13 Luxury Vacations That Are Surprisingly Affordable

These luxury vacations offer incredible experiences and five-star amenities without breaking the bank.

Planning a vacation is never an easy task, especially when it's time to talk about budget. But luxury vacations don't actually need to break the bank. We think it's time for you to take the trip of a lifetime without spending your life savings, so we've found 13 vacation ideas that will leave you in awe of the trip and the price.

Stay in a French Castle for $88

While some Airbnb listings — like Kylie Jenner's $50-million rental in Turks and Caicos — are only for the very wealthy, the hospitality industry also has hidden gems for the more budget-conscious traveler. Jet off to France and live out your royal dreams staying in a three-bedroom castle with a pool for as little as $88/night.

Go Glamping for Under $50 a Night

Stylish glamping stays from tents to private chalets are available at a range of price points, with several options under $100 a night — there are even eco-bungalows in Mexico's Akumal from $47 a night .

Find Your Joie De Vivre in Paris for Under $200 a Night

Experience the fabulous life of a French local with Paris Perfect . The vacation rental agency provides accommodation options at some of the most unreal apartments in the City of Lights with rates from less than $200 a night. You can even filter by apartments with an Eiffel Tower view, which start at $335 a night. Plus, since you'll have a kitchen, you can even save more by cooking some meals at home.

Fly Private at Economy Prices

A ticket through JSX , a semi private-flight experience at (almost) commercial airline prices, gives you access to a private terminal, where you can go from parking to takeoff in 15 minutes. No more being stressed out about getting to the airport early, waiting in long lines, or squeezing into a coach seat. The catch: Flights are only available between a few cities, including many on the West Coast and in Texas as well as Miami, Florida, and Westchester County, New York.

Spring for A Cheap and Chic Colombian Getaway

Colombia's port city of Cartagena seems to be on everyone's travel bucket list these days. Make that dream trip a reality with an affordable booking at Oz Hotel , a chic spot with nightly rates starting at $39 a night. It's located near the beach and also has a rooftop terrace with city views.

Stay in Dar es Salaam Instead of Zanzibar Resorts

Tourists — especially newlyweds — are quick to head to resorts in Zanzibar, Tanzania. While there's no denying the quality of these expensive seaside accommodations, don't forget that it's possible to have a similar luxury beach experience on the Tanzanian mainland for a much more affordable price. The Ramada by Wyndham in Dar es Salaam — with rooms from $147 a night — is located along the shores of Jangwani beach. It's a budget-friendly way to enjoy the waves of the Indian Ocean while taking in the nearby city center. The hotel also offers airport shuttles and late checkout .

Live It Up in New York City

Instead of squeezing yourself into Manhattan for an average, over-priced hotel room, venture out into Brooklyn for equally trendy neighborhoods — here's looking at you, Bushwick and Williamsburg — for much more affordable rates.

Book a Taste of Thailand

Opt for a stress-free yet unforgettable getaway to Southeast Asia on this Friendly Planet vacation across Thailand, a 10-day trip that will only set you back $1,849 a person. With roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations, and visits to some of the country's most historic attractions (such as Ayutthaya, an ancient city and UNESCO World Heritage Site) included, this deal is hard to pass up.

Stay at a Five-star Resort on the Amalfi Coast for Less Than $300 a Night

This five-star beauty is elegant and historic. What used to be a 13th-century monastery has been converted into an Amalfi Coast hotel with some of the most spectacular views around. Almost all of the rooms look out to sea, and even though it's perched high up a cliff, it's only a five-minute walk to the harbor and city center. There's also a majestic Catholic church at the hotel for those looking to tie the knot. Rates start at $274 a night if you book direct, though you may be able to score an even lower deal on sites like Expedia.

Book a Standalone Casita in Mexico With Private Pool Views

A stay at one of the oceanside suites at Hotel Las Brisas in Acapulco, Mexico, is your chance to truly treat yourself without breaking the bank. Starting at $157 a night, you can book a casita with a private pool overlooking incredible views.

Stay in a Cabana on the Beach in Tulum for $200 a Night

Stunning accommodations and private beach access make Ahau Tulum worth visiting. Depending on the time of year, you could book a stay in one of the charming Bali Huts starting at $200 a night.

Relax on the Siem Reap River in Cambodia

Breathe easy with a stay at this intimate 36-room, five-star hotel alongside the Siem Reap River in Cambodia. All of the rooms at Jaya House River Park have either balcony views or direct garden or pool access, and it's just a short ride to Angkor Wat. Nightly room rates start around $109 a night, depending on the season.

