Jungle Cruise at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom: Everything You Need to Know

posted by Charmaine Cortes on January 10, 2023 // last updated on January 13, 2023

There are few rides as iconic to Disney World as the Jungle Cruise.

The riverboat adventure has been delighting guests since Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in Florida first opened up its gates back in the 1970s!

Since then, the ride has only improved– and despite having one of the longest wait times in the Magic Kingdom, guests of the park continue to visit this ride on every trip. That’s thanks both to nostalgia, and the fact that no two rides are ever the same.

Now, with the release of a major motion picture inspired by the ride, new and regular visitors will be flocking to visit!

Before heading out to Magic Kingdom and hopping aboard, here’s everything you need to know.

  • What Is Jungle Cruise?

Where Is Jungle Cruise Located?

Jungle cruise ride experience: what to expect , jungle cruise ride accessibility , jungle cruise ride health and safety advisories , jungle cruise ride age and height restrictions, jungle cruise weather restrictions, jungle cruise faqs, the bottom line on jungle cruise  , what is jungle cruise  .

disney world jungle cruise 2023

Jungle Cruise is one of the original Magic Kingdom attractions, running since its opening in Disney World in 1971.

The real OG Jungle Cruise opened at Disneyland in the 1950s, and versions of the ride exist in all Disney theme parks worldwide.

The ride was originally inspired by a series of 1950s movies, including ‘The African Queen’ and the ‘True Life Adventures series.

Bill Evans was tasked with creating a jungle within the park on a budget. To achieve this, he used a mix of tropical plants and plants that appeared to be tropical (but were actually local) .

He even used the trick of planting orange trees upside down, making the roots look like vines!

Marc David later made significant contributions to the design in later versions, including many of the scenes, present today.

The ride’s early renditions were more of an experience at first, like visiting a zoo or a botanic garden. However, over time the ride has developed into a funny, lighthearted attraction, and as a result, has increased in popularity.

A comedic script was added, the scenes became more humorous, and the guides were encouraged to have fun with the guests. You’ll now find them cracking jokes with guests, showing their personalities, and ad-libbing along the way!

Audio effects have been improved and modernized, the animatronics updated, new scenes added, and the jungle has grown and expanded throughout the years.

In 2010, the jungle became a self-sustaining ecosystem, after 45 years of careful care and growth. The ride has also removed elements that were offensive to native cultures.

The Jungle Cruise story was expanded in 2015 with the opening of the Jungle Cruise-themed restaurant, Jungle Skipper Canteen.

This introduced Dr. Albert Falls as the founder of Jungle Cruise in 1911. He then handed it over to his granddaughter Alberta Falls in the 1930s, where the story of the ride takes place.

The ride is full of audio-animatronic characters– mostly jungle animals– such as ones found on an African safari. There are waterfalls, a temple to pass inside, and many other scenes along the way!

All of the scenes can be experienced from within your boat, making you feel as if you’re an explorer from the thirties.

The ride is suitable for all ages and very accessible to those with disabilities. It’s a smooth, slow ride, but there’s never a dull moment thanks to the story unfolding around you and your skipper’s commentary.

‘Jungle Cruise’ is the latest in a long line of movies inspired by rides at Disney theme parks, the most notable being Pirates of the Caribbean. The 2021 film starred Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt and followed the general theme of the ride.

The Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise is located in Adventureland.

You can find it by going to the hub and taking the first left to Adventureland. After passing shops, restaurants, and the Swiss Family Treehouse, you’ll see the Magic Carpets of Aladdin.

From there, look to your left and you should see the entrance to Jungle Cruise!

disney world jungle cruise 2023

Queue

The queue has four areas that can be opened up, depending on the size of the line. The average wait time for the ride is about an hour, one of the longest at the park.

It can get pretty hot waiting in the queue on a summer’s day, so beware if you have anyone in your party that may struggle with this. Don’t forget your water bottle, sunscreen, and hat!

As you wait in line to enter the line, it’ll feel like you’re in a colonial outpost. You’ll pass artifacts, photos, and tools from the theme and period of the ride to get you in the right headspace.

Your boat will pull up with your guide at the helm when it’s your turn. There are 15 boats in rotation, each with its memorable name (like Wamba Wanda ).

Jungle Cruise FastPass+

FastPass+ was discontinued and replaced with Disney Genie in 2021.

