Does travel insurance still cover you if you've had a drink?

Don't get caught out by tricky alcohol exclusions that could void your policy..

two people drinking while on holiday

Fact-checked

Checked for accuracy by our qualified fact-checkers and verifiers. Find out more about fact-checking at CHOICE .

Need to know

  • A few drinks won't void your travel insurance policy, but insurers may deny claims that result from you being drunk
  • How travel insurers define drunkenness can vary considerably
  • If you disagree with your insurer's assessment of how the drink affected you, you can dispute their decision

For many of us, enjoying the local liquor is part of enjoying a holiday. It's as inseparable as insurance cover with loopholes. But if you have a few drinks while you're on vacation, will travel insurance still cover you? We look at how insurers apply alcohol exclusions and what you can expect.

On this page:

Does any travel insurance cover alcohol?

When do insurers apply the alcohol exclusion, how does a travel insurer define 'under the influence of alcohol', how does the insurer know you're drunk, what to do if your travel insurer denies your claim, other alcohol and drug exclusions.

Having a couple of drinks won't void your travel insurance cover for your whole holiday. But there is no travel insurance that will cover you for events that arise because you were under the influence of alcohol.

If you have an accident or lose some personal possessions, and the insurer thinks that occurred because you were drunk, they will probably deny your claim.

Having a couple drinks won't void your travel insurance cover for your whole holiday

The way insurers see it, they don't cover events that you could have foreseen and taken action to avoid. So for example, if a volcano affects travellers to Bali, your insurance won't cover you if you know about the volcano but don't take action to avoid being impacted by it.

If you're under the influence of alcohol, your ability to foresee events is blurred, and you may not be capable of taking the right action to avoid that event.

How the alcohol exclusion affects you can be as innocuous as having a few drinks at a wedding and slipping and breaking a leg, or something more sinister like having your drink spiked at a nightclub.

Here's an  example provided by Smartraveller  for the CHOICE travel insurance buying guide:

"Lee (not his real name) was attending a wedding in Phuket, Thailand, when he fell down some stairs at the hotel, breaking his leg and several ribs. Because he'd been celebrating with a few alcoholic drinks, his insurer refused his claim for medical expenses, citing his intoxication at the time.

"The incident cost Lee $10,300 in medical expenses, which had to be paid in full before he could leave hospital. Lee's injuries also meant he was unable to work for the next six weeks, causing further financial hardship."

While all travel insurers will exclude cover for events that happen because you're drunk, how they word the exclusion varies between insurers.

Insurer World2Cover, for example, excludes "any claim arising from or related to… you being under the influence or addicted to intoxicating liquor or drugs".

For Allianz, it's when you're "...affected by any intoxicating liquor or drug to the extent that your physical, or mental functions, or your judgement are impaired".

"Under the influence" or "affected by" alcohol is a grey area, but it generally comes into play at the point where the event that caused your claim wouldn't have occurred if it weren't for you being drunk.

Even if you've had a drink, the insurer still has to prove you were drunk and that this intoxication actually caused the event that led to your claim

If you slip on a wet walkway when you're drunk, an insurer may say that if you weren't drunk, you would've had better judgement and been able to avoid that slippery walkway, or at least walked more carefully across it.

Other insurers will define a specific blood alcohol content (BAC) over which they'll exclude your claim. This gives a bit more clarity to what being under the influence actually is.

Go Insurance specifies 0.05% (the legal driving limit), regardless of whether you're driving or not, while Cover-More states 0.19%. Some people may struggle to walk in a straight line at that level of intoxication.

You may find a clause in your travel insurance policy that obliges you to agree to a blood alcohol or breath analysis. So if the insurer suspects you've had some drinks, they may get you to take a test before they agree to cover your claim.

If insurers don't get their hands on a BAC test, they may use other methods to estimate your BAC in order to decline your claim. In a case published earlier this year, Cover-More estimated a BAC based on the policyholder's weight and the drinks on their bar bill.

