Whether you’re browsing airfares or simply armchair dreaming, it’s always fun to peruse the “hot destinations for the new year” lists that travel magazines and websites post at this time of year.

In the case of Travel + Leisure’s 50 hot destinations for 2023, the list reflects the dreams of its editors, who are busily planning where they most want to go in the months ahead. It’s an eclectic list and one that’s divided by vacation type, from “beach vibes” — think Bermuda, the Cayman Islands and coastal Uruguay — to “cultural riches.” If you’re a foodie or a wine lover, you may want to check out the gastronomic destinations, which range from France’s Jura region to California’s Central Coast, home to Paso Robles and SLO wine country.

And if what you’re after is big city fun, T+L has that, too, with a list that includes Copenhagen, the UNESCO World Capital of Architecture for 2023, as well as Madrid, Seoul and our own city by the bay. San Francisco gets a nod for its classics — “the arts, the nature, the dim sum, the sourdough,” editor Hannah Walought writes — as well as new attractions. The Presidio Tunnel Tops get a shout-out, as does the new Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco, where admission is always free.

Find all 50 destinations — along with details on what to see and do there — at www.travelandleisure.com . Meanwhile, here’s a peek at those big cities with oomph.

‘Friendly’ and ‘walkable’ city named one of the best UK destinations

View of a street in Leicester, England.

Looking for your next day trip destination? A ‘friendly’ and ‘walkable’ city has been named one of the UK’s best destinations .

Leicester – the final resting place of Richard III – has been shortlisted for best UK destination at the Group Leisure & Travel Awards.

Home to historic buildings, famous Indian restaurants and Leicester City football club, this East Midlands city is often overlooked in favour of its larger sibling Nottingham .

Locals and tourists alike, however, are raving about Leicester’s wow factor.

‘Walkable and the people are pretty friendly. Only an hour and half train ride from London, but there’s already a good amount of stuff to do. Amazing food and restaurants as well,’ Reddit user @tillybilly89, who moved to the city to study, wrote.

‘Leicester is the most affordable place I have lived in England yet only 2 hours or less from big cities,’ added @Travelin2017, whilst @summa-awilum, who used to live in Los Angeles, praised the East Midlands gem for being ‘multicultural.’

Pretty New Walk in Leicester.

‘It’s multicultural, it’s a good size, it has a nice central location, it’s affordable, and it has a good arts scene. There’s a lot of history in Leicester, too, and it’s a fun place to show off to family and friends when they visit.’

Things to do in Leicester

Into history? Leicester is one of the UK’s oldest cities, and, perhaps most famously, the Battle of Bosworth – the last battle in the War of the Roses – took place in the county.

Visitors should take a trip to the King Richard III Visitor Centre to learn the story of how the famous King of England, who was slain in 1485, was found underneath a city centre carpark in September 2012.

The reinterred Richard IIIin Leicester in 2015.

Now, after a state funeral, his body lies in the Leicester Cathedral – making Leicester one of the few places in the UK where a British monarch is laid to rest.

And, if you want even more War of the Roses info, head over to Market Bosworth, a picturesque town with a market square, lined with cute tea rooms and independent shops. Afternoon tea at Softley’s is delicious, try the Turkish fayre at Istanbul BBQ Kitchen, or have slap up pub meal at The Black Horse.

The nearby Battlefield is thought to be where Henry Tudor and King Richard fought for the crown – recent research found the battle actually happened about a mile away, but the place is still worth a visit to learn more about the battle – and for the stunning countryside views.

Back in the city, The Guildhall Museum is the oldest building still in use in Leicester, with the earliest part dating back to 1390.

It acted as the town hall, and was famously the centre of celebrations after Elizabeth I’s navy defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588.

There’s also the National Space Centre, the only museum in the world that houses upright space rockets indoors, and anyone who went to school in Leicester will be familiar with New Walk museum. Its Egyptian and Dinosaur galleries are always popular with little ones, making it a family friendly day out.

The best bars in Leicester

  • Audrey Bar is an instagrammable bar that serves up bottomless brunch, great cocktails – on the weekends it comes with the soundtrack of RnB, garage and hip hop bops.
  • For great music and cocktails – with a dance floor space – head to Fat Cat .
  • 33CankStreet bills themselves as Leicester’s first and best table service cocktail bar. Book a table here for creative drinks you don’t get anywhere else.
  • Lane 7 has 12 bowling venues around the UK, and the Leicester spot is definitely worth a visit. There’s bowling, karaoke, darts, pool, crazy golf and, of course, booze.
  • For fancy wines, Veeno has a huge range, plus you can get wine flights. They start at £10 per person for three.

If museums aren’t your thing, Leicester has a vibrant arts scene – famous musical exports include Kasabian and Mahalia.

The Shed , in the cultural quarter, is the place to go to discover new talent, with live music and DJs every weekend.

The Curve Theatre illuminated at dusk in Leicester's cultural quarter.

If film and theatre takes your fancy, the Curve plays host to touring West End shows – and you can even catch performances here before they make it to London. The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾ premiered here (based on the book written by Leicester legend, Sue Townsend), before going to the capital.

For independent cinema the Phoenix Theatre shows everything from major Hollywood releases to tiny independent films. There’s also a cafe and rooftop bar, The Nest, making it perfect for a date or special night out.

Leicester Tigers fans in a crowd waving flags.

And if sport is more your idea of theatre, the city loves it’s sport – Leicester City Football Club and the Leicester Tigers rugby team both have huge followings. You can also watch the Leicester Riders play basketball, or head to Grace Road to watch some cricket.

Leicester has its fair share of green spaces and waterways too, with the Grand Union Canal running from London to Birmingham and, subsequently, straight through the city centre.

Abbey Park, Fosse Meadows and Beacon Hill also offer up a quiet spot for an afternoon stroll.

And there’s also Bradgate Park – another spot for the historians as it’s where Lady Jane Grey – who was Queen for just nine days – lived. But it’s also stunning, be sure to keep an eye out for the deer.

And when it comes to food, Leicester is famous for its Indian restaurants. The city is proud of its diversity, and it’s often said Leicester has the largest Diwali celebrations outside of India.

Along the Golden Mile, you can find authentic food, spices and clothing. Popular restaurants include Bobby’s, which serves up vegetarian Indian food, and Paddy’s Marten Inn.

How to get to Leicester

The best way to get to Leicester is by train. It’s just over an hour away from London, and trains go direct from St Pancras International.

Alternatively, you can get a train to Nuneaton from London Euston, which tend to be cheaper, and slightly quicker. You can either grab a cab into Leicester, or get another train. Altogether, this route takes between 1 hour 35 minutes and 2 hours 19 minutes.

Planning to Combine Business and Leisure Travel? You’re Not Alone.

As employees increasingly add leisure time to their business trips, companies are trying to figure out where their duty of care obligations begin and end.

On a Sunday in late January, Melinda Buchmann, who lives in Florida and supervises client relations for RevShoppe, a 30-person remote company advising organizations on sales techniques and strategies, arrived in Banff, Alberta, to help set up a four-day company meeting.