However, due to public outcry, it was announced in 2022 that FastPass would be coming back to the parks. At this point, it doesn’t appear to have been reinstated just yet.

Currently, you can use the Disney Genie service to get you through the queues faster with Lightning Lane entrances. However, Genie+ can no longer be pre-purchased– though you can still purchase through the app when you visit the park.

For more information on Disney Genie, be sure to check out the Disney World website .

The ride has a long wooden bench on each side of the boat, so guests face each other and sit side by side.

The bench doesn’t have a back, so if you lean back you’ll find yourself against the slightly curved side of the boat.

Plexiglass dividers are placed between sections of the bench, allowing four or five people to fit within a section. If you have small children, you may be able to squeeze a couple more in.

Once you step onto the boat, the skipper will welcome you and you’ll set sail down the river.

You’ll encounter giant butterflies, Inspiration Falls, a beach shop called “Boats, Baits, and Bites”, an African rock python, and a Gorilla-raided camp– all before you head down the Nile River.

In this new area, you’ll find African Elephants along with many other animals. You’ll pass a zebra watching a lion eat a member of its pack, and a group of lost safari goers hanging from a long pole, avoiding a black Rhino.

After passing gaters, waterfalls, and a plane crash, the boat is threatened by angry hippos. Thankfully, the skipper will frighten them off. After seeing chimps raid a ship, it’s off to the next area!

There, you’ll find yourself sailing into a temple damaged by an earthquake. Exotic animals like peacocks and a Bengal Tiger await! The ride will end just as you narrowly avoid being sprayed by a group of Indian Elephants.

While the ride is quite cruisy, the fun of Jungle Cruise lies with the skipper. There is a script, but most skippers will bring their own flare to the show– keeping guests laughing and the energy high.

The ride duration is about nine minutes long.

Jungle Skipper Canteen

After experiencing the ride, consider continuing the adventure by stopping at Jungle Skipper Canteen.

Here you can have a meal inspired by African, Latin, or Asian cuisine. Try Skipper Dan’s Dan Dan Noodles, “Hardy Har Char” Siu Pork, or Panna-Connie’s Congo Lime Delight.

There’s an extensive kids’ menu with menu items such as Junior Skip’s Macaroni & Cheese, or Chef Tandaji’s Crispy Chicken.

You’ll also find an extensive allergy-free menu here (as is the case throughout much of the Magic Kingdom), with allergy-free choices on apps, kids’ meals, entrees, and desserts.

Feeling a little parched? Choose from the selection of fun tropical cocktails, as well as their large selection of beer and wine!

Two of the boats, Bomokandi Bertha and Wamba Wanda, have wheelchair-accessible lifts. Most wheelchairs, including motorized and some ECVs, can be accommodated by these boats.

Guests in wheelchairs can choose to board the boat without their chair if able, leaving the chair at the dock. Alternatively, they can wait until one of the accessible boats arrives.

There are days when a sign language interpreter and Disney’s Handheld Devices are available.

These feature Assistive Listening, which will amplify the sound through either headphones or an induction loop. Handheld Captioning is also available on these devices, displaying on-screen text.

Disney’s Handheld Devices are available for a fully-refundable $25 daily deposit at Guest Relations. Devices are on a first-come, first-served basis, and they recommend that you bring your own headphones or an induction loop for use.

All guests should take care as they step down onto the boat from the dock, as it can bob and lean slightly while boarding. The skipper or ride assistant can offer a hand if needed.

disney world jungle cruise 2023

There are periods of darkness, and it’s possible to get damp from the mist near the waterfalls.

There is an instance of gunfire sound effects, but guests can request that it’s not played if this will trouble someone at the party.

Guests must remain seated at all times, including small children. The boat will bob some, and sea sickness is possible, but it is generally a pretty smooth ride.

There is no age or height restriction. Babies and toddlers can ride on their parent’s laps or in strollers.

Children under the age of 7 will need to be accompanied by someone at least 14 years of age.

Jungle Cruise closes during inclement weather, as most of the attraction takes place outdoors.

How long is the Jungle Cruise ride at Magic Kingdom?

The entire ride lasts for just over nine minutes.

How long does the Jungle Cruise line take?

The average wait time is about one hour. It’s a good idea to get to this ride as soon as the gates open to avoid a long queue.

