Namib Desert sunset

Day 1 | Windhoek – Namib Desert

Distance approx. 340 km; driving time approx. 4 hours

Windhoek – Namib Desert

A cheerful guide greets you in the morning at either your hotel or the Windhoek airport for your 10 day Namibia tour. After a short safari briefing, you climb into your vehicle and your adventure can begin. You leave Namibia’s capital behind and drive through the many hills of the Khomas region. If there is enough time, you can even drive along one of the beautiful passes which will bring you to the Namib-Naukluft region. A stop at the settlement of Solitaire allows you to try their famous apple pie (optional) before arriving at your accommodation for the next two nights, the Elegant Desert Camp. In the afternoon, you can join the lodge’s sundowner drive (optional), after which dinner can be enjoyed under the stars.

Morning light in Sossusvlei on 10 day Namibia tour

Day 2 | Namib Desert

Distance approx. 200 km; driving time approx. 3 hours

The Namib Desert is the oldest desert in the world and to watch the magical morning light is something truly unforgettable. Therefore, you are up and going before the sun today. Once in the Namib-Naukluft Park, your guide will take you to a quiet dune, away from the other tourists, to enjoy the beautiful morning light. After a picnic breakfast, you drive deeper into the desert, to the Deadvlei and Sossusvlei area. You traverse over a stretch of off-road terrain, but this assignment is easily mastered by your 4×4 vehicle and your guide. The Deadvlei clay pan creates a dreamlike landscape and you have enough time to soak in the atmosphere and take some incredible photos. A little further lies the Sesriem canyon. You are encouraged to step into the canyon and explore the now dry river gorge. After an eventful day, you return to your camp to relax for the rest of the afternoon and enjoy a delicious dinner in the evening.

Swakopmund desert and ocean

Day 3 | Namib Desert – Swakopmund

Distance approx. 370 km; driving time approx. 4 hours

Namib Desert – Swakopmund

A more relaxed start to the day can be expected before you make your way through the Gaub and Kuiseb canyons. The drive is a scenic one, as is so often the case in Namibia. Just as you believe you have accustomed yourself to your arid surroundings, you begin to see the Atlantic Ocean on the horizon. You make a short stop at the Walvis Bay lagoon to view the flamingos and then continue your journey along a road with the ocean to your one side and the desert to your other. Your destination is Swakopmund. Many of its buildings show a strong German architectural influence and you are welcome to explore the town at your leisure. In the evening, you can try one of the many excellent restaurants in town or along the coast (optional). You overnight at the Organic Stay Guesthouse.

Day 4 | Swakopmund

The day is yours to spend as you please. Swakopmund is called Namibia’s adventure capital and for good reason. It offers so many wonderful activities that you are sure to find something perfect for you. A catamaran tour, a desert safari or a quad bike tour are only a few of the options available (all optional). Perhaps you would rather walk along the beachfront, explore some of the shops in Swakopmund and top it all off with a slice of German cake at one of the charming bakeries. Swakopmund also has some very interesting museums which can be visited. Enjoy your day of leisure and spend another night at the Organic Stay Guesthouse.

Damaraland hill landscape sunset

Day 5 | Swakopmund – Skeleton Coast – Damaraland

Distance approx. 470 km; driving time approx. 6 hours

Swakopmund – Skeleton Coast – Damaraland

Start the day by driving along the infamous Skeleton Coast of Namibia. Many a ship has run aground on this harsh stretch of coastline and you make a stop at one of these unfortunate ships, viewable from the shoreline. You drive further along the coast until Cape Cross, where you are greeted by the sight of over two hundred thousand cape fur seals. An impressive sight! Onwards along the rugged Skeleton Coast, you may feel the isolation that accompanies this baren land. It is hostile and yet, it is also beautiful – something difficult to explain in words and is rather felt. You turn off the coastal road just before Torra Bay and make your way into the Damaraland. In the afternoon, you will arrive at your camp for a good night’s rest, the Malansrus Tented Camp.

Giraffes Etosha on 10 day Namibia tour

Day 6 | Damaraland – Etosha National Park

Distance approx. 370 km; driving time approx. 4.5 hours

Damaraland – Etosha National Park

The Damaraland covers a vast expanse of land in which there is much to see and do. Today, you may decide which attraction interests you the most. You may decide to visit Twyfelfontein, Namibia’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site is famous for its collection of over 2 500 rock engravings, dating back to between 2 000 and 6 000 years ago. Your guide knows a location where the petroglyphs are well preserved, away from the main tourist locations. Alternatively, you could visit the Petrified Forest, a local guide will show you tree trunks that are approximately 260 million years old. They have been petrified and now resemble stone. The site also provides an excellent opportunity to admire the national plant of Namibia, the Welwitschia mirabilis. It is generally agreed that many of these fascinating and bizarre looking desert plants are over a thousand years old. Following an interesting morning you carry on to the Etosha Safari Camp. You will want to keep the check-in brief though, because in the afternoon you head into the Etosha National Park for an afternoon game drive – the wildlife highlight of your 10 day Namibia tour. Keep your eyes wide open and spot some of the park’s inhabitants. As the evening rolls in, you return to your camp for a mouth-watering dinner.

