the email, read through the information and click on the green “APPROVE” button. 

You will be taken to a page on the Georgia e-Visa portal with a red “PROCEED WITH PAYMENT” button. 

IMPORTANT After submitting the application, you will have 1 hour to verify your email. Failing to verify your email within 1 hour will remove your submitted application and you will have to submit a new one. So, make sure to look for the email and click on the “APPROVE” button as soon as you can. 

IMPORTANT After you verify your email (i.e. clicking the APPROVE button), you will have 5 hours to complete the payment. 

Proceed with payment

Click on the red button “PROCEED WITH PAYMENT”. 

You will be taken to the payment form to enter your credit card information.

Credit card form

Enter the following information in the credit card form.

• Merchant [ Comment: No need to enter anything here as this field is not editable. MFA of Georgia is shown by default]
• Company Address [ Comment: No need to enter anything here as this field is not editable. Tbilisi is shown by default]
• Order ID [ Comment: No need to enter anything here as this field is not editable. An order ID is shown by default]
• Amount [ Comment: No need to enter anything here as this field is not editable. $20 USD is shown by default]
• Card Number [ Comment: Enter the credit/debit card number as it appears on your card]
• Expiry Date [ Comment: Enter the expiration date of your credit/debit card]
• CVC2 [ Comment: Enter the CVC/CVV number of your credit/debit card]

Click on the blue “Next>>>” button. 

You will be taken to the “Purchase Accepted” page.

NOTE A service fee of $0.50 USD will be charged on top of the $20 USD e-Visa fee. In your card statement, you will see two transactions, one for $20 USD and another for $0.50 USD.

Payment confirmation

On this page, you will see your transaction details and payment confirmation. 

Check your email inbox for an email confirmation of your visa fee payment.

STEP 3: Receive your e-Visa

The processing time for Georgia e-Visa is 5 working days. You will usually receive your Georgia e-Visa approval within that time frame. 

When your Georgia e-Visa is approved, you will receive an email with your e-Visa in PDF format as an attachment. 

Download and print your e-Visa PDF. You would need to present this e-Visa print at the airport or land border when entering Georgia.

If you will be flying on a one-way ticket, make sure to carry proof of your onward ticket .

If you haven’t received your e-Visa approval even after 5 working days, send an email to the Georgia e-Visa authorities. Sometimes the emails would end up in the spam folder, not delivered or there could be a delay from their side. Below is the contact information.

Hi, I am Sayan Bakshi from Kolkata, India. It’s been almost more than 3 weeks that have applied for the Georgia eVisa, but there has been no update from their end. Haven’t received any update on whether it’s approved or rejected. Nothing at all. My eVisa required date was given as 10th October 2022. Is that the reason for the delay? Not able to understand. Have left a mail too but no reply too. Please let me know if you have any info that can help.

Hi Sayan! Indian nationals are not eligible to apply for Georgia e-Visa. Are you certain that you have applied for an e-Visa? What passport do you hold?

Hi, I plan to visit Georgia with all of my siblings and cousin but some of them ain’t 18 yet so I have to apply for them. So I have a small question when we apply for their visa in “traveling with a companion” so how do I identify myself as their big brother or cousin? In the section they only have 4 choices “Parent, Guardian, spouse and child”. THANK YOU.

Hi Thy! You must select “guardian” in that case because you will be their guardian during the trip. If their parents are also traveling, then their parents must apply the visas for them. If their parents are not traveling, then you can apply for them but select “guardian” as your relationship.

Hi Sasha! Yes, you can use your valid South Korean tourist visa to enter Georgia. You don’t need a separate Georgia visa. All you need is your India passport and South Korea visa.

Hello, I am entering details in form on passport page. As my passport was renewed and place of issue is Dubai. My query is that what should I enter in 3rd question – Country/ Origin. It should be India or UAE?

Hi Ammy! I’m assuming you’re referring to Citizenship/Country, then it would be “India”. Also, if you live in Dubai and have a residence permit from UAE, you do DO NOT NEED to apply e-Visa. You can just use your UAE residence permit and India passport to travel to Georgia.

What if you only hold a tourist visa from UAE, do you still need to apply for the E-visa? And can you travel from Dubai or have to return to the home country?

Hi Victoria! Yes, Georgia accepts UAE visas. Your UAE visa must be valid at the time of entering Georgia. I have always used my US visa to enter Georgia. US visa is stuck in the passport, so it was easy to have them check at the airport. I know UAE issues only e-visas and I’m not sure how difficult or easy to convince the Georgia authorities with an UAE e-Visa print. I have seen many flying from Dubai/Abu Dhabi show their Emirates ID as a proof and pass the Georgia immigration. You can also ask this question in the FB group to see if anyone used their UAE e-visa print to enter Georgia.

Hello, I am an Indian citizen. I have my US B1/B2 visa which is still valid, stuck on old passport for which the pages are exhausted. I now have a new passport – can I still travel to Georgia on this visa?

Hi Megha! Yes. You can use your valid US B1/B2 visa in your old passport to enter Georgia. Make sure to carry both old and new passports when you travel.

Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for temporary stay or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. Citizens of qualified countries may be also able to visit the U.S. without a visa under the Visa Waiver Program . If you do not qualify for the Visa Waiver Program or are traveling to study, work, or participate in an exchange program, you must apply for a nonimmigrant visa.If you do not qualify for the Visa Waiver Program or are traveling to study, work, or participate in an exchange program, you must apply for a nonimmigrant visa.