During very hot days, the line can get uncomfortable and is best avoided if you are sensitive to this.

What do you do on the Jungle Cruise?

Guests ride along on a river boat with a skipper at the helm and explore various locations. You’ll see plenty of animals up to no good, and people in plenty of trouble!

The whole experience is fun and comical and suitable for the whole family.

Is Jungle Cruise a good ride at Disney?

This ride is a classic, and it’s only been made better over the years. It’s great for children and toddlers, as there are no age or height restrictions.

It’s a slow and steady ride, so its movement is not frightening. However, some young or sensitive children could be startled in the dark temple with snakes present, or by the gunshot sound effect.

When is the best time to ride Jungle Cruise?

Surprisingly, Jungle Cruise is a great ride at night! You can still see everything, and it looks even more realistic. Some riders report that the skippers tend to have more fun during sundown.

Christmas is another fun time to ride Jungle Cruise– or “ Jingle Cruise” , as it’s called– as it gets a makeover for the season and a snowman attraction is added.

The script even gets a rewrite, so it’s quite a different experience if you’ve already seen the original version!

Who is Jungle Cruise for?

Jungle Cruise is a blast for children but is also enjoyed by the young-at-heart. Some adults may find themselves rolling their eyes at their skipper’s cheesy lines, but it’s all part of the charm.

The Jungle Cruise is a delightful ride for the ages of 1 to 100.

Disney has created a fully immersive experience where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

They have taken careful measures to create a living jungle, keep the ride up-to-date, make it appealing to all– and have even hired slapstick skippers to keep you laughing!

Whether it’s your first or hundredth time on Jungle Cruise, it’s always worth a visit.

There’s no shortage of things to do when visiting the Magic Kingdom, so maybe it’s time to explore Jungle Cruise and all the other rides, entertainment, and food that Disney World offers!

Disney’s Jungle Cruise Closed Indefinitely Following On-Ride Incident

in Disneyland Resort

Accident at Jungle Cruise causes unknown closure.

Disney’s legendary Jungle Cruise attraction is no more, at least for the foreseeable future.

Few rides are as beloved or unique as Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise . Sure, it may not be the most thrilling or exciting attraction at the original Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, but it sure is one of the most entertaining. Jungle Cruise was an opening day attraction in Disneyland, opening alongside Disneyland Park in 1955. The ride has entertained millions of guests since, becoming one of the most classic and iconic rides in all of The Walt Disney Company’s history.

The ride can be found all across the world, with locations like Disneyland Park at the Disneyland Resort, Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, and Hong Kong Disneyland. For those who haven’t been able to experience this incredibly fun ride, guests go aboard a boat as they embark on a journey through mysterious rivers, all of which are guided by a trusty Jungle Skipper. These versions are all fairly similar, though the version of Jungle Cruise found at the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort features some impressive elements like massive flames.

Guests won’t find any flames over at the American Disney parks, but they will find other cool features.

These skippers provide most of the fun, telling jokes, making fun of themselves and guests, and poking fun at the ride itself. While the attraction does feature some incredible theming, as well as some lovely animatronics, the main reason guests want to experience Jungle Cruise is for these skippers. You never know what they may do or so, with each Disney cast member offering their own personality to the mix.

Unfortunately, this ride has been offline and unavailable for multiple days for guests visiting the Disneyland Resort.

Guests checking the Disneyland website or the Disneyland app on their smartphone will notice that Jungle Cruise is currently closed and has been for quite some time. While the cause of this closure has not been confirmed, we expect it has something to do with the incident that happened earlier this week. There are a lot of ways Disney’s Jungle Cruise can go wrong, though most of these are intended. From large flames engulfing jagged rocks to sunken boats and monkeys shooting guns at guests like in the header for this story, the Jungle Cruise is a wild ride, even though it’s incredibly slow. However, what happened earlier this week truly was shocking.

A shocking video was shared online of a Jungle Cruise boat getting stuck in the water. The only way to rescue the guests and cast members aboard was for other employees to pull and guide the boat as it got towed by a boat in front of it. Eventually, the boat was able to dock, and guests were able to safely exit the ride. It’s quite possible this is the cause of the attraction’s unexpected downtime and refurbishment, and we truly hope that it returns very soon.

