A trip to Daringbadi, also known as the “Kashmir of Odisha” was long due. We had been thinking of visiting this gem of Odisha since long. So when our friend wanted to go for a Daringbadi tour , more precisely a road trip, we just could not say no to it. The journey becomes more beautiful when you have childhood friends for company. Don’t you think so?

Odisha is a fascinating place. Travellers have always associated the state with sea beaches and the ornate temples, but we feel that the state has much more to offer. When we made a trip to the Diamond Triangle in Odisha or visited the small village Raghurajpur , we were totally awed by the Buddhist monastic ruins. This time also, the trip to the Kashmir of Odisha turned out to be a great place with a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure combined together.

Where is Daringbadi?

Located amidst pine forests and coffee plantations, Daringbadi is a charming hill station in Odisha. Situated at an altitude of 3000 feet in Kandhamal district of Odisha, the place has all the attractions that make it an ideal weekend getaway from Kolkata , Bhubaneswar or Vishakapatnam .

We came to know that this hill station was named after one British Officer named Dering. Just like many other hill stations in India like Darjeeling , Panchmarhi , Shimla, this idyllic hill station was quite a favourite place for the British who found it hard to bear the Indian summers. The place was named Deringbadi , which later came to be known as Daringbadi.

Is there snowfall in Daringbadi, Kashmir of Odisha?

Well, I do not know if it ever snowed at Daringbadi long before, but now, it does not get any snowfall. Daringbadi is also called the Kashmir of Odisha, where the temperature dips below zero during the winter.  It is actually the frost and dew on the grasses that get frozen into ice and gives an impression if snow. Nevertheless, with its deep pine forests, green valleys, verdant hills and eye-catching natural beauty, this tribal-dominated area surely justifies the sobriquet it has earned.

Our first stop for the day was the Mdiubanda Waterfall . Surrounded by the dense pine trees, this waterfall is located a few kilometers away from the main town. There is a fleet of stairs going down all the way to the waterfall. The place is quite a beautiful one. The pool was, however, a bit dirty and the water stagnant. The little one, Palash (our friends’ son) was quite excited to see the waterfall and wanted to take a bath there. He was quite upset when his mother forbade him to do so.

Pine forest and Duluri River in Daringbadi Tour

This was one of our favourite places. The pine forest lies on the way to the Mdiubanda Waterfall , so while returning, we stopped at the forests and went inside to explore. The way to the Duluri River is also through the forest.

The riverside was quite scenic. We could not stop Palash this time from having a bath in the river. So he along with his father and uncle went in for some fun in the river, while my friend and I watched them enjoying as we sat down on a rock with our feet in the waters.

What can you do when you see the three having so much fun in the water? You have to simply join them. So both of us did not think much and joined the guys in the river. It was so much fun. The water was cool and it was totally soothing against the sun. Have a look at the pictures below to see how much we were having fun!

After our riverside story, we returned to our hotel, had our lunch and then started for the next few places.

Coffee and spice plantations in Daringbadi Tour

You will definitely see the coffee and spice plantations while on your way to Daringbadi. There is also a garden where you will find the coffee and spice plantations. We saw the pepper plants and roamed around for some time in the cool shade of the gardens.

Emu farm in Daringbadi tour

The Emu farm is around 12 km from the Daringbadi town on the way towards Baliguda. There is a small enclosure where a few emu birds were kept. Although I am against animals kept in captivity, but Palash enjoyed quite a lot at the emu farm. It was totally a new experience for him to see a new bird. The egg of emu also excited him a lot.

Lovers’ Point in Daringbadi tour

Around 1 km from the Emu Farm is the Lovers’ Point. I don’t think many lovers visit there in the afternoon. At least we were the only ones there when we visited. The road to the Lovers’ Point is also a bit rough. But the place is extremely beautiful. The river is flowing by and you can simply sit on the huge rocks and enjoy some quiet time. It is a place to experience the silence of nature, or maybe have a love affair with nature herself! So you should not miss this place on your Daringbadi tour.

Hill View Park, Butterfly Park and hill Top Viewpoint

All these three are close to each other and fell on our way back from the Lovers’ Point to Daringbadi. The Butterfly Park is located within the Hill View Park and the Hill Top Viewpoint is just opposite to that of the Hill View Park.

The Hill View Park has a beautiful and well-maintained garden, a garden of medicinal plants. There is also a display of the Kutia Kondh tribe inside the Hill View Park.

The Butterfly Garden is a beautiful flowering garden inside the Hill View Park. True to its name, you can spot a number of butterflies there.

