Sergei Ponomarenko, the Man who Slipped Through Time

In science fiction, time travel is a common occurrence. In reality, not so much: there are a slew of logical, observational and practical reasons why we strongly believe time travel to be an impossibility.

This is not 100% true, however. What is amazing is that outside the typical perceptions of time, traveling forward into the future by several milliseconds has been proven possible within the frameworks of special relativity (the relationship between space and time ) and general relativity (Einstein’s theory of gravity).

But, unless you can retrofit a DMC DeLorean with a flux capacitor like Doc Brown did in the film Back to the Future , we won’t be going anywhere.

But then there was Sergei Ponomarenko, a Ukrainian time traveler who was whisked away from 1958 Kyiv and dropped off in 2006 Kyiv in 2006 in a single moment. This story may seem crazy, but when we look at the photographic proof and time-stamped videos of Sergei Ponomarekno from 2006 questions arise.

Did Sergei Ponomarneko travel into the future? And how?

Sergei Ponomarenko

On April 23, 2006, a man in his late 20s to early 30s was arrested by the police for suspicious behavior. The young man was incredibly confused and kept asking what year it was.

The man said his name was Sergei Ponomarenko and, until two minutes ago, was living in the year 1958. The police asked for the man’s identification, and when Sergei Ponomarenko handed over his credentials, the officers were caught off guard.

long time traveller wiki

The ID Sergei produced was the national ID cards citizens were given during the Soviet Union . Ukraine gained independence when the Soviet Union disbanded in 1991, and the ID was at least 15 years old.

The officers looked up from the ID and noticed that the man in front of them, Sergei Ponomarenko matched the photo on the ID card. Upon further observation, the police noticed Sergei dressed differently than everyone else.

Instead of modern clothing, Sergei Ponomarenko was wearing what would be described as “vintage” clothing from the 1950s and had an antiquated film camera around his neck. The police were convinced Sergei Ponomarenko was insane and needed medical intervention.

The police dropped Sergei Ponomarenko off at a psychiatric clinic in Kyiv, where Dr. Pablo Kutrikov saw him for examination. Dr. Kutrtikov recorded the session, which took place on April 23, 2006.

In the video, Sergei Ponomarenko said that his name was Sergei Valentinovich Ponomarenko and that he was born in Kyiv on June 16, 1932. The man in front of Dr. Kurtikov was not a 74-year-old man. He looked around 30 years old.

When asked his age, Sergei only confirmed this, saying that he was 25 years old. Sergei Ponomarenko told the doctor that the last thing he remembered was that he was taking a walk in Kyiv with his fiance, Valentina Curish, and the two took a picture with Sergei’s camera. Just after this, Sergei spotted something strange in the sky.

long time traveller wiki

Sergei described the strange object as bell-shaped and was “flying in a strange way.” He told the doctor that he thought he would be able to get a better look at the object if he took a picture of it, and suddenly Sergei found himself in 2006.

This would be easily dismissed as a rambling fantasy, but of course Sergei claimed he had proof. To determine if Sergei Ponomarenko was suffering from delusions or to convince the man that he did not time travel after taking a picture of a UFO, Dr. Kutrikov had the photos developed.

Sergei had a vintage camera, and the film could not be developed using 21st-century techniques. An expert in photography was called in to develop the film.

When the photography expert received the film, he was shocked when he realized that the film was old. That specific type of film went out of production in the 1970s but was in perfect condition. The photos taken by Sergei Ponomarenko were able to be developed.

There were photographs of Kyiv from the 1950s, an image of a woman about the same age as Sergei Ponomarenko, and a photo of Sergei wearing the same outfit he wore in the interview with Dr. Kutrikov. But the most impressive picture was a bell-shaped UFO in the sky, just as Sergei had described.

This was enough to warrant further investigation, and on April 25, 2006, Sergei Ponomarenko sat again in a recorded interview with Dr. Kutrikov. The doctor presented Sergei with the images. Sergei basically said, “yeah, I told you so,” and was recorded saying, “I so far do not understand what this object [UFO] is and how something like that happened to me at the same moment when I took the picture, and I went down to look at the camera and somehow ended up in this year.”

