The Illusionists Broadway Reviews

The Illusionists Broadway Reviews | What The Critics Think

Here are some of the popular The Illusionists Broadway reviews:

“Modern-day illusionists are basically performing the same tricks that have been a staple of the entertainment form for decades, only with new technological bells and whistles. What distinguishes the performers, aside from their skill, is the entertainment level they bring to their routines. On that front, The Illusionists — Magic of the Holidays more than delivers, even if its cheesiness factor is more redolent of Las Vegas than Broadway.” - The Hollywood Reporter on the 2018 Broadway production “Each performer has a specialty of sorts, and all are very good at what they do. The overall approach will be familiar to anyone who watches programs of the Got Talent ilk – fast moving, flashy visuals, loud music. Only thing missing is Howie Mandel – at least in person: Clips from the show occasionally pop up on large video screens. Perhaps the production’s greatest trick is that it never feels like a rip-off or a TV show padded out for Broadway prices. Even Shin Lim’s close-up card tricks play well." - Deadline on the 2018 Broadway production “The Vegas-style entertainment show “The Illusionists” has returned to Broadway in time for the holidays. Unfortunately this latest iteration, the group’s fourth appearance on Broadway, offers many tricks, but little magic. A flashy extravaganza on a world tour, the show is a revue on steroids that rotates headlining magic talent." - Broadway News on the 2018 Broadway production

The Illusionists Broadway Reviews | Why You Must Watch The Show

Add some holiday spectacle to your Broadway experience this Christmas by attending a show of The Illusionists - Magic of the Holidays. Back in New York after incessant public demand, The Illusionists are ready to charm audiences all over again. Prepare your senses for extraordinary stunts performed by seven outrageously talented master Illusionists, each at the top of their game.

The cast of this holiday spectacular includes Dom Chambers (The Showman), Eric Chien (The Manipulator), Chris Cox (The Mentalist), Paul Dabek (The Trickster), Kevin James (The Inventor) and Enzo Weyne (The Unforgettable). The spectacular show is chock full of blink-and-you'll-miss-it sleight of hand, complex stage setups, and plenty of humor to keep the event joyous and without a doubt, an unprecedented amount of on-stage wizardry. Described by The Times in the UK as 'theatre's Cirque du Soleil", The Illusionists showcase magic on stage at a level never seen before!

Abracadabra, Expelliarmus, and hey presto, The Illusionists line-up this year has been revealed!

The world’s biggest-selling magic show is returning to the West End this summer for a strictly limited season. The mind-blowing spectacular showcases the jaw-dropping talents of seven of the most incredible illusionists on earth.

The full line-up is:

The Showman James More

The Showman James More

James is currently one of the world’s leading and most viral illusionists. You may recognise him from Britain’s Got Talent, when he appeared on the show in 2013. He went onto have the most watched audition from that particular series with over 80 million views on YouTube.

James has gone onto have huge success following his TV appearance, including sell-out tours in Russia, becoming the first British magician in history to appear on Broadway and performing in The Illusionists tour for two years across five continents. He’s performed at many iconic venues including London’s 02 Arena, The Hollywood Pantages in Los Angeles and the Sydney Opera House.

The Unforgettable Enzo

The Unforgettable Enzo

An illusionist since the age of 11, Enzo has been honing his craft for many years. He even spent his time as an engineering student drawing up plans and learning to understand mechanics and electro-technics for his act.

His appearance on France’s Got Talent propelled him into the spotlight and within a few years, he was performing at some of the most prestigious events and festivals in Europe. In 2013, he returned to France’s Got Talent, where he wowed the audience once again by making a helicopter appear on stage, an act that had never been seen before on television. In 2015 at just 26 years old, he premiered his own show, Beyond Illusions at the famous Casino de Paris.

The Manipulator Yu Ho-Jin

The Manipulator Yu Ho-Jin

Another illusionist who started his career at a young age, Yu Ho-Jin has been an illusionist since the age of nine.

Just a decade later, he turned the magic community upside-down and won the first prize in Stage Magic and Grand Prix at FISM World Championship of Magic 2012.

He is considered to be the most elegant and artistic manipulator alive by the world’s leading magicians, and is often referred to as “the future of magic”.

The Futurist Adam Trent

The Futurist Adam Trent

Adam inaugurated the first two record-breaking Broadway runs on the US tour of The Illusionists.

He’s appeared on several high-profile TV shows, including frequent appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Today Show, an NBC primetime TV special and his own 10-episode TV series.

The Mentalist Chris Cox

Chris Cox

A multi-award winning ‘mind reader who can’t read minds’, Chris is the star of the TV shows Chris Cox’s Mind Boggling Magic (CBBC) and Killer Magic (BBC Three).

