Styling Tips for Traveling Women Over 50

When it comes to chic travel attire for women over 50 , styling is crucial. Here are some tips to help you create polished and put-together travel looks:

  • Stick to neutrals: When selecting travel outfits, neutral colors such as black, white, and gray are versatile and easy to mix and match. They also hide stains and wrinkles better than bright colors.
  • Add pops of color: While neutrals are a safe choice, adding a pop of color can add some personality to your outfit. Try adding a colorful scarf or statement necklace to your look.
  • Accessorize: Accessories can elevate any travel outfit. A chic hat or sunglasses not only look stylish, but also protect you from the sun.
  • Layer: Layering is an excellent way to create a versatile travel wardrobe. Experiment with layering different textures and colors to add interest and depth to your outfits.
  • Invest in comfortable shoes: Comfortable shoes are a must for any traveler, especially for mature women. Look for shoes that offer support and cushioning, such as sneakers or loafers.
  • Choose the right bag: A well-chosen bag can complete your travel look. Look for a bag that is lightweight, durable, and versatile enough to go from day to night.

By following these styling tips, you can create chic and comfortable travel outfits that reflect your personal style and make you feel confident and put-together during your travels.

Packing Tips for Traveling Light and Stylish

Traveling light is essential for a stress-free journey, but that doesn’t mean sacrificing style. With these packing tips, you can have both!

First, choose versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. Stick to neutral colors like black, gray, and beige for easy coordination.

Invest in packing cubes to keep your clothes organized and wrinkle-free. Use different colored cubes to identify different types of clothing, such as tops, bottoms, and underwear.

Opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics, such as linen and cotton, to stay comfortable during your travels. These fabrics are also easy to care for, so you can wash them in a sink or laundry room if necessary.

Roll your clothes instead of folding them to save space and prevent wrinkles. This technique also allows you to see everything in your suitcase at once for easier outfit planning.

Lastly, don’t overpack! Only bring the essentials and leave room for any souvenirs or items you may pick up along the way.

Comfortable Shoe Options for Mature Travelers

Choosing the right shoes is crucial for comfortable and enjoyable travels. For mature women, finding comfortable yet trendy shoes can be a challenge. Here are some shoe options that combine style and comfort:

Remember, it’s important to break in your shoes before your trip to ensure maximum comfort. Pack blister pads and moleskin in case you experience any discomfort during your travels.

Fabrics and Materials for Travel Outfits

Choosing the right fabrics and materials for your travel outfits can significantly impact your comfort and overall style. As a mature traveler, you want to look fashionable and chic while also prioritizing comfort. Here are some travel-friendly fabrics that you should consider incorporating into your travel wardrobe:

Remember to choose fabrics that are easy to care for and wrinkle-resistant to minimize the time you spend on laundry during your trip. Always opt for versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched, making it easy to create stylish and chic travel outfits.

Layering Techniques for Versatile Travel Outfits

Layering is a key technique for creating trendy and comfortable travel outfits for older women and mature travelers over 50. Layering involves wearing multiple pieces of clothing on top of each other to create a stylish, adaptable look that can easily be adjusted to changing weather conditions and different activities. Here are some useful tips to help you master the art of layering:

Start with a Base Layer

Begin by selecting a comfortable and breathable base layer, such as a lightweight t-shirt or camisole. This layer should be close-fitting and made from a moisture-wicking fabric to keep you cool and dry in warm weather. In colder climates, consider a thermal base layer for extra warmth.

Add a Mid-Layer

The mid-layer adds warmth and can be worn on its own or layered over the base layer. A cardigan or lightweight sweater is a versatile option, or you can choose a stylish blazer for a more formal look. A denim or leather jacket can also add a touch of edginess to your outfit.

Top it Off with a Jacket or Coat

The final layer is a jacket or coat, which provides additional warmth and protection from the elements. A lightweight raincoat or windbreaker is great for a day of sightseeing, while a cozy down parka is perfect for cold winter weather. Choose a jacket or coat that complements the rest of your outfit and is appropriate for your destination.

Bonus Tip: Accessorize with Scarves

Scarves are a fantastic accessory for adding color and texture to your layered outfit. Choose a lightweight, versatile scarf that can be worn in different ways. A silk scarf can add elegance to your outfit, while a warm woolen scarf can provide extra warmth in colder weather.

By mastering the art of layering, you can create fashionable travel outfits for women over 50 that are both comfortable and versatile. Use these tips to create stylish layered looks that adapt to any destination or weather condition.

Accessories: Elevating Your Travel Outfits

Accessories can take your travel outfit from basic to chic in an instant. They are a great way to add personality and style to your look without taking up too much luggage space. Here are some accessory ideas to elevate your travel outfits:

Scarves are versatile accessories that can be worn in many ways. A lightweight scarf can add a pop of color to a neutral outfit, while a thicker scarf can keep you warm on chilly evenings. Try tying a scarf around your neck or wearing it as a headband or belt.

A stylish hat can be both fashionable and functional. It will protect you from the sun and add a touch of glamour to your travel look. Choose a classic floppy sun hat for the beach or a fedora for city explorations.

Statement jewelry can instantly transform your outfit from casual to sophisticated. Opt for chunky necklaces, bracelets, or earrings to add some sparkle and shine to your travel wardrobe.

A belt can cinch your waist and add structure to your outfit. It can also be used to create new looks by adding definition to loose-fitting clothing. Try a wide leather belt over a dress or a skinny belt over a cardigan.

A stylish bag is a must-have accessory for any traveler. Opt for a crossbody or tote bag that is both practical and chic. Look for bags with multiple compartments to keep your essentials organized and easy to access.

With these accessories, you can elevate even the most basic travel outfits. Don’t be afraid to mix and match to create different looks for various destinations and occasions. Remember, a little bit of accessorizing can go a long way in enhancing your travel style.

Travel-Friendly Hairstyles and Makeup Tips

When it comes to travel, it’s important to have low-maintenance hairstyles and makeup routines that can keep up with our busy schedules. As mature travelers, we want to look our best without spending too much time fussing over our hair and makeup. Here are some travel-friendly hairstyle and makeup tips for women over 50:

When choosing hairstyles for travel, it’s best to go for low-maintenance options that can withstand the elements and long hours of sitting. Here are some travel-friendly hairstyle ideas for mature women:

  • The messy bun: This hairstyle is perfect for those early morning flights or when you’re on the go. Simply tie your hair into a loose bun and let the pieces fall where they may for an effortless and chic look.
  • The side braid: A side braid is a classic and practical hairstyle for travel. It keeps your hair out of your face and looks stylish without requiring too much upkeep.
  • The ponytail: A simple ponytail is always a go-to for travel. You can wear it high or low and add a cute scrunchie or hair accessory to dress it up.

Remember to bring along any necessary hair tools and products, such as a travel-sized hairspray or dry shampoo, to keep your hair looking fresh and styled.

For makeup, it’s best to keep it simple and natural-looking. You want to enhance your features without looking overdone or spending too much time in front of the mirror. Here are some travel-friendly makeup tips for mature women:

  • Focus on skincare: The key to looking great without makeup is taking care of your skin. Moisturize regularly and use a hydrating serum or oil to give your skin a healthy glow.
  • Stick to the basics: When it comes to makeup, stick to the basics–a tinted moisturizer or light foundation, a neutral eyeshadow, and a natural-looking lipstick or lip gloss. These products are easy to apply and won’t take up too much room in your luggage.
  • Don’t forget the sunscreen: Protecting your skin from the sun is crucial, even when you’re indoors or in a car. Use a tinted moisturizer or foundation with SPF or apply a separate sunscreen on your face and neck.

Remember to pack your makeup products in a clear, TSA-approved bag to make it through security, and bring along a travel-sized makeup mirror for easy touch-ups on the go.

Section 14: Maintaining Your Style on the Go: Laundry and Packing Tips

Traveling can be tough on your clothes, especially if you’re constantly on the move. But don’t worry, there are ways to keep your stylish outfits looking fresh and clean throughout your journey. Here are some laundry and packing tips for fashion-conscious mature travelers:

1. Pack versatile clothing

The key to packing light and stylish is to choose versatile clothing that can be worn multiple times in different ways. Look for pieces that can be dressed up or down and mixed and matched with other items in your travel wardrobe. This way, you can create a variety of outfits without overpacking.

2. Utilize packing cubes

Packing cubes are a game-changer for staying organized and packing efficiently. Use them to separate your clothing by category, such as tops, bottoms, and dresses. This will make it easier to find what you need without having to unpack your entire suitcase.

3. Choose quick-drying fabrics

Quick-drying fabrics like polyester and nylon are ideal for travel because they dry quickly and are less prone to wrinkles. Avoid packing items made from heavy materials like denim or wool, as they take longer to dry and can be bulky in your luggage.

4. Hand wash when necessary

If you’re staying in a hotel or Airbnb, you can hand wash your clothes in the sink and hang them to dry overnight. Bring a travel-sized container of laundry detergent or use the shampoo provided in your hotel room. This will save you money on laundry fees and ensure that your clothes are always fresh and clean.

5. Use dry cleaning services

If you need to clean delicate items like dresses or suits, use the dry cleaning services provided by your hotel or nearby laundromat. This will ensure that your clothing is properly cleaned and pressed without the risk of damaging it in the washing machine.

6. Pack a small steamer

A small handheld steamer is a great tool for refreshing your clothing and removing wrinkles on the go. It’s lightweight and easy to pack in your suitcase, and will save you from having to iron your clothes in your hotel room.

With these laundry and packing tips, you can maintain your style and keep your travel wardrobe looking fresh and clean throughout your journey. Happy travels!

Essential Pieces for Travel

Packing for a trip can feel like a puzzle, but here are the pieces that will make it all fit together seamlessly. These are the must-have items every woman in midlife should consider for a stylish and comfortable travel wardrobe.

Wrinkle-Free Tops

Who has time to iron while traveling? Forget having the time – who wants to even bother with the iron? Not this girl.

Wrinkle-free tops are a lifesaver. Look for breathable fabrics like cotton blends or tech-savvy materials designed to resist creasing. These tops keep you looking fresh and put-together, whether you’re stepping off a plane or exploring a new city. Plus, they come in a variety of styles – from classic button-downs to chic tunics—so you can mix and match effortlessly.

Versatile Bottoms

Versatility is the name of the game when it comes to bottoms. Pack a pair of well-fitting jeans, some comfy leggings, and a couple of stylish yet functional skirts or slacks. The goal is to have pieces that can be dressed up or down depending on the day’s activities. Think dark wash jeans that go from sightseeing to dinner with ease, or leggings that can double as loungewear.

Comfortable Shoes

Travel often involves a lot of walking, so comfortable shoes are non-negotiable. But comfort doesn’t mean sacrificing style. Opt for cushioned sneakers, supportive sandals, or chic loafers that offer both comfort and flair. Make sure to break them in before your trip to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Your feet will thank you!

Layers for Different Climates

Weather can be unpredictable, especially when you’re traveling between different climates. Layering is your best friend. Start with lightweight, moisture-wicking base layers, add a cozy mid-layer like a cardigan or fleece, and top it off with a versatile jacket. A pashmina or scarf not only adds a touch of elegance but also serves as an extra layer of warmth or even a makeshift blanket on chilly flights.

By including these essential pieces in your travel wardrobe , you’ll be ready for anything your journey throws at you. And remember, the best travel outfits are those that make you feel as good as you look.

Mix and Match Tips

Packing light doesn’t mean sacrificing style – it’s all about being smart with your choices . By selecting a few key pieces and getting creative, you can create multiple outfits that will keep you looking fabulous throughout your trip. Here are some handy mix-and-match tips to help you pack light without compromising on fashion .

Choose a Coordinated Color Palette

Start with a color palette that includes neutral tones like black, white, navy, and beige, then add a few pops of color that complement each other. This way, every piece in your suitcase can be paired with the others, making it easy to put together different looks. Think of it as your travel wardrobe capsule collection.

Pack Versatile Tops

A couple of stylish, wrinkle-free tops in different styles—like a classic button-down, a chic blouse, and a casual tee—can be mixed and matched with various bottoms. For instance, that white button-down can be paired with jeans for a day of sightseeing or dressed up with a skirt for an evening out.

Opt for Convertible Pieces

Convertible clothing items, such as a dress that can be worn as a skirt or a top with removable sleeves, are a traveler’s best friend. These pieces offer flexibility and can be styled in multiple ways, giving you more outfit options without taking up extra space in your luggage.

Accessorize Smartly

Accessories can transform an outfit from day to night or from casual to chic in an instant. Pack a few statement necklaces, scarves, and hats to elevate your look. A belt can also be a game-changer, cinching a dress at the waist or adding structure to a loose top.

Layering is Key

Layering isn’t just practical for different climates; it’s also a great way to create varied looks. A lightweight cardigan can be thrown over a sleeveless dress, or a denim jacket can be paired with almost anything for a casual vibe. Don’t forget a versatile scarf that can double as a shawl or even a beach cover-up.

Play with Patterns and Textures

Mixing patterns and textures can add visual interest to your outfits. Pair a striped top with a floral skirt or mix a silky blouse with denim jeans. The key is to ensure that the colors harmonize, creating a cohesive look that’s both stylish and fun.

By following these mix-and-match tips, you’ll be able to pack efficiently and still have a variety of outfits that suit different occasions and activities. Remember, the goal is to maximize your wardrobe’s potential so you can travel light and enjoy your adventures without worrying about what to wear.

Accessories and Accent Pieces

Ever noticed how the right accessory can turn a simple outfit into something spectacular? That’s the magic of accessories—they don’t just complete your look; they elevate it. We touched on it earlier, so now let’s explore in more detail how you can use scarves, statement jewelry, and stylish hats to add that extra flair to your travel wardrobe.

Scarves: The Ultimate Multi-Tasker

Scarves are the unsung heroes of travel fashion. Not only do they add a splash of color or pattern to your outfit, but they’re also incredibly versatile. You can drape one over your shoulders for some added warmth, tie it around your neck for a chic touch, or even use it as a makeshift blanket on a chilly plane ride. And the best part? They take up virtually no space in your suitcase.

Statement Jewelry: Make Your Outfit Pop

A piece of statement jewelry can work wonders in transforming a basic ensemble. Think bold necklaces, chunky bracelets, or eye-catching earrings. These pieces draw attention and can make even the simplest outfit feel special . Plus, they’re easy to pack and can be mixed and matched with multiple outfits, giving you endless styling options. Just remember to keep it balanced—if you’re going big with the earrings, maybe go lighter on the necklace.

Stylish Hats: Functional and Fabulous

A hat is more than just a sun shield; it’s a style statement. Whether you opt for a wide-brimmed sunhat, a chic fedora, or a cozy beanie, hats can add personality to your look while providing practical benefits. They protect you from the elements and can hide a bad hair day (we’ve all been there). Choose a hat that complements your overall style and you’ll have an accessory that’s both functional and fabulous.

Belts: Cinch and Style

Never underestimate the power of a good belt. It can cinch a dress to define your waist, add structure to a loose top, or provide a polished finish to a pair of trousers . A classic leather belt in a neutral color is a great staple, but don’t shy away from belts with unique buckles or patterns that can serve as a statement piece.

Sunglasses: The Finishing Touch

Sunglasses are an essential travel accessory—not just for protecting your eyes but also for adding a touch of glamour to your outfit. A well-chosen pair can instantly uplift your look. Go for styles that flatter your face shape and consider packing a couple of different pairs to match various outfits and moods.

When it comes to accessories, the key is to choose pieces that you love and that make you feel confident . By incorporating a few standout items like scarves, statement jewelry, stylish hats, belts, and sunglasses, you can effortlessly elevate your travel outfits and ensure you look fantastic, no matter where your adventures take you.

Footwear Choices

When it comes to travel, your choice of footwear can make or break your experience. We all know that sightseeing often involves a lot of walking, so comfort is key. But who says you can’t have style and comfort in one package? Let’s explore some fashionable yet practical footwear options that will keep your feet happy while you’re on the go.

Cushioned Sneakers: Your New Best Friend

Let’s be real—sneakers are a traveler’s best friend. But we’re not talking about your old gym shoes. Gross . Today’s cushioned sneakers come in a variety of chic designs that pair perfectly with everything from jeans to dresses. Look for features like memory foam insoles, arch support, and breathable materials to keep your feet comfortable during long days of exploring. Plus, with the right pair, you’ll be stepping out in style.

Supportive Sandals: Summer Essential

If your travels take you to warmer climates, supportive sandals are a must. Say goodbye to flimsy flip-flops and hello to sandals with sturdy soles and adjustable straps. Brands like Birkenstock and Teva offer options that provide excellent support without sacrificing style. Whether you’re strolling along the beach or touring ancient ruins, these sandals will keep your feet cool and comfy.

Stylish Loafers: Effortless Elegance

Loafers are the epitome of casual elegance. They slip on easily, provide ample support, and can dress up any outfit. Opt for a pair with cushioned insoles and non-slip soles for added comfort. They’re perfect for those days when you want to look polished without compromising on practicality. Pair them with tailored trousers or a flowy skirt, and you’re good to go.