Applicants for U.S. visas are required to appear in person for a visa interview at the U.S. Embassy. You must schedule an appointment for that interview, either online using this website or through the call center .

Please make sure you identify your country of citizenship and the type of visa you are applying for correctly. Incorrect identification of this information will result cancellation of your appointment and you will not be able to schedule an appointment until the next available appointment date.

To schedule a nonimmigrant visa appointment, you must have the following information and documents available:

• A passport valid for travel to the United States with a validity date at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the United States (unless country-specific agreements provide exemptions. If more than one person is included in your passport, each person desiring a visa must submit an application.
• Your visa application (MRV) fee payment receipt
• Your DS-160 confirmation page
• Your e-mail address
• If applicable, required documents based on visa class (such as a petition approval for petition-based visas; more information about visa types and information about each can be found here ).

Applicants are limited to the number of times they can reschedule their appointments. Please plan accordingly so that you are not required to pay another visa application fee.

Protests related to the Transparency of Foreign Influence Law

Since April 15, 2024, thousands of people regularly gather near Georgia's Parliament in Tbilisi to protest against the "transparency of foreign influence" law. The scale of the protests is increasing and protests are spreading to other locations throughout Tbilisi, including near Heroes Square and on university campuses.

Protests have also been taking place in other cities, such as Batumi and Kutaisi, and additional ones are expected in the coming days.

Local authorities heightened security measures, especially around government buildings. Security forces strongly repressed demonstrators by using tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds, resulting in numerous arrests and injuries.

Transport and essential services may be disrupted.

Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time.

If you are in Georgia:

• monitor local media for the most recent information
• expect enhanced security measures and an increased police presence
• follow the instructions of local authorities
• be prepared to modify your plans in case of disturbances

Abkhazia and South Ossetia

The administrative boundary lines between Georgia, South Ossetia and Abkhazia are not well defined and change frequently. The Russian military and border guards regularly patrol the area. You could be detained and arrested if you cross into South Ossetia and Abkhazia, even by mistake.

The checkpoints with South Ossetia and Abkhazia are only open a few days a month and are subject to unexpected and prolonged closures.

Tensions are high in both occupied regions. Unexploded ordnance, explosions and landmines may pose a risk where military operations have occurred, especially in areas along the administrative boundary lines with South Ossetia and Abkhazia and near the border with Azerbaijan (Red Bridge area).

Terrorists have carried out attacks in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. They typically use car bombs to target military and security facilities.

If you choose to travel to South Ossetia or Abkhazia despite this advisory:

• be aware of your surroundings at all times
• only cross at official checkpoints
• carry valid ID with you at all times
• monitor local media to stay informed on the security situation and on checkpoint closures

Canadian officials may not be in a position to provide consular assistance to Canadians in these areas, due to security concerns and travel restrictions.

Russian border regions

Georgian authorities only recognize the Kazbegi-Verkhnii Lars border crossing with Russia. If you choose to travel to the Russian border regions despite this advisory, avoid crossing at unofficial land borders connecting to the following Russian republics:

• Kabardino-Balkaria
• Karachay-Cherkessia

Kidnappings have occurred in Abkhazia, South Ossetia and other areas bordering Russia.

If you travel to these areas despite the advisories in effect:

• don’t walk alone, especially after dark
• vary your itinerary
• keep doors and windows locked at all times
• don’t show signs of affluence
• exercise vigilance in crowded places, such as markets and public transportation facilities

There is a low threat of terrorism, but an attack can occur at any time.

Although there have been no recent attacks, there is a terrorist threat due to the return of Georgian fighters from abroad and the use of the country as a transit route between North Caucasus and the Middle East.

Targets could include: 

• government buildings 
• schools 
• places of worship 
• airports and other transportation hubs and networks 
• public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners 

Always be aware of your surroundings when in public places. 

Be particularly vigilant during: 

• sporting events 
• religious holidays  
• public celebrations  
• major political events, such as elections  

Terrorists may use such occasions to mount attacks.  

Demonstrations

Planned and unplanned political demonstrations take place regularly in Georgia, especially in Tbilisi during international events and around election periods.

There have been violent attacks against 2SLGBTQI+ persons during the Pride festivities in Tbilisi, resulting in casualties.

In 2023, large-scale demonstrations took place in Tbilisi. They led to vandalism and violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces who used tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds.

Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

• Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
• Follow the instructions of local authorities
• Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Petty crime

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, occurs, especially in crowded urban areas and at public gatherings.

• Ensure that your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents are secure at all times
• Avoid showing signs of affluence or wearing expensive jewellery
• Avoid carrying large sums of cash or unnecessary valuables
• Keep doors and windows locked at all times

Violent crimes targeting foreigners occur occasionally. Incidents include:

• carjackings
• sexual assaults

The police patrol frequently, but their response in remote areas and outside of larger cities can be significantly longer.

During your stay:

• avoid travelling alone after dark
• beware of people walking behind you
• avoid inadequately lit and deserted streets

ATM and credit card fraud occurs.

Be cautious when using debit or credit cards.