You may have already seen Chris’s work without even knowing it, as he’s the Magic and Illusions Assistant for Harry Potter And The Cursed Child .

Also no stranger to The Illusionists tour, Chris has previously appeared in The Illusionists shows in Broadway, South Africa, Mexico, Australia, London and Dubai. He’s also performed five critically-acclaimed one-man solo Edinburgh Fringe Festival shows throughout the UK and New Zealand.

Chris has also appeared with One Direction at the BBC Music Awards (BBC), on America’s Got Talent (NBC), Heston Blumenthal’s Recipe For Romance (Channel 4), Now You See It (BBC One), How TV Changed Magic and The Mentalist Revealed (Channel 5), The Secret Of Star Wars (BBC) and The Project (Channel 9 Australia).

As a creator of magic for stage shows and other events, he has also worked on Barnum (Menier Chocolate Factory), Dan & Phil’s 2016 and 2018 World Tours, Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck Restaurant.

The Trickster Paul Dabek

The Trickster Paul Dabek

Paul is well-known as one of the UK’s top entertainers, and has performed across six continents and headlined his own show in Las Vegas.

An accomplished magician, comedian and actor, Paul’s skills have won him critical acclaim. “A superb showman” (Time Out) the Magic Circle and the International Brotherhood of Magicians named him Young Magician of the Year and awarded him the British Shield.

Fast-paced, dynamic magic with quick-witted humour, Paul’s theatrical flair reaches the very back of the theatre.

The Daredevil Jonathan Goodwin

The Daredevil Jonathan Goodwin

Jonathan is widely considered one of the most creative, skilled and frankly crazy stunt performers in the world.

In his act, Jonathan has been hanged, buried alive, hung by his toes from helicopters, burned at the stake, attacked by sharks and even sewn up inside a dead cow.

Jonathan has starred in numerous TV series including One Way Out for Discovery Channel and Dangerman: The Incredible Mr Goodwin for the BBC as well as Deathwish Live, How Not To Become Sharkbait and The Seven Stupidest Things to Escape From.

Collectively these performers have been seen by millions across the world, shattered box office records and dazzled audiences of all ages around the world with a powerful mix of the most outrageous and astonishing acts ever to be seen on stage. This production will showcase their collective talents on stage together for the very first time.

Our twitter feed, tour testimonials, “i’ve seen the illusionists several times now and each day since, no matter where i am or what i’m doing, some part of the film will resonate with me.  whether it is a quote (“we’re losing bodies like we are losing languages”), a statistic (the amount of time we are currently exposed to media and will be exposed to media in the future), or just the simple understanding of the impact that mass media has on every single one of us, no matter how secure we are, i no longer look at advertisements the same.  i have a better personal understanding of beauty versus glamour from this film and a better understanding of myself too.  to have witnessed the impact that this film had on everyone who saw it was incredibly moving for me.  i truly believe that i am a better social work practitioner as a result of the messages in the illusionists.”.

Rachael Abrams, Parent Outreach Specialist for Jewish Community Services

“The film was very powerful for me to experience personally as well as to hear the conversations at Towson afterwards. Body image, health, consumer culture and societal and gendered expectations of beauty are all topics that are part of our daily lives. For young college students as well as older adults dealing with aging, I think the film touched a nerve or two with everyone in the audience. I think the impact was to get us thinking about our part in this conversation and what we can be doing for ourselves and our physical and mental well-being.”

Mahnoor Ahmed, Associate Director, Student Diversity and Development at Towson University

“The film took seven years to complete – seven years – and it shows. Elena produced an inspiring and touching film and introduced topics that I had never before thought about. I’ve seen the film five-times and would see it 500 more.”

The Illusionists Magic Of The Holidays 2023 Tour

The two most memorable bits come from Chris Cox, aka “the Mentalist”, whose mass mind-reading acts are as funny as they are jaw-dropping.

Time Out Sydney

Chris Cox is a hyperactive Harry Potter who knows what you’re thinking.

New York Times

Chris Cox’s routine ended with a deafening roar and a standing ovation. Having the biggest “wow” moment of the show led to Cox becoming a crowd favorite

Iowa State Daily

Chris Cox is stunning and has other magicians scratching their heads

Chris Cox was delighted to star on Broadway in The Illusionists – Magic of the Holidays  at the Neil Simon Theatre during the 2019 Holiday Season. This made Chris the only mind-reader in history to have played Broadway, London’s West End and Sydney Opera House.