Lion drinking waterhole Etosha National Park

Day 7 | Etosha National Park

Starting a safari early has all the advantages. It is cool during the morning hours and this is when the animals are most active. You have the whole day to explore the Etosha National Park and get acquainted with the animals who live there. Elephants and lions can often be sighted and if you are fortunate, you might spot a hyena, cheetah or a leopard. On some occasions, you may even come across a rhino. You can never tell what nature has in store for you, but your guide will help you find animals you otherwise would surely have missed. You also have time to visit the Etosha Pan, known in the local Oshiwambo as the ‘Great White Place’. An almost fantastical place, where you are surrounded by the sounds of silence. After a full day of game drives and safari and as the shadows grow longer, you return to the Etosha Safari Camp, where a hearty supper awaits you.

Zebra herd in Etosha National Park savannah

Day 8 | Etosha National Park

Another full day of safari brings fresh game viewing opportunities. Keep your eyes peeled when you enter the park, you might spot something you missed yesterday. Due to the dry landscape of the Etosha National Park, the animals often concentrate at the park’s watering holes. Your guide knows which waterholes are the most popular with the animals. So, sit back and enjoy the wildlife on show. During the course of the safari, you may decide to try and find some of the smaller animals of the Etosha too. Jackal and warthogs are often seen, but if you are lucky you may spot a bat-eared fox or an indomitable honey badger. With plenty of new memories to treasure, you exit the Etosha National Park at the Von Lindequist Gate in the east and continue to the Onguma Bush Camp for the night. Enjoy your dinner whilst overlooking the camp’s waterhole.

Day 9 | Etosha National Park – Waterberg Area

Distance approx. 430 km; driving time approx. 5 hours

Etosha National Park – Waterberg Area

After a delicious breakfast whilst overlooking the camp’s waterhole, you head on towards the Waterberg region. Along the way, you stop at the Cheetah Conservation Fund for a tour of the facilities. During this hour-long tour, you will learn more about the work done by this non-profit organisation, dedicated to protecting and conserving cheetahs in their wild habitats. Following the tour, you will soon arrive at the Waterberg Guest Farm, your accommodation for the night. The remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure, you can opt to relax by the pool or explore the area a little on foot.

Waterberg landscape on 10 day Namibia tour

Day 10 | Waterberg – Windhoek

Distance approx. 300 km; driving time approx. 3 hours

Waterberg – Windhoek

Enjoy one more spectacular sunrise, as you have the option of hiking up the Little Waterberg to catch the sun coming up over the Waterberg Plateau. After a hearty breakfast you begin your return journey. In Okahandja you have the opportunity to purchase some hand-made souvenirs from local woodcarvers’ market before continuing to Windhoek. Once back in Namibia’s capital city, your 10 day Namibia tour will come to an end; your guide will either bring you to your next hotel or to the Windhoek airport, where you say good-bye to Namibia with only the fondest of memories.

8-day namibia safari, description.

This 8-day adventure visits Namibia’s iconic desert sands, spectacular mountain ranges, barren Atlantic coast, and wildlife-rich Etosha National Park. The Namib Desert is a coastal desert that spans the tallest sand dunes in the world, gravel plains, and rough highlands in Namibia and southwest Angola. It runs 1,200 miles (2,900 km) along Namibia’s Atlantic coastline, which bears the same name as this desert. The name “Namib” is derived from a Nama word that means “vast.” Although the desert’s east-west width ranges from 30 to 100 miles (50-160 km), it covers an area of around 31,200 m2 (80,000 km2). The region has reportedly weathered arid or semi-arid conditions for 55 to 80 million years, making it the oldest desert in the world. Diamond, tungsten, and salt mining are all major industries in the Namib.

Itinary in details

Day1 arrival in windhoek.

Your guide will pick you up from the airport in Windhoek and take you to your nearby bush lodging in the Wildlife Sanctuary. The “carnivore tour” game drive this afternoon allows visitors up-close encounters with the sanctuary’s rescued lions, leopards, wild canines, and other animals. Some people prefer to fly into Windhoek and then proceed directly to the Namib Desert without taking into account the likelihood of a flight delay, the effects of jet lag, or the lengthy journey from Windhoek to the desert. Staying near to Windhoek tonight enables you to get used to the dry air of Namibia and establish a calm, healthy routine for the rest of your safari.

Day2 Transfer to Naukluft mountain range & the Namib Desert

Today provides a beautiful picturesque trip to Sesriem and the Namib Desert dunes. You descend into the Naukluft Valley and its breathtaking mountain vistas largely on graded gravel roads. As you go closer to the easternmost point of Namibia’s famous desert dunes, where sand and savannah meet, the scenery doesn’t lose its breathtaking quality. You can frequently observe roving animals from your lodge, including springbok, Oryx, and ostrich. We offer a two-night stay in the area because we want to give you enough of time to take in this arid yet stunning landscape. One of the largest animal reserves in the world, the Namib-Naukluft National Park is located within the Namib Desert and spans nearly 50,000 km2 (19,300 mi2).