The last day of the event, her husband, Josh, a director of strategic partnerships for the delivery company DoorDash , who also works remotely, joined her. They spent two leisurely days hiking in Banff National Park and visiting Lake Louise.

“I take advantage, because I don’t know when I’m going to return,” Ms. Buchmann said of the decision to combine downtime with a business trip.

As postpandemic work life has changed, and arrangements now include full-time office attendance as well as hybrid and remote work, so, too, has business travel. The phenomenon known as bleisure, or blended business and leisure travel, was initially embraced largely by digital nomads . But such combined travel is now also popular with people outside that group . Allied Market Research, a subsidiary of Allied Analytics, based in Portland, Ore., estimated that the bleisure travel market was $315.3 billion in 2022 and would reach $731.4 billion by 2032.

As employees increasingly add leisure time to their business trips, companies are struggling to determine where their legal obligation to protect employees from harm — their so-called duty of care — begins and ends. And workers may think that because their trip started with business, they will get all the help they need if something goes wrong on the leisure end. Instead, they should generally consider the leisure part of a trip as a regular vacation where they cover all expenses and contingencies.

Companies are responsible for knowing where their employees are during a business trip, covering expenses if an accident or emergency occurs, securing new lodging if a hotel is damaged, even swapping out a broken down rental car. Still, it’s not entirely clear if that coverage ends completely after the conference or the last client meeting.

Companies recognize that threats are increasing, said Robert Cole, senior research analyst focusing on lodging and leisure travel at Phocuswright, a market research company. They are trying to figure out how to take care of a valuable company resource, the employee, without leaving themselves open to financial risk or potential litigation.

“Crafting a comprehensive policy that balances business objectives, employee well-being and legal considerations can be challenging,” Nikolaos Gkolfinopoulos, head of tourism at ICF, a consulting and technology services company in Reston, Va., wrote in an email.

Employees may be on their own without realizing it and may be surprised by out-of-pocket expenses if they require hospital care abroad or evacuation, said Suzanne Morrow, chief executive of InsureMyTrip , an online insurance travel comparison site in Warwick, R.I.

Ms. Morrow said medical coverage provided by a company “is generally only for the dates of the actual business trip abroad.” If travelers are extending the trip for personal travel, she added, “they would want to secure emergency medical coverage for that additional time abroad.”

Employers and employees are left to figure out when the business portion of the trip ends and the leisure segment begins, a significant detail if an employee has a medical emergency. “Where does the corporation liability end?” said Kathy Bedell, senior vice president at BCD Travel, a travel management company.

Companies have varying policies to deal with the new travel amalgam. The chief executive of RevShoppe, Patricia McLaren, based in Austin, Texas, said the company provided flexible travel options and allowed employees to work anywhere they choose.

Even so, there are constraints. The company requires all employees, including executives, to sign liability and insurance waivers when they are on a voluntary company-sponsored trip, such as an off-site meeting. Such waivers typically place responsibility on employees for their own well-being. And if they bring someone, they are responsible for that person’s expenses.

Employees are responsible for requesting the paid time off and notifying their managers of their whereabouts, although that part is not a requirement. Managers have to ensure adequate staffing, Ms. McLaren said.

Elsewhere, employees may not bother to mention the leisure portion of their trip. Eliot Lees, a vice president and managing director at ICF, said he had been on trips as a child with his parents when they combined business and leisure. His parents were academics, who would piggyback vacations onto conferences.

Now he does the same. “I don’t think I ever asked for approval,” he said. (ICF has no formal business-leisure travel policy. It’s allowed as part of personal time off.) After a conference in the Netherlands last year, he spent four days hiking in the northern part of the country.

“I go anywhere, and take more risks than I should,” he said. He said he didn’t carry personal travel or accident insurance.

Any nonchalance may quickly evaporate if a threat emerges. Security experts say even low-risk locations can become high-risk for a few days or weeks of the year.

“Companies are concerned about losing visibility into a traveler’s whereabouts if they booked flights and hotels outside their corporate travel management company,” Benjamin Thorne, senior intelligence manager in London for Crisis24, a subsidiary of GardaWorld, wrote in an email. “The company may think the traveler is in one city when, in reality, they could have booked a holiday package to another nearby city. This lack of visibility by the company makes it difficult to support travelers when a disaster occurs.”

He also raised the possibility that “a traveler with bleisure travel reservations and expectations may find their work trip canceled due to changes in the risk environment or company policy, disrupting their leisure plans.”

Will a company step in off hours if there’s a problem? “That depends on how you are booked,” Mr. Cole, the senior research analyst at Phocuswright, said. A rule of thumb is the further you get from corporate control, the greater the gray area gets.

Half of GoldSpring Consulting’s clients take the responsibility for the entire trip, said Will Tate, a partner at the consultancy based in Cross Roads, Texas, and a certified public accountant. They don’t want the reputational risk. The other half say: “The business trip ended Friday. That’s when we end our duty of care.”

Some companies are trying to define and narrow the gray area. “If you are clearly on personal time, there is no legal requirement for your employer to provide for you,” said Nicole Page, a lawyer whose practice includes employment law at Reavis Page Jump in New York.

Uber provides employees with advisories before a trip, travel assessments, safety tips while traveling and emergency travel assistance, including medical aid, airport travel support, urgent and emergency assistance, and lost or stolen personal property insurance whether they are on business or pleasure travel or a combination.

And at DoorDash, Chris Cherry, head of global safety and security, wrote in an email that “while personal travel is not something we track, we have received requests to extend our travel support capabilities to personal travel.” Mr. Cherry said in those cases, the company has manually added employee leisure itineraries to its travel risk management system and “provided the same level of overwatch that we do for regular business travel.”

The Buchmanns plan to travel this month to Barcelona, Spain, for the McDonald’s Worldwide Convention. DoorDash will have a booth, and Mr. Buchmann will work on the exhibit floor and also entertain clients.

Ms. Buchmann will accompany him. She plans to go sightseeing in the morning, and work in the afternoons and evenings Barcelona time. She will also take three days of paid time off and has shared her plans with Ms. McLaren, the RevShoppe chief executive.

They will stay a day after the conference and plan to visit the Dalí Theater and Museum in Figueres. “I’m sure there will be no shortage of tapas and window shopping along way,” Mr. Buchmann said. He expects to be back at work the next Monday.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis will visit Indonesia, East Timor, Papua New Guinea and Singapore in September, the Vatican announced Friday, confirming the longest trip of Francis’ papacy that is sure to test his health, stamina and mobility.

The Vatican confirmed the Sept. 2-13 visit, saying the 87-year-old pope would visit Jakarta, Indonesia; Port Moresby and Vanimo, Papua New Guinea; Dili, East Timor; and Singapore. Further details will be announced later.

Francis’ health has become a source of increasing concern and speculation, even though the pontiff is able to carry on with a rigorous schedule of meetings at the Vatican and even excursions to local parishes.

Francis, who had part of one lung removed as a young man, had to cancel a planned visit to Dubai late last year after he came down with a bad case of bronchitis. He suffered from respiratory problems all winter and had to curtail his participation in Holy Week events to save his energy for Easter.