Having headlined the 2022 US tour he is now starring in The Illusionists – Magic of the Holidays  as as part of its 2023 US & Canada Tour bringing holiday magic to the States with his unique blend of hilarious mind reading. Chris has wowed arena audiences as part of The Illusionists during two US Tours, in Cancun (Mexico) and Cape Town and Johannesburg (South Africa) and has been blowing minds as part of the 2018/2019 Australian Tour including getting 20 standing ovations in 20 shows at the iconic Sydney Opera House. In 2019 he also starred in ‘The Illusionists Experience’ a unique intimate version of The Illusionists at the Eldorado Resort, Reno, Nevada and was seen by 100,000 people in The Illusionists – Direct From Broadway at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London’s West End.

PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE

What The Press Say

A hyperactive Harry Potter who knows what you’re thinking The New York Times

The two most memorable bits come from Chris Cox, aka “the Mentalist”, whose mass mind-reading acts are as funny as they are jaw-dropping  Time Out Sydney

Chris Cox – The Mentalist’s routine ended with a deafening roar and a standing ovation. Having the biggest “wow” moment of the show led to Cox becoming a crowd favorite. “Chris Cox was my favorite. He is so quirky, entertaining and fun,” audience member, Francesca Geis, said after the show.  Iowa State Daily

Chris Cox (The Mentalist) with his mind-reading act works so fast that it was almost impossible to imagine how he could work his prestidigitation so quickly. At one point he had a young boy on stage and put him behind a curtain, gave him general instructions of what to do, and magically duplicated all that he did without being able to see him. It was impressive to behold. Broadway World

This show was all about the amazing Chris Cox, who reaches into the minds of the audience and reveals things that are truly mind blowing. He’s a cross between Pee Wee Herman and a computer geek with incredible mind-reading stunts that will astounded, amazed and thoroughly have you wanting more. This wacky mentalist is disarming with his charm and wit, revealing things you never thought he could know. Times Square  Chronicles

Chris Cox’s mind-manipulation act, which deserves special mention: it’s utterly manic and a highlight, though it often feels as though it belongs in its own show” TheatreBuzz.Au

The award-winning The Mentalist (Chris Cox) is also a dynamic and charming high-energy performer as he reads the minds of audience members, astonishingly revealing obscure, specific details of their everyday lives and histories.  The Blurb

He’s a thin, bespectacled gent, and other than a Tintin-esque tuft of hair and a penchant for tartan trousers, he doesn’t seem to have any of the gimmicks (elaborate costumes, flames, dancing girls) that his colleagues include in their acts. But Cox is a whirlwind of energy and, most importantly, lightning-quick improvised humour that makes him a hoot to watch even before he does any of what he’s a whiz at – apparently reading people’s minds. Cox appears in both halves of the show, with his first set a one-on-one encounter with a volunteer where, impressively enough, he is able to deduce details about his bewildered guest that should be impossible for him to know. His achievements after the interval are considerably more gobsmacking though, when he first reveals facets of random audience members based on touching brief questionnaires they’ve filled in, sealed in thick envelopes and placed in a container onstage. The brow-furrowing goes a step further when someone Cox is addressing touches someone next to them, and he instantly names that person and states facts about them that he cannot possible have been informed about in any conventional sense. It’s an astounding skill, effortlessly implemented. – Bruce Denhill

The Mentalist held the real ace on the night. Bearing a physical resemblance to Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory, he left the audience gasping in astonishment as he struck up a connection with members of the audience and then proceeded to probe through their thoughts. One of which involved tights and a unicorn. That’s all I will say
 – IOL

Then we met quirky Chris Cox, a mind reader who blends magic, psychology and humour to produce an act that is both eccentric and yes, mind blowing. Tall and skinny, with scuffed tackies and a Tintin quiff, he’s able to warm up an audience very quickly. Until he starts telling people when their birthdays are, and what sport they play, and who their favourite band is. Then it all starts to feel a little hair-raisingly chilly. But he’s a class act, no doubt – I spoke to the three people who he had singled out in the audience, and they all swore they were not part of the show, had never met Chris Cox, and that everything he said about them was true. Spooky! – Weekend Special

Chris Cox took my mental image / concept / prior experience of mind readers and flipped all categories! Literally bounding around stage with exuberance (kind of like Tigger from Winnie the Pooh – but with braces, glasses and a neat outfit), Chris charmed the audience quickly with his endearing nature. Whereas ‘typical’ mind readers can come across as a bit scary / creepy with often serious routines, Chris ensured that his routines were the opposite – lighthearted, charming and not at all scary. The level of details he went to when ‘picking the brains’ of his audience members were incredible – much of the audience members were in disbelief. We are talking about ridiculous levels of detail here.  Tay Around Town