The Hill Top Viewpoint has a children’s park and it is the best place to have a panoramic view of Daringbadi and the surrounding area from there. I think the place is also good for watching the sunrise, but the park only opens after 7 AM in the morning.

Sunset Point or Silent Valley

This place is around 2 km from the Daringbadi town and is actually a viewpoint. From the vantage point, the entire valley can be seen and is the best place to watch the sunset.

What are the p laces to visit near Daringbadi , Kashmir of Odisha?

There are a number of interesting places near Daringbadi. Taptapani, a place having hot water springs is around 2 hours drive from here. You can also visit Belghar Sanctuary, Phulbani forest, Putudi Waterfalls (located near Phulbani) from Daringbadi. We could not visit these places as we had to return the next day. You can also visit Gopalpur-on-sea, Manglajodi and Vetnai from Daringbadi.

How to reach Daringbadi from Kolkata?

The nearest railway station to Daringbadi is Berhampur . From Howrah, there are a few trains that go to Berhampur. Alternatively, you can also take a train to Bhubaneswar. Daringbadi is around 245 km from Bhubaneswar. There are day and night buses available from Bhubaneswar towards Daringbadi.

Our road trip to Daringbadi started from Kolkata. The first day, we drove 445 km to Bhubaneswar and stopped for the night there. The next day, we drove from Bhubaneswar to Daringbadi via NH16 and NH59. In the middle, we took a detour from Aska to Vetnai, the blackbuck habitat in Odisha.

Daringbadi tour itinerary

Day 1: kolkata to bhubaneswar.

We started from Kolkata at around 6 AM in the morning and drove towards Bhubaneswar. We took our breakfast stop at Kolaghat and then continued our drive towards Bhubaneswar. As we approached Bhubaneswar, we could see the devastating effect of the cyclone Fani. Uprooted trees, broken and bent signposts were seen all over the way. We had seen the devastation on the television, but seeing the effects in person was quite different. We reached Bhubaneswar around 2:30 PM.

Day 2: Bhubaneswar to Daringbadi via Vetnai

Another day of long drive started quite early in the morning. The roads in Odisha are smooth and driving was quite enjoyable. While on the way, we suddenly decided to take a detour to visit Vetnai. The speciality of Vetnai is that you can see a lot of black bucks there roaming around freely. Vetnai is about 5 km from Aska, one of the main towns on the way to Daringbadi.

To be honest, we did not know blackbucks are found in the eastern parts of India also. I had come to know about Vetnai from an article that I read somewhere. While trying to figure the way on Google maps, I found out that Vetnai lies only a few kilometers detour from Aska or Asika , a small town on our way. When I proposed the idea to visit Vetnai, it was met with enthusiasm as all of us wanted to see those rare deer.

Vetnai is the natural habitat of blackbucks in Odisha. Strangely enough, the area is not a protected forest zone. We reached Vetnai at around 11 AM. There is a watchtower from where we could see the animals. But the locals warned us that we might not see any blackbucks at this time of the day. The animals are mostly seen in the late afternoon at around 3 or 4 PM. Nevertheless, we drove towards the watchtower along the rough and dusty roads.

Did we see the blackbucks?

We stopped our car before a vast expanse of field. It was scorching hot outside and we strained our eyes to spot any blackbucks there. It was totally stark and nothing could be seen. Maybe, the animals, unlike us, did not come out of their home in such hot weather.

We felt quite disappointed, but then suddenly Agni spotted a few animals grazing in the fields. We strained our eyes to look at them. And yes, there they were. Not one or two, but quite a number of them grazing freely on the field. We walked towards the herd to get a clear view. And what a great view it was! A number of Blackbucks were grazing on the field. And when they saw us, a few were startled. They looked at us stealthily. A few kept on grazing while some of them started moving elsewhere.

I had always heard that a deer looks immensely beautiful when they stretch their body and run. I had so long seen then running on television on National Geographic. It was the first time I saw them running in front of me. And yes, they look extremely beautiful. It is just like poetry. I was so mesmerized looking at them, that I forgot to take pictures. Thankfully, better sense prevailed on Agni and he took a few pictures.

The sight of the blackbucks completely made our day. All the hot weather, perspiration, hunger, running around in the heat were all forgotten. Just imagine the number of blackbucks one could see if they came at a proper time! With happiness in our heart, we started from Vetnai towards Daringbadi.

