- The 5 main types of breakdown cover explained
The 5 Main Types of Breakdown Cover Explained
Many or all of the products and brands we promote and feature including our ‘Partner Spotlights’ are from our partners who compensate us. However, this does not influence our editorial opinion found in articles, reviews and our ‘Best’ tables. Our opinion is our own. Read more on our methodology here .
Breakdown cover can seem like a bit of a riddle at times, but it doesn’t have to be a mystery. By understanding the different types of breakdown cover and how they relate to your needs, you’ll be perfectly placed to select the most suitable policy. Better awareness of your options can help you to save money and enjoy the right level of protection at the same time.
» MORE: What is breakdown cover?
There are five main types of breakdown cover, which we will explain in more detail below:
Roadside Assistance Breakdown Cover
National recovery breakdown cover, home start breakdown cover, onward travel breakdown cover, european breakdown cover, compare breakdown cover.
Use our comparison table to find breakdown cover from leading providers
Roadside Assistance is the most basic form of breakdown cover; indeed, providers often refer to it as a basic policy.
As it sounds, Roadside Assistance cover will provide help to drivers by the side of the road should they break down. Assistance will typically come in the form of an engineer who will attempt to repair your car at the scene. If repairs aren’t possible, your car will be towed to a nearby garage chosen by your breakdown provider (within a certain radius of the incident), where you can arrange to collect it as soon as it’s fixed. The cost of any replacement parts the engineer may use, or any repairs that need to be made at the garage, will not usually be covered under this breakdown policy.
Furthermore, standard Roadside Assistance may not cover you if you break down at home or close to home (often within approximately ¼ of a mile). You may be able to request assistance but only for an additional fee.
Do I need Roadside Assistance?
For drivers who regularly traverse the highways and byways of the United Kingdom, National Recovery is a useful breakdown service. As with Roadside Assistance, if you breakdown anywhere in the UK, an engineer will come to your aid and attempt a roadside repair on your vehicle.
However, rather than being limited to being taken to a nearby garage if your car can’t be fixed by the road, National Recovery breakdown cover enables you and your car to be taken to any destination in the UK for repair.
This means you can get taken to a garage and location of your choice, whether it’s your home or any other destination, which could help to minimise the disruption to your travel plans.
Do I need National Recovery?
Your car is as likely to fail to start at home as it is to breakdown on the road, especially on cold, wet and icy winter mornings. This is because the likelihood of experiencing car battery problems or other difficulties increases when it has been sitting in the driveway all night. This problem only gets worse as your car gets older and racks up more miles.
Home Start (also called at-home) cover means, should you break down at home, or within a specified distance of your home (distance cap varies by policy), your provider will send an engineer to attempt to kick start your vehicle. If it is not possible to restart your car, most Home Start policies will include a tow service to a garage local to your address.
You can choose to add Home Start as an optional extra to most basic policies, as many Roadside Assistance or National Recovery policies won’t cover breakdowns within a certain distance of your home as standard.
Do I need Home Start?
If you’re stranded with a broken-down car far from your destination, Onward Travel cover will help you to continue on your journey. Each policy differs, but there are some key similarities between providers.
Typically, if your car needs repairing at a garage and you still need to complete your journey, an alternative means of travel or transportation will be made available, either through a hire car or by covering the costs of public transport. Some policies will also cover overnight accommodation costs, up to a certain amount.
Do I need Onward Travel?
This is the only form of breakdown cover tailored to European travel. Whether you travel to the continent regularly for business or you’re simply there on holiday, you’ll need breakdown cover to get you back up and running in case of a breakdown or emergency.
European cover is flexible, and you can typically tweak it to match your circumstances. If you travel infrequently, say once or twice a year, a single trip policy may be suitable. If, however, you regularly go to Europe, you might consider taking out an annual policy.
European policies will often include hotel accommodation or a hire car provision, which is crucial when breakdowns occur away from, or en route to, your destination. Some breakdown providers can also help with any language barriers by giving you access to an English-speaking helpline and, if needed, may help you and your vehicle get back to the UK if you are experiencing problems.

Cover for yourself or your vehicle?
In addition to the above levels of breakdown cover, you can also choose between personal and vehicle breakdown cover.
As the names suggest, personal breakdown cover will cover the individual, whatever car they are in, while vehicle breakdown cover will only cover one specific vehicle. Most providers will also allow you to get cover for multiple people or vehicles under one policy.

