It is not mandatory to take bath in the waters of Rameshwaram. It is entirely your choice whether you wish to take religious dips or not. The place is quite significant for Hindu devotees who usually perform rituals and bath at the Ghats in Rameshwaram.

Is Rameswaram safe at night?

Yes, it is safe to explore Rameshwaram at night, however, make sure that you are traveling with a group of fellow companions. Avoid visiting secluded places alone at night. If you are returning from the temple, then make sure that you are traveling with experienced travel planners.

Is there any dress code in Rameshwaram?

While there isn’t any specific dress code for visiting Rameswaram Temple, one should make sure they dress conservatively to respect the local customs and traditions. The local people usually wear traditional dhotis and sarees inside the temple. People from northern India can simply visit the temple in a normal saree, salwar kameez, or other clothes that cover your head, arms, and legs completely.

What is Rameshwaram famous for?

Rameshwaram Temple is renowned for being a part of one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (lingam of light) of Lord Shiva in India. The Best Rameshwaram Itinerary – an offbeat Rameshwaram Trip Plan

Welcome to another detailed destination guide to one of my favorite vacation spots in India.

In this post I bring to you the perfect Rameshwaram itinerary and all the information you need for Rameshwaram trip planning. 

Located in Tamil Nadu , Rameshwaram (also spelled Rameswaram ) is a holy land of Hindus and is speckled with temples signifying different episodes of Ramayana.

But our 3-day Rameshwaram itinerary was more about exploring the natural beauty of the island through offbeat spots. We visited a couple of temples but skipped some crowded tourist spots.

Follow this itinerary for an offbeat trip to discover the idyllic island of Rameshwaram and its nearby places like Dhanushkodi and Mandapam . 

We explored in and around Rameshwaram, the nearby region Mandappam and the fabled town of Dhanushkodi in the first two days. The last day was reserved to drive back to Bangalore after the complimentary breakfast at hotel.

A Quick Outline

Day 1- A Road Trip from Bangalore to Rameshwaram

Firstly, I should begin my story by saying that the road-trip from Bangalore to Rameshwaram is the smoothest drive we have ever been on.

More than 80% of the route is a multi-lane highway, with the best roads in India. We started at 4:30 am and reached Rameshwaram by 1 pm, with a pit-stop for breakfast at A2B at the Salem-Madurai Road.

We crossed the temple city of Madurai on our way. You can stop here to see the iconic Meenakshi temple of Madurai.

However, we were constrained by time and didn’t want to stop anywhere else before we reached Mandapam.

We were a little afraid of the retreating monsoon in the south in November, but the clear sky made our day.

Driving Map for Day 1 in Rameshwaram

Our trip to Rameshwaram begins from Kushi Beach in Mandappam. Here is the driving roadmap from there. 

We also stopped at the Mandappam bird sanctuary on our way but I recommend skipping it in your itinerary.

From Kushi Beach, drive to the Abdul Kalam Memorial, then reach the hotel.

After some rest, drive to the famous Ramanathaswamy Temple . From there drive to Lakshman Teertha and the offbeat beaches of Rameshwaram I’ve mentioned in the detailed itinerary below.

If you want to use the public transport to reach Rameshwaram, refer to the FAQ section at the end of the post.

After reaching Kushi beach you can easily use the local auto-rikshaws and buses to commute.

Unlike big cities like Chennai, communication can be a challenge for foreigners in Rameshwaram. So booking a cab or tour is better. I have listed the best tours later in my post.

Mandapam Bird Sanctuary – a let-down

Mandapam is the gateway to Rameshwaram. It is the last area in mainland India before you cross the Pamban bridge to reach the island.

We took a small diversion to reach the bird sanctuary that we read some raving reviews on popular travel sites. It turns out to be sort of a let-down.

There weren’t too many birds when we went, but we did get some interesting photo subjects here. Aren’t the horses beautiful?

Aryaman Beach at Mandapam

Our next stop was the Aryaman beach, also known as the Kushi beach resort. There is a nominal entry fee of Rs. 20 to this isolated beach.

The approach road to the beach is rugged but you don’t need a 4-wheel drive for it. Kushi beach is one of the most spectacular beaches in India that I’ve been to.

Yes, the beaches of Dhanushkodi were even better, but we haven’t seen them till then. So, it was indeed a pleasant surprise to be greeted by coastal woods around marsh waters that were followed by clean white sand leading to the Prussian blue sea.

Located in the Palk Bay, this 2 km long stretch of shimmering beach is one of the best places to visit in the Rameshwaram trip.

You can go for a boat-ride at around Rs. 150 for 15 minutes. You can bargain for better rates.

There are many watersports activities that you can engage in on the beach. It’s said that the water is so clean that you can actually see the fish underneath. The water was clean indeed, but we didn’t find fish.

It was a refreshing stop after a long drive with little sleep at night. After this, we drive towards the flyover connecting to Pamban Island, a.k.a Rameswaram.

Pamban Bridge

Imagine looking at a train running on a bridge running across the spectacular sea and the bridge opening up to allow the ships to pass through.

That’s the Pamban Bridge, the first sea bridge in India and an engineering marvel in itself.

Constructed over 100 years ago in 1913, Pamban Bridge was also the longest sea bridge in India before the Bandra-Worli Sea link came up in 2009.

I have heard and read so much about it before that there was a great chance for this to be underwhelming. The good news is it was not. Pamban Bridge was love at first sight for me.

I could stand at the flyover all day gazing at the changing colors of the sea on both sides – blue, turquoise, sea-green, orange, red, grey.

There’s a bold warning that the sidewalks of Pamban Flyover are a no-parking zone and that doing so will attract an Rs.600 fine.

A warning that is conveniently ignored by everyone crossing the flyover at least once, despite it being under the traffic police surveillance.

However, at the end of the flyover, there is a marked parking zone where you can safely park your vehicle and spend as much time as you want to.

This is the most amazing photography spot in Rameshwaram.

For first-time visitors who don’t know about the restrictions, the view of the Pamban Bridge from the top is irresistible, and therefore they often tend to park their car or halt for a considerably long time.

Don’t do that. Not just because you can be fined but also because it can be dangerous to do so, especially with kids.

Tips to see the Pamban Bridge:

• Park your car in the parking zone end of the flyover and always stay on the side-walk
• Look out for the train running on the bridge, it’s an amazing experience
• Visit at the time of sunset for a mesmerizing view
• Take a train to Rameshwaram for a unique experience of crossing the sea by train

Abdul Kalam Memorial Museum

Who does not love Dr. Abdul Kalam? India’s favorite president, late Abdul Kalam was born in Rameshwaram.

A simple man with the humblest beginnings went on to become the Rocket-Man of India. After an illustrious career in science, he became India’s 11th President and later dedicated his life to teaching and philanthropy.

Abdul Kalam Memorial was our first stop on the island of Rameshwaram. It was constructed at the burial site of Dr. Abdul Kalam and has some of his humble possessions including his “Veena”.

Veena is a musical instrument that is an integral part of Indian classical music.

The entry to the memorial is free but you are not allowed to bring any camera inside. Phones must be switched off when you are inside the building.

This is a very small museum, but it was a heart-warming experience to learn about the life and exemplary works of the great man again.

Reach Hotel at Rameshwaram

By the time we reached our hotel, it was nearly 2 pm. An important thing to know while planning a trip to Rameshwaram, is that there are only a few hotels that serve non-vegetarian food.

One of them that we found on Zomato was closed all day.

Hyatt Place which is now called Residency Towers Rameshwaram is a 4-star property with a beautiful swimming pool, a modern gymnasium, a spa, and a multi-cuisine Vegetarian restaurant.

So, if you are not too keen on fish and chicken, I’ll recommend Residency Towers Rameshwaram .

Hotel Ashoka and Hotel Ragavendra are the best 3-star properties for accommodation here at a cheaper rate than Hyatt.

Drive to Sri Ramanathawamy Temple

After taking some time to freshen up we decided to go out and explore the island on our own.