When the two men finished speaking, Sergei was seen on the security camera entering his room at the clinic and was never seen again . Sergei Ponomarenko is never captured exiting the room, and bars on the windows made escape impossible.

Now the police had a missing person to find. The police investigated old ID records from the Soviet Union and verified that there was a man named Sergei Valentinovich Ponomarekno from Kyiv. However, the reports indicated that this Sergei Ponomarenko was officially declared missing in 1960.

The police had a picture of Sergei’s fiancée, Valentina Chrish, and went to see if she knew what was happening or where the man went. They found Valentina, an elderly woman in her 70s, and she told them that her fiancé Sergei Ponomarenko had indeed disappeared for a few days back in 1958.

But Sergei had returned.

History [ ]

Early life [ ].

As a young man, The Time Traveler, who at the time called himself " Moses ", was a disorganized scientist, whose interests had him following optics. He was approached by a man named Gottfried Plattner , who offered him a mysterious substance called Plattnerite . With this material, he was able to start looking into the construction of a working Time Machine. (" The Time Ships ")

According to another account, the substance was found in a meteorite, which the Time Traveler purchased from a farmer. (" The Wee Time Traveler ")

He was one of the most well-known scientists in England, as of 1893. He owned a Horseless Carriage , and had set a speed record of just over 17 miles per hour. His apprentice was A. Fitzgibbon , of whom he had legal guardianship after the death of her parents. (" The Space Machine ")

He had also invented a number of other machines, powered by the same crystaline substance. He had a failed Flying Machine , which would fly by flapping its wings like a bird, as well as a mechanical bicycle, which was a success but which he'd chosen not to release to the public. (" The Space Machine ")

Invention of the Time Machine [ ]

The Time Traveler was able to assemble a complex machine using the plattnerite. Upon its completion, he arranged a get-together with some of his friends to discuss the invention the following evening. However, before that time, he tested the machine, taking it all the way forward into the year 802,701 AD. (" The Time Machine ")

Morlocks & Eloi [ ]

Dalmation Eloi

Some Eloi with the Time Traveler, in one of their domes.

In that year, he explored the future world that at first seemed paradisaical to him. He soon encountered the playful Eloi , a humanoid species descended from modern-day man. He imagined them to be quiet masters of the world, having perfected technology so that they needn't do any work. However, he soon discovered that his Time Machine had gone missing, and the Eloi seemed ignorant. After further exploration, he soon encountered the Morlocks , subterranean nocturnal creatures, also descended from humans, who fed, dressed, and later ate the Eloi. The Time Traveler befriended Weena , an eloi girl who accompanied him on many of his explorations across the world. Unfortunately, in the end, he was unable to protect her from the Morlocks, who made off with her in the forest. Finally, the Time Traveler discovered his machine, which the Morlocks were using as bait to get him into the Morlock Sphinx . The Time Traveler took the bait, knowing he could dematerialize the machine by traveling in time. Although the Morlocks ambushed him as he boarded the machine, he was able to fight them off and travel into the future. (" The Time Machine ")

Far Future [ ]

Beach Bulls Eye

The Time Traveler stands on the beach in the far future.

He proceeded further into the future, seeing new animal forms, such as hairy, grey mammals which he theorized might have been descendants of the Eloi. These creatures were preyed on by a gigantic centipede-like creature. (" The Grey Man ")

In another era, he saw a race of red crab-like creatures pursuing giant mammalian butterflies . Finally, he witnessed one side of the Earth come to face the sun, with no more day and night cycle. As the Earth's atmosphere thinned, The Time Traveler could go no further and decided to return to his own time, where he recounted his adventures to his friends at the dinner party. Shortly thereafter, he decided to return to the future to find and rescue Weena; he was never seen again by his friends. (" The Time Machine ")

Morlocks of the Sphere [ ]