Video: CHOICE calls for more transparency about alcohol exclusions in travel insurance.

If your travel insurer denies your claim because they reckon you had too much to drink, but you disagree with them, the first step is to lodge an internal dispute with your insurer. Check the insurer's website or product disclosure statement (PDS) for their official complaints procedure and contact (usually an email address).

If the insurer still denies your claim after you lodge a dispute with them, you can raise a dispute with the independent ombudsman, the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA).

Even if you've had a drink, the insurer still has to prove you were drunk and that this intoxication actually caused the event that led to your claim.

If the insurer still denies your claim after you lodge a dispute with them, you can raise a dispute with AFCA

A ruling by the Financial Ombudsman Service, AFCA's predecessor (this was a while ago but we cling onto cases where the insurer lost), found that an insurer was not able to rely on the exclusion to deny a claim for a woman who left a backpack in a taxi after a couple of drinks:

"...she [admits to] consuming a number of drinks on the evening but was not under the influence nor did the loss arise directly or indirectly from the influence of alcohol. Other than this statement, there is no evidence regarding the influence of alcohol.

"The Applicant claims the backpack was left in the cab in the confusion of trying to settle the cab fare whilst at the same time keeping an eye on children. There is no evidence to contradict this.

"The evidence is not sufficient to establish that the loss arose directly or indirectly from the influence of alcohol."

Search your PDS for the alcohol or liquor clause to understand how your claims might be limited. And while you're there, check the full list of general exclusions. It's a sobering read.

Another exclusion you'll come across is for claims that relate to the treatment of alcoholism, drug addiction or substance addiction. This may mean your visit to a rehabilitation clinic, but it can also extend to other people.

For example, if you want to interrupt your holiday to travel home to visit a sick relative, the insurer may deny your claim if your relative is sick due to chronic use of alcohol or drugs.

Drinking alcohol could void your travel insurance policy should you need to make a claim. Here's why

Two glasses of bubbly wine on a bench with water and islands in the background

Bottoms up? Maybe not.

Part of the appeal of a holiday is to let your hair down, explore a new city, and maybe enjoy a couple of drinks by the pool.

And while you're certainly allowed to have a drink on holiday, what many people don't know is that alcohol consumption can invalidate your travel insurance policy should you need to make a claim.

This means that if you're intoxicated, slip and break your arm while on a trip overseas, your travel insurance company likely won't approve your claim nor cover your medical expenses.

West Australian police officer Ella Cutler, 25, was denied cover by her travel insurer after she suffered critical injuries from a 10-metre fall in Croatia. It was reported alcohol was present in her system at the time of the accident.

The question whether you're covered for alcohol comes down to how each insurer interprets its own exclusions.

So, here's what you need to know before you jet off on your overseas trip.

Why are alcohol-fuelled accidents not covered?

Choice's travel expert Jodi Bird said insurance may not be the safety net people expect it to be.

"Travel insurance covers you for unforeseen events, but insurers rely to an extent on your own ability to foresee events and take evasive action," Mr Bird said.

"If you've had a few too many drinks, your ability to foresee events is blurred.

"So there's a much higher risk of something going wrong, and if an event has too high a risk of actually occurring, then insurers don't want to cover it."

Jodi Bird wears glasses and a white button-up shirt

How can I find out if my insurer covers alcohol-related claims?

Read the fine print.

The fine print of a travel insurance policy is known as the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) .

The PDS lays out the terms and conditions of your policy, including what you're covered for (inclusions) and what you're not (exclusions). Here is where you'll find the exclusion that relates to the consumption of liquor and drugs.

Generally, most travel insurance policies will have an exclusion that reads along the lines of:

We will not pay for claims arising directly or indirectly from you while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, unless prescribed by a medical practitioner.

If you're looking to locate the exact section in the PDS that mentions alcohol, you can use the Ctrl-F keys to search the document.