I did have an itinerary chalked out which had the famous landmarks of Rameshwaram – the Ramanathaswamy Temple, Lakshman Teertha and the five-faced Hanuman temple to name a few.

Ramanathaswamy temple is one of the four Hindu pilgrimage sites (“chardham”) associated with Ramayana, where people come for salvation.

The Ramanathaswamy temple is unmissable in any sightseeing tour to Rameshwaram. The temple has the longest corridor in India with 1212 ornate pillars and 22 holy springs.

The tall gopuram played hide and seek with us throughout the trip as we explored the other places in Rameshwaram.

Considering the queue before the temple and the parking lot, you will need to keep 2-hours aside for visiting Rameshwaram temple.

Olaikuda Beach Park

Olaikuda is a fishing village in Rameshwaram with a park for entertaining tourists. You can go for Kayaking and different types of boat ride in the lake water here.

We walked on the shore observing the fishermen and the tourists kayaking in the blue waters of the lake.

Though they are trying to make it a tourist attraction, the place is still off-the-radar as you can’t find it on TripAdvisor.

Rameshwaram Lighthouse

We continued to drive aimlessly towards the land’s end as seen on Google Map, and that’s how we reached the lighthouse beach of Rameshwaram.

This is another fishing village, but there were no tourists here. I loved how the small park near the beach had tree-houses and a well.

The lighthouse was closed when we went but we loved spending time on the desolate beach with no other tourists around.

Lakshman Teertha

Near the Ramanathaswamy temple is the Lakshman Teertha. This is a beach where pilgrims take a bath before visiting the Ramanathaswamy temple.

It is also a great place to view the sunset. However, the beach is quite dirty and stinky, unlike all other beaches of Rameshwaram.

I liked the spiritual energy out there, but this is not where I would spend much time.

Sunset at Vivekananda Memorial & Beach

We drove through the interiors of Rameshwaram while chasing the sunset to another offbeat place in the area.

The Vivekananda Memorial is a beautiful building that stands out for its bright saffron color and a colorful dome.

By the time we reached there, we had already missed the sunset, but we experienced the ethereal dusk at the beach behind.

The Vivekananda memorial itself is small and has only a few photographs and books of Swami Vivekananda, one of the greatest Hindu saints.

The beach here is spectacular and it was a great way to end our really long day.

After watching the changing colors of the sky to our greatest content, we returned to our hotel to retire for the day.

Day2 –Dhanushkodi and offbeat Mandapam

A mesmerizing drive to dhanushkodi.

After an amazing breakfast at Hyatt Place, we started off early to Dhanushkodi . Starting early at around 9 am was the best decision of the day.

The road to Dhanushkodi is one of the most scenic roads in India. Swanked by the ocean on both sides the road goes straight to the border of India.

We read about off-roading and the need to hire jeeps for the same, but that is obsolete information now. As the entire road is not just motorable but is the best-in-class.

There is a check post at the border of Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi as well. Vehicles are allowed to cross it only till around 11 am.

Otherwise, you will need to walk almost 2km in the hot sun or depend on passerby for a lift. After that vehicles can only exit from Dhanushkodi.

So, if you don’t have your own vehicle, it is prudent to go as early in the morning as you can and leave by 11 am. Even if you have your own car, reach early so that you can drive to the beach.

Exploring Dhanushkodi- the Ghost town of India

Once upon a time, there was a flourishing town called Dhanushkodi . With the Indian Ocean on one side and Bay of Bengal on the other, it was the only landmass separating India from Sri Lanka.

It was the gateway for international trade and pilgrimage. The fishermen families here lived a simple yet happy life.

Then came the cyclone of 1964. A disastrous one that ravaged the town and rendered it uninhabitable. The government declared it “Ghost Town”.

But few families still decided to stay back. It was their home after all.

53 years after the natural disaster the town started attaining significance once again, this time as a tourist attraction.

These families earn their living by fishing and selling coral artifacts to tourists. Stop at the vibrant beach-side markets to buy incredibly cheap souvenirs and eat fresh seafood at the shacks. 

Words are not enough to describe how I felt when I first stopped at a random beach of Dhanushkodi before reaching the main tourist beach. This was just a place where we stopped our car on our way to the Dhanushkodi beach. You have to keep 3-4 hours aside for a trip to Dhanushkodi, and it will be the highlight of your Rameshwaram itinerary.

Of course, we can’t just talk about a trip to Dhanushkodi and not talk about the famous Ram Setu or Adam’s bridge .

There are satellite pictures of a line of stones underneath the sea that connects Dhanushkodi to Sri Lanka.

According to mythology, this is the bridge that Lord Ram created with the help of Vaanar Sena (an army of monkeys) led by Sri Hanuman to cross the sea and reach Lanka.

That is where the mighty Raavan ruled and had kept Sri Ram’s wife Sita captive. Scientific studies have concluded it to be a natural wonder.

However, the carbon-dating of the rocks put the age at 7000-year-old, coinciding with the date of the events of Ramayana.

Ramar Padham

On our way back from Dhanushkodi we stopped at Ramar Padham, the temple of Ram’s feet situated in a hillock called Gandha Madhana Parvatham.

It is considered to be the highest point in Rameshwaram from where you can get a panoramic view of the island.

If you bring your binoculars you can see the Pamban bridge, the Ramanathaswamy temple and the lighthouse from here.

Speedboat ride at seaside park

After a delicious seafood lunch (finally) at one of the not-so-fancy shacks of Dhanushkodi we came back to our hotel and changed into dry clothes for the second half of the day.

This time we headed straight to Pamban bridge once again, crossed it and reached the seaside park. It’s a small yet beautiful entertainment park that advertises glass-floor boat rides.

The glass-floor boats apparently help you see the fish underneath. A speedboat ride for two costs Rs. 400 (prices as of 2019).

However, when you actually enquire about it, they will tell you straight away that fish sighting is for the rare lucky ones.

They are true. The glass-floor is too soiled for you to be able to see anything underneath.

But that didn’t stop us from enjoying the ride. In fact, this is one of the best things to do on a trip to Rameshwaram.

Chasing the Sundarmudaiyan Fort

After this, we didn’t know where else to go that will be of interest. There are many other places on the tourist map including an aquarium that we could not find.

So instead, we spotted a place for the Sundarmudaiyan Fort and started following the Google maps for it.

On our way, we were surprised to see a peacock in secluded places running around on their own. However, that was the only attraction we found where we went.

We entered a village inside a forest and off-roaded through it, but we couldn’t find the fort anywhere.

Since there was no one around to even ask, we returned and started driving towards the beach.

Erwadi Beach

We didn’t know the name of this beach when we went here, and it was only when I looked back on my Google timeline, I found its name.

Once again, this was another quaint fishing village with no tourists around.

We spent time clicking a solo peacock in the coastal woodlands and waiting for it to flaunt its wings. Well, it didn’t.

This is a beautiful beach to visit if you just want to peacefully relax around in the lap of nature.

Sunset at Pamban

These are the only words that can describe the dramatic sky of the evening at Pamban. Our last stop was once again the Pamban Flyover itself on our way back to our hotel.

As I stood at the sidewalk of a busy highway and stared at the sunset, the cacophony of traffic faded into oblivion.

For those few minutes I had transcended into a different world, I was there at the horizon seeing off the sun while the clouds lingered by.

This was the end of our long weekend at one of the most spectacular parts of India.

The next day we would have to start early for our home to avoid the infamous Bangalore traffic on a Sunday evening.

We would be back in our mundane life revolving around the office and home. But these memories will keep us motivated to work hard and look forward to traveling again.

We had many road trips throughout the year, but Rameshwaram will always find a special place in my heart. I recommend this as one of the best trips in December in India.

How to reach Rameswaram by public transport?

The best way to reach Rameshwaram is by train from Chennai or Madurai to Rameshwaram.

The train will cross the narrow sea through the 100-year-old Pamban bridge – an experience worth visiting India for.

Chennai, located 600 km from Rameshwaram, is the nearest big international airport.

