Jo Dee Messina Plots 2023 Heads Carolina, Tails California Tour Dates

Jo Dee Messina has announced a massive tour for 2023, and she's borrowing the title of one of her most iconic country hits to name the trek. Messina's Heads Carolina, Tails California Tour is set to visit more than 45 cities over most of the rest of the year.

The Heads Carolina, Tails California Tour is set to launch Feb. 17 in Greensboro, N.C., and run through Nov. 11, when it wraps in Indio, Calif. The new run of shows marks the first time the country hitmaker has ever toured using the title of her career-launching hit, which reached No. 2 in 1996.

“It seems crazy that we've never toured under the 'Heads Carolina, Tails California' banner before," Messina says in a press release. "We are so excited to bring people songs that they know, stories we will share and, yes, new music!"

In keeping with the throwback theme of the new dates, Messina is also using retro artwork from the original photoshoot to brand the tour:

Tickets for Jo Dee Messina's Heads Carolina, Tails California Tour are on sale via her official website .

Cole Swindell 's 2022 No. 1 hit "She Had Me at Heads Carolina" referenced Messina's hit and helped reignite interest in the classic track. Messina is also set to release a hits collection titled Heads Carolina, Tails California: The Best of Jo Dee Messina via Curb Records in March. In addition to "Heads Carolina, Tails California," that project will feature 10 more of her biggest hits, including "Bye, Bye," "I'm Alright," "Lesson in Leavin'” and more. That project is set for release on March 10 and is currently available for pre-order .

Country great Jo Dee Messina commenced her Heads Carolina, Tails California Tour in Greensboro, North Carolina on February 17 to a sold-out crowd and has continued to play for packed audiences on the first two weekends of the tour. This is the first time Messina has ever named a tour after the the1996 debut smash that launched her into stardom and helped her take country audiences by storm with empowering, genre-defining hits like “I’m Alright,” “Stand Beside Me,” “Bring on the Rain” and more.

“I’ve been at The Intersection for 20 years and 5,000 plus shows. Our show with Jo Dee tonight is easily Top 10. Not only is she a sweetheart to deal with on all accounts – her show doesn’t miss a beat. Easily one of the best crowd responses I’ve seen in this building in years. They sang every word! I can’t wait to have her back,” said Scott Hammontree, Partner / Talent Buyer of The Intersection in Grand Rapids.

“Jo Dee Messina sounds as good today as she did back when she had 9 No. 1 hits in the 90’s.  Played to a sold out 2000 seat house here at The Alabama Theatre in Myrtle Beach, S.C.  We wish her and the band the best on the rest of the Heads Carolina, Tails California Tour!” said David Hart, Alabama Theatre.

“The sold-out Jo Dee Messina performance in Greensboro, N.C. at the Carolina Theatre was electric. Jo Dee had the fans on their feet all night with her energy that filled the room.” said Amanda Hansen, Pepper Entertainment.

Last week, Messina called into the Bobby Bones Show to talk about the tour, the success of the song and teasing new music on the way. They also touched on Heads Carolina, Tails California: The Best of Jo Dee Messina coming March 10 – her first-ever vinyl release which can be pre-ordered here: https://jodeemessina.lnk.to/BestOf

“If you’re listening to the show, she’s going to be near you because I looked and she has 1,312 tour dates in the next two months,” Bones jokes.

Jo Dee Messina (born August 25, 1970) is a platinum-selling Country music singer-songwriter and musician, best known for her 9 No. 1 songs, chart-topping albums, and a wide collection of other Top 10 hits.

Raised on country music, Messina began her career by performing live with her brother and sister in their hometown of Holliston, Massachusetts. At the age of nineteen, Messina moved to Nashville, Tennessee and entered local talent competitions in hopes of increasing her exposure and pursuing a record deal. Following regular appearances on the radio show “Live at Libby’s” and a successful demo tape, the singer caught the attention of Curb records, which signed Messina to its roster.

With the assistance of producers Byron Gallimore and a young Tim McGraw, Messina released her self-titled, debut album in March 1996. Spawning the Top 10 Country hits “Heads Carolina, Tails California” and “You’re Not in Kansas Anymore,” the record peaked at No. 22 on the Top Country Albums, catapulting the singer to national notoriety.