"If you're searching your PDS for the alcohol exclusions, it's worth checking the full list of general exclusions while you're there. It's a sobering read," Mr Bird said.

A woman's hands hit "control f" on a laptop keyboard as she searches a product disclosure statement PDF.

How does an insurer know if you were under the influence?

Insurers will look at police and medical records, and hotel reports, to determine whether the intentional consumption of alcohol caused the accident.

Your social media account may also come back to bite you as insurance investigators could use these sites to verify your claim.

Mr Bird says your policy may include a clause that obliges you to agree to a blood alcohol or breath analysis.

"So if the insurer suspects you've had some drinks they may get you to take a test before they agree to cover your claim," he said.

"Alternatively, we've seen insurers get their hands on the bar bill where you've been drinking, and come up with their own estimate of your blood alcohol content based on how much you've had and how much you weigh."

Todd Nelson, the CEO of insurer Cover-More, said his company would undertake extensive enquiries before making a decision on any claim where alcohol may be a factor.

"This may involve obtaining an independent report from a specialist toxicologist as to the potential amount of alcohol consumed and the impact this could have had in contributing to the incident," Mr Nelson said.

He also noted they could look at securing:

  • The report of a medical practitioner or forensic expert
  • The witness report of a third party
  • A person's own admission
  • The description of events described to them by the policyholder or the treating medical professional (e.g. paramedic, nurse, or doctor) as documented in their records

How much is too much?

It all comes down to the insurer you're with and what they deem an indirect or direct claim arising from alcohol consumption.

While some travel insurance policies are quite vague when it comes to this, there are a few that specifically refer to an individual's blood alcohol concentration (BAC).

Cover-More, NRMA, and Budget Direct all state the following in their exclusions sections:

Claims involving, arising from or related to Your impairment due to You drinking too much alcohol: which is evidenced by the results of a blood test which show that your blood alcohol concentration level is 0.19% or above.

This is almost four times above the legal driving BAC limit range in Australia, which is 0.05%.

"Many travel insurers will just exclude cover for claims that arise from you 'being under the influence of alcohol'," Mr Bird said.

"That's a grey line, but it generally comes into play at the point where the event that caused your claim wouldn't have occurred if it weren't for you being drunk."

A yellow alcohol breath test machine that has a red sign saying "over range"

Can your claim be voided if drugs are detected?

The PDS will likely state that your insurer won't pay out for any claim related to drug use (even if it's legal at your destination), unless the drugs were prescribed by a medical professional and taken in accordance.

"Policies have a general exclusion relating to substance abuse, including drug abuse (whether over the counter, prescription or otherwise) or ingestion of any non-prescription drug or substance such as marijuana, ecstasy, and heroin," Mr Nelson said.

What are other common exclusions from travel insurance policies?

Along with alcohol and drug use, there are some other common circumstances where you won't be covered by your travel insurance policy.

These include, but are not limited to:

  • Visiting a country or region to which Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has applied a 'Do Not Travel' advisory
  • Leaving possessions unattended in a public place
  • Claiming against an unapproved medical condition
  • Participating in high-risk sports and activities without the proper level of cover
  • Hopping on a motorcycle or moped without a helmet, valid licence, or the appropriate cover
  • Breaking laws in the country of travel

Alcohol and travel insurance: The catch Aussies need to know about

Most policies include alcohol exclusions, but you’ll need to read the fine print to find out how much is too much when it comes to alcohol and travel insurance..

Avatar

In this guide

Do any insurers cover alcohol-related claims?

Compare your travel insurance quotes, how does an insurer know if you were under the influence, methanol poisoning and travel insurance, how does travel insurance work when it comes to drug use, booze bust: why alcohol and travel insurance don't mix.

Destinations

While letting your hair down on holidays and having a drink is common, most travel insurance policies have an exclusion along the lines of:

We will not pay for claims arising directly or indirectly from any conduct engaged in by you whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs, unless prescribed by a doctor and taken in accordance with the doctor’s advice.