It is followed by Bangalore which is 606 km from Rameshwaram.

However, there is no direct train from Bangalore to Rameshwaram. You have to take a train to Trichy and then get a local train or hire a cab to Rameshwaram.

Direct buses (government-run as well as private) ply from Bangalore to Madurai or Rameshwaram daily.

If you go to Madurai first, then you can take a local train or hire a cab to Rameshwaram.

Which is the best month to visit Rameshwaram ?

The best time to visit Rameshwaram is during the winter, that is, late November to early January . Overall, the weather here is hot, hotter, hottest round-the-year. So, plan your trip in the winter.

August to October is typically rainy season. It is a tricky time to visit Rameshwaram. Sure, the temperatures cool down and you can see a rainbow while across the two seas. But incessant rainfalls can be dangerous in this area.

The rest of the year in Rameshwaram is just hot, hotter and hottest. That’s not a great time to enjoy the beaches and go for outdoor adventures in this place.

How many days are enough for Rameshwaram ?

If you want to follow our itinerary, you need to have three days, considering one-day for returning to your hometown.

Two full days are needed to see all the best places in Rameshwaram , spend some time in the beaches and watch the sunset from the bridge.

However, if you want to club Madurai and Rameshwaram on a single trip, you will need three – four days .

What to eat in Rameswaram?

Owing to its religious significance for Hindus, most restuarants in Rameswaram serve pure vegetarian food.

Idli, Dosa, Uthapam, Sambar, Vada- you will enjoy various Tamilian delicacies here.

However, for great fish you must visit Dhanushkodi. The beach shacks in Dhanushkodi offer fresh fish and crabs.

I visited Rameshwaram twice and loved the vibes of this place. Also Pamban bridge taking to this place is very unique. Taking bath in 108 temple sacred ponds is the most enchanting part of this trip.

One of the twelve Jyotirlinga Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple of Ramanathaswamy is an architectural excellence built in the 17th century. The island of Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu , at the South of India , is one among the foremost pilgrim towns of the country. It is a part of Adi Shankaracharya’s Char Dham or the four sacred sites of Puri , Badrinath , Dwarka and Rameshwaram, and it's believed that a spiritual tour to these places will give moksha or liberation from life.

How to Reach

Rameshwaram has a railway station and good routes for a drive by road. The town does not have an airport, though and you can land at the nearest city airport and then hit the road. The best way to reach Rameshwaram would be by train.

The nearest airport is the Madurai Airport that flies domestic services to cities like Chennai , Mumbai and Bengaluru and international flights to Singapore , Dubai and Colombo . Hire a cab from the airport to Rameshwaram.

There are several daily and weekly trains to Rameshwaram from most major cities of India. Your tour to Rameshwaram begins as the train passes through the 2,058 m 104 year old Pamban Bridge right over the sea.

State and private buses run from most major cities in South India to Rameshwaram. You could also drive to Rameshwaram, which is a favourite bikers’ destination.

There are local buses, auto rickshaws and cabs for getting around town and you could also get a bike on hire.

Rameshwaram has an overall touristy season, but winter season from the month of November to February would be the perfect time to benefit from your trip.

Summer (March-May):

Hot, humid days give in to pleasant evenings, that is Rameshwaram’s summer season for you! The beaches, you would find a cosy number of them here, give respite from the day’s heat. The waters around Rameshwaram are usually not very rough, so some of the beaches allow shallow water wading and swimming. Summer is the second best tourist season.

Monsoon (June-October):

According to legend, Ram was born to Kaushalya and Dasharatha at Ayodhya, the capital of the Kosala Kingdom. Shatrughna, Bharata, and Lakshman were his siblings, and Sita was his wife.

Despite being born into a royal family, his existence was depicted in Hindu texts as being complicated by unforeseen events like an exile into destitute and challenging conditions, ethical issues, and moral questions.

The most prominent of their troubles was when the demon king, Ravana, abducted Sita. Allegorically, the complete life story of Ram, Sita, and their friends explore obligations, rights, and social responsibilities. Through role models, it illustrates Dharma and Dharmic living.

Lakshmana:  In the Hindu epic Ramayana, Lakshmana, the younger brother of Prince Ram and his supporter, is referred to as one who had the indications of fortune.

The Ramayana portrayed Lakshmana as a man who showed his elder brother unshakable loyalty, love, and commitment during both happy and tough times.

Story Based on Epic Ramayana

We all have heard about the Ramayana earlier. The King of Lanka, Ravana, abducted Sita by deceit. That is why Lord Ram attacked Lanka and killed Ravana. Since Ravana was a Brahmin, Ram was accused of killing a Brahmin. To get rid of this allegation, Ram worshipped Lord Shiva.

But there was no temple at all, so Ram sent his trusted lieutenant Hanuman to the Himalayas to bring Shivlinga. Hanuman took a long time to return, so Sita constructed a Shivlinga out of sand. Lord Ram worshipped Shiva with full rituals, which is believed to be the sanctum of the temple.

Later, Hanuman brought a lingam there too. A Shivlinga crafted by Sita, known as Ramalinga, and a Shivlinga delivered by Hanuman, known as Vishwalinga or Kasilinga. Both reside in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, and the Vishwalinga is worshipped first, even now.

Architecture of Ramanathaswamy Temple

One of the Hinduism’s most important sanctuaries, Rameshwaram Dham, is a magnificent example of its grandeur, antiques, and architecture.

The temple was constructed in Dravidian architecture. The corridors inside the temple are expanded between 400 feet and 650 feet in the south and north directions. It contains hundreds of enormous pillars, each of which is ornamented with distinctive bell boots.

Dhanushkodi.

Dhanushkodi, the very last stoppage of India, is also famous as the starting point of Ram Setu (Setu means bridge). This magical land is surrounded by water on three sides which now houses only a small number of people.

Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple

Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple as known as five-faced Hanuman Temple in Rameshwaram is popular in India and it is located at a distance of 2 km from the Ramanathaswamy Temple.

This small temple houses the floating stones of the same kind that were used to build the bridge to Lanka in the Ramayana, which is an appealing feature.

According to legend, when Hanuman entered Patal Lok in search of Ram and Lakshmana during the war between Lord Ram and demon Ravana, he discovered that the five lamps, which were positioned in various directions, represented the life of Ahiravana, Ravana’s brother.

Ahiravana was the king of Patal Lok and Ravana had sought help from him. Only by simultaneously extinguishing each of the five lamps, Ahiravana was capable of being killed.

In order to accomplish this, Lord Hanuman appeared as Panchmukhi Hanuman and put out all the lamps at once. The statues of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita are also on the display at the temple.

Villondi Theertham

Villoondi means ‘buried bow’ and theertham means ‘a sacred waterbody’ in Tamil.

Located 7 km from the main bus terminal, it is best known for its sweet and holy water. It is believed that Lord Ram made this theertham to quench the thirst of Sita by dipping the bow into the sea water, hence the theertham is called as Villondi Theertham.

One of the beaches in Rameshwaram, Villondi Theertham is close to a modest Shiva shrine. The presence of a freshwater spring that is immersed in the ocean makes this place even more unique.

Lakshmana Theertham

The distance between Lakshmana Theertham and the Rameshwaram temple is just 1 km. It is close to Gandhamandhana Parvatham, and Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple.

Lakshmana Theertham is located alongside the temple dedicated to Lord Lakshmana. It was constructed in the Dravidian architectural style. The idols of Lord Ram, Lord Lakshmana, and Goddess Sita were carved into the temple.

The Thaipusam celebration, dedicated to Lord Murugan (Kartikeya), is another appealing aspect of this trip.

Gandhamandhana Parvatham

Kailash Mountain in the Himalayas is to the north, as is Gandhamandhana Mountain. On the Gandhamandhana mountain, a temple has also been constructed, where Hanuman’s idol is placed among those of Shri Ram and other deities.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam National Memorial

A mausoleum was inaugurated in honour of Late Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2017.

Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) created the memorial as a tribute to Kalam and to highlight the rich cultural history and ethnic diversity of India.

The main entrance gateway is similar to Delhi’s India Gate. A bronze statue of Kalam playing the Veena is housed in the main dome, which is reminiscent of one of Rashtrapati Bhavan’s central domes.

What a Nomad Traveller Says about Pamban?

Take a moment to picture yourself riding a train over an aging sea bridge as the corroded and extremely ancient iron pillars of the bridge are being constantly battered by the waves. How will your mind respond?

Will your heart briefly cease beating? To be completely honest, I was rather anxious when I attempted something similar while riding the train across the perilous Pamban Bridge. But at the same time, I also had excitement!

Besides being risky, the train ride across the Pamban Bridge is also spectacular. No doubt, this bridge is an architectural wonder.

I am going to describe the glimpses of my mind of this exhilarating railway ride which I had from Madurai to Rameshwaram.

I was travelling from Madurai to Rameshwaram, so I hopped on a train from Madurai. Until I caught a few glimpses of the water just before arriving in Pamban, the three-and-a-half-hour trip was quite dull and routine.

To get the finest view of the train crossing the water, I hurried to the doors. Although doing so is prohibited, but there are occasions when it becomes hard to control oneself in the face of something really compelling.

Then suddenly train speed has been reduced drastically and all the passengers understood why the train’s speed had been significantly reduced. Then, I found myself above the water. Both sides were incredibly beautiful. I received a much relaxation from the sight of the azure ocean. The infinite water could be seen in all directions of the train.

The sight of the waves crashing against the bridge’s arches thrilled me. The corrosion on the pillars and the fences of the bridge frightened me even more.

Even though the train was traveling slowly, it was becoming more and more challenging to stand upright. While flying over the ocean, I captured some breathtaking scenery on my camera. Undoubtedly, it was a really overwhelming experience! The Pamban train was thrilling.

The other famous feature of the Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple is its famous temple corridor which is said to be the longest of its kind in any Hindu temple in India. The outer corridor of the Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram has 1212 pillars and is a stunning example of the aesthetics of Indian temple architecture.

Agni Theertham

Sangumal Beach

The Sangumal Beach is easily accessible from Agni Theertham. Inside the sanctum sanctorum, there is a smaller idol of Hanuman, Ram and Sita. These idols were brought here from Dhanushkodi. Rameshwaram to Dhanushkodi distance is about 19 kilometres.

An important attraction of the Sri Panchmukhi Hanuman temple is the floating stones that can be seen here. Though the stones are heavy, they can be seen floating in the water. It is believed that these are the stones that were used by Lord Ram and his Vanar Sena to build a bridge (Ram Setu) to Lanka, as described in the Ramayana.

Pamban Bridge

If you look at the map of Rameshwaram, you will realize that Rameswaram is actually an island, surrounded by the waters of the Indian Ocean on all sides. The Pamban Bridge is what connects the island of Rameshwaram to the mainland of India . There is a Railway bridge and a road bridge that run parallel to each other.

The name Pamban Bridge actually refers to the Railway Bridge , however, both are collectively referred to as Pamban Bridge. The official name of the road bridge is Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge .

The bridge spans from Mandapam to Pamban , which is the starting point of Rameshwaram. The sight of a train cruising on the 2.2-kilometre-long bridge in the middle of the waters of the Indian ocean is spectacular. The bridge has been featured in many movies including Chennai Express.

The Pamban Bridge offers spectacular views of the Rameshwaram island, and it is a surreal sight to watch the arrival of a train from the road bridge. If you are near the Pamban bridge around sunset, you are treated to a magical sunset.

Rameshwaram Lighthouse | Pamban Lighthouse

If you love the romantic aura that envelops lighthouses, you are sure to like the Pamban Lighthouse. It is one of the two lighthouses in Rameshwaram . The original lighthouse dates back to the year 1845. It is located towards the east of the Pamban Bridge.

Vivekananda Memorial House Kundhukal

The Vivekananda Memorial set amidst serene surroundings is a beautiful and fitting tribute to the great mystic and monk, Swami Vivekananda. It is a beautiful and aesthetic structure that stands right opposite the Kundhukal Beach , about 8 kilometres from the Pamban Bridge. The memorial brings alive the stirring life and times of Swami Vivekananda through photographs and images of the monk.

He then decides to build a bridge to Lanka. Ramar Paatham , which literally means, “ Feet of Rama ,” is a temple built on a hillock. It is believed the hillock was a mountain in the times of the Ramayana.

Today the hillock happens to be the highest point in Rameshwaram and offers a panoramic view. The temple has the footsteps of Shri Rama engraved inside a Chakra in rock .

Lakshman Teertha

The Lakshman Theertha is a pond located not far from the main Rameswaram Temple. According to legend, Lord Ram’s brother Lakshman had installed and worshipped a Shivling here. During the festival known as Thai Poosam, a floating car procession is organized in the Lakshman Theertha.

Jada Theertham

The Jada Theertham is a holy pond that is located about 13 kilometres from Rameswaram. It can be visited on the way to Dhanushkodi. There is a small Shiva temple in front of the Jada Theertha. According to legend, Ram and Lakshman washed their Jada/Jata (hair), in this pond before they proceeded to Rameswaram, after killing Ravana in Lanka.

Dhanushkodi

Dhanushkodi , which was once a thriving village on the edge of the southern coast of India is today a ghost town . Ruins of a church, railway station , and other structures can be seen standing forlorn in the sand. Dhanushkodi was completely destroyed during a storm in the year 1964.

The Dhanuskodi Beach makes for a pleasant stroll as a strong wind blows across the Indian ocean. The beach is not very safe for swimming as the currents can be strong.

Rama’s Bridge | Adam’s bridge | Ramar Sethu Palam | Rama Setu

Rama’s Bridge is a land path that is seen beneath the waters of the ocean. It is near the Palk Straits and leads from Rameswaram to current day Sri Lanka. Many believe that this narrow landmass that has been revealed by satellite imagery is the remains of the bridge, which is the bridge that was built by Lord Rama with his Vanara army.

The Rama’s Bridge is also termed as Adam’s Bridge and connects Pamban island in India and Mannar Island in Shri Lanka, along the Palk Strait.

Nambu Nayaki Amman Temple

Nambu Nayaki Amman Temple is known to be the goddess who protects  the South. It is a sacred place for people to pray and make wishes, for them and their families well being. A storm hit in 1964 which shifted the Nambu nayaki amman sanctuary in Dhanushkodi. Since the entire Dhanushkodi city sank into the ocean, it was declared by Indian government as a phantom town. Nambu Nayaki's ambal statue was removed from the ruined town and was  kept safe within the temple, in the same position it is presented today. The tirtham is also famous for having an orchid of Screw pine tree or umbrella tree which is well known for its ayurvedic properties. Location: Near “Pudhu Road” village, Tamil Nadu. Located in the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu, Rameshwaram is one of the four important pilgrimage centres know as Char Dham and attracts thousands of visitors in a year. Pamban channel separates it from the mainland, and the waters surrounding it make it extremely attractive to visitors who are not particularly interested in its connection to the days of the Ramayana.

The beaches here are clean and the landscape offers a great subject or backdrop for any picture you may want to take. Let’s talk about the beautiful places to visit in Rameshwaram, including some temples and ponds.

Places To Visit In Rameshwaram

1. ramanathaswamy temple.

The Largest Hallway in India at the Ramanathaswamy Temple

This temple dedicated to Lord Shiva houses one of the 12 Jyotirlingas located in different parts of India. Said to have originally been built by Rama himself, the temple contains a very famous 197-metre-long hallway flanked by beautiful and ornately carved pillars.  

With a 54-metre tall gopuram, the temple is considered a prime example of Dravidian architecture. The temple’s construction was started in the 12 th century and the different parts are credited to many different rulers.

2. Jada Tirtham

This is a sacred pond where Rama is supposed to have washed his matted hair or jada, after killing Ravana and before worshipping Lord Shiva.

