Reviewing the 2022 StarCraft Super Lite Maxx 16FBS

T he Super Lite Maxx lineup from StarCraft consists of four floorplans – each for under 25-foot trailers that were designed with couples in mind. The newest, the 2022 16FBS, is also the smallest. This model release is in keeping with the current “let’s just get out there” trend. Almost two years into the pandemic, and the enforced isolation has brought many younger people into the world of RVs. This new group of RVers bring a slightly different set of wants to their RV purchase, including features for electronics and convenience.

The RV builders have lost no time in responding to this new market with products to fill this need. Another important factor for many of these first time RVers is a target weight of around 5,000 lb. This is the sweet spot in the automotive towing market; meaning that many folks can tow with the SUV they already own.

Most first-time buyers focus on what is inside a trailer. That is fine, but the outside is what carries and protects the inside, so you should pay attention to how the unit is built too. That said, let’s look at the Super Lite Maxx from the outside in.

The Outside

StarCraft’s Super Lite Maxx starts with a welded aluminum frame that carries a wall product called TuffShell. This is a vacuum bonded, laminated and reinforced fibreglass product. This type of construction contains no wood (as in no chance of rot) and the insulation is fixed (it won’t sag and fall over time inside the walls).

The exterior has very few seams. Few seams equal less possibility of rain leaks. On top is a PVC roof membrane that carries a limited lifetime warranty. This roof is also walkable and there is a rear access ladder that is used with the roof mounted accessory rack. The ladder is meant for maintenance access – not a roof top party. Remember that caulking around vents, HVAC units and antennas is a must and should be checked every year for wear and cracking. As part of a convenience package, the underbelly of the trailer is enclosed, insulated and heated. This feature extends the camping season into the colder months when tanks might freeze up. To make sure ice does not form, 12-V heat pads are also available.

This single axle trailer rides on a rubber torsion axle and has ground clearance adjustments. This will get you into some rougher terrain campsites. To that end, there are also impact resistant, galvanized steel wheel wells – as you’ll be on gravel more often.

The outside also features a standard gas grill hookup, marine grade speakers, a power awning, solid swing down entry steps, tinted safety-glass windows and wired prep for Wi-Fi, TV and solar panels.

StarCraft’s Super Lite Maxx comes with a single slide out that opens the centre of the trailer making more room for the jack knife sofa it houses and the galley directly opposite.

This floorplan also includes a rear corner bathroom that allows for a larger corner radius shower. The nose, which is curved, houses the 80-inch queen-bed. Basic, simple, space efficient layout – however the features and décor set it apart. Throughout the unit, the flooring is a quality residential vinyl. The galley features a two-burner recessed range with a flush mount glass cover. Above it is the convection microwave and rangehood. The countertop is seamless, and the single sink is an under-mount stainless steel model. The hardware cabinetry is screwed and glued – not stapled.

The couch in the slide also does duty as the eating area. A long oval table is set up in front of it for meals – then it stores away afterwards. Across from the couch is a built-in wall unit that houses the TV and a series of drawers. The refrigerator is mounted on the rear wall next to the bathroom door. A nice design feature is the twin door pantry space immediately beside the fridge.

The inside colour scheme has dark touches but tends to use lighter colours to create a smaller space feeling airy.

I mentioned earlier that many of this units’ potential buyers are concerned about connectivity. StarCraft includes wiring prep for both satellite and cable TV. In the master bedroom, electrical outlets and USB ports allow for easy overnight charging. On the roof, a standard dome style TV antenna is also prepped to except a Wi-Fi receiver. With all these ways to stay connected, many first timers will surely feel they have the best of home while out camping.