All travel insurance policies include a general exclusion that rejects claims if alcohol was the root cause of the incident. The reasons for this are two-fold: to encourage you to be mindful of how much you're drinking, and to limit the risk for the insurer.

The question of whether you're covered for drinking alcohol really comes down to how each insurance brand interprets its own exclusions.

Unless you're drug-tested or breathalysed, an insurer can't know for certain how much you had to drink.

Generally, it comes down to whether alcohol contributed or caused the incident, rather than simply whether alcohol was involved.

Some use the yardstick that applies to all aspects of insurance: "Was the incident unexpected?" This simply means: would a reasonable person expect their actions, in this case drinking too much, to lead to an incident that could have a negative outcome such as a claimable event e.g getting injured? If the answer if yes, then the incident was not unexpected and you wouldn't be covered.

Some insurer-specific examples

The following examples show how three separate insurance brands deal with claims involving alcohol:

  • Southern Cross Travel Insurance. Some insurers won't cover you if the alcohol involves you putting yourself in danger. For exampSCTI says it won't cover you if you put yourself in danger , which includes "you being under the influence of alcohol, solvents, or drugs — including your conduct while under their influence".
  • Cover-More. Some insurers mention blood alcohol limits. Cover-More says it won't cover claims "involving, arising from or related to your impairment due to you drinking too much alcohol: which is evidenced by the results of a blood test which show that your blood alcohol concentration level is 0.19% or above ." This is 4 times aboves the legal driving limit. It can also refuse alcohol-related claims based on a medical practitioner's report, third party witness or other documented piece of evidence.
  • Fast Cover Some insurers don't leave much room for interpretation. Fast cover says it won't cover you "If you were under the influence of drugs or alcohol." It doesn't outline how it can make this determination.

Insurers tend to look at methanol related claims on a case-by-case basis. However, most travel insurance policies contain a blanket drugs and alcohol exclusion and it is up to the individual insurer to interpret this.

What is methanol poisoning?

Methanol poisoning occurs when someone consumes homemade alcohol containing methanol, a pure form of alcohol similar to ethanol. Not normally present in commercially produced spirits, methanol is converted by the body into a toxin called formic acid. This can build up in the blood and cause kidney failure, heart problems, liver damage, blindness, nerve and brain damage and ultimately death.

Where can methanol poisoning happen?

Methanol poisoning can happen anywhere, but travellers to South Eastasian holiday destinations such as Bali and Thailand are considered most at risk. This is due to widespread home brewing of spirits and substitution of drinks by disreputable bar owners. Authorities warn that the best way to guard against methanol poisoning is to be wary of offers of free or discounted drinks and not to drink anything unless it comes from a sealed bottle or can.

How is methanol poisoning treated?

If you suspect that you've unknowingly drank methanol, you'll need to seek medical assistance as soon as possible. Medical professionals usually administer ethanol or fomepizole, both of which will prevent formic acid building up in the body.

Insurers won't pay out for any claim related to drug use unless your drugs were prescribed by a medical professional.

An example . If you smoked marijuana in Thailand, hopped behind the wheel of your hire car and were then involved in an accident, your travel insurer would not provide any cover for your medical expenses, legal liability or rental vehicle insurance excess costs.

The drug use exclusion can even apply to people who aren't travelling with you. If you are forced to cut your trip short and return home following the serious illness or death of a relative as a result of drug use, your insurer may not provide any cover for cancellation or curtailment costs.

Enjoying a drink is a normal part of any vacation. However, if you want to be covered by your travel insurance, you should understand the fine print in your policy.

There are many things to look out for when choosing a travel insurance provider and although it may appear that some policies are extremely similar, quality cover is more than just high policy limits. You will soon discover that we can cover what many others don't—including medical costs for injuries resulting from terrorism attacks, civil unrest, strikes, natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, redundancy, working holidays, and emergency dental.
  • Most importantly, you will have access to our 24-hour emergency assistance team so help is just a phone call away 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.