Located on the way to Dhanushkodi, this pond is held highly sacred by Hindu pilgrims who come in huge numbers to visit the pond and to worship at the only temple to Lord Shiva at Kapardiswara, which is located here.

3. Dhanushkodi

Dhanushkodi meaning ‘end of the bow’ is a small town located at the south-east end of Pamban island in Tamil Nadu. The temple here is described in the Ramayana but currently has nothing but ruins which have been left behind due to the ravages of the sea and time.

The town itself lies abandoned and uninhabited since the 1964 cyclone which destroyed the town and took many lives.

4. Pamban Bridge

This sea bridge was opened in 1914, connecting the town of Rameshwaram on Pamban island to Mandapam on the mainland. This 100 years old bridge contains 143 pillars, each of which is 220 feet in length and 100 tonnes in weight.

The bridge is conventional for the most part but has a double-leaf bascule section which can be raised to let ships and barges pass through. The bridge spans a distance of 2.345 km and took 14 years to be completed.

5. Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge

The Annai Indira Gandhi Road bridge was built right next to the Pamban Bridge, connecting Rameshwaram to NH 49 on the mainland. This bi-lane bridge allows you to glimpse the trains crossing the railway bridge as you drive over the bridge.

6. Gandhamadhana Parvatham

This is the name of a mountain, which legend has it was ferried on his back by Hanuman to bring the life-saving Sanjeevani herb for Rama’s brother Lakshman, who swooned in battle.

The place is very quaint, offering a beautiful view of the whole island from its peak. There is also a two-storeyed temple to Rama, which has the imprint of his feet on a chakra.

7. Panchamukhi Hanuman Temple

The idol of Lord Hanuman or Anjaneya here has four other heads, of Lords Narasimha, Adivaraha, Garuda and Hayagriva. The statue is smeared with Sindoor and worshipped by Hindus with complete devotion along with the idols of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita who also have shrines here.

The ‘floating stones’ on display here are considered to prove the legend of the Rama Setu across the sea to Lanka.

8. Adam’s Bridge

Adam’s Bridge or Rama Setu is the legendary bridge described in Ramayana as having been built by the Vanara Sena of Rama, to cross over from the Indian subcontinent to Sri Lanka. These are a chain of limestone shoals which connect Dhanushkodi at the tip of India’s Pamban Island to Sri Lanka.

9. Nambu Nayaki Amman Temple

Situated 8 kms away from the Ramanathaswamy temple, the temple to Nambu Nayaki Amman is a highly popular goddess, worshipped in this region.

The goddess is believed to offer good health and progeny to the worshippers. Anyone facing problems in the region trust the goddess to help them come out of their problems.

10. Water Bird Sanctuary

Between October and January, one gets to see a lot of migratory birds along with the local birds which make this one of the most interesting spots in Rameshwaram, which have no connection with any religion. The sanctuary attracts a lot of visitors.

11. Ariyaman Beach

The beach at Ariyaman stretches a length of 2 kilometres and a width of 150 metres. Adventurous souls can indulge in some water sports like parasailing, water scooter rides and windsurfing.

The beach also offers a children’s park, an aquarium and a museum as well. The casuarina groves offer a wonderful beachside venue for picnickers to the place.

12. Kothandaramaswamy Temple

Located very close to the sea, this temple to Kothandaramaswamy is approximately 500 years old. This temple has the idols of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana along with that of Vibhishana, the brother of Ravana who sided with Rama during the war.

Many believe that Rama crowned Vibhishana in this place. The temple’s walls have paintings which tell us this story.

13. Lakshmana Tirtham

Between a temple dedicated to Lakshmana and a Ramanathswamy Temple, is a sacred pond. The Lakshmana Temple is engraved with images from the mythological story of Ramayana.

The Ramayana is a part of the ancient literature of India, and it is a joy to see these stories set in stone for those who are familiar with them.  It is custom for visitors of the temple to take a dip in the pond that sits near this temple, but it is not mandatory.

14. Villoondi Tirtham

The sacred stories of the Ramayana, generally considered mythological, have many physical locations and remnants spread across the Indian subcontinent, and this is one more.

The Villoondi Tirtham, which translates to “the buried bow,” is part of the Ramayana. Rama was said to have shot an arrow into the river to form a shower of water for Sita, his wife, to drink. There is a temple there, called the Ekantha Ramar, also part of the Ramayana.

15. Jatayu Tirtham Temple

5. Gandamadana Parvatham

This sacred hillock offers a stunning 360-degree view of Rameshwaram and houses a shrine with Lord Rama’s footprints. A must-visit for both religious and nature enthusiasts.

6. Five-faced Hanuman Temple

This unique temple, dedicated to Lord Hanuman, features a rare idol with five faces depicting various avatars of the deity. The temple also houses stones believed to be from the floating bridge Rama Setu, built by Lord Rama’s army.

7. Jada Theertham

A serene pond surrounded by lush greenery, Jada Theertham holds immense religious significance. It is believed that Lord Rama cleansed himself here after killing Ravana. A dip in this holy pond is said to wash away sins.

8. Kothandaramaswamy Temple

This ancient temple, nestled amidst pristine surroundings, is dedicated to Lord Rama. It is believed to be the location where Vibhishana, Ravana’s brother, surrendered to Lord Rama during the epic battle in Ramayana.

9. Villoondi Theertham

The remnants of the bridge can be seen during low tide and can be visited via a boat ride from Dhanushkodi.

7 places to visit in Rameshwaram for a memorable trip

How often do you hear water sports, ghost towns and mythology in the same line?

Not so often, right?

Well, these are exactly what comes to my mind when I think about Rameshwaram.

A famous temple town located in Tamil Nadu, Rameshwaram is an important pilgrimage centre for the Hindu religion, much like Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and attracts thousands of pilgrims every year.

However, Rameshwaram is anything but a temple town.

From white beaches to turquoise-blue waters to ruined buildings, Rameshwaram is perfect for anyone who leaves beaches and history. This place has got a very laid-back vibe and is ideal for a weekend getaway .

I went on a road trip with my friends from Trivandrum to Rameshwaram. In this article, I share with you some of the best places to visit in Rameshwaram and some history behind them that will make Rameshwaram worth your time.

Water sports at Quest Academy

Rameshwaram, also known as Pamban Island, is located on the south-eastern tip of Tamil Nadu. It is separated from mainland India by the Pamban bridge. Dhanushkodi is another famous town that lies on this island.

At a distance of 174 km, Madurai is the nearest major town to Rameshwaram.

Rameshwaram is close to the border of Sri Lanka and is a distance of 40 km from Mannar Island, which is the north-western tip of Sri Lanka.

7 best places to visit in Rameshwaram

Ramanathaswamy temple.

Popularly known as the Rameshwaram temple, the Ramanathaswamy temple is one of the most sacred temples in the country. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located just 2 km from the Rameshwaram railway station.

The vast complex has four main entrances and 22 wells. Every devotee is supposed to bathe in these 22 wells. This practice is done to atone them for their past sins before entering the sanctum sanctorum.

Even if you are not religious, you should still visit this temple due to its impressive architecture. This place is an architectural marvel with its majestic gopurams, vast corridors flanked by pillars with intricate work and beautifully painted ceilings. This temple has the largest corridor among all the temples in India.

The timings for the temple are from 5:00 am to 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Bags, cameras and phones are not allowed and can be kept in a cloakroom near the temple.

Pamban bridge/Annai Indira Gandhi road bridge

Pamban bridge, also known as the Rameshwaram bridge, is another historical architectural wonder that should be on your list. It was inaugurated in 1914 as India’s first sea bridge and is the second-longest sea bridge in India at present. 

It connects Pamban Island that consists of towns like Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi, to mainland India. Built at a length of more than 2 km, the centre of the railway bridge opens up vertically to allow ships to pass through it.

The history behind this bridge is quite fascinating.

The Pamban bridge used to connect mainland India to Dhanushkodi until 1964. However, on 23rd December 1964, a powerful cyclone swept away the town of Dhanushkodi, overturning the Pamban-Dhanuskodi passenger train and destroying the bridge. 

