Travel stair gate

LizziePizzie · 25/04/2011 22:12

Can anyone recommend a travel stair gate? Lindam Flexiguard Portable Safety Gate, BabyDan Gate To Go or Safety 1st Travel Stair Gate?

bumping - I have holiday cottages and our insurers don't allow us to have fixed stairgates, but I'd love to be able to offer my guests a portable alternative.

Don't get the Lindam, it's rubbish. It never fastens tightly enough and my 18 month old can pull it off.

The best travel stair gate

Best Travel Stair Gate 2023

When travelling with your children , you still want to make sure they are safe and that is why finding the best travel stair gate is so important. You don’t want your child falling down stairs or getting into rooms that might be dangerous such as the kitchen or bathroom when you are away on holiday or visiting family. The best travel stair is definitely out there for 2023.

Travel stair gates come in two different types: either safety barriers that can be configured however you need them to block doorways or make into playpens, or push fit safety gates that can be fitted across a doorway or stair way. Both versions can easily be used in your own house and so make a good investment. Read on to find out our suggestions and find gates that are available in the UK.

If you want to look at all types of stair gates then head over to our child safety gate guide .

Safety Barrier Stair Gates/ Room Dividers

A safety barrier travel stair gate is a useful option if you have an awkward room layout, open plan rooms, or a fireplace that you want to make safe. They are made up of a number of barriers that can be placed in different configurations depending on what your needs are. They can also be used as a travel playpen so you can keep your baby or toddler safe while you go to the bathroom or make some food.

Safetots Wooden Multi Panel Safety Barrier

This safety barrier from Safetots is a great multi-use option that you can take with you as a travel stair gate. The barrier consists of 5 panels, one of which is a gate making it even more flexible. The barrier can be used as a room divided, gate for doors or stairs and a fireguard depending on what you need.

The travel barrier is made from premium wood so will last well and offer good resale value. Each of the panels can be angled discreetly so will be able to fit most room layouts- a must for travelling. The door section is wide for easy access and has a two-step opening mechanism for extra safety.

Some reviews from Amazon:

“Overall I am really happy with the feel and look of this and I hope to get some years use from it.”

Pressure Fit Travel Stair Gates

Pressure fit stair gates are a good option to take with you when going on holiday. They are less versatile than the barrier safety gates but are smaller being only a gate so are easier to take with you. Because of their method of attachment which doesn’t require tools, they are easy to move from your home to a different house. The pressure fit element gives some flexibility so should fit a variety of different door sizes.

Below are some of the best ones available in 2023 that are also easy to take with you as a travel stair gate.

Lindam by Munchkin Sure Shut Pressure Fit Safety Gate

The Lindam Sure Shut Axis Pressure Fit Safety Gate is a really affordable option for a travel stair gate. The pressure fit mechanism on the stair gate makes it an ideal choice for travelling and can be used at home as well.

Lindam Sure Shut Axis Pressure Fit Safety Gate

These safety gates make use of pressure and wall pads to fit snugly in doorways or narrow hallways, with no need to screw into the wall or doorframe, they can be taken with you when stopping at relatives or going on holiday. Each gate comes with full instructions to help you reposition the gate when needed and you can find a how to video (linked below) to make the task even more straightforward.

Since this type of stair gate has a supportive U-shaped frame for stability, you should never install it at the top of a stairway as the bottom bar might pose a trip hazard . The quick, one-handed release makes it suitable for busy areas as it only takes a quick press on the release button to open the gate. You can also set the gate to either swing both ways or to only open one way- useful for the bottom on the stairs.

Lindam Sure Shut Axis Pressure Fit Safety Gate Lock

The child safety gate is made of strong steel and fits standard gate fits openings of 76-82 cm with the option of extending it to 117 cm with the optional extensions that come in various sizes so should be perfect for all manor of doorways and openings.

BabyDan Pressure Fit Stair Gate- wide fitting

If you know you need a wider fitting safety gate to take with you on your travels, this one from BabyDan is a really good option. The travel gate is wider than standard models and can be adjusted from 79.5 to 93.3 cm to fit into wider doorways or hallways.

travel stair gate mumsnet

Like all pressure fit stair gates, it can be fitted straight from the box with no need for any extra tools or fittings to complete the job. Just remove it easily from wherever you have it in your house and pack it into the car. The baby gate has easy one handed opening and can be fixed to open one way or two way depending on your needs.