Please read the  Policy Wording  for full details of the cover provided.

Travel Insurance That Covers Alcohol-Related Accidents

Find out what you can be covered for under your travel insurance by comparing offers here.

Fact checked

Compare Travel Insurance Quotes in 30 Seconds

  • 100% free to use. No obligation.

In most cases, being on holiday overseas or interstate is the perfect time to let your hair down and enjoy a couple of drinks, whether it’s a glass of wine or two over dinner or cocktails by the resort’s pool. However, it’s important to know what you can and can’t be covered for when it comes to alcohol-related accidents away from home.

Fortunately, comparing travel insurance policies is made simpler with Savvy. You can take the guesswork out of locking in the most suitable insurance for your situation by completing the comparison process with us and considering offers from some of Australia’s top insurers right here. Find out whether you can be covered for alcohol-related incidents here.

Does travel insurance cover alcohol-related accidents?

In most cases, no – travel insurance companies will generally enforce a blanket exclusion to incidents being claimed for which are caused by alcohol. This means that if you’re heavily intoxicated, stumble and break your arm whilst on a trip in Azerbaijan to visit family, your travel insurance company likely won’t approve your claim and cover your medical costs. The same applies if you’re away at Schoolies and lose your phone and wallet after a night of partying.

Not every insurer will enforce these rules in the same way, though, meaning you may find that some can afford more lenience if you consume alcohol before your accident. For this reason, it’s highly valuable to familiarise yourself with different policies and Product Disclosure Statements (PDS) so you can avoid any rude surprises if you go to make a claim.

Does this mean I won’t be able to make a travel insurance claim if I consumed alcohol before an accident?

No – while the alcohol exclusion still applies, it’s important to know that it isn’t necessarily a case of black and white when it comes to alcohol-related incidents. Providers will assess incidents and claims on a case-by-case basis, meaning that if you were deemed to have taken sufficient care and that your insurer determines that your alcohol consumption was immaterial to your injury, your claim may be accepted. As such, the blanket alcohol exclusion isn’t as definitive as it might seem.

Different companies will have different approaches when it comes to covering alcohol-related incidents under travel insurance policies , so whether you’re covered will largely depend on who you choose to purchase insurance with. For example, while some providers may determine whether an event is expected or unexpected from a person in an inebriated state, others will look more closely at whether the incident would have occurred at all had you consumed alcohol and the extent to which it contributed to the incident.

You may find that, in some cases, your claim is neither denied nor fully accepted. If alcohol is deemed to have played a role in your incident, you may instead only be partially covered by your insurer, meaning you’d be required to pay a more significant portion out of pocket beyond your excess alone. As such, the travel insurance comparison process is crucial, particularly regarding areas of coverage, which you can complete right here with Savvy to help find the best travel insurance for your needs.

What can I be covered for under my travel insurance policy?

While you may not be covered for an alcohol-related incident under your insurance policy, it’s important to know what it can cover you for . These areas will be covered by standard comprehensive travel insurance policies:

  • Overseas medical cover: if you’re injured or fall ill without any influence of alcohol, you can be covered for the expenses incurred by treatment in a medical facility abroad. This cover is offered without limit, meaning there won’t be a cap on the amount you can claim for as long as you pay the required excess.
  • Overseas emergency transportation and evacuation: being transported to the hospital is an often-essential step in the treatment process, but this doesn’t mean it’s cheap. This can range from an ambulance to a helicopter and also includes cover for evacuation from remote areas . If your condition is serious, your policy can also cover your evacuation and repatriation to Australia.
  • Loss or theft of, or damage to, personal items: should you misplace a valuable personal effect, have it stolen or damaged whilst on holiday, you can generally be reimbursed up to a set limit (depending on the item) to have it fixed or replaced. However, alcohol could spell the end of your chances to claim.
  • Cancellations: life doesn’t always go according to plan, so if you’re required to cancel part or all of your trip, you can be covered for any cancellation fees charged or refunds not granted by your travel insurance policy. Being injured or falling ill as a result of alcohol consumption before your trip won’t be covered, however.
  • Personal liability: while you can be covered for up to $5 million for any legal trouble you may find yourself in if you’re considered liable for injury to another person or damage to their property, being under the influence will likely result in your cover being limited or voided.
  • Hire car excess: hire car excess protection isn’t always automatically included in your policy, as you may have to pay extra to include it, but can offer between $5,000 and $10,000 worth of cover.

