Top Website Tour Examples To Learn From In 2023
10 min read
If you’re creating a user onboarding flow for your SaaS company, you’ll want to look at website tour examples from other businesses before you start.
We can learn from their mistakes, as well as follow the best practices they’ve established for teaching customers how to use their product. Having helped thousands of SaaS teams with onboarding, we can assure you that other web apps have faced the same challenges that you have.
Let’s get right into it.
- SaaS businesses use website tours as a way of showing new users how their products work.
- Website tours are valuable because they make users activate faster and more consistently, leading to a higher rate of retention in the long-term.
- A typical website tour is built out of modals , tooltips , hotspots and driven actions.
- To maximize the odds of your website tour being a success, ensure that you segment your user s and keep your tour as interactive and personalized as possible.
- Don’t code your product tour from scratch . Use Userpilot instead. Get a free demo today!
What is a website tour?
In many cases, website tours are interactive, requiring the user to actively engage with your product. That’s because learning by doing is a more effective means of user education than merely passively reading tooltips.
When users visit your app for the first time, it’s unwise to simply leave them to their own devices and let them figure out your product in their own way.
Ultimately, the risk of churn for SaaS companies is just too high to do something like this. We’re talking about an industry where Day One churn rates often exceed 70% or 80%!
Many businesses solve this problem by giving users a product tour that highlights their web app’s key features.
What constitutes “key features” is subjective, depending entirely on what a particular user group finds valuable.
So a CEO will likely have a very different set of product needs than an intern at the bottom of the hierarchy, for example.
I’ve seen plenty of businesses attempt new user onboarding with passive tours as well, but I don’t advise it.
Types of UI patterns used in product tours
Most product tours are built out of the following elements:
- Tooltips : brief text snippets that walk users through one individual product feature
- Modals : larger, rectangular elements that grab users’ attention with striking graphics
- Hotspots: small circles that flash softly to illuminate one particular part of the UI
- Driven actions: focus the user’s attention on a specific action such as a click or an input
Userpilot will let you build all of these UI patterns from simple templates, without facing the hassle of having to code. Get a free demo today!
Other patterns include:
- Lightboxes: similar to modals , but smaller and less disruptive to the user’s sense of flow
- Banners: long, thin, rectangular elements displaying an important message, often at the top or bottom of the screen.
- Sliders: similar to banners, but they slide in from the sides of the screen
So you now know what a website tour consists of, but why should your business care about creating one, when there are so many other things you could be spending your time on?
Why use product tours in your user onboarding process?
Put simply, serving your new users with a high-quality product tour is positively correlated with all the most important SaaS metrics .
For example:
Website tours reduce Time to Value
It’s in the commercial interests of all SaaS businesses to ensure that their customers experience value from their products as soon as possible.
Partly, this is due to the high-dopamine, low attention span world that we live in.
But it’s also about fulfilling the promises you make to your users. If they’ve come to your app to experience a particular benefit, they’re likely to churn if they don’t receive what they were looking for.
So imagine if you signed up for a new product and were greeted with an empty state like this:
Not exactly very motivating, is it?
By contrast, social media scheduling tool Kontentino greets new customers to their app in a friendly, engaging way:
And they follow this welcome screen with two tooltips that guide users towards connecting their social media account and scheduling their first post:
Out of these two examples, I can assure you that Kontentino’s customers will be the ones more likely to stick around and experience value .
Customers that experience a website tour are more likely to activate
Arguably the most important milestone in any new user onboarding journey, activation is the moment when a customer personally experiences the value of your product for the first time.
A typical product tour is designed to highlight the features that are most important to each particular user segment.
Generally, this is achieved by giving the user a checklist of tasks to work through, like this:
By the time the customer has worked through the checklist, activation is almost certain.
That’s because you can use onboarding software like Userpilot to define a custom event that equates to activation on your app, and then guide users towards it with modals , tooltips and hotspots.
If you want to create custom events for your app that will help your customers to activate, get a Userpilot demo today!
User onboarding product tours drive more user retention
Imagine you’re a new user who’s using a web app for the first time and you’re overwhelmed at the amount of value you receive.
You had signed up to find a way to organize your team’s work projects more effectively, and the product tour you experience shows you multiple ways of doing just that.
You experience the core value of the product through engaging with different features.
Do you leave and check out competing products?
Of course not!
Since it’s given you exactly what you wanted and the website tour made it so easy to use, there’s a good chance you’ll stay with this app for a long time.