This video from the Danish makers BabyDan shows the testing that their products undertake before being sold to parents.

Here’s some reviews from Amazon customers to help you decide:

“Easy to install , solid materials and easy to use , worth to buy”

“Once fitted, to stop our baby grandson entering, the kitchen it felt very secure. It has been in place about 4 months and works well. “

“Does not budge. Gave us peace of mind knowing our little one cannot get up or down the stairs.”

Stair railing safety net for toddlers

Child safety net for stair bannisters

So this product obviously isn’t a safety gate, but it is something that will come in really useful when you’re staying in a different house. It’s also really portable so a good purchase for those ‘just in case’ occasions. Basically the net can be used to make gaps between railings safe for your baby or toddler.

In some houses (particularly older ones built before more stringent building control), the gaps between stair rods will be wide enough for a baby or toddler to fall through. This could lead to an awful accident if your child happens to slip through when not closely attended. A good solution is to buy this mesh net which can be fixed using ties to the banisters. The mesh is strong enough to stop your child from falling through the gaps.

Customers on Amazon have said:

” This product is easy to fit and covers the landing banister struts easily. It is a bit long but double it up and it still works. “

” Pretty sturdy for a net, exactly what we needed to keep our little one from falling through the banisters. It comes with strings and cable ties and is a good size “

Why do you need a travel stair gate?

Even if you don’t use safety gates when you’re at home, there are still lots of good reasons to invest in a travel stair gate, especially if you’re away from home with your mobile baby or toddler quite often.

Even going to visit friends or family could pose problems if you’re not able to stop access to certain rooms such as the bathroom or kitchen. If you’re child is still in a cot at home but will be sleeping in a bed when you travel then you need to consider getting a travel stair gate so they can’t go wandering out of their room overnight.

If you’re staying in a holiday cottage or villa, you can’t be sure of knowing what the layout is or how safe rooms will be. To give you peace of mind, a travel stair gate will fit easily into a suitcase and should block off access to most dangers.

As the safety gate can be easily moved, you can have it blocking the kitchen during the day and then switch it to their room for overnight.

Best Travel Stair Gate Round-Up

Even when travelling you have no excuse not to have a baby gate with you. Pick the best travel stair gate for your needs- whether you want a barrier so you can use it as a playpen or fireguard as well as a stair gate or if you need a pressure fit safety gate to fit stairs or doorways.

Packing a stair safety net is also a good option- really light and small to fit in your luggage but gives you a number of options in keeping your baby or toddler safe if banisters or balcony spindles are wider spaced than you would be comfortable with.

As soon as your little explorer begins to move, a baby gate quickly becomes an essential piece of kit to help keep them secure while also allowing them to practise their new skills and investigate their surroundings safely. Baby gates offer peace of mind to frazzled parents, who – despite what they may wish – do not have eyes in the backs of their heads, especially when the washing machine needs unloading or the dishwasher putting on.

To baby proof your home, first things first: move all of your precious possessions two metres up and out of reach. Next up, lock all of your kitchen cupboards with safety latches . And last, but by no means least, install a stair gate, or three, depending on how many hazardous spots you have in your home.

What is a baby stair gate?

A baby stair gate does what it says on the tin. Typically made from wood, metal, or plastic, they provide protective barriers to prevent babies, toddlers, older children and family pets from accessing certain parts of the home.

They come in a number of heights and widths; can fit across stairs, in doorways, or even across entire rooms; and are easy for adults to open one handed (useful when you have a baby on your hip!) while also being secure enough to withstand small, curious hands.

Help choosing the best baby stair gate

Stair gates fit into a number of categories (see below) and the best type for you will depend on a few key factors, including the size of your house, the type of stairs you have, where you’d like to fit the gate, how handy you are with a drill, and the age (and dexterity) of your little one.

  • Pressure fit gates : These stay in place by pushing up against the walls, need to be fitted with adhesives but are less damaging to the surfaces and are, arguably, easier to install. They are less secure than screw-fit gates, however, and aren’t recommended for, say, the top of the stairs where you may want a slightly sturdier barrier.
  • Screw-fit gates : These are safer but require a drill and a dash of DIY.
  • Retractable gates : These are good for small spaces and minimalist interior decor fans.
  • Acrylic gates : Clear stair gates made from acrylic will also blend seamlessly into your home.
  • Free standing baby gates : Play pen style gates provide a clear, secure area for your baby but can take up space.
  • Baby gates with a door : Do you share your home with pets? If so you risk sabotaging your cats roaming space, so look for gates with pet flaps .
  • Extra-wide baby gates : No two doorways are the same, so measure everything before you proceed. If the space where you want to install a gate is wide, check with the brand as many now stock extenders too.
  • Tall safety gates : If your tiny tots are blessed with long legs or an adventurous spirit, it is worth shopping for extra tall gates to keep little escape artists safe.