Fall in Love With Franschhoek, South Africa

Jess Macdonald/Travel + Leisure

The sunny vineyards of Franschhoek, South Africa are a wine-lover's paradise, and planning a trip during the low season will help you score hotels at unbelievably low prices. As an example, check out the Franschhoek Boutique Hotel , which starts at $100 a night and is situated a few steps from one of the trolley stops that conveniently connects you to various wineries in the area.

Take a walk down Atlantic Avenue , the largest main street in Florida, which is flanked by dozens of art galleries, restaurants, bars, and boutique shops. Stay steps from all the action at the 141-room The Ray , which features tropical modern decor, a rooftop pool, gym, restaurants and bars, and in-room amenities like eucalyptus bed linens, Frette towels and robes, and Byredo bath products.

With eight resorts totaling about 9,000 rooms, there are plenty of options—most for less than $50 a night. By day, get outdoors and kayak or river cruise along the Colorado River, which runs through the heart of town. By night, live like a high roller with gourmet meals, world-class shows, and casino games. Go big and stay at Aquarius Casino Resort , Laughlin's largest hotel, which offers room and show packages.

For a shopping vacation: East Rutherford, New Jersey

6.  For a shopping vacation: East Rutherford, New Jersey

Just five miles from Manhattan, East Rutherford, New Jersey, is unlikely to be top-of-mind when seeking a shopping holiday, but the massive 3-million-square-foot American Dream mall and entertainment center has many of the same designer shops as Los Angeles and New York. The palatial shoppers' paradise offers glitzy and glamorous shopping from designers like Gucci and Tiffany & Co. along with cost-conscious retailers plus one dozen family-friendly attractions, including Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park , the largest indoor theme park in the western hemisphere, Big Snow , North America's only indoor real-snow park, and Skudin Surf , an indoor freshwater wave pool for surfers and wannabe surfers. While there are hotels nearby, soothe aching feet after a day of retail therapy at SoJo Spa Club , nine miles away. For an inexpensive island-y getaway: Florida Keys

7.  For an inexpensive island-y getaway: Florida Keys

Dreaming of a Hawaiian getaway, but your wallet won't cooperate? Head down to the Conch Republic off Florida's southernmost tip. Connected by the 110-mile Overseas Highway, each island in the 120-mile island chain is a unique piece of paradise. Snorkeling here is magical, particularly at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , the first underwater preserve in the U.S., which has a coral reef and an 8.5-foot bronze sculpture of Jesus Christ. No trip to the Florida Keys is complete without a walk down Duval Street in Key West. Just around the corner from Duval Street, Simonton Court Historic Inn & Guesthouse is a former cigar factory turned boutique hotel that is an adults-only oasis.

For a bargain in the northeast: Block Island, Rhode Island

8.  For a bargain in the northeast: Block Island, Rhode Island

Located just nine miles off Rhode Island, Block Island has 17 miles of beaches punctuated with lighthouses, perfect for a relaxing New England getaway on the island that is 3 miles by 7 miles. Spend the night at Spring House Hotel , the oldest and largest hotel on the island. Built in 1852, the 32-room Victorian-style hotel offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and impeccable hospitality.

For an outdoorsy adventure: Denver, Colorado

9.  For an outdoorsy adventure: Denver, Colorado

The Mile High City is packed with everything you could want on a vacation for a fraction of the cost of other cities. While there's plenty to do indoors like touring the U.S. Mint and seeing how candy is made at Hammond's Candies, it's the outdoors that beckon, including nearby Red Rocks Amphitheater and Mesa Verde National Park and 90-minutes away, Rocky Mountain National Park . Stay at The Maven , a dog-friendly boutique hotel with loft-style rooms in the Dairy Block micro-district. The lively alley behind the hotel is packed with excellent bars and restaurants and the hotel is a treasure trove of art with more than 700 paintings, sculptures, and photographs all from Colorado artists.

10.  For a big city escape with out the big prices: Brooklyn, New York

New York City is one of the most popular tourist destinations, but it's also one of the most expensive. Enjoy iconic Big Apple sights, but save massive amounts of money by staying—and playing—in Brooklyn. Book a room at The William Vale , the only luxury hotel in hipster haven Williamsburg, and you might not even want to leave Brooklyn. Each of the hotel's 183 rooms has a balcony and floor-to-ceiling windows with impressive views of Manhattan. From catching shows at Brooklyn Bowl or the Brooklyn Academy of Music to dining at one of the borough's nine Michelin-starred restaurants and grabbing drinks at Time Out Market to enjoying soaks, saunas, and spa treatments at cityWell or BATHHOUSE , there's no shortage of living the luxe life in New York City's most populous borough. Bon Voyage!

Elegant isn't usually a word that's used to describe a budget hotel, but Spain 's Park Hyatt Chennai isn't truly a budget hotel in the classic sense. Think of it more as affordable luxury, with a price tag that should delight you, as it did TPG senior writer Katie Genter when she stayed at this property, noting that "it feels amazing to be able to stay at a Park Hyatt for under $100 per night."