From the perspective of the SaaS business who made this app, this translates into a high retention rate and multiple recurring subscription payments.
Now that I’ve got your attention…
Top tips for effective website tours
Every product tour is different, but there are some best practices that can be applied to just about any SaaS business, regardless of niche.
Don’t code your product walkthroughs from scratch
If this is your first SaaS product, it might be tempting to think that you can easily create a bootstrap tour on your own.
Think again.
The simplest UI element used in almost every product tour is a tooltip . Here’s how much code you need to make one:
Now imagine that multiplied by the number of UI elements in your entire product tour.
But that’s not all!
Your developers will also need to edit your tooltips every time your product marketers want to run a product experiment , perhaps to change the tooltip’s color or shape to see if that affects performance.
Maybe you have investors with deep pockets, but given how expensive developers are and how little time they normally have, that sounds like a risky strategy to me.
A better strategy is to use code-free user onboarding software like Userpilot. That way, your product marketers can build product tours to their hearts’ content, without having to bother your devs.
But don’t take my word for it. Get a Userpilot demo today to see how it works!
Ensure your website tour is interactive
Do you remember that boring old professor at college that used to lecture you back in the day?
I’m prepared to bet that he lectured students 30 years ago in exactly the same way. Right?
The worst thing you can do is to create a product tour like that . I’m talking about a website tour that
- goes through the same product features
- in the same order
- to every single customer, regardless of use case
- in a dry, non-interactive way
This is called a linear product tour. And users consistently hate them !
This is why Pendo’s tooltip-based product tours don’t work, by the way. They’re just too linear and repetitive.
A better approach is to create an interactive walkthrough, like Kommunicate did here:
To the user, this feels more like a two-way dialogue than a boring lecture.
The product tour asks them to try out one of the core features , the user does so at their own pace, and then they get served with another interactive task that’s directly linked to their particular use case.
All the while, the website tour has tooltips and modals guiding users towards the features that they need.
Don’t forget to segment your users and personalize your website tours
As we mentioned earlier, what your customers find valuable about your product tour is subjective.
It will depend entirely on their particular use case. For example, if your product is an SEO tool:
- Senior management will look at the bigger picture of their business
- SEO managers will be interested in higher-level analytics to see how their team is performing
- Link builders will generally only care about specific metrics such as domain authority and domain reputation
So it would be foolish to serve the same website tour to each of these user segments.
The solution?
Segment your users, and deliver an individualised product tour to each segment .
A great place to segment is on the welcome screen . You can ask your users questions that assess how they want to use your product, and then use software like Userpilot to personalize the subsequent product tour based on their answers.
This is how Postfity segmented their users:
If you want to see how Userpilot can help you segment your customers, get a Userpilot demo today.
Website tour examples that follow best practices
Now that you know what a website tour is and what the signs of a good tour are, let’s look at some guided tour examples from other businesses.
Website tour example #1: Rocketbots
Rocketbots have a web app that allows you to connect all your messaging systems on one platform.
After the user logs in, they initially see this welcome screen :
Observe how Rocketbots is addressing me by name and how it’s already looking to personalize my user experience at this stage of the process.
This form is also extremely minimalistic, which shows that Rocketbots want to keep their website tour brief and get their users to activate as quickly as possible.
Once you’re done with the welcome page, the software serves you with an onboarding checklist , which looks like this:
It’s notable that the checklist includes the tasks “Connect a Channel” and “Create a Space.”
These are the two most important activation tasks that Rocketbots requires of its users.
Their software won’t work if you don’t have a “space” to put all your inboxes in, and you won’t experience any value until you’ve connected your first inbox (or “channel”) to your space.
Rocketbots used Userpilot to create a series of tooltips that walk users through these two activation tasks.
Here’s what the tooltips look like for adding your first channel:
Once this is complete, activation won’t be far away.
Website tour example #2: Tallyfy
Tallyfy is a project management tool. It has two main functionalities: documenting business processes, and then automating them.
Tallyfy’s tour consists of the following two tasks, both of which require action from the user:
The first task is simple enough. Simply follow the instructions and click “Open.”
Giving users a fast win like this is often a good idea when building your onboarding process . That way, your users will be more motivated than if you had a long, linear product tour .
The second task is rather more playful. If you click “Open,” you’re asked to choose between sand, bacon or cheese.
Adding a light touch of gamification is a great way that Tallyfy keeps its users engaged.
Once you’re done with these two trial tasks, Tallyfy finishes up by prompting you to create your own task.