• Pay careful attention when your cards are being handled by others
• Use ATMs located in well-lit public areas or inside a bank or business
• Avoid using card readers with an irregular or unusual feature
• Cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN
• Check for any unauthorized transactions on your account statements

Romance scams and overcharging

Romance scams on dating sites or through social media have occurred. Typical scenarios involve locals luring tourists met online into bars or nightclubs. Tourists are forced to pay high bills after ordering expensive food and drinks.

Discussions about overcharging have turned violent. Tourists have been threatened and forced to pay the bill by the establishment's security guards. 

• Beware of people who show a keen interest online 
• Always meet new acquaintances in a secure and familiar location  
• Always confirm the price of an item before ordering 
• Don’t leave an open tab at bars and nightclubs
• Avoid giving your credit card to bar or restaurant staff 
• Check your bill for accuracy before paying 

Overseas fraud

Women’s safety

Women travelling alone may be subject to some forms of harassment or verbal abuse.  

Sexual assaults have been committed, including against foreign women.

If you’re the victim of a sexual assault, you should report it immediately to the nearest Canadian consulate or embassy and seek medical assistance. You should also report the incident to Georgian authorities and ensure that local police will file the report with the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia .

• avoid deserted streets at night and isolated areas
• don’t travel by yourself in a taxi, especially at night

Due to previous military operations, landmines and unexploded ordnance may pose a threat to your safety in various areas of Georgia, including:

• near the Red Bridge border crossing with Azerbaijan
• in South Ossetia, Abkhazia and along the administrative boundary lines

If you choose to travel to these areas:

• stay on main and paved roads 
• avoid walking in fields
• avoid roadside ditches, shoulders and unmarked trails  
• pay attention to signs indicating the possible presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance
• keep in mind that landmines and unexploded ordnance fields may not always be clearly marked 

Adventure tourism

Adventure tourism, such as zip-lining, rock climbing or trekking, can be dangerous, especially if they are not well-organized. Trails are not always marked and weather conditions can change rapidly.

Tour operators may not meet international standards.

If you are participating in adventure tourism:

• never do so alone, and do not part with your tour companions  
• consider hiring an experienced guide from a reputable company 
• obtain detailed information on your activity and on the environment in which you will be setting out  
• buy travel insurance that includes helicopter rescue and medical evacuation   
• ensure that your physical condition is good enough to tackle the challenges of your activity  
• avoid venturing off marked trails  
• refrain from using equipment if you have doubts on their safety  

Road safety

Road conditions.

Road conditions vary considerably across the country and fatal accidents are frequent.

Roads are generally in good condition in Tbilisi and in major cities. However, they are sometimes poorly maintained and dangerous in rural areas due to:

• unpaved and uneven surfaces
• raised and sunken manholes
• stray livestock
• lack of traffic signs
• insufficient lighting

In rural areas, traffic signs may only be written in Georgian.

Driving habits

Road accidents are one of the main causes of death in Georgia. It is common for drivers to:

• fail to maintain one lane
• drive at excessive speeds
• drive under the influence
• engage in road rage

Pedestrians often cross in the middle of the road and drivers don’t always give pedestrians the right of way. If you drive in Georgia:

• always drive defensively
• don’t engage with drivers showing signs of road rage
• plan your trip in advance, especially if you are visiting rural areas 
• avoid travelling after dark
• always carry a cell phone and charger

Right of way

The right of way system is in effect in Georgia.

Drivers must yield to vehicles coming from the right at intersections if they are not in a priority lane, and to vehicles entering roundabouts.

Public transportation

In Georgia, taxis are regulated and vehicles are recognizable by their white colour and roof-mounted taxi signs. However, unofficial taxis continue to operate and drivers generally don’t use meters. They may overcharge you for the ride.

Drivers can be reckless and drive at excessive speed.

Ride-sharing apps are popular throughout Georgia.

If you choose to take taxis during your stay:

• arrange your pickup with a reputable company before arrival when travelling by air, or use authorized cabs at the airport 
• order your taxi at the reception if you are staying at a hotel
• don’t use unmarked taxis
• never share a taxi with strangers
• negotiate the fare in advance
• have small bills available for payment

Buses and metro

Buses and metro are generally safe and reliable, but pickpockets may target tourists.

Mini-buses called "marshrutka" are poorly maintained and often lack security features like seatbelts.

• Always carry your valuables and identification with you
• Avoid storing bags in the overhead compartment or under your seat
• Don't take buses that look overloaded or in poor condition

The condition and cleanliness of trains vary greatly from route to route.

• Make sure that your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times
• Don’t leave your compartment unattended
• Keep the door locked from the inside

If you choose to travel to the occupied regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, you will need prior authorization from Georgian authorities who don’t recognize border crossings between Russia and the occupied regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. If you enter Georgia via Abkhazia or South Ossetia at an unofficial border crossing, you could face heavy fines and jail sentences.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary. 

Yellow fever is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

In this destination, rabies is commonly carried by dogs and some wildlife, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal. While travelling, take precautions , including keeping your distance from animals (including free-roaming dogs), and closely supervising children.

If you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional. In this destination, rabies treatment may be limited or may not be available, therefore you may need to return to Canada for treatment.  

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who are at high risk of exposure (e.g., occupational risk such as veterinarians and wildlife workers, children, adventure travellers and spelunkers, and others in close contact with animals). 

