Vistas - The Visit by Lisa Jackson , National Film Board of Canada

A ring of black text on a transparent background, reading 'Monday Short'.

"When you’re out in the bush, especially at night with no light pollution, something shiny and bright tends to stick out."

A girl stares out her bedroom window

NFB films can't be embedded, so you'll have to watch The Visit on their site .

Lisa Jackson's The Visit isn't a radically unusual UFO story. Based on a real interview with Barry and Kimowan Ahenakew, it tells the story of a 1996 sighting at the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation in Saskatchewan. The main beats are fairly familiar—an isolated location, animals on alert, a strange light in the sky that doesn't seem to move with the rest of the stars. The narration is surprisingly calm, given the encounter it's describing, and the animation by Jody Kramer has a pleasantly loose feel, drawn in thick, inky lines that look like they could be lifted directly from a well-used sketchbook.

The story takes a turn, though, when the RCMP leave and the narrator chooses a different way to approach the encounter. Rather than viewing the UFO as an inscrutable other, he chooses to pray, burn sweetgrass, and sing—and the response was immediate. There's definitely an element of Close Encounters of the Third Kind to the scene, but where that film arrived at musical communication through layers of scientific analysis, The Visit gets there through simple intuition, and a desire to take part in a connective act—a sense of connection only heightened by emerging from traditional song.

The matter-of-fact tone of the film's storytelling might be the result of an especially unflappable narrator, but it may also have a cultural component. In a 2020 interview with Nation News , Ernest Webb, the creator of the APTN series Indians and Aliens , talks about the prevalence of otherworldly encounters in certain Indigenous cultures, from the belief in certain Cree communities that their ancestors arrived from a starry cluster in the Peiades, to an Ojibwa oral history of a "Skyman" visiting their community half a millennium ago, to the simple fact that "When you’re out in the bush, especially at night with no light pollution, something shiny and bright tends to stick out."

Given those histories, the UFO encounter takes on a more spiritual character, not just a visit from an unknown stranger, but maybe a reunion. It's that context, and that blending of beliefs, that give The Visit film its unique place in the UFO-story landscape.

Jackson's film was created as part of an NFB project called Vistas , which partnered with APTN to create 13 films from 13 Indigenous creators, mostly mixing documentary and animation to tell their stories. The results range from Melanie Jackson's stop-motion hoop dance Dancers of the Grass , to Doug, Jr. Smarch's late-night drive in Ignition , to a short based on the Mi'kmaq legend ( Little Thunder ) and a glimpse into a hidden world courtesy of award-winning filmmaker and comic artist Diane Obomsawin.

dir: Lisa Jackson syn: This animated short tells the true story of a Cree family's strange encounter one winter night, which results in a conversation beyond words. Vistas is a series of 13 short films on nationhood from 13 Indigenous filmmakers from Halifax to Vancouver. It was a collaborative project between the NFB and APTN to bring Indigenous perspectives and stories to an international audience.

Susan Lisa Jackson was born in 1952 in Molalla, Oregon, United States of America. Before her books landed on the bestsellers list, Lisa was just like any other struggling writer who was trying to make both ends meet and survive. She was influenced by her sister, Nancy Bush, to write a novel. They started a joint project and their work was published. But Lisa was good in writing suspense thrillers while Nancy was more inclined on suspense spiced with romance.

The two went on their own paths, with both of them making their names in the world of writing. Her books are seen in the New York Times Bestsellers List, Publishers Weekly, and the USA Today.

How She Writes

Lisa Jackson reveals her secret in breathing life into the characters in her books and making them alive in their readers’ imagination. She has a way of weaving relationships, motives, lies, actions, clues, and personal histories to come up with a mindboggling, terrifying, breathtaking, and horrifying murders.

It seems that Lisa has become good in killing people. Her protagonists and antagonists have grown up and acquired more skills as they are followed by their fans from book to book. These readers are hooked to the way the characters evolved in the series that continue to devour those books.

Book Series

Lisa Jackson writes books in a series, set in some parts of the United States of America and in Wales. The books set in the United States are super suspense thrillers that can take readers deep into the minds of serial killers and their victims, seeing how the hunter and the prey feel just before a kill. Topics that revolve around psychic or supernatural powers have also caught the interest of readers. For in this world where revenge and deceit prevails, a sick mind can easily be fed and nurtured.

Lisa chose Wales as the setting of her medieval romance stories. The theme still put emphasis on supernatural powers believed to have been possessed by great families during the era. In these books, readers meet sorcerers and warriors who have lead reclusive lives in order to maintain and keep their extra-ordinary powers.