Flexible Flats: Packable Perfection

Flats are another versatile option that can work wonders for your travel wardrobe. Look for flexible, foldable styles that you can easily tuck into your suitcase. A classic ballet flat or a trendy slip-on can transition seamlessly from day to night. Just ensure they have cushioned insoles and a bit of arch support to keep your feet pain-free.

Ankle Boots: The Versatile Staple

Ankle boots might just be the most versatile footwear in your arsenal. They’re perfect for cooler climates and add a touch of sophistication to any outfit. Choose a pair with low heels and padded insoles for maximum comfort. Whether you’re wandering through a European city or enjoying a countryside retreat, ankle boots can handle it all.

Pro Tip: Break Them In

Whatever footwear you choose, make sure to break them in before your trip . Wear them around the house or on short walks to ensure they fit well and don’t cause any discomfort. The last thing you want is to deal with blisters or sore feet when you’re miles away from home.

By selecting the right footwear, you can ensure your travels are both stylish and comfortable.

Destination-Specific Outfit Ideas

Whether you’re jet-setting to a bustling city, lounging on a sunny beach, or exploring the serene countryside, having the right outfit can make all the difference. Here are some destination-specific outfit ideas that blend style and comfort perfectly for women over 50 .

City Break: Chic and Functional

City breaks often mean a lot of walking, sightseeing, and maybe even a bit of shopping. You need an outfit that’s both stylish and functional. Start with a pair of well-fitted jeans or chic trousers. Pair them with a breathable, wrinkle-free top – something that looks crisp but feels comfortable. Layering is key, so bring along a lightweight cardigan or jacket.

For shoes, opt for cushioned sneakers or stylish loafers that can handle hours of exploration. Don’t forget a crossbody bag to keep your hands free and essentials close. Add some flair with a statement scarf or bold jewelry. And voilà, you’re ready to conquer the city streets in style.

Beach Getaway: Relaxed and Breezy

When it’s time to hit the beach , think light, airy, and easy-to-wear pieces. A flowy maxi dress or a comfortable sundress is perfect for transitioning from the sand to a seaside café. Pack a couple of versatile swimsuits that can double as tops when paired with shorts or a skirt.

Comfortable sandals are a must—look for those with arch support to keep your feet happy during long beach strolls. A wide-brimmed hat and oversized sunglasses not only protect you from the sun but also add a touch of glamour. And don’t forget a stylish cover-up or a sarong that can be used in multiple ways. Beach chic has never been this effortless.

Countryside Retreat: Cozy and Practical

Heading to the countryside calls for outfits that are both cozy and practical. Think layers and versatile pieces. Start with comfortable leggings or stretchy jeans that allow for easy movement. Pair them with a soft, breathable top and a cozy sweater or fleece.

A versatile jacket—like a classic denim or a waterproof windbreaker—is essential for those unpredictable weather changes. For footwear, choose ankle boots or supportive walking shoes that can handle uneven terrain. Accessorize with a warm scarf and perhaps a cute beanie for those chilly mornings. Practical doesn’t have to mean boring—mix in some patterns or textures to keep things interesting.

Pro Tip: Be Adaptable

No matter the destination, adaptability is your best friend. Weather can be unpredictable, and plans can change. Ensure you pack a mix of basics and standout pieces that can be layered and styled in various ways. This way, you’ll be prepared for anything, from unexpected rain showers to a surprise dinner invitation.

By tailoring your travel wardrobe to your destination, you’ll not only look great but feel prepared for whatever your adventure brings.

Practical Packing Tips

Packing can sometimes feel like playing an intense game of Tetris, but with the right strategy, you can win every time. Here are some practical packing tips that will help you maximize your suitcase space and keep everything organized for your travels.

Roll, Don’t Fold

Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can save a surprising amount of space and reduce wrinkles. Start with heavier items like jeans and sweaters at the bottom and lighter items like t-shirts and blouses on top. Not only will you fit more in, but your clothes will also arrive looking fresher.

Use Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are a game-changer. They help you compartmentalize your suitcase, making it easier to find what you need without rummaging through everything. Sort your cubes by type of clothing – tops in one, bottoms in another, and so on. It’s like having drawers in your suitcase! I was given a set as a gift from my family and they’re wonderful. It keeps everything organized in your suitcase.

Utilize Every Nook and Cranny

Make use of every bit of space available. Stuff socks or undergarments into shoes to keep their shape and save space. Tuck smaller items like chargers or jewelry into zippered compartments or side pockets. No space should go unused.

Plan Your Outfits

Before you start packing, plan out your outfits for each day of your trip . This helps you avoid overpacking and ensures you have everything you need. Mix and match pieces to create different looks without packing your entire wardrobe. And don’t forget to include a couple of versatile extras for unexpected occasions.

Keep Liquids Secure

To avoid any messy spills, place your liquids and toiletries in clear, resealable plastic bags. Better yet, invest in travel-sized containers and fill them with your favorite products. This not only complies with airline regulations but also keeps everything neat and tidy.

Wear Your Bulkiest Items

If you’re bringing bulky items like a coat or boots, wear them during your travel to save precious suitcase space. Planes are often chilly, so you’ll likely appreciate having that extra layer anyway.

Create a Packing List

A packing list is your best ally in ensuring you don’t forget anything important. Start your list a couple of weeks before your trip and add items as you think of them. Check off each item as you pack it. This way, you avoid last-minute panic and ensure you have everything you need.

Use Laundry Bags

Pack a small laundry bag to keep dirty clothes separate from clean ones. This helps keep your suitcase organized and makes it easier when you get home – you can just toss the laundry bag into the wash.

Limit Shoes

Shoes can take up a lot of space, so try to limit yourself to three pairs: one for walking, one dressy pair, and one casual pair. Choose versatile styles that can be paired with multiple outfits.

By following these practical packing tips, you’ll make the most of your suitcase space and travel more efficiently. Packing doesn’t have to be a headache – a little planning and organization go a long way.

Comfortable Travel Attire Dos and Don’ts

Choosing the perfect travel outfit can feel like walking a tightrope between looking stylish and staying comfortable. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with some practical dos and don’ts to help you strike that balance effortlessly.

Do: Opt for Breathable Fabrics

Comfort starts with the right fabric. Natural fibers like cotton, linen, and bamboo are breathable and keep you cool during your journey. They’re also less likely to irritate your skin when you’re on the move. While they can wrinkle, it might be worth the trade-off for the comfort.

Don’t: Choose Restrictive Clothing

Avoid anything that feels too tight or restrictive. Skinny jeans might look great, but after sitting for hours, they’ll become your worst enemy. Instead, go for relaxed fits that allow freedom of movement.

Do: Layer Like a Pro

Airplanes and trains can be unpredictable temperature-wise. Layering is your best friend. Start with a lightweight base layer, add a cozy sweater, and finish with a versatile jacket. This way, you can easily adjust to changing temperatures.

Don’t: Overlook Footwear

Your feet will thank you for choosing the right shoes. Do go for stylish yet supportive footwear – think cushioned sneakers or comfy loafers. Skip the high heels and flimsy flip-flops, as they rarely provide the support you need for long walks or standing in lines.

Do: Prioritize Stretch and Comfort

Outfits with a bit of stretch (hello, leggings and soft-stretch jeans) are ideal for traveling. They adapt to your body’s movements and help prevent feeling constricted. Just make sure they still look polished enough for any spontaneous photo ops!

Don’t: Forget About Wrinkle-Resistant Pieces

Wrinkles are inevitable, but some fabrics handle them better than others. Pack a few wrinkle-resistant shirts or dresses to ensure you look fresh and put-together, even after a long trip.

Do: Keep Accessories Simple

Travel days aren’t the time for heavy jewelry or complicated accessories. A pair of statement earrings or a stylish scarf can elevate your look without getting in the way. Plus, scarves can double as blankets or pillows in a pinch!

Don’t: Sacrifice Function for Fashion

While it’s tempting to go all out with fashion, practicality should never take a back seat. Avoid outfits that require constant adjusting or special care. You want to focus on enjoying your trip, not fussing over your clothes.

Do: Use a Crossbody Bag

A crossbody bag is perfect for travel—hands-free, secure, and just roomy enough for essentials. Look for one with multiple compartments to keep everything organized. It’s also a stylish accessory that completes your look.

Don’t: Neglect Sun Protection

Whether you’re heading to a sunny beach or a snowy mountain, sun protection is crucial. Pack a chic hat and sunglasses to protect your face. Stylish and functional, they add that extra oomph to your travel ensemble.

By following these dos and don’ts, you’ll master the art of choosing travel outfits that are both stylish and comfortable.

Where to Shop for Your Travel Outfits and Accessories

You may already know exactly where to find the best travel outfits for women over 50, and that’s cool. But, if you’re open to some different resources, here are my recommendations.

Chicos – they offer a wide variety of clothing for women in midlife. I particularly love the Travelers Collection , as you’ll see in the image above. I noticed some beautiful, colorful patterns on the latest styles in the Travelers Collection, so if you enjoy bold colors be sure to check them out!

Quince – You’ll find everything you need at Quince, from clothing to accessories to luggage. They offer higher quality items at reasonable prices, and I have been very happy with everything I’ve purchased from Quince thus far. Check out their Resort Collection . If you want to learn more, Read my review

Measure and Made – I love this company! Having pants, jeans, crops, and skinny leggings that fit my body so well is amazing. I don’t go anywhere without them. Read my review

Kohls – Great prices, of course, at Kohls. I enjoy the variety of brands, and found my Tek Gear activewear there, and wore it for most of my long drive to Florida. I purchased these flare pants and this mesh top .

DSW – shop in the comfort of your own home and choose whether to have your shoes shipped to your home, or pick them up at the nearest DSW store. The variety of styles is awesome!

Shop more brands I love!

The Comfortable Basics Women Over 50 Wear for Travel

As anyone who has ever accidentally worn something uncomfortable to travel in knows, it can make or break your day. I realize that this sounds dramatic, but as someone who used to travel in high-waisted, 100% cotton jeans (I know…), I can vouch. While we regularly cover the excellent airport outfits women of all age groups wear, I strongly believe that women age 50 and up are a great source of non-verbal style advice.

By the time you reach age 50, you've been traveling for decades and have gained plenty of wisdom when it comes to what to wear for any given occasion, travel days included. I studied the airport outfits of stylish women like Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, and Julianne Moore, and noticed quite a few patterns as far as the comfortable basics they wear are concerned. Keep scrolling to learn from their examples and shop the recommended travel basics.

Loose Trousers

If you're anti-jeans and anti-leggings when traveling (I get it), Julianne Moore's loose trousers are the answer. They also just so happen to be a trend right now. The blazer is optional.

On Julianne Moore: Louis Vuitton bag

Reformation + Mason Pants

Ballet Flats

Want something more polished than sneakers but equally comfortable? Follow Nicole Kidman's lead and wear a pair of ballet flats to the airport.

On Nicole Kidman: Zimmermann  Super Eight Ruffle Shirt ($595); Moynat Paris bag

Rothy's + The Mary Jane

While sweatpants may have once seemed sloppy, they're a trend now, and they happen to be J.Lo-approved. (Tip: Wearing a matching sweatshirt adds a bit more polish.)

Nanushka + Planet Cropped Track Pants

Flat Ankle Boots

If you're going somewhere straight from the airport and want to look chic, forgo the sneakers and wear a pair of flat ankle boots as Andie Macdowell did.

The beauty of a cashmere sweater is that it's warm but not bulky. It's truly the perfect thing to wear with jeans, as French actress Isabelle Huppert expertly displayed.

Everlane + The Cashmere Wrap Sweater

You don't have to look like you're going to the gym when you wear leggings to the airport. Just follow Viola Davis' lead and pair them with a wool coat and ankle boots.

Skinny Jeans

Some may scoff at the idea of wearing skinny jeans on a plane, but if you choose a pair with stretch (like Yolanda Hadid did), you won't have any regrets whatsoever.

Updated: 4/29/2024

If your summer vacation is right around the corner and you’re looking to streamline your packing, creating a summer travel capsule wardrobe ensures you have versatile, chic outfits ready for any adventure. Whether you’re taking in stunning coastal views, exploring museums and historical sites, tasting wine, or eating in amazing restaurants, having the right clothes can make all the difference.

In this blog post, I’ll share tips and tricks for putting together the perfect summer travel capsule wardrobe tailored for women over 50 and traveling to a warm destination. I’ll share versatile pieces that travel well in the summer, are comfortable, and easily mix and match so your suitcase is filled with exactly what you want and need to have a great time.  At the end, I’ll show you outfit ideas for all the ways you can style these pieces. Get ready for a ton of outfit pictures!

What is a summer travel capsule wardrobe?

A summer travel capsule wardrobe is a carefully curated collection of versatile clothing items designed to meet all of your needs for a trip without overpacking. With some carefully chosen pieces that you can mix and match, you can make a variety of stylish looks for anything you have on your travel itinerary. Choose comfortable pieces that coordinate well in color and style, such as lightweight dresses, comfy tops, pants, or jeans, and layering pieces like a light sweater or jacket for cooler evenings.

After hearing from so many mid-life women who don’t love wearing shorts, this capsule is centered around dresses, pants, jeans, and flat shoes that are easy for walking.

Start by considering the number of days you’re traveling and the suitcase you’ll be taking. For a 7 to 10-day trip, build your packing list around enough clothes for 7 days. Depending on your suitcase size and whether you’re packing everything in a carry-on suitcase or planning to check your bags, you may be able to add more pieces. Investigate the laundry options at your hotel and plan to wash clothes through the hotel if you’ll be traveling for a long time.

If you’re heading to a warmer destination where temperatures will be at least 70 degrees, dresses are a great choice, especially if you don’t love wearing shorts. Look for lightweight fabrics with natural fibers like linen and cotton. Cotton fabric blends are also a good choice since they are wrinkle-resistant, wick moisture, and dry fast. Blends that include rayon, acrylic, nylon, and polyester are also great options for the same reason.

This capsule includes 4 dresses that transition from day to night, 5 short-sleeve tops with 1 pair of lightweight linen pants, 1 pair of jeans, a layering cardigan, and a denim jacket for cool restaurants or evenings. I include 2 optional items, including a pair of shorts and white jeans, in case they feel more like your personal style.

Since tops get smelly and bottoms are easy to re-wear without washing, you’ll need more tops than bottoms.

I’ve built this capsule around shades of blue, black, and white. Having a color scheme makes it easy to mix and match pieces. Shades of blue are perfect for summer and have a bit more visual interest than a capsule wardrobe full of neutral colors.

Let’s look at the pieces I’m including in this capsule.

Gap Factory Navy and Pink Floral Splitneck mini dress

Fit Note: I’m midsized at 5’6″, 162 pounds, with a 36-B bust, and size 12 jeans.

Here are 4 dresses that can be worn from day to night.

1. Navy and pink floral tie-waist dress (Fits TTS, wearing size medium)

I don’t usually wear dresses with floral patterns, but this one feels playful and effortless. It’s a great choice on a hot day since it’s sleeveless. It has a flattering v-neck and a tie waist to define the middle. At 5’6”, it hits above the knee for me. Made of rayon, it has a silky feel and is wrinkle-resistant. It’s lightweight, cool, and comfy and comes in 6 patterns. I’m wearing it in a medium.

Navy and pink floral tie-waist dress

2. Blue notch-neck swing dress (Fits loose, wearing a small)

A classic navy dress is a great alternative to black for summertime. This one is an unexpected win. The navy with a white wave pattern is so eye-catching. The notch neck draws the eye up to the face. The cap sleeves elongate the arms. The waist cinches in at your natural waist and then opens into a full skirt. This soft knit has a thin lining. It doesn’t wrinkle and is not see-through.

Blue notch-neck swing dress

It’s a great alternative to shorts and hits a few inches above the knee for me.  I’m contemplating trying a medium so it’s a bit roomier across the shoulders with my 36-B bust. That will also make it a bit longer. If you have similar sizing, consider ordering a medium. Update: I tried on a medium, and it makes the skirt wider, but there’s not much difference in the top, so I’m sticking with the small.

This comfy dress will be on permanent rotation this summer, dressed up and down.

3. Black tulip sleeve swing dress (Fits roomy, wearing a small)

You guys, Loft brought back a classic little black dress I bought years ago and loved so much that I couldn’t bear to get rid of it. This is an elevated t-shirt dress with tulip sleeves that aren’t puffy but have overlapping petal-shaped sleeves that add a little something extra to the dress for a stylish look. The skirt is a-line with a swing, so my stomach is completely concealed, and the length hits right above the knee. I’ve tried the new version in the store, and it is an exact replica. Although the fabric content has changed slightly, it’s still an easy-to-wear cotton blend.

Black tulip sleeve swing dress

I’ve worn this dress to work with a blazer, a funeral in a pinch, and like a t-shirt dress with sneakers and a baseball cap on a Saturday. This is the all-purpose dress that you will wear again and again after your trip is over. See how I styled it in 20 Best Black T-shirt Dress Outfit Ideas + Style Tips .