10 safety tips to baby proof your home

Is your home safe for little explorers? Selina Russel, in-house safety expert at Fred Safety , offers the following home baby proofing safety tips:

  • Think of the world from a little one’s perspective: What could you see if you were at their level? Get down on your knees so you can see what they see! Look out for any potential dangers you can spot at their eye level.
  • Stairs can be dangerous : Until you are able to install a safety gate, keep the door shut so your baby stays in the room with you – even in the loo!
  • The kitchen can be a hazardous space : Get in the habit of using the back burners of your stove and angling pan handles away from the edge.
  • Be careful with hot drinks . Keep cups and glasses out of reach of little hands. Don’t carry your baby and hot drink at the same time.
  • Be aware of household chemicals, medicines or poisonous liquids . Keep out of a child’s reach and store in high cupboards.
  • Small items could be choking hazards : Check down the sides of sofas for coins or anything that may have fallen out of pockets.
  • Keep rubbish and waste away from curious hands : Bins in the bathroom are often small and accessible to a child - and keep nappy sacks out of reach too.
  • Ensure that sockets are always switched off when not in use: N ever leave electrical items where a child may find it. Be careful with hairdryers, straighteners and electrical fires.
  • House plants can be poisonous : Move them up and out of the way. You may wish to lend larger ones to a friend for safekeeping.
  • Keep space around windows clear : Prevent your child from being able to climb up and onto windowsills.

8 best baby stair gates to shop now

From filling awkward spaces to safety equipment that will blend in with your home decor, keep scrolling for our pick of the best baby stair gates to shop now.

If space is a concern then look no further than this folding baby gate from BabyDan . As well as keeping your little one safely away from staircases and other hazardous spots within the home, this is almost invisible when not in use, automatically folding away in a neat little concertina. The screw-fit gate is suitable for stairs, hallways, and corridors and can be mounted both inside and outside door frames and at the top or the bottom of the stairs. It can be opened one-handed and, because it is wall mounted it has no bar at the bottom which means you don’t need to worry about tripping over as you step through.

If ultimate peace of mind is what you’re after, this clear stair gate from Fred Safety has a range of features designed to provide reassurance. A colour indicator - red and green - lets you know when the gate is locked and a glow strip built into the bottom rail prevents it from becoming a trip hazard. The gate also has a slam shut auto lock feature for extra security and, although it can open both ways, has an optional one day swing setting. Slick and contemporary, the clear gate also blends perfectly into any modern family home and is made from strong acrylic that can withstand heavy impacts - ideal for especially rambunctious toddlers.

For ones so small, babies (or, more accurately, their stuff!) take up a hell of a lot of space in our homes. Sometimes, when they’re asleep, we want to come downstairs and relax in a more adult-friendly environment. This safety gate from Danish brand BabyDan serves just this purpose. As well as quickly and easily creating child-friendly spaces in your home without the hassle - or mess - of drilling into the walls, the gate is so easy for adults to remove (it requires no tools whatsoever) that you can take it down in the evening - perhaps if you’re having guests over for drinks, a fancy dinner party, or even just a glass of wine and a takeaway in a living room that looks a bit more like it did pre-kids!

We often assume that baby gates are for, well, babies. In fact, they can also provide a useful tool for families with toddlers or older children. One gate that’s perfect for such a job is the Easy Fit Plus Deluxe gate from Lindam, which is taller than the standard safety gates at 91.44cm from the floor to the top, making it ideal for keeping older, and taller, children safe. Even better for time-pressed parents (which is, I think, all parents) is the fact that the gate comes pre-assembled and ready to use and can be installed in just five minutes with the four point pressure fit frame providing peace of mind without the need for a drill.

If a stair gate isn’t for you - or if you’d rather have something a bit more portable - why not consider a playpen instead? This versatile gate from Dreambaby can either be used as a playpen or an extra-wide gate, giving you oodles of flexibility. It also has mesh panels, which means you can easily see your baby, and can be moved around the house depending on need. Plus, if you did want to use it as a barrier or gate, wall mounts are included for extra stability. Win-win!