Francis has also been using a wheelchair for nearly two years because of bad knee ligaments, and has said that traveling has become increasingly more difficult.

And yet at 11 days, the trip would be the longest of Francis’ papacy, outpacing by a few days some of his long trips to the Americas early on in his 11-year papacy. It will bring the Argentine Jesuit to the world’s most populous Muslim nation, Indonesia, as well as the former Portuguese colony of East Timor, where the Catholic Church wields enormous influence.

There is also a chance of another leg to the trip being added later: This week, the Vatican foreign minister, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, was in Vietnam and discussed a papal visit, Vatican News reported, without providing details.

In a statement announcing the visit, the Indonesian foreign ministry welcomed the visit and recalled that it had originally been scheduled for 2020 but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The visit of Pope Francis to Indonesia holds significant importance to the Indonesian people, not only for Catholics but also for all religious communities. The visit is also expected to strengthen the message of tolerance, unity and world peace,” the statement said.

Indonesia is home to roughly 242 million Muslims and 29 million Christians — 8.5 million of whom are Catholics — according to a 2022 report by the Religious Affairs Ministry.

East Timor, which today has a population of about 1.2 million people, is Southeast Asia’s only predominantly Christian nation with the exception of the Philippines. According to the 2015 census, 97.6% of East Timor’s population is Catholic.

The visit to East Timor will likely reignite attention over a clergy sex abuse scandal involving its revered independence hero and Nobel Peace Prize winner. The Vatican confirmed in 2022 that it had sanctioned Bishop Carlos Ximenes Belo following allegations that he sexually abused boys there during the 1990s. Belo is believed to now be living in Portugal.

Francis will be the first pope to visit Papua New Guinea since St. John Paul II went there in 1984. The country, in a strategically important part of the South Pacific, has struggled with tribal violence and civil unrest.

John Paul also visited Singapore, in 1986. The country today is home to 395,000 Catholics and Francis in 2022 made its archbishop Singapore’s first cardinal.

In a statement welcoming the visit, Cardinal William Goh, said it “will bring renewed fervor to all Catholics in Singapore, uniting them in faith and mission, especially in these most challenging of times.”

The Vatican has planned only one other papal trip this year — to Belgium to celebrate the anniversary of the country’s Catholic university. Francis has also said he wants to return to his native Argentina , but no plans or dates have been announced.

S’well has its own XL travel tumbler now, and you’ll want 1 in every color

  • Published: Apr. 13, 2024, 9:30 a.m.

S'well XL Tumbler for spring 2024

The new S'well XL Tumbler is available in 40-ounce and 30-ounce sizes, with a stainless steel lid, straw and four springtime-matte shades. S'well

  • Danielle Halibey | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

Water bottles are among the most prized possessions a person can own. S’well set the tone for this hydration domination in the early 2010s as the “emotional support water bottle” — still years before TikTok started manifesting the trend .

Now, the brand is trying to take the lead again in this domination with the debut of its own “it” tumbler in the Tumbler XL in 40-ounce and 30-ounce sizes for $45 and $40, respectively.

At some point S’well’s status as the go-to water bottle was all but eclipsed by the tumbler titans of industry — Stanley, YETI and Owala — but this release could be its major comeback.

While Stanley and Owala launched their own classic, slim and tapered screw-top sippers , S’well is trying their hand at the popular, jumbo tumbler style.

The Tumbler XL comes in four spring-forward pastels: Hydrangea Blue, Hydrangea Pink, Pistachio and Himalayan Salt.

It has several features that can help it stand out from the crowd, including:

  • Therma-S’well Technology with a triple-layered, vacuum-insulated design that S’well says keeps drinks at an optimal temperature for longer — 50 hours cold, 10 hours hot and iced for four days
  • an ergonomic handle and condensation-wicking exterior that is meant to remain dry and avoid leaving moisture on your hands or tabletops
  • a 91% percent recycled food-grade 18/8 stainless steel exterior, a splash-free lid and straw
  • BPA/BPS-free
  • dishwasher-safe and can be hand washed with warm, soapy water while the lid can go on the top-rack only

This U.S. City Is the No. 1 Choice Among Baby Boomers for Retirement

Sin (City) is in.

By 2030, every member of the Boomer generation will be of retirement age . Retirement can be a time of great change and excitement, and, according to a new report by Bank of America, Boomers are more interested in retiring to fun-filled destinations than quietly spending their golden years in the suburbs.

“The latest Home Buyers and Sellers Generational Trends report from the National Association of Realtors found that for the first time since 2014, baby boomers overtook millennials as the generation with the biggest share of homebuyers,” Bank of America shared in its Housing Morsel Report. “From July 2021 to July 2022, 39 percent of surveyed homebuyers were baby boomers, followed by 28 percent of millennials and 24 percent of Gen X.”

So, where are Boomers buying up all that property? According to the same report, Las Vegas is the No. 1 spot for this particular generation of homebuyers.

“Bank of America data suggests baby boomers are relocating to Las Vegas and Tampa, Florida, while millennials prefer Austin, Texas,” the report noted, adding that both “groups are leaving the larger cities of San Francisco and New York.”

What makes Las Vegas so attractive to boomers? According to a 2023 study by Empower , a financial services company, Las Vegas ranked as the top spot for retirement thanks to its affordability, tax friendliness to retirees, ease of access to health care, and of course, its year-round sunshine.

“Based on our analysis, Las Vegas was the most affordable U.S. city for retirees,” the report’s findings stated. “For those looking for their daily dose of Vitamin D, Sin City ranked second for average yearly sunshine, and proved very tax-friendly, with no state income tax, and no estate or inheritance taxes. Additionally, Las Vegas has a thriving senior community and plenty of entertainment options.”

The only downfall, however, is Las Vegas, like many places around the U.S., is experiencing a significant affordable housing shortage, making it potentially difficult for some retirees to find a necessary cost-of-living balance.

“We need more product,” Lee Barrett, the president of the Las Vegas Realtors, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal in 2023. “What’s kept the values up in the Las Vegas market is that lack of product, so it’s a supply and demand issue.”

If you can’t find housing as a retiree in Vegas, Bank of America’s report noted that two cities in Florida — Tampa and Orlando — are also top choices for baby boomers. And Florida will also be in style for retirees.

1. Pinnacles National Park – An escape into the wild!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Pinnacles National Park

Choose wilderness whenever possible and take a break from the constant noise and stimulation of technology.

In an age where we are constantly plugged in, spending time in nature can be incredibly refreshing and rejuvenating.

A 90-minute drive from San Jose will transport you to a completely different world. You will step into silence and stillness.

The Pinnacles National Park is a small national park located in the Salinas Valley and is known for its impressive rock formations and caves. One of the best things about this park is its diversity.

You can find everything from stunning desert landscapes to lush green forests in Pinnacles National Park. And don’t forget to keep an eye out for the park’s famous namesake – the Pinnacles!

These towering rock formations are a sight to behold, and they make for some great photos. Spend some time sitting beside a beautiful stream located a few miles from the east entrance visitor center.