It’s possible that this boat is not the actual reason the ride is closed, and it’s something entirely different. Several guests have noticed there are now tarps and scrims surrounding the exterior of Jungle Cruise, as you can see in the Reddit post below:

Current Jungle Cruise Status (11/3) by u/Sloth_Dream-King in Disneyland

Surprisingly, this is far from the first time we’ve seen a Disney boat ride get stuck like this. Over the last few years, several viral videos have popped up online, showing the various ways guests can get stuck at Disney, as well as the various ways Disney park employees can help rescue the trapped guests.

We’ve seen brave employees wade into the actual waters of Pirates of the Caribbean and “it’s a small world” to help rescue guests, and we could not be more grateful for the excellent service from these employees.

Typically, when guests are evacuated from a ride or attraction at the Disney theme parks, they are granted a pass they can use to bypass the standby queue for other rides and attractions. This helps make up for the negative experience and lost time.

Have you ever had to evacuate a Disney theme park ride or attraction? Do you enjoy Jungle Cruise?

My party of 2 spent $98 at a Jungle Cruise-themed restaurant in Disney World, and it's the best table-service spot at Magic Kingdom

  • My party of two ate at Skipper Canteen, located in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom.
  • After applying my 10% annual discount, we spent $98 on our lunch.
  • It was a little expensive, but it was worth it for the high-quality food and lively atmosphere.

Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen is located in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom.

disney world jungle cruise 2023

Skipper Canteen is a table-service restaurant serving African-, Latin-, and Asian-inspired cuisine in Magic Kingdom.

It's located in the Adventureland area of the park across from the popular Jungle Cruise attraction , which serves as the inspiration for the restaurant.

The first thing I saw was the restaurant's comfortable outdoor waiting area.

disney world jungle cruise 2023

I appreciated that the restaurant had a covered outdoor waiting area with ceiling fans and a decent amount of seating. Although I didn't get to sit in the chairs, their cushions looked comfortable.

I made my way to the stand and checked in for our reservation.

We were almost immediately escorted inside to a different waiting room.

disney world jungle cruise 2023

I was surprised by how quickly we were brought inside.

Even if I have a reservation at a Disney World restaurant, I usually anticipate waiting between five and 15 minutes for my party to be called.

The indoor waiting area was vibrant, filled with bright colors and themed decor.

disney world jungle cruise 2023

I particularly enjoyed looking at the paintings on the wall. My favorite was the one of a Jungle Cruise skipper driving a boat.

The stained-glass windows in the waiting area were also beautiful and added to the overall aesthetic.

Once we were seated, our server provided us with a thorough overview of the menu.

disney world jungle cruise 2023

I found the restaurant's menu to be fairly extensive, so I was glad our server, Rena, was available to answer any questions I had.

I also liked that many of the dish descriptions were accompanied by images, which helped me decide what I was going to order.

Rena was one of the highlights of our meal. She was kind and attentive and even threw some jokes in — just like the skippers from Jungle Cruise .

Our drinks were accompanied by themed coasters.

disney world jungle cruise 2023

The coasters may have been a tiny detail, but they stood out to me.

We ordered falafel for our first appetizer.

disney world jungle cruise 2023

When I saw falafel ($11) on the appetizer menu, I knew I wanted to order it right away.

The dish came with more than enough falafel for me and my sister as well as a hearty portion of house-made edamame hummus. Pumpkin seeds added some texture to the dish.

This was my first time having falafel at Disney World, and I thought it was very good and worth the price.

Our server told us about a secret-menu appetizer.

disney world jungle cruise 2023

Our server told us that there was a pao de queijo appetizer ($12) on the bonus "Not so Secret Menu," and I wanted to try it for myself.

I'd never tasted anything quite like it before. The dish came with tiny balls of cheesy bread with cream cheese and chimichurri sauces on the side.

The little balls were very tasty. I tried both of the dipping sauces and preferred the cream cheese.

For my entrée, I ordered Skipper Dan's Dan Dan Noodles.

disney world jungle cruise 2023

The noodle dish ($28) typically comes with crispy pork, but I swapped it out for tofu.

As someone who likes spicy food, these noodles hit the mark. Some of my first bites weren't that spicy, but as I made my way down to the chili sauce, I noticed the kick.