For a neutral design, look no further than this classic gate from Safety 1st . It’s understated, affordable, and fits effortlessly into any family home. It can also extend to fit a 94cm gap (with the stair gate extension which is sold separately) and has all the additional features you might need: one handed opening and an easy closing system - ideal if you have your hands full. The pressure fitting also means no drill is required to fit.

Sometimes it’s the most awkwardly shaped spots that need cordoning off the quickest. The fireplace is one such example - and, frustratingly, my own baby seems intent on scaling ours! Fortunately, Babydan offers a gate configuration that can either be used as a room divider, an extra wide gate or - hurrah! - a fire surround. The gate is screw fix, giving plenty of security, and is mountable on straight or angled walls for extra flexibility. An extra wide gate gives easy access to stoke the fire on those cold winter nights, while adult operated quick release wall fittings mean you can adapt or remove the set up easily.

Dimensions : Height 71cm, width 90-278cm, depth 3cm

Type : Screw fit stair gate

If ultimate flexibility is what you’re after, this retractable gate from Dreambaby comes with two full sets of mounting brackets, meaning that you can clip on and clip off the gate panel and use it in two separate locations in your home or outside on patios and decks. Thanks to its extended width, this mesh gate is ideal for safely sectioning off areas of your garden too - the perfect option for when spring and summer come around. Even better, it retracts when not in use, preventing tripping and saving space wherever it is located.

Lindam Flexi Gate review

travel stair gate mumsnet

  • Sarah Barker

In a nutshell

This lightweight, folding stair barrier is great for holidays, but in a more permanent setting you may want to look for something sturdier and that can open easily

What we tested

  • Lightweight, folds easily, easy to erect, no tools required, comes in a storage bag for travel
  • Gate doesn't actually open – it's a barrier, dark grey colour stands out, not as sturdy as a regular safety gate

Showing item 1 of 2

travel stair gate mumsnet

A portable and lightweight safety barrier, the Lindam Flexi Gate fits most openings and comes in its own carry bag, making it ideal for travel.

For over 20 years, Lindam, a family run business based in Yorkshire, has been making baby products. Nowadays, Lindam works with companies throughout the world. The Lindam range includes baby monitors , bouncers, that easy-to-recognise curved bottle, a cot, breast pump, food warmer, sterilizers and safety products and gates. Lindam has about 10 or so safety gates in the range, from metal to wooden, easy fit to extendable. I tried the Flexi Gate. This is a collapsible gate – it ‘twists and folds’ into it’s own carry bag. It’s lightweight metal frame, and can fit gaps 71cm to 92cm.

First of all Jack and I tried the Lindam Flexi Gate at the top of the stairs in our fairly standard family house, and it gave me a feeling of fear and Jack a feeling of freedom as he pressed his not insubstantial body against the fabric in the middle – eek! But in a doorway where no stairs are involved we were confident baby Jack was contained. It's also, ahem, stretching the truth to call it a ‘gate’ as it doesn't actually open when in place. To walk through you have to loosen the pressure pads and virtually remove the gate.

What we love

The Lindam Flexi Gate is lightweight and extremely portable, and is great value for money. It’s extremely easy to fit as it is pressure mounted. The gate collapses, twists and folds into a bag the size of a small tent. This mechanism is really neat.

It’s easily adjustable to a range of widths, which is yet another thing that makes it good for travel, as you don’t know the size of doorways where you’re going (unless you really are super organised!).

What to watch out for

This is not a gate, it's a barrier, so don't try and rush through in a hurry. It's not as robust as metal or wooden safety gates, and because it's pressure mounted it needs to be constantly checked to ensure it’s still secure.

Colour-wise it's not the best either as it's grey, which really does make it stand out and would not suit many homes.

Who is the Lindam Flexi Gate best for?

Mobile mums and dads who need a portable safety barrier for holidays.

MadeForMums verdict

The Lindam Flexi Gate is easy to fit and easy to pack away. It’s portable and a useful addition to your holiday equipment. However, it’s not necessarily what you'd want in place in a more permanent setting.

Cuggl Extra Wide Safety Gate

When your little one is on the move, a baby gate or baby playpen will be one of the most useful pieces of nursery kit you’ll buy. Stair gates can stop them from accessing the stairs while they're too small to be up there by themselves. It will also keep your bubba from wandering off where your eyes can’t follow so they stay safe in your home and avoid any bumps to their baby head.