When the Time Traveler boarded the Time Machine again, this time more prepared, having brought along matches and supplies and tools, he discovered that something had changed. As he traveled through time, he saw the sun go dark long before the world of the Eloi and the Morlocks. Stopping at an earlier era, he investigated the year 657,209 . There, the sun was dark and the Earth was kept warm by heat eminating from a series of vents that resembled the Morlock Wells he'd seen in his previous voyage to futurity. He was soon surrounded by several Morlocks, and bashed one of them in the head, causing severe injury. He was then subdued and taken into custody aboard a massive Morlock Sphere surrounding the sun, which was the new primary habitat for Humanity. There, he was questioned by one Morlock who identified himself as Nebogipfel . Nebogipfel soon made it clear that the Morlocks of this era were a civilized species who certainly didn't make a habit of cannibalism. Nebogipfel gave the Time Traveler a tour of the future world, after which The Time Traveler decided he could never live in this future and attempted escape. With Nebogipfel, he returned to Earth, where he jumped onto the Time Machine and escaped. Nebogipfel, who tried to stop him, fell onto the machine in the struggle and was taken, too. He thus reluctantly became the Time Traveler's new companion. (" The Time Ships ")

Return to the Past [ ]

The two returned to the 19th century, though slightly earlier than the Time Traveler's time. There, they met a younger version of the Time Traveler, who used the name Moses . Soon after their meeting, a Time Tank appeared from the future and abducted the three time travelers. They were all taken to a future in which World War I had never ended and was becoming a perpetual war, devastating every country in the world. London was covered by a massive, bomb-proof dome. However, the three time travelers planned their escape from this dark era. Finally, they found a prototype Time Car and stole it. Moses didn't survive, however, having been mortally wounded in an attack on the city. He didn't make it to the time car. The two travelers then went much farther into the past. (" The Time Ships ")

Prehistoric Times [ ]

They then went back in time to far before the rise of Humans. There, they met the inhabitants of a crashed Time Tank from the era they'd just come from. The vehicle was unusable, and everyone was trapped in this era. They all formed a new colony of Humans, with Nebogipfel teaching science to accelerate the colony's development. Finally, he was able to repair the Time Car, using components from both wrecked time machines. He and the Time Traveler finally left that era, after the Time Traveler made one last contribution - by having sex with one of the women in the colony, he added to the tiny gene pool. Then, they traveled forward in time to see what had become of the human colony they'd planted far in the past. (" The Time Ships ")

A Changed Home [ ]

The Time Traveler decided to return to his home era, the 1890s, to see what it would look like in this alternate reality created by the colony they'd planted in the past. However, as they approached, the atmosphere became cold and unlivable. The Time Traveler died, as did Nebogipfel, before the Time Machine stopped. There, a race of highly advanced machines called the Universal Constructors had repaired the damage to the Time Traveler and Nebogipfel, cell by cell. They accommodated the two, who soon learned that the Universal Constructors are made of nanobots, all cooperating with one another. They planned to build a fleet of time ships to explore beyond the local set of realities. They invited the Time Traveler aboard the fleet due to his historical significance. To survive the journey, both men had to be converted into Universal Constructors. Then, the ships traveled back through time, beyond the beginning of the univers, to find another universe- an infinite one. In that universe, they were able to form a sentience that filled that entire universe. The Time Traveler and Nebogipfel were witness to this, before the sentient universe returned him to his own timeline. (" The Time Ships ")

Return and Weena's Rescue [ ]

There, he met himself in the past, and, calling himself Gottfried Plattner, gave his younger self the Plattnerite, thus causing a time loop in his history. He then decided not to return to his own age and instead went forward to 802,701 to complete his original mission. There, he rescued Weena and went about teaching the Eloi to build a new civilization. He finally got up the courage to descend into the Morlock tunnels to try and help them, as well. No account exists of his return. (" The Time Ships ")

An alternate account of these events has him stopping first in the 33rd Century to upgrade his time machine into a Time Ship that can fly through the air. Using this machine, he appeared at the exact right moment after the blaze, hovering over the scene, and recovering Weena at precisely the right moment, before taking her back to live in the 33rd century. (" Beyond the Time Machine ")

In another alternate account of Weena's rescue, the Time Traveler arrives after stopping in the 40th Century for supplies. He arrives slightly early, and his arrival attracts Weena's attention, who was sleeping alongside the Time Traveler but sensed the other Time Traveler's presence telepathically. After exploring the landscape further, Weena allowed the Star in the Dusk , a library computer, to download itself into her brain. After this was done, the two settled down in the 40th Century, hoping to create a new timeline in which humanity never degrades into Eloi and Morlock. (" The Time Machine: A Sequel ")