Road towards Daringbadi, Kashmir of Odisha

As we approached Daringbadi, the weather became a bit cooler. The roads are beautiful with trees on either side of the road. Odisha does have some very well maintained and beautiful roads where driving can be a pleasure. Finally travelling through the winding roads under the cool canopy of the trees, we reached Daringbadi at around 2 PM.

Day 3: Sightseeing at Daringbadi Tour

We had seen the scenic beauty of the place while driving here. The dense woods and the marvels of nature in the form of rivers, waterfalls and pine forests were yet to be explored by us. So after having our breakfast, we were all ready to explore this beautiful, yet unexplored gem of Odisha.

Day 4: Daringbadi to Kolkata

This was a long long day of driving. We started from Daringbadi at around 9 AM in the morning and after a long drive, reached Kolkata around 11 PM at night. The drive was long, but the experience we had on the road was incomparable.

Where to stay at Daringbadi?

Daringbadi is yet to see the flush and rush of tourists. It has a few hotels and resorts. We stayed at Hotel Mid Town, which is an average hotel. If you are going to Daringbadi, stay at one of the resorts there for a better accommodation experience. But you need to book the resorts much in advance. We did not get rooms even when we tried a month earlier.

For sightseeing, you can get a car from your hotel and explore the place.

Where to eat at Daringbadi ?

There are a few eateries around Daringbadi. Most of the hotels do not have a restaurant. So you have to get food at some other restaurant. For breakfast, there are a few eateries along the road. You can have puris, idli and uttapam from there. For lunch and dinner, do visit the Hill View Restaurant. They serve amazing dishes and we loved the chhenapodas there.

What is the best time to visit Daringbadi?

You can visit Daringbadi anytime during the year. Winters will be cold. During the summer, the climate is warm. Infact, when we visited in June beginning, the weather was quite hot. Monsoons bring rain and with its lush greenery. I am sure the place will look as beautiful and green as Bangriposi during the rains.

Petrol stations at Daringbadi: There is one petrol pump at Daringbadi. But carry cash there. They do not accept cards.

Is this place is good for Bachelors ???

Yes, why not?

Have bitter feelings of Daringbari Tour in Feb’2018 along with 98 DIET students. Very remote place and not suitable for tourists bus. Scorpio, Xylo, Jeep like vehicles are switable.

Daringbadi is a small hilly place. It cannot accommodate the load of 100 people together. Its not fit for excursions.

This reminds me of my Daringbadi trip in January 2020. At one point, Daringbadi was about to cancelled from our iterinery. But I was hell bent on visiting Daringbadi and thank God I refused to agree to change of plan. Our Daringbadi trip was a whirlwind one. We reached Daringbadi early morning and left that night itself. We used overnight buses from Bhubaneswar. Daringabdi is so beautiful. Especially the Sun set point. I will always cherish my experience.

The weather here is pleasant throughout the year, September to March is a good time to visit.

Does it snow in Daringbadi?

During winter, the temperature touches zero degrees centigrade. In December 2019, Daringbadi experienced snowfall. However, please be informed that there is no occurrence of heavy snowfall in Daringbadi. It’s light to moderate. It is normally sunny during the day but after sunset, the temperature plummets drastically making it biting cold.

How to reach Daringbadi

Daringbadi can be reached in 3 ways – by Railways, Roadways, and Airways.

By Railways: The nearest station  is Behrampur, situated approximately 120 Kms away. A private vehicle easily takes you to there within 3 hours.

By Roadway: From Bhubaneswar, this place is 251 KMS and frequently connected by bus services or you can hire private vehicles as well.

By Airways: Biju Patnaik airport is the nearest one. The distance between the two is 246 KMS and takes around 5 hours 23 minutes by a private vehicle.

What are the main attractions of Daringbadi / Places to Visit in Daringbadi

Belghar Village & Sanctuary This is a renowned hilltop eco-village. This tranquil place also has a sanctuary called Belghar Sanctuary. Lush mountains ensconce this area. There are many wild animals especially elephants. There are a lot of Flora and Fauna in here.

Hill View Point This is a very popular sightseeing spot.  This can truly be called a vantage point as tourists can see the 360-degree vista of Daringbadi and its surroundings. There is a Park on this hill-top which has two watchtowers. The park is very nicely maintained has well-manicured.

Midubanda Waterfall This waterfall is situated at a distance of 16 km from Daringbadi. Just note that you have to get down around 181 stairs to reach the base of one of best the waterfalls in Daringbadi.

Coffee Garden or Coffee Plantations The climatic condition of the area is very much susceptible to the growth of coffee. Hence coffee is harvested all year round. The coffee garden is looked after by the Soil Conservation and Forest Department of Odisha.