Then go for a hike. You can choose to do rock climbing or just take out your binoculars and watch beautiful birds all around.

If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the California Condor. Pick an activity that suits your mood. Also, enjoy a picnic under a tree.

I have visited Pinnacles many times and loved being there every time . I love hiking to the Bear Gulch cave on the, you guessed it, Bear Gulch trail.

You can choose a different trail from easy, moderate, and strenuous ones. Also, don’t forget to stop at the visitor center and buy a souvenir for your memories .

A trip to Pinnacles is one of the best day trips from San Jose to refresh in the wilderness.

2. Muir Woods National Monument – One of the best day trips from San Jose, California

travel and leisure #1 city

Located just an hour and a half from San Jose, Muir Woods National Monument is a must-visit for nature lovers. This beautiful park is home to towering redwoods, and it’s a great place to go for a hike or a picnic.

The grandeur of the redwoods is something that will take your breath away. The tall, large, lush redwood trees soar up into a vivid blue sky.

The branches wave in the wind, and the birds fly across its crown. The woods themselves are so dense – the way the light comes in, it doesn’t shine directly in, it just filters through in pieces.

It’s a different kind of light, and it’s really beautiful. Explore these ancient giants who have stood watch over us since before recorded history began!

The scenery at Muir Woods is simply stunning. With a little sunlight and fresh air to invigorate your soul plus views so breathtaking they’ll make any photographer’s heart skip beats- this spot has it all!

3. The Monterey Bay Aquarium – An escape into another world!

travel and leisure #1 city

If you’re looking for something fun to do with the family, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is a great option for a day tour.

Deep under the sea, a colorful world exists, and if we get a chance to peep into that world for a day, the excitement knows no bound.

If you visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium, you will love watching another world in slow motion through giant glass windows.

One of my favorite exhibits in this aquarium is the 28 feet kelp forest enclosure, which is one of the tallest aquarium exhibits in the whole wide world.

If you want to take a break and relax, then head over to the food area. Sit near a window, order a sandwich and see the boats sailing by.

If you have kids, check out the play area too. Buy a souvenir from the aquarium gift shop. I remember buying a stuffed red octopus that resembles an original Octopus I found in one of the exhibits.

Tip: After exploring the Monterey Bay Aquarium, head towards Cannery Row and enjoy a delicious dinner at an open-air patio!

You can also listen to a Self-Guided Audio Tour while exploring the historic sites along Cannery Row where John Steinbeck was inspired.

Travel Tip : There are plenty of ways to enjoy a beautiful day in Monterey! Read my Monterey travel guide about  the Top things to do in Monterey .

4. Napa Valley and its scenic drives – Enjoy the luxury!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Napa Valley

Wine lovers rejoice! Napa Valley has some of the world’s best wines. It is an ideal destination for those who want to tour various vineyards while sampling wines at various tasting rooms.

The scenery is just as amazing as the wine in Napa Valley. Also, go for a scenic drive to enjoy while you sip on some delicious wine.

A drive through the Silverado trail is my favorite. This scenic route winds through the heart of Napa Valley .

You’ll find winding roads that lead through picturesque vineyards and rolling hills. You can also cruise through the back roads of Calistoga and Spring Mountain and visit the 3.4 million-year-old Petrified forest .

Walk among majestic petrified redwood giants and step back in time. You can also choose to explore the back roads of Coombsville AVA (AVA stands for American Viticultural Area), a quick scenic drive.

This is one of the most unexplored regions of the valley where you can enjoy a slower pace and a taste of country life.

Tip: Autumn is the best time to visit the wine country. I especially love seeing the spectacular fall colors in Napa Valley .

Whether it’s for a week, a day, a glass or a meal – when the time is right, experience the Napa Valley Spirit for yourself. Visit Napa Valley

5. Marin Headlands – A scenic escape!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Golden Gate Bridge, Marin Headlands

If you’re looking for a day trip with incredible views, consider exploring Marin Headlands. This area is located just north of the Golden Gate Bridge and offers stunning vistas of the Bay Area.

You can explore the area by hiking or cycling, and there are also plenty of places to stop for a picnic lunch.

6. Capitola – A quirky escape!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Capitola

Capitola is a cheery beach with candy-colored houses. It is the oldest seaside resort town in California.

If you are looking for a picturesque, quaint, and relaxing vacation destination then Capitola village fits just perfectly.

I enjoyed a leisurely walk at the Capitola wharf and witnessed a stunning sunset. I often feel that a long, wandering walk is the best way to imbibe the sights, sounds, and smells around us.

You can go fishing from Capitola Wharf (no fishing permit required when fishing off the pier). Also, look out for the frequent flowers left on the wharf’s railing that add an additional pop of color to the vibrant village scene.

I also loved the beautiful murals sprinkled in and around the Capitola village and the wharf. I love the way murals revitalize public spaces .

You’ll find excellent culinary options in this popular beachfront destination. Also, you can explore New Brighton State Beach, Lighthouse Field State Beach, and Seacliff State Beach.

If you’re lucky you might even catch a local surfing competition. Capitola is large enough to enjoy diverse activities yet small enough that it can be explored on foot.

While there are many beach towns along California’s beautiful coastline, there’s only one Capitola. I love visiting this quaint beach town and I highly recommend it both for a day trip or a weekend trip from the Bay Area .

Interesting fact: On 18 August 1961, residents in the town of Capitola, California, awoke to find sooty shearwaters slamming into their rooftops, and their streets covered with dead birds.

News reports suggested domoic acid poisoning (amnesic shellfish poisoning) as the cause. This incident inspired the iconic Alfred Hitchcock film ‘The Birds’.

7. Almaden Quicksilver County Park – A historical landmark in Northern California!

Are you looking for a day trip that is both fun and educational? Then be sure to visit Almaden Quicksilver County Park.

Located in South San Jose, Almaden Quicksilver County Park is a sprawling park that covers over 4,163 acres and is home to miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as opportunities for camping, fishing, and horseback riding.

Additionally, this popular park features several historical sites, including the remains of the New Almaden mercury mine.

During early spring , the park offers one of the most spectacular wildflower displays in the region. This park is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers, thanks to its beautiful scenery and abundance of wildlife.

Tip: Choose the Hacienda entrance to the park. It features the iconic New Almaden bell tower and outdoor mining museum in the parking lot of the Hacienda Entrance.

Also, don’t miss seeing St. Anthony Church, located within a minute of walking distance. It is one of the oldest churches in San Jose, a nd features beautiful architecture.

8. Point Reyes National Seashore – A breathtaking grandeur of nature!

travel and leisure #1 city

A trip to Point Reyes National Seashore has many layers of beauty. When I saw large herds of tule elk, native to California, basking in the sun on a green valley, it gave me a bucolic feeling.

While walking through the Cypress tree tunnel , a must-see place, on the way to Point Reyes Lighthouse, I felt that I have left the cacophony of the modern world somewhere afar.