The Time Traveler, now going by the name of Denton Morris, had five children with Weena: two sons, and three daughters, Narra Morris , Tala Morris , and Belinda Morris . They began raising the children in 33rd century Lonn , where the half-Eloi children suffered from discrimination. This lead to Tala's suicide and Narra extensively partook in Geneing and in 20th century drugs, leading to serious health issues. The two sons also went missing. (" Beyond the Time Machine ")

An infamous Ukrainian time-traveller story has finally been explained

An infamous Ukrainian time-traveller story has finally been explained

If there’s one thing we like on indy100 , it’s a good time traveller story.

There’s been an influx of people on TikTok claiming to be from the future over recent times, but nothing will come close to the story of Sergei Ponomarenko for sheer weirdness.

In one of the most infamous cases of its kind, the story centers around a man who turned up in Kyiv, Ukraine back in 2006 claiming to be from years in the past.

He told authorities that he was born in 1932. He looked the part, carrying an old-fashioned camera and a dated outfit.

Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter

The most compelling thing was that he held a Soviet document from the 1950s, which he claimed showed he was the age of 25.

@bethany.gets.weird Time Traveler Sergei Ponomarenko #timetravel #ufo #conspiracy #unexplained

Ponomarenko then proceeded to show people pictures that he claimed he’d taken on his camera in Kyiv. After they’d been developed, authorities found that the images did indeed show Kyiv in the 50s, and they also showed him with an unnamed woman – as well as an image that Ponomarenko claimed showed a UFO.

The bizarre story took another turn when authorities looked back into the records and found a man by the same name who went missing in 1958. Strangely, they tracked down the man’s girlfriend who by that time was in her 70s. It turns out that the girlfriend was the woman in the photographs.

She then told authorities that Ponomarenko had disappeared for two years and then reappeared in the 50s. Not only that, but she then received a photograph showing him as an older man, with the picture purporting to have been taken in Kyiv in 2050.

long time traveller wiki

It’s all kinds of weird, but the mystery might finally have been solved all these years later.

YouTuber Joe Scott has delved back into the case, and come up with an explanation that might put the whole incident to bed.

As Joe finds, the picture of Ponomarenko purportedly from 2050 Kyiv has been “cloned” and possibly includes the Empire State Building.

More compellingly, Joe also found that the photos were taken from the Ukrainian TV show Aliens . The show discusses the possibility of extraterrestrial life and is similar to the type of show you would see on The History Channel but according to Scott has a number of inaccuracies.

It was fun while it lasted, but it looks like the ‘time traveller’ has been busted.

The harmony carries the singer on a journey. Laying down our bodies is symbolic of laying down our worries and being carried. Love this song.

The Traveler is the playable protagonist of Genshin Impact . In the opening cutscene, twin siblings from another world travel through the universe, until an unknown god blocks their path. The player gets to choose either Aether (male) or Lumine (female) as the traveler and Traveler's Sibling gets captured. Their power to travel is sealed, leaving them stranded on Teyvat . They save Paimon by fishing her out of the water and she accompanies them as their new travel companion. Together they set out on a journey to find The Seven and reunite with the Traveler's lost sibling.

Although players can choose the name they want to be referred by, the Traveler's Sibling refers to the Traveler by their real name, regardless of their custom name.

Elemental Alignment

At the beginning of the game and in The Crux Clash during Autumn Winds, Scarlet Leaves , the Traveler is "unaligned," a special elemental relation exclusive to them. When unaligned, the color of the Traveler's "vision" and background when the Traveler is selected in the Character Menu is gray. Although the Traveler's Profile lists their Constellation properly as Viator/Viatrix, attempting to open the Constellations tab will show a blank screen with "Constellation Unavailable" in the bottom-right corner. When unaligned, the Traveler has only one talent, Past Memories , their Normal/Charged Attack.

When unaligned, screens that show character cards with their elements show a gray "no" symbol (🚫︎) in the place of the element symbol.

Shortly afterward they will unlock their Anemo talents and Constellations by resonating with the first Statue of The Seven in Mondstadt . The Traveler can resonate with any other Statue of The Seven they find and change their element to match the statue's element. See Teyvat for each region's element.