Day3 Transfer to Namib Desert, Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei

On these two days your guide will drive you to the desert sands, where you will be able to see the well-known and attractive sites of Dune 45, Dead Vlei, and Sossusvlei. Later on, you can visit Elim Dune and explore Sesriem Canyon while taking in the beauty of an African sunset. You are dwarfed on either side as you descend the Tsauchab River valley by enormous sand dunes. You occasionally pass past groves of dead trees, a reminder of a time when there was a lot more water. You might encounter springbok, ostrich, jackal, and the legendary desert antelope oryx throughout the trip. A short, somewhat bumpy ride through a sandy trail leads to Dead Vlei and Sossusvlei from the end of the tarmac road. A marsh or pan of water is referred to as a vlei in Afrikaans.

Day4 Transfer to Walvis Bay marine wildlife cruise

This morning, you travel a little distance south to Walvis area, where you will learn about the abundant bird and marine life on a fun and informative tour in the protected area. Then there is a lavish meal served on board with locally grown oysters and sparkling wine. The afternoon is yours to explore Swakopmund. During your tour of the bay, you may see dolphins, whales, Cape fur seals, mola molas (sunfish), and, with any luck, orcas (killer whales). Birdwatchers won’t be let down by the opportunity to see pelicans, cormorants, Cape gulls, Caspian Terns, flamingos, and other wader species up close.

Day5 Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei

You will travel north-east across Namibia’s savannah region to Etosha National Park. Your camp’s floodlit waterhole guarantees excellent animal viewing throughout the evening and into the early morning. You’ll spend two nights in Namibia’s premier national park, giving you plenty of opportunity to visit a number of the area’s famous waterholes, which are frequently home to big herds of elephant, oryx, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and springbok. You’ll also be on the lookout for the park’s renowned “black” species, such as its black-maned lions, black rhino, black-backed jackal, and rare black-faced impala.

Day6 Explore Etosha National Park

Etosha, which means “great white place” in the local Oshindonga language, is dominated by the huge mineral pan that bears the same name. The Etosha Pan, which makes up about 25% of the park, is a large, dusty depression of salt and dry clay that only fills during strong rains and even then only temporarily. Nevertheless, there are a number of perennial springs near the pan’s boundaries that attract a lot of fauna and birds. In addition to your game drives with you, we offer an evening game drive with a park ranger this evening. You’ll be on the watch for the park’s diverse nocturnal fauna, both predator and prey, as you travel in a specially designed open-sided 4×4 safari vehicle with a spotlight scanning the bush.

Day7 Departure

Your safari guide will then bid you farewell before returning you to Hosea Kutako International Airport in time for your afternoon flight.

Namibia - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Holidays to Namibia requires a visit to the Etosha National Park

Holidays to Namibia is an ideal for adventure seekers. It combines an attractive countryside and great animal-watching activities. This interesting country prides on several national parks inhabited by rich wildlife, magnificent landscapes of the Namib Desert and the largest canyon of Africa. A trip to Namibia also offer splendid vistas and exciting hiking opportunities. In addition, Namibia’s capital of Windhoek combines European architecture (a legacy of German colonial rule) and the charm of Africa.

Travel Highlights

  • Take a safari to Etosha National Park to lay eyes on the diverse wildlife of this amazing country. There, you will see elephants, zebras, lions and other animals that gather around waterholes in great numbers.
  • Visit the Namib Desert to experience ever-shifting sand dunes. Don’t miss Dead Vlei, a photogenic area with black trees surrounded by high dunes.
  • To get acquainted with elephants, lions and black rhinos adapted to the desert conditions, head to Damaraland. Also, visit the Damara Living Museum to learn about the region’s traditional culture.
  • Stop by the coastal area of Walvis Bay in November to observe migrations of whales.
  • Discover some of the finest examples of African prehistoric art on the guided tour through Namibia’s highest mountain of Brandberg.
  • In the south, visit the Fish River Canyon. The southern hemisphere’s largest canyon abounds with impressive cliffs. Zebras, klipspringer antelopes and black eagles inhabit the area.

Travel Tips

  • Since public transport is inconsistent, rent a car to explore Namibian countryside efficiently.
  • Banks in Namibia offer more favorable money exchange rates than exchange offices. Besides Namibia Dollar, you can use South African Rand. ATMs are available in major banks and their subsidiaries.
  • Internet access is scarce and expensive (around 4 USD per hour). You should find internet cafes in tourist-oriented towns.
  • Take basic precautions in towns to avoid scams.
  • If you travel to northern regions of the country or in summer, take a preventive anti-malaria therapy.
  • English is the official language in Namibia. German is also widely in use.
  • Same sex display of affection is illegal in Namibia.

Namibia has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Namibia before planning your tour. If you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Namibia, do check out our Namibia Travel Guide for more information.

Day 1: Windhoek – Mount Etjo and Okonjati Nature Reserve, Namibia

At 07:15, you will be collected from your accommodation within Windhoek’s city limits for a short pre-departure meeting.

In Okahandja, Namibia’s largest wood carving market, we will make our first stop before heading north. All over Namibia, craftsmen display a variety of items, small and large. Namibian souvenirs can be collected here, and local artists and communities get to benefit at the same time.