In addition to the low price, other perks of staying here include the prime location in the Little Mount neighborhood of Chennai, about 20 minutes from Chennai International Airport (MAA) and about halfway between the airport and the center of the city.

Dining is a big plus here, too, with three delicious options. The Flying Elephant is a three-story space that has cocktails, a DJ and an interactive kitchen that provides a show with dinner. Mr. Ong — The Flavours of Singapore offers hawker-style dishes from Malaysia and Singapore in a peaceful outdoor setting. The Dining Room is a cozy space with all-day dining and a dinner buffet.

The hotel's beautiful rooftop infinity pool overlooks Guindy National Park, as does the adjacent Sphere Fitness center gym, which offers sweeping views of the city. For more relaxation and pampering, book a facial or Indian head massage in one of the Antahpura Spa's six treatment rooms.

The 200 rooms and 20 suites are truly massive. The smallest room clocks in at 462 square feet, almost twice the size of traditional hotel rooms.

Rooms are appointed with bright pops of color from grass-green area rugs and green marble vanities in the bathrooms and are furnished with large desks, 50-inch TVs, minibars, Bonhomia espresso makers, minifridges that are stocked upon request and complimentary bottled water.

Rates start at $97 or 5,000 World of Hyatt points per room per night, based on double occupancy.

Hotel Casa 1800 Granada, Spain, is the kind of cozy, charming boutique hotel we all hope to find when we're traveling in Europe, but rarely do, and certainly not for less than $50 per night.

In the heart of Granada at the foot of the Alhambra in the 16th-century former Casa de los Migueletes, the hotel is close to some of the city's most iconic landmarks and within walking distance to museums, theaters and flamenco tablaos (dance venues) as well as the Granada Cathedral.

There are 25 rooms and suites, each with historic detailing and a unique layout. The most basic and least expensive accommodations are just 151 square feet. They have small windows but unique details such as beamed ceilings and intricate wall decor, and even bathtubs in the modern bathrooms.

All accommodations include air conditioning, Egyptian cotton sheets, bathrobe and slippers, free Wi-Fi and complimentary bottled water.

Add the breakfast buffet to your room for about $10 per person for a lavish morning spread of eggs made to order, bacon, Iberian ham, an assortment of cheeses, freshly baked pastries, cereals and fresh fruits.

One lovely amenity here is a complimentary afternoon snack. Every afternoon from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., a variety of cakes, sandwiches and hot and cold drinks are served on the open-air patio.

Rates start at $44 per room per night, based on double occupancy.

In fact, you could stay here in a plush room in a prime Strip location and never have to hear the jingle of a slot machine or the noise of the casino floor if you don't want to.

There's a lot to like about this hotel, starting with the rooms, which are all suites, the smallest of which — the studio suite — is 582 square feet. There's a whole category of "Stay Well" rooms that offer air purification, special water filters and non-toxic cleaning products.

Staying at the Vdara not only gives you access to the hotel's Pool & Lounge Vdara complex, which has a pool, bar and views of the Strip, but you can also use the pools at Aria. In addition, there are grab-and-go groceries, coffee and snacks at Market Cafe Vdara.

Explore the vibrant city of Kuala Lumpur from the elegant Ritz Carlton, Kuala Lumpur, one of our favorite cheap luxury hotels. Here, you'll find colonial-style interiors and a lushly landscaped infinity swimming pool surrounded by tropical gardens.

The price may not be astronomical, but the service here feels starry, especially the 24-hour butler service provided in the suites. Even the most basic of the 364 guest rooms (and they're still plenty large and plush at 431 square feet) come with luxurious marble bathrooms with rainfall showerheads and oversize soaking tubs.

There are several dining options on-site as well, including authentic Cantonese cuisine at Li Yen and light bites and cocktails at the relaxed The Library.

The Spa Village is the ideal spot to relax after a day of exploring the Malaysian capital. Some top options include a signature Sensory Sound Bath or a Chinese Peranakan treatment.

Shoppers take note: An air-conditioned walkway leads directly into Starhill Gallery for upscale shopping at stores such as Louis Vuitton. The hotel is also just around the corner from several other exclusive malls.

Rates start at $122 or 30,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per room per night, based on double occupancy.

How to Finesse a Luxury Vacation for a Lot Less

How to get a luxury travel vacation without going broke

cheap places to travel luxury

Luxury travel usually means spending a lot. But not always. Here are some proven outside-the-box ways to get upscale vacations for much less.

Choose Emerging over Established Destinations

Mukul Beach Golf & Spa

Don't Follow the Pack

It's very hard to economize in a super-expensive, traditional destination. So my advice is: to save money,  don't go there.