In 1998, Messina issued her sophomore album “I’m Alright,” which, in effect, turned her into a Country music star. Peaking at No. 5 on the Top Country Albums Chart, the record produced three Country No. 1 singles, “I’m Alright,” “Bye, Bye,” and “Stand Beside Me." This trifecta of chart-topping hits led to Messina being honored by the Country Music Association with the coveted “Horizon Award” (now known as "New Artist of the Year").

In an attempt to cross over to pop music fans, the singer-songwriter’s third full-length album, “Burn,” was a Country music record with a pop inflection. Spawning the Country No. 1’s “That’s the Way” and “Bring on the Rain,” the album was supported by tours alongside Vince Gill, George Strait, and The Judds.

The Christmas album “A Joyful Noise” appeared in late 2002, followed by the compilation “Greatest Hits” in 2003. In 2005, Messina released her sixth album, “Delicious Surprise,” once again topping the Country Music Albums chart. Earning positive reviews, the record hosted the singles “My Give a Damn’s Busted,” “Delicious Surprise (I Believe It),” and “Not Going Down.” Five years later, Messina released the last of her Curb Records projects, a trilogy of “Unmistakable” EPs: “Unmistakable: Love,” “Unmistakable: Drive,” and “Unmistakable: Inspiration."

In 2013, Messina launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to create and release her next studio album “Me.” The 2014 release was her most personal to date, allowing her to share the music she chose without limitations. The independent release also gave her the opportunity to consider the fans' favorites and honor them with tracks of their choosing. Subsequently, Messina continued to pave her own path and began to write and record songs in the Christian Contemporary space and released three independent singles, "Noel," the original "Bigger Than This," and "Reckless Love."

As of this date, Messina continues to tour nationally and internationally, performing her hits, unreleased self-penned songs, and Christian/worship music that has touched her heart. Messina's tour schedule is fluid and is constantly being updated, as she travels year-round to bring her show to fans around the globe.

Live reviews

I've always been a huge fan of Jo Dee Messina...I remember hearing her songs "Bye-Bye" and "That's the Way" being constantly played on the radio during the '90s and I got such an inspirational release from listening to them. I think the reason I fell so madly in love with her is her dedication to her music; she is so raw and real and vulnerable in her songs to the point where everyone who listens can relate to them at least for a little bit. When I heard she was going to be playing in Decatur, I just had to get tickets. That in itself was really exciting...buying tickets to see Jo Dee for the very first time! When we pulled in, I got this nervous feeling in my gut, the kind you get when you are going to give a speech or when you forget about something, and I just remember thinking: "I can't wait to actually see her perform live!!!" As me and my other friends were standing around waiting for her to walk out, we contemplated the set list that she was going to use and then without notice, out walks Jo Dee Messina! I screamed for joy at the top of my lungs. I was so excited, probably the most I've been in a while. The music started playing and the voice that came out of such a small person just blew me away. Jo Dee not only gave a 10/10 performance, she continually delivered the love to her fans that she started with. I am so proud to say that I've followed her from my childhood and am so impressed with the talent that this woman has. She is a TRUE platinum recording artist for all reasons: her voice, her lyrics and songs, her stage presence, and her ability to continually provide her fans, friends, family, etc. with wonderful music that will last a lifetime. I LOVE YOU, JO DEE MESSINA! Keep doing what you're doing and your soul will never be forgotten.

Country Music Association honouree Jo Dee Messina has been working the circuit tirelessly since she appeared way back in 1996 with her eponymous debut album. Since then she has well and truly found her place on the country circuit and now commands a stage and a fanbase with a cool charm.

She is incredibly patriotic and talks fondly of her home state during the show which receives huge cheers from the audience. Joined onstage by an extensive selection of musicians, they offer a new rich quality to Jo's music. The country stylings sound brilliant through perfect acoustics and Messina knows how to enthuse the crowds by including all the hits tonight such as 'Heads Carolina, Tails California' and 'I'm Alright'. She hits her stride by mid-set and confidently struts from side to side of stage in order to greet the cheering fans below. She dedicates a cover of 'Lesson In Leaving' by Dottie West to the venue this evening and this of course receives more cheers. She closes on a double high of 'My Give a Damn's Busted' and her number one track 'He's Messed Up'.

Lets come back to California. My daughter an three other friends enjoyed her at Winn River. We thought she came there annually and have a group of friends who were all planning to see her. She is a fabulous singer and I love that she was so down to earth and actually came to the bar following her performance and talked to us! Please come back to california. Marin county or Santa Rosa in Sonoma County would even be better!