Note: The Traveler's Normal Attack Talents all use the same animations, regardless of what element the Traveler is aligned with.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the U.S.? See the paths for the 2044 and 2045 events

By Cara Tabachnick

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 2:31 AM EDT / CBS News

Eclipse-watchers waited more than six years since the last time a total solar eclipse charted its way across the United States,  in 2017 . After the  April 8 event , prepare to wait a lot longer — the next chance won't be coming around any time soon.

Viewers in what's called " the path of totality " saw the moon completely block the sun  — an opportunity those in North America won't have again for 20-plus years. The next total solar eclipses in North America are not anticipated until 2044 and 2045.

"A total solar eclipse is one of the most spectacular things anyone can see in their lifetime," Virginia Tech astrophysicist Nahum Arav told CBS News. The eclipse "looks like a black hole in the sky," said Arav, who watched the paths of totality of eclipses in 1991 and 2017.

The total eclipse of the sun. The rays of light appear as

Monday's eclipse started around 11:07 a.m. PDT on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, and then moved into Texas . The eclipse's visibility tracked  through 15 states  — Oklahoma, Illinois , Ohio,  Pennsylvania , New York , Vermont ,  New Hampshire  and Maine , among them — before heading northward into Canada and then exiting North America.

Even with spotty weather in some states, millions of people from coast to coast saw a partial solar eclipse, in which the moon partially covers the sun. However, only those within the path of totality experienced the darkness of the total solar eclipse.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the U.S. after the 2024 eclipse?

Solar eclipses happen about twice a year, said Arav. "Eclipses happen all over the Earth evenly," he told CBS News — but noted the timings when they occur are not regular. That means  eclipses can occur within just a few years, or every few decades, in North America.

Before the eclipse in 2017, the last total solar eclipse to cross North America was in 1979 . That was the first eclipse whose path of totality crossed the entire continent in 99 years.

Even though eclipses may seem to occur randomly, scientists can pinpoint exactly when and where they will happen.

"There is no ambiguity, as we know exactly where it will land," said Arav.

There will be eight total solar eclipses visible from North America in the 21st century, Arav said, with one occurring about every 12 years, on average.

The next total solar eclipse to cross North America is predicted to occur on Aug. 23, 2044 , NASA said. However, the path of totality from this eclipse will only touch three states, according to  The Planetary Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to public interest in space.

This next eclipse will mainly be observed in Canada, Arav said.

Path of totality for the 2044 total solar eclipse

The 2044 eclipse will start in Greenland on Aug. 23, 2044, and will continue its path through Canada.

The 2044 total solar eclipse will be short, mostly appearing in Canada. It will be visible from three states in the U.S.: Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

The path of totality will cross Williston and Dickinson, North Dakota, and Great Falls, Montana.

Map showing the path of the 2044 total solar eclipse from Greenland, Canada and parts of the United States.

Path of totality for the 2045 total solar eclipse

The next solar eclipse that crosses a significant portion of the continental U.S. will be in 2045, said Arav. That year, a solar eclipse will darken skies in parts of the U.S., Haiti, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana, Suriname and Brazil.

In North America, the 2045 total eclipse will be visible in many states as it moves from coast to coast. The eclipse will start in California and move east to end in Florida, similar to 2017, Arav said.

There will be numerous U.S. cities where eclipse watchers can view the total eclipse, including Reno, Nevada; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Orlando, Florida.

Future solar eclipses in North America after 2045

Scientists have predicted eight total solar eclipses will appear in North America in the 21st century.

"Natural phenomena are like a Swiss clock," Arav said. "We know exactly when and where they will appear."

After the 2044 and 2045 total solar eclipses, the next total eclipses in North America will occur in 2078 and 2099.

May 11, 2078

This total solar eclipse on May 11, 2078 , will pass over the southern United States.

Cities include:

Atlanta, Georgia

New Orleans, Louisiana

Charlotte, North Carolina

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Sept. 14, 2099

This total solar eclipse on Sept. 14, 2099 , will cross a wide swath of the United States.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Chicago, Illinois

Columbus, Ohio

Fargo, North Dakota

Traveller:Canon

Canon is shorthand for key concepts that keep Traveller and the OTU consistent. It is maintained by FFE , Marc Miller , and/or his designated appointees.