There’s just the one CTA here, so it’s very clear where to go next after this website tour.
It seems to me like Tallyfy have listened to their user feedback and discovered that their product tour needn’t be any more complicated than this in order to get users to activate.
Website tour example #3: Demio
Demio is a webinar hosting service.
Their website tour is perhaps the very definition of interactivity . You are asked to join a fake webinar, and then handed over the reins to control it.
The webinar initially looks like this:
When the host passes control to you, you’re given dummy data and a slideshow to ensure that you have something to talk about.
If you’re anxious that this is some kind of a test, fear not! There is a fake audience who will chat in the sidebar and appreciate whatever you say!
There’s an element of playfulness to this website tour which makes it memorable.
And since it’s a fake webinar, there’s no risk to you if things go wrong. So it will be good practice for when you come to deliver a real webinar to real users.
If you take one thing away from this article, let it be that you consider using Userpilot to build your website tour!
It really is so much faster and cheaper than coding everything yourself, and Userpilot has templates for all the UI elements you’ll need.

Site Visit or Plant Tour: How to Maximize Its Effectiveness
- December 3, 2018
- Supplier Assessment , Supplier Sourcing
We’ve talked about why and how you should do a site visit before. Even though you know a site visit is of great importance in assuring you the quality and the consistency of your future products, you may still find it hard to put it to effective use. This is all the more true if you or your team have limited experience in conducting site visits or plant tours.
For some, especially those who are looking for overseas suppliers, site visits are both time and money consuming. Especially when you don’t have a local team to help you with that.
So what can you do to ensure an effective site visit? How can you maximize the effectiveness of the plant tours?
We’ve broken the whole site visit into the following 3 parts, so you’ll have a better idea of what to do in each phase of the site visit so as to make it effective as you hope.
Before the visit
Before going straight forward to the supplier, there are things that you can do to save time for the both parties. Such preparations are of utmost important in that they set the tone for the rest of the tasks that follow.
Prioritize your goals for the site visit
First, you need to know for sure why you want to do the site visit, what accomplishments you want to achieve, who do you think you should talk to if you want to get the problem solved.
Without knowing where to focus the time and effort, it’s almost unlikely that you will see a promising outcome for the site visit.
The last thing you want to do is to make the site visit just a day tour to the factory, only to discover that the site visit is but a tiring and non-effective waste of time.
Gather the right resources
Once you’ve set the goals for your site visit, it shouldn’t be hard for you to gather the right resources to actually going to the site.
For example, you should include a quality engineer in your site visit team if one of your priorities is product quality. And you should definitely include a sourcing professional if you want to make sure the product price is not off the chart.
It is, of course, very natural for you to include as many people who have site visiting experience as you can. Because the more site visits one has done, the easier for them to maximize the effectiveness of the tours. However, with the clear goals and structure set, it’s easy for even the young, in-experienced engineers to get the most out of site visits.
Do a joint preparation
When you have the goals and team set, the next thing you do is to start preparing for the visit. And we suggest doing a joint preparation, i.e. a joint meeting between you and the potential supplier.
In this way, you won’t have to explain to your supplier what exactly are you looking for at the site and waste the precious visiting time. And your supplier can prepare the required information such as data, numbers, figures when you ask for it at the site.
In addition, you can settle down on the detail schedule for the visit and propose changes to items that are of little importance to your visit goals.
During the visit
We’ve covered in the post Select the Ideal Supplier With a Site Visit about what questions you should as during a site visit.
Here is just a screen shot for your reference. Feel free to give it a read if you’re interested in knowing more.
After the visit
When the visit ends, it’s crucial that you summarize the visit into a form of report and then send feedback to your potential supplier.
On the one hand, the site visit report is a good way to tell how well you and your team have achieved the goals you set before the visit. In addition, the report provides an objective insight of whether the visited supplier is a good fit for your product.
On the other hand, your potential supplier could use the feedback to improve their expertise and capabilities. Even though the supplier won’t be your choice at the end, it’s still good for your business to maintain a nice, friendly relationship with more potential suppliers.
If site visits are almost impossible…
There are many cases where site visits are almost impossible to be done. For example, when your potential suppliers are located somewhere across the world; when you don’t have the right resources to assess the potential suppliers at site; when the suppliers refuse any chance of site visiting from you…
If you’re still bothered by the above problems, feel free to reach out to us, and we’d be more than happy to fix the problem for you.