I loved the wildness of the Pacific when I spent a day at Drakes Beach. With the beautiful view of the vast expanse of the Pacific ocean from above, Point Reyes National Seashore is a gem.

While walking to Point Reyes Lighthouse, I got to see a gorgeous sunset. The white visitor center sparkled along the way ❤️.

I greeted the twilight with the symphony of the evening wind. This natural sanctuary is a refuge for us mortal souls.

I would highly recommend savoring all the attractions slowly while exploring the bucolic and the wild.

9. Half Moon Bay – A top day trip from San Jose, California

travel and leisure #1 city

I always enjoy a day trip to Half Moon Bay , a small city on the California coast. I think one of the best things about a day trip to Half Moon Bay is that it’s so close, but still feels like an escape.

With all its breathtaking views and activities waiting around every corner, Half Moon Bay is a perfect destination for a day trip from San Jose.

A few of my favorite spots are the Ritz Carlton – a luxurious hotel located right on the coast with free coastal access, Seal Cove Cypress Tree Tunnel in Moss Beach, the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, and Cowell-Purisima Trail for a beautiful hike.

Enjoy a virtual hike at Cowell-Purisma Trail below 💚

10. 17 Mile Drive – A best and must-do day trip from San Jose, California

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, 17mile drive, Lone Cypress

The 17-mile drive is one of the most scenic drives in the world, and it’s a must-visit from San Jose. The drive winds through dramatic coastal cliffs, snow-white beaches, mystical forests, and iconic golf courses.

You’ll get to see some of the most beautiful sights in the area, including the inspiring Lone Cypress, Crocker Grove – home to the largest and oldest Monterey Cypress trees in existence , look at the untouched beauty at  Fanshell Beach, Point Joe, and Spanish Bay.

At the end of your drive, take a stroll by the beautiful golf course and the Pacific Ocean at The Lodge – a luxurious Pebble beach resort.

The coastal access is open to the public. Finish your day after dining at one of the restaurants at The Lodge at Pebble Beach.

Tip: Admission to 17-Mile Drive is $10 per vehicle. Check out the 17-mile drive map .

Fun fact: Novelist Robert Louis Stevenson was said to have roamed the hills and dunes that now shape the first five holes at Spyglass Hill.

The stunning scenery was supposedly his inspiration for the book,  Treasure Island .

11. Palo Alto – the birthplace of silicon valley

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Hp Garage, Birthplace of Silicon Valley

If you want to imbibe some Silicon Valley vibes, then head to Palo Alto and explore its various corners.

Palo Alto is home to some of the biggest tech companies in the world. Visit HP Garage, the birthplace of silicon valley tucked away on a quiet, tree-lined residential street near Stanford University.

The HP Garage stands today as the enduring symbol of innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit. You can visit the Stanford University campus and the Cantor Center for Visual Arts .

You will have a great time, believe me.

12. Pacific Grove – the Butterfly town

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Pacific Grove

Pacific Grove, the small town is beautiful all year-long. But the magic carpet or the blooming ice plant that graces Pacific Grove’s shoreline at Perkins Park during the spring makes it one of the perfect destinations for spring break .

Also, from October through February, thousands of monarch butterflies migrate to Pacific Grove, cluster together on pine, cypress, and eucalyptus trees in the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary.

Due to this unique phenomenon, Pacific Grove is nicknamed Butterfly Town and gives us another reason to visit Pacific Grove during the holiday season.

Another quirky place I like in Pacific Grove is a vibrant butterfly house . You have to see this in person ❤️. I especially enjoy its laid-back vibe – a Xanax for the soul!

Tip: Mark the exact address of the house full of butterfly sculptures and artwork – 📍309 9th St, Pacific Grove, CA 93950

13. Carmel-by-the-Sea – An escape to a beautiful beach town!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Carmel-by-the-sea

Another great option for a day trip from San Jose is Carmel-by-the-Sea , one of America’s Top Beach Towns.

This charming town is known for its art galleries, quaint shops, and world-famous golf courses, givi ng it a disti nctive Europea n vibe.

Exceptional dining, wine-tasting rooms, and boutiques make it an ideal place to relax. You can spend the day exploring or relaxing on Carmel Beach.

If you are in the mood to go for a hike, then take the scenic road starting at 8th Avenue and ending near Martin Way.

It meanders above the bluff overlooking Camel Beach through sculptured Monterey Cypress trees.

Travel Tip: There are plenty of ways to enjoy a beautiful day in Carmel-by-the-Sea! Read my travel guide about   the Top things to do in Carmel .

14. Stockton – An offbeat day trip from San Jose, California

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Stockton, Wat Dhammararam

Explore Stockton on a day trip from San Jose. Stockton is a city on the San Joaquin River, in California’s Central Valley, the most productive agricultural region of Califor nia and one of the most productive in the world.

There’s a lot to see and do in Stockton, California. My favorite is Wat Dhammararam, a Cambodian Buddhist temple in Stockton.

This temple features over 90 colorful and larger-than-life jewel-encrusted statues that celebrate the life and story of the Buddha, in a Cambodian setting.

One thing that I loved the most was the sculptures depicting the scenes which Gautama Buddha witnessed when he was a prince.

I have read about those scenes and realizations of Buddha many times but seeing them in the form of sculptures was remarkable.

Also don’t miss Pixie Woods – a lovely amusement park that is perfect for kids of all ages. Discover Pixie Woods’ enchanted forest and magical pathways and be transformed by a world of imagination and wonder.

If you love doing a picnic in the park, then Louis Park beside Pixie Woods is a perfect option.

If you are not in the mood for a long drive then here is an easy day trip from San Jose . I n less tha n a n hour, you can reach West Cliff Drive – a scenic, 3-mile promenade i n Sa nta Cruz .

While walking the path I often stop to take in the refreshing views of the Pacific. Soak up the sun and do some people-watching before heading to the Natural Bridges State Beach.

This park and beach is an excellent vantage point for viewing shorebirds, migrating whales, as well as seals and Sea otters playing offshore.

Further along the beach, public access tidepools offer a glimpse into life beneath the sea, while low tides reveal sea stars, shore crabs, sea anemones, and other colorful ocean life.

The park also includes a large area of coastal scrub and grasslands, with bright native wildflowers in the spring.

Tip: Visit Natural Bridges Monarch Trail from late October and all of November to go for a walk and observe the monarch butterflies which flock here in late autumn and stay here throughout the winter months.

16. Golden Gate Park, San Francisco – A beautiful park in a beautiful city!

If you’re looking for a fun day out in San Francisco, look no further than Golden Gate Park. With plenty of activities to keep you busy, it’s easy to spend a whole day here without getting bored.

To start your day, make your way to the Music Concourse. This beautiful open space is home to a variety of concerts and events throughout the year.

This world-renowned museum is a must-see for any visitor to San Francisco. It’s home to a variety of exhibits, including an aquarium, planetarium, rainforest, and natural history museum.

Next, head to the Japanese Tea Garden. This stunning garden is one of the most popular attractions in Golden Gate Park, and it’s easy to see why.

De Young Museum is a fine arts museum and is perfect for intellectual stimulation, reflection, and contemplation.