Lovers Point This is basically a picnic spot in Daringbadi. This serene spot is 13 km from Daringbadi and is very scenic. The rocky hurdles are like the gateway to the picturesque vista in front of you. There is a small stream that flows through the big rocks and makes a melodious gurgling sound.

Emu Breeding Centre This enclosed area has quite a few emu bids.

Khasada Waterfall  is situated around 95 KM away from the silk city Berhampur and 169 KM from State Capital Bhubaneswar.

Harabhangi Dam

Harabhangi dam is very scenic to watch.It is in Gajpati district on the way of Bhramhapur (84km) from Daringbadi

Tara Tarini It is a temple complex. The shrine is on the top of the Purnagiri hills. Tara and Tarini are the twin goddesses who are worshipped here. This is one of the four Adi Shakti Peeths. This temple is situated at a height of 708 feet over sea-level. There are three ways to reach this temple. You can either take a rope-way or climb 999 steps or take the motorable road. The panoramic view that you will get to see is also very striking. The Eastern Ghats, verdant forests, lush paddy fields, and Rushikulya making its swaying movement through the grassland.

Gopalpur Gopalpur is an expansive sea-beach which has a very prominent mention in history. It served the sea-farers during the ancient Kalinga period. Gopalpur was an important port during World War 1. The soldiers would commence their journey towards Burma from here. Gopalpur also wears the crown as having the first hotel in Odisha. The sea here is rough. The beach is dotted with casurina groves. The rising and the setting of the sun paints a very scenic picture of the place.

Tampara Lake Though this is an understated lake, yet it is very captivating. This is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Odisha. It is a huge lake. The lake is located in Chatrapur. The distance of this lake from Bhubaneshwar is 148 km and from Berhampur its 30 km. this scenic place is away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Howrah Station - Start for Daringbadi

Kolkata to Daringbadi - Daringbadi tour itinerary starts from Kolkata where visitors are supposed to meet at Howrah Junction. The train journey will commence from Kolkata. The scheduled time for the festival special train, HWH-YPR SPL (Howrah – Yesvantpur) is at 10.55 P.M from Howrah. There are nine major stations between the Howrah Junction and Berhampur also popularly known as Berhampur.

The train will reach the destination in the following day at 7:30 AM. Our Daringbadi tour guide from kolkata arranges for similar train in case of unavailability of the special train. Our expert has selected this train as by the time our visitors reach the destination it is already morning and this gives them the view while finishing the entire route to Daringbadi.

There is couple of places worth a visit while on the way of Daringbadi including a long 80 KM journey from Behrampur to Surada Dam surrounded by the verdant mountains perfect for photographers to also capture few great clicks preserving the memory of the place. Sir Daniel Mackinnon Hamilton (6 December 1860 – 6 December 1939) was a renowned Scottish businessman. He was the builder of rural construction programmes at the time of Indian National Movement. He has established Consumer Co oparative Society, Model Farm, Gosaba Central Co oparative Bank, Jamini Rice mill Rural reconstruction Institute & etc. He has been closely associated with noble laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi.

In the year 1903 he bought land of '' . . . about 900 acres in Gosaba and had it reclaimed by feeling the woods and rising embankment on the Riverside.

The home of the Royal Bengal Tiger, Sajnekhali is also a heaven for bird watchers. Tourists can enjoy the panoramic view of Sunderban from Sajnekhali Watch Tower. One can have a glimpse of animals like tiger, deer etc. Nature Interpretation Center has been established, which is protected by a wired fence. Another worth-mentioning spot adjacent to it is crocodile and turtle farm. Other animals that have taken shelter are Fishing Cats, Wild Boar, Macaques, Flying Fox, Chital, Pangolin and others.

It forms the core area of Sunderban National Park. It is the highest tower in Sunderban - it has a height of 50feet. It takes near about 6 hours to reach Bonie camp from Pakhiralay. It is at a hand-shaking distance from the Bay of Bengal. One can have a glimpse of wildlife of Sunderban frequently.

Kalash camp lies at the estuary of River Matla. It lies outside the core area, so visitors, mainly with armed guards, are permitted to reach the beach of Kalash.

The place is still so empty and very few villages are found in the full stretch of Daringbadi road. The main source of earning of the people who are living here are either by farming or cattle. In our way, we notice quite a few number of times the village people in their lungi and a t-shirt along with a big conical bamboo hat on the head and rattan sticks in their hand. They are busy to take their cattle from one place to another.