4. Navy and white floral midi dress (Fits TTS, wearing a medium)

This navy floral midi dress is sleeveless with a split neck and a gathered elastic waistband hitting at the slimmest part of your natural waistline. The fabric is a lightweight cotton rayon blend that resembles gauze in that it has a slight texture to the fabric. The dress has pockets and is lined on the bottom with a breathable, lightweight material. This is one you can dress up for a nice dinner or wear with sneakers or slides. The navy and white floral has touches of royal blue and feels elevated.

Navy and white floral midi dress

I’m wearing a medium, and the flowy midi skirt hugs my size 12 hips with a little room. Going up a size would probably make it too big in the bust as a 36-B.

Now let’s look at bottoms. I’m including linen pants and blue jeans. I’m also sharing two optional items, including white shorts and white jeans.

5. White linen pants (Fits loose, wearing a medium in petite length ; Similar straight leg ankle-length pair, fit TTS )

I debated whether to include lightweight linen pants or white shorts here. I love the comfort of pull-on pants, especially after a long flight. I’ve heard from many midlife women who don’t love wearing shorts, so I included shorts as an alternate option below. If wearing white pants worries you for traveling, carry a stain pen. Also, be careful when you’re eating chocolate. Those little crumbs melt right into the fabric.

These Old Navy wide-leg linen pants look best with the shirt untucked, which hides the elastic waistband and creates a more streamlined look.

White linen pants

Update: I’m wearing them in a petite length, so they hit my ankle at 5’6″. The petite length is sold out, so I’m linking a straight-leg pair of linen pants from J.Crew Factory . They fit TTS. I’m including a picture of them below in a blue and white stripe that’s now sold out. The white color is available at the time of publication.

6. Blue denim kick crop jeans (Fit TTS, I’m in a 31, aka 12)

It’s a good idea to pack a pair of jeans in the event of cold weather or a rainy day. Kick crop jeans are a fresh and modern alternative to skinny jeans. They’re still slim fitting in the hips and thighs, but they have a cute flare below the knee and are ankle length at 5’6”. As someone who wears size 12 jeans, I love how the flare provides balance to my triangle body type with a larger rear. These Loft kick crop jeans are a new purchase, and they are insanely flattering. Somehow, they make my legs look like they go on for days. They’re soft, and have so much give for comfort. The wash is a bit lighter for summer, and the hem is finished, giving a more polished look.

Blue denim kick crop jeans

7. Optional Item: White kick crop jeans (Fit TTS, wearing size 31)

These high rise kick crop jeans are some of my favorites. The rise is 11-inches and the slightly flared crop raw hem balances wider hips and shows off your shoes.

White kick crop jeans

8. Optional item: White shorts (Fit slightly big, wearing my true size 12 for a roomier fit)

I’m not a big shorts person, but these are my go-to when I do wear them. They have a longer 6-inch inseam without being Bermuda shorts. These are the curvy fit for my size 12 hips. They are slightly roomy in my true size. I also own them in a size down for a more exact fit.

white shorts

Let’s look at tops to pack!

9. White notch-neck flutter sleeve top (Fits TTS, I’m in a small)

I love this top instead of a basic white t-shirt. It’s elevated with a flattering v-neck with contrast cotton flutter sleeves with cutout detail. When I first saw this shirt hanging in the store, the sleeves looked puffy, but a quick steam took care of that. This is a shirt you can dress up or down. It’s longer in length and flowy, so I like to front-tuck it. Substitution: If you prefer, pack a white tank top if it feels more like your personal style.

White notch-neck flutter sleeve top

10. White and blue striped boatneck tee (Size up since it fits small and straight. I’m in a medium)

You know I love a striped shirt for visual interest. Since my bottom half is larger than my top, the horizontal stripes and the boatneck help to create balanced proportions between my bottom and top half. I’m obsessed with this royal blue stripe. It’s so fresh for summer. It also comes in a dark navy. This shirt is cut fairly straight and is easy to leave untucked if you prefer. I’m wearing a medium.

White and blue striped boatneck tee

11. Black wedge tee (Relaxed fit, wearing XS)

This black shirt is a great alternative to a standard t-shirt. The cap sleeves cut across the arm at a higher spot creating a flattering and elongating effect on the arms. This is another shirt that you can easily wear untucked if you prefer.

Black wedge tee

12. White and navy striped tee (Fits TTS, wearing a medium)

A striped tee is a great option for adding visual interest to a simple outfit. This white and navy striped tee is another casual option of a classic tee for when you want to be more dressed down.

White and navy striped tee

13. Gray t-shirt (Fits TTS, wearing a medium)

I love a light gray t-shirt as an alternative to white for everyday wear. This is a basic tee and another casual option for a more casual itinerary.

Gray t-shirt

14. Denim jacket (Fits big, wearing large for a looser fit)

If you want a light layer for air conditioned spaces, a denim jacket is the perfect length with dresses and also works with pants. This is a lighter blue wash and works so well with this color palette. It is slightly oversized for a casual look. You could also take a jacket with a hood if your destination is rainy.

denim jacket

15. Gray crewneck cardigan sweater (Similar linked fits TTS)

A gray crewneck cardigan is a more elevated option as a layering piece that works with all the dresses, tops, and jeans. A hip-length cardigan helps to define the waistline of a dress. In this outfit, I love the combination of gray, black, and cognac brown. It feels so rich.

Gray crewneck cardigan sweater

16. Brown bay slides (Fits TTS, wearing size 9)

These brown slide sandals are an elevated alternative to flip flops that you can wear to the pool or a winery and with shorts or a long dress. They’re super versatile and comfortable.

Brown bay slides

17. Tretorn sneakers (Fits slightly roomy in the toe-box, I prefer my true size 9)

These canvas Tretorn sneakers are flexible, lightweight, breathable, and easy to wear for moderate walking of less than 10,000 steps.

If you’re walking more than 10,000 steps for several days in a row, choose your favorite running shoe with a cushioned insole and your perfect amount of arch support.

When it comes to sizing, I own them in my true size and a half size down. Both fit but I prefer the roominess in the footbed of my true size. The smaller size can rub on the toes and heel. Wear them with no-show socks that come above your heel with a heel tab . A white pair of socks will blend in, so you barely notice them. Break them in at home first to ensure they work for your foot shape and have the comfort you need when traveling.

Tretorn sneakers

My pair came with striped and white laces. I love how the gum sole matches the brown of the bag. They look great with navy.

18. Two-strap slide sandals (Fits TTS, I’m wearing my usual size 9)

These canvas and rubber slides are a knock-off of two-strap Birkenstocks that require no breaking-in period. The rubber insole is super comfortable; you can wear it with a swimsuit or dress. The canvas body with gold buckles gives them a more elevated look than your standard leather Birkenstocks. You’ll be happy to have them when you want an easy alternative to sneakers.  They’re my go to easy shoes for running around town.

Two-strap slide sandals

19. Brown leather belt bag

When you’re sightseeing, a hands-free bag is a must. I prefer a belt bag to a crossbody because everything important stays securely right in front of your body. This is slim and hugs the body with space for your phone, sunglasses, and a small wallet. It’s made of thin pebbled leather and has an adjustable strap. The shape and clasp give it an equestrian vibe that I love.

Brown leather belt bag

20. Optional: Brown faux woven tote bag

I’m including an inexpensive brown woven tote bag because you don’t have to worry about getting gelato on it or scratching it up. It’s super lightweight, rolls up in your bag, and takes little space. From time to time, you may want a tote bag if you’re going shopping or want to carry a ton of snacks and a light water bottle. If you carry a lot of stuff daily, go for a travel backpack instead to be hands-free.

Brown faux woven tote bag

21. A baseball cap

A classic summer outfit for me includes a baseball cap for shade. Anytime I’m out in the sun walking for an extended period, I wear a hat. This Paris hat from Anthropologie is my absolute favorite. It’s chic and perfect for a bad hair day or when it’s misting out, and I don’t want to carry an umbrella or wear a hood. This one snaps open and closed, and I hang it from my belt bag if I’m not using it. It adds a chic, sporty look to any outfit.

A baseball cap

22. Optional: A woven fedora (Similar linked)

A woven fedora is a stylish alternative to a baseball cap for a little bit of shade. It’s light and comfortable to wear when it’s hot out.

A woven fedora

23. Optional: Reversible belt

This Amazon reversible belt is a bestseller and gives you two color options, which is great when you’re traveling.

Reversible belt

24. Gold bauble necklace and gold coin necklace

This inexpensive gold statement necklace elevates simple outfits for day or night. Wear it alone or layer it with a gold coin necklace like I do here.

shoes for travel

Importance of Shoe Selection

The first and most important thing to consider when building your travel capsule wardrobe is…the shoes. We have to cover these first because they will determine the outfits we’re building throughout the rest of this post! The key to the perfect travel capsule is to minimize what you’re bringing and to make sure that everything you pack mix and match together. Consider your shoes as an anchor for your travel wardrobe. Starting with shoes will help you narrow down your outfit choices and plan practical, stylish outfits more easily. I recommend three pairs of neutral, versatile shoes. I recommend you pack a pair of sneakers, flats, and wedges or heeled shoe. Throughout this post, you will see these three pairs of shoes styled with every outfit… (BTW, for those that don’t like or can’t wear heels, swap the heels for another pair of flats.)

minimal travel capsule

Dolce Vita Sneakers

Instead of a basic pair of running sneakers, consider wearing elevated sneakers like this pair by Dolce Vita. They have cool stitching throughout and actually look very similar to my Chloe sneakers that I wear all the time…but are just as comfortable and a fraction of the price! They’re a very neutral, versatile, wearable off-white color, super comfortable, and have a small platform (1 1/2 inches) for some added height which I love .

dolce vita braided sandals

Dolce Vita Braided Flat Sandals

For a travel capsule wardrobe, you should look for a pair of flats in your skin shade that has a little extra design detail that makes them more stylish. These Dolce Vita flats are close to my skin tone and have a pretty braided detail. The braiding makes them even more stylish without compromising fashion or function. They are also easy to get on and off.

dolce vita braided wedges

Dolce Vita Wedges

Next, you’ll want a pair of wedges or heeled sandals for dinners or when you want to feel a little more dressed up. These wedges are also by Dolce Vita, easy to get on and off, super comfortable, and they color is so neutral that they’ll go with everything!

White Tank & White Jeans Travel Capsule Wardrobe

White Tank & White Jeans

The white tank had a resurgence in 2022 and it’s still going strong. White tanks have never been out of style, but they’re even more popular now than ever. Plus, it’s a wardrobe basic you’ll wear beyond travel especially for layering. In the outfits above, I’m wearing a white tank by Evereve that’s SO good. It has thick enough straps that are set out a little further on the shoulder so you can still wear a regular bra with it (big win!). I paired it with some white jeans by Good American that are cropped (perfect for petites!), aren’t see-through, and are very comfortable. They run a little small, so I’d order up one size. You can see that they work perfectly with the sneakers, flats, and wedges too!

Sizing: All of the pieces in this capsule run true to size except the white jeans and the denim skirt (below).

What Bottoms to Pack for Travel

What Bottoms to Pack for Travel

A quick note about what bottoms you pack for travel … another anchor for your travel wardrobe is your bottoms, just like shoes. This means that everything you pack for your next trip should work around your shoes and your bottoms. In this capsule, I’m featuring a pair of white jeans, a denim skirt, and black wide-leg pants. But in your travel capsule, you might include or add light-wash jeans, denim shorts, a flowy skirt, and/or white wide-leg pants…or whatever you prefer. These are simply meant to give you an idea of how your travel capsule can/should work!

Black Tank for travel

Black Tank & White Jeans

Next up is a black tank by LNA that’s very soft, lightweight, and breathable. It’s super easy to throw on with whatever bottoms you’ve packed and feel stylish, put-together, and comfortable. It has a cool cutout detail at the chest, a ribbed fabric, it’s sleeveless and you can wear a regular bra! This is perfect for those super hot travel activities you have planned. I paired it with the same white Good American jeans and all three pairs of shoes. We’ll be repeating this formula to show you just how versatile each piece is and to give you ideas on how to put together your travel capsule. These first two looks are very casual and would be perfect for running errands, sightseeing, lunch, etc.

By the way, we also posted a video over on YouTube if you want to see these outfits in motion you can find that here .

Travel Capsule Wardrobe

White Tee & White Jeans

Next up is this cool Nation LTD tee. I own a few tees from this brand and love the design details they add that make them look more like blouses. They elevate a look more than a normal white tee and are much more fashion-forward. This tee has a subtle puff sleeve, ruching in the front, and a flattering v-neckline. I styled the tee half-tucked into the white jeans with a brown belt but  you could easily leave it untucked too. By the way, if you don’t love puff sleeves, Nation LTD makes so many amazing elevated t-shirt options. You can look at other styles here .

Travel Capsule Wardrobe for women

White Eyelet Top & White Jeans

This white eyelet top by Evereve is a beautiful, high-quality piece that’s perfect for your summer wardrobe. I love the pretty eyelet details, the subtle puff sleeves, the breathable and lightweight cotton, and the length! The hemline is short enough so you can leave it untucked and it’ll still look polished.  The top could also double as your swimsuit coverup, which is a packing pro tip! 😉 I styled the top again with the white jeans and all three pairs of shoes. See how versatile these shoes are? The exact top is no longer available, but I linked a similar one below.

Blue & White Striped Top & White Jeans

Next up is this blue and white striped top by LNA. I love how classic and versatile this piece is and I know I’ll wear it all summer long. One of my favorite things about this top is that there’s a button at the sleeve that allows you to raise the sleeve without actually cuffing it, which is really lovely and looks very cool. At the hemline, you can cinch it and tie it to give it a cool bubble hem look. But I cinched it, tied it, and tucked it into the same white jeans and sneakers, flats, and wedges.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Printed Blouse & White Jeans

Farm Rio is a brand I’ve fallen in love with! They make vibrant, beautiful prints in amazing high-quality fabrics… and the fits are amazing. This blouse is bold and beautiful, feels very summery and tropical, but is also very wearable. The neckline and sleeves are very flattering and forgiving. It’s also 100% cotton and very lightweight so even though it has long sleeves, it’s very breathable. (While the exact top is no longer available, I’ll link some similar options below.) I’m wearing it with the white jeans and really love this combination of the bright colors against the white. And of course…I added the brown belt and styled it with the sneakers, flats, and wedges. Are you seeing the pattern here? 😉

Black Pants different outfits

Black Pants

I wanted to give you another bottoms option that wasn’t a pair of jeans, so I’m styling a pair of black, wide-leg pants by Evereve. They are a super lightweight, sporty fabric, they have pockets, and they’re very comfortable. They have the feel of yoga pants but the look of smart, stylish trousers. These pants run a little long on me (I’m 5’4”) but you can see how they look with the sneakers and the wedges above. I styled them with 5 of the 6 tops which shows just how versatile they are! The exact pair is no longer available, but you’ll see another great pair of similar black trousers linked below. Swapping the shoes can also completely change the dressiness of these pants. You can also see in the last two looks that styling the pants with the black tank and simply changing the shoes from sneakers to wedges really elevates it and makes it a dressier look you could wear to a nice dinner.

agolde denim skirt

White Tank & Mini Skirt

As I mentioned above, your capsule wardrobe can include whatever bottoms you prefer. You can even add a few extra bottoms like a skirt, denim shorts, or light-wash jeans. But for this travel capsule, I’m sharing this Agolde denim mini skirt. When I first ordered this, I wasn’t sure if I’d like it…but as it turns out… I LOVE it! It’s more comfortable than denim shorts, it has a cool pointed hemline, and I love the fit. I did size up one size and it fits perfectly. You can wear this skirt with pretty much anything this summer. First, I’m wearing it with the white tank, which is something that’s a little more youthful and shows a lot of skin, but you can easily add a cardigan or lightweight blazer to add coverage. I’d wear this on really hot sight-seeing days!

Black Tank & Mini Skirt

Black Tank & Mini Skirt

Next up is the black LNA tank with the fun cutout styled with the denim shirt. I love the combination of the black tank with the brown belt…yes, you CAN wear black and brown together! It’s a beautiful color combo you shouldn’t shy away from. And again…this look is fabulous with the sneakers, wedges, and flats!

White Tee & Mini Skirt

White Tee & Mini Skirt

The denim skirt also works with the Nation LTD white tee AND the sneakers, wedges, and flats.

White Eyelet Top & Mini Skirt Travel Capsule Wardrobe

White Eyelet Top & Mini Skirt

Next, the white eyelet top. You can easily tuck this into the denim skirt for an effortlessly cool look. If you’re worried about getting hot, wear the white tank underneath and open up the top for even more breathability.

Striped Top & Mini Skirt Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Blue & White Striped Top & Mini Skirt

This striped top also works so well with the denim skirt! I love this combination so much because of the juxtaposition of the more masculine shirt and the feminine skirt. It’s such a gorgeous combination! Style it with the sneakers for a long day of walking, with the sandals for a casual lunch when you want to feel comfortable, or the wedges for a dressier lunch or when you just want to feel a little more elevated.

Printed Blouse & Mini Skirt Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Lastly, I’m wearing the printed Farm Rio dress with the mini skirt, brown belt, and all three pairs of shoes!