There’s a wealth of safety gate products on the market, so to make your life easier, we've put together some tips on how to choose the best stair gates for baby.

Stair gate safety advice

According to RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents): "Every year there are more than 42,000 Accident and Emergency attendances by the under-five age group resulting from accidental falls on stairs."

In their research into ' Can The Home Ever Be Safe? ', the publication looked at the need to improve safety in the built environment of homes and gardens.

The Society wrote: "RoSPA considers the provision of reinforcement of the wall substructure to ensure the safe fixing of European Standard stair gates should be included in the specification of all new and refurbished homes."

We spoke to Selina Russell, from safety products brand  Fred UK , about the importance of stair gates; who said:  "Stairways, kitchens, bathrooms, fire hearths to name but a few, are areas of the home that pose potential risks for older babies finding their feet and confident toddlers on the move.

"It is important that any access to open stairways and rooms in the home that could be hazardous to young children if left alone, are restricted by installing safety gates. As infants have an innate curiosity and tend to feel the need to explore their surroundings, stair gates enable you to restrict little ones to safe areas in the home."

How to choose the best stair gate for baby

First up, you need to consider the place you’re guarding. You won’t want anything with a step-over bar at the top of the stairs, but they could work fine at the bottom. Is there space for a door to swing open and shut in the space? If not, a retractable gate could be the answer. And you’ll definitely need a gate that you can open and shut with one hand – trust us on this.

The best stair gates for baby

1. hauck baby gate for doors and stairs open n stop, best highly rated stair gate for baby.

Rrp: £ 46.65

Description

The Hauck Baby Gate, Open N Stop is one of the most highly rated stair gates for baby on Amazon. With versatile size options, you can select according to your space, and even add an extender if necessary. Best for the bottom of the stairs, as it comes with a bar at the bottom, it doesn't require drilling as it's a pressure fit mechanism which means an easy installation for you.

One reviewer said: "I have other products from Hauck which I like so I chose this one and it is great! The pressure mechanism means no drills etc and also you can have the wall at different depths (we have a skirting board so the lower half has a different length compared to the top, unlike others where you have to have the top and bottom at the same depth). The self-locking mechanism is really useful and it's easy to open (for adults, of course)." •

  • No drilling required
  • Can fit wide spaces with extension
  • Extension included
  • Bar at bottom could be a trip hazard

2. Munchkin Extending Metal Wall Fix Safety Gate

Best wide stair gate for baby.

Rrp: £ 30.00

If you have a wide opening between rooms, this could be the perfect gate for you. It has no bar at the bottom, which means it could go at the top of the stairs. The easy-close, push-to-shut closing feature allows parents to quickly and easily push the gate closed.

Tested by mum, Louise : "I feel that this Lindam extending safety gate is good value for money. It is essential for those awkward spaces in a home where a standard size gate will not fit. The fact that this gate has no bar at the bottom is brilliant as my three-year-old is constantly tripping over these on standard gates. Very easy for parents to open but I would say near impossible for an inquisitive clever toddler, which is perfect."

  • Easy one-hand opening and two-way opening
  • No trip bar at bottom means less likely for accidents to occur
  • Easy and quick installation

5. Baby Dan Super Flexi Fit Extending Wooden Safety Gate

Best wooden stair gate for baby.

www.online4baby.com

Want a baby gate that looks good while also being super sturdy? Look no further than the Baby Dan Super Flexi Fit safety gate. You can choose the direction the gate opens in and there’s no bottom bar to potentially trip over. Plus, it’s easy to use with one hand, ideal if you’re holding your baby. We love the beechwood finish and that it's FSC-certified too.

One reviewer said:  "Purchased for frequent grandchildren visits and needed a more versatile gate for the top of my stairs. Very good quality but found one of the fittings screw thread was ineffective and delayed completing the installation. In fairness to the company, they were very helpful and sent out a pack of the connections very quickly, so not delayed too long. Installation was a little fiddly and I needed to fix a small wooden packing on the top fixing the wall in order to equal the difference of the bottom fixing due to the large wooden skirting boards I have. The gate is perfect for the angled fitting I needed to make due to a low window on my landing. Once set up it works a treat and the added benefit of it being without a threshold is far safer without potential trips etc. On top of that, it simply unhooks when not needed. Recommended by me if you need something that is sturdy and adaptable."