We have a team of engineers with decades of experience in field; we’re located in Asia so it’s easier for us to get around; we have great relationships with hundreds of suppliers in almost any industries… In a nutshell, we’ve got you covered.
Feel free to let us know what’s bothering you, and we’ll see what we can do to help.

Exploring History: A Nevada Test Site Tour and Atomic Museum Experience
by Info AtomicMuseum | Oct 21, 2023 | Attractions , Nevada | 0 comments
When it comes to understanding the complex and fascinating history of nuclear testing in the United States, there are two places that stand out: the Nevada Test Site and the Atomic Museum. A visit to both of these sites promises an immersive experience that delves into the legacy of nuclear testing, its environmental impact, and the evolution of national security. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through a Nevada Test Site tour and the Atomic Museum experience, highlighting their interconnectedness and the insights they offer.
The Nevada Test Site: A Historical Landmark
What is the Nevada Test Site?
The Nevada Test Site, now known as the Nevada National Security Site, holds a pivotal place in American history. Established in 1951, it became the primary testing location for American nuclear devices until 1992. Over the years, it witnessed a staggering 928 nuclear tests, shaping the nation’s nuclear strategy and security.
The Nevada Test Site Tour
While the site was once shrouded in secrecy, today, it offers public tours that provide a unique glimpse into its history. These tours take you through a landscape that has seen over a thousand nuclear detonations, offering a surreal and thought-provoking experience.
Key Highlights of the Nevada Test Site Tour:
- Historical Test Locations: Visit the actual sites where nuclear tests took place, including the iconic Frenchman Flat.
- Impact on Las Vegas: Learn about the seismic effects and mushroom clouds visible from Las Vegas during the 1950s.
- Environmental Impact: Understand the environmental consequences of above-ground nuclear testing and the resulting health concerns.
- Current National Security Role: Discover how the site continues to play a vital role in national security and testing subcritical nuclear experiments.
The Atomic Museum: Preserving the Legacy
What is the Atomic Museum?
Located in Las Vegas, the Atomic Museum, commonly referred to as the Atomic Museum, is an institution dedicated to preserving the history of nuclear testing. It serves as a comprehensive educational resource, shedding light on the Nevada Test Site’s significance.
The Atomic Museum Experience
Visiting the Atomic Museum is like stepping into a time capsule of the atomic age. The museum boasts a rich collection of artifacts, exhibits, and interactive displays that cover various aspects of nuclear testing.
Key Highlights of the Atomic Museum Experience:
- Historical Artifacts: Explore a vast collection of artifacts, including nuclear devices, radiation detectors, and personal items of scientists involved in testing.
- Interactive Exhibits: Engage with hands-on exhibits that explain the science behind nuclear testing and its impact on society.
- Environmental Awareness: Learn about the environmental consequences of nuclear testing and the efforts made to address them.
- The Human Side: Gain insights into the personal stories of those who lived and worked in the shadow of the Nevada Test Site.
Connecting the Dots
What makes the Nevada Test Site tour and the Atomic Museum experience truly remarkable is their interconnectedness. A visit to the Nevada Test Site sets the historical context, allowing you to appreciate the significance of the artifacts and exhibits at the Atomic Museum. Conversely, the Atomic Museum deepens your understanding of the broader impact of nuclear testing.
If you’re planning a visit to either of these destinations, we recommend considering both. The Nevada Test Site tour provides the backdrop, and the Atomic Museum adds depth, creating a comprehensive journey through the history of nuclear testing in the United States. To gain access to the Nevada National Security Site, visitors must officially register as participants in one of their tours. It’s crucial to understand that the site remains actively used for experiments, making unauthorized entry strictly prohibited.
Your journey will commence from our very own National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas, promising a full day of captivating exploration. You’ll travel in comfort on a charter bus, complete with restroom facilities, and enjoy a well-deserved lunch break during your adventure. It’s worth noting that tour reservations are not managed by the National Atomic Testing Museum, so attempting to book through us will not yield results.
These tours are in high demand and tend to fill up rapidly, often for the entire year. To ensure you don’t miss out, it’s imperative to act swiftly. Typically, tour dates for the following year are released each June, so be sure to mark your calendars and secure your coveted spot.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a science buff, or simply curious about the past, a Nevada Test Site tour and a visit to the Atomic Museum will leave you with a profound appreciation for the complex and often sobering history of nuclear testing.
Explore the past, learn from it, and ensure that the lessons of history guide us toward a safer and more responsible future.

Hotel site inspection: 10 tips to ensure a successful hotel site tour.