The restaurant had three dining rooms, and we were seated in the main Mess Hall.

disney world jungle cruise 2023

The main room had a lot of natural light from the stained-glass windows as well as artificial light from the hanging chandeliers.

There were many photos, wooden sculptures, and decorations around the room's perimeter.

I almost missed a bookcase passageway.

disney world jungle cruise 2023

When I went to explore the rest of the restaurant, I almost missed the bookcase passageway connecting the Mess Hall to the S.E.A. Room. According to Disney Parks Blog , the story behind the "hidden" room is that it's a secret meeting location for the Society of Explorers and Adventurers.

Although the books were props (I tried pulling one off the shelf to see if they were real), it was a nice touch and played to the restaurant's explorer theme.

The S.E.A. Room provided guests with a more intimate dining experience.

disney world jungle cruise 2023

I took some time after I finished eating to check out the S.E.A. Room.

It was more elegant than the main dining room and was filled with a lot of detail. I especially loved the patterned carpet and wooden chairs.

I think I'd request a table in this room next time.

The Jungle Room was nice but my least favorite of the three.

disney world jungle cruise 2023

I thought the lighting fixtures with rainbow glass birds and the fine-china displays were very beautiful. But this room didn't seem as exciting as the others to me.

We paid about $98 to dine at Skipper Canteen, and it's now my favorite table-service restaurant in Magic Kingdom.

disney world jungle cruise 2023

For two adults, the bill came out to $81 after I applied my 10% annual-passholder discount. Once I added in the tip, it was $98.17.

I thought that was fairly pricey , but we ordered two appetizers, which isn't something I normally do at Disney World.

I usually skip the table-service restaurants at Magic Kingdom, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and flavor of the food.

If you want to dine at a beautifully-decorated restaurant with flavorful food and amazing service, Skipper Canteen is an excellent choice if you're willing to spend the money.

Fantasy, Kids, Musical, Romance

"The Little Mermaid" is visionary filmmaker Rob Marshall’s live-action reimagining of Disney’s beloved animated musical classic, the story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy. “The Little Mermaid” is directed by Rob Marshall with a screenplay by David Magee, and is produced by Marc Platt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, John DeLuca and Rob Marshall.

The Rock in Space Mountain? With New Deal, Dwayne Johnson Is a Bonafide Disney Prince

Do Disneyland’s Blue Bayou patrons smell what The Rock is cooking?

Dwayne Johnson and his production banner Seven Bucks Productions have signed a multi-year, first-look film deal with Disney , IndieWire has confirmed. The unique agreement also includes a carveout that opens the door to seeing a lot more of The Rock across Disney’s brands.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Related Stories ‘Moana 2’ Teaser Trailer: Maui Is Back on Board with a ‘Boat Snack Upgrade’ ‘The Smashing Machine’ First Look: Dwayne Johnson Returns to His Wrestling Roots for Benny Safdie’s Biopic

There is also a cross-platform element to this deal that would let Seven Bucks create content across multiple divisions with The Walt Disney Company. Think theme parks and ESPN. Heck, maybe The Rock’s face gets plastered all over Walt Disney World or his Teremana tequila becomes heavily featured on Disney’s cruise ships. Maybe Johnson is the first legit Disney prince. (Apologies to Prince Eric and all of Disney’s other very secondary male characters.)

We’ll see, but if Johnson starring in a “Jungle Cruise” movie wasn’t enough, there is now (more) opportunity for a Space Mountain movie or a Disney+ series based on It’s a Small World. Maybe Johnson will architect a future Moana ride at Disneyland. Hell, maybe he just straight-up replaces Mickey Mouse.

Disney’s ESPN already is a broadcast partner for the UFL, the alternative pro-football league Johnson co-owns with Garcia and Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Capital Partners. Disney is always looking for more content for ESPN+, not to mention a standalone ESPN streamer launching in 2025, so having Johnson produce some UFL content for that seems like a no-brainer as well.

Johnson and Seven Bucks have bounced around both studios and franchises. He went the action-comedy route in a bunch of movies with Kevin Hart and did two “Jumanji” sequels at Sony. He tried his hand at being a superhero in “Black Adam” for DC, and he’s now heading back to the indie space for Benny Safdie and A24’s “The Smashing Machine,” portraying UFC champion Mark Kerr .

Variety first reported the news of the deal.