Entering the village a unique feeling gets through our body. Leaving all the hustle bustle of our daily life far behind, here we are standing with an open arm to feel the cool breeze full of pure oxygen, continuously passing through our soul making us much more energetic.

Daringbadi ~ also known as the Native land of Tribals in British era.

Before coming to our explore the story, just as an information, good to know why this place, known as Daringbadi? (Are you curious, then read next paragraph).

In the time of British era, this place brought to light by the hand of a British officer, Dering and he named the village after his name Deringbari. But gradually over the time, it spelled as Daringbadi.

Natural Beauty of Daringbadi

Now lets come back to our travel story. One thing I forget to tell you that we got heavy rainfall in our whole journey to Daringbadi. But we were so much thankful to God that the climate favored us during our destination visit.

After continuous traveling through both smooth and rough roads for 2 and half hours within mild to heavy rainfall, we almost lost the hope and felt so sad that we couldn't explore the majestic beauty of Daringbadi. But within next 15 min, our driver stopped the car and told us that we reached Daringbadi waterfall.

We felt so relieved and cherished the beauty all around.

1st Destination – Dasingbadi waterfalls:

After getting out from the car a wild roaring sound of running water is coming in our ears and we get so avid. The sound gets echoed and made the whole surrounding so vivacious.

The path for going downward is a bit difficult for aged persons. The path has the combination of both steps and slopes. Tourist department has already started development work since this place very newly came in the limelight of tourism.

After crossing approx 100 steps, our eyes get stuck to one of the most endearing phenomena of nature. The splendor of the

crystal clear water cascading down the crag and its thundering sound are mind-blowing. The sprinkle of cool water on the body has a miracle power to make the tourist both energetic and fresh. We are standing here with our eyes closed just to feel the pure nature within us.

Dasingbadi Waterfalls

The waterfalls are surrounded by different types of big trees and small flowering plants. We can identify some of them but most are wild plants.

Suddenly we discover that one particular strand of waterfalls is slightly reddish in color. For a second we thought it was sand water but later we got to know that this was the mixture of red soil and river stream which get connected with the waterfalls. The stream under the waterfalls is also turbid due to red soil.

After enjoying the beauty and taking some photographs we are coming up to start our journey along with one of the most beautiful experiences.

Our car wheels again started rolling and stopped to our next destination.

2nd destination – lover’s point :.

Our next destination is Daringbadi lovers point. Our car took a turn and for the first time, we are on the off route.

Driving in the red soil within the spine of two small Hills leaving behind the beautiful waterfalls, a rocky hurdle opened up its scenic view in front of us.

When we first heard the name we thought it is like any other places where lovers used to spend time. But here the name actually symbolize the Love Connection of nature with the living beings on the earth.

Lover’s Point View

The bale and the balance of rocks and water along with the breezing sound of running water won't disappoint you at all. In fact, we really love to stay there and enjoy the beauty of the place.

The water rolled out from the far mountains and dribbled in between the curvy paths of the rocks and slowly regain its pace as it goes forward.

Sometimes the water gets messed with the rocks and sometimes rocks made the path so that the stream can flow in peace. The adornment of big and small rocks helps the stream to keep the focus on its way. The lush greenery surrounds all around and makes the nature more full of life.

We don't know the name of the stream and from where it came. But by now we realize the name lovers point has a significant meaning.

Surada Ghai Dam in the Ganjam district was built across the Padma River in the late nineteenth century. The Dam is amidst lush green forest and beautiful mountains, which look mesmerising during sunrise.

The government of Odisha has set up Biju Patnaik Picnic Spot for tourists near Surada Dam. The spot has a new jetty, a beautiful Park and Biju Minar. There are Sidheswar and Maa Khunteswari Temples nearby.

8. Khunteswari Temple

Maa Khunteswari temple is on a hill near Surada dam in Daringbadi. In this temple, goddesses Kali, Lakshmi and Durga are worshipped through a single idol. From here, tourists glimpse tall hills and the beautiful Surada dam.

The place attracts many visitors during winter due to its mild and pleasant climate. Visitors reach Khunteswari temple via a steep and small ghat road.

Trek to this waterfall goes through a thick forest and rocky terrain. You can hear the gurgling of water from a distance.

10. Mandasaru Nature Camp

18. Putudi Waterfall

It’s a perfect tourist spot for weekend parties during winter. The fall creates dense roaring music and Clearwater flowing from the hilltop.