  • No trip bar
  • Suitable for narrow and very wide openings
  • Made from high-quality beechwood, nice if you fancy something a little different other than just 'white'
  • Double locking feature for extra security
  • Not available in white

6. Lindam Easy Fit Plus Deluxe Safety Gate

Recommended stair gate for baby.

www.argos.co.uk

Shortlisted for  Best Safety Product in the Mother&Baby Awards  in 2015 and 2014. Assembled and ready to install, the Lindam Easy Fit Plus Deluxe safety gate can be installed in just five minutes. All tools are provided and the four-point pressure fit frame means that it does not require drilling to the wall, whilst still providing ultimate strength when in position for complete peace of mind. Parents can easily open and close the gate and the wide walkthrough offers more space as you pass through. The clever pressure indicator provides a visual assurance that the baby gate is installed correctly, creating a safe environment for your little explorer.

One reviewer said:  "Brilliant gate! I read up on reviews before ordering this and it's been excellent. We needed to order a 7cm extension (super easy to install) but once fitted it's doing the job. It took me (on my own) 15 minutes to install from adding the extension to getting out 15-month-old daughter hanging off it in a (failed) attempt to break it down. No screws (just some sticky pads on the walls) and it is as firm as the wall it's attached to. Well worth the money and peace of mind so that our monster doesn't go for a nose diver down the stairs. I recommend getting the gate first and then seeing which extension you might need as it's hard to tell before, due to the added length of the screws."

The Munchkin four point pressure fit frame means that the gate does not require drilling to the wall, whilst providing a solid pressure fitting when in position for complete peace of mind. The clever pressure indicator provides you with visual assurance that the gate is installed correctly, keeping your little explorer safe at all times. The wider walk through is practical as you have more space as you pass through the baby gate, ideal if your hands are full with baby, shopping or holding the washing basket.

Our M&B tester said: "This is a solid design and proves to deter my daughter from trying to open it. We as a family particularly like the extra safety feature at the bottom of the gate, with the double latches that secures the gate in place. This is great for when our daughter tries to pull on the gate, this feature gives further peace of mind."

  • Quick and easy installation
  • Adjusts to fit openings

8. Safety 1st SecureTech Metal Gate

Best budget safety stair gate.

This 73 cm tall child gate can be used to childproof widths from 73 to 80 cm and can be extended up to 136 cm by combining one or more gate extensions. The gate's aesthetic appeal is another positive aspect. It blends well with the surroundings and adds a touch of style to the designated area. This is a welcome change from many baby gates that can be visually intrusive.

Review : "I've been using the Baby Gate for stairs and doorways for about four months now, and overall, it's been a reliable addition to my home. One of its standout features is the ease of installation – no screws or drills are required. This not only makes it convenient but also ensures that it leaves no lasting marks or damage to the walls or door frames.

I opted to place the gate in the doorway leading to the stairs, and for the most part, it serves its purpose effectively. It provides a sturdy barrier that keeps my toddler from venturing up the stairs unsupervised, offering much-needed peace of mind."

  • Can be extended by combining gates
  • No screw installation
  • Self-adjusting
  • Lock can be tricky for some

9. Lindam Sure Shut Porte Pressure Fit Gate

Amazon's choice.

The Lindam Sure Shut Axis safety gate comes with all tools needed for a quick installation. The gate does not require drilling to the wall as it has a pressure-fit U frame to provide high strength when in position for complete peace of mind. The clever pressure indicator provides you with the visual assurance that the gate is installed correctly, keeping your little one safe at all times. The wider walkthrough means you have more space as you pass through the baby gate and with a double lock, even the most determined baby will not be able to open the gate. One review said : "Quite easy to install and provides what appears to be quite a sturdy fit. However, it probably should be thoroughly checked before being put in use, just to ensure the baby doesn't push it over. It's been a few weeks and baby is secure, however, my mum knocked the gate off its hinge by forcing her weight against it. She had no idea how to open it and ended up pushing the whole gate off, but I had it reinstalled within 20 minutes. To be fair, it isn't designed to withstand a grown adult's weight/force. I would recommend this to withstand a baby's advances. However, I am unsure how useful or safe they would be to withstand larger children that are older than 2 years. The handle can prove tricky, and a baby would never be able to open this. Even my mum had trouble figuring it out. The design is also quite neutral so should fit in with any decor."

