Meshuggah released their critically adored “Immutable” full-length last year via Atomic Fire. Recorded at Sweetspot Studios in Halmstad, Sweden, mixed by Rickard Bengtsson and Staffan Karlsson, and mastered by multiple Grammy award winner Vlado Meller (Metallica, Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, System Of A Down), the band’s ninth studio album and follow-up to their Grammy-nominated full-length “The Violent Sleep of Reason” showcases just how far ahead of the pack the band continues to be. Full of surprises and yet instantly recognizable as the work of metal’s most idiosyncratic force, Immutable redefines and redesigns the Meshuggah sound across more than an hour of the most stimulating and engaging music the band has ever composed.

Find the “Immutable” album edition as CD, exclusive vinyl variants, limited vinyl colors, cassette, or merchandise and streaming options here .

Line-up: Jens Kidman – Vocals Mårten Hagström – Guitars Dick Lövgren – Bass Fredrik Thordendal – Guitars Tomas Haake – Drums

What can be said about a Meshuggah show on May 16th, 2019?! This band has certainly earned its swag among metal fandom. The intense energy with which the swedes brutalize crowds of fans that attend its concerts has become legendary and in this NYC show it showed no signs of waning.

Casual in its brutality and armed with intricate technicality, the harsh riffage and odd timings churn the crowd into an all encompassing mosh pit, which much like a black hole, it swallows up anyone near it. The visuals, from the backdrops to the light show, are as striking as is its performance of a set mixing newer material with the older...oh, and the sound production is top notch as well.

Do yourself a favor and prepare for battle when you attend a Meshuggah show. And if the pit takes you, know that it might prove difficult to go home unmarked. You will witness greatness.

I witnessed the great Meshuggah at 170 Russell st, Melbourne, I thought it an interesting venue for such a band to be playing at but the space deterred a monstrous mosh pit from developing which was the intention of many lively fans. It was as expected and didn't lack any substance, a good pinch of spices and progression. Rhythmic and fast paced with moments of slower melodic rhythm encouraged old fans and new fans to be challenged by the huge noise which for some could be an overwhelming barrage of sound, and for some, a welcoming onslaught of mostly unintelligible vocals

God lyd, hører tonene ganske greit! Eneste var at at man nesten ikke klarte å høre Nostrum, men den er så avansert uansett at den skal være sånn. Kjempebra opptreden, men kunne vart ENDA lenger.

MESHUGGAH – announced March/April 2023 Tour of Sweden and Norway!

Adventurous, progressive, brutal, and tirelessly creative –  Meshuggah’s position as the most inventive and creative metal band ever to do it remains undisputed. And 30 years into their illustrious career, the iconic Swedish band shows no signs of decay. 2022 brought the release of their ninth and most fearlessly imaginative studio album, “ Immutable “ yet. Full of surprises and yet instantly recognizable as the work of metal’s most idiosyncratic force, “ Immutable “ refines and redesigns the Meshuggah sound across more than an hour of the most stimulating and absorbing music the band have ever made. Once again, proving that it is possible to create music that is irresistible and intensely complex all at the same time.

On the heels of their celebrated new album “ Immutable ,“ Meshuggah are taking their revered live show to Sweden and Norway in 2023. And as anyone who has witnessed the Swedish juggernauts in concert can testify, it truly is a mind-expanding experience.

The death metal supergroup The Halo Effect will be direct support throughout the tour, while Sweden will also see prominent friends in Scar Symmetry and Orbit Culture as added support.

Part mesmeric, part terrifying … Jens Kidman of Meshuggah performing at Manchester Academy.

Meshuggah review – mechanical Swedish metallers in need of human frailty

Manchester Academy Effectively summoning moods of burning heat and freezing cold, the djent pioneers’ machine-like precision can be tiring

A long the lines of the infinite monkey theorem, if one was to program a group of AI-enhanced robots to create metal music, there’s every chance it would sound like Meshuggah . The Swedish tech-metal pioneers – so revered they are playing the Royal Albert Hall later this week – are known for their punishingly heavy riffs, technical prowess and colossal sonic power, delivered with machine-like precision.