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

  Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

 The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.  

 The flu occurs worldwide. 

•  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
•  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
•  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round. 

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

• Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
• Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs. 

Travellers' diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travellers. It is spread from eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

Risk of developing travellers' diarrhea increases when travelling in regions with poor standards of hygiene and sanitation. Practise safe food and water precautions.

The most important treatment for travellers' diarrhea is rehydration (drinking lots of fluids). Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.  

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

• Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
• Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
• Minimize exposure to insects
• Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

•   washing your hands often
• avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
• avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness 

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.  

Tuberculosis is an infection caused by bacteria and usually affects the lungs.

For most travellers the risk of tuberculosis is low.

Travellers who may be at high risk while travelling in regions with risk of tuberculosis should discuss pre- and post-travel options with a health care professional.

High-risk travellers include those visiting or working in prisons, refugee camps, homeless shelters, or hospitals, or travellers visiting friends and relatives.

Medical services and facilities

High quality medical services and facilities are generally available in major cities, such as Tbilisi and Batumi.

In rural areas, there are shortages of medical supplies and personnel. Facilities may not meet the quality standards you may be used to in Canada.

Medical services can be expensive, and immediate up-front cash payment is often required.

Medical evacuation, which can be very expensive, may be necessary in the event of serious illness or injury.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller. The traveller is also responsible for his or her own personal safety.

Be prepared. Do not expect medical services to be the same as in Canada. Pack a   travel health kit , especially if you will be travelling away from major city centres.

You must abide by local laws.

Transfer to a Canadian prison

Canada and Georgia are signatories to the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons. This enables a Canadian imprisoned in Georgia to request a transfer to a Canadian prison to complete a sentence. The transfer requires the agreement of both Canadian and Georgian authorities.

This process can take a long time, and there is no guarantee that the transfer will be approved by either or both sides.

Reforms are underway to improve the efficiency and the transparency of the judicial system, but if you are arrested in Georgia, you could be detained for several months and there could be long delays to resolve your case.

In 2017, Georgia decriminalized cannabis and various cannabis-based products for personal use. Production, distribution and sale remain illegal. Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect jail sentences and heavy fines.

Drugs, alcohol and travel

Some prescription medication may not be available in Georgia.

If you take prescription medication, you’re responsible for determining their legality in the country.

Georgian authorities strictly regulate the possession and import of prescription medication under special control, including narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, and some over-the-counter medication that is commonly available in Canada.

• Bring a sufficient supply of your medication
• Carry a copy of your prescriptions along with an English translation
• Declare all medications in your possession to customs officials upon entry
• Always keep your medication in the original container
• Pack your medication in your carry-on luggage

If you carry illegal prescription medication according to Georgian Law, you could face deportation and jail sentences.

Imports and exports

You may need to obtain a permit from the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Georgia to import or export cultural valuables.

Cultural valuables include:

• archeological items
• coins, old inscriptions and seals
• handmade canvas, paintings and drawings
• postal stamps removed from circulation

Taking photographs of military installations or government buildings may result in a penalty.

You should seek permission from local authorities before taking photographs.

Dual citizenship is legally recognized in Georgia.

If you are a Canadian citizen, but also a citizen of Georgia, our ability to offer you consular services may be limited while you're there. You may also be subject to different entry/exit requirements .

Georgian-Canadian dual citizens may be subject to military service.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Georgia.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Georgia, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Georgian court.

If you are in this situation:

• act as quickly as you can
• contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
• consult a lawyer in Canada and in Georgia to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
• report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Georgia has a zero-tolerance policy for drinking and driving.

Penalties for drinking and driving include:

• heavy fines
• prohibition from driving for several months or years

Georgian law doesn’t criminalize sexual acts or relationships between persons of the same sex.

However, 2SLGBTQI+ travellers could be discriminated against based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or sex characteristics.

In 2023, the government of Georgia proposed a law to prohibit surrogacy arrangements to foreigners.

If you’re planning to visit Georgia for the purpose of commissioning surrogacy arrangements, you should consider the potential challenges involved in pursuing international surrogacy and seek legal advice on Georgian and Canadian laws and citizenship procedures prior to making any arrangements.

Same-sex couples may encounter issues when engaging in surrogacy arrangements in Georgia.

The Embassy of Canada to Türkiye in Ankara is unable to provide recommendations on surrogacy arrangements.

The currency of Georgia is the lari (GEL). 

U.S. dollars and euros are widely accepted and exchanged for local currency.

Credit cards may not be widely accepted in rural areas.

There are restrictions on the import and export of currency. You must declare to customs officials if you have more than 30 000 GEL or its equivalent in your possession.

This requirement applies to:

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Georgia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Embassy of Georgia in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Georgia.

You might be asked to wear masks in hospitals.

Passport validity requirements

If you’re visiting Georgia, your passport should be valid for the length of your visit.

Check with your travel provider to make sure your passport and other travel documents meet their requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

British nationals do not need a visa to visit Georgia for up to one year. To stay longer or to travel for work or study, you must apply for a longer-term visa. Contact the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for more information.

If you’re in Georgia for more than 183 days and do any paid employment, you’re automatically liable for income tax and must tell the Revenue Service of Georgia . This applies whether you are on a visitor’s permit or officially resident. You’ll be fined if you do not comply.