More questions about travel insurance and alcohol-related accidents

They can – however, it’ll depend on the insurer and the situation. For example, if a family member is hospitalised suffering from alcohol poisoning while you’re on holiday in Africa and you decide to return home early, not all insurers will cover the cost of cancelling your trip. That’s why it’s crucial to read through the PDS before you purchase your policy, as you’ll want to be as clear as possible on what is and isn’t covered.

Again, this will depend on the incident being claimed for and the extent to which your alcohol consumption affected you. If your drink is spiked and you require medical treatment, showing to your insurer that a crime committed against you caused the event, rather than just drinking too much, will maximise your chances of having your claim signed off on. This may involve supplying police reports or blood or urine samples proving that you were spiked. In any event, though, it’s crucial to always take care to avoid spiking, such as not leaving your drink unattended and buying your own.

Yes – in the same way that alcohol exclusions apply, drug use will also void most claims in which it’s a factor. The exception to this exclusion is if the drugs consumed were prescribed to you by a medical professional.

Not always – whether you’re breathalysed or have to take a test to determine your blood alcohol reading will depend on the nature of the incident you’ve experienced and where you are in the world. For example, if you’re involved in a car accident, you’re more likely to be breathalysed than if you tripped climbing the stairs at your hotel and sprained your wrist.

Cheapest travel insurance comparison

Travel Insured

How much does the cheapest travel insurance cost?

The cheapest travel insurance in our rating is $334. This is for a WorldTrips Atlas Journey Preferred travel insurance plan, based on the average of seven quotes for travelers of various ages to international destinations with a range of trip values.

Factors that determine travel insurance cost

There are several factors that determine the cost of travel insurance, including:

  • Age and number of travelers being insured.
  • Trip length.
  • Total trip cost.
  • The travel insurance plan you choose.
  • The travel insurance company.
  • Any add-ons, features or upgraded benefits you include in the travel insurance plan.
Expert tip: “In general, travelers can expect to pay anywhere from 4% to 10% of their total prepaid, non-refundable trip costs,” said Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip.

Is buying the cheapest travel insurance a good idea?

Choosing cheaper travel insurance without paying attention to what a plan covers and excludes could leave you underinsured for your trip. Comparing travel insurance plans side-by-side can help ensure you get enough coverage to protect yourself financially in an emergency for the best price.

For example, compare these two Travelex travel insurance plans:

  • Travel Basic is cheaper but it only provides up to $15,000 for emergency medical expense coverage. You’ll also have to pay extra for coverage for children.
  • Travel Select will cost you a bit more but it covers up to $50,000 in medical expenses and includes coverage for kids aged 17 and younger traveling with you. It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.

Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance

Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage.

  • Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
  • Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan.
  • Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.

How to find the cheapest travel insurance

The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.

“Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.

Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.

  • How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days.
  • Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
  • The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.

Is cheap travel insurance worth it?

Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.

“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.

Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover.

“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).

A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.

Methodology

Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance . From those top-scoring travel insurance plans, we chose the most affordable for our rating of the cheapest travel insurance.

