Dulahazara safari park – Cox’s Bazar

Dulahazra safari park is located in Dulahazara , Chakaria , Cox’s Bazar of Bangladesh. It is also known as Dulhazara or Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park . It’s around an hour of road journey from Cox’s Bazar district. This safari park comprises natural plants and few animals (inside as a zoo). Only the Elephant and the Hippopotamus are placed in open places. The safari park area is around 9 square kilometer. Right now the park has animals from 165 species [ 1 ]. Main attractions from the safari park are the Black bears, Peacocks, Crocodile, Wild elephant, Hippopotamus, Tiger, Lion, Python, etc. I liked the white peacock when I was there.

There are two options for you to enjoy the Dulhazra safari park. One is the transportation facility of the park itself, and the other one is by your own feet. I tried the first one, but I think walking would be the best enjoyment for this safari park. Using transport you have a limited time for each of the spots. But while walking there is no limitation. Also you can take your own vehicles with you by paying fees to the safari park authority. That case you’d have control over your timing to see each of the animals.

There are several attractions inside Dulhazra safari park. After entering inside the park you’d find the orchid collection section, and a museum. Both are equally attractive. After that just a while ahead you’d have a cage of monkeys (that I don’t like), and a cage of python. After that you have to use vehicles (or walking).

To me another attraction of the safari park was the white peacock, and the Indian peacock. Both are equally beautiful. The Indian peacock is the colorful one and very bright, whereas the white one is the rare one (a kind of novelty). That was my first time seeing a white peacock in my life. Thanks to the Dulhazra safari park. There are some other birds available just near the peacock’s cage. You could spend plenty of time around the birds. Most of them are colorful and not from Bangladesh.

After that I went towards the elephants and hippopotamus which were in an open place. They were not threatening to the tourists. I watched them from afar. Also there are tigers, lions, and bears inside the zoo for you. If you haven’t seen them before then it would be a nice experience for you.

There is a watchtower available around the 10th floor. If you can get to the top of the tower you’d enjoy the vast ocean of green plants around you. It’s a lovely view from the top of the tower. The climbing is a bit tiresome but after climbing several hundred stairs you’d find the scene around you is heavenly.

It would be better to have a rented car to go Dulhazar safari park as most of the tourists visit Cox’s Bazar as a group. This safari park is only 40 kilometer from the Cox’s bazar. I didn’t use local bus services but there should be some. Look for that around the bus stoppages in Cox’s Bazar town. GPS Coordinate of Dulhazra safari park is ( 21°40’04.8″N, 92°04’49.2″E ).

Opening and closing time:

Not sure which day the Dulhazara safari park remains closed. But it remains open from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Hopefully it would be open during Friday and Saturday as those are the weekend days in Bangladesh. Ticket price for per adult is 20 Taka (entry fee can vary based on student or children). The parking fee for the vehicle is between 50-100 Taka (as of year 2010).

Where to stay:

Cox’s Bazar is the most busiest tourist destination from Bangladesh. There are numerous hotels around the city which can accommodate hundreds of thousands of visitors. Look for the  list of hotels in Cox’s Bazar here . After visiting the Dulhazra safari park it would be wise to stay in Cox’s bazar town.

Where to eat:

Cox’s Bazar is a nice place to taste the sea fishes from Bangladesh. You’d find plenty of restaurants from the town which serve Pomfret, Koral, Lobsters, and many other sea fishes. Those are really tasty and mouth watering. I tried the restaurants like Niribili, Dhanshiri, Poushi, etc from Cox’s Bazar. To me the food from all of those restaurants tasted more or less the same. Compared to the price the Poushi was a bit cheaper.

Ramu would be on your way to Dulhazara. You could give a pause at Ramu to see the  Buddhist temple  from there.

Dulahazara Safari Park

Dulahajra Safari Park  is a natural reserve forest at Dulahajra in Cox's Bazar district. The Safari park is situated on the east side of the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway. It is located 50 km away from Cox's Bazar city, just 10 kilometers away from Chakaria Bus stand. 

There are lions, tigers, many species of deer, hanuman, bear, peacocks, wild boar, many species of birds, snakes, crocodiles, hippo, monkeys, elephants, forest cock, fishing cat, leopard in this safari park. The beautiful scenery of nature and animal wanderings can easily be enjoyed through multiple observation towers located here.

Large trees of different species and rare and medicinal plants are present in this park. The area of the Safari Park is about 900 hectares of land. Although some animals are captured in the cage, most animals in this park have lots of open spaces for wandering. For tourists, there is a restroom and dormitory in the park.

This Safari Park has also become an eco-tourism spot in Bangladesh. You can enjoy the free wildlife here. On the left side of the main gate, the description of various places in the park and a map of Bangladesh are available. This Safari Park is getting popularity day by day. In the tourism season, many tourists arrange picnics in various locations in the park.

The park is open for visitors from 9 am to 6 pm every day except for Wednesdays. Entry fee is 10 taka for adult and 5 taka for children.

How to go Dulahazara Safari Park:

From Dhaka, you can travel by bus or plane. If you want to travel by bus then you go to Arambag Bus Stand, there too many bus services available for Cox’s Bazar like as S. Alam, Saudia Travels, Santmartin Travels, Sohag Travels, Greenline Poribohan, etc. Both AC and Non-AC bus services are available.

Start your journey from Arambag when you chose a non-AC bus the ticket price for one person is around 800 to 1000 BDT and the AC bus ticket price for one person is around 1500 to 2500 BDT

The best time for traveling is the night because you can fall asleep and never feel tired in the early morning the bus reaches Cox’s Bazar,Chokoriya bus stand from there you can hire a CNG to Dulhazra Safari Park. You can also buy tickets to enter in the park costs around 50 TK per persons. And for the Safari bus you can spend around 200 TK per persons but it including snacks.

By plane, first, you go to Shahjalal International Airport Domestic side and purchase a ticket the ticket price is around 3500 to 4500 BDT per person but its time consuming and you can also enjoy the air travel experience. Dulahazra Park is home to at least 4,000 animals of 165 species. After the new government took over in January 2007, joint forces rescued many of these new residents of the park during their drives at houses and establishments owned by graft suspects. Many individuals also ‘donated’ some of the animals to the park during this period. The seized and donated animals recently sent to the park include 90 spotted deer (chital), 42 barking deer (maya, a species of muntjac deer), three sambar deer, one freshwater crocodile, one saltwater crocodile, nine black bear, four pythons, 17 peacocks, 19 Turkish pheasants and two emus. Other source of animale includes the Dhaka Zoo. While the animal population in Dhaka zoo has increased over the years due to their breeding, the Dhaka zoo donates a number of lions and tigers to the Dulhazra Safari Park.

Need more improvement

This park management failed to keep the standard they introduced during the inauguration period. Now they have almost lost the main attractiveness of place.

Safari Park with amazing experience

Its very neat to Coxsbazar but far from Chittagong. You can go there when you are on the way to Coxsbazar. Beautiful place. all nature around.

It could be better than present condition

Dulahazra Safari park is at only 40 minute distance by bus from Bangladesh's biggest tourist attraction Cox's Bazar sea beach. So it it could be as big attraction as Cox's bazar. But its gradually loo...