20. Chilika Lake

The sea at Gopalpur is too rough to swim. This east-facing beach offers spectacular views of sunset and sunrise. Visitors enjoy quiet strolls along the banks to rejuvenate themselves. People who love seafood must visit the fish market early in the morning.

23. Gopalpur Lighthouse

The lighthouse is a skeletal tower set up in 1925, and the Odisha Tourism Department looks after it.  

Gopalpur lighthouse withstood two major cyclones- “super cyclonic storm” (1999) and “Cyclone Phailin” (2013). The monument currently faces significant erosion from the Bay of Bengal. Now, it’s restricted to entering the public as per safety protocols.

24. Taratarini temple

Taratarini temple on a hilltop is a popular religious spot in South Odisha. Rushikulya River griddles around the temple. It’s dedicated to twin sisters- Goddess Tara and Goddesses Tarini. 

Tourists can walk 999 steps from the foothills or take the bus or cable car to reach the temple at the top amidst green plantations. Thousands of visitors, picnickers, and devotees visit the Taratarini temple.

The famous species of wild elephants and deer are also found here. An immense collection of commercial and medicinal plants lives in the sanctuary. Besides animals, many species of birds are also sighted here.

Kuntia Kondha (tribal people) lives in the hills of Belghar. They follow an ancient tradition, collect essentials from forests, and are friendly & hospitable.

26. Kalinga Ghati

Kalinga Ghati of Kandhamal district is famous for its natural beauty, birds and animal species. The zigzag roads of this ‘ghati’ spiral around tall hills resembling a serpent. Driving along these roads gives visitors an adventurous vibe.

There is a vast silviculture garden on the Ghati, which houses many medicinal plants and is populated by rubber & dense bamboo plants. Kalinga Ghati was the abode of many freedom fighters during British rule in India.

Taptapani lies amidst the dense forest and tall hills. The place remains crowded with tourists and devotees. Visitors enjoy serene nature, views of sunset and sunrise, moonlight at night, a glimpse of wild animals, tribal music & dance, and birds chirping. Near this hot spring lies a deer park.

28. Taptapani Deer Park

Taptapani Deer Park is a popular tourist spot in Ganjam. Over 40,000 visitors explore the place every year. Around 150 deer of four species, namely barking deer, spotted deer, sambar and blackbuck. A perennial stream running across the park provides food and water.

Various deer, like barking and spotted deer, live in the park. Besides, deer, ratel, antelope, monkey, leopard, sloth bear, python, civet, parakeet, birds, parrot, peacock, etc., are also found.

Several flower species planted inside are major tourist attractions. Deer Park attracts visitors from November to March.

30. Kalijai Island

Maa Kalijai temple on the island of Lake Chilika is home to Goddess Kalijai. The place was named “Kalijai” after a newly-married girl called “Jaai”. She was going to her in-laws’ place on this island with her father.

Their boat was trapped in a severe cyclone, and everybody except Jaai was safe (She died). After this, local people worshipped her as a goddess. They consider her to be an excerpt of Maa Kali.

The island is a famous pilgrimage and tourist attraction. During Makar Sankranti (in January), a grand fair is organised on Kalijai Island.

31. Biranchi Narayan Temple

Biranchi Narayan Sun Temple is Odisha’s 2nd Surya mandir in Buguda, Ganjam. In 1790, King Srikara Bhanjadeo refurbished this temple. Biranchi Narayan (Surya) is the temple’s presiding deity. His image was discovered among the ruins of Malatigad. 

Forty-six pillars were used to construct the roof and entangled wooden designs. The walls are made of mortar, and the lime & ceiling is carved from timber. Biranchi Narayan temple faces west, and sun rays fall on the deity’s feet during sunset. Epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana are depicted on the walls of this temple.

Gopalpur and Daringbadi tour and travel plan from Kolkata

Daringbadi is a unique place having hills, forests, and rivers. I visited Daringbadi with my family via Brahmapur. We took an overnight train from Kolkata Santragachi station and reached Brahmapur in the morning.

En route, we visited the Ghanteshwar mandir and Sorada Reservoir and Dam on the first day . After resting in our hotel, we went sightseeing. On this journey, Mr Ravindra (Phone – 80004-01544) was our driver. He has good control of the car and knows about Daringbari and Gopalpur. Refer my name and ask him for additional discounts.

The first place I visited was Daringbadi Coffee Plantation. We saw coffee fruits & black pepper plants there. I purchased coffee and black pepper.

The next destination was Daringbadi Nature Park (Butterfly Park). It had many statues of animals & humans. Just in front of Butterfly Park was Hill View Park.