Travel insurance

All visitors to Georgia must have adequate travel insurance to cover all healthcare needs during their visit. You may be asked for evidence of this, either by your airline at check-in or by immigration authorities when you arrive in Georgia. You may face difficulties if you do not have this evidence.

Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation.

Travelling with medicines

Georgia has a very strict anti-drugs policy. This can also cover prescription and non-prescription medicines commonly available in the UK. For example, non-prescription medicines containing codeine are illegal.

This can cause serious problems for travellers and in some cases lead to prosecution. Foreign nationals have been detained on arrival for having medicines that would not normally cause problems in the UK.

If you plan to travel with prescription medicine, you must carry a doctor’s prescription and ideally the original packaging.

Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint

Adult passengers 18 and older must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel.

• Beginning May 7, 2025, if you plan to use your state-issued ID or license to fly within the U.S., make sure it is REAL ID compliant . If you are not sure if your ID complies with REAL ID, check with your state department of motor vehicles.

• DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
• U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents

• An acceptable photo ID issued by a  federally recognized , Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe
• HSPD-12 PIV card
• Foreign government-issued passport
• Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
• Transportation worker identification credential
• U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)

In coordination with its DHS counterparts, TSA has identified acceptable alternate identification for use in special circumstances at the checkpoint.

A weapon permit is not an acceptable form of identification. A temporary driver's license is not an acceptable form of identification.

Beginning May 7, 2025, if you plan to use your state-issued ID or license to fly within the U.S., make sure it is REAL ID compliant . If you are not sure if your ID complies with REAL ID, check with your state department of motor vehicles.

TSA currently accepts expired ID up to a year after expiration, for the above listed forms of identification. DHS has extended the REAL ID enforcement deadline to May 7, 2025. Learn more about REAL ID on  TSA’s REAL ID  webpage.

TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling within the United States. Contact the airline for questions regarding specific ID requirements for travelers under 18.

Forgot Your ID?

In the event you arrive at the airport without valid identification, because it is lost or at home, you may still be allowed to fly. The TSA officer may ask you to complete an identity verification process which includes collecting information such as your name, current address, and other personal information to confirm your identity. If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint. You will be subject to additional screening, to include a patdown and screening of carry-on property.

You will not be allowed to enter the security checkpoint if your identity cannot be confirmed, you choose to not provide proper identification or you decline to cooperate with the identity verification process.

TSA recommends that you arrive at least two hours in advance of your flight time.

Names With Suffixes

TSA accepts variations on suffixes on boarding passes and ID. Suffixes are not required on boarding passes. If there is a suffix on the boarding pass, and there is not one on the ID or vice versa, that is considered an acceptable variation.

If your identity cannot be verified, you will not be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint.

• Both parents or guardians must approve that we can issue a passport to a child, and go with the child to apply in person.
• If one or both parents or guardians cannot apply with their child, you will need to show us more documents.
• You cannot renew your child's passport using Form DS-82.
• Passports for children under age 16 are only valid for 5 years. 

Steps to Apply

1. fill out form ds-11 and print it.

Use our Form Filler tool  to fill out your child's form on a desktop or laptop computer and then print it. If you are experiencing technical issues with the Form Filler, download a PDF . 

Tips to complete your child's form :

• Do not sign your child's form until asked to do so by a passport acceptance agent or employee. 
• You can apply for a passport book , a passport card , or both documents.
• You may ask for a larger passport book with more visa pages, at no extra cost, by checking the 'large book' box at the top of the DS-11.

2. Get Evidence of U.S. Citizenship (and a photocopy)

Your evidence must be an original or replacement copy. The document must have the official seal or stamp of the office which issued it. You must submit one of the following documents for your child:

• Issued by the city, county, or state of birth
• Lists applicant's full name, date of birth, and place of birth
• Lists the parent(s)' full names
• Has the date filed with registrar's office (must be within one year of birth)
• Has the registrar's signature
• Has the seal or stamp of the city, county, or state which issued it
• Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth
• Certificate of Citizenship
• Please note you must also provide a document, such as a birth certificate, that lists the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of the child. Full validity means the document is or was valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for children under 16.

Paper only : You cannot submit digital evidence of U.S. citizenship such as a mobile or electronic birth certificate. You must submit physical evidence of U.S. citizenship and a photocopy of the document. 

Returning your child's document : We will return your child's document in a separate mailing up to 8 weeks after you receive the new passport.

Tips for making a photocopy :

• Black and white (no color)
• Use 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper
• Use a single side of the paper

If you do not submit a photocopy, you must submit a second copy of your citizenship evidence. We will keep this copy for our records.

3. Show Your Relationship to Your Child

You must submit a document that lists the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of the child. Examples include:

• U.S. birth certificate (also evidence of U.S. citizenship)
• Foreign birth certificate
• Adoption decree
• Divorce or custody decree
• A court order

Some documents, like a U.S. birth certificate, show  both  U.S. citizenship and parental relationship. These documents must be originals or certified copies (not photocopies).

You and your child may have different last names, as long as the document showing your relationship to your child lists your full name.

If your name is different than the one on the document showing your relationship to your child, submit proof of your legal name change.

4. Get a Photo ID (and a photocopy)

Both parents or guardians must bring a physical, photo ID and a photocopy of it. If your photo ID is from a different state than the state in which you are applying, bring a second photo ID. 

