Review: luxury gold in ireland.

Posted by David Porter on Monday, July 11, 2022 · 6 Comments

Here is our review after experiencing a 12-day small-group tour of Ireland with Luxury Gold .

Carol and I are just home after spending nearly two weeks in Ireland on a small-group, 5-star land tour with our friends from Luxury Gold.

The Best Way to Experience Ireland

While ocean, river, and expedition cruising is very popular because you’re only unpacking once, many destinations in the world don’t lend themselves to a cruise.

When it comes to Ireland, most cruise lines will visit Dublin and Belfast, leaving vast parts of Ireland’s beauty and charm untouched.

For this reason, we decided that our trip to Ireland would be on land. And, as we do not enjoy traveling with large packs of people, we also agreed that we would travel in a small group and with a luxury small group tour company that offered guests luxury accommodations.

It’s been over 10 years since Carol and I have experienced a small-group luxury tour.  We greatly enjoyed our Luxury Gold experience in Ireland.  Let me share a few of the reasons why:

Why Luxury Gold?

  • The Guide – As you spend a fair amount of time traveling from place to place on a land journey, you must consider the person guiding you on your way. First of all, our guide was our traveling concierge. She managed every trip detail along the way and recommended restaurants and sights for our free time. But more importantly, she was a licensed travel guide. The amount of information she passed along to us on our way was pretty remarkable. Further, she was native to Ireland.  If you’re going to learn about a country, the only way to learn is through the eyes of a local. For example, having a guide imported from the United States will significantly change the experience. When our guide, Erica Dalton-Joyce, talked about some of the troubling times in Ireland’s history, you could feel the emotion as she shared these stories from her native perspective. And from the opposite perspective, her Irish pride was also palpable as she shared all that is good about her home country. Oh, I also immensely enjoyed Erica’s Irish brogue. It just wouldn’t be the same to learn about Ireland’s “wee people” without the color of her native tongue.

  • The Hotels – Hotels and resorts are an important piece of any land journey. A lumpy mattress, or a room the size of a closet can cast a shadow of gloom on your experience.  To complicate this for luxury travelers, there may not be 5-star hotels in every destination along the way. Here again, I thought Luxury Gold did a wonderful job.  Where 5-star hotels weren’t available, we enjoyed fabulous 4-star properties.  And we even enjoyed two nights in Ashford Castle which would meet the needs of even the most discriminate 5-star traveler.

Traditional Irish Breakfast

Traditional Irish Breakfast

  • The Pace – We found the pace of the tour to be a good blend of sightseeing and relaxation. Certainly, our time in the coach traveling from place to place was relaxing and comfortable, but we also enjoyed the fact that three of our mornings included a “relaxed start” to grab a little extra sleep. And our earliest start time on the whole journey was 8:30. Some tour companies will have you up and out early in the morning.  There was none of that here.

Summing it all up

I was a little apprehensive about doing a small-group land journey.  The first bit of reluctance revolved around the frequent packing and unpacking required to move from one place to the other. However, each of the hotels loaded our luggage in the coach each morning, so we weren’t lugging heavy luggage each day. And we learned to pack differently so that we could live out of our suitcase packing cubes. We quickly developed a system of what needed to come out of the suitcase at each location (typically bathroom necessities), and our specially designed suitcase cubes kept our dirty laundry separate from the clean.

My biggest relaxing deep breath came when I saw and experienced how comfortable the coaches were with Luxury Gold. We had plenty of room, and reclining seats, and we all greatly enjoyed the Irish countryside as we traveled around the country.

So, the question becomes: would I go on another Luxury Gold small-group land tour? Yes. Yes. And, Yes.

In fact, there are a number of destinations that I would love to enjoy in Luxury Gold style. Japan quickly comes to mind. And so does Scotland.  And while we have already experienced Italy a number of times, we think Italy with Luxury Gold would also be the cat’s meow.  I’m also thinking that New Zealand would be an excellent destination to visit by land.

So, while we have become one of the nation’s leading cruise booking travel advisors, because of our Luxury Gold experience, I am now far more open to exploring a destination by land.

Thank you Luxury Gold for opening my eyes to land journeys done right.

That was a wonderful write up…and I really like the Irish Flat Cap. Good choice.

Thanks, Kathleen.