Breakdown cover optional extras
With most providers you will be able to supplement your breakdown cover with some additional policies. Each provider may call them by slightly different names, but some common optional extras include:
Key replacement
If your keys are stolen, damaged or simply lost, this cover can help you to replace them. Details will vary between providers, but some may offer you the use of a hire car while you wait for the issue to be fixed. Some car insurance policies also offer this cover as an optional extra.
Tyre replacement
Tyre damage may not always be covered under a standard breakdown cover policy, but this extra cover can help with the repair or replacement of a tyre should you get a puncture or a flat.
Misfuel cover
This will cover you if you mistakenly fill up your car with the wrong fuel. It can cover the costs of towing, draining the tank, and other work needed to get you back on the road. Some car insurance policies offer this as an optional add-on too.
Battery replacement
If your battery goes flat or has a fault, this policy covers the costs of fitting a new battery to your car. Terms and exclusions will vary between providers.
Parts and labour
This policy can help to cover the cost of replacement parts and any garage work that is not covered under most standard breakdown policies. However, there will usually be a cap on how much you can claim at one time.
What to remember when choosing a breakdown policy
With such a range of breakdown policy bundles available, each containing a different combination of cover options, it’s important to work out which cover is necessary, and which cover you may not require. Evaluate your needs carefully, while also factoring in both the short term and long-term financial implications of each policy.

What details do I have to provide if my vehicle breaks down?

How many callouts can I make?