Mount Etjo campsite, adjacent to Okonjati Game Reserve, will become our overnight destination. We will make camp and prepare lunch before driving the three kilometers to the lodge for a swim and a stroll through the grounds.

There are terracotta buildings and lawns surrounded by palm trees that give the lodge a Moroccan flair. After a good rain, many large and small pools and lakes are formed around the lodge and throughout Okonjati reserve. A small population of hippopotamus lives around the main lodge area’s lake. In this semi-desert region of Namibia, hippos do not naturally occur, so they are provided with an artificial habitat at the lodge. Although it may not allow us to see and photograph this iconic African species without having to travel many kilometres to Namibia’s far north, it may provide us with a chance to view and photograph this species.

After meeting our local guide and climbing into open game viewing vehicles, we embark on our three-hour excursion into the reserve. In addition to its large size, the reserve also has an abundance of magnificent scenery and wildlife. Vachellia (formally Acacia) trees dominate the terrain, which is also rich in thorn scrub and standing mopani trees. There are several massive copper-red and grey termite mounds scattered throughout the area. Because pachyderms and other shrub-browsing species have healthy appetites, Okonjati reserve is largely free of invasive vegetation. As a result, there are large expanses of semi-open grassland savanna that are intersected by many dry streams and riverbeds. This open landscape makes viewing game and taking pictures a pleasure for us and for the game.

Elephants and rhinos are our main targets, but we are also keeping an eye out for giraffes and other, smaller animals. A sharp eye can spot springboks, wildebeests, impalas and kudus as well as warthogs, steenboks and damara dick-dicks. The bush is abundant with game and birdlife, especially around the seasonal waterholes.

The scenery remains as dominant as the wildlife. The vast African Big Sky takes center stage under the pristine bush, which is framed by towering red and gray sandstone cliffs. I can’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon. Then we will return to the lodge for some refreshments and head back to the campsite for dinner, which will be prepared over an open fire by our guide around sunset.

In the evening, we watch some of the resident lions eat dinner at the lodge. A large secure enclosure is where these Big Cats live and hunt naturally at Mt. Etjo, where they are permanent residents. Observing and photographing the majestic cats as they arrive for a snack from a secure hide that offers a close-up view is a wonderful experience.

Following a jam-packed day, we return to our camp to finally settle down for the night under canvas after a long day.

Day 2: Mount Etjo – Okaukuejo – Etosha National Park, Namibia

On our way to Etosha National Park, we depart after breakfast, returning to the main road. Before reaching Etosha’s main camp at Okaukuejo, we stop in the small town of Otjwarongo for essential supplies.

From the moment we enter the park, we are treated to a short game drive between the Anderson Gate and Okaukuejo Camp where we have a good chance of spotting big game. There are 114 species of mammals in Etosha, 350 species of birds, 110 species of reptiles, uncountable amounts of insects, and one species of fish, which is somewhat bizarre. Etosha is a huge reserve that is just over 22,000 square kilometers.

Our goal will be to hunt big game in Etosha after setting up our campsite. These areas are frequently home to elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and big cats. Additionally, we try to spot small animals, like antelopes and gazelles, as well as zebras, and birds.

As soon as the sun sets, all visitors must be back at camp, but the ‘game show’ continues. From our campsite, we can walk to Okaukuejo where we see Etosha’s treasures at its floodlit waterhole, easily accessible by foot. This is our best chance of getting up close to a black rhino since we will see big cats, elephants, and a wide range of smaller game. At Okaukuejo, these critically endangered animals are regular visitors. Namibia is their last stronghold.

Day 3: Okaukuejo – Halali – Okaukuejo – Etosha National Park, Namibia

Our entire day is at our disposal to explore Etosha. Upon entering the park at sunrise, we’ll have a drink and snack before we head out as the sun breaks the horizon. Game viewing is usually at its most productive in the morning, and big cats returning from hunting are often seen first thing in the morning.

As Etosha is a desert landscape, natural resources are limited. As much as we can, we take advantage of natural and artificial waterholes while driving. Hopefully, we will be able to gain access to the game by attracting the animals for an early morning drink. During our game drive, we will stop en-route to Halali for a quick breakfast at a designated picnic area. European sport hunting with horses and hounds originally used a bugle refrain called Halali. As soon as the hunt was over, the bugler sounded the Halali. In Etosha, hunting is prohibited forever because it is protected by a park.

Lunch will be served at Halali. You can also take a swim in the pool or shop for souvenirs in the small shop. After lunch, we will take a game drive through the park before stopping at Halali camp waterhole. Our next stop will be the Etosha Pan on our way back to Okaukuejo. A pan of this magnitude is referred to as Etosha, which translates as ‘great white space’. This dazzling white mineral pan is over 4,700 square kilometers in size, and it can be seen from space.

While winding our way back to Okaukuejo, we keep a sharp eye out for game and aim to be back at camp before sunset so we can enjoy the best part of the day at the waterhole at Okaukuejo.