Thank you so much for the review. My husband and I are booked on the same trip in late September. You answered so many questions that we had, so helpful. I am finding it very difficult to book flights to Belfast without several long layovers, so we are going to fly in to Dublin and take the bus from the airport to Belfast, will have an extra day and night in Belfast. Did you have any difficulty with your flights? Thank you.

You’re welcome, Maureen. You’re going to have a great time. Flights are a constant battle right now. I hope everything works out for you and you can enjoy all that Ireland has to offer.

Disappointing tour of Japan!

We are on a tour of Japan right now but totally disappointed. Poor low quality hotels so far, poor food and our tour operator has not been briefed at all!! No introductions to the group , no idea of our expectations, no little nice to have extras, no in-depth knowledge or Q&A. We have 7 days left and no response from Luxury Gold. Paid £15000 for 2 people!!! What has the money been spent on?

Took the 2 week tour of Italy

Took the 2 week tour of Italy. Extremely expensive, but everything was absolutely first class. The hotels were stunning, typically $500/night rooms. The tour guides were the very best in the business. The tour bus drivers were solid. The food was amazing. Every whim was addressed. My only complaint was that the pre-travel customer service was awful, phone hold times of 2 hours, then to be connected to somebody who knew nothing. Employee turnover was high.

Why Luxury Gold by Insight Vacations is your best bet for VIP clients

Post date: Mar 31 2017

Date: Mar 31 2017

By: Travelweek Group

Cris David, President-Insight Vacations Canada

Have you heard about Luxury Gold yet? If not, it’s only a matter of time until it crosses your radar because this deluxe touring brand by Insight Vacations is steadily gaining traction. Having just launched itineraries in Southeast Asia and Australasia, Luxury Gold is expanding its presence worldwide, offering luxury product in some of the most exotic destinations. In this edition of Friday Five, Cris David, President-Insight Vacations Canada tells us what the brand stands for, how it differs from Insight, and the top selling points for agents to use to close the sale.

1. Tell us about Luxury Gold in a nutshell.

Luxury Gold was launched officially in 2016, but was the culmination of a pilot program that began two years earlier to introduce a deluxe touring brand under the Insight Vacations banner. Insight Vacations is part of the family-owned Travel Corporation and the Tollman family has specialized in high-end hospitality and luxury travel for close to 100 years. The Travel Corporation group of companies includes several brands that epitomize the ethos of luxury and style, which has been the Tollman family hallmark for four generations, most notably Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection and the unique 17-property boutique hospitality company Red Carnation Hotels.

As the core business of the Travel Corporation is escorted touring, embodied by iconic brands such as Trafalgar, Contiki and Insight, there was a strong feeling within the company that the family legacy of luxury and service should be extended to the touring category, with the addition of a Luxury touring product. As Insight Vacations is positioned as a Premium brand with a reputation for quality expressed by its tagline “The Art of Touring in Style”, it made perfect sense to create and launch the new luxury touring product under the Insight flag. After two years of a luxury program being featured as an extension of Insight Vacations, in 2016 Luxury Gold was launched as a stand-alone brand to clarify its unique identity in the eyes of travel agents and consumers.

2. What are the main differences between an Insight Vacations tour and a Luxury Gold tour?

There are three main things that differentiate a Luxury Gold tour from an Insight Vacations Premium tour. Firstly, the Luxury Gold itineraries have been designed to feature an array of Exclusive VIP Experiences that provide guests with truly unique opportunities not available to the general public. For example, Luxury Gold guests experience private, out-of-hours visits to iconic attractions such as the Doge’s Palace in Venice and Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna, both of which they enter after public visiting hours for an intimate, private tour with a local historian.

The second major difference with Luxury Gold is the accommodation – an unmatched collection of five-star, deluxe and boutique hotels handpicked for their exceptional ratings, service, location, comfort and character. One example is the Milestone in London, ranked the top hotel in the U.K. in Tripadvisor’s Traveller’s Choice Awards.

The third aspect of a Luxury Gold itinerary that is truly outstanding is the cuisine. A great deal of care and effort has gone into ensuring that Luxury Gold guests have the best possible culinary experience of the destination they’re visiting. To this end all Luxury Gold tours in Europe include meals in Michelin-starred restaurants showcasing the skills of the most celebrated local chefs. As well as haute cuisine, Luxury Gold guests also sample the best authentic local fare lovingly prepared in authentic family-run bistros and enjoy hands on cookery master classes with local chefs to learn the secrets of regional signature dishes. Not to mention excellent local wines served with meals on every journey!

