Last week, The Bodhi Spa co-founders and sisters Cedar Hwang and Harmony Oschefski opened the doors of a new location at 186 Broadway in Providence. In the midst of a pandemic, the path to launching the hydrotherapy spa – known for its unique Water Journey – in historic Federal Hill was long, hard-fought, and put them close to bankruptcy.

What’s Up Newp had a chance to chat with the sisters about their new venture and the challenges they faced to stay open in Newport and launch in Providence this year. Read on for the full interview.

When did your Providence location officially open and what are your current hours?

We did a ribbon cutting on Wednesday, October 21st. Mayor Elorza was there as well as a representative from Senator Jack Reed’s office. We’ve fallen in love with the local community. We’re very grateful to have had really great partners and to have received such a warm welcome from the community.

We’ve started with decreased hours we will eventually ramp up to match our Newport hours (8 am – 9 pm) as we get more bookings and are able to hire more.

Tell us about how the pandemic impacted your business and the opening of your new location.

We were visiting a ski resort to talk about expanding Bodhi Spa to one of their locations, and it was on the car on the drive back that we made the call to shut down. That was on March 16 th . We didn’t officially reopen until July 5th.  We estimate we lost about $600,000 in revenue during that time.

We wouldn’t have been able to get our doors open if not for Jack Reed advocating for us. Getting our Newport location re-opened was no small miracle. We petitioned for months. We reached out to every government official that was willing to hear us. No one knew what to do with us because we were so unique. We petitioned the Department of Business Regulations, CommerceRI, Congressman Cicilline, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, and Senator Jack Reed. Through the National Hot Springs Business & Trade Association, we had a contact at the Alaska Governor’s office. We had them contact Governor Raimondo’s office to open up communication between us there.  Everyone was great at getting back to us, but no one really knew what to do with us because we’re such a unique business.

After we re-opened in Newport, no new pool applications were being looked at by the Department of Health because they were so overwhelmed managing COVID. So, we had to take a breather for a bit and just enjoy being open in Newport again.  Then, we had to hit the ground running in August and start petitioning again. We were not getting approved for the pool plan – which our whole business is based around. We only got our licenses as of 12pm on Friday (October 22nd) and we opened up on Saturday, the very next day.  The only reason we got them was because we had the power of Senator Jack Reed’s petitioning for us, making phone calls, and the governor’s office coming to check us out. It was a very arduous journey to get here and we came very close to going bankrupt. Our loans were coming to fruition and our banks were not extending any more time to us.

What safety precautions and considerations have you made?

We want people to know that we’re not being unsafe by opening; we do things differently. We have a hygiene hostess dedicated to making sure people are social distancing, wearing their masks, and sweeping and cleaning every 15 minutes. We submitted a 16-17 page re-opening plan with many protocols to explain how we were going to re-open safely and in the right way. We worked with companies from all over North America as well as the Global Wellness Institute and National Hot Springs Business & Trade Association, to pick up different ideas on how to re-open. Because we’re the only ones like us in New England, we needed to learn from these other businesses how to safely open large bodies of water. From our collection of ideas, we were able to assemble and submit our comprehensive plan.  Because we did so much research and tweaking of our protocols, we’ve been able to safely re-open.

What’s different between the new Providence location and the Newport location?

The Providence location is an evolvement. In Providence, we realized we needed more space, so it’s twice as big as the Newport location. It feels like it’s been designed a bit more thoughtfully because we had the space, and we were able to take a lot of guest feedback into consideration. We created a relaxation area that’s separate from the Water Journey, and a direct entrance from the locker room to the Water Journey space, so you don’t have to go into a public area in your towel or bathing suit on your way there. The pool at this location also a waterfall that you can rinse off in.

Eventually, we are going to have a float with a relaxing, sensory deprivation experience. It’s a very dark, quiet room where you don’t see or hear anything. You float on 8-12 inches of water that has 200 lbs of dead sea salt dissolved in it, so you’re extremely buoyant. It gives you the feeling of weightlessness, combined with no light or sound, gives you a deep, extremely relaxing experience.

Otherwise, the spa treatment menu in Providence is the same as Newport.

Are you currently hiring?

We’ve been hiring and training for the past month. It’s amazing to be able to offer new jobs during this time. We needed staff and be able to open and ready immediately and we were able to do that because we were able to support the process with our Newport location. We needed a month to hire and train properly – it’s such an important part of our business and to keep people safe. Our 16-17 page list of protocols is a lot of training and takes a while to get through.

Any plans for further expansion?

We’re still in talks with the ski resort, which we’ll be visiting again hopefully this winter as long as coronavirus allows for us to visit safely. There is still a strong interest on both sides, but will probably be a while before we can plan anything.  We’ve also talked about potentially expanding to Connecticut or Massachusetts.

The Bodhi Spa is now booking appointments at their Providence location 11am-6pm. Street parking and as well as a public paid parking lot are available nearby.

Bodhi Spa, Providence

Located along a prominent mixed residential and commercial corridor on the west side of Providence, the project rejuvenates a formerly dilapidated brick structure and storefront into a new home for The Bodhi Spa.   The spa’s signature “water journey” is dedicated to rejuvenating visitors with a series of hot and cold restorative experiences.  The client’s priority was to create a series of spaces that support the visitor’s experience and total relaxation by providing a safe and healthy environment that respects the need for privacy and security.