Insurers could score up to 100 points based on the following factors:

  • Cost: 40 points. We scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for a variety of trips and traveler profiles.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Medical evacuation: 10 points. We scored each plan’s emergency medical evacuation coverage by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver: 10 points. We gave full points to travel insurance policies that cover pre-existing medical conditions if certain conditions are met.
  • Missed connection: 10 points. Travel insurance plans with missed connection benefits of $1,000 per person or more received full points.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade: 5 points. We gave points to travel insurance plans with optional “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses up to 75%.
  • Travel delay required waiting time: 5 points. We gave 5 points to travel insurance policies with travel delay benefits that kick in after a delay of 6 hours or less.
  • Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
  • Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.

Some travel insurance companies may offer plans with additional benefits or lower prices than the plans that scored the highest, so make sure to compare travel insurance quotes to see your full range of options.

Cheapest travel insurance FAQs

When buying travel insurance, cheapest is not always the best. The most affordable travel insurance plans typically offer fewer coverages with lower policy limits and few or no optional upgrades. Add up your total nonrefundable trip costs and compare travel insurance plans and available features that cover your travel expenses. This strategy can help you find the cheapest travel insurance policy that best protects you from financial loss if an unforeseen circumstance arises.

Get the coverage you need: Best travel insurance of 2024

According to our analysis, WorldTrips , Travel Insured International and Travelex offer the best cheap travel insurance. Policy coverage types and limits can vary by each travel insurance provider, so the best way to get the cheapest travel insurance plan is to compare several policies and companies to find the right fit for your budget.

A good rate for travel insurance depends on your budget and coverage needs. The most comprehensive travel insurance plan is usually not the cheapest. But cheap trip insurance may not have enough coverage or the types of coverage you want. Comparing different levels of coverage and how much they cost can help you find the best cheap insurance for travel.

The average cost of travel insurance is between 5% to 6% of your total travel expenses for one trip, according to our analysis of rates. However, you may find cheaper travel insurance if you opt for a plan with fewer benefits or lower coverage limits. How much you pay for travel insurance will also depend on the number of travelers covered, their ages, the length of the trip and any upgrades you add to your plan.

Travel insurance covers nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs — up to the policy coverage limits — when your trip is interrupted or canceled for a covered reason outlined in your plan documents. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies usually provide coverage for:

  • Medical emergencies.
  • Trip delays.
  • Trip interruption.
  • Trip cancellation.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.

However, if you’re looking to save on travel insurance, you can shop for a policy that only has travel medical insurance and does not include benefits for trip cancellation .

Even when you buy cheap travel insurance, you can often use upgrade options to customize your policy to meet your specific needs.

Some common travel insurance add-ons you may want to consider include:

  • Rental car damage coverage.
  • Medical bundle.
  • Security bundle.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
  • Adventure sports bundle.
  • Pet bundle.
  • Wedding bundle.
  • “Cancel for work reasons” coverage.
  • “Interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage.
  • “Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage .

Our Cover-More travel insurance plans can include coverage related to the health of other people in your life who may impact your travel plans. We understand unfortunately things can happen that may mean you have to cancel your trip or return home early.

Our additional expenses benefit can provide cover for claims for travel costs arising from the sudden disabling injury, sickness or disease or death of a relative or your business partner who is not travelling, so long as it meets the criteria outlined in our PDS.

Our Cancellation Extensions upgrade – available on our Comprehensive+ and Comprehensive Plans – can also provide cover if a non-travelling relative or your business partner becomes ill, injured or dies.

Please note: “relative” means a person who is your spouse, de facto, parent, parent-in-law, stepparent, guardian, grandparent, child, foster child, grandchild, brother, brother-in-law, half-brother, stepbrother, sister, sister-in-law, half-sister, stepsister, daughter, daughter-in-law, stepdaughter, son, son-in-law, stepson, fiancé, fiancée, uncle, aunt, niece, or nephew.

Limits, sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions apply. Please read the  Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for full details on what is and isn’t covered before deciding if our travel insurance is right for you.