3. Luxury Gold now travels to Australia, New Zealand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. Why these destinations? And what’s the criteria when selecting new luxury destinations?

Luxury Gold is now truly a worldwide collection featuring more than 30 itineraries on six continents. With its emphasis on unique, authentic encounters, magnificent cuisine and superlative accommodation, the newly introduced destinations of Southeast Asia and Australasia provide perfect environments to deliver the Luxury Gold experience to guests.

The Australia product provides a unique take on the idea of Luxury Travel, providing a sumptuous and high-end safari experience in the outback, but never straying from the core values of comfort, service, memorable experiences and outstanding cuisine. We have found that Luxury Gold guests are very partial to more exotic destinations like Peru and Southeast Asia. The unique sights, flavours and landscapes of Indochina and South America have tremendous appeal for those seeking new experiences, especially when they can count on the guaranteed quality, luxury, comfort and full concierge service provided on a Luxury Gold vacation.

4. Of the four new destinations, which would you suggest for a client who’s looking for the ultimate luxury experience?

I would suggest visiting Peru on the ‘Treasures of the Incas’ itinerary. This exceptional tour has proven extremely popular in Canada, and with good reason. The incredible history, magnificent landscapes, wonderful people, colourful traditions and world-class cuisine of Peru are given maximum exposure on this wonderful tour. Luxury Gold’s ‘Treasures of the Incas’ is one of the only itineraries on the market that stays two nights at Macchu Picchu, giving guests the opportunity to soak up the atmosphere and of this magical locale from their base at the stunning Inkaterra Macchu Picchu hotel. Guests will dine in some of the finest restaurants in Peru, celebrated as the world’s top culinary travel destination, and they’ll experience traditional meals prepared using the ancient methods of the Incas as well. In Cusco they’ll be introduced to the ancient Peruvian art of weaving by the traditional weavers at an inspiring artisan-enterprise collective supported by The Travel Corporation’s TreadRight Foundation.

5. What are the top 3 selling features of Luxury Gold that agents can use to close the deal?

1) Guests will receive outstanding personalized attention from the Traveling Concierge accompanying their tour. Aside from ensuring that the tour runs like clockwork, he or she will be on hand to smooth the way, open doors and make any special arrangements the guest desires.

2) The average group size on a Luxury Gold tour is 28, guaranteeing a lively group dynamic with the company of like-minded travellers to share the experience with whilst enabling the Traveling Concierge to anticipate the needs of all guests and provide attentive personalized service. In addition, small group departures are available to Europe, with a maximum of 24 guests, and Australiasia and Southeast Asia tours operate with a maximum of 20 and 26 guests, respectively.

3) The other deciding factors for Luxury Gold are as described above: VIP Exclusive Experiences and out-of-hours private visits, outstanding hotels and exceptional cuisine.

The 10 under-the-radar places a luxury travel planner is recommending to her clients this year

  • I'm a luxury travel planner, and these are destinations I think will be popular this year.
  • For a beach getaway in Europe , I recommend Sardinia, Corsica, and Costa Navarino
  • I suggest Niseko, Japan, for outdoor enthusiasts or Ticino, Switzerland, as a Lake Como alternative.

Insider Today

With Americans spending more on travel and experiences, now could be just the time to book a trip.

I'm a luxury travel advisor, and I book five-star hotels and luxury vacations around the world for wealthy and high-profile clients.

My clients always ask me about under-the-radar luxury destinations that feel exclusive and are not overly crowded by tourists.

Here are a few places I'm recommending to my clients in 2024.

Ticino, Switzerland

luxury gold tours reviews

This charming Italian-speaking region is also known as Switzerland's "Little Italy."

I recommend visiting Swissminiatur in Melide, an open-air miniature museum that's great for families with kids. I also suggest visiting the well-manicured Parco Ciani, a beautiful park with statues and fountains that overlook Lago di Lugano.

The region's small lakeside town Ascona is not to be missed. Take a boat cruise there and have lunch with a view of the cafe-lined promenade situated on Lago Maggiore.

You can also take a short boat ride to the Brissago Islands, which consist of two islands. Only Isola Grande is open to the public. There, you can walk around the botanical garden and have a meal at the dreamy, neoclassical Villa Emden .

Sardinia, Italy

luxury gold tours reviews

Sardinia is also known for its nightlife and white-sand beaches. This island in the Mediterranean is also a hot spot for celebrities.