Henceforth, as the cyclone ravaged the town of Dhanushkodi, the Pamban bridge had to be reconstructed but only till Rameshwaram.

The road bridge that we see today running parallel to this sea bridge was constructed and opened only in 1988.

The best time to visit this bridge would be during sunrise or sunset when you can see the reflection of the sunlight falling on the turquoise blue sea alongside the bridge. If you are coming by your transport, there is no place to park your vehicle on the road bridge. However, you can briefly stop your vehicle on the side and take some pictures (as we did).

Kalam National Memorial

Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was one of the few personalities of India who was revered not only in his motherland but also around the world for his contributions to society. He started his career as a scientist before joining politics to become the 11th President of India.

But what not many people know is the fact that he was a native of Rameshwaram. Born in 1931, he was raised in a Tamil Muslim family with four brothers and one sister. His house (known as ‘House of Kalam’) currently exists as a small museum in Rameshwaram.

After he died in 2015, the Kalam National Memorial was inaugurated in 2017 in Rameshwaram and opened to the public. This memorial pays homage to the life of Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and his achievements and is probably one of the best memorials you will visit in India.

The entire journey in the museum takes you through his life as a child to how he became one of the most eminent personalities of his generation. You will find his personal belongings, replicas, awards, medals and photos in the gallery. The museum records every aspect of his life in great detail, and as a whole, it is well-maintained.

The Kalam National Memorial is easily one of the most underrated places to visit in Rameshwaram; so make sure you take some time out for it. The museum is open from 9-6 pm. You need to remove your footwear and switch off your phones before entering the museum.

The Ghost town of Dhanushkodi

A trip to Rameshwaram is incomplete without exploring Dhanushkodi. Dhanushkodi is a ‘ghost town’ at a distance of 18 km from Rameshwaram, and it takes close to half an hour to travel from Rameshwaram to Dhanushkodi.

It was once a thriving fishing town in Pamban Island located on the south-easternmost tip of India, and it shares the water borders between India and Sri Lanka. It was an important trade centre between both the countries as it used to run ferry services from India to Sri Lanka and vice versa.

However, what you see today are the ruins of a town that got destroyed in a natural calamity.

In December 1964, a powerful cyclone struck Pamban Island and Ceylon (presently Sri Lanka), killing over 1800 people in Dhanushkodi alone. The Pamban bridge (which connected Dhanushkodi to mainland India), Dhanushkodi railway station and the entire town of Dhanushkodi, including a school, hospital, post office, church and a port, got washed away.

Dhanushkodi was declared unfit for habitation by the Government of Madras henceforth and has remained a ghost town ever since, much like Hampi in Karnataka. Apart from a few fishermen and their families who reside here, you will hardly see anyone after sunset.

Today, Dhanushkodi is a popular tourist destination thanks to its unique landscape.

Before 2017, you had to hire a jeep/tempo to visit Dhanushkodi as there was no concrete road. But in 2017, a newly constructed road was built, making it convenient to drive your vehicle to Dhanushkodi.

The drive to Dhanushkodi on this road is a dream for people who like road trips as you see the Indian Ocean on one side and the Bay of Bengal on the other. Vast stretches of white sands neighbouring the road flanked by blue skies greet you on both sides, and you feel as if you are nearing the end of the world!

Once you reach Dhanushkodi, you have transported back in time to a different place altogether. Nature has taken over this town and what remains today are the ruins of a railway station, a church and a post office. Several other ruins are present across the white beaches of Dhanushkodi, but the ones mentioned above stand out the most.

You will find some roadside stalls where you can buy refreshments, but there are no places to stay here. So make sure you reach your Dhanushkodi well before sunset to spend some time here.

Dhanushkodi Point/Dhanushkodi Beach Point

Dhanushkodi means ‘end of the bow’. And the end of Dhanushkodi looks exactly like the shape of a bow.

The distance from Dhanushkodi to Sri Lanka from this point is close to 30 km . Not only that, you see the confluence of the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal from this point. The waters are calm on one side and constantly flowing on the other side.

This point has both mythological and historical importance in terms of the Rama Sethu bridge that connected Dhanushkodi to Sri Lanka.

According to mythology, Lord Rama built this bridge to Sri Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from the demon Ravana.

And according to history, this bridge, also known as Adam’s bridge, was formed naturally by limestone shoals over some time. It is said that this particular bridge was above sea level and walkable till the 15th century.

In any case, the bridge is no longer visible as it is submerged under the sea.

Ariyaman Beach

Ariyaman beach is a white sandy beach that stretches for more than 2 km. It is located on Mandapam, which is 21 km before Rameshwaram. You can stop by this beach while on the way to Rameshwaram or while coming back from Rameshwaram.

As this place is less touristy, you can have a peaceful time here and even go swimming as the depth of the water is shallow and the tides are generally low. The beach is clean, and the water is crystal clear.

A forest cover provides ample shade and also a place for parking your vehicle. The best time to visit this beach is in the morning or evening as it generally gets hot otherwise.

Beware of the jellyfishes that can be seen sometimes on the shores!

Another lesser-known fact about this part of India is that the southeast coast is one of the best locations in the country to indulge in water sports.

Quest Adventure Sports Academy (QASA), located close to the Ariyaman beach, is an academy that teaches water sports like kayaking, kitesurfing, windsurfing, sailing and scuba diving, to name a few. A few passionate and professional folks from Mumbai provide industry-recognised certifications ranging from a beginner level to an expert level in various water sports.

People from different parts of the country and even foreigners come here to indulge in water sports. You can try out their ‘Discover’ packages if you have no experience but would like to try out a watersport for the first time.

The academy provides various accommodation options and locally sourced food. Their property, known as Kathadi North, is built on a beautiful beach with white sands and covered with palm trees.

How to reach Rameshwaram

Madurai is the nearest airport to Rameshwaram, located at a distance of 70 km. Many flights operate from cities like Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai to Madurai.

To continue with your journey, you can get buses and even trains from Madurai to Rameshwaram.

Travelling by train to Rameshwaram is one of the best ways to experience your journey on the Pamban Bridge. Rameshwaram is a significant railhead connected to major cities like Chennai, Hyderabad and Kochi. There are no direct trains from Bangalore to Rameshwaram, unfortunately. 

If you are coming from within Tamil Nadu, there are buses run by Tamil Nadu Road Transport Corporation (TNSRTC) that regularly ply from different cities of Tamil Nadu like Kanyakumari, Chennai and Madurai to Rameshwaram. There are also overnight buses from Bangalore to Rameshwaram. However, there are no direct buses from Kochi.

How to travel in Rameshwaram

An ideal way to travel around Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi is by driving your vehicle because the roads are excellent and the landscape you see as you go along is beautiful.

If you don’t have any vehicle, you can still hire a taxi and roam around these places. While you are at it, make sure that you take breaks between your journey instead of just getting down to the final destination because you will find many opportunities for photography.

Where to stay in Rameshwaram

Kathadi north.

Kathadi North is the homestay property of Quest Academy.

It is one of the best places to stay at Rameshwaram to enjoy the calm and peaceful vibe of staying on a beach. The stay is inside a remote village away from the hustle and bustle of the city. 

The hosts are amicable and welcoming and will make sure that you have a good time here. Make the most of your stay by indulging in some water sports. 

The accommodation options involve cottages, dorms and tents with complimentary breakfasts. They serve wholesome, healthy and fresh food.

Please note that as the weather is generally hot during the day, it becomes difficult to stay in tents for a long time (as we experienced). Unless you are prepared to face the heat, a better option would be to go for dorms or cottages.

Bhoomi Kumudu

Bhoomi Kumudu is a beautifully built homestay surrounded by pine trees close to the Quest Academy. They have an attached pool and an outdoor shower as well. The beach is a short walk away from this property, and you can swim there as well.

Kushi Beach Resort is located on Ariyaman beach. Despite being a resort, it provides dorms as well at very reasonable rates. You can indulge in seafood at their property. They have their swimming pool as well.