Afterwards, we visited Silent Valley (Sunset Point); the sunset was not visible because of cloudy weather. My first day at Daringbadi ended on a beautiful note.

We started our tour from Daringbadi Lover’s Point on the second day . The beauty of this place was mesmerizing. Greenery surrounded it & a stream ran across. Afterwards, I reached Madhuban Emu Park, and from there, we proceeded to see Mandasaru Waterfall.

The journey down passed through a problematic rocky route. But the beauty of this waterfall is worth the trouble. To have our lunch, we reached Mandasaru Valley Nature Camp (bookings are done online, cost INR 5000/ 2 person approx).

From the terrace of this resort, we sighted Magnet Hill. They say that the magnet comes from this hill, and thus aeroplanes don’t fly over it.

On the third day, we left our hotel early at 06:00 am to visit Gopalpur Beach. En route, we first sighted Midubanda Waterfall, for which you must climb 130 steps. Then, Bamuni Devi Waterfall, and from there, our next stop was Jiranga Buddhists Monastery. This monastery gave me a feeling of being in Ladakh.

Afterwards, we visited another fall called Khasada Waterfall (this place was littered with garbage due to lack of maintenance). Later in the day, we saw a temple at Taptapani Hot Springs.

After lunch, I finally reached Gopalpur. The beach was right in front of our hotel, and Gopalpur beach was less crowded. We enjoyed many rides, including a jet ski (INR 500/ person approx) & banana boat (INR 200/ per person for 10 minutes). There were many food stalls around the marine drive.

For our 4th day, we first travelled to Barakul to enjoy boating on Lake Chilika (INR 1100 for ten people). Then we reached Kalijai Island (in the middle of the water), which houses a 500-year-old Kalijai Mandir.

Afterwards, I went boating for a second time at Ramba (INR 1000 approx). There, I spotted Breakfast Island. It’s believed kings had breakfast on this island in olden times. Nearby was the Ghantashila Hill, formed of stones, where Lord Shiva (Siddheshwar) is worshipped.

After lunch, I left for Taratarini Temple, which is reached by a ropeway (INR 60 approx). Taratarini temple is at a climb of 999 steps; from there, River Rishikulya is visible. After on the same day, we went to Puri .

How to Reach Daringbadi by road, rail, or air?

You can reach Daringbadi in different ways- by road, air and rail.

Tourists reach Bhubaneswar , which is 251 km from Daringbadi. Bus and private vehicles are hired to reach the hill station in approximately 6 hours. Personal cars are available from the closest locations like Phulbani, Behrampur & Balliguda.

Alternatively, visitors arrive in Brahmapur and travel to Daringbadi via car or bus. The journey is 130 km, which takes around three hours and fifteen minutes. 

Behrampur is the imminent railhead to Daringbadi (125 km). Public buses or private cabs are hired from the railway station to reach Daringbadi in 3 hours (approx). 

Biju Patnaik is the imminent airport to Daringbadi (290 km). Private vehicles are hired outside the airport to reach the hill station in about 3 hours.  

How to Reach Gopalpur?

There are three different ways to reach Gopalpur : road, air, and rail.

Motorable roads of Berhampur (16 km), Puri (242 km), Barkul (75 km) and Bhubaneswar (180 km) easily connect to Gopalpur. Public and private buses or cars are available from all these four places.

Berhampur is the closest railhead to Gopalpur (15 km). From the outside railway station, autorickshaws are hired to reach Gopalpur.

Biju Patnaik International Airport is the nearest airport (148 km). From there, private and public vehicles are hired to reach Gopalpur. Alternatively, the airport at Bhubaneswar is 190 km away from Gopalpur. Tourists hire private cabs or public buses to Behrampur, just 15 km from Gopalpur, and Autorickshaws undertake the journey. 

Daringbadi or Gopalpur reach all the 28 tourist spots mentioned. These destinations are easily accessible from Bhubaneswar, Brahmapur, Berhampur, etc., by road, rail and air transport.

As Hurricane Beryl moves across the Caribbean, a number of cruise lines have changed itineraries in the area in an effort to avoid the storm.

▶ Norwegian Cruise Line altered nearly the entire itinerary for a week-long sailing on its Norwegian Breakaway ship that departed from Miami, Florida, on Sunday. The line canceled stops in Honduras, Harvest Caye in Belize, and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico, according to a letter sent to guests that the line shared with USA TODAY. The ship will instead visit Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas, Tortola, and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas instead.

“While we share your disappointment, these modifications were made with great consideration as your safety, and that of our crew, is always our number one priority,” the letter said.