The northern side of the island is dotted with upscale beach clubs and luxury resorts such as Romazzino, Costa Smeralda, and Hotel Cala di Volpe.

Botswana, Africa

luxury gold tours reviews

Most visitors go to Kenya for an African safari but Botswana is better suited for a high-end safari experience with luxury accommodations since there are a limited number of camps.

You can spot the Big 5 in the Okavango Delta, which offers a good mix of land and water safaris. Or visit Chobe National Park, which has a very high population of elephants.

Niseko, Japan

luxury gold tours reviews

Niseko offers some of the best powder for skiing in the winter. In the summer, the area is known for its outdoor activities.

It has natural hot springs, river activities, golf courses, hiking, and mountain biking. If you're up for an adventure in the spring or summer, I recommend climbing to the top of Mt. Yotei, a volcano and one of the famous mountains for skiing. The hike is not for the faint of heart!

Many people visit Tokyo to see the cherry blossoms , but you can also see them in Niseko. They're often in full bloom at the beginning of May.

Corsica, France

luxury gold tours reviews

Corsica has the perfect mix of rugged landscapes, hiking trails, rich history, and lively beaches. Its Plage de Palombaggia has stunning clear blue waters and a long stretch of white sand.

Corsica also has several vineyards — including a few along the coast — so you can take scenic tours and go wine tasting on the island.

Costa Navarino, Greece

luxury gold tours reviews

Skip overcrowded Greek islands like Santorini and Mykonos. Instead, vacation in Costa Navarino, a coastal town in the Peloponnese known for its world-class golf courses and epic outdoor adventures.

If you want to shop for artisanal goods made by local designers, stop by Navarino Agora, a new outdoor marketplace with an open-air cinema.

Jose Ignacio, Uruguay

luxury gold tours reviews

Jose Ignacio is a chic beach town that comes alive after Christmas (during the region's summer season) when locals from Uruguay and nearby Argentina flock here for vacation.

The former fishing village is anchored by the faro, or lighthouse, near Playa del Faro Jose Ignacio — my favorite beach for people-watching and kite surfing. Spend a day soaking up the sun and check out the trendy seaside bars and restaurants.

Vals, Switzerland

luxury gold tours reviews

Vals is a small, quiet alpine village in Graubünden with only about 1,000 inhabitants.

It's a hiker's paradise with wide open landscapes and rolling green hills. Try the moderate hike around Lake Zervreila at the base of the gondola in the center of Vals — you'll be rewarded with spectacular lake and village views.

A crown jewel of Vals is 7132 Hotel, an architectural marvel designed by prominent Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. The hotel is famous for its thermal spa made of local quartzite.

West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong

luxury gold tours reviews

This waterfront district in Hong Kong is an art hub with multiple major arts and performance venues . M+ and Hong Kong Palace Museum are two of the newer museums that opened in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

The Xiqu Centre in The West Kowloon Cultural District is an especially cool performing arts venue where you can watch a Cantonese opera.

Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

luxury gold tours reviews

This warm and sunny region is perfect for foodies and wine lovers, with over 100 wineries and many restaurants that serve farm-to-table food.

It's one of New Zealand's oldest wine regions and a great alternative to European ones. The vast majority of New Zealand's cabernet sauvignon and merlot are produced in Hawke's Bay.

Plus, the area's flat trails make it ideal for wine and food tours by bicycle.

Kids will love the National Aquarium of New Zealand and Napier's Marine Parade, an outdoor playground with a skate park, gardens, and mini-golf.

An insider’s guide to grand hotel du palais royal.

Grand Hotel du Palais Royal

Nestled between the Royal Garden and the Louvre , Grand Hotel du Palais Royal is a chic boutique bolthole with one of the most exclusive addresses in Paris, the city of love .

Sitting just across the street from the imperial Jardin du Palais Royal , famously where Emily Cooper would frequently lunch in the Netflix hit series Emily in Paris, it’s a short stroll from a plethora of cultural affairs from catching a play at La Comédie-Française to trotting around Place Vendôme square, dotted along the River Seine.

Glaring up at its grand limestone façade, a long rolling black carpet flows through grand oak doors guarded by baroque iron lanterns, olive trees, and potted Japanese holly under a Parisian marquise canopy as you enter a black marble reception with pinus trees, muscular statuettes, peach velvet curtains, and a tiled palm reception desk under a golden recessed ceiling.