Black Jumpsuit travel looks

Black Jumpsuit

I wanted to share a piece you can bring with you on your trip that will easily transition from day to night and feels a little dressier. This black Evereve jumpsuit is something you could wear to a dressier dinner. It’s SO good. The top fits snugly so you will feel very secure, and you don’t have to do any yanking or pulling. You tie it at the back and you’re good to go…you don’t even have to wear a bra! The fabric is ruched and thick enough at the top, so you feel very covered up. But it’s still very soft on the skin, lightweight, and breathable. Plus, it’s very wrinkle-resistant, a must for travel. The bodice is fitted, which is a great contrast to the flowy bottoms. The best part about this jumpsuit is the hemline…because it’s a little shorter, I can wear it with sneakers during the day and swap my shoes with the wedges for a dressy, sexier look at night. The newest version of this jumpsuit has bra-friendly straps and all the same flattering features. Linking it below!

Printed Midi Dress travel outfit

Printed Midi Dress

The last piece is this gorgeous dress by Farm Rio. It’s a bit of a wild card but I love to throw one special piece like this into my suitcase whenever I travel. It’s important to have a piece that you’re excited to wear and that makes me feel happy and beautiful. The beautiful thing about this dress is that you can wear it from day to night and with all three of the shoes I’ve featured. I love the fun, vibrant print, the flattering empire waist, and adjustable tie shoulder straps. It’s also smocked in the back, so you have some room and it’s very comfortable. The fabric is 100% cotton so it’s lightweight and breathable, perfect when you want a flowy, breezy look for your hot summer vacation.

Jewelry & Accessories for travel

Jewelry & Accessories

My approach to jewelry and accessories during travel is to bring impactful pieces that aren’t too over the top. In all of these looks, I’m wearing two pieces of jewelry by Gorjana. The first is this cool chain necklace that packs just the right amount of punch. The second is a pair of classic gold hoops , which you really can’t go wrong with! I also showed a brown belt with most of the looks. It’s a simple way to add polish and style to every outfit. Because the rest of the travel capsule is so minimal, you will have space in your suitcase to add more jewelry if you want. I would probably also add a few bracelets, another pair of more glam earrings, and a statement necklace.

I would also add two pairs of sunglasses, one black and one brown pair. Also, make sure that one is a more glam option (like oversized square frames) and one is sportier (like aviators). If you have the room, I’d definitely add a dress or two, maybe an extra pair of shoes, a hat, and some extra bottoms options. But, again, if you want to keep things minimal, this is plenty! And, as I said above, you’ll even have room for shopping!

Thank you for this post and video. I really like that you showed how each item mixed and matched with each other. Most of the time I find my capsule boring, but adding that pop of color in the colorful blouse nod the blue pinstripe shirt gives a wide variety of looks. I’ll be going to a destination wedding next month in Prague, Czech Republic and later a river cruise to a few Eastern European countries. I’m looking into my closet to see what I can come up with. I think this may be the best packing I’ll do for a trip. I’ll have to wait until August to see what the weather will be like. You have given me some wonderful ideas!

I’m so glad this was helpful for you, Liana! Those pops of color do make such a difference when packing a very well curated capsule. Best of luck as you prepare for your upcoming trip!! ~Erin xo

Finally a practical stylish travel capsule! Yes Molly, you can wear white pants-Tide Stick! Plus you have a back up of black pants. I just returned from 2 months travel with one carry on. Shoes are always the toughest packing bulk. I cheat with a small foldable shoe bag packed away. I then wear the bulkiest shoes-booties or my tennis shoes-into my backpack that goes under the seat. Hotel shower caps are the perfect shoe cover! You’re welcome! Thank you Erin for the great looks! Using this as my template next trip!

All great tips, Arlee! So glad this post will be helpful for your next trip!! Hope you had a great time on your recent trip! ~Erin xo

This is a great starting point for packing for a summer trip. Which combination would you wear on the plane and what outerwear/layer would you bring? It’s always cold on the plane, in restaurants and it isn’t always 80degrees and sunny.

I’ve got a whole video specific to “Travel Day” coming in a few weeks that will cover all of these details better, but I’d go with the sneakers (always wear your biggest/heaviest shoes on travel day – plus they are comfy!) black pants, and black tank with a jacket or blazer as a third layer as well. I’d definitely add one jacket to this list to have the cooler temps/ AC covered! ~Erin xo

I can’t imagine keeping all of that white clean during travel especially the pants. My life style means more kid friendly/dirt resistance. I love the look of white on white. Just super impractical.

I hear this a lot – but I really never have a problem with stains on the white pants! I love to wear them while traveling and will just spot clean anything right away if I do have a spill. BUT…you should always adjust style tips to fit YOU best! Thanks for reading, Molly! ~Erin xo

Great ideas, but I feel that 18 outfit ideas that all go with 3 pairs of shoes would be a better description.

Appreciate your feedback, Jenn. Hope this gives you some great ideas for your next trip! ~Erin xo

Thanks for this! I’m using your Africa packing trip for a trip I am taking on Saturday to Peru to climb the Inca trail to Machu Picchu (I will NOT be wearing those ugly Merrill hiking boots–Sam Edelman combat boots for me :-)). Long time watcher of your YouTube channel-thanks!

Clever Capsule Wardrobe: Stylish Travel Clothes for Women Over 50

Capsule Wardrobe Travel Clothes for Women

I know that for most of us, travel isn’t in the cards right now. With the recent spike in cases, most of us have resigned ourselves to the fact that if we didn’t make a quick trip earlier this summer, we probably wouldn’t have the opportunity to travel to destinations unknown for a while longer. But darn it, that doesn’t mean we can’t dream about it and plan ahead. Because as bleak as things might have seemed over the last year, there’s going to come a time when Covid isn’t at the top of our conversation list.

I decided to look ahead to future times when I get to pack a bag and hit the road. I began to daydream about where I’d like to go and what adventures I’d like to experience. That got me reminiscing about my favorite trips that I’ve been on in the past. One lifelong highlight was a family vacation cruising to Costa Maya and Belize. Now, I am not sure how many of you have ever cruised before, but if you have- you know how small the rooms can be. Even the cruise staff crack jokes about it, and with 4 of us to a cabin, plus all our luggage and its contents, you can only imagine the tight fit.

The funny thing is, on this particular ship, the bathrooms were quite spacious! My point of all this is it got me thinking that although travel is fun and relaxing, packing and what to wear can be a real source of frustration. We all want comfort and function in our travel clothes, but they need to still be fashionable, or at least look halfway decent in all those vacation photos. So, unless you travel Downton Abbey style, butler included, you are schlepping and packing your luggage yourself.

Capsule It!

Building a capsule wardrobe is one of the best ways to save space, lighten your luggage load, and still look great. Creating clothing capsules is a clever and easy way to travel with fashion versatility. Once you get the idea of how capsules work, you’ll be able to plan your style and function around them and give yourself tons of options. Best of all, you’ll save space in your luggage for all the shopping you will do on your trip!

A capsule is a group of 5-12 pieces that work in combination with each other.

Travel Capsule

If your travel wardrobe is too cluttered, cleverly use the formula below to help pair it down, which will also make deciding what to wear so much easier.

Tips to Capsule Travel Clothes for Women Over 50

1. start packing 1-2 weeks before your trip..

This gives you plenty of time to create your wardrobe and map out when you might be wearing each outfit. I personally will jot down each outfit for each day or activity. This is the key to not overpack. Look at your itinerary and plan accordingly.

We love the Pack This! Pad, from Knock Knock, $7, to be able to visualize your needs easily.

Knock Knock Pack This Pad

2. Packing for changing temperatures can be bulky, so unless you are heading to a cold-weather destination, my favorite piece to pack to ward off a chill is a cashmere wrap.

It packs lightly, can keep you warm, especially if you layer, and it doubles as a modesty piece that you can wear to cover your shoulders when visiting cultural churches, temples, or other sacred places.

JCREW Oversized Cashmere Wrap

3. Take 1 medium/large carry-on tote with essentials such as a book, electronics, I.D., and other items you do not want to chance left in your checked luggage, and a small crossbody bag that you can use as your day bag on your sightseeing excursions.

This way, you can leave your larger bag in the hotel and only carry the bare minimum out and about for the day. The smaller crossbody can double for your wallet in the larger tote.

Madewell Medium Transport Tote

4. Let’s talk neutral shoes, as these little beauties are essential to a great trip.

Shoes are necessary for every vacation, but they can take up a lot of space in your luggage – and comfort is a must! I opt for shades of neutral, specifically nude, so they go with everything, or you can do a pop of color if you are keeping your outfits neutral. For the heel-loving ladies like me, the best bet is a wedge, as they can easily pair with dresses, shorts, or pants. Nude or black walking wedges  and Gladiator Wedges are two great choices. If flats are more your style, then look for something that can easily transition from your all-day outfits to dresses for your evening dinner. This pointy toe Vionic flat makes a great choice, and with so many colors and space-saving styles, you can easily fit a few pairs in.

Madewell Sidewalk Low-Top Sneakers in Leather

5. Lastly, choose pieces from your travels that you love to be in and that are comfortable.

Think of items you would wear at home. While I’m traveling, I love to find shawls and pashminas or a unique piece of jewelry as a useful memento of my trip – it saves space in my luggage on the way there, it is an easy keepsake to bring home. It is also something you can wear back home to remember your trip.

How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe

  • 1 x Jacket/Cardigan/Pashmina
  • 4 x Pants/Skirts/Shorts
  • 8 x Tops (includes t’s for layering)
  • Stay neutral, so they go with each outfit. I love nude or tan shoes.
  • Accessories are a great way to change up your capsule, and they don’t take up a lot of space, so have fun here!
  • Don’t forget to add other essentials such as swimwear , workout wear , coat, or even gloves depending on your destination/weather.
  • Substituting a dress instead of a top or bottom will reduce the total number of outfits. You may want to add a dress in as an additional piece to increase your variety, but remember it must work with the jacket/cardigan.
  • Look to find a common color in patterns, so mixing is easier. Bottoms in shades of neutral such as black, navy, or tan can go with everything. Each piece should be able to be mixed and matched with at least 3 other pieces in your packed wardrobe (except for the accessories).

While an actual trip might not be on the near horizon, sale opportunities are on the way. As you think about what you’d pack in a travel capsule wardrobe, you might find that there are some gaps in your options. Take advantage of upcoming Labor Day sales or even look ahead to Black Friday for the chance to fill the gaps while saving some money. It never hurts to plan ahead and even allow yourself to dream of sitting beach-side somewhere, sipping a tropical drink.

Best Comfortable and Chic Travel Outfits for Women Over 50

March 22, 2023 By Cindy Hattersley 46 Comments

I want my travel clothes to be stylish, but I also like to pack pieces that I can wear multiple ways many times to create different looks . Travel outfits in my opinion should be as wrinkle resistant as possible with the ability to layer. Let’s talk about the Best Comfortable and Chic Travel Outfits for Women Over 50.

What to Pack

If you take a few black and white pieces, add your favorite pop of color, and fun accessories you can easily create a travel wardrobe that fits in a carry on for a five-seven day trip. I would shoot for taking two pairs of shoes and maybe a pair of sandals or flip flops depending on the time of year. Sneakers apparently are “de rigueur” with everything these days. I have linked all available items or similar at the bottom of the post.

COMFORTABLE CHIC TRAVEL OUTFITS OVER 50

I would take the five organic terry pieces that I featured in my post How to Make Sweatpants Look Chic Over 50 and add two key pieces from Alembika, the Kylie Jacket and their Iconic Stretch Jeans. You can use the code CINDY20 for 20% off .

A lembika sent me this great Kylie jacket and I am in love! I am wearing it with their iconic stretch jeans , gelato sneakers , (I buy mine locally at shoe tree Paso Robles) michael stars tee ,and an older MJ Wallace bag. This jacket is wrinkle resistant and could be styled numerous ways. I would wear this on my travel days without jewelry so you can clear airport security easily.

cindy hattersley in travel friendly Alembika Jacket & Pants

The Kylie jacke t is great for layering. You could also add a scarf or a cashmere wrap for extra warmth on the plane. It could also be worn as a dress during your stay with sneakers or dressed up with a pair of flats.

When Alembika suggested these iconic stretch jeans I wasn’t sure about them. She said they are one of our best sellers. Yael the owner designer said I think you will love them. She was right. The fabric is flattering, forgiving, and comfy. They have enough weight to keep you warm on the plane but are lightweight enough to be worn like this on a warmer day.

I am wearing my favorite Michael Stars t-shirt in white here with the iconic jeans. I like this Michaels Stars tee because it has 3/4 sleeves, a much more flattering length for women my age.

Alembika Iconic Stretch Jean-travel outfit-cindy hattersley

Here I styled the Kylie jacket with a red Michaels Stars tee and the Eileen Fisher organic cotton terry crops that I love. The huge pockets are big enough to hold an ipad! I normally try to wear the same thing going and coming when traveling. I would wear which ever pair of pants were less for the wear!

Alembika Jacket, Eileen Fisher pants-cindy hattersley

All of these Eileen Fisher french terry items (except for the long jacket below) are on sale so now is a good time to pick them up. I know many of you have and love them. If our weather was more normal for this time of year, I would be living in these pieces.

cindy hattersley in Eileen Fisher terry

Here I am wearing the Eileen Fisher Organic Terry Pants & Sweatshirt with a linen scarf. You could easily add a lightweight cotton or Cashmere shawl as well .

cindy hattersley wearing eileen fisher black terry and a linen scarf

My friend Wren featured here on Ageless Style, turned me on to these Olukai sneakers . She said she wore them all over Europe. They are great for Summer because they are perforated and the backs can also be worn down if you are prone to blisters.

cindy hattersley in eileen fisher french terry

Here is an example of how you can “dress up” sweats. If I were on a 5 day trip I would probably not bring these leopard mules although they don’t take up much space. I would replace them with a pair of birdies that could be worn with the Alembika Kylie jacke t as a dress for dinner out. This fun horn jewelry is lightweight and takes up little space. My pair of sunglasses are from Specs by Kyla in Atascadero. from Alba Optics . These are super lightweight and would be great for travel.

cindy hattersley in eileen fisher french terry

I have really become fond of the crossbody/ waist bag. Although I never carry them on my waist. I have the Athleta Excursion bag in black and I carry it nearly everyday. It is big enough for a small bottle of water, sun glasses and wallet. It also comes in pink and white if black is too boring for you. This price-friendly old navy sweatshirt and amazon sweatpants could be substituted for the Eileen Fisher if price is a concern. The amazon pants have good reviews and the old navy sweatshirt is a favorite of mine. You can tuck in a pair of yoga pants or leggings easily as well for hiking, workouts and walks.

SHOP THE POST

If you are packing for a five-seven day trip the key is to keep your travel capsule wardrobe simple, so it will all fit in your luggage. A neutral color scheme is best. I added in a pop of color for fun. I kept the jewelry and accessories simple. If you were traveling on a business trip you would need to substitute some skirts or dresses or a blazer. A swimsuit could be added if there will be a pool. This trip is meant to be a short casual trip so keep the packing list simple. You can always add a sweater or two, and scarves take up very little space.

Thank you for reading the Best Comfortable and Chic Travel Outfits for Women Over 50. What are your best traveling outfits? Do you have some go to items that you consider your best travel clothes? Are both style and comfort important to you when traveling on vacations? Let’s get this conversation going.

Just a note to readers that I held my breath and ordered the VERY expensive Frank & Eileen Carmel Travel Set and was so disappointed. I travel a great deal but I hesitate even leaving the house in this it looks so unflattering. No shape to the top whatsoever. Bottoms too wide at the bottom even for flare. Over $400 for this?

I absolutely adore those pieces! If our weather would warm up just a tad…I will be living in them!

Love everything about this, and you look great in each outfit! You show so much versatility and I’ve saved this to use as a reference for future travel! (Wow – love that Kylie jacket) Hope you’re staying safe (and dry) with all the rain.

March 24, 2023 at 7:41 am

Isn’t that Kylie jacket wonderful? I had a similar jacket from Artful Home that I must have left somewhere. This is a great replacement!

Cindy…love all these stylish looks. What an awesome jacket!

Hi Mary Ann

Thank you so much! That jacket is fabulous. I will be taking it with me on my travels!

Cindy, I would wear each of these outfits even if I was only going to a friend’s house. You have such great style and I always leave with new ideas for my own wardrobe. Karen B.

I am so happy to hear that KB! You are the best. I so appreciate you!

March 23, 2023 at 7:11 am

Love this post Cindy – I have never been able to pack successfully with a capsule. Every time I see one of these posts, I think “maybe next time”. I am usually traveling with Chip on business, so we have to pack for pool/beach, sightseeing, hiking/jogging/biking and then dinners at night! Whew. If I won the lottery, I would hire a cook and a packer….🤣

March 23, 2023 at 7:26 am

The other issue is how unpredictable the weather can be. We traveled to Italy the year it snowed and was freezing cold. I packed a pair of flip flops for the shower etc., and ended up wearing them the entire time. I never wore my boots once!

March 24, 2023 at 9:04 am

I hear you! My weather app was completely wrong for Hawaii in January and for Charleston in March!