Note: The properties listed above are close to Mandapam, which lies before Rameshwaram. Although you can find many hotels and homestays in Rameshwaram, it is preferable to stay before Rameshwaram to avoid the crowds and enjoy a peaceful ambience.

Best restaurants in Rameshwaram

There are a lot of restaurants in Rameshwaram, especially around Ramanathaswamy temple. Following are a couple of places you can visit:

Sri Murugan Mess

It is a budget-friendly, vegetarian restaurant close to 100 metres from the Ramanathaswamy temple. They provide traditional South Indian cuisine on a banana leaf. The prices are very reasonable considering the quality that you get.

Ahaan Restaurant is a multi-cuisine restaurant close to the railway station. If you want to have North Indian food with some ambience, you should consider Ahaan Restaurant. They are a multicuisine restaurant with a buffet and a la carte options available. 

Travel tips for Rameshwaram

• Wear a hat and hydrate yourself regularly as it becomes hot during the daytime.
• Carry a towel and swimwear if you plan to get drenched.
• If you can’t bear the summer heat, try to cover as many destinations as you can during sunrise or sunset.
• Apart from a few roadside stalls, there are no restaurants or places to stay in Dhanushkodi. Also, you can’t stay in Dhanushkodi beyond sunset.
• Stay in Rameshwaram town only if you want to save some time. Else it’s always better to stay on the outskirts of Rameshwaram for a better ambience and experience.
• The majority of the cuisine in Rameshwaram is South-Indian. Seafood is also an option here.

Is Sri Lanka visible from Rameshwaram?

Although Sri Lanka is close to 30 km away from the tip of Dhanushkodi, you cannot see Sri Lanka from there.

According to geology experts, Rama Setu was a chain of limestone shoals that used to connect Dhanushkodi to Mannar Island in Sri Lanka up until the 15th century. Subsequent storms have however deepened the path and it is no longer visible.

Rameshwaram has always been famous as a destination for religious tourism. But as I figured out, this place has so much to offer in historical and water tourism as well. The fact that it is not very commercialised right now is only a good thing for us.

The only drawback of this place is its location. As it is situated on the south-eastern tip of Tamil Nadu, it is not close to any of the major cities in South India. However, the journey you undertake will be worth it once you experience Rameshwaram.

Ramanathaswamy Temple

Ramanathaswamy another name of Lord Shiva. A must visit pilgrim center in South India where you can find the beautiful architecture of ancient Kingdoms. It has the longest corridor among all Hindu Temples in India. There are 22 wells with medicinal value inside this temple, and this water is sprinkled on the devotees . Taking a dip in the nearby sea is considered auspicious. Best time to visit the temple is early morning. First, take a sea bath and come towards the north side of the temple entrance. You need to take a ticket which cost Rs.25 per person for a dip from 22 wells. The number 22 indicates the 22 arrows in Rama’s quiver. There is a dress changing room at the South gate. Then visit for Dharshana. Devotees throughout the country visit this temple on pilgrimage. The temple provides you a very delightful atmosphere.

R ules: Mobile phones, Camera & other electronic items are Prohibited. Tickets for Mobile is 10 Rs per Mobile.

Opening Hours: 4:30 AM to 1 PM & 3 PM to 8:30 PM.

Entry Fees: No Entry fee for regular or free dharishna. Rs 25 per head for 22 well baths.

Agni Theertham

Agni Theertham located at Bay of Bengal seashore is one of the sacred seas for Holy bath. The pilgrims prefer to take a dip into this sea before entering the temple and all other Theerthams. It is very near to south gopura (Tower) of Rameshwaram temple. You can also have boat riding here. Sunrise view from here is also recommended. There is a belief saying that all your sins can be washed out here by taking a bath in Agni Theertham.

Ramar Theertham

Ramar Theertham is the place where Lord Rama took a bath. The People who have a problem in Horoscope ( Naga dosham in Tamil ) do rituals in the Agni Theertham and then installs Naga Statues – Snake god around somewhere else around this temple to get a peaceful and prosperous life.

Lakshmana Theertham

Lakshmana Theertham just 1 km away from Ramar Theertham . Lakshmanan, a younger brother of Lord Rama, had installed one Siva lingam here. He worshiped the installed Lord Siva for vanishing his sins and then took a dip in the pond nearby, Later that pond got name as Lakshmana Theertham. There is a belief saying that taking a dip in that pond will vanishing our sins too. At the end of January and somewhere else beginning of February ( ” Thai Poosam ” – month name in Tamil ) a floating car festival happens inside the Lakshmana Theertham pond.

Sri Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir & Floating stones

Marvelous and Gigantic Lord Hanuman just 2 km away from Rameshwaram Temple . Lord Rama and his monkey army built a stone bridge to Sri Lanka. You will get a chance to see Tulsidas Ashram there who wrote holy book Ramcharitmanas. Floating stone is the most unusual and incredible one , and two stones are there you can see but can’t believe it is floating on water like paper. Here they explain how the stone floats in water!

Gandhamadhana Parvatham or Rama Patham

This place proved Hindu authenticity. Located near the ocean view. You will get a chance to see a significant footprint of Lord Rama in stone. These are considered a treasured proof of Ramayana ( Holy book of Hindu ). From this place, Lord Rama found Sita in Sri Lanka. You need to claim a few steps to reach this small temple. One can get to see the whole geography of the area. Better to avoid during the noon hours, the floor bakes your feet. I would suggest early morning or evening stroll. If you are lucky, you can also see dozens of eagles doing stunts in the air during high wind times.

Kothandaramar Temple, Dhanushkodi

In last border of India about 500 – 1000 years old with the sea on both side of the road with deities Kothandaraman ( Kothandam – Bow – Arrows), Sita amma ( Wife of Rama), Lakshmana ( Rama’s Brother ) and Vibhishana ( Rama’s friend ). A peaceful, airy place with many paintings inside explaining different events of Ramayana. It is a famous and influential temple for the people with Chithirai star and Thulam Zodiac sunshine. This is a place where Vibhishana – Ravan younger brother surrendered himself to Rama and asked for refuge. Dhanushkodi is the birthplace of Abdul Kalam.

Abdul Kalam House

The house looks very typical not so much decorated, but explain to you faithfulness, commitment, and hard work can take anyone to the top. By seeing his house, you came to know how simple he was. The place houses so many pictures and artwork which documenting Kalam sir life history. The camera is not allowed inside the house. The place itself is well maintained and peaceful.

Opening Hours: 8 AM to 7.30 pm, only on Friday  8 AM to 12.45 PM & 3 PM to 7.30 PM

Villoondi Theertham

The sea water here is salty as the typical sea but from the place where Lord Rama stuck his arrow in the ground contains sweetwater. Rama dipped his bow to quench the thirst of Sita. Main God here is Lord Trimbakeshwar. It is a quiet beach with no waves have a small well by the bank which is drinkable.

Pamban Bridge

Pamban is one of the fishermen towns in Rameshwaram connects the Indian mainland. This is India’s first sea bridge, an Engineering marvel and historical value place a great combination here in this bridge. It is opened on 24th February 1914. Best time to visit is either morning or evening or if the weather is cloudy. It is 2.345 km long it nearly took 14 years for    It is also known as Indira Gandhi Bridge.

Ariyaman Beach

Great resort with white sand, trees background gives you an elegant look. Suitable for swimmers, fun in the evening time local food and fresh fish fry available and other items are always available here. The Ariyaman beach is located about 45 mins drive from Rameswaram.

Adam’s Bridge

This bridge nearly 50 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide which connects India with Sri Lanka, starts from Dhanushkodi ends at Sri Lanka’s Mannar Island. It is also known as Ramar Palam or Rama Setu.

• It is better to avoid your trip to Rameshwaram during festival days. Being a famous pilgrim place there is overcrowd then you might have to spend more and more of your time in queue.
• There is a government-affiliated guesthouse near to the beach with cheap cost for stay – so no need to spend more money on a private hotel.
• Most of the climate here is Tropical climate so you can visit any time in the year; however, the month is from October to April is the best time to visit.