Touring in support of their latest album Immutable , the quintet is greeted with boisterous chants of “Meh-shoo-gah”. Moments earlier, the crowd sings along to Careless Whisper’s saxophone parts, which is played over the PA. It’s probably the most fun they’ll have all night.

Thanks to a superb light show, it’s of little consequence that opening songs Broken Cog and Light the Shortening Fuse are laborious. Discounting drummer Tomas Haake, the four men out front position themselves in front of lifesize screens depicting figures aflame – producing a silhouette effect that’s part mesmeric, part terrifying.

Rational Gaze gets heads banging in earnest, with Haake’s pummelling, polyrhythmic strikes forming its spine. Fredrik Thordendal’s lead guitar break seeps through the curtain of noise like a welcome crack of light. This is an exhibition of unflinching heaviness, but the band has all the dynamic variety of a bulldozer.

End-of-level boss … Jens Kidman.

Another new one, Ligature Marks’ guitars raise a cavernous metallic tapestry. Frontman Jens Kidman arches his back and throws out his forearms like an end-of-level boss. His unearthly vocal ability commands the attention of the room – here the guttural screams evoke a scorched tension.

So long have Meshuggah been labelled innovators and influencers – they inspired the djent subgenre in the late 2000s – that it’s as if the emphasis is more on methodology than the efficacy of their output. Born in Dissonance follows a similar formula with jagged rhythms and cacophonous guitar work. Plenty in the audience are valiant in their attempts to headbang in sync. Kidman roars: “In human tongue we’re apocalypse / For we bring with us obliteration.”

Yet for all their apocalyptic energy, it is chaos controlled. This chops-heavy performance bulges with bluster and metallised textures, but the general impression is a calculated coldness. The destination is invariably as inclement as the journey. Complex, almost mathematical metal is Meshuggah’s speciality, but there’s nothing like human error.

Meshuggah are at Barrowland Ballroom, Glasgow, 30 May; Royal Albert Hall, London, 3 June.

Meshuggah unfurls monolothic, oppressive and layered metal milieu in Grand Rapids tour stop

  • by John Serba
  • December 4, 2023

The Swedish ‘djent’ metal masters delivered “cold savagery balanced with brainy technicianship” at GLC Live at 20 Monroe on Sunday. The Local Spins review by John Serba with photos by Anthony Norkus.

Meshuggah didn’t hit the ground running – they hit it stalking.

Eschewing the usual explosive heavy metal entrance, the Swedish band let a long, ambient intro guide it to the stage, where members parked in front of red lightboxes, striking menacing silhouettes.

Opening number “Broken Cog” didn’t thunder and rage, instead leading a game Grand Rapids audience into bleakness, vocalist Jens Kidman almost whispering the lyrics as the band layered eerie guitar textures atop each other.

The vibe established on Sunday at GLC Live at 20 Monroe, the band then, well, let rip. “Rational Gaze” and “Perpetual Black Second” – both from Meshuggah’s 2002 classic album “Nothing” – followed, escalating the aggression from controlled blunt-force strikes to a nigh-overwhelming chaos.

For a band that hadn’t played Grand Rapids since 1999, opening for Slayer at the now-demolished Orbit Room, it was a reintroduction to remember.

Now, Meshuggah isn’t always so varied. Their M.O. is to cycle, angular, chugging, off-kilter riffs atop splashy, almost jazzy, drums, the rhythms purposely out of sync; but when they catch up to each other, look out, because that’s when the violence begins.

The band’s cosmic take on staccato thrash combined with its existential lyrics and atmospherics established Meshuggah as a singular act praised for its musicianship and technical innovation – and creators of “djent” subgenre, named as such for the way those riffs sound: djent-djent-djent.

You can’t really dance to it. Hell, you can barely headbang to it. How Meshuggah got so popular is anyone’s guess, but a couple thousand people piled into a venue defined by its blah big-square-box aesthetics and crummy sightlines to experience this esoteric music, and bask in its deep, ominous vibes.

THE BAND’S PRESENTATION: PSYCHEDELIC BACKDROPS, HORRIFIC IMAGERY

Meshuggah’s compositions tend toward intently miniscule variations on a theme. Sometimes, they’re driven by basslines that writhe like robotic constrictors (“Perpetual Gaze”); sometimes, they showcase the controlled tumult of drummer Tomas Haake (“Abysmal Eye,” show highlight “Humiliative”).