Cindy Love your new haircut…you found the right hairdresser ! Color , shine and movement!!

March 23, 2023 at 7:28 am

Thank you, yes Edward Tedeschi is really good. I highly recommend him. Anyone unhappy with their stylist that is coming to the area might benefit from scheduling an appointment with him and have your hairdresser try and copy the cut.

Love all of your black and white outfits with pops of red! I’m interested in the Michael Stars tee, but not sure if sizing… What size do you wear?

March 23, 2023 at 7:29 am

I wear a small but think a medium would work as well. I have never shed the covid pounds unfortunately. I need to get back to weight watchers!

March 27, 2023 at 6:05 am

Thanks so much, you’re the best!

' src=

March 22, 2023 at 2:24 pm

Fabulous post! I love it. But I really wanted the Michael Stars T shirt in red. I need it and only available in sizes too small or too big. Maybe I can settle for black.

Thanks for the great post Cindy. Now if the weather improves I could wear things like this. Stuck in my winter wardrobe!

Darn it! I can see you in that red tee…check eBay and poshmark. I just picked up a brand new black one there!

Thanks for the interesting post on travelwear. I’m inspired also by your natural hair color and am attempting the same. Love the variety in your clothing selections and may look for the purse.

I agree that you can’t go wrong packing black, and white with an accent color. Love what you put together, Cindy! I always add a couple long vests, too. They can be very versatile and go well with scarves.

March 22, 2023 at 1:47 pm

I think you can work with whatever neutral works for your coloring. I love long vests. They are so flattering, and LOVE scarves!

Thanks so much for today’s post. It was perfect timing for my upcoming trip to Phoenix. I’m definitely going for mix & match using my color palette.

I bought a pair of black pants, comfy tie waist with large zipper pockets from Target. I keep my passport, drivers license, global entry card with me at all times zipped up in my pants. Easy access to my cards, no digging in my purse. I do black white and tan with animal print scarves etc.

March 22, 2023 at 8:29 am

What a terrific post, Cindy! I tend to overpack when I travel and this reminds me that I don’t need to have tons of clothes to look stylish. Thank you!

Whats with the red bag being tucked up under THY BOOB! You are ready for the GYPSIES in ITALY! ALL THE CLOTHING IS CUTE ON YOU…………..

' src=

March 22, 2023 at 8:07 am

I totally agree with your recommendation for packing black and white. I usually will wear comfy black stretchy pants while on the plane, with white t-shirt. Lots of mixing and matching during the trip, yes, simple, non-expensive jewelry, a pair of jeans, comfy tennis shoes (be sure you bring a “matched” pair, not like me who accidentally packed two different pairs of white tennis shoes and had to buy a pair for the rest of the trip!) LOL!

March 22, 2023 at 7:37 am

super cute! You look adorable in everything, but I think my fave is the white Eileen Fisher top and cropped pants! Flattering and I love the white with your hair. We are renting a house in Carmel by the Sea for a month and I am really trying to pull together a bunch of cute things to take me through beach walks, dinners out, babysitting etc.. I think the Eileen Fisher outfit will be perfect (Frank and Eileen has a similar one I am eyeing, too) Thanks, as always, for your inspiration!

Since I don’t wear black, white or navy, perhaps beige (I’m of fall coloration) brown and red? Love your casual style. And your smile.

Thanks for sharing your vast wisdom.

' src=

March 22, 2023 at 9:11 am

I’m with you there, Rose. Great collection but not the colours I can wear. I ‘d choose a warm beige as the base, wear brown leathers, and scarlet red & olive for colour pops. Black has been relegated to a few items, with colour around my face. White is too harsh for me. I have been having a lot of fun editing my clothes to wear mostly warm rich fall colours …I love colour! This collection is so helpful, but interchangeable with what works for each of us personally. A good reminder of editing before you close that suitcase 🧳 Thanks, Cindy

This is so timely. I too have a black and white wardrobe with accents of red. My husband looked at your list and said you must have been in my closet! We are headed for Europe for a Rhine River cruise in May. I’ve been playing around with my wardrobe and discovered your post. I am Asian so the red accents are easy to come by. I already have similar items in my closet and I have come up with similar items. Our styles are similar. Thank you for this post. What is the link for the red purse you have in this capsule?

March 24, 2023 at 7:39 am

The purse is no longer available. It is MJ Wallace. I linked a very similar one. MJ Wallace is no doing one similar in pink…not my thing. I am so glad you found some inspiration and have a fabulous time on that cruise1. I can’t wait for Steve to get off his scooter so we can travel again! Going to Stanford today!

Tropical Vacation Outfits for Women Over 50

Welcome to the ultimate guide on how to dress for your next tropical getaway!

For your next vacation, picture yourself lounging on a pristine beach, sipping a fruity cocktail in an open-sided beach bar, or perhaps walking energetically on an interesting sightseeing excursion, while the sun kisses your skin, but you keep cool in your holiday clothes.

Let’s jump right into some essential tropical vacation outfits and resort wear, whether for town and country or beach or city, especially for women in the prime of their life.

Blond woman smiling in a sunny garden. She is wearing a red and white outfit suitable for a tropical vacation.

To start off, I’m going to say that in order to make the most of your next beach vacation or sightseeing trip in the tropics, you’ll want to pack mostly casual attire that gives you an effortless look, combining style with comfort.

And I do agree with Vivienne Westwood who once said : “If you love something, wear it all the time. Find things that suit you. This is how you look extraordinary.”

From breezy cover-ups to chic swimwear, the outfit ideas I’m sharing today will keep you looking and feeling cool under the sun, and will hopefully become clothes you’ll definitely want to wear all the time.

Calm, Cool and Collected Choices

I alway say, “choose loose fitting dresses when you can”.

I like to pack a couple of easy wear, non crease knee length dresses.

Personally I prefer a little arm coverage too. After all, the less skin exposed means the less suncream you need to apply.

Are Maxi Dresses a Good Choice for Vacation Wear?

When it comes to tropical vacation outfits, maxi dresses are a must-have.

These flowy, floor-length dresses are not only stylish but also incredibly comfortable in hot weather.

Opt for lightweight materials like cotton or linen to keep you cool during long days spent exploring.

You could pair your maxi dress with strappy sandals and a straw hat for an effortlessly chic look that transitions seamlessly from beach to bar.

Wear the Shorts!

You are not too old to wear shorts! If you feel comfortable, then the sky’s your limit.

Find a style that suits your body shape and then buy them in different colours.

Take a look at the funky, fashionable designs at Salty Crush . I love the beachy feels!

Are Two-Piece Sets Versatile?

For a beach outfit that provides a versatile and trendy option, consider packing two-piece sets for your tropical getaway.

Whether it’s a matching crop top and skirt or a coordinating top and shorts combo, two-piece sets offer endless styling possibilities and new looks when teamed with other garments.

Look for sets in vibrant summer brights or playful tropical prints to embrace the vacation vibe.

Wear them with flip-flops or sneakers and you’re set to go.

Best Swimsuits for Tropical Vacations

A bathing suit is going to be your most staple garment, and if you’re not into bikinis anymore then a great option is a classic wrap style one piece suit that is forgiving around the tummy area. I also like swimsuits with short skirts which can give you more confidence as you step out around the resort pool or the beach area.

Look out for new arrivals of swimsuits when they hit the stores at the end of winter and beginning of summer (if you want the best choices) but if you’re bargain hunting then think about buying your resort swimwear in the winter sales.

Also bear in mind that best sellers are probably best for a good reason, so give them a try.

My tip is not to skimp on your swimwear, because a good swimsuit will last – and not stretch or look flabby as cheaper options might after a few wears and washes.

Swimsuit Coverups

No beach vacation outfit is complete without a stylish swimsuit cover-up. In the cover-ups category your packing list should include things like breezy kaftans, and flowy sarongs.

Cover-ups are essential for transitioning from the beach to a beachside bar with ease. Opt for lightweight materials like chiffon or voile that provide coverage without weighing you down.

For a casual yet chic look, pair your swimsuit cover-up with a straw bag and flip flops.

Have a look at the wide selection of reasonably priced swimsuit coverups on Amazon.

Slip Dresses

Effortlessly chic and oh-so-comfortable, slip dresses are perfect for hot weather destinations and can be used as a swimsuit coverup as well.

You might choose silky luxe dresses that glide over your skin, or cotton or linen dresses to help you stay cool and stylish in the tropical heat.

Choose a slip dress in a vibrant summer print or classic white for a timeless beach vacation look. Layer with a lightweight kimono or denim jacket for cooler evenings.

Wide Leg Pants

Wide leg pants are a cooler option than jeans or leggings in tropical climates. They allow the air to circulate and you’ll find them in all kinds of gorgeous styles and colors. This style can take you from day to night, and wide leg pants are also a good option to wear as cover-up pants when the sun’s UV is at its highest.

Blond woman wearng white blouse and floral wide leg pants. She is illustrating what to pack, and some of the best tropical vacation outfits for hot steamy holidays.

Wrap Dresses

Flattering and feminine, wrap dresses are a versatile option for tropical vacations. The adjustable waist tie allows you to customize the fit, while the lightweight material keeps you comfortable in the heat.

Opt for a wrap dress in a bold tropical print or a solid color for a timeless look that can take you from beach to resort dinners with ease.

Now that you have some outfit ideas for your next beach vacation, let’s talk about how to select the best tropical vacation outfits.

How to Choose the Best Tropical Vacation Outfits

Keep these tips in mind when you’re buying outfits for your tropical vacation.

Consider Lightweight Materials

When choosing outfits for your tropical getaway, prioritize lightweight materials like cotton, linen, and chiffon. These fabrics are breathable and will keep you cool even on the hottest days.

Woman standing on a balcony looking out to sea. She is wearing a blue cotton dress. It is a good choice for a tropical vacation.

Think about Length and Style

Don’t be afraid of wearing a shorter length dress.

In hot steamy weather it’s nice not to have fabric clinging around your legs.

If you are happy wearing shorts, then you can also wear a dress that sits above your knee – and still step out with confidence.

Woman sitting on an antique bench in Penang, Malaysia. She is wearing a short floral dress. It's an ideal choice to pack as one of your tropical vacation outfits.

Opt for Versatile Pieces

Select versatile pieces that can easily mix and match to create multiple outfits.

Two-piece sets, maxi dresses, and slip dresses are great options that offer endless styling possibilities.

Linen shorts and linen blouses in white, camel or ivory can easily be mixed and matched.

Choose Bright Color Palettes

Embrace the vibrant spirit of the tropics by incorporating bright colors and playful prints into your wardrobe.

Tropical florals, bold stripes, and vibrant hues will add a fun and festive touch to your vacation outfits.

White dresses are always classy, but do team them with some bright and colorful accessories.

Don’t Forget Beachy Accessories

Complete your tropical vacation outfits with beachy accessories like straw hats, straw bags, colorfull tote bags, art scarves, and strappy sandals.

These accessories not only add style to your look but sun hats and scarves also provide much-needed sun protection .

Keep Footwear Simple

Focus on comfort. Forget heels unless you have a major event to go to. Most restaurants are happy if you wear open toe sandals, or sneakers.

I love FRANKIE4 sandals and sneakers, and always pop a pair in my suitcase for tropical vacations.

White sandals.

She Packs Lite

The Ultimate Packing List for Female Travelers over 50 (2022)

Finding a solid packing list for female travelers over 50 can be tough. When I search for packing inspiration for my travels, I find lists, but they are filled with clothes that are for a much younger crowd. Even though I am not up for short shorts and crop tops, I want to look stylish and put together. Plus I’d like to be comfortable and I want my feet to feel good after a long day of sightseeing.

If a trip is on your horizon, you’ll need a solid packing list to help make sure you have everything you need while you’re away. In this post I’ll share my top tips with you to make sure you’re set up for success.

Remember, an ultimate packing list isn’t just clothes, it’s all of the important things including clothes that you may not think of before you need them.

Start With a Good Suitcase

You’ll often hear me recommend this tip in our other blog posts at She Packs Lite, but it’s worth saying again. A high-quality suitcase is worth the investment. It’s one of the best ways to ensure that you’re setting yourself up for success, whether it’s for long trips or short trips. If this is your first time traveling in a long time, you might still be scraping by with an old suitcase. Sure, it gets the job done, but it might not be doing as much as it could for you.

I recommend spending the extra money on a durable, well-made suitcase. I always recommend a carry-on size because I prefer to never check my bag. In the event that you do have to check, you’ll want a bag that can handle it. It may be tossed around by baggage handlers and encounter all different kinds of conditions along your way. And of course, I’m all about packing light, so you should choose one that’s not too big and bulky. Having a suitcase that’s too big is a surefire way to packing more than you need.

My current luggage obsession:

The Briggs and Riley  Sympatico Hardside 21″ International Spinner

(It’s number one on my birthday list this year!)

Carry a Quality Carry-On / Personal Item

It doesn’t matter if this is going to be your only bag while traveling or if it’s just your one additional item that you get on flights. Your carry-on bag / personal item should be high-quality too. For short trips, some people challenge themselves to only bring personal item. With our packing tips, it’s totally doable. However, for long-term trips, you may need some extra room to make sure you have everything you need.

A carry-on bag, first and foremost, should be comfortable to carry. That may seem obvious from the name, but a lot of women choose their carry-on’s based on looks and not functionality. That over-the-shoulder bag might be stylish and chic. But, if it’s loaded up, after a while your shoulder is going to feel like it’s on fire. A two-strap bag or backpack can take the pressure off that shoulder that’s been singled out. In the end, it will be much more comfortable to carry your bag around the city or bringing your bags from the airport to your hotel.

Having a carry-on bag that has multiple pockets is helpful as well. On travel days you’ll need access to your passport and other travel documents. A few small zip pockets in the front can really help you stay organized. This will allow you to have easy access to all of your important documents and credit cards. And it will reduce the chance of you losing them by simply carrying them in your hand the whole time. A lost passport can really put a damper on a trip, so keep yourself organized with the help of your bags.

Use a Packing List

Packing without a list is another good way to guarantee that you pack too much. At first, you’re just packing essentials. The next thing you know, you’re throwing in four extra swimsuits and pairs of pants “just in case”. One good thing to keep in mind is asking yourself if you’ll actually wear something that you pack. If you don’t reach for it at home, it shouldn’t make it into your travel bag. Those pair of high heels may be cute, but if you don’t want to wear them on a date night at home, you won’t want to wear them on the cobblestone streets of a foreign city.

You can be strategic about your outfits too. You also don’t need an entirely different outfit for every day of the week. This not only takes up way too much room in your suitcase, but it also leaves you with unworn clothes that could free up precious space. Following my 5-4-3-2-1 packing method to bring mix and match outfits and therefore pack less.

Need a packing list? You can Get my Ultimate Packing List for Female Travelers Over 50 below:

Pack a Travel Capsule Wardrobe

I mentioned that a 5-4-3-2-1 packing method will help you pack light and only include the basics. This method is a type of travel capsule wardrobe. You can read more about making a travel capsule wardrobe here . This method of packing allows you a certain number of clothing items per category (i.e. five shirts, four bottoms, three dresses, three pairs of shoes, etc…).

It’s especially important when you’re packing your travel capsule that you stick to a single color scheme or palette. That way you have the option to mix and match items and wear each piece more than one time. All of your different pieces will work together instead of one shirt only matching with one specific pair of pants. Using a travel capsule doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style. You wear each piece more than once, but your accessories like jewelry and scarves give your outfits a little something extra. These items are also small, so you won’t have to worry about taking up too much space with them.

Don’t Forget to Pack the Basics

Many travel websites will tell you that you should start with a base layer like tank tops or sports bras. This is a good tip for some trips, especially ones in cold weather. In the winter months, a base layer of Merino wool can be worn with multiple outfits and it will be functional as well. The 5-4-3-2-1 method will help you start out with a good foundation of items that you should definitely have for your wardrobe. More specifically wardrobe outfits: tops, bottoms, and shoes, etc. Packing specific amount for each of these clothing items will get you off to a great start if you’re packing light for the first time.

In addition to your wardrobe pieces and your larger clothing items, the right number of pairs of underwear and socks should also make it on your packing list. Since these items are a lot smaller, it’s okay to pack a clean pair for each day if you’re not planning on doing laundry over the course of your trip. When flying, we’ll also throw in an extra pair of underwear and socks in our carry-on bag in the (hopefully) unlikely event that your checked bag is lost. Pants and shirts can be re-worn if you have to make a detour in your travels. You’ll be much more comfortable if you have a clean pair of underwear to change into if your travel plans change suddenly.

Consider Your Clothing Preference As An Over 50 Woman

I have joked for years that I am having “my own personal climate crisis”. That means that on any given day, regardless of if I am in a warm climate or cold, my body temperature may tell me the opposite of what is actually happening. Travel clothes that layer well are key here. I always bring a packable down jacket, you just never know what the evenings will be like or if my body decides its freezing out.