  • The canon OTU timeline is defined by Don's Hermeneutic (which see).
  • Official sector data is defined as that held by the Second Survey database. Travellermap.com has the most recently published version of this data.
  • Key Traveller concepts are clearly laid out by essays in the Traveller 5th edition core rules. These essays typically consolidate, clarify, or correct previous attempts to understand these key concepts.

Canon was never intended to rule and track all existing publications, and each referee runs Traveller by his own rules, always.

Definition [ edit ]

Canon is the idea that published material should be consistent with other published material . It is a collection of key concepts about Traveller that should typically be followed. This is a standard for publishers, authors, and artists who want to maintain compatibility with Traveller. Therefore, it is only important if you need to be consistent with the Traveller rules or the OTU .

  • Please also see Traveller RPG Wiki .

Management [ edit ]

The final rule on canon is Marc Miller .

Marc Miller follows the Traveller Ethos , and his vision of the game when determining whether something is canonical.

  • When trying to understand a Traveller idea or concept, MWM prefers the least rule-bound, least restraining option available under most conditions.
  • The Emperor will not be fenced in unless forced to do so.
  • Some things may only be found as Niikiik Luur at the Galidumlar Dadaga .
  • It's ok to try and make sense of publications in light of canon rules and the OTU . Be aware that publications may have conflicts and contradictions.

Background [ edit ]

Traveller from the beginning encouraged experimentation with bending its rules. It also cautioned against upsetting the balanced toolsets and gameplay. Traveller's quick popularity resulted in a multitude of published materials between uncoordinated publishers. And sure enough, untested rules were created that, when taken to their logical conclusions, upset the balance of the game. This drove a need to clarify the key concepts in Traveller.

Content creators are not bound by canon, although they are bound by license, and are encouraged to stay within the canon. The OTU (and Traveller in general) grows as new material is published. Some items initially come into existence as canon items and are later de-canonized. Some de-canonized items have later been re-canonized. Changes within the OTU should ideally be coordinated through FFE , Marc Miller , and/or his designated appointee/s.

Canon Specification [ edit ]

References use book abbreviations, a dot, and a page number. For example, T5B1.11 is Traveller5, Book 1, page 11. Items marked (OTU) are OTU- or Charted Space-specific. Items marked (F) are foundational concepts.

The item the speed of communication is limited to the speed of travel is the fundamental root of the entire game.

Important Terms and Concepts [ edit ]

Traveller uses certain words and abbreviations in a unique manner, and in order to be able to properly understand the Traveller rules, players and referees should acquire some familiarity with these terms. -- Traveller5 Book 3 page 284.

Also called "Library Data". Mentioned here are two of the most useful repositories of library data.

'Important Terms and Concepts', Traveller5 Book 3 page 284+. This is seven pages of short entries describing Traveller terms, including some for the OTU, curated by Marc Miller.

Compiled library data: https://traveller5.net/library-data/ . It is based on the excellent Imperial Encyclopedia from MegaTraveller. However, it also pulls in scattered but meaningful library data from the early CT adventures, JTAS, The Traveller Adventure, the CT Alien Modules, the Spinward Marches Campaign and so on. Its main goal is to consolidate classic Traveller library data so that a mad search through all one's collection is not necessary.

Traveller Timeline Canon Hermeneutic [ edit ]

Don's Hermeneutic is the priority-order system Don used when building his Integrated Timeline. Marc Miller approved of Don's approach, which in a nutshell was to treat the most current sources as definitive unless there's an obvious problem with it.

"Obvious problems" include upsetting the balance of gameplay (such as introducing jump torpedos), changing a fundamental (such as introducing an ansible ), or changing an established OTU concept (such as changing the Droyne into mercenary space orcs with laser eyes).

Don in 2015 [ edit ]

I'm not speaking for Marc here; I'm drawing from personal experience and observation to infer basic facts to assist. If I talk for Marc online, I'll preface the post with "Marc is asking..." or "Marc wants..." or something similar. Rob Eaglestone also does this. That doesn't mean Rob or I have any special status. If I were writing material for the Spinward Marches , I'd probably have Hans Rancke review it before giving it to Marc for review because I trust his knowledge of things I've forgotten.