Also, go for a walk in their sculpture garden and enjoy a cup of coffee at the de Young Café in their outdoor setting.

There’s plenty to see inside the Golden Gate Park, so make sure you set aside enough time to do it justice. No matter what you choose to do, Golden Gate Park is a must-visit for anyone traveling to San Francisco.

17. Museums in San Francisco – For enriching day trips!

travel and leisure #1 city

If you are someone who always seeks to expand her frontier of knowledge then museums are often a nice place to start with.

I love how museums are like a book you can open up and always find new things inside, that inspire and stimulate.

I like getting lost in someone else’s world especially when all my own proposals don’t seem quite as feasible at times 😉.

The various museums in San Francisco with their unparalleled exhibits on art & science alike lure me. I have bee n to almost all the exciting museums in the city.

I spent delightful days exploring both classic-style museums and new-era immersive exhibits in San Francisco.

So, if you want enriching day trips on any of your weekends, choose any one of the museums below or all and explore. Here are my best picks.

One of my favorite places to go when I want something different is the San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art, or SFMOMA because they have amazing exhibits featuri ng the best of moder n art!

It makes me think.

I remember visiting the exhibition on the effervescent pop art of Andy Warhol  and enjoyed it thoroughly. Book tickets for SF MOMA

Legion of Honor

travel and leisure #1 city

If you want to explore classical Europea n art, then Legion de Honor Museum is a great place to visit. They have an amazing collection of paintings, sculptures, and artifacts focussi ng primarily o n art from Europe.

I remember seeing a sculpture of an eye by a Swiss artist and I was awestruck by its detail. I’d definitely recommend Legion of Honor to get a taste of Europea n museums right here i n Sa n Fra ncisco.

Book tickets for Legion of Honor .

Exploratorium

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Buckyball, Exploratorium

The Exploratorium in San Francisco is one of the top 10 science museums in the United States and provides a fertile platform for curious minds.

It encourages everyone to wonder – What? How? Why? Abstract concepts of science are displayed in an easy-to-understand format and are highly interactive. Book tickets for Exploratorium .

Tip: After spending a whole day exploring a museum, if you have some extra time, how about a fun activity?

How about a cable car ride at night 💖 ? Cable cars have come to symbolize San Francisco along with the Golden Gate Bridge.

A cable car ride in San Francisco at night is definitely an experience you won’t forget. The city is lit up and the views are spectacular.

The cars themselves are quite old and rattly, but that only adds to the charm. Make sure to hold on tight though, as these cars can move pretty fast!

Tip: Explore the Exploratorium at night with special Thursday programming (18+)

18. Explore the Presidio of San Francisco and spend a cultural evening in the city

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, The open lawns of the Presidio, San Francisco with the iconic red share chairs!

If you want to combine outdoor activities along with indoor ones on your day trip then Presidio in San Francisco is a great option.

This former military base is now a national park, and there’s plenty to see and do there.

One of the highlights of Presidio is the Main Parade Ground, where you’ll find rows of bright red chairs, affectionately called “share chairs”.

It’s a great place to relax with unbeatable Golden Gate Bridge views , and during the warmer months, a great spot for a picnic.

Another popular spot and my favorite in Presidio is the Lovers Lane trail and Wood Line to the right. Wood Line is an iconic work by one of the world’s most renowned artists, Andy Goldsworthy.

Made up of eucalyptus branches sourced from various park projects that required tree removal, Wood Line is more than 1,200 feet in length.

You have to see this outdoor art installation of trees that winds their way through the peaceful eucalyptus forest in person.

This secluded spot is perfect for a romantic stroll. Finally, don’t forget to visit the Walt Disney Family Museum while you’re in Presidio.

This unique museum is dedicated to the life and work of Walt Disney, and it’s a must-see for fans of his movies and cartoons.

Tip: After spending a beautiful day at Presidio, you can catch a show of the San Francisco Ballet or Listen to live music from the San Francisco Symphony at the Davies Symphony Hall.

You can also check for ongoing exhibitions in the city. I remember visiting the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit – a unique experience.

19. Big Sur – An unmissable escape from San Jose!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Big Sur, Bixby Creek Bridge

If you are in the mood for a long drive, then choose Highway 1 and drive to Big Sur , one of the best places for a day trip from San Jose.

Also, this is the best way to experience California’s breathtaking coast. With the Pacific Ocean as a constant companion, a sense of vastness permeates into our being while driving here.

The winding curves will take your breath away with their stunning views. Every turn here is beautiful. You can always choose to pull over at numerous turnouts and take in the amazing views.

One place where you must stop is Bixby Creek Bridge. After all, it is one of the most photographed bridges in California!

If you want to go on a hike, especially after sitting inside the car for long, then head towards the Pfeiffer Falls trail in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.

If you don’t feel like hiking, watch the water rush by in the Pfeiffer-Redwood Creek and relish a tasty dinner or afternoon coffee and snack in the Big Sur Lodge .

Perhaps it was one of the best coffee spots on this drive. If it is a sunny day and you enjoy outdoor sitting arrangements with stunning views, Nepenthe is also a great option for a sumptuous lunch.

20. Gilroy – Garlic Capital of the World!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Gilroy Gardens

Gilroy is a small town located in Santa Clara County, California. Gilroy is known for its garlic crop and a large garlic festival that takes place every year featuring various garlicky foods such as garlic ice cream, leading to the city’s nickname, the Garlic Capital of the World!

If you’re looking for a fun day trip to do with your family or friends, Gilroy is a great option! Some of the main attractions in Gilroy include Gilroy gardens, Mt. Madonna County Park , Mt. Madonna Center, and Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple.

Gilroy Gardens is a garden-themed family theme park. The park has 22 rides and 5 attractions and is perfect for some fun and run for the little ones and the whole family.

Don’t miss Axel Erlandson’s Circus Trees and a train ride through the garden! Mount Madonna Center is a nature preserve and retreat center that offers hiking trails, yoga classes, and other outdoor activities.

After spending a couple of hours in Gilroy Gardens, head towards the Mount Madonna Center – a peaceful haven where you can step back, slow down, contemplate, and get engaged in deeper conversations with members there.

You can also join one of their yoga classes. Please reserve your spot there before going. I loved this center and the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple located inside.

I am not a particularly religious person but loved the spiritual and serene atmosphere.

Tip: If you are in the mood to go shopping then visit Gilroy Premium Outlets . It is one of Northern California’s largest outlet centers, where you’ll find impressive savings at more than 145 factory outlet stores.

21. Downtown San Jose – A world apart!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Downtown San Jose, The Tech Museum of Innovation

If you are in a mood to explore a town on foot then downtown San Jose is a great place to spend a day. There are plenty of things to see and do here. Explore them all at your pace.

Take a stroll through the Plaza de Cesar Chavez.

It is a popular place to hang out as it is located near museums such as The Tech Interactive and the illustrious San Jose Museum of Art. The park regularly attracts visitors with its musical performances and festivals.

I love the beautiful water fountains, flower beds, and even an open-air theater.