  • Wide walkthrough
  • Pressure fit U-frame means no drilling required
  • Second lock at base of the gate for extra security
  • A little tricky to open with one hand

10. Callowesse Freedom Hands Free Magnetic Auto Close and Locking Stair Gate

Best stair gate for baby.

Won Gold for  Best Safety Product in the Mother&Baby Awards  in 2022.

The Callowesse Freedom Stair Gate is the only baby stair gate to feature a magnetic locking system. As soon as the magnet in the handle comes into contact with the magnet in the frame, it will automatically lock into place, giving you extra peace of mind when you need it most.

Tested by mum, Jane:  "I love this product so much how did I not know it existed? I cannot begin to count how many times a day I had to remind my husband to shut our old stair gate behind him before this one was installed, now I won’t have to say it ever again! Thank you Callowesse you’ve saved my sanity and possibly marriage."

  • Can be extendable
  • Automatically locks for peace of mind
  • Attachments may be a little fiddly

11. BabyDan 106cm Extra Tall Pressure Fit Gate

Best tall stair gate for baby.

Rrp: £ 66.90

If you’ve got a particularly adventurous toddler, this model’s extra height makes it harder to climb over than standard ones. The opening mechanism is higher too, so you don't have to bend down so far which is better for your back. It is especially good for use with stairs and also great for when your tot gets taller. For most situations, there is no need to screw holes into woodwork or walls unless used at the top of stairs where the mounting cups must be screwed in for added security.

One reviewer said : "These are fab! I love the swing shut function. They are really sturdy and of good quality. They come up to the height of the door handle. My Houdini-child has figured out he can put his foot through the bars and kinda push himself over. It did take him quite a while to figure out, but that's not a negative to the gate. Although a flat panel (no bars) version would be great!"

  • Features a visible indicator showing when the gate is fitted correctly
  • Double locking and extra tall (also making it ideal for pet owners)
  • Pressure mounted installation, so no drilling required
  • Not available in additional colours
  • A little more pricey

12. Fred Pressure Fit Clear View Baby Gate

Best modern stair gate for baby.

www.johnlewis.com

We love the unusual design of the Fred Pressure Fit Clear View Baby Gate. This is the best baby stair gate for modern homes as it has a contemporary acrylic barrier. You will be able to watch over your little one through the crystal-clear screen instead. This solid wall means that your little one won't have any openings to squeeze themselves through. The magnetic slam-shut locking system is child-proof, so you always know your gate is secure.

Review: “Stylish alternative to traditional baby gates, opening up the room. Super quick delivery and great value!”

  • Discreet, modern and almost invisible looking
  • Glass can get dirty quickly (messy fingerprints)
  • Only suitable for use at bottom of stairs

13. Cuggl Extra Wide Safety Gate

Best affordable wide fit stair gate for baby.

For those wide areas, this pressure-fit gate by Cuggl is undoubtedly the answer. For a no-fuss installation that doesn't require any drilling due to its pressure fit feature, this gate is an extremely simple solution. It also includes the manufacturer's one-year guarantee, with included extensions to adapt to your space.

One reviewer said:  "No drilling which is a good thing for something that will probably be temporary. Many options to make it slightly bigger or smaller if you get your measurements wrong!"

  • Can be extended to fit stairs and doorways
  • Can fit wide spaces
  • Affordable price point

Are baby gates safe?

As with everything in life, you’ll need to apply some basic common sense. No step-over bars at the top of the stairs. And the gate will only work if you actually remember to close it. Hey, nothing can be taken for granted after six months of sleep deprivation.

When and how to teach your baby how to go up and down the stairs safely

In comparison to an adult, each stair is a huge step for a small child. When your child is tall enough to manage each step without crawling, take them up and down the stairs whilst holding their hand on the opposite side to the stair rail, whilst they hold the handrail themselves with their other hand. Ensure that they go up/down one step at a time, and slowly. Make sure that you can grab the handrail yourself if one or both of you become unstable.

How often will you use a baby gate?

If your space needs a baby gate, you’ll use it every day. From stopping your tot from crawling upstairs alone and risking an accident to keeping them in one room while you're cooking dinner, safety gates are a lifesaver!

How much money should I spend on a baby gate?

A standard stair gate for babies can cost less than £20. Gates for unusual spaces can cost up to £200.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.