Don's Hermeneutic for Constructing the Offical Traveller Universe Timeline [ edit ]

So, bearing all of that in mind, here are some simple facts about the Traveller canon:

  • It is, at any given moment, what Marc decides.
  • Marc reserves the right to change his mind.
  • The GURPS Traveller Universe ( GTU or Lorenverse ) and the Official Traveller Universe ( OTU ) overlap; exactly where they overlap is questionable, depending on who's asking the questions.
  • The precedent of "mostly recently published source" applies, unless that newer source is wrong about something; it happens.
  • Never, ever assume that current licensees are not canon; instead, they are always canon unless they print something wrong.
  • Marc decides who is wrong.
  • There's no order to the six rules above.

Primary Sources [ edit ]

On an average day of research for Marc, I'll start [searching primary sources chronologically] with:

  • MGT (if possible), then...
  • GT (including IW ), then...
  • TNE (because I have to, not because I want to), then...
  • MT , then...
  • CT materials.

The primary publisher is the first source within those materials, but any licensee could be a secondary source.

  • There are probably *golden* sources, but nothing is perfect.

Generalized Research Model [ edit ]

Within the entire literary corpus of Traveller , when you're looking for data on your own (i.e. not for Marc), then the order is:

  • Traveller5 , then...
  • Mongoose Traveller , then...
  • GURPS: Traveller , then...
  • TNE , then...
  • MegaTraveller , then finally...
  • 'Classic' Traveller .

As soon as you find what you're looking for, stop; you're done.

Secondary Sources [and Ideas That Marc Likes] [ edit ]

Oh, and yes, 1248 goes in there somewhere. I wouldn't consider it a primary source, but a secondary source. Heck, there's even a couple of Judges Guild items Marc mentions from time to time. Admittedly, I haven't dug much out of the JG / Group One / Paranoia Press materials for Marc, but I've got them to refer to. And even HIWG docs and fanzines COULD be a source if it's an idea that Marc likes. For example, I pay very close attention to HIWG docs written by Clay Bush on subjects. And I've got the TML and Xboat archives set up as searchable because they have clues to things I don't remember.

1. I cannot think of a single source that would be outright rejected with no consideration at all. 2. The Traveller Integrated Timeline isn't a source: it's a list of sources. 3. So, the moral is, don't throw rocks at other Traveller settings. We're all in the same tent, even if we imagine we're not.

Some things Marc has repeatedly said are NOT canon [ edit ]

  • Anything under 100 tons jumping. 101-ton jump ships work, but 99-ton jump anythings don't.
  • Almost all Aslan art has the hands and paws wrong. I've repeatedly had this explained to me, but I still don't picture it properly.
  • There are only six major races within Charted Space , and they are all identified. Don't add another one.
  • DGP 's pre- Ancient Primordials / Sparklers - including some of the material in Knightfall . Come on, Joe Fugate only briefly mentioned them in his goodbye.
  • Light sabres, a la Star Wars. This might be proof that Traveller and Star Wars have different physics foundations.
  • Simultaneous FTL communication is never possible. No combination of psionics , science , or magic can produce this in the OTU . There are no ansibles .

History of the use of the term 'canon' in Traveller [ edit ]

The first uses of the term 'canon' for Traveller were in the late 1980s; online, the first sighting is on June 1991 of the Traveller Mailing List, in a post by Hans Rancke. It was used to equate published material in general as canon , regardless of source. After that first sighting, the term began to be used in reference to rule systems, the OTU, tech levels, equipment.

By 1994, the term had entered general usage. It was used in three different ways:

  • It was used in discussions to correct (or bludgeon) a poster as if canon was binding on the referee and players.
  • It was used in the context of a particular rules system, e.g. Classic Traveller canon, or MegaTraveller canon, or TNE canon, or T4 canon.
  • It was also used in the current sense, as a "writers' Bible" to keep Traveller reasonably consistent.

Sector data was one of the earliest uses of canon arguments. Those arguments were resolved in 2006 when sector data was fixed.

Further evolution on the concept of canon is seen by 1996. This included discussions about how canon is defined, and what canon IS. The release of Traveller 4th edition contributed to this discussion.