Glide through a cubed doorway as you enter its palatial lobby with grand marble pillars, tropical flowers, busts of French philosophers and writers Voltaire and Rousseau ( made at the Louvre’s sculpture academy), and little cubed rooms sprouting off from cozy boutiques to sexy dark lounges with long rouge curtains, potted hydrangeas, leather upholstered chairs, tiered lampshades, cream cotton sofas with lime cushions, and walls wrapped in abstract artwork.

Here, you’ll be greeted by the hotel’s expert Clefs d’Or concierge – a doorway into Paris’ haute culture, from arranging a dinner at the two Michelin-starred L’Oiseau Blanc to a private boat trip whisking you between the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame.

Marble-dotted corridors lead to a winding iron staircase with golden railing balls, surrounded by statuettes, medusa-like lamps, and a gigantic cinnabar bolted suitcase, spiraling up to Grand Hotel du Palais Royal ’s 59 rooms and suites.

Swipe your keycard and swan into your lavish duplex Eiffel Tower Suite , set across 590 square feet, as you’re greeted by a custard chaise lounge and a long peach carpet spilling up a staircase that twirls into your open-plan bedroom and coved Parisian loft.

Bright and minimalistic, it boasts oak parquet floors, mango alcoves, espresso silk curtains, magnolia pampas grass, Japanese ceramic vases, rustic arched shutters, retro carpets, a cream brushed cotton sofa with Jacobean floral cushions, mesh leather chairs surrounding a calacatta gold marble dining table, and a king-sized bed with two flat-screen TVs, Marshall Bluetooth speakers, a Nespresso machine, and a minibar stocked with Moët & Chandon in plentiful.

Eiffel Tower Suite

Glide through a frosted glass doorway into your Venetian marble bathroom with a cubed soaking tub, a walk-in rain marble shower, nickel mirror lamps, Diptyque products, and two fluffy bathrobes and slippers.

Or tiptoe out onto your snug iron terrace overlooking the Louvre Museum , the Eiffel Tower and the Sacré-Coeur Basilica , as you sip a glass of Laurent-Perrier or arrange a private terrace breakfast with your personal concierge – nibbling on smoked salmon avocado toast with French pastries, maple syrup pancakes sprinkled with berries, and vegan chia pudding with a homemade detox juice.

Downstairs, a stretching corridor lined with wine cellars, terracotta medallions, and string lanterns flows into Le Café 52, with mirrored walls, steel blue tables, bohemian rattan chairs, woven linen sofas, blown glass vases, and a hammered brass pendant light swinging above.

Outside, little candy cane and zebra rattan chairs enclose black granite tables bordered by a wall of Japanese cheesewood and olive trees looking out onto the iconic Place de Valois square.

Head Chef Maxime Raab serves up healthy bites, slightly less traditional, from crispy halloumi to organic focaccia, cucumber gazpacho, and raw zucchini tagliatelle with pine nuts and yellow peach.

Sink your teeth into succulent ginger steamed fish or try scrumptious roasted aubergine with shiso yogurt and fusilli al pomodoro pasta with taggiasche olives, and capers – complete with a 70% dark chocolate mousse, seasonal clafoutis with almond ice cream, or vine peach sorbet with rooibos syrup.

Retire to the seductive, lowlight, Café 52 cocktail bar wrapped in tangerine with dark oak floors, glowing tray ceilings, long drapes, silver woven chairs, dried wildflowers, cream linen sofas, and golden leaf wine cellars, where you can pull up a cream leather stool at a limestone bar wrapped in camel suede and watch mixologists prepare an Amalfi ( with vodka absolute blue, italicus and ginger beer) or a Martinico ( with gin Beefeater, vermouth and eucalyptus) – or choose from one of thirty champagnes.

Ivory marble steps wind down to its Spa by Holidermie with porcelain ceramics, bohemian oriental partitions, mustard cracked vases, an intimate gym with spin bikes, treadmills, and cardio equipment; a candle-lit deep turquoise tiled whirlpool, and a secret frosted glass door leading into a glittery mosaic hammam.

Spa by Holidermie

You can also indulge in a flash glow facial using Gua Sha pink quartz drainage to refresh your skin or a Balinese massage using traditional Indonesian techniques from acupressure to reflexology to stimulate circulation, oxygen, and Qi energy.

Chic, Parisian, finery.