You must show at least  one  of these photo IDs:

• Valid or expired, undamaged U.S. passport book or passport card 
• In-state, fully valid driver's license or enhanced driver's license with photo
• Certificate of Naturalization 
• Certificate of Citizenship 
• Government employee ID (city, county, state, or federal)
• U.S. military or military dependent ID
• Current (valid) foreign passport
• Matricula Consular (Mexican Consular ID) used by a parent of a U.S. citizen child applicant
• U.S. Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) used by a parent of a U.S. citizen child applicant
• Trusted Traveler IDs (including valid Global Entry, FAST, SENTRI, and NEXUS cards)
• Enhanced Tribal Cards and Native American tribal photo IDs
• In-state, fully-valid learner's permit with photo
• In-state, fully-valid non-driver ID with photo
• Temporary driver's license with photo

5. Show More Documents (if both parents or guardians cannot apply)

• Both parents or guardians must approve that we can issue a passport to a child, and go with the child to apply in person.
• If one or both parents or guardians cannot apply in person with their child, you will need to show more documents.

Important : Submit  Form DS-3053  and other notarized statements within three months of signing them.

6. Provide a Photo

You must provide one photo with your child's application. Go to our  Passport Photo page  for photo requirements and to see examples of photos. 

• Do not attach or staple your child's photo to the form. The acceptance agent or passport employee will review the photo and staple it to your form.
• Some  passport acceptance facilities
• A company which offers photo services
• Home. Ask your friend or family member to take your child's photo. Print it on glossy or matte photo quality paper. 

7. Calculate Fees

When applying using Form DS-11, you will pay two separate fees - an application fee and an execution (acceptance) fee. You will pay the application fee to the U.S. Department of State, and the execution (acceptance) fee to the facility which takes your application. 

• Add $60 to your application fee if you want  expedited service .
• Add $19.53 to your application fee if you want us to ship your completed passport in 1-2 days after we issue it.

*How to fill out your check and pay the application fee to the U.S. Department of State. Please note you must pay a separate execution (acceptance) fee. 

Families may write one check or money order to the U.S. Department of State if they are applying at the same time. The check or money order must include the name and date of birth of each applicant.

8. Find Location to Apply

In the United States:

• Traveling in more than 3 weeks?  Go to a  passport acceptance facility  such as a post office, library, or local government office. Check with the facility to see if you need to make an appointment. 
• Traveling in less than 3 weeks?   Make an appointment  to apply at a passport agency or center.

In another country:

• Contact your  U.S. embassy or consulate .

9. Track Your Application Status

You can  subscribe to email updates  about your application status, and  learn more about each status update .

It may take 2 weeks from the day you apply until your child's application status is “In Process.”

How will you send my child's passport and supporting documents.

You will get multiple mailings. The number of mailings depends on what document(s) you asked for.

Passport Book : You may get your new passport and citizenship documents in two mailings. You may wait 8 weeks after getting your passport before you get a second mailing with your citizenship documents. We will return the passport book using a trackable delivery service.

Passport Card : You may get your new passport card and your citizenship documents in two mailings. You may wait 8 weeks after getting your passport before you get a second mailing with your citizenship documents. We only send the passport card via First Class Mail. We do not send cards using 1-2 day delivery services.

Both a Passport Book and Card : You may get three separate mailings:

• New passport book
• New passport card
• Citizenship documents

Contacting Us : If you have been waiting more than 8 weeks for your documents, call us at  1-877-487-2778  to report that you have not received your documents. 

If you want us to reimburse you for a lost supporting document, you must contact us within 90 days of the date which we mailed your passport. You will also need to provide a receipt to show the cost of replacing the document. 

Can I pay for faster delivery and return shipping?

Yes. You may choose one or both of the following shipment options:

• Delivering application to us : Pay for Priority Mail Express for faster shipping. The price for this service varies depending on the area of the country.
• Returning the passport to you : Pay $19.53 for 1-2 day delivery. This means you will receive your passport   1-2 days after we send it. Include this fee with your check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State. Do not submit a return envelope to us with postage pre-paid. 

You may receive your passport and supporting documents in separate mailings. If you are renewing a passport card, we will send it to you via First Class Mail. We do not use 1-2 day delivery services if you only applied for a passport card.

What countries require Form DS-3053 "Statement of Consent" to be notarized at an embassy or consulate?

In certain countries, a DS-3053 must be notarized at a  U.S. embassy or consulate  and cannot be notarized by a local notary public. Currently, these countries include:

US announces first tranche of visa restrictions comprising members of Georgian Dream

Matthew Miller, Spokesperson for the US Department of State, announced that the United States of America has implemented a new visa restriction policy on dozens of Georgian citizens.

The first tranche of visa restrictions comprises members of the Georgian Dream party, Members of Parliament, law enforcement and private citizens, from 2 to 3 dozens of individuals.

“The United States remains deeply concerned with the Georgian Dream party’s anti-democratic actions, as well as its recent statements and rhetoric. These actions risk derailing Georgia’s European future and run counter to the Georgian constitution and the wishes of its people.