In most cases, a group that wants to book a meeting, a wedding or a reunion will select the hotel based on photos and reviews online. This, however, can be disastrous since either can be misleading when compared to the actual condition of the hotel.
In addition, without a site tour, you don’t get to see all the intangibles that can’t be viewed online. For example, how pleasant is the front desk? How well staffed is the place? How clean are the public bathrooms?
No matter what kind of group travel you’re planning, a hotel site tour is an essential aspect that should not be left out.
Here are 10 tips for when you’re on a hotel site inspection
Go Unannounced Schedule a site tour with the hotel you are considering but don’t let them know that you’ll be staying the night before if you want to see the hotel exactly how your attendees will see it when they arrive. Get to the hotel early and check in to see the how attentive the front desk really is. Things to look for are room cleanliness, staff attire, public areas, and service. To learn more about what to look for, read “What is the one thing that most people don’t do on a hotel site inspection”.
Where is the GM Did the GM accompany you on the site tour? While most site inspections are conducted by sales managers, there are some GM’s that get very involved in sales and are happy to accompany you on a site tour. And if they aren’t at the site inspection, they will stop in to say hello and to answer any questions.
After all, you may be bringing a significant portion of business to the hotel, and his involvement from the very beginning is critical in ensuring a successful event. If the GM of the hotel you are considering seems very involved, it would seem to reason that he/she is taking ownership of the property and will take care of your group during the actual event.
Eagerness Try to determine how eager the hotel is for your business. When you are there on the day of the site inspection, go straight to the front desk to ask where the sales office is (even if you know where it is). Doing so will give you an idea of whether the front desk was made aware that you were coming for a site tour. If the answer to your question is “Oh, are you here for the site tour?”, then you know the hotel is eager to have your business and even the line level employees are aware that you’re coming.
Eagerness can be seen in other employees as well. Does the salesperson seem excited that you are there? Does the GM come and greet you to see if everything on the site inspection went ok?
Ask to see a room type not on the list Every hotel has what is called “Show rooms”. These rooms are not sold to the general public (unless they are sold out), and are kept in pristine condition just for site tours. On your inspection, you are bound to see just the show rooms. To see actual rooms that are sold to guests, ask to see a room type that you weren’t shown. For example, you can say “Can I see a handicap accessible room please?” Now you’re going to get to see a real room that your attendees will see at arrival.
Uniformity Are the employees in uniform? If so, are they clean and well kept? It seems like a silly question but it says a lot about how much the hotel cares about its appearance. A hotel that does not enforce a uniform or has shabby looking ones is either not run very well, or is doing poorly from a financial perspective. Neither of those reasons bode well for your group.
Longevity During regular conversation, consider asking every manager how long they have been there. If most of the answers are in the less than 2 years camp, the implication is that the employer is not good enough to hold onto their people. The importance here is that the event you are planning is anywhere from a few months to a year or so away. High turnover in management means more uncertainty for your group in terms of service and experience.
Look Up Ceiling tiles can tell you a lot about how caring a hotel staff really is. A few dirty or stained ceiling tiles in the hallways is normal. But if you see one after another in every hallway, then that is a pattern of neglect by the maintenance department. The obvious question is “If they don’t care enough to change something as simple as ceiling tiles, how much will they care about my business?”.
Trash In the parking lot Before you enter the hotel for the site inspection, consider walking the parking lot all the way around. Is it clean with a few pieces of trash lying around? Or can you see trash in the bushes or all around the curbs? If the parking lot is dirty, it is another signal data point that you can use when deciding on a hotel for your group.
Make them uncomfortable Nobody wants to talk about the negative stuff, and yet it is important to clarify everything. Before going on the hotel site inspection, you should have already seen the reviews online. Consider taking some of the bad reviews on sites like Tripadvisor and asking hotel management about it.
Bring up the negative reviews to see if the management takes ownership of the problems or just skirts the issue by making excuses for every one of them. A hotel staff that accepts responsibility by saying something like “Hey, we are not perfect, and in this case, we messed up. However, we learned from it and are better off now” is the kind of people you want to be doing business with.
Cleanliness of public areas During your site inspection, pay particular attention to the cleanliness of the hallways, the lobby, and the elevator. Is there a houseman cleaning the main public areas during your site tour? Is the staff picking up trash as they walk by it or do they choose to ignore it?
A well run hotel will not have any trash lying around in public areas since they make it every employee’s responsibility to pick it up.