But most times, songs sound similar, guitarists Fredrik Thordendal and Marten Hagstrom trading between repetitious riffing and noodly, atonal solos, subtleties lost a bit in the live setting. The formula requires musicianship so precise, it’s almost robotic in execution – and that kind of cold savagery balanced with brainy technicianship is part of the appeal.

I’m not saying they can be too repetitive; they just border on it. But I’m also saying we should be grateful for the band’s presentation, which incorporates a highly effective display of lasers, swirling spotlights and strobes in front of psychedelic backdrops adorned with horrific imagery. It was one part Tool, one part David Lynch and one part “Shit, I Didn’t Smoke Enough Pot.”

There’s a monotony to Meshuggah that’s monolithic and oppressive – and wholly intentional. They’re not writing hits, but cultivating a mood. Notably, they flubbed the intro to “Born in Dissonance,” halting the number, Kidman laughing, and taking a moment to get back on track. Turns out, they’re not robots after all.

Knoxville’s Whitechapel opened the show with 30 minutes of thoroughly American metalcore, with grinding, complicated, not particularly memorable riffs leading into moshworthy breakdowns. They were followed by In Flames , veteran Swedes with more than 30 years in the melodic death metal business. Their set mostly stuck to the latter two-thirds of its career, although a spirited run-through of “Behind Space,” a lickety-split riffster from 1994’s “Lunar Strain” record, tickled the cockles of aging fans (guilty!).

For the rest, “Take This Life,” “Everything’s Gone” and “Cloud Connected” were plenty fine, raging and controlled, for the most part departing from the speedy dual-guitar runs that put the band at the forefront of the ’90s Euro-metal movement, but never forgoing the melodic sensibilities that define them.

It might sound strange to associate "storytelling" with instrumental music. But ANIMALS AS LEADERS jettisoned the rules, limitations, and boundaries of conventional rock music from the start. Armed with palette-expanding eight-string guitars, rich synths, and pummeling percussive grooves, the trio is beloved by metalheads, aspiring virtuosos, jazz fanatics, and casual listeners alike. As Pitchfork observed, " ANIMALS AS LEADERS have walked the tightrope between sheer technical virtuosity and actual emotional resonance." Even without vocals, this is intimate, mythmaking music.

ANIMALS AS LEADERS began as a solo outlet for guitarist Tosin Abasi , whose creative partnership with classically trained guitarist Javier Reyes and Berklee-educated drummer Matt Garstka is built on a shared love of everything from fusion to technical death metal. Garstka graced the cover of Modern Drummer in 2015. In one of his many appearances on their cover, Guitar World named Tosin among the Guitarists Of The Decade. Rolling Stone featured him as part of their "Young Guns" series. The Chicago Tribune declared him "the closest thing prog-metal has to an Eddie Van Halen ."

Quickly ascending beyond the traditional confines of instrumental rock, ANIMALS AS LEADERS owe much to their unique blend of precision and feel, both in abundance on album five, "Parrhesia". The trio remain connected to their fiercely engaged audience via captivating shows and projects.

Kerrang! included "Weightless" among its Best Albums Of 2011. "The Joy Of Motion" entered the Billboard 200 at No. 24 in 2014, and "The Madness Of Many" cracked the Top 20 in 2016. Now more than a decade into their career, a quick look at the bands they've toured with demonstrates the consistently diverse appeal of ANIMALS AS LEADERS . It's a list that includes KORN , DEFTONES , DANCE GAVIN DANCE , THRICE , MESHUGGAH , UNDEROATH , TESSERACT and CIRCA SURVIVE as well as major festivals with the likes of LINKIN PARK , AVENGED SEVENFOLD and SLIPKNOT .

ANIMALS AS LEADERS offer more than clinic-ready musicianship and proficiency. A focus on mood, texture, and emotive power elevates the material past any preconceived notions, resulting in a fascinatingly unique phenomenon, with an unlikely and profound appeal across multiple subgenres.

"We all know how talented the guys in ANIMALS AS LEADERS are. Absurdly talented," declared MetalSucks . "They are one of the finest, most interesting units in modern music."