The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose is a must-see place for everyone, whether you are interested in technology or not.

At the heart of silicon valley, where new ideas emerge and lead us and have had such a profound influence on the world, a museum such as this is indeed expected.

All the exhibits here are interesting. Innovations in Health Care and Body Motion are two of my favorite exhibits. This museum entertains, educates, involves, and inspires. Book tickets for The Tech Museum

Also plan to visit the San Jose Museum of Art, located at a walkable distance from the Tech Museum of Innovation.

This premier modern and contemporary art museum in Silicon Valley has inspired me in different ways. I love seeing their well-thought exhibitions, all year round.

Whenever I visit this art museum, I am struck by the hanging colorful glass chandeliers by Dale Chihuly. Also do n’t miss the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph located in Downtown San Jose.

Tip: If you are tired after exploring the city head for a delicious dinner in one of the innumerable restaurants in downtown San Jose.

If you’re looking for a beautiful and serene nature escape among South Bay State Parks , Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is the place for you.

Among all of California’s 280 state parks, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve has often been called the “crown jewel of the State Park System.”

Select a sunny day and go for a hike. It offers a wild, majestic landscape laced with 14 meandering trails. If you choose a trail along the shoreline, as I did, you will get to see innumerable seabirds along the way.

The soothing serenity and abundance of natural beauty here will nourish the painter, poet, or photographer in you. If you want to spice up the day with some adventure, then go for scuba diving.

The sea near Point Lobos is considered to be one of the richest underwater habitats in the world.

Oakland is a beautiful city, and it’s definitely worth a day trip from Sa n Jose! There are so many things to see and do in Oakland, you could easily spend an entire day there. Here are some of the highlights.

Lake Merritt and its surroundings are perfect for a leisurely stroll. I often visit Lake Merritt especially around sunset for beautiful sunset photographs.

The reflection of the buildings, trees, and boats look stunning during the golden hour. But that doesn’t mean you have nothing else to do during the day.

Visit the adjacent Bonsai garden and spend some time savoring the beauty and diversity of these tiny plants.

Then visit the Oakland Museum of California to know the history of California and how it has evolved.

It is the best museum o n California by far, and you will be humbled and proud to know about how much influence it has had on the world! Don’t forget to check out the museum shop for some pretty cool souvenirs.

After exploring the museum, visit The Cathedral of Christ the Light , a new age church where Jesus Christ is created usi ng digital projectio ns.

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Computer History Museum

Technology is changing the geography of our lives. Since we live in the heart of Silicon Valley, it is interesting to know the long history of technology and its revolutionary impact on the world.

Visit the Computer History Museum in Mountain View and discover stories and exhibits that inform and inspire, or satisfy your curiosity with hands-on activities.

The story of computing is invigorating and is driven by the human passion for tinkering, inventing, and solving difficult problems.

Spend a day here and you will go back home thinking about human ingenuity. Silicon Valley’s innovative tech culture is built up around a belief that Change is Good .

While exploring this museum, I was thinking about the changes brought about by technology to every aspect of our lives.

The pace of change confounds me often. This museum gave me a fertile ground to reflect upon many profound things directly related to our lives.

After exploring the Computer History Museum, head over to Googleplex in Mountain View – the corporate headquarters of Google. Enjoy a cool sculpture garden there before heading back home.

26. Healdsburg – For a taste of wi ne cou ntry i n So noma Cou nty

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Healdsburg is a city located in Sonoma County

If you want to plan an incredible wine country day trip in a quaint, yet mighty town then Healdsburg, located at the north end of Sonoma County is matchless.

Open outdoors with stunning natural scenery, delicious food and wine, and warm hospitality here is a true celebration of California life.

Settle in a relaxed atmosphere at any of the vineyards and escape to happiness. I highly recommend La Crema Estate at Sarlee’s Vineyard and Angeline – Martin Ray Vineyards & Winery .

If you are planning a trip here in spring don’t miss seeing the beautiful garden named Richard’s Grove at Sarlee’s Vineyard. Stroll through Healdsburg’s charming downtown district, filled with art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants.

Be sure to stop by Healdsburg’s lovely central Plaza, a beautiful public square, which was named by Travel + Leisure Magazine as one of “America’s Most Beautiful Town Squares.”

When people think of wine country, they typically think of Napa Valley. Napa and Sonoma are collectively known as California wine country, but despite being close to each other—only separated by a mountain range—both wine capitals are very different from each other. Sonoma’s wineries are more laid-back, less crowded and commercialized than Napa. Travel Pulse

27. Davenport, Santa Cruz – One of my favorite day trips from San Jose, California

If you’re looking to slow down a bit then head towards Davenport, California.

Nine miles north of Santa Cruz, Davenport’s coastline is carpeted with mustard fields in spring and includes sweeping vistas of the Pacific Ocean.

Locals call this area SlowCoast. Relax at Davenport beach and see unique rock formations, including the “Shark Fin,” at Davenport Cove Beach.

After your daily work, have you ever looked up and got lost in the beauty of the moon or the immense night sky? I am sure you have.

So, plan a drive to Lick Observatory, which is the world’s first permanently occupied mountain-top observatory.

Come here and get lost in the world of cosmos through its various exhibits. Listen to a short informal talk about Lick history while taking a look at the Great Lick Refractor in the 36-inch telescope dome for free .

Also, don’t forget to take a short walk to the Shane Dome to view the 120-inch Reflector. The Shane reflector is one of the major telescopes used to discover extrasolar planets.

29. Moss Landing State Beach and Salinas – A literary escape!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, National Steinbeck center

How can we live without our lives? How will we know it’s us without our past? John Steinbeck

This is by John Steinbeck, a winner of the Nobel Prize in literature. Spend a few hours exploring the National Steinbeck Center and I am sure you would love it.

Buy one of his books, the Grapes of Wrath being my favorite, from the museum and head towards Moss Landing State Beach.

In Moss Landing State Beach , relax and feel the sun while reading the book you bought. This is definitely off-beat but the creative indulgence is oh so satisfying!

I love this beach very much because it is easily accessible from the parking lot and is never very crowded. Later, you can also opt for whale watching, one of the must-do activities in Monterey .

Drive to Monterey Old Fisherman’s Wharf, where the boats set sail into the harbor with breathtaking sea views. Book your tickets for Monterey Bay Whale Watching Tour.

April 12, 2024 - Israel-Hamas war

By Chris Lau, Sana Noor Haq, Adrienne Vogt , Matt Meyer and Tori B. Powell , CNN

Our live coverage of Israel's war on Hamas in Gaza has moved  here .

USAID worker killed in Israel, agency says

From CNN's Jennifer Hansler

A staff member with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) died Friday in the Israeli port city of Jaffa, the agency announced.

The male staffer was with USAID’s West Bank and Gaza mission, the agency said in a brief statement.

USAID did not provide details on the circumstances around his death or his identity or citizenship.

“He was a dedicated member of our team for more than two decades, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues,” USAID said.

USAID is working with the US Embassy to work out details about the fatal incident and its follow-up investigation, it said.