Ask lots of questions This seems kind of obvious but it needs to be said. There is no way to predict what you may encounter during your site inspection so make sure you ask any question that pops up in during the site tour. It is important that you remove any doubts about the hotel before you leave as it will help you make a more informed decision. So remember not to be shy about asking any questions, regardless of how dumb they may sound.
The tips above will help ensure that you are prepared with what to look for in your next site tour. However, there are additional details that you should not look over depending on the type of group event you are planning. After all, a site tour for a wedding room block will be very different than one for a corporate meeting.
What should you do next?

In coming summer vacation, I will have my first tour of U.S. Click to expand...
envie de voyager
You can say "my first tour to the U.S.", but it is much more common to say "my first tour of the U.S." We always say that we take a trip to somewhere, and we usually say we take a tour of somewhere.
The idiom is "take a tour of." In oher words, it would be the more acceptable way of saying that you are going on a tour. In fact, I am going to take a tour to Canada incorrectly indicates that you are merely travelling to Canada.
Thank you, Harry Batt, your interpretation make it clearer for me.

Some of the confusion might begin at the travel agent's desk, where you can "book a tour to Spain." The "tour" won't cover all of Spain, of course... just those cities listed for that particular tour. So you might have a choice of five tours to Spain.

Hello! How about this: "Ok, I see that you're not able to provide the tour of Paris since there are not enough people taking part but how about offering me a tour TO Marseille instead?" Is it possible/acceptable to use "to" here instead of the preposition "of"? Thank you. G.

National Site Tour Month
Why Host a Site Tour?
August is officially ASLA's National Site Tour Month. Hosting a site tour can make an enormous impact in educating local, state, and federal policy makers on how landscape architects use design to create well-planned communities and master plans, parks, transportation corridors, and manage stormwater runoff.
ASLA advocates are essential stakeholders in promoting ASLA’s advocacy priorities, including licensure, and are well-qualified to provide elected officials with an overview of the profession’s contributions in your community.
To learn how to host a site tour for public officials, view our 2022 webinar and download our "Guide to Hosting Tours with Elected Officials" (right).
And don't forget to share your site tour experiences on social media using #SiteTourMonth and #ASLAadvocates.

Politics | key bridge collapse updates: removal of shipping containers from dali begins; sparrows point fundraiser, subscriber only, politics | president joe biden visits key bridge collapse site, takes aerial tour with gov. wes moore.
President Joe Biden on Friday took an aerial tour of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge, met with families of the six men killed and was briefed on the massive cleanup and rebuilding efforts before doubling down on his promise to have the federal government pay for it all.
“From the air I saw a bridge that’s been ripped apart. Here on the ground, I see a community that’s been pulled together,” Biden said on the banks of the Patapsco River as the sun broke through the overcast sky to illuminate the crash site in the distance behind him.
Wearing a jacket and baseball cap in the whipping wind, Biden committed to moving “heaven and earth to rebuild this bridge as rapidly as humanly possible.” He reiterated his pledge for the federal government to pay for the entire response — a process that began last week with quick access to federal emergency relief funds and the drafting of legislation to cover the rest.
The Democratic president’s visit came a little over a week after a 984-foot shipping vessel hit the Key Bridge, sending it tumbling into the river and killing six construction workers who were filling potholes in the middle of the night. Biden said Friday he was grieving for the families of those men.
“It’s not the same but I know a little bit about what it’s like to lose a piece of your soul,” said Biden, whose wife and daughter were killed when he was a young senator, and whose son died of cancer in 2015. “You get that phone call in the middle of night saying family members are gone. I’ve been there. It’s feeling like having a black hole in your chest. Like you’re being sucked in unable to breathe. The anger, pain, the depth of loss is so profound.”
Before his remarks outside, Biden toured the site from Marine One with Gov. Wes Moore , who traveled on the president’s helicopter from the White House. The pair then received a briefing at the Maryland Transportation Authority Police Headquarters, where they heard directly about efforts to clear the channel and restore both shipping traffic in the Port of Baltimore and road transportation.
Biden listened quietly and asked a handful of questions before greeting first responders during the roughly 15-minute information session. Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers leaders walked Biden through what’s been happening in the water, including work to clear an initial channel for some vessels by the end of April. Four large television screens depicted maps and images of the bridge site. Biden in one moment pointed to an image of the tangled underwater situation asking whether it was steel, though his other questions could not be heard by a small group of reporters in the room. Told of the unified state, local and federal efforts, the president at one point turned to Moore, directly to his left, and gave him an assuring tap on the shoulder. He went on to greet, one by one, law enforcement officers who stopped traffic on the bridge just moments before it collapsed.