New Orleans Series

Lisa Jackson has written several series alone and some with her sister, Nancy Bush. In each series, she has nurtured characters that hr readers easily fall in love with. Her New Orleans Series is composed of 7 books with Detectives Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya as the major characters. Her first book in this series was a psychological thriller about a serial killer and a celebrity whose lives are bound by a dark past.

Hot Blooded sealed Lisa’s writing career as she kept the fires burning from page to page with her realistic characters. Set in New Orleans, this hard-to-put-down book has become a best seller. The second book was clearly a sequel of the first, with its title Cold Blooded. This one was again another great thriller, with Detective Rick Bentz working with Reuben Montoya to catch another serial killer, one who considers him his worst enemy.

Montana “To Die” Series

The major characters in this series are Detectives Regan Pescoli and Selena Alvarez, a pair of female detectives. Set in Montana, the “To Die” series is mad up of five books, with each novel gripping readers in suspense and fear as these two female detectives hunt down the killer. The first book of this series, Left to Die, had these detectives run after a serial killer who kidnaps women, tie them to a tree in the woods, and leave them to die.

In the second book , Detective Regan Pescoli’s path crossed with the serial killer but she is the victim, not the hunter, this time. Selena had a premonition of what happened to her partner and together with Regan’s lover, set out to find her.

Savannah Series

The Savannah series is composed of three books featuring Detective Pierce Reed and Detective Sylvie Morrisette trying to solve serial killings in Savannah. One character, Nikki, fell in love with Reed. A news reporter, she tags along wherever Reed is investigating a case until she became a target as well. The three books are packed with suspense and meanders around as the turns and twists open new doors that could lead the detective and his news reporter fiancée to the killer.

San Francisco Series, with the Cahill Family and Detective Anthony Paterno

The two books that comprise this series are all set in San Francisco. The two books revolve around members of the Cahill family, who seemed to be the target of a serial killer. It is up to Detective Anthony Paterno to find out who the killer is and to save another Cahill from losing her life. Both books have been labeled the best suspense thriller which the reader cannot put down once started.

West Coast Series

The series has two books, Deep Freeze and Fatal Burn. The first book tells of an actress who wanted to escape the problems and intrigues she faces and so, she decided to take refuge near the Columbia River. But she did not find peace because a killer is now stalking her. The second book features two minor characters from the first book that are now the central characters. When the daughter of Travis Settler was kidnapped, his search for his daughter led to murder, romance, and more.

Wicked Series

Lisa and Nancy have made together this formidable Wicked Series. This is composed of three books that revolve upon women with psychic abilities living in Siren Song. These books are full of the usual ingredients of Lisa’s and Nancy’s books – suspense, thrill, and romance.

Medieval Trilogy

The three books in this series are different from the other books. They are set in Wales and they talk about dark powers prevalent in this land during the medieval times. Lisa’s characters are formidable but all of them succumbed to the power of love.

Dark Jewels Series

This is another set of three books with titles featuring a jewel. Set in Wales, the novels are searing with death, passion, and revenge. These books have landed the bestsellers list.

Medieval Series

With Wales as the setting, these novels bring forth the mystery that wraps most castles and families in Wales. These are stories of revenge, betrayal, and powerful love.

I love all of your suspense thriller book…I have almost have everyone of them…once I pick up a book it’s so hard to put down….my favorite author ever…

Does the book The Life of Lauren Conrad talk about Shay breaking out of the mental hospital? I really wanted to read that thriller. I was so bummed when I finished Without Mercy! I’ve got to know what Shay is going to do.

Love your books!!!!!!

I love Lisa’s books! My new favorite author! I’ve just read all of her Colony books and was hoping she was planning on more. The last one was a few years back. I’m now reading the Regan/Selena books and they’re great too!

Your books are so wonderfully written. I just finished PARANOID and the writing was so great. Bust how did you get the idea for this plot? I am an aspiring writer, and I have writer’s block for about 2 years now. What can I do to be able to get back into my writing?

From what I have been able to determine, and i am not the worlds best researcher lol, is that Final Scream is a rewrite of one of her books called Intimacies. In your copy of Final Scream go to the back there is a dear reader page that offers something of an explanation. From what I can tell or understand is that Final Scream is a stand alone book. I hope this helps, Im not entirely sure how accurate I am.

When will the 5th installment of the wicked series be coming out? I love this series and can’t wait to see what happens next.

Unfortunately there has been no news of the next one in the series at this time.

Aww man I hope they announce it soon

Had a thought-provoking discussion in my uni class about The Visit and its approach at Indigenous futurism. The temporality of this story seems unremarkable under a conventional Eurocentric sci-fi lens, to the point where many would struggle to consider the short in the sci-fi genre (aside from the alien encounter.)