“Secretary Blinken recently announced a comprehensive review of all bilateral cooperation between the United States and Georgia. As part of that review, the Department implemented a new visa restriction policy to address these actions under the Immigration and Nationality Act. Today, under this policy, we are taking steps to impose visa restrictions on dozens of Georgian individuals. This includes individuals responsible for or complicit in, and immediate family members of those responsible for or complicit in, undermining democracy in Georgia, such as by undermining freedoms of peaceful assembly and association, violently attacking peaceful protesters, intimidating civil society representatives and deliberately spreading disinformation at the direction of the Georgian government. This first tranche of visa restrictions comprises members of the Georgian Dream party, Members of Parliament, law enforcement and private citizens.

“It remains our hope that Georgia’s leaders will reconsider their actions and take steps to move forward with their nation’s long-stated democratic and Euro-Atlantic aspirations. But if they do not, the United States is prepared to take additional actions”, said Matthew Miller.

US imposes visa restrictions on Georgian nationals it said undermined democracy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The United States on Thursday imposed visa restrictions on a few dozen Georgian nationals it accused of undermining democracy, including members of the Georgian Dream party and members of parliament and law enforcement, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said.

A government minister in the ex-Soviet South Caucasus nation called the decision "yet another mistake" by Washington.

Georgia last month passed a "foreign agent" bill that has stirred street protests from opponents who decry it as authoritarian and Russian-inspired. The Georgian Dream party that controls parliament says the legislation is needed to ensure transparency in foreign funding of NGOs and protect the country's sovereignty.

The legislation requires organizations receiving more than 20% of their funding from overseas to register as "agents of foreign influence," and introduces fines for violations as well as onerous disclosure requirements.

Washington, which has long criticized the law, launched a review into bilateral cooperation with Georgia and announced a new visa ban policy.

The first tranche of restrictions was imposed on Thursday on up to three dozen people, including members of Georgian Dream, members of parliament, law enforcement and private citizens, Miller said. He declined to name any of those targeted.

"This includes individuals responsible for or complicit in ... undermining democracy and Georgia, such as by undermining freedoms of peaceful assembly and association, violently attacking peaceful protesters, intimidating civil society representatives and deliberately spreading disinformation at the direction of the Georgian government," he said.

The United States hopes Georgia's leaders will reconsider their actions, Miller said. If not, he warned the U.S. is prepared to take additional actions.

Russia's Tass news agency said Thea Tsulukiani, Georgian deputy prime minister and minister of culture, told the Imedi television channel: "This is yet another mistake which, to their regret and our regret, the United States is making with regard to its strategic partners.

"It's probably not the first mistake. And we have to assume that there will be others."

We’ve scoured the internet for the best digital nomad visas, focusing on the countries that have the most amenable tax laws, the lowest income requirements, and the cheapest application fees, as well as any unique perks on offer. Here’s our top 9 for 2024:

Costa Rica offers one of the most popular digital nomad visas on the planet. Costa Rica’s laws mean that as long as you’re not employed by a Costa Rican company, you won’t have to pay any income tax at all.

So, anyone with a remote job in the US or the EU will be living tax free in Costa Rica. However, it doesn’t stop there – you also be exempt from import tax if you have to ship in equipment for your work, and you’ll be able to avoid remittance taxes too.

The visa application only costs $100 to complete, and the only entry requirement really worth knowing about is the minimum income requirement of $3,000 before tax. You also have to prove that you consistently are earning this. Freelancers who cannot provide this information may need to create a limited company to satisfy this condition, as doing so will allow them to pay themselves a consistent income.

Costa Rica is considered a very safe country with generally good internet connectivity and has a slightly lower cost of living when compared with some of the Caribbean islands that offer digital nomad visas, such as Anguilla and Bermuda.

Malta is a picturesque island nation home to just over half a million people located in the Mediterranean Sea – and it offers a digital nomad visa for remote workers.

The minimum income threshold for your visa application to be considered is €2,700, while the application itself costs around €300 to complete.

Digital nomads who apply for a visa to work in Malta will be exempt from income taxes for the first 12 months of their stay. You will have to pay taxes after that period finishes, but Malta’s tax rate is set at just 10%, so you’ll be paying a lot less than you probably are right now in the US, UK, and most other parts of the EU.

While the local economy isn’t as cheap as some of the other countries on this list, you’ll generally pay a little less than you would while holidaying in a big European city, such as Madrid or Berlin, and English is widely spoken as a second language.

Anguilla is a British Overseas Territory located in the Caribbean that offers a 12-month digital nomad visa and doesn’t charge any local income taxes. You also won’t be subject to any additional taxes, as the government funds itself via customs duties and tourism.

Impressively, there are no income requirements at all for your job. All you have to provide is your passport, birth certificate, and a brief description of the work you’ll be doing while there, whether it’s for your job or university.

The only catch is you’ll have to pay a $2000 entry fee, and if you want to bring family members with you, that’ll cost you extra. The standard of living on the island is pretty high too, and so are the living costs – but it’s worth exploring considering you won’t have to pay anything in taxes.

Croatia – a small country located in southern Europe – offers a 12-month digital nomad visa that exempts all holders from income taxes while in the country. It’s a similar principle to Costa Rica – if you’re not working for a Croatian company, you won’t be asked to pay.

The income requirement is pretty low compared to Costa Rica, however, and is set at around $2,500. If you don’t earn a steady income above this threshold, you can also apply if you earn can prove you have just over $31,000 in savings.