Using a human centered approach, KITE shaped the design to create the desired atmosphere needed to support the sensory experience of the water journey.  The architecture of the space results from careful and intentional manipulation of design fundamentals such as light and dark, sound masking and absorption, materiality, and carefully orchestrated system of circulation paths.  The design features a new light-and-sound-secure envelope that imparts a welcoming and vibrant image while at the same time containing the quiet, peaceful and light sensitive hydrotherapy spa program housed within.

The hydrotherapy spa is a complex series of baths and pools each with specific requirements for water chemistry, temperature, and clarity. The quality of the experience and success of the project depended upon coordination of highly technical building systems and construction details.

  • Thermal comfort is achieved through a delicate balance of air and water temperature, relative humidity, space pressurization and air velocity.
  • Organically inspired floor and wall coverings that artfully inspire a sense of calm and wellbeing were selected for resistance to moisture and humidity.
  • Floor layouts, materials and details provide the highest level of safety and accessibility throughout the spa.

Water Journey

Just visited Bodhi Spa to enjoy the Water Journey for the third time. I have been with a group, as a couple, and most recently with another couple. The room is very clean, dim, and music plays. The room is encouraged to be quiet, but it would be nice if some sessions were designated as talking volume. I have been when everyone in the room is interested in being social with their parties and I have been when everyone is very quiet. Stay hydrated at the water station and in the warmer weather, relax outside for some fresh air! You settle up on your way out, so don't forget to pay (I have seen this happen). All you need to bring is a bathing suit! Lockers, robes, sandals, showers, shampoo/conditioner/lotion provided.

I went to the Bodhi Spa for a facial after receiving a gift card for my birthday. The Advanced Age Defying Facial was fabulous. My face and neck felt so wonderful and revived after my treatment. The treatment was comforting and relaxing. My hands haven't felt that soft in a long time. The staff were fantastic. Next trip I plan on adding the Water Journey. I liked the fact that staff did not try to force sell the products to you like most spas do. It was a relaxing journey for me and can't wait to go again!

The hydrotherapy journey was awesome. Leah assisted us with the 2 for 1 Christmas gift cards, and Carrington at the front desk was very accommodating and helpful. Thank you, we will be back

The staff is very friendly and accommodating. I took the Water Journey and couldn't recommend it more. It's definitely a unique experience and one that leaves you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Highly recommended!

The staff here needs more training. My spouse and I arrived early for our 90-min. massages and water journey. We asked if we could leave to go to lunch and then return, since the spa has no food-just flavored waters. (There are tea bags out, but you have to ask a staffer for hot water, which I was told was "downstairs".) The staffer said yes, we could leave for lunch and come back, and discussed restaurants the staffer recommended that were nearby. So we planned our visit accordingly, had our massages (which were very good) and did the water journey until about 1:30, then went to leave to go to lunch--at which time we were told by a different staffer we would have to settle up, there was no re-entry. When we explained we were told we could indeed go to lunch and return, the staffer told us (and was very snippy about it, I have to say, as if it was our fault we were given incorrect information) that the policy is no re-entry, and there is no food allowed. No apology or offer to try and make things right. Clearly having nary a peanut in the spa and prohibiting re-entry is to get people in and out, as it is a small space. I have to admit at this point the misinformation and bad attitude made us just want to leave--hard to enjoy the relaxing water journey when you're angry. After we retrieved our things and went to settle up, I was told someone else that morning was also told they could leave and come back after lunch, and they were none too happy as well when they later learned that was not the case. And then I did get a "Sorry."

Hi, I'm very pleased that you thoroughly enjoyed your two 90min massages which as you mentioned were "very good" it's disappointing that our lack of in and out privileges brought your review down to one star. We do offer our guests complimentary flavored waters and tea. Our staff takes pride in caring for our guests which includes the added service of preparing tea for you. We don't offer food in our water journey space as it is unsanitary and conflicts with the department of health regulations. There are larger facilities that offer meals but have dedicated space for consumption. We are very adamant about including our no re-entry policy on our confirmation emails, website, and booking site. Upon completing your client intake forms you did both check the box that stated you had read and acknowledged our policies, including no in and out privileges and no food allowed on site. As a boutique spa we pride ourselves in servicing as many guests as possible as there is a high demand for this unique and cleansing experience. It has always been a protocol here to not allow guests to leave and then come back, we liken it to a restaurant where you can't reserve a table or seat then leave for a few hours and come back as you loose the ability to welcome any new guests. Thank you, The Bodhi Spa

Loved it. Great experience. The staff, facility and experience were all top notch! A perfect activity for an offseason Newport weekend.

5. Gratuities Gratuities are not included in your service price. Typically, 15- 20 percent is customary, however you may of course leave more or less, depending on the quality of the service. You may leave the tip at the concierge desk when you pay your bill or hand it directly to the therapist.

6. Prenatal Services • Facials are OK – all natural, organic Eminence facials may be enjoyed during all three trimesters of your pregnancy. • Massage and Body Treatments are limited to the second trimester. The first trimester carries an increased risk of complications to expectant mothers. There are pressure points in the body that are thought to initiate contractions or potentially induce labor. In addition, it is difficult to assess a client without their full maternal medical history. For these reasons we don’t offer massages in the first trimester.

The water journey was great. We've done this out in California (which was a bit better due to being outside). The issue with the bodhi Water Journey is that there are three pools and there were 12 people in at the time we were there. The pools are very small and get crowded. They either need more pools or take in less people at a given time.