Know What Activities You’re Going To Do

If you want to go into any Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia, you’ll have to be pretty covered up as a woman. These ornate temples are worth a visit, so your clothing shouldn’t stop you from going inside and appreciating them. It’s going to be hot, so make sure you have lightweight clothes that cover your arms and legs. This also goes for Catholic churches in different parts of the world. Even if you’re not religious, the architecture of these buildings in Europe and South America is beautiful. They are definitely worth stopping by and you will need to respect the dress code.

Walking is a popular way to see many different cities because you can experience them just like a local. If you do plan on doing a lot of walking on your trip, make sure that the shoes you pack can handle it. There’s not much you can do about blisters once they happen. And, they can make your day miserable so it’s best if you just avoid them altogether if you can. It’s a good idea to make a cute and comfortable pair of sneakers one of the pairs of shoes that you pack.

Research the Weather and Climate in Your Destination

This seems like a no-brainer, but sometimes we assume what the weather will be based on what we already know about a destination. yes, it’s probably a safe bet to pack mostly swimsuits and shorts for a vacation in the Bahamas. Many other destinations have distinct seasons, and you’ll want to pack accordingly based on when you’re going to be traveling. Spring and fall can be especially unpredictable seasons in many different countries. You don’t want to get caught in some bad weather and not have any appropriate clothes. Frankly it is always good to bring a lightweight rain jacket in the event that there is unexpected showers.

Even in warm climates or places that you’re expecting to have good weather, I still recommend bringing one jacket. Small lightweight jackets usually fit pretty well in your suitcase if you roll them up, so you don’t have to worry about taking up too much space. If you don’t need it, that’s great, but it’s always your best option to be prepared.

Make Your Outerwear Match With Every Outfit

In colder weather, of course, jackets and coats can be much bulkier than a light summer sweater. This is why it’s even more important for your outwear to work with every outfit. Choose a jacket or coat that is a neutral color. That way it is sure to match every outfit combination you come up with while traveling.

If you find that you’re struggling to fit a bulkier jacket in your suitcase, one great packing tip I frequently recommend is to wear your coat while traveling. This will free up a lot of space in your suitcase and leave room for other things that you want to pack. In warmer climates or summer months, you probably won’t have the packing problem because your jacket will be much lighter. You should still make sure that it’s something that you can mix and match with different outfits over the course of your trip.

It’s always nice to have a stylish and packable rain jacket. You can find my favorites here.

Bring Multipurpose Shoes

In our travel capsule packing method you need to be strategic about your shoes! As women, the temptation to overpack shoes can be strong. I firmly believe that for every trip you take, whether it’s long or short, that you only need three pairs of shoes. I limit my shoes because they can be some of the bulkiest things that you pack. Unlike other clothing items, I can’t roll shoes or compress them to make them smaller, so it’s important to pack fewer pairs to make sure that you’re packing light for your trips.

Walking Shoes

I mentioned earlier that a good, comfortable pair of sneakers should be at least one pair of shoes that make it on your packing list . In order to make sneakers match with more outfits, I recommend bringing a pair of cute street sneakers. You’ll often see Europeans wearing these kinds of shoes. They’re not athletic or running sneakers, so they can be dressed up if you choose, but they’re also comfortable so you won’t have a problem wearing them around all day.

Other Shoes

The other two pairs of shoes are up to you. If you’re traveling in the summer months, a comfortable pair of stylish sandals can be a good option because they can be dressed up for a nicer dinner or dressed down for a day at the beach. If you’re traveling in the winter, you might decide that a pair of leather boots are a good way to keep your outfits exciting. What you want to avoid when choosing shoes to bring are shoes that you’ll only wear once during your trip, or even for a few hours. Those new heels are cute, but if you can only wear them to dinner before your feet start hurting, they’re not a good choice to include in your three pairs that bring on your trip.

Stick with Travel-size Toiletries

Toiletries are something that you should always have on your packing list when you’re getting ready for a trip. When packing light, you’re better off packing travel-size toiletries instead of full-size bottles of shampoo and conditioner. These not only take up a lot of space but you’ll be forced to check your bag as well. If you want the freedom that comes with traveling carry-on, you’ll need travel-size toiletries to get through airport security. Another alternative to smaller bottles of shampoo and conditioner is solid toiletries. This eliminates the need for TSA-restricted liquids at all. And as a bonus, they won’t explode all over your belongings in your bag.

If you’re planning on a longer trip, another tip I recommend is simply purchasing these larger items at a drugstore when you get to your final destination. You can find everything you need at local stores, and you can leave these larger bottles behind as well.

Think about laundry ahead of time

A travel capsule of mix and match outfits means you’ll wear the same item of clothing multiple times. If you happen to be traveling to an especially hot location or you just spill something on your shirt, you’ll want the option to clean it. When planning your trip, consider laundry ahead of time when you’re planning a trip. I don’t often use hotel laundry as it can be very pricey, but Yelp makes it easy to find laundry nearby. On a recent trip to Portugal, we used a service that came to the hotel to pick up the clothing and dropped it off when done!

If you’re staying in an Airbnb while you’re away, you may have access to a washer and dryer in the unit you’re staying in, or at least very close. Many vacation rentals in the United States also have washers and dryers because they’re often people’s second homes. Throw a few laudry detergent pods in your travel-size liquids bag. Or, plan on purchasing some laundry detergent when you get to your final destinations. In a well-equipped vacation rental, they may even offer you laundry detergent, which is a nice perk.

Choose Your Daytime Bag Carefully

A bag that you carry with you during the day while you’re traveling is not the same thing as a carry-on bag that you bring on the plane. You probably don’t want to carry around a heavy backpack all day, and you probably shouldn’t anyway because it can make you stand out as someone who can get pickpocketed easily. A day pack is usually much smaller than a carry-on bag, and it should sit close to your body so you can keep a close eye on your belongings at all times.

Solo traveler? If this is your first solo trip, you might be nervous about pickpockets in a foreign country, but there’s no reason to be as long as you keep your wits about you while you’re walking around. Fanny packs can be good day packs, but I recommend wearing them as a cross-body bag instead of around your waist so they can’t be removed easily by thieves. Smaller purses also work well for this purpose, and if you can, you should wear your bag under your jacket or coat so it’s not easily accessible to others.

Pack Those Essential Travel Items

Ather essential item that you should consider packing, for international trips especially, is a power adapter. Most foreign outlets won’t accommodate your phone or laptop chargers. Being in a strange place is never a good time to have a dead cell phone battery. You can usually find multi-country power adapters online. That way you don’t have to buy a different one for every continent that you travel to. Other good things to have are laundry bags and shoe bags to keep your clothes clean while you’re traveling from place to place.

I suggest downloading any travel apps that you think you’ll use prior to leaving. International cellphone service can be slow. And, it’s good to not have to worry about using up your roaming data on an app download. You can see which apps I recommend using here .

FAQ: Packing List For Female Travelers Over 50

Still have some lingering questions about what you should pack for your next trip as a traveler over 50? I have some more tips to help you make sure you have everything you need.

What Should a Woman Pack For a Trip?

Unlike our male counterparts, most women can’t just throw some random clothes into a suitcase and make it work. Following our travel capsule method! It is the best thing you can do to make sure you have all of the necessary clothes you need and still be able to switch up your outfits.  If you are looking for a packing list for female travelers over 50, this post above will give you all sorts of tips and tricks!

What Should You Not Forget When Traveling?

Some things that you should definitely not forget when you’re packing for a trip are a phone charger, a toothbrush, and sunscreen. There are others, of course, but these are some big ones that can seem obvious, but they’ll make a big difference if you forget them. You can get sunscreen at most drugstores, but if it’s a resort town or tropical destination, they can upcharge you quite a lot for sunscreen.

What is the Most Forgotten Item When Traveling?

Some of the most forgotten items are actually some of the things that can cause the biggest problems when they’re forgotten. If you’re going to be away for an extended period of time, make sure you have any medications that you need, glasses or contacts, and any toiletries that you can’t get at a drugstore. It’s also a good idea to pack a swimsuit, even if you don’t plan on using it, and some form of jacket in case you run into bad weather.  My packing list for female travelers over 50 includes everything you need for all your trips, domestic OR international!

What Should You Not Forget When Traveling Internationally?

When you’re traveling internationally, there are some additional items that should be on your packing list that you may not normally think of for a regular weekend away. If you’re getting out of the country, make sure you have your passport, visa if you need one, travel insurance, vaccinations, and credit cards that will work abroad.  My packing list for female travelers over 50 includes everything you need for all your trips, domestic OR international!

Cruise Wear over 50: Flattering Cruise Outfits for Women (plus packing list)

what to wear on a cruise - cruise wear over 50

Sharing is caring!

It’s so much fun packing up and preparing for a cruise . For me, this often starts with thinking about what cruise outfits to wear. While this post is about cruise wear over 50, these cruise fashions can work well for women of all ages!

Please keep in mind that you should always wear what makes you look and feel good. It just happens that I’m turning 50 this summer, but I would wear these cruise outfits at 40 and at 60, and every age in between.

In this post, I share casual cruise wear ideas and formal wear options (all quite affordable). Whether you’re looking for a cute maxi dress or an elegant cocktail dress, I think you’ll like these styles. These outfits aren’t too tight, are versatile, and most importantly, look fabulous!

I’ve also included a few bathing suits and cover ups, shawls, tote bags and evening bags – accessories often complete the look, but are also really useful on a cruise.

I’ve also included photos of some of my own cruise outfits from past cruises. Now, I am by no means a model, but I have a theory that everyone looks good on a cruise .

What to Wear on a Cruise (over 40, 50, 60)

  • 2-3 sundresses and maxi dresses
  • 2-3 pair of shorts
  • 3-5 tops (day & evening)
  • 2-3 pair of dark jeans, capri pants or a skirt
  • 2-3 smart casual dresses or Little Black Dress

Cruise Outfits for Ladies over 50

Cruise daywear.

On most cruises you can dress casually during the day, in shorts and a t-shirt, or a sundress.

For port days, consider your shore excursion plans and decide what to wear. If you’re heading to a beach , a bathing suit and cover up are perfect. If you’re sightseeing, a cute top and shorts or a sundress or maxi dress is the way to go.

Casual Dresses – Sundresses &  Maxi Dresses

Casual spaghetti strap sundress.

This casual spaghetti strap sundress is comfortable and cute, and would make a great embarkation day outfit. If you want to pack light for a cruise , you could even wear this dress in the evening with accessories.

Romper /shorts

This one piece romper is casual, but looks a little bit cruisey just the same. Great on the ship or to wear on port days . It’s available in this nautical stripe, as well as solid colors and is very affordable (shhhh).

Maxi dresses

This striped maxi dress makes a great sundress or bathing suit cover up (that’s how I wear it). However, depending on the color or print, this maxi dress can look a bit more dressy.

This spaghetti strap maxi dress is comfortable and casual for strolling on a port day , but will also look great in the evening on your cruise. Take a look at the different colors and patterns. My favorites are the black, navy floral, and boho.

However, I love a deep blue dress when I’m cruising, so I always pack at least one of this color. Please note that this dress runs a little small, so you may want to size up.

Recommended:  Cute maxi with pockets (see color options & pricing here)

Evening Wear on a Cruise

What? Are you planning a cruise around the world? The list you posted is way too much. No one needs all those clothes for a 7 day cruise. I have been on at least 50 cruises and less is more.

' src=

Everyone is different, so if you bring less than that’s great. Some people enjoy changing a couple of times a day while others are more minimalist. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

' src=

Wow! You are over packing. With 50 plus cruises under my belt I’ve found 3 day outfits and three evening outfits, 1 or 2 bathing suits snd coverup, gym clothes if so inclined., flip flops for the pool, good walking shoes and some pretty Sandals. Underwater and that’s it!

We’re all different, but thanks for sharing your packing list and style.

Have a wonderful cruise!

' src=

Your choices are super cute, but this is definitely a heavy packing list — I say this so newbie cruisers won’t think this is all necessary. I made a list years ago of what I actually wore on a cruise, and now I keep it (laminated) to use for future trips:

– 2 casual dresses – White jeans and two blouses for dinner – 3 pairs shorts/skirts and 5 day blouses – Light denim shirt as a jacket for evening walks on deck – 2 swimsuits and a cover-up for each one – Nightgown – Ball cap and straw hat – Tennis shoes, walking sandals, wedges for dinner

Perfect! Thanks for sharing

' src=

Personally I pack way more than this! Especially if we are driving to the port. I pack less if we are flying and I have to drag my suitcase around. I’ve been on 14 cruises and I’m 53. For me, cruises are a chance to dress up! I love Lilly Pulitzer dresses and shorts because they are bright and cheerful. I love my packing cubes – they are life changing!

Sounds great!

' src=

I tend to take longer cruises. My next cruise in 2024 is 35 days. But even on a 14 day cruise my first purchase would be their laundry package. I find it a great value! I can leave my clothes to be cleaned and have them back the next day clean and pressed. Allows you to have only 3 days of casual clothes if you want. Really space saving if you are flying to the cruise port.

Great idea!

35 Best Women's Loungewear Sets to Pack on Your Next Trip

By Madison Flager and Paris Wilson

35 Best Women's Loungewear Sets to Pack on Your Next Trip

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Some may argue that traveling by plane is an occasion to dress up, but for most of us at Traveler, comfort is the main priority when planning a transit day ensemble: You want something loose enough that you won't need to readjust (or worse, unbutton) a few hours into a flight or road trip, but put-together enough to feel that you've made a switch out of pajamas and into a true outfit. Luckily, there is no shortage of loungewear sets these days.

Read on for 35 of the best loungewear sets to add to your travel wardrobe , many of which are sitting in our editors' dresser drawers. From upscale sweatsuits to cozy cashmere knits, they'll keep you comfy whether you're sitting on a plane, train, or in the passenger seat, and will get a re-wear on lazy vacation days when the only item on your to-do list is lounging around the Airbnb .

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date. Additional reporting by Meaghan Kenny.

The Aerie LumberJane collection has been one of the brand's more popular releases. The collection features breathable, lightweight waffle fabric in shirts, shorts, and now polos. The LumberJane polo and short set are perfect for lazy vacation days spent shuffling around in your slippers . Each piece has raw seams along the sleeves, sides, and back that gives it a more lived-in look.

Buck Mason is at the forefront of elevated essentials. The Vintage Interloop set features an oversized crew that has a relaxed fit all around and thinly ribbed stiching on the cuffs to give more structure to the slouchy sleeves. The French terry sweatpants are slimming and so comfortable. Each set looks slightly different than the other, thanks to Buck Mason's Venice Wash technique that creates its cool, vintage look.

We're always raving about Girlfriend Collective, a size-inclusive, sustainably- and ethically-made brand. This set is made from half recycled, half organic cotton. They're available in your classic neutral colors, as well as this rich wine hue.

Kim Kardashian's shapewear and loungewear brand Skims never misses when it comes to cozy sets. The Cotton Fleece collection is a more sporty take on classic loungewear. The soft fleece shorts have an interior drawstring at the waist for a more customizable fit.

Image may contain: Clothing, Long Sleeve, Sleeve, Fleece, Knitwear, Sweater, and Sweatshirt

This chic pullover and sweat shorts both don the recognizable Alexander Wang logo. While the set is one of the trendiest pieces on our list, you'll be pleasantly surprised at just how soft the heavy brushed cotton terry is. Style the set with a small crossbody bag and pair of chunky dad sneakers for quick errands or walks around the city.

Image may contain: Clothing, Pants, Home Decor, Linen, Adult, Person, Accessories, Jewelry, Necklace, and Pajamas

You can never go wrong with a simple high-waisted pant and tank top combo. The Anrabess sleeveless set is lightweight and thin, making it supremely packable in any weekender bag or carry-on. At just $30, it is one of the most affordable loungewear sets on our list.

Is there anything easier than throwing on a jumpsuit? Spanx AirEssentials jumpsuit is one of the brand's bestsellers—and it's just been restocked in more colors. We love the drawstring tie at the waist that gives the jumpsuit a more fitted and flattering look.

Traveler 's commerce producer, Paris Wilson , swears by Roots' loungewear. “I've been raving about Roots for years. It's hard to find a brand that doesn't skimp on quality,” she says. The Luxe Crew and Pintuck pant are made from a cotton and cashmere blend. While the material gives it a more chic look, the fit of the set is more relaxed and loose. This can easily be dressed up or down, and would look great with a sleek pair of white sneakers .

The loose fit of the Ramona sweatshirt compliments the brand's drawstring waist Jane shorts. The rouched terry fabric on the inside of each garment keeps you warm and cozy without overheating. As warmer days approach, the yellow dip-dye design is a must-have for your spring and summer wardrobe .

If you're looking for a more polished look, the Malibu set is for you. The set is made up of the Frank & Eileen Audrey Capelet and the Catherine Sweatpant . Each piece is made from 100 percent cotton triple fleece, making it incredibly soft. It's the perfect set for a long road trip or a chilly plane.

The Cool Stretch collection from Pact is made from breathable organic cotton. The soft, thin layers are a go-to summer fit when temperatures are high and you just want to chill inside. It’s perfect for long-haul flights and road trips where comfort is at the top of your list, but you don’t want to step out in your pajamas. This set is made for cold weather. The thick fabric will keep you warm and toasty whether you’re hanging inside with friends or out sightseeing. The top has a dropped shoulder sleeve that looks more oversized while the pants feature a wide-leg with a drawstring waist.. The set comes in 10 solid colors that are easy to pair with a slip-on sneaker or Ugg boots .