Moore thanked Biden for his support, saying his first call from the White House was around 3 a.m. after the bridge fell around 1:30 a.m.
“President Biden might not be a Marylander by birth. But I tell you, he has proven what it means to be Maryland tough and Baltimore strong,” Moore said, referencing the mantra he’s used since the bridge collapse.
The Army Corps of Engineers said Thursday that it was pushing an “ ambitious timeline ” to return port access to “normal capacity” by the end of May. A channel 280 feet wide and 35 deep that would allow barge container service and some vessels to pass through could also be open by the end of April.
Meanwhile, the remains of three of the six men who were killed when the bridge came down remain in the water, and the 21 crew members onboard the Singapore-flagged Dali are still on board .
“We’ll never forget the contribution these men made to this city. We’re going to work hard to recover each of them,” Biden said of the victims, adding his “vow is to not rest” until the bridge is rebuilt.
A $60 million “down payment” from the federal government was approved within days , allowing for vital cleanup work as cranes began arriving and removing the debris. Most of the additional emergency relief funds, in an account flush with nearly $1 billion, can be approved by Biden. Some will need congressional approval, though, and Democratic U.S. Rep. Kweisi Mfume, of Baltimore, said he’d introduce legislation next week to cover that and other federal funding issues. With the far-right Freedom Caucus saying Friday it would force the Key Bridge funds to be contingent on other compromises, Mfume said the threat was intended to be obstructionist and that Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has told him he “understands the weight and the depth” of the problem.
Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young, in a letter to Congress on Friday, asked for them to ensure that the federal government pays for 100% of the costs. She said the administration would pursue “any compensation for damages or insurance proceeds” to reduce the burden on taxpayers.
“Your nation has your back and I mean it,” Biden said.
The financial impact will be immense. Total costs for a new bridge could run high into the hundreds of millions, and insurance claims expected to reach $1 billion or more could make the collapse the maritime industry’s largest-ever financial loss .
Other officials who joined the president in his Baltimore briefing Friday were U.S. Sens. Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, Mfume, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, Baltimore County Executive John Olszewski Jr. and Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman. All are Democrats and have taken steps within local or federal government to advance the relief efforts for the victims families, businesses that relied on the bridge and port, and plan for rebuilding.
Biden spoke of his own personal connections to the bridge and to Baltimore, where his father was born and his great great grandfather worked as a waterman. Of the roughly 30,000 vehicles that traveled across it every day, he was one of them, commuting from Delaware to Washington, D.C., when he was a senator.
“Folks, we now face a question no American should ever have to ask: ‘How will I get to work? How will I get to school? How will I get to the hospital?’” Biden said. “The response of everyone, including Congress, should be asking only one question, and they’re going to be asked a question by your delegation, ‘How can we help?’”

Biden announces plans to address Baltimore port closure and help workers after deadly bridge collapse
After visiting the site of the deadly Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse on Friday, President Joe Biden said that his administration is taking swift action to try to ease the disruption at Baltimore's port and help workers and small businesses affected by the port closure.
After an aerial tour of the site, Biden said that the federal government will provide more than $8 million in grant funds to make infrastructure improvements to the port at Baltimore's Sparrows Point — an area unaffected by the bridge collapse — so it can take on more ships.
The president also announced that his administration would provide grants to workers affected by the pause in port operations and said the Small Business Administration would offer low-interest loans for small businesses impacted by the incident last week.
"I’m here to say your nation has your back," Biden said. "The damage is devastating and our hearts are still breaking," he continued, noting that six workers who were fixing potholes on the bridge lost their lives.
"I’ve come here to grieve with you," he said, flanked by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and other Maryland and Baltimore officials. "It’s not the same, but I know a little bit about what it’s like to lose a piece of your soul."
Biden reiterated that he wants Congress to pass funding to cover the entire cost of constructing a new bridge. He also said that, so far, two small channels have been cleared for ships helping to clear the wreckage and noted the tentative timeline for reopening the port announced Thursday by the Army Corps of Engineers.
The Army Corps of Engineers expects “to open a limited access channel for barge container service and some vessels that move automobiles and farm equipment by the end of April” and “restore the port to normal capacity by the end of May,” the White House said.