Accommodation : Okaukuejo Campsite – Twin share tents and shared ablutions Meals : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Okaukuejo – Palmwag, Namibia

Leaving Etosha, it’s time to discover Namibia’s other highlights. After breakfast, we will game drive out of the park and back to the main road.

At the start of the day we visit the Otjikandero Himba Village near Kamanjab, a fascinating cultural experience. Traditionally, the Himba people live in an extremely remote area of Namibia in the far north.

Due to their isolation, the modern world was not able to reach their communities as quickly as it did other ancient cultures, which enabled them to continue living their traditional lifestyles for a much longer period of time. Many Himba tribes people have migrated further south with tourism and natural flow of change, but traditions survive hard and many of these tribes are continuing to live their traditions to this day. As a living village, Otjikandero Himba Village has permanent residents and largely adheres to its traditional culture. Despite the fact that the 21st century has arrived here as well, it is still an accurate representation of the traditional way of life of the Himba people. In the village, we’ll be invited in, given a guided tour, encouraged to take pictures, and asked questions so as not to intrude on privacy.

Before continuing on with our journey, we will stop in Kamanjab after our visit to Otjikandero. As we continue on our journey today, the Etendeka Mountains and the Grootberg Pass are the next stops on our itinerary. In fact, many of the surrounding mountains have flat tabletops, hence the name Etendeka. Around 180 million years ago, what is now Southern Africa broke off from what is now South America, leaving small uniform boulders on the terrain. Brazil is known for its abundance of Etendeka basalts, which were formed during a period of massive volcanic upheaval. The sweeping views of this ancient land can be enjoyed as we travel through this rocky landscape.

In the palmwag area, elephants often find refuge under waving makalani palm trees, which are commonly located along the Uniab River. The elephants have been known to drink water from the swimming pools when they come very close to our camp, or even when they come right in for a visit. The camp is set up in time to enjoy a sundowner and maybe even see some of the resident elephant herds after we arrive in the late afternoon.

Accommodation : Campsite – Twin share tents and shared ablutions Meals : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Distance : 320 kms

Day 5: Palmwag – Cape Cross, Namibia

Having reached the end of our northern adventure, today we head west to the Atlantic Ocean before heading south along the coastline to Cape Cross.

Our journey took us through more beautiful scenery and passed many weird and wonderful plants that are famous in this area. Welwitschia Mirabilis, Namibia’s endemic national plant, is going to be the focus of our attention. Only Namibia and southern Angola are home to this species of dwarf tree. There are very few plants as drought-tolerant and old as the Welwitschia. An estimated 1,500 years have passed since some of these specimens were found.

Our journey begins at the northern Springbokwasser Gate, where the chilly Atlantic Ocean awaits us. With its forbidding mountains and barren beaches, it is easy to understand why this barren coastline is called the Skeleton Coast. All three conspire to push ships onto the beach due to the wind, waves, and fog banks. There was no fresh water, no food, no rescue, and a slow death by exposure for the countless mariners who were shipwrecked here in olden times. The lucky ones were the ones who went down with the ship.

Our road still bears some evidence of human activity. The Skeleton Coast, in the early 1960s, was the site of a potential discovery of oil and diamonds, bringing fame and fortune to two pioneering entrepreneurs, Jack Scott and Ben du Preez. They had to set up a massive drilling rig that conducted a 1,700-meter bore before they realized there was no oil in the field. Their abandoned oil rig was already rusting away, but they did not let the reports of massive diamonds at Cape Cross deter them from building a diamond mine and processing plant close to where their abandoned oil rig stood. However, the diamond processor had been ‘seeded’ with diamonds from elsewhere, which led to suspicion that some diamonds had been found. This is a ploy to keep investors satisfied for as long as possible. Toscanini’s oil drilling machine is now collapsed, and we are able to have a look at it as we pass by.

Our journey continues onto one of the world’s largest seal colonies after a crossing of the Ugab River with its iconic gates.

Thousands of seals bask on the rocks or swim just off the beach at Cape Cross, and nobody knows why they chose it as their home. Namibia is the only area where Cape fur seals exist, and Namibia is near endemic to the species. The Namibian Skeleton Coast hosts by far the majority of the world’s Cape fur seal population, and Cape Cross is the largest colony in the world. The smelliest stop on our safari is Cape Cross, an amazing sight.

Near the seal colony, Cape Cross is named after the stone crosses that sit proudly nearby. In 1485, Diego Cao, a Portuguese mariner, ordered the first cross to be erected here. The cross was called a ‘Padrao’ in those days, so the location was called Cape Cross or Cabo do Padrao. Both the German government and the monuments council of South Africa erected replicas of the original cross, which is in a museum in Germany. It is actually the southern cross’ stars that are represented by the concrete discs around the two replica crosses. These first voyages of discovery were made by a tough breed of men who had excellent navigational skills. There is no record of Diego Cao returning to Portugal from this voyage, and his death remains a mystery.

Following a visit to the seal colony, we will drive to Cape Cross for an overnight stay. A walk along the beach at sunset should be possible after we arrive in the late afternoon.

Accommodation : Cape Cross Campsite – Twin share tents and shared ablutions Meals : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Distance : 320 kms

Day 6: Cape Cross – Swakopmund, Skeleton Coast

The rare and wonderful lie-in can be enjoyed this morning as we are in no rush and everyone can come through for breakfast to enjoy a tasty cooked breakfast.