I believe that the real reason why the Core subsector isn't 'according to canon' is because Marc Miller has his own view of 'canon' and it doesn't necessarily agree with everything that others (e.g. DGP) have published. Andy Lilly, 3 Oct 1996)

Don McKinney further refined what canon is, when he began his timeline project in October 1996. He was forced to rank material as he considered entries for inclusion.

History [ edit ]

Traveller has around 2,000 published products, with more coming out every year. Publishers have a vested, mutual interest in keeping consistent with one another. Canon for key issues benefits the game in the long run. However, canon for every issue is impossible.

Wiki Library Overview [ edit ]

Library entries derived from a canon source are listed below. Any library article not derived from a canon source is in the non-canon category. This includes work produced by other, licensed, Traveller publishers and fan-produced works. The categorization of an article as canon or not is usually irrelevant to gamers. Which articles are essential to your game should be your decision. Canon is important to authors writing for a publisher to ensure they are within the boundaries set by previous authors and approved by FFE .

Canon Classifications [ edit ]

CANON: One of the definitions of canon is: a sanctioned or accepted group or body of related works . Primary canon. Part of the OTU .

  • Canon items may be paraphrased or otherwise modified from their original form. The core content should not be modified, although you can add to it later. Lightly modified or edited is the order of the day. This can be highly subjective.
  • The Traveller canon includes books published by Game Designers' Workshop , Imperium Games , BITS , Steve Jackson Games , QuikLink Interactive , Avenger Enterprises , ComStar Games , Greylock Publishing , and Mongoose Publishing among others.
  • Ironically, not everything designated canon is included in the OTU . Most of it is, though.

DEUTEROCANON: A number of other publishers, including Seeker Gaming Systems , Gamelords , FASA , produced their material under license. This material is referred to as deuterocanonical or secondary canon.

  • These companies no longer produce for Traveller .
  • They may or may not be a part of the OTU .

APOCRYPHA: Some publishers' products, though approved for use with Traveller at one time, have been de-canonized and removed from the canon list: Judges Guild , Group One , and Paranoia Press . Tertiary canon.

  • Traveller canon excludes periodical articles published in Journal of the Travellers Aid Society , Challenge , and Travellers' Digest magazines, unless the articles have been re-published in another canon source or otherwise designated canon.
  • Some de-canonized items have later been re-canonized.
  • Apocryphal items may be mostly de-canonized yet retain some canon elements included in the OTU . As a rough rule of thumb, most apocryphal materials have been de-canonized and are not included in the OTU .

NON-CANON: Not officially part of the OTU .

  • Elements of it might still be unofficially included in the storyline or even later canonized.
  • Please also see Category:Non-canon .

Wiki Category Templates [ edit ]

The Traveller RPG Wiki uses a set of categories marked at the bottom of each article. These help to make articles more accessible and searchable. The Category Templates insert a standard set of categories for each page depending upon the intended use.

  • Each article in the Library namespace should use either the LE (canon) or the LEN (non-canon) template.
  • Each article in the Dictionary namespace should use either the DE (canon) or the DEN (non-canon) template.
  • Articles not in the OTU or in an ATU and are not officially "in story" should use LEA (non-canon) or MET templates.
  • Some articles may mix canon and non-canon data or otherwise mix categories. These are usually marked both LE and LEN, although other combinations are possible. Whenever possible, inline citations are used to designate canon and non-canon sections.

Category Templates [ edit ]

  • DE : Dictionary Entry Template, Canon
  • DEN : Non-Canon Dictionary Entry Template
  • Sometimes LEN articles will be redesignated an LEA article when it has strayed too far from the OTU .
  • This can be a subjective matter decided upon by the Traveller Wiki Editorial Team .
  • LE : Basic Library Entry Template, Canon
  • LEN : Non-Canon Library Entry Template
  • MET : Metastory: Articles about Traveller that are not "in-universe" and pertain to rules, authors, and such. May also include non-canon materials, although these are more typically organized under LEA.

Wiki Category Template Overview [ edit ]

Please note that some Traveller data may exist as both a dictionary entry and a library article. Other articles may mix canon, non-canon, and semi-canon elements.