The soft ribbed knit of the Muse hoodie and sweatpant offers a lot of dimension to the duo. The set is lightweight enough that it can be worn over workout clothes without any bulkiness. The high-waisted joggers pair well with the cropped hoodie and offer a more chic silhouette.

You’ll be comfortable from head to toe with this ultra-soft pullover and pant set. The pants have a classic ‘70s wide-leg silhouette accompanied by an elastic waistband, while the pullover has a polo-inspired collar and a slightly cropped hem. An all-white set never goes out of style and will look great with a white sneaker .

The name tells you everything you need to know. The Coziest Cashmere Blend hoodie and jogger are ultra-soft. The fabric is warm yet breathable and the fact that it’s a blend gives you peace of mind that it won’t be ruined in the washing machine.

Traveler editors swear by Lunya's washable silk pajamas and cashmere Travel Set . The brand’s Silksweats complete its holy trinity of comfort. With a sherpa interior and thermoregulating abilities, you'll be comfortable without overheating in this set. Bonus: Both pieces are reversible so you can have two looks for one.

There's something to be said for a zip-up sweatshirt, even if they've largely been replaced by pullovers of late. For one, if your temperature flips from chilly to warm, you can regulate without bothering your seatmate while trying to take off your hoodie. We're a fan of the sweatpants, too: the deep pockets, cuffed ankles, and cashmere fabric are all plusses.

A new addition to OV's ultra-soft, lightweight, and durable CloudKnit line-up : this boxy T-shirt with a slightly cropped fit. It comes in charcoal, navy, mocha, fog white, and jasmine blue, all of which will match your go-to black leggings or joggers .

Awarded one of Oprah's Favorite Things in 2020, I was eager to put on Cozy Earth's ultra-soft joggers, and am happy to report they lived up to the hype. Made of a mix of premium viscose from bamboo, acrylic, and spandex, they're smooth and cool to the touch, and have a loose but not baggy fit. I've worn them a ton on WFH days, and would happily fly in them. Snag a matching pullover if you like the matching set look.

San Francisco–based Quince launched a maternity collection, which includes a nursing-friendly long sleeve and lounge joggers with an adjustable drawstring waistband. All of the collection's pieces are made with renewable materials like Tencel lyocell, a biodegradable fiber made from wood pulp; mulberry silk, a hypoallergenic and thermoregulating fabric; the company's SuperSoft fabric, a blend of recycled polyester and tencel; and sustainably- and humanely-sourced Mongolian cashmere.

Outdoor Voices’ All Day hoodie and sweatpants set really is made to wear from dusk to dawn. It aims to be the softest pair of sweats you will ever wear, and stacks up, with a CloudKnit fabric that feels as cozy as your most worn-in pair of pajamas. The sweatpants are high-rise and more fitted toward the bottom to give the most flattering look possible, too. The pieces can be bought individually and come in six different colors, from neutral charcoal to a rich Kalamata purple.

While former Traveler editor Jessica Puckett's favorite cashmere set has since sold out, Cuyana's Pima outfit is another great option for plane travel and lounging, particularly in warmer environments, as the material is soft, smooth, and breathable.

Image may contain: Clothing, Sleeve, Apparel, Long Sleeve, Shorts, Human, and Person

Former Traveler editor Corina Quinn turned us on to Vuori's DreamKnit Collection hoodie and jogger set. “The DreamKnit feels like a cloud—it's so soft and cozy, yet lightweight, so you don't get too hot or too cool in them,” she says. “On top of that, because there are a few different models of jogger pants and tops, my friends and I have all found a model that's flattering for us.” For a pair of sweats that make you feel like you’re wearing a real outfit without actually doing so, Vuori’s unbelievably soft, stretchy sets are an easy pick.

Friend + Folk is a size- and gender-inclusive brand that prioritizes a limited carbon footprint, and puts it into practice by way of free carbon neutral shipping, recyclable and plastic-free packaging, limited batch-production, and more. The Joon joggers are a favorite—the fit is roomy and comfortable yet still tailored, and the zippered pockets are ideal for stashing AirPods, lip balm, and other odds and ends without worrying they'll fall out as you dash through the airport. Pair them with the Perry pullover and you've got a new airport uniform.

Lululemon may be best known for its leggings and workout wear, but don't skip over the brand's loungewear. This set is made out of a smooth Softstreme material that is stretchy and feels smooth against your skin. It's a great loungewear set to wear if you run hot.

We love this Madewell number, made of a fleece-like Superbrushed terry fabric. Wide legs and a loose fit make it just the kind of thing we want to wear on long travel days, and the patch pockets are much appreciated. Since it does have tank top-style straps, bring a cardigan or other added layer for the plane.

Some loungewear is better suited for inside wear, like this cozy ribbed shorts set. Wear the pullover, with its bell sleeves and slit in the back, over leggings for long-haul flights. The stretchy shorts have a fairly short inseam, so they'll likely be more comfortable as a sleeping short or loungewear piece to change into when you arrive at your hotel or rental house.

Image may contain: Clothing, Suit, Overcoat, Apparel, Coat, Human, and Person

This two-piece set might be the closest thing to sleepwear on this list, and yet is still cute enough to feel confident while wearing through the airport. It comes in a dozen colors, from basic heather gray to bold indigo blue, and pairs slouchy, relaxed fit pants with a scoop-neck button-up henley.

Image may contain: Clothing, Sleeve, Apparel, Long Sleeve, Human, Person, Standing, and Pants

Sure, all sweatpants are designed to be comfortable, but the cotton, modal, and spandex fabric Knix uses takes things up a notch. The smooth, cooling, and slightly stretchy fabric feels fantastic against skin and looks a bit more put-together than typical sweatpant material.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Dress, Human, Person, and Pants

Most loungewear tends to follow the same cut, so we appreciate Monos, a luggage brand , shaking things up when delving into clothing. This set is as soft as any sweatpants out there, with a mid-length wide-leg pant and a short sleeve V-neck tee that's just slightly cropped.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, and Pants

Anything labeled Signaturesoft nails both the rest day and flying-comfortably mood we're going for. The top and bottom have a streamlined shape and the sweatpants are tapered at the ankle. Both pieces are made of a comfortable rayon, acrylic, and spandex mix, so you’ll feel cozy while still looking put together. The sweatshirt and sweatpants can be purchased individually and come in nearly a dozen colors should you want to mix and match, and the sweatshirt passes the video-conferencing-chic test, in that it looks more like a standard sweater than workout wear.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Pajamas, Human, and Person

Not a hoodie person? You might like this cowl-neck top, which comes with cropped pants, both made of a super soft jersey and spandex fabric. Shop the set in gray, sky blue, strawberry, or buttercream, and wear it on your next overnight flight to feel like you're in pajamas.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Shoe, Human, Person, Suit, Coat, Overcoat, Sleeve, and Long Sleeve

You may never want to put on pajamas again after wearing Softwear's Lounge Set. The fabric is buttery soft inside and out. Both the pullover and joggers are tailored and fitted with a clean silhouette—the top could pass for a normal sweater—while still being ultra soft. Plus, it’s long-lasting: The sustainable fabric is pilling-resistant and made to keep its shape after every wear.

Made for pregnant or nursing moms, this Everly Grey set is designed to fit a baby bump and make nursing easier with side openings on the top. Made of stretchy fabric with cuffed ankles and wrists and pockets on the hips, it's a loose, ever-so-slightly tailored look you'll wear again and again. Order it in one of four neutral colors: black, charcoal, oyster pink, or denim blue.

What to Look for When Choosing Travel Pants

When searching for the perfect travel pants, several key features can enhance your comfort and style on the road. Consider the following factors to ensure you find pants that meet the unique demands of travel:

Comfortable Fabric

Opt for breathable, stretchy fabrics that provide ease of movement. Materials like cotton blends, synthetic fabrics with stretch, or moisture-wicking materials are ideal for various climates and activities.

Wrinkle Resistance

Choose pants that resist wrinkles to keep you looking polished even after hours of wear or being packed in a suitcase. Wrinkle-resistant fabrics such as synthetic blends or certain cotton weaves can help maintain a neat appearance.

Versatility

Look for pants that can easily transition from casual to more formal occasions. Versatile styles can save space in your luggage and allow you to adapt to different settings without sacrificing comfort.

Functional Pockets

Ample, well-placed pockets are invaluable for storing essentials like a phone, passport, or small travel accessories. Pants with zippered or secure pockets can add an extra layer of security for your belongings.

Quick Drying

If you anticipate being in humid or wet conditions, quick-drying pants are a game-changer. Fabrics with moisture-wicking properties or those designed for fast drying will keep you comfortable in various climates.

Adjustable Features

Pants with adjustable waistbands or drawstrings offer flexibility in fit, accommodating changes in body shape due to different climates or culinary indulgences during your travels.

Opt for well-constructed pants with reinforced seams to withstand the rigors of travel. Durable materials will ensure your pants remain in good condition through multiple adventures.

Security Features

Some travel pants come with hidden or secure pockets, providing an added layer of protection for valuables. This feature can be particularly useful in crowded or unfamiliar settings.

By considering these factors, you can find travel pants that not only meet your comfort and functional needs but also enhance your overall travel experience.

I would deeply appreciate a clear indication of which products are made from natural materials and which add plastic or non-degradable materials to our environment. I believe many of us are more concerned with helping to stem the production of man made non-biodegradable materials that hurt our environment, than we are with avoiding wrinkles. Cotton is comfortable and durable.

Best travel clothes for women over 50: comfort, And style.

' src=

UPDATED 10/2023. Traveling can be tricky. Especially when you are a woman over 50 or a woman at any age, actually. It’s not as easy for us as it is for younger travelers. So I have pulled together the best travel clothes for women over 50.

With long hours spent on a plane or in the car, comfort becomes a top priority. But being comfortable doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your fashion style.

To give you the best options. Options that work for you as well as give you different looks.

I do not want to be dressed up wearing high heels either. I was miserable when I traveled in heels the first time. The second time I packed you can bet those were left at home.

Thank you for reading this post. Don't forget to subscribe! This way you never miss an update, travel deals, discounts and more!! Subscribe to the right------>

I love my Boho vibe. But I do want to look decent yet still be comfortable. It always surprises me when I see people flying in their pajamas.

Matter of fact? It still surprises me when I see folks wearing pajamas while shopping. I don’t think I have ever left my house in my pajamas, but I am of the “older” end of the Boomer generation.

The first time I flew in an airplane was right after high school more than 50 years ago. My husband was working for AA at the time, and we were lucky to have flight benefits.

But we had to dress nicely. Not only were we representative of the company, but we were often lucky to be moved to first-class seats. Winning if you ask me so dress nice I would.

Fast-forward to the last time I flew which was a few months ago. Life could not look more different than it did when I first started flying. We really are not allowed much space for our carry-on bags let alone those we check.

Last year I noticed no one really looked pulled together except those you could tell were flying for business. Crammed together in seats too tight.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Business casual look aside, my friends and I do agree one of the most important things is to be comfortable especially while traveling.

Baggy clothes do not feel comfortable to me. Matter of fact, they feel sloppy, almost uncomfortable.

I know many will not agree with that last sentence. While other women tell me that is exactly how they feel and would not be comfortable flying in pajamas.

Of course to each their own. I would never tell someone what they should or should not wear. I know I would not appreciate someone telling me what I should or should not wear.

If you feel the same way I do and prefer to be comfortable yet look pulled together, this article is for you. This wardrobe works not only for domestic travel but internationally to a foreign country as well.

The easiest and best  travel clothes  for women over 50 are pulled together in a travel capsule wardrobe ready to go when you are. I have placed links at the bottom of this article to help you find the perfect options for you.

What is a travel capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe of any type is a collection of basic yet key, functional clothing. And it is probably the best way not only to organize your travel wardrobe but your whole wardrobe.

When I was working in corporate and often away on a business trip, my wardrobe consisted of five suits, three pairs of pants in dark colors, three dresses, and a few basic tops.

In my closet, you would find these clothes hanging next to each other. I would pull the first outfit in line on the rack for Monday and work back from there. In the second week, I would simply swap out the tops and accessories.

For two weeks, I had outfits that I could literally pull out of the closet, slip on with shoes and accessories, and walk out the door.

Once worn, that outfit would go to the back of the line if it did not need to go to the cleaners. Then I would wear the next outfit in line the following day.

Fast-forward to my current life of teaching fitness and yoga classes as well as being a travel blogger on the road, and capsule wardrobes still work the best. Just much more comfy.

How many pieces of clothing Should A Capsule Hold For The Best travel clothes for women over 50?

The answer varies depending on who you ask or what you read. In general capsule wardrobes may have as few as 10 pieces for those that  live minimally , but often more in the range of 20 to 30 pieces.

In the summer, fewer pieces may work while during the colder, winter months you may need more pieces.

The best travel clothes are often those made of natural fiber or material such as cotton as they are the most breathable.

Unfortunately cotton can wrinkle. Who wants to pull a wrinkly dress out of their travel bag when getting ready for a nice dinner on vacation?

A good idea is to include some synthetic pieces such as polyester as they make the best travel clothes as far as not wrinkling.

I’m not a proponent of polyester but in addition to not wrinkling like cotton, they also tend to be lightweight and odor resistant.

A pair of pants in a poly blend will look much better when you arrive than a linen pair of pants. There are many options for travel pants from black pants in merino wool to travel pants that can also be used for other activities such as hiking to leggings.

I often travel in my yoga leggings or hiking pants as well as in my most comfortable shoes. These pieces travel very well, and they have lots of pockets. If pants do not have pockets, I do not buy them.

I can easily put my ticket, phone, cash, and anything else I may need quickly in my pockets. Plus they are very light, dry quickly, and affordable.

Finally, the best travel purse is one that you can carry everything you need without being too heavy. I prefer a crossbody bag that is safer but anti-theft as well. My current bag is from Baggalini and I have had it for many years.

How do you make a capsule wardrobe from scratch?

If you are beginning to pull a  capsule wardrobe together whether it is for a travel  wardrobe, business wardrobe, or day-to-day, take a look at your current style.

For those like me that are more minimal and tailored, a frilly, lace blouse probably would not be used much in our wardrobes. A loose fitting, silky blouse may work for some but for me, it would never be worn.

A good idea is to take a hard look at your closet. What do you wear most often? What do you not wear at all or very rarely?

As mature women, it is important we not only look our best but feel our best. It only takes a little bit of time to choose clothes that provide the best fit and go a long way to feeling confident in our skin.

Designing your capsule of the best travel clothes for women over 50

For me, I take fashion trends with a grain of salt and choose to start with color. Why? Fashion trends tend to be for younger bodies than where I am now in my 60s.

I tend to gravitate toward blues and blacks as far as pants, shorts, and skirts for my base layer.  I still have a black jacket in my closet I reach for it on days I need to be more pulled together.

Adding neutral colors such as these plus brown and even white, beige, and pink, makes mixing and matching easy allowing you to create different outfits.

Pops of color instantly liven up these neutrals and are perfect for tropical vacations, cruise wear, or resort wear. A little black dress can double as the best travel dress also if you choose good quality.

Skinny jeans? If you are comfortable with them and they are the perfect fit, absolutely. If not, even though they may be in fashion today, you will not wear them. It’s that simple. Comfort is number one.

I have an active lifestyle and my choices may not work for you. For me, comfortable travel clothes take precedence over fashion any day.

I always gravitate to a nice shirt or short sleeve top to make layering easier. I also choose wrinkle resistant options and my favorite pieces are the ones that always travel the best.

How about shoes? How many pairs should you pack? Again, it depends on what you will be doing on your vacation. A good option is to choose shoes that you can wear while traveling as well as when you are on vacation.

If like me, you tend to be active, you may need to pack several pairs of shoes. I often choose my workout sneakers along with a dressy pair of sandals and flip flops for the warm weather in the summer vacations. Also, consider wearing clothes with built-in sun protection.

Winter is a different ball game. I do try to avoid going north during the cold weather winter months but being a Cleveland girl, it often happens as mom still lives in Cleveland.

Again, I will have my workout shoes but also a pair of comfortable black boots that will go well with any outfit.

Pulling it all together

Cruise fashion is different from resort fashion which is way different from what you would need for a week in a cabin in the mountains. Think about your trip and what you will need.

Start with a  packing list . Write down how many days you will be traveling and how many days you will be on vacation.

I choose black pants or blue jeans for the days I am traveling. They are both great options that can also be mixed in and worn on your actual vacation.

The best travel outfits may be worn in different ways for different events. If you have great style, it will be easy for you to pull together a wardrobe of stylish travel clothes.

If you dread packing, starting with a packing list is definitely the way to go, so you can decide how many outfits you will need. You can grab mine to print out here:  What To Pack

If you are packing for a cruise, you may need a dress for the formal night. On the cabin vacation, you may not need anything dressy at all.

Next, what is your body type? If a comfortable waistline is important, on your travel days you would not want to wear a super tight pair of jeans.