Our plan today is to take a slow drive down the coast towards Swakopmund for an early afternoon arrival. Along the way, we will stop at Zeila Shipwreck which is one of the latest victims of the Skeleton Coast from as recent as 2007.

Upon arrival into Swakopmund, take your time to settle into your lodge and enjoy walking through this German-inspired small coastal town. Here you may even be able to enjoy an afternoon activity, such as quad biking, camel riding a scenic flight or even skydiving if you still have time.

As we are in a town that has such lovely restaurants, dinner tonight is at your own expense as this will allow you to eat some great local meats, amazing seafood and hearty veggie meals where you may go tonight – it’s just a nice change-up

Accommodation: Hotel A La Mer – Twin share rooms and en-suite bathroom Meals : Breakfast

Day 7: Swakopmund to Sesriem, Namib Desert

This morning, we depart Swakopmund at 11h30 so we can have time today to do an optional activity. The adrenaline junkies there’s a lot for you to choose from to fill this morning and for the more relaxed animal-focused individuals, we recommend partaking in a morning trip into the dues to see the more small wildlife that resides within this environment.

Whatever we choose to do is perfect. Thereafter, our wheels start rolling at 11.30 am to drive through the Namib Desert, where we can enjoy the Kuiseb Pass, Tropic of Capricorn, stopping briefly in Solitaire for a sweet treat and a look into the past before arriving at our camp late afternoon.

We set up our tents, enjoy the sunset over the Namib Desert while listening to the barking geckos and know that we recommend an early night as tomorrow morning we set out early, to enjoy “first light” in the heart of the desert.

Accommodation : Sesriem Oshana Campsite – Twin share tents and shared ablution Meals : Breakfast Distance : 350 kms

Day 8: Sossusvlei in Namib Naukluft Park

We’re leaving camp early today so we can see the sunrise over the dunes.

Driving down an ancient riverbed, surrounded by towering dunes, our first stop is the famous Dune 45 , where we can climb to the top to see the sunrise.

On the way down, we stop for breakfast before heading into Sossusvlei . Explore this unique area on foot, head into Dead Vlei with its vast stretches of bleached cracked clay and skeletal camel thorn trees, contrasting with a backdrop of huge sand dunes with their ever-changing colors.

We’ll climb the dune at Sossusvlei before going back to Sesriem for lunch and a swim or rest.

Later in the afternoon we visit Sesriem Canyon before your guide takes you to Elim’s Dune for a short and educational sunset walk back to camp.

Accommodation : Sesriem Oshana Campsite Meals : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Distance : 120 kms

Day 9: Klein Aus Vista, Namib Desert

A very scenic drive is upon us today as we head south through some of the most spectacular desert landscapes in Southern Namibia.

We arrive midafternoon and have a few options to choose from in terms of keeping busy, however one of our favorite things to do here at Klein Aus Vista is to enjoy a nice refreshing swim in the pool at the lodge or go on a afternoon hike on one of the trails from the campsite.

Accommodation : Klein Aus Vista Campsite – Twin share tents and shared ablutions Meals : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Distance : 350 kms

Day 10: Kolmanskop and Luderitz, Namibia

This morning we take a glimpse into the past by enjoying the spectacle that is Kolmanskop.

During the diamond boom in 1910 Kolmanskop became one of the richest towns in Africa boasting the southern hemisphere’s first X-ray machine, a bowling alley and luxury housing. Once this boom came to an end, the towns inhabitants needed to find greener pastures and abandoned this area quite quickly, thus rendering it the beautiful ghost town that is today.

After our tour though Kolmanskop, we continue our adventure to the small town of Lüderitz, situated on the rocky shores of the Atlantic Ocean and well known for its unique and colorful colonial-style buildings, its concerntration camp on Shark Island and Diaz Point, the famous site of the Original Diaz Cross where we enjoy a picnic lunch.

Driving to and from Lüderitz, remember to keep your eyes peeled for the wild horses of the Namib Desert that roam between Lüderitz and Klein Aus. There are many speculations of how these horses came to be but the fact that they have survived in the harshest of conditions is impressive, and any sighting of them is one to celebrate.

Accommodation : Klein Aus Vista Campsite Meals : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 11: Quiver Tree Forest, Namibia

Another early head east towards Fish River Canyon where we have the opportunity to overlook the second largest canyon in the world, which was formed millions of years ago by water erosion and the collapse of the valley due to movements of the earth’s crust.

After lunch, we head to the last destination of our adventure together – The Quiver Tree Forest which is located just northeast of Keetmanshoop . Here we find a forest of over 250 quiver trees which grew spontaneously the oldest trees in this forest are estimated to be around 200-300 years old.

The Quiver tree (Kokerboom in Afrikaans) is also Namibia’s national tree, and the forest was declared a national monument in 1995. The last night on our adventure is spent camping under the stars with meals prepared by our guide. This is an excellent location for photographing the stars should you be an avid photographer (permits are available for night photography of the quiver trees at additional cost).