By air: Madurai airport is the nearest airport to Rameshwaram, located about 149 Km from the main city. The airport is well connected with major national and international airports. You can reach Rameshwaram from Madurai by bus, cabs or rented taxis.

By rail: Rameshwaram is connected via rail to the mainland via the rail link. It is well connected to South-Indian cities like Chennai, Madurai and Thiruvananthapuram. It is the most economical way to reach Rameshwaram. 

By road: Rameshwaram is connected via road to major cities of South India via roadways that can be covered by bus or cab. The roads are well maintained between Rameshwaram and Chennai (650 Km), Madurai (169 Km), Tiruchirappalli (271 Km) and Thanjavur (231 Km).

When to visit Rameshwaram?

The summers in Rameshwaram are hot and humid. Subsequently, the monsoon season also faces heavy rainfall in the city. Therefore, the best season for visiting places in Rameshwaram is the winter. The best months to visit Rameshwaram are from November to February.

Rameshwaram temple.

The city’s biggest tourist attraction is the Rameshwaram temple. Most tourists flock to Rameshwaram temple above all other Rameshwaram tourist places. The temple is an intricately carved piece of architecture devoted to Lord Shiva. Devotees from across the world travel to Rameshwaram to offer their prayers to the 12 Jyotirlingas in the temple.

Agnitheertham 

The city is full of “sacred baths” considered holy by devotees. Agnitheertham is the biggest such bath located outside the traditional vicinity of the temple. Tourists visit Agnitheertham to bathe in the holy water as a cultural practice. 

You can visit Agnitheertham between 5 A.M. and 6 P.M. any day of the week. 

Dhanushkodi Temple

What was one of the most well-preserved ancient pieces of architecture and a place of worship for many, the Dhanushkodi temple suffered greatly during a cyclone that hit Rameshwaram in 1964. The temple today stands as only ruins instead of its former glory but is still one of the holiest and most popular Rameshwaram tourist places. 

You can take a rickshaw or hire a taxi to Dhanushkodi from Rameshwaram to cover the 16 km distance by road. 

The timings to reach Dhanushkodi temple are between 6:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M.

Jatayu Tirtham

One of the only temples of its kind, the Jatayu Tirtham temple is devoted to Lord Jatyau, a mythological figure in the epic of Ramayan. According to the legends, Jatayu was killed by the Demon-King Ravana while he tried to stop him from abducting Goddess Sita. The temple is dedicated to his bravery and his devotion to Lord Ram. 

Jatayu Tirtham is 6 km away from the main city, which can be covered via local transport.

Ariyaman Beach 

Another spot you must add to your list of Rameshwaram places to visit is Ariyaman Beach. The gorgeous white sand beach stretches across the shores of the Indian Ocean. You can spend your time at the beach enjoying the various water-sport activities or go boating to enjoy the stunning views of the ocean. 

Located at a distance of 21 km from Ramesharwam city, you can visit the beach between 6:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M. 

You can also enjoy a boat ride for a fee of Rs 60.

Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple

One of the most renowned temples in the city, the Panchmukhi, translated to “ Five-faced”, Hanuman temple is a tourist favourite destination in Rameshwaram. Devotees travel to the temple and offer their prayers to the shrine of Lord Hanuman in his five-faced form. The temple is two km from Sri Ramanathaswamy temple. 

You can visit the temple between 6:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. any day of the week. 

Lakshmana Tirtham

Lakshmana Tirtham is a temple dedicated solely to the worship of Lord Lakshaman, the brother of Lord Ram. devotees consider the temple extremely sacred and it is renowned as a symbol of brotherly love among the two gods. 

You can visit Lakshmana Tirtham between 6:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. any day of the week for free.

Villoondi Tirtham

A place that is both religiously sacred and naturally beautiful, Villoondi Tirtham is a holy body of water in the city of Rameshwaram. It is believed that the spring in the land was made when Lord Rama shot an arrow into the ground to provide drinkable water for the townspeople. 

You can visit Villoondi Tirtham between 6:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. any day of the week free of cost.

Silk Shopping

A famous speciality of Rameshwaram is its silk. In the city’s centre, you can find many shops that sell both stitched garments and unstitched fabrics in unique silk. You can shop for this item in the markets of Rameshwaram.  

Sea World Aquarium 

A world-class aquarium found in Rameshwaram is the Sea World Aquarium. The aquarium is a local recommendation to visit, especially if you are travelling with kids. The aquarium is an experience where you are surrounded by the many types of living aquatic life. 

You can visit Sea World Aquarium between 10:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. any day of the week for free.

Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge

The seven km stretch of a bridge that connects Rameshwaram island to mainland India is the Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge. It is the longest bridge in south India that allows rail and motor transport across the sea. You can reach the bridge by road on local transport at any time as it remains open to entry throughout the day.

Abdul Kalam House

The birthplace of the former President, celebrated scientist and national hero, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, is a place of exploration in the city of Rameshwaram.  Many tourists travel to his old house to account for his humble beginnings and pay their respects in his memory.  

The building is open to visitors between 8:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. on weekdays and remains closed on weekends. 

You will have to pay an entry fee of Rs 5 per head to visit the Kalam house.

Kothandaramaswamy Temple

Surrounded by the Indian Ocean, the Kothandaramaswamy temple is situated on the southernmost tip of Rameshwaram island. The temple is dedicated to the difficult pilgrimage taken by Lord Ram towards the kingdom of the Demon-king Ravana to save his wife, Goddess Sita. 

You can visit Kothandaramaswamy temple between 6:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M.. any day of the week at no entry fee required.

The search for 18 fair and impartial jurors will begin next week in former President Donald Trump's first criminal trial.

Trump faces a 34-count felony indictment alleging that he falsified New York business records in order to conceal damaging information to influence the 2016 presidential election. Monday kicks off jury selection for the trial that is expected to last about six weeks — even as Trump campaigns to be president once again. Trump has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In total, 42 questions will be used to select 12 jurors and six alternates for the first-ever criminal trial featuring a former or sitting president. And this will be Trump's first appearance in a trial since winning enough delegates to receive the GOP nomination.

Still, jurors will not be asked for whom they have voted or will vote, nor will lawyers question them about their political affiliations or campaign contributions. New York Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing the trial, believes those views will be made clear through other questions.

Jurors will be asked to identify the online media, news and social media programs they use, podcasts they listen to and if they have ever considered themselves a supporter or a member of any of six white supremacist and extremist groups — including the QAnon movement, Proud Boys and Antifa.

They will also be asked about their business and political relationships with the former president and New York business mogul. Lawyers will ask if prospective jurors, a relative or a close friend ever worked for any company or organization that is owned or run by Trump or anyone in his family. And they will be asked if they have ever attended a rally or campaign event for Trump, volunteered for his campaign or been a part of any "anti-Trump" efforts.

These have all been questions similarly asked in Trump's previous jury trials in Manhattan.

U.S. Postal Service Recommends New Prices for July 2024

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the U. S. Postal Service filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission of mailing services price changes to take effect July 14, 2024. The new rates include a 5-cent increase in the price of a First-Class Mail Forever stamp from 68 cents to 73 cents.

The proposed adjustments, approved by the governors of the Postal Service, would raise mailing services product prices approximately 7.8 percent. If favorably reviewed by the commission, the price changes would include:

The additional-ounce price for single-piece letters increases from 24 cents to 28 cents. The Postal Service is also seeking price adjustments for Special Services products, including Certified Mail and money order fees. Notably, there will be no price increase for Post Office Box rental fees, and the Postal Service will apply a price reduction of 10 percent for postal insurance when mailing an item.

As changes in the mailing and shipping marketplace continue, these price adjustments are needed to achieve the financial stability sought by the organization’s Delivering for America 10-year plan. USPS prices remain among the most affordable in the world.

The commission will review the changes before they are scheduled to take effect.