She was AWESOME. A very good concert. JoDee Messina is personable and engaging and has great pipes. What a strong voice. She put on a terrific show in BHC AZ. The first song was bad - bad sound, bad lights, but immediately it started getting better and continued to get better and better. Clear sharp sound and everyone had a good time. Top tier performance!

Jo Dee Messina Announces Heads Carolina, Tails California Tour

jo dee messina tour greensboro nc

Jo Dee Messina is heading out on tour! The Massachusetts native just announced her Heads Carolina, Tails California Tour, kicking off on February 17 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Messina will perform in more than 45 cities, wrapping up the massive trek on November 11 in Indio, California.

“ Heads Carolina, Tails California ” was Messina’s debut single, and also became her first No. 1 hit, using retro artwork from the original photo shoot for the tour. Messina vows to perform some of her biggest songs on the road, as well as a few new ones as well.

“It seems crazy that we’ve never toured under the ‘Heads Carolina, Tails California’ banner before,” Messina shares. “We are so excited to bring people songs that they know, stories we will share and, yes, new music!”

“Heads Carolina, Tails California” earned an entirely new generation of fans, thanks to Cole Swindell ‘s multi-week, No. 1 hit with “She Had Me At Heads Carolina.” inspired by her hit single.

It was Swindell’s idea to honor her iconic song with a song of his own, from his latest Stereotype album, which Messina never expected.

“I was kind of taken aback that they chose ‘Heads Carolina’ as the song,” Messina told  Billboard . “Out of any song they could have chosen from that time, the fact that they chose [it] was an honor. I heard about “She Had Me at Heads Carolina” from the original writers of “Heads Carolina, Tails California.” They let me know the song was written and sent me a copy of it.”

Messina just announced the release of her new album, Heads Carolina, Tails California: The Best of Jo Dee Messina , which will be out on March 10. The record features 11 of Messina’s biggest hits, including “Heads Carolina, Tails California,” “Bye Bye,” “Bring On the Rain” and more. The new project will also be Messina’s first release available on vinyl.

“It’s amazing to look back over a catalog and have so many songs with so many memories attached,” Messina says. “Now, to have them come out on vinyl? Wow! It’s a new way to hold those memories. It’s very exciting!”

Jo Dee Messina announced today that she is hitting the road for the Heads Carolina, Tails California Tour. The nationwide, 45-plus date tour fittingly begins February 17 in North Carolina and South Carolina, and will extend through November in California. The tour is an ode to Messina’s debut 1996 platinum smash, “Heads Carolina, Tails California.” This is the first time Messina has toured under the now-iconic moniker and she is furthering the nostalgic theme by using retro artwork from her original photo shoot for tour ads and limited-edition merchandise. “It seems crazy that we’ve never toured under the ‘Heads Carolina, Tails California’ banner before. We are so excited to bring people songs that they know, stories we will share and, yes, new music!” said Jo Dee Messina .

Messina had a monumental 2022 touring season, as she sold out multiple venues and broke festival attendance records with her high-energy performances. She wrapped up the year with two direct support slots with Country Music Hall of Famer, Reba McEntire .

Messina also recently announced that Heads Carolina, Tails California: The Best of Jo Dee Messina will be released in March on Curb Records. The album features 11 of her timeless hits, including “Bye, Bye,” “I’m Alright,” “Lesson In Leavin,'” “Heads Carolina, Tails California” and more. It marks Messina’s first-ever vinyl release on a limited-edition, 180 gram clear vinyl with wisps of color throughout. The project will be available on March 10 and can be pre-ordered here: https://jodeemessina.lnk.to/BestOf

Jo Dee Messina has a whirlwind year ahead as her “Heads Carolina Tails California Tour” gets underway. The nationwide trek is set to kick off this weekend and spans to November, with dozens of stops from the Carolinas to California

“Here we go! Kicking it off this weekend! Hope to see you in 2023! Wahoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Messina gushed as she posted her tour dates on her social media channels on Thursday (February 16), stirring anticipation for the soon-to-begin tour.

Messina’s 2023 journey is appropriately named after her smash-hit ‘90s anthem, “ Heads Carolina, Tails California ,” which has remained a fan-favorite for decades. It recently surged with popularity again with Cole Swindell ’s nod to the hit song in “She Had Me At Heads Carolina,” which got a remixed version with Messina following its massive success. Messina is also known for “Bye Bye,” “Lesson in Leavin’,” “I’m Alright” and other irresistible anthems throughout her decades-long career in country music.