Meals : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 12: Windhoek Namibia

After a hearty breakfast, we start the day exploring the Quiver Tree Forest and Giants Playground. This area is known to be a geological phenomenon of dolerite rocks that appear to have been stacked by giants.

From here we begin our journey back to Windhoek passing Brukkaros Mountain, travelling through the small towns of Mariental and Rehoboth and then arriving back at the Backpackers in Windhoek late afternoon.

There is a shuttle option for those staying elsewhere within the city limits.

It’s recommended that no flights are scheduled for this day due to the later afternoon arrival in Windhoek, however, if you are desperate to fly out, no flight should be booked before 22.00pm this evening.

Meals : Breakfast, Lunch

Exploring Namibia Tour Summary

Day 1: kalahari desert.

Leaving Windhoek, we travel into the Kalahari Desert. With its deep red dunes and endless grass plains interspersed with acacia and shrubs; it is still home to a surprisingly large amount of specially adapted wildlife. The Kalahari is a vast semi-desert of wind-blown sand. It is the most extensive continuous stretch of sand covering 9 African countries. Unlike other true deserts, the Kalahari does receive erratic rainfall. For many, therefore; “thirstland” is a more fitting description. Lacking permanent surface water, the Kalahari is a challenging place to live. Except for those who have adapted to not only survive. But flourish here. The Bushmen refer to it as the “Soul of the World”. An emotive description for this area!

Enjoy the opportunity to experience the red dunes, wildlife, and plants, in this desert environment. On an optional nature drive. On the Superior Tour, this nature drive is included.

Classic: Intu Afrika Collection Superior: Intu Afrika Collection including a light lunch, Dinner & a Nature Drive in the Kalahari plus also selected beverages

Day 2: Fish River Canyon

We continue south through arid and extensive rocky plains. Visiting the unique Garas quiver tree forest. You are welcomed by quirky human-made sculptures of scrap metal. These set a contrast to this serene, timeless space with Quiver trees and aloes. All nestled amongst huge dolerite boulders, stacked mysteriously. Also aptly referred to as “Giant’s Playground”.

We continue to our lodge, situated in close vicinity to the Fish River Canyon. Here we can explore the area on foot. Or on an optional guided nature drive in the later afternoon. This highlights the Quiver trees, rugged landscape, and impressive sweeping rock formations.

Classic: Canyon Village on a Bed & Breakfast basis Superior: Canyon Lodge including Breakfast, light lunch, Dinner, and selected beverages

Day 3: Lüderitz

Our morning starts on the edge of the Fish River Canyon where we gaze into this magnificent geological phenomenon. The Fish River Canyon is located in the northern part of the Nama Karoo. It is the second-largest canyon on earth. Featuring a gigantic ravine; that measures in total about 160 km long, up to 27 km wide. In places almost 550 meters deep! The Fish River is the longest interior river found in Namibia. But its current flow is just a drop; compared with the immense volume of water that poured down its length in ages past.

We continue our journey past the Naute dam and enjoy a stop at the Naute Kristall Cellar and Distillery. Enjoy an optional tasting of their unique liquors, or simply enjoy a delicious cup of coffee. Proceeding on wards we head towards the coastal town of Lüderitz.

On the way to Lüderitz, we stop at Garub, a viewing point for the Wild Horses of the Namib Desert.

Classic: Obelix Guesthouse on a Bed & Breakfast basis Superior: Lüderitz Nest Hotel including Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and also selected local beverages

Day 4-5: Kolmanskop and Namib Desert

After an early breakfast, our morning starts with a visit to Kolmanskop ghost town. Kolmanskop is a deserted Diamond Mining Town in the Sperrgebiet National Park. Once an opulent and decadent town. A monument to the diamond boom. It was built to last but the diamonds ran out. Today, Kolmanskop stands as a haunting monument to the thriving past. Offering visitor’s unique photo opportunities of a bygone era.

We continue across vast open plains; stopping for an optional light lunch (included in the Superior tour) in the countryside town of Helmeringhausen. Continuing further north along with the Tiras Mountain range to our lodge in the Namib Desert. We are staying close to Sesriem. The gateway to Sossusvlei, Dead Vlei, and Sesriem Canyon. Spend the afternoon relaxing at the sparkling pool, enjoying the vast open desert plains. Or taking part in optional activities offered at the lodge.

The following morning we enter the Namib Naukluft National Park shortly after sunrise. The first rays of sunlight paint the mountains of sand into a variety of apricot, red, and orange. This is contrasted against a crisp blue skyline and provides an opportunity to capture this impressive landscape on film. You will be captivated by the surreal Deadvlei. Surrounded by some of the highest dunes on earth and Sossusvlei.

Afterwards, you are rewarded with an unforgettable desert breakfast amidst the ancient camelthorn trees and endless dunes as a backdrop. Thereafter, we visit the Sesriem Canyon. A natural phenomenon in the heart of the Namib Desert before returning to our lodge. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure.