What do you normally wear when you not only are comfortable but are also feeling your best? The perfect travel outfit and the best travel clothing are those that make you feel good and look good.

A favorite clothing line of mine is  Sketchers . Not only are their shoes amazing, their pants give me a great fit. And most of their clothes are wrinkle-resistant as well as many being water resistant.

What should you have in your travel clothes capsule?

Ready to pull it all together? Perfect! Separate your clothing items by day wear and night wear. Think of your color scheme and what will hold up to the rigors of travel.

Did I mention underwear yet? The best travel underwear stays in place! You do not want to be dealing with pulling underwear out from where it may have moved while sitting on a plane or in the car.

Comfortable pants  and a top, or I have found a travel dress that has a flattering fit on you is another great option. Personally, I love the options from Eileen Fisher .  My favorite piece is the washable stretch crepe pants .

Choose one that is the perfect length and long enough, so you do not need to worry about bending over. Dresses are often the best choice for travel to warmer climates.

For cold weather trips, a good pair of jeans with a nice fit and a leather jacket may be a great way to go from plane to taxi or from the car to the hotel. Add a color scarf for that pop of color.

Here are some great travel tips for clothes that will keep you comfortable and stylish on your next adventure.

1. A casual maxi dress is perfect for  travel any time of the year . Throw on a cardigan or jacket for cooler weather and add a colorful scarf or shawl for extra warmth. Eddie Bauer has some great dresses for travel including tank dresses and t-shirt dresses. Both travel very well.

2. A pair of comfortable pants, like yoga pants or leggings, can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Pair them with a cute top and jacket for a put-together look.  Fabletics  has a great intro offer for yoga pants and leggings as well as Eileen Fisher mentioned above.

3. A skirt is a great option for travel, especially if you’ll be doing a lot of walking. Choose a comfortable material like cotton or dark blue denim, and pair it with a cute top. For plus size women, Lane Bryant offers great options for not only travel, but office looks as well.

4. If you’ll be doing a lot of sightseeing, consider wearing comfortable sneakers or flats. You can also pack a pair of sandals or dress shoes for evening outings.

5. Don’t forget to pack a few essential accessories. A hat can protect you from the sun, and a scarf can keep you warm on cool evenings.

A travel-sized bag is perfect for carrying your essentials, and a pair of sunglasses will help shield your eyes from the glare.

I’m a Boho Bag gal myself. The bigger, the better because I can squeeze so much into those bags.

I have everything I may need on the plane or in the car nearby but can slip the handles of the bag over my suitcase and wheel away.

A good bag or purse that has many pockets both inside and outside the bag is best. That allows you to easily secure your phone, lip balm, ticket, and more within easy reach when you need it until you get to your final destination.

With these travel outfit ideas and helpful tips, you’ll be comfortable and stylish on your next trip. Pack your bags and get ready for an adventure. You deserve it.

Why Trust PEOPLE?

People / Getty / Gwyneth Paltrow / Instagram

As a travel writer, my suitcase is nearly always half-packed. Long flights demand comfort, but new sights and cities demand style . To complicate matters, I’m a maximalist, so traditional travel advice to cram a small capsule wardrobe into a backpack never quite appeals to me, even if I have to fight the luggage scale when checking in for my flight.

Packing properly for any trip can be daunting, whether you’re throwing together a duffel for a girls’ weekend or filling a checked bag  for a multi-month jaunt all over Europe. Still, my adventures across multiple countries, climates, and time zones taught me to reach for certain staples — like comfortable walking shoes and a reliable crossbody purse — time and time again. While nailing down my perfect travel wardrobe, I turned to on-the-go celebrities like Taylor Swift and Emily Blunt for inspiration.

A packing list comprised of versatile dresses, flowy pants, maxi skirts, and breezy shirts can go a long way — literally. Read on for the best celeb-inspired travel clothes for women to pack for your upcoming trips, as determined by shopper insights, professional style writers, celebrity research, and more.

Dresses give you plenty of bang for your buck when it comes to traveling. For one, they tend to be flexible compared to other clothing items: You can dress them up or down more effectively to target a specific dress code. Chic maxi dresses reigned supreme last summer, and Meghan Markle recently elevated  that trend in a silky high-neck maxi dress — stylish enough for a formal engagement but breezy enough for an afternoon in the sun.

Dresses of varying lengths also tend to be more conducive to layering. While summer may be “sundress season,” and we see celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow reaching for transitional midi styles in spring, the right travel dress can be an effective staple in your winter wardrobe, too. You can keep the style in your cold-weather repertoire by winterizing the look like Emily Ratajkowski . Opt for a darker colorway, chunky boots, and maybe a sweater.

Shop any of these styles starting at just $30

The Drop Women’s Britt Tiered Maxi Tent Dress

This tiered maxi dress has an array of 1,900+ perfect five-star ratings on Amazon for its airiness — and rave reviews from multiple PEOPLE writers . It’s such a classic silhouette for all occasions, and it has the most coveted design detail on dresses: pockets. Shoppers do note that there’s little stretch, so consider your bust size when ordering.

Sizes: XXS–5X | Materials: 100% Tencel Lyocell | Colors: 18

Editors Say

“I bought this maxi dress from The Drop when it was on sale, and I’m going to buy two more at full price — that’s how much I love it. In fact, I have to force myself not to wear it multiple times a week. It’s comfortable, lightweight, and flattering for my short, curvy body. It even has pockets and adjustable straps that can be crossed in the back. The best part, though? I don’t have to wear a bra!” — Kayla Kitts , shopping editor

Linen Roll Tab Dollman Midi Dress

Chico's

An ankle-skimming midi always comes in handy, and a linen fabric is an excellent choice for temperature regulation: cooling in warmer climates yet cozy in cooler ones. This relaxed, button-down frock comes in whimsical watermelon and khaki hues. It even has adjustable, oversized sleeves for added comfort.

Sizes: XS–XL | Materials: 100% linen | Colors: 2

Skinny Strap Seamless Mini Slip

Free People

Free People excels in lightweight, flattering, multi-use dresses. Most pieces in their slip category — like this itty-bitty seamless LBD — can be worn as an undergarment, dress, or top. (Just tuck it in!) Each slip truly compresses down to nothing, making it the ultimate space-saving garment.

Sizes: XS–XL | Materials: 92% nylon, 8% spandex | Colors: 3

Roxy Golden Dawn Dress

Everybody needs a comfortable floral sundress to throw on in warmer climates, especially after a sunburn. Whether you frequent the beach in your travels or just want something soft that wears in well over time, this Roxy pick is built for comfort.

Available Sizes: M, L | Materials: Viscose | Colors: 1

Tencel Jersey Tank Maxi Dress

This Quince pick has a soft, comfy stretch ideal for long days on your feet, and is even made of biodegradable fabric. With six colorways and a  lightweight and sleeveless silhouette, this dress almost guarantees plenty of use.

Sizes: XS–XL | Materials: Tencel, spandex | Colors: 6

The right flowy pants can make the ultimate base layer, whether you’re on a nine-hour flight or dressing to the nines. Loose, roomier pants have been all the rage this year, with celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence , Zendaya , and Emily Blunt all sporting various wide-leg styles.

Similarly, breezy white maxi skirts are majorly on trend right now (and always), stylist Liz Teich told PEOPLE. Just look at Katie Holmes stepping out in NYC. She exemplifies how airy styles can be  great for warmer weather, but still look polished. Plus, the lighter fabrics are literally lighter in your bag, so why not throw in another?

Tronjori High Waist Casual Wide Leg Palazzo Pants

This Amazon pick embodies the quintessential palazzo pant we’ve all bookmarked on Pinterest. The wide leg and high waist are timeless, and the pair comes in a whopping 31 different colorways, plus tall and petite variations.

Sizes: XS–XXL, short and long options | Materials: Polyester | Colors: 31

Hermoza Rachel Skirt Dress

While this one’s more of a splurge, its multifunctionality makes it a worthy all-in-one piece for any vacation. As a frequent traveler and Hawai’i resident, I was absolutely flabbergasted (and fascinated) when I found out this floral maxi skirt/dress hybrid is made of durable swimsuit material.

Pair it with the matching swimsuit top for a striking two-piece set by the beach, wear it as a vibrant maxi dress to dinner, or style the skirt alone with a gauzy button-down and sandals for a jaunt through town. Of course, I love how convenient it is to wash and dry for travels, too.

Sizes: XS–L | Materials: Polyester, elastane | Colors: 1

Nashalyly Chiffon High-Waisted Pleated Skirt

This shopper-favorite maxi skirt has over 5,000 five-star ratings from Amazon customers, who note that you’ll want to size up for the best fit. Reviewers appreciate the skirt’s easy movement, comfortable elastic waist, and how many outfits they can build with it.

Sizes: S–3XL | Materials: Chiffon | Colors: 44

Daily Practice by Anthropologie Parachute Pants

Anthropologie

These pants are my personal go-to. I wear them to work in, to work out in, and to casual gatherings and nights out with friends. Most crucially, I wear them every single time I pass through an airport. They’re incredibly comfortable, lightweight (I tend to overheat on travel days), and adaptable, with plenty of pockets for easy ID and passport access. I’ve bought them in multiple colors, from neutrals to bolds.

Sizes: XXS–3X plus petite sizing | Materials: Nylon | Colors: 9

Even if you’re wearing the same pair of jeans day in, day out for the duration of your ten-day stint to Australia, Greece, or wherever you’re traveling, the right top can make a similar foundation feel like an entirely different look. First, you’ll want a collection of sleek, basic tanks and tops for ultimate versatility. Or perhaps a nautical, striped button down, ideally summoning visions of boat days and beachside barbecues. (Oh, and easy sun protection.) As Jessica Alba proves with white jeans and coordinating sneakers, the look is seasonal and sophisticated .

And is there anything better than wearing a delicate eyelet blouse on a hot summer day? A breezy blouse can serve as a dressy swimsuit cover-up at the beach. It can also keep your wardrobe work-friendly while on a Zoom meeting across time zones, or give a romantic vibe during date night.

Wear it loose like Taylor Swift out for a summer walk, or tucked in like Jennifer Aniston at dinner in Paris. Either way, a casual blouse might just be a better companion on your vacation than your plus one.

Wild Fable Cap Sleeve Ruched Side Seam T-Shirt

This pullover top can be styled in a variety of ways, making it a must-have on any trip with limited packing space. The subtle side ruching and cap sleeve add some feminine detail that dress it up for more elevated occasions, but it’s definitely casual enough to rock on a daily basis. As another PEOPLE writer noted , the cap sleeve is an ideal middle ground between a tank and short sleeve — which might be why Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Swift are so fond of the style.

Sizes: XXS–4X | Materials: Recycled polyester, spandex | Colors: 4

H&M Top with Eyelet Embroidery Sleeves

A simple eyelet short-sleeve top can serve you on many occasions, whether jetting off on a day trip or trekking to your regular weekend brunch spot. At only $20, this adorable H&M puff-sleeve is just frothy enough to add a little je ne sais quoi , but has a  French simplicity at its core.

Sizes: XS–XXL | Materials: 100% cotton | Colors: 3

Gap Modern Mock Neck

Deal alert.

This Gap tank is up to 60 percent off in a range of neutral and stripe patterns for a limited time.

There’s never a bad time to stock up on flattering basics like this Gap tank. Available in regular, tall, and petite sizes, this Meghan Markle -esque mock-neck top has a straight silhouette and slim fit, and truly goes with everything .

Sizes: XXS–XXL, in regular, tall, and petite | Materials: 58% cotton, 39% modal, 3% spandex | Colors: 5

AE Perfect Button-Up Shirt

American Eagle

Right now, this American Eagle button-up is 60 percent off in all colors.

Okay, we’ll admit it: We never quite got over the coastal grandmother trend. And why should we? The whole point is that it’s timeless, classic, and elegant whether you’re going all-in on a preppy look or simply throwing on a striped button-down as a cover-up after the beach. This soft, effortless shirt has a slightly oversized fit for extra comfort.

Sizes: XXS–XXL | Materials: 100% cotton | Colors: 8

The Other Travel Clothes You’re Forgetting

Tops? Check. Flowy pants and skirts? Check. Dresses that you can wear out or treat as a cover-up? Practically the daily uniform. Still, there are a few other staples you’ll want to make sure you have on hand, too. It’s an oft-repeated cliché, but layering truly is key.

Levi’s Womens 501 Original Jean Shorts

These Levi’s shorts are currently 40 percent off at Amazon.

Jean shorts are essential for casual days strolling through a city or impromptu meetups with friends. Throw them on over a sleek swimsuit or break them out in transitional weather. And this isn’t the only Levi’s denim we’re fond of — two of its most popular jeans hold space in our team’s closets, too.

Sizes: 23–39 | Materials: Denim | Colors: 44

AE Long Weekend Crewneck Sweater

This American Eagle Crewneck Sweater is 60 percent off for a limited time.

A layerable neutral sweater is another travel must-have, especially in that frigid airplane air conditioning. Similarly, for those long stretches away from home, an oversized sweater can also be a cuddly comfort for when you’re missing your own bed.

Sizes: XXS–L | Materials: Cotton | Colors: 1

How to Pack the Best Travel Clothes

When building your travel wardrobe, you’ll want to consider factors like trip duration, climate, and more. Do you want year-round items or would you rather commit to rotating your staples seasonally? Will you have access to laundry? (If not, you’ll want to opt for fabrics that wick away odor and sweat so you can get multiple wears out of each item.) Are there sights or situations that have etiquette requirements and dress codes requiring a certain amount of coverage?

Some personal guidance as a travel expert: Many packing guides might swear by a neutral, minimalist capsule wardrobe for ultimate frequency of wear, but you shouldn’t be afraid to go maximalist either. If you pick comfortable, durable pieces, you’ll still get more use from those “singular” funky outfits than you expect — and your camera roll will thank you for choosing the pieces you actually love most. Similarly, accessories like bold jewelry or belts generally take up very little luggage real estate but go a long way in elevating any look. Might as well add some pizzazz to your Pisa pic, right?

And don’t forget the packing cubes and travel organizers to get the most space out of your carry-on suitcase , either.

Flowy Dresses, Linen Pants, and More Summer Travel Fashion Finds Are Up to 50% Off at Nordstrom

travel outfit over 50

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

While I love my hectic travel schedule, it’s a constant struggle to find new comfy styles that look good, pack easily, and are versatile enough to style in fresh ways. With several summer trips on the horizon, I’ve been on the hunt for dresses, pants, and walking shoes that fit the bill.

Luckily, Nordstrom just dropped tons of summer pieces from shopper-loved brands like Free People, Sam Edelman, and more. I’m grabbing linen pants , lightweight cardigans , and slide sandals to pack for my three upcoming trips while they’re on sale. Keep scrolling to browse the 13 designs I’m adding to my own cart for up to 50 percent off.

  • Billabong Wild Pursuit Short Overalls , $40 (originally $56)

  • Sam Edelman Bridget Slide Sandal , $50 (originally $130)
  • Free People Robyn Cotton Blend Crop Cardigan , from $59 (originally $98)

  • B.P. Twill Short Overalls , $30 (originally $60)
  • Faherty Dream Organic Cotton Gauze Midi Dress , $120 (originally $218)

B.P. Twill Short Overalls

Overalls are a fun style to mix in when you’ve tired of the same flowy dresses in your suitcase. This 60 percent-off design is no exception. In fact, they have a five-star rating, which shoppers chalked up to their “large deep pockets” and “comfortable material.” One person even added that they “can’t wait to wear” the overalls on their “next trip.” The cotton-spandex fabric has the perfect stretch and oversized feel, while the square neck and adjustable straps make it a flattering choice.

Caslon Stripe Wide-Leg Linen Blend Pants

Everyone needs a casual yet comfy pair of linen pants, especially if you’re heading to a beach this summer. While I’m a fan of several Caslon wide-leg styles, including this classic black pair from the brand, this striped linen blend design is at the top of my wish list right now. One customer called them the “perfect” summer pants and said they’re planning to pack them for “Europe this summer,” while another added that the “material is nicer” than other linen styles they own and doesn’t “appear to wrinkle.”

Sam Edelman Bay Cutout Slide Sandal

For as long as I can remember, these Sam Edelman slides have been a staple in my summer wardrobe. In fact, I’ved owned the sandals in three different colors. They’re so easy to toss on when you’re headed out the door, and the design offers an elevated look. Plus, the style comes in nine on-sale colors as well as six full-priced shades. Shoppers raved about the “comfortable” shoes, and said they have “enough cushion and support for easy walking.

Faherty Dream Organic Cotton Gauze Midi Dress

This organic cotton midi dress was practically made for summer travel. The breezy style is so easy to toss on after a day at the beach or to wear during a flight. The V-neck provides a flattering design while the three-quarter sleeves add a little extra coverage for chillier summer nights. The on-sale white color is easy to style for any occasion: You can dress it up with a pair of heels and accessories, or toss on casual sneakers or sandals for a low-key evening.

Head over to Nordstrom’s site to shop the sale for yourself, or keep reading for more of my personal favorites, including breezy pants, comfy sandals, and more.