In addition to the aerial tour, Biden received an operational update on response efforts from the Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers and was expected to meet personally with the families of the six workers who died.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early on the morning of March 26 when a cargo ship crashed into a support pillar. The remains of two people who were killed have been recovered, four others are presumed dead and two people who fell into the water survived.
Biden addressed the disaster during remarks in the hours following the collapse, saying that the White House would send “all the federal resources they need” and that they would rebuild the port. He also said that he intended for the federal government to pay the entire cost of reconstructing the bridge.
Director of the Office of Management and Budget Shalanda Young sent a letter to congressional leaders on Friday asking them to authorize "a 100 percent Federal cost share for rebuilding the bridge."
“To the people of Baltimore, I want to say: We’re with you. We’re going to stay with you as long as takes. And like [Moore] said, you’re Maryland tough, you’re Baltimore strong, and we’re going to get through this together,” Biden said during his remarks last week. “And I promise: We’re not leaving.”
The National Economic Council has also convened the administration's Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force to coordinate federal efforts to support affected industries in the aftermath of the collapse, the White House announced last week.
“We are much better equipped to mitigate supply chain disruptions than we were just a few years ago, thanks to increased coordination across the supply chain and new efforts to strengthen both our physical and digital infrastructure,” Buttigieg said in a statement.
Also last week, the Department of Transportation announced $60 million in emergency relief funds to go toward rebuilding the bridge. The White House said it would serve as a "down payment" for initial costs.
In 2023, the Baltimore port near the bridge, a key shipping hub and source of jobs, “handled a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo, worth $80 billion,” Moore announced in February. The port also generated more than 15,000 direct jobs, “with nearly 140,000 jobs linked to port activities,” he said in the statement.

Charley Hoffman reflects on eve of 500th PGA TOUR start
Change Text Size
Charley Hoffman didn’t realize he was approaching a major milestone until this year’s WM Phoenix Open. Once he found out, he knew exactly where to make it.
Hoffman will make his 500th career PGA TOUR start this week, an accomplishment that only 6% of PGA TOUR golfers who have made at least 20 starts share. He will do it at the event that has arguably been Hoffman’s most fruitful: The Valero Texas Open.
The site of Hoffman’s most recent win on TOUR, TPC San Antonio has often felt like a second home to the venerable veteran. Hoffman will make his 18th appearance at the event this week. He’s made the cut 16 times, with 13 top 25s and seven top 10s. Alongside his win in 2016, he finished runner-up three times. So when it came time to decide which tournament would be his 500th, it was an easy selection.
“It's so near and dear to my heart and a place where the family I knew during spring break could come and celebrate that sort of stuff with me,” Hoffman said Wednesday. “It's something we hand-picked.
“It’s quite mind-blowing,” he continued. “It's something that I probably never thought I'd get to and it's quite an accomplishment. I want more, I don't see myself going anywhere as long as I'm healthy. I obviously want to hopefully get to 600.”
Charley Hoffman reflects as he prepares to make 500th TOUR start at Valero
Hoffman’s first start came 30 years ago at the 1994 Farmers Insurance Open as a long-haired 16-year-old high schooler. It would be another four years before he turned pro and six more years after that before he earned his PGA TOUR card for the first time in 2005. His maiden PGA TOUR win came at The American Express 2007, withstanding 40 mph winds on Sunday to beat John Rollins in a playoff. Hoffman has kept his card ever since.
“The Charley Hoffman with the long hair and trying to become a PGA TOUR player and star, I think I was just dumb enough to think I could do it,” he said. “I thought I could compete with the best in the world. I played my first event when I was 16 in San Diego and I thought I could play with the guys.”
It’s a mindset that has stayed with him and propelled him through the last several years as he battled injury and poor form.
Charley Hoffman tees off 500th PGA TOUR start at Valero
“Then now, and I'll use at the WM Phoenix Open (he finished runner-up this year), I think I'm just dumb enough to think I can compete against these 20-something-year-olds and I still think I can beat them," Hoffman said. "So I think there's a little bit of stupidity inside there which is consistent through all this."
Hoffman, playing the 2024 season on a Career Money Exemption, is currently No. 56 in the FedExCup on the strength of that result at TPC Scottsdale, where he lost to Nick Taylor in a playoff. He is the second of three players expected to surpass 500 career TOUR starts this season. Ryan Palmer did so at The Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches. Two-time Valero Texas Open winner Zach Johnson is making his 497 th career start this week.
Hoffman will tee off at 8:42 a.m. ET from the 10th tee Thursday with Maverick McNealy and Nicolai Højgaard.