US expects Iran to carry out direct strikes against targets inside Israel, sources say

From CNN's MJ Lee and Natasha Bertrand

The United States currently expects Iran will carry out strikes against multiple targets inside Israel and that Iranian proxies could also be involved in carrying out the attacks, according to a senior administration official and a source familiar with the intelligence.

The targets would likely be both inside Israel and around the region.

The beginning of a state-on-state conflict between Iran and Israel would mark a serious escalation in the region that the US has hoped to avoid.

US sees Iran moving military assets including drones and cruise missiles, sources say

From Natasha Bertrand and Oren Liebermann

The US observed Iran moving military assets around internally, including drones and cruise missiles, signaling that it is possibly preparing to attack Israeli targets from inside its own territory, according to two people familiar with US intelligence.

It is not clear whether Iran is preparing to strike from its soil as part of an initial attack, or if it is posturing to try to deter Israel or the US from conducting a possible counter strike on its territory.

One of the people said the US had observed Iran readying as many as 100 cruise missiles.

Some context: The Iranians want their retaliatory strike on Israel — a response to the Israeli strike on an Iranian consulate last week in Damascus — to be "significant," one of the people familiar with the intelligence said. But they also want to avoid getting embroiled in a direct war with Israel and the US, CNN has reported, which is why US intelligence has assessed that Iran may use its proxy forces to launch the first attack.

Israeli settlers storm village in West Bank and kill at least 1 Palestinian. Here's what you should know

From CNN staff

A view of damaged houses and burning vehicles after a raid by Israeli settlers on a town near Ramallah, West Bank on April 12.

Hundreds of armed Israeli settlers stormed a village in the occupied West Bank on Friday, setting fire to several homes and cars — and leaving at least one Palestinian dead — in one of the largest attacks by settlers this year, according to Palestinian officials.

The settlers attacked Al-Mughayyir village, east of Ramallah, raided homes and fired gunshots at residents, according to Amin Abu-Alia, the head of the village council. Videos obtained by CNN show parts of the village burning, with smoke billowing over several buildings and settlers lobbing rocks. Houses and cars are seen completely burnt up, with sounds of gunfire and clashes heard in the background.

Here are other headlines you should know:

US will attempt to intercept launches at Israel if feasible, US officials say

From CNN's Oren Liebermann and Natasha Bertrand

The US will attempt to intercept any weapons launched at Israel if it’s feasible to do so, two US officials told CNN, in an indication of the level of ongoing cooperation between the two militaries before an anticipated Iranian attack .

US Navy forces in the Red Sea have previously intercepted long-range missiles launched from the Houthis in Yemen toward Israel. US forces in Iraq and Syria could also potentially intercept drones and rockets targeting northern Israel, depending on the location from which they’re launched.

Gen. Erik Kurilla, the commander of US Central Command, has been in Israel meeting with the country’s security leadership. On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, met with Kurilla.

There have been a number of conversations where US officials have urged Israel not to escalate the situation in retaliating against Iran, according to one of the US officials.

Remember: An Iranian attack is expected in response to Israel’s deadly strike of Tehran's consulate in Damascus, Syria, last week.

The Damascus attack was the latest incident to stoke fears of a wider regional conflict breaking out in the Middle East during Israel's campaign in Gaza.

Diplomatic efforts: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has held a slew of calls to foreign counterparts aimed at pressuring Iran not to attack Israel.

The top US diplomat spoke with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Friday, according to a readout from State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.

Blinken also spoke with the Turkish, Chinese and Saudi foreign ministers in recent days, Miller said.

Israeli settlers kill at least 1 Palestinian while storming West Bank village

From CNN’s Kareem Khadder and Zeena Saifi in Jerusalem and CNN’s Benjamin Brown in London

A view of damaged houses and burning vehicles after a raid by Israeli settlers on a town near Ramallah, West Bank on April 12.

Hundreds of armed Israeli settlers stormed a village in the occupied West Bank on Friday, setting fire to several homes and cars in one of the largest attacks by settlers this year, according to Palestinian officials.

At least one Palestinian man was killed when shots were fired by Israeli settlers in the village of Al-Mughayyir, east of Ramallah, according to the head of the village council Amin Abu-Alia. He said he identified the killed Palestinian as his 26-year-old relative named Jihad Abu-Alia, who was meant to get married this summer.

At least 25 others were injured in the rampage, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah, the scale of which has not been seen since hundreds of settlers stormed through the villages of  Turmusayya  and  Huwara  in two separate incidents last year.

Between 1,000 and 1,200 settlers surrounded the village, and around 500 stormed it just after midday local time on Friday, blocking all the roads in the area, Abu-Alia told CNN.

He added that Israeli security forces informed Palestinian officials that the settlers were looking for a 14-year-old Israeli boy who had gone missing earlier in the day.

They attacked the village, raided homes and fired gunshots at residents, Abu-Alia said. Videos obtained by CNN show parts of the village burning, with smoke billowing over several buildings and settlers lobbing rocks. Houses and cars are seen completely burnt up, with sounds of gunfire and clashes heard in the background.

According to Abu-Alia, the Israeli military arrived at the scene at around 3 p.m. and didn’t stop the settlers from attacking the village. Israeli soldiers allowed them to raid homes, prevented Palestinian residents from moving around and blocked ambulances from reaching the injured, he added.

Abu-Alia told CNN settlers stole approximately 70 sheep from the Palestinian village.

In response to a question by CNN, the IDF said “violent riots were instigated in multiple locations in the area” following the search for the boy.

Israel says airstrikes targeted Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon

Israeli warplanes carried out several airstrikes on Friday, targeting "military buildings" used by Hezbollah fighters in parts of southern Lebanon, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

The areas include the Aita al-Shaab and the Taybeh in southern Lebanon, said Avichay Adraee, I DF spokesperson for Arab media,  in a post on X.

"During the day, several shells were fired from Lebanon towards the Upper Galilee region, without causing any casualties. IDF forces attacked the sources of fire," Adraee added.

The Israeli airstrikes were before the 40 rockets that were launched from Lebanon toward northern Israel Friday evening and claimed by Hezbollah.

Biden expects an attack from Iran will happen "sooner than later"

From CNN's Samantha Waldenberg

US President Joe Biden gives remarks in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on the White House campus on Friday in Washington, DC.

US President Joe Biden expects an attack from Iran will happen “sooner than later," he told reporters at the White House Friday.

“I don’t want to get into secure information but my expectation is sooner than later,” Biden said when asked how imminent an attack on Israel was.

Asked what his message to Tehran is right now, the president said “Don’t.”

In response to more shouted questions from reporters asking if American troops were at risk, Biden returned to the podium and said that the United States is "devoted” to the defense of Israel.

“We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed,” Biden said.

Remember: The United States says it is on high alert for a significant Iranian retaliatory attack following Israel's deadly strike on Tehran's consulate in Damascus last week, raising fears of a wider regional war. There remains a “real,” “credible” and “viable” threat of Iran launching strikes, the White House said earlier Friday, following Israel’s attack on  a diplomatic compound in Syria that killed three Iranian generals.