Attraction starring Disney's first Black princess replaces ride based on film many viewed as racist

Guests pass by Tiana's Bayou Adventure, the reimagined former Splash Mountain ride, at Walt Disney World on May 23, 2024, opening in Bay Lake, Fla.

ORLANDO, Fla. — A new attraction starring the first Black Disney princess is opening at the company’s U.S. theme park resorts, and some Disney followers see it as a fitting replacement to a former ride based on a movie that contained racist tropes.

The new theme park attraction updates Tiana’s storyline from the 2009 animated film “The Princess and the Frog” and is opening this year in the space  previously occupied by Splash Mountain . The water ride had been themed to “Song of the South,” a 1946 Disney movie filled with racist cliches about African Americans and plantation life.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure keeps Splash Mountain’s DNA as a log-flume ride, but it’s infused with music, scenery and animatronic characters inspired by “Princess,” set in 1920s New Orleans. It opens to the public later this month at Walt Disney World in Florida and at Disneyland in California later this year.

“For little Black girls, Tiana has meant a lot. When a little child can see somebody who looks like them, that matters,” said Neal Lester, an English professor at Arizona State University, who has written about Tiana.

Princess Tiana with frog Prince Naveen in a scene from "The Princess and the Frog."

Disney’s announcement that it would transform its longstanding Splash Mountain ride into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure was made in June 2020 following the social justice protests sparked by the murder  of George Floyd in Minneapolis  police custody. At the time, Disney said the change had already been in the works. But it came as companies across the U.S. were reconsidering or renaming  decades-old brands  amid worldwide protests.

The “Song of the South” film is a mix of live action, cartoons and music featuring an older Black man who works at a plantation and tells fables about talking animals to a white city boy. The film has been criticized for its racist stereotypes, hasn’t been released in theaters in decades and isn’t available on the company’s streaming service Disney+.

Disney has been criticized for racist tropes in films made in earlier decades. The crow characters from the 1941 film “Dumbo” and the King Louie character from 1967’s “The Jungle Book” were viewed as African American caricatures. The depiction of Native Americans in the 1953 movie “Peter Pan” and the Siamese cats — often deemed as Asian stereotypes — from the 1955 film “Lady and the Tramp” also have been derided.

Not everyone is sold on the belief that opening a ride based on Tiana’s story solves Disney’s past problematic racial depictions.

By refurbishing Splash Mountain into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure instead of dismantling the attraction completely, Disney has linked “Song of the South” with “The Princess and the Frog.” Both are fantasies that are silent, for the most part, on the racial realities of the segregated eras they depict, said Katie Kapurch, an English professor at Texas State University who has written widely about Disney.

“We might see the impulse to replace rather than dismantle or build anew as a metaphor for structural racism, too,” Kapurch said. “Again, this is unintentional on Disney’s part, but the observation gets to the heart of how Disney reflects America back to itself.”

Splash Mountain in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Imagineers who design the Disney rides are always attempting to look at the attractions with fresh eyes and ways to tell new stories “so that everybody feels included,” said Carmen Smith, a senior vice president for creative development at Walt Disney Imagineering.

“We never want to perpetuate stereotypes or misconceptions,” Smith said Monday. “Our intention is to tell great stories.”

It’s also important for the Imagineers to tell a variety of stories for its global audience, said Charita Carter, an executive creative producer at Walt Disney Imagineering who oversaw the development of the attraction.

“Society does change, and we develop different sensibilities,” Carter said. “We focus our stories differently depending what our society needs.”

The transformation from Splash Mountain to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is one of several recalibrations at the entertainment giant’s theme parks for rides whose storylines are considered antiquated or offensive.

In 2021, Disney announced it would remodel Jungle Cruise, one of the original Disney parks’ rides, which had been been criticized in years past for being racially insensitive because of its depiction of animatronic Indigenous people as savages or headhunters. Three years before that, Disney eliminated a “Bride Auction” scene, deemed offensive since it depicted women lining up for auction, from its “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride.

It’s a positive step for Disney to have a ride based on a character from a background not seen in previous versions of Disney princesses replacing an attraction from a film steeped in racist tropes since “representation matters,” Lester said.

“Disney is first and foremost about money and getting people into the park, and you can make money, still have representation and be aware of social justice history and make everyone feel like they belong there,” Lester said.