Classic: The Elegant Desert Lodge on a Bed & Breakfast basis Superior: Sossusvlei Lodge including Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and also selected local beverages

Day 6-7: Swakopmund

After breakfast, we continue our journey approaching the little settlement of Solitaire. On the edge of the Namib Naukluft National Park. You feel like you have arrived in the middle of nowhere! Travel via the desolate, rolling hills of the Kuiseb Valley towards the Atlantic Ocean. We reach the coastal harbor town of Walvis Bay, where we visit the shallow lagoon. This is one of the most important wetland areas on the African continent and a RAMSAR World Heritage Site. Over 80% of Africa’s lesser flamingos breed in this lagoon and present a breathtaking picture when they appear in groups.

Continuing along the scenic route between the dune belt and the Atlantic Ocean we reach Swakopmund. With palm-lined streets and seaside promenades, Swakopmund is a popular holiday destination in Namibia. Its pleasant summer climate and long-stretched beaches attract anglers and surfers from all over Southern Africa. Swakopmund is a bohemian mix of German architecture and African rhythms. A laid-back attitude with adrenaline activities, misty mornings, and desert heat. It is colorful, it is vibrant, but most of all, it is pure fun.

Explore the rugged, sweltering desert on a day tour. Or view this awesome, environment from the air on a scenic flight. Find your inner child and push adrenaline to its limits with extreme adventures. These include skydiving over the desert or quad biking and sandboarding on the dunes. Take time to get the feel of this quaint town. With its historic buildings, museums, and shopping arcades. There is also a fabulous beach bar in Swakopmund.

Classic: Hansa Hotel on a Bed & Breakfast basis Superior: Strand Hotel – Breakfast, lunch, and also selected local beverages

Day 8-9: Damaraland

Today we head back inland past the Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain into Damaraland. This is one of the least populated and most geologically diverse areas in Africa. This harsh, rocky environment is home to the elusive desert elephant, the black rhino, and free-roaming antelope species. We visit the Living Museum of the Damara and the Petrified Forest. Once at the lodge, guests have the remaining afternoon at leisure.

Classic: Damara Mopane Lodge / Ondjamba Adventure Camp on a Bed & Breakfast basis Superior: Twyfelfontein Country Lodge on a Breakfast, lunch, and dinner basis; plus also selected local beverages

Day 10: Etosha National Park

During the cooler hours of the morning we start our day in the company of a local Damara guide, who takes us to Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO heritage site. After a visit to the nearby Living Museum of the Damara, we proceed to the Petrified Forest. A geological phenomenon depicting the creation and metamorphosis of wood into stone. Amongst some of the oldest landmasses in the world. Here we also see the Welwitschia mirabilis plant. This is the oldest living desert plant.

Our onward journey takes us to the Etosha National Park. We check into our lodge located on the border of the Etosha National Park and can unwind after the adventure filled day alongside the pool.

Classic: Eldorado Lodge on a Bed & Breakfast basis Superior: Etosha Oberland on a Breakfast, light lunch, and dinner basis; plus also selected local beverages

Day 11: Etosha National Park

The day is devoted purely to the abundant wildlife found in the Etosha National Park. Which surrounds a parched salt desert known as the Etosha Pan. The park is home to four of the Big Five. These are elephant, lion, leopard, and rhino.

Game viewing in the park is primarily focused around the waterholes. These are ideal places to sit and watch over 114 x different game species. Or for an avid birder; more than 340 bird species.

Popular game species such as giraffe, blue wildebeest, plains and mountain zebra, hyena, lion, leopard, and antelopes. Such as kudu, oryx, and eland. As well as some of the endangered species. Such as the black rhino, cheetah, and black-faced impala. An extensive network of roads links over 30 water holes. Allowing visitors the opportunity of a comprehensive game-viewing safari throughout the park. As each different area will provide various encounters.

Classic: La Rochelle Lodge on a Bed & Breakfast basis Superior: Onguma Collection on a Breakfast, lunch, and dinner basis plus selected local beverages

Day 12: Etosha National Park

Today your guide again takes you on a game drive in the Etosha National Park. We may encounter animal species we have not seen the previous day. Look forward to any new surprises at the different waterholes visited. The Etosha Pan dominates the park. This salt pan desert is lined by numerous watering holes. Roughly 130 km long and as wide as 50 km in places.

During Etosha’s notorious dry spells the pan is a deathly place, lying parched and cracked under the molten African sun. It is claimed that game viewing is best during the dry periods. As animals will then congregate closer to water. But even in the rainy season, the park remains an abundant wildlife haven. This is when you have the pleasure of experiencing the rebirth of life. The young play with their parents and the sprouting of new green shrubs and grasses creates a pleasing green oasis. In the afternoon we travel back to our lodge where we enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure. Enjoy an optional open-vehicle game drive. Your guide will assist you with this booking.

Classic: La Rochelle Lodge on a Bed & Breakfast basis Superior: Onguma Collection – Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and also selected local beverages

Day 13: Return to Windhoek

After breakfast, we travel back to Windhoek. Time permitting, en route, we may stop at the famous wood carvers market in Okahandja. Or the craft market on the main street in Windhoek to pick up the last few souvenirs. The tour ends at your accommodation of choice or at the airport for your outward flight.

Classic: Breakfast Superior: Breakfast, lunch, and also selected local beverages