The line similarly changed a week-long sailing aboard Norwegian Jade that left Port Canaveral on Saturday, replacing planned calls in Falmouth, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel with San Juan, Puerto Rico, Tortola and Puerto Plata.

▶ Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy ship – which set sail on a week-long cruise from Port Canaveral on Saturday – will not visit Falmouth as planned on Wednesday. The stop will be replaced with a sea day .

The center of the storm is expected to “move quickly across the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea today,” passing near Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands the following day, the National Hurricane Center said.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and the travel rush is already heating up.

Millions of Americans are preparing to get out of town sometime in the coming holiday week. That will likely mean busy roads, as well as packed airports and train stations.

Motor club AAA projects that some 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles (80 kilometers) or more from their homes over a nine-day Independence Day travel period — surpassing pre-pandemic numbers for the U.S. holiday. And the Transportation Security Administration expects to screen over 32 million individuals in airports from this Thursday through July 8, up 5.4% from last year’s numbers.

Are you traveling for the Fourth? Here’s a rundown of what you need to know.

When is the best time to hit the road for July Fourth?

Smooth sailing for travel around any holiday is never a given. But avoiding the most hectic times, when others are rushing out of town, is a good way to start.

If you’re traveling by car for the Fourth of July, it’s best to hit the road in the morning, according to transportation data and insights provider INRIX. Peak traffic congestion varies by location, INRIX data published by AAA shows, but the worst times to drive on, or leading up to, the holiday are generally between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Either way, be prepared for the roads to be jammed.

“Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said in a prepared statement.

July Fourth falls on a Thursday this year, and many travelers will likely take Friday July 5th off to extend their trip into a four-day weekend. Drivers in large metro areas can expect the biggest delays on Wednesday July 3 and Sunday July 7 — as travelers leave and return to town, Pishue added.

And if you’re renting a car ahead of July Fourth, the busiest pickup days will be Friday, Saturday and Wednesday before the holiday, AAA notes.

When will airports be busiest?

Airports will also likely be packed all week long — but the TSA expects most people will take to the skies on Friday.

It anticipates that it will screen more than 3 million individuals Friday. That would surpass the agency’s current record for most people screened on a single day, which reached just under 3 million last Sunday.

“We expect this summer to be our busiest ever,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said, adding that travel typical peaks around Independence Day.

Last year, the busiest day for Fourth of July air travel was also the Friday ahead of the holiday, TSA data shows. If past trends hold, travel will likely be higher on the days before and after the Fourth — particularly closer to the weekend. In 2023, for example, more than 2 million people were screened on the Fourth, which landed on a Tuesday last year, down from 2.88 million the Friday before.

What should I do if my flight is delayed or canceled?

Flights can be delayed or canceled for an array of reasons — from plane-specific mechanical problems to major storms impacting popular travel paths.

If your flight is canceled, airlines are required to provide refunds for customers, even if the cancellation is due to weather . Delays are trickier, because they typically have to meet certain criteria for relief, such as refunds or compensation — but carriers will often give customers to chance to switch to alternative flights, if available, at no cost.

In April, the Biden administration issued final rules that include requiring airlines to provide automatic cash refunds within a few days for canceled flights and “significant” delays. Those rules are set to take effect over the next two years, but the Department of Transportation has a site that lets consumers see the commitments each airline has made for refunds and covering other expenses when flights are canceled or significantly delayed.

Always check your itinerary before leaving home

It’s better to be stuck at home than locked in hourslong traffic or stranded in an airport terminal. Before heading out the door this holiday week, do yourself a favor and check the status of your travel plans.

Was your flight, train or bus ride delayed? Are there are traffic incidents set to disrupt your drive? And what about the weather? A quick look through your itinerary — such as trip updates on a carrier’s website — checking weather forecasts and monitoring traffic safety through services like the 511 hotline or your phone’s navigation apps can go a long way toward avoiding travel misery.

Here are a few more tips to keep in mind:

— Leave early: There are more people everywhere during a holiday week, so lines will be longer and roads will be busier. Give yourself more time to get to your destination or to make your way through airport security.

— Keep an eye on the weather — and not just for your destination: Look at the weather for your entire travel path. Even if it’s sunny skies both at home and the place you’re headed, it’s important to keep an eye out for any storms in between. You may need to do some rerouting.

— Be kind: A trip delay or cancellation can be really frustrating — but if you’re running into disruptions, chances are others are too. Customer service agents have a lot on their plate at this time of year, and it’s important to be patient and respectful as they try to help you.