However, there is a catch – you won’t be able to renew your visa immediately, and you’ll have to wait for a further six months after the expiry date to re-apply if you want to stay in the country. In a way, it’s a visa for true digital nomads who stay in one place for short periods, and then move on to their next adventure quickly.

Uruguay is a small country of around 3.5 million people located on the east coast of South America, just south of Brazil. It’s known for its low levels of poverty and well-run healthcare system. Montevideo, the capital, has an extremely high quality of life and is considered one of the continent’s best cities to live in.

Uruguay offers an initial 6-month digital nomad visa for remote workers who want to live in the country, with the fee set at between $10-50.

It’s easy to get your hands on too – all you have to do is book your trip to Urugy as a regular tourist, then complete an online form with some information about how you plan to support yourself while there.

Once you have your permit, you’ll have to head to the National Civil Identification Office to collect your Uruguayan documents. After the initial six months, visa applicants can apply for a 6-month extension to apply for permanent ​ One advantage of working in Uruguay compared to some other locations (especially ones in Asia) is that it’s just 2 hours ahead of New York. This makes it a strong option for a lot of US workers who need to have significant overlap with their teams during the day.

Like Anguilla, digital nomads making their homes in Bermuda don’t have to pay any taxes at all. But on top of that, you’ll get a $200 customs allowance every time you enter the country.

The visa application fee is lower than most of its Caribbean neighbors at just $263. However, it only lasts for a year, and when it runs out, you’ll have to apply again.

The entry requirements are pretty basic: you need a valid passport, a clean criminal record, and proof of employment to enrol in an educational institution.

However, much like Anguilla, Bermuda living costs are quite high – so, while you’ll get to keep much more money than you would working in the US or Europe, you’ll be spending a lot more in your spare time, too.

There are a couple of co-working spaces dotted around the island, but there are many more beachside cafes and Bermuda is known for having excellent internet connectivity.

Georgia – located east of the Black Sea, just south of Russia – is welcoming more tourists through its borders than ever before . It has become an attractive destination for digital nomads thanks to its liberal visa policies.

Citizens of 98 countries can stay in Georgia for one year without a visa, including those residing in the US and European Union. You’ll need to be earning $2,000 a month or have $24,000 in your bank account, and a valid passport and proof of employment.

For your first 183 days as a digital nomad in Georgia, you won’t have to pay any tax – and after that, you’ll pay an income tax rate of 20%. You can also apply for “Small Business Status” which means you’ll only pay a 1% tax on your revenues if you earn under ~$184,000

Georgia’s capital and biggest city, Tbilisi, has lots of co-working spaces and a vibrant nightlife scene, but there are also beachfront villages and historic towns to choose from. The cost of living is very low all across Georgia compared to places like the UK and US, so most digital nomads will be able to take their pick.

Portugal offers a 12-month long, renewable digital nomad visa that has a minimum income requirement of €3,280 to apply.

The application costs just €75-90 to complete, but you will have to provide a lot of information, including proof of work, accommodation, a clean criminal record, and various other documents. It also can’t be done solely online – you’ll have to head to your local Portuguese consulate at some point in the process.

There used to be a way you could pay almost no taxes in Portugal by applying for the non-habitual resident’s scheme, which made income earned globally tax-free – but this is no longer the case after changes to the law that came into force in 2024.

The tax rate for digital nomads is a flat 20%, which is still a lot less than the standard rates paid by Portuguese nationals, which can reach 48%.

Portugal’s living standards are average-to-cheap relative to the rest of Europe. What’s more, Portugal is widely considered to be one of the safest countries in the world, with much lower crime rates than countries like Spain, France, and the United Kingdom.

The Spanish digital nomad visa is among the most search-for digital nomad visas in the United States right now, according to search volume data seen by Tech.co.

Spain offers a 1-year digital nomad visa and a 3-year digital nomad residency permit for people who want to settle down in the country longer-term. It costs around €80 to complete the application, although you will have to visit the Spanish embassy or consulate.

Digital nomads are classed as non-residents and those earning under €600,000 are subject to a 24% income tax, which is much lower than residents, who are taxed up to 47%.

Interestingly, the Spanish tourism board says that digital nomads in Spain “can also work for a company located in Spain, as long as the percentage of this particular work doesn´t exceed 20% of the total amount of his/her professional activity.”

However, not everyone will be able to apply – you need a college or university degree and extensive proof of where you’re working and how much you’re earning.

In 2024, it’s easier to become a digital nomad than at pretty much any other point in history. Of course, the first thing you’ll need is a fully remote job role. Luckily, in 2024, big companies like Google and Microsoft both have hundreds of vacant remote positions.

Lots of positions at startups and small businesses are now fully remote too. If you can prove you’ve got the skills and you can work independently, there’s no reason why they should restrict where you’re doing your job from.

If you’ve already got a remote job, then the next phase will be picking a location and ironing out the details with your manager or CEO. Your company may have policies relating to working in different parts of the world, paying taxes while abroad, and working remotely from places that aren’t your home, such as coffee shops.

Whatever your situation, there’s often a lot of admin that goes into being a digital nomad – but if you have dreams to see the world and aren’t prepared to sacrifice your career trajectory for it, it’ll be more than worth it.