The AA Breakdown Cover Review
The AA is one of the UK’s most recognised breakdown cover providers.
Based on over 28,000 reviews.
The AA has been helping drivers and other road users repair their vehicles since 1905. In that time, it’s become an institution within the country. With many other breakdown cover companies in the UK offering a similar service, does the AA still reign supreme?
This guide reviews the services offered by the AA to see how it holds up and if it is still the best UK breakdown cover provider of choice.
What do you get with the AA?
When you get a membership with the AA, you’ll receive many features, depending on your membership level.
For the basic membership, you’ll get 24/7 cover for breakdowns that happen over a ¼ mile from your home. You’ll also be able to get unlimited call-outs, and they have a dedicated accident service called accident assist.
In addition to this standard level of service, you’ll also be able to add extra features, choosing the ones that best suit your needs and circumstances. You can add things like European breakdown cover and key or tyre replacement.
What don't you get with the AA?
There are a few exceptions when it comes to AA breakdown cover. It’s good to be aware of the situations in which your cover isn’t eligible before becoming an AA member.
Despite having accident assistance, you won’t be covered for any roadside assistance if your breakdown involves the emergency services, such as the police or ambulance. You also won’t be covered for any routine maintenance repairs.
Finally, if you need regular call-outs for the same fault, the AA will not cover this. So, if you constantly have issues with your battery that requires roadside assistance, it’s best to get the issue fully repaired to stop you from needing assistance.
How much does The AA breakdown cover cost?
The cost of The AA cover will vary depending on the breakdown cover you choose.
Like other breakdown services, the cover you get is broken into tiers known as levels. The basic level is the cheapest but will lack additional benefits and protection that could be useful. As you increase through the levels, the greater the cost.
It’s also possible to add extra features called add-ons to your cover. These can include things like European breakdown cover, key replacement and more. Each add-on will be individually priced and added to your policies monthly or annual cost.
The AA’s basic level cover, which includes roadside assistance, can cost £79 a year for personal cover. Its highest level cover, which includes roadside assistance, at-home servicing, national recovery, and onward travel, can cost £199.
This price range makes the AA one of the more expensive breakdown services. When comparing its top-level service, it’s over £20 more than RAC per year.
However, the AA could be the best option if you’re looking for basic cover. Many other breakdown providers include at-home cover in their standard packages, increasing the costs. Other providers can charge over £100 a year for their basic level cover, so if you’re happy to have a stripped-back version of breakdown cover that includes just the essentials, then the AA may be the best choice for you.
How long should you wait for The AA roadside recovery?
The AA can be considered one of, if not the fastest, breakdown recovery service. This means that when you use the AA, you usually won’t be waiting for long to have your vehicle seen to.
A reported 81.96% of call-outs were completed within the hour, and this statistic dwarfs some of the other most well-known breakdown services.
In fact, the average wait time for roadside assistance or roadside recovery from the AA is around 4o minutes. This allows members to have their car repaired quickly to continue the rest of their journey.
Waiting on the side of the road near a broken-down car is dangerous, especially if it’s on the hard shoulder of a motorway. Reducing the time you have to wait on the roadside decreases the risk of accidents. This makes The AA one of the safest breakdown cover providers, as on average, you won’t be waiting that long for assistance.
When waiting for roadside assistance, it’s advised to leave your vehicle and stand a few meters away from it. This can help protect you in case another road user accidentally crashes into the back of your broken-down car. To protect yourself further, it’s also a good idea to carry a high-vis vest so that you can easily be spotted by cars and other vehicles.
Can you use The AA if you're not a member?
Much like most breakdown cover services, you’ll need to be a member to get the full scope of benefits and services from The AA. However, if you’re not currently an AA member, you can still call them and get roadside assistance whenever you need it.
When using the AA without being a member, you will be charged for the services you use, and these costs will likely be more than you pay through your membership subscription.
The AA isn’t the only breakdown company to offer assistance to non-members, as RAC also provides this. However, the benefit of using the AA is that they’re typically one of the fastest providers in getting someone to come out and help you.
Of course, if you use the AA without being a member, there will be some features and support that you won’t be able to get. For example, you won’t get a hire car to replace your vehicle while it’s in the garage, and you may only be able to use the AA for roadside assistance only. This means you won’t be able to use the AA for at-home services without being a member.
How often does the AA fix cars on the roadside?
There’s no point getting a mechanic to your broken-down car quickly if they cannot fix it. With the AA, they claim that 8/10 cars were able to be fixed at the roadside. This is more than any other breakdown service in the UK.
Having your car repaired on the roadside prevents the need to have your car towed away to a garage, which can be time-consuming and cumbersome. However, if you need to have your car towed away to be repaired at a garage, the AA will be able to do this as standard.
They’ll be able to transport your vehicle to the nearest garage within a 20-mile radius. This distance is larger than many other breakdown services, allowing you to get to the best garage available.
If the AA cannot fix your car on-site, you may be eligible to claim a refund or price reduction for the call-out.
The AA breakdown cover pros and cons
On the whole, the AA is one of the best options regarding breakdown cover in the UK. It has a lot of benefits that make the service stand out when compared to its competitors. However, the AA has a few flaws that let it down and prevent it from being a perfect breakdown cover provider.
- The AA lets you mix and match their services, allowing you to build a policy that is best tailored to you. Doing this means that you're only paying for the cover that you want.
- You get unlimited call-outs with the AA, meaning that you can have peace of mind if you happen to break down multiple times a year.
- Unlike some other providers, you get cover even if the breakdown issue was due to a lack of maintenance. This means that if you forget to change your oil, you won't be punished, and you'll still get cover.
- While providing one of the most comprehensive breakdown cover, the AA is one of the most expensive providers in the UK.
- You won't get cover if you put the wrong fuel in your car, such as filling up with diesel if you drive a petrol car.
- They only cover £5 for any parts used in repairs. This means that you'll have to pay for any parts that cost more than this, which is likely.
The AA Breakdown Cover Review: The Verdict
The AA is one of the oldest and most beloved breakdown cover providers in the UK. The company uses its experience to provide a comprehensive and robust breakdown service that makes it one of the best in the UK.
Mixing and matching the services you want allows you to build a bespoke policy that best suits you.
The AA is the fastest regarding roadside assistance and has the highest success rate of getting your vehicle fixed without having to go to the garage.
However, this quality means it’s one of the most expensive breakdown cover providers available. If its price falls within your budget, then there are not many better options, although if it’s too expensive, there are suitable alternatives that will provide a decent service for a better price.
All in all, the AA is a great breakdown cover provider and one that you should consider when looking for your own policy.

Journey to Moscow
Welcome to Moscow - the capital of Russia, its political, scientific, historical, architectural and business centre, from which power and might of the Russian state developed.
Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!
I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.
Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.
Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow
Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.
Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.
No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.
As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.
Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street
Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line
As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.
The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.
How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country
Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.
Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.
Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.
Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City
Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line
Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.
Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing
If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.
The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.
How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam
The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.
Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.
The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.
Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower
Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line
VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.
Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches
First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.
A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.
I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).
Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.
Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses
Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line
I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.
During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.
20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World
There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.
Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.
You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.
12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France
If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.
The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.
How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning
Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.
Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.
Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring
Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.
Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.
Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary
I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.
You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary
Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.
Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.
Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds
Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line
Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.
How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe
The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.
All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.
Conclusion and Recommendations
To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Never been to Moscow or Russia but my family has. Many great spots and a lot of culture. Your itinerary sounds fantastic and covers a lot despite it is only a short period of time.
What was their favourite thing about Russia?

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.
Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!
Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…