Think different. Go to a place that delivers a lot of what you love about your fantasy destination, but at real-life tabs. Here are some ideas.

Expensive French tropical island: French Polynesia in the South Pacific Cool compromise: St. Martin or Guadeloupe , French-speaking islands in the Caribbean

Budget-buster French city:  Paris, the City of Light -- and heavy spending Budget-stretch er French city: Quebec City, Canada's 400-year-old walled fortress town that feels and sounds more French than Paree

Trendy, pricey Latin American:  San Miguel de Allende, an artsy Colonial town in Mexico, with several luxury hotels Emerging and exciting Latino:  Nicaragua, with pristine beaches, volcanic beaches, lakes, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the new, five-star Mukul Beach, Golf & Spa Resort

Pricey Spanish-speaking pick: Barcelona, home of culinary and architectural innovation Amazing alternative: Buenos Aires , home of tango, polo, and parillada -grilled steak with Malbec wine

Stratospheric European country vacation: Tuscany, cradle of a thousand exquisite villas and best-selling memoirs Atmospheric alternative:  Istria in Croatia, called "the new Tuscany" for its Roman history, cozy villages, pasta and wine (and as a bonus: Adriatic beaches)

In a Posh Destination, Stay Outside the Tourist Center

MGallery Hotel Papadopoli Venice

Don't Roost in the Center of Town

OK, so you have your heart set on a Big Apple visit. Here, even a four-star hotel will cost several hundred dollars a night.

But in myriad vacation magnets like NYC, good hotels have proliferated outside the tourism hubs. If you're willing to spend a few minutes on a subway or bus, you can save a bundle on your hotel bills.

You won't be staying in a deluxe legend like The Pierre New York , but you might find a perfectly cute, cool design hotel. Some examples:

In New York, Z NYC Hotel is located in Long Island City, a newly gentrified neighborhood that is one subway stop from midtown, and the hotel offers a free shuttle service. Rooms are slick Art Deco black-and-white, all with Manhattan skyline views.

San Francisco: Oakland is attracting travelers who can't deal with SFO hotel rates. Waterfront Hotel  on Jack London Square delivers mesmerizing bay views, and there's a shuttle to the BART station.

Venice the wallet menace: Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square) is the high-ticket tourism and hotel hub of Venice. If you stay a half-hour stroll away in the authentic and residential Santa Croce district, you'll save around €200 per night at MGallery Hotel Papadopoli.

As Sweet as a Suite Is, Go for a Hotel's Basic Room

Omni Mount Washington Resort

You Won't Be in Your Room that Much, Right?

If you're planning a luxury hotel stay mainly to lounge and laze in your cushy room, then it won't really work for you to skimp on your room category.

But if you're planning to spend most of your vacation time outside your room, you can save big with a "run-of-house" basic room. And you'll still get the hotel's five-star service and plush beds.

But beware: make sure the room isn't a lemon: overlooking an airshaft or the parking lot, beside the elevator, above a noisy lounge. And be on the lookout for sneaky ways that hotels cut corners .

Stay in a Four-Star Hotel, But Upgrade to the Club Floor

The Dupont Circe Hotel

Always Go for the Club Level

Choosing a hotel that is less than super-luxury is an obvious way to lower your hotel bill.

There's a way to create a five-star experience in a four-star hotel. And that is by staying on the hotel's more upscale club floor.

You may be eligible for a club-floor upgrade if you're a points-accruing frequent guest of the hotel brand. But if you foot it yourself, a club-floor upgrade costs.

You will still be spending less than a luxury hotel room, but the club lounge and its privileges will furnish a five-star experience. See what you get with club-floor status, and whether a club-floor upgrade is worth it to you .

Travel Off-Season & Never on Holidays

Montreal Jazz Festival/Jean-François Leblanc.

High Season Means High Prices

Popular destinations tend to have high seasons with corresponding prices.

National holidays are always high season. You can celebrate holidays at non-holiday rates by leaving the country! I observe the Fourth of July by driving up to the Montreal Jazz Festival . Similarly, American Thanksgiving is just another Thursday in Canada

Family-friendly beach getaways are priciest when families can go: school holidays and breaks.b You're just not going to get a good deal then in South Florida, the Caribbean, and coastal Mexico

Flying at less popular times has its benefits, too. Fares are lower off-holiday and out of season.nIf you're using airline mileage, you will find far fewer blackout dates during off-season and non-holiday

Upshot: To save bucks, work around busy dates. Some times to avoid: the high-season slam in seasonal destinations (Long Island's The Hamptons in summer, Vail and Aspen in winter). Famous events that create top-dollar rates: New Orleans during Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest in spring; Saratoga, New York during the summer Thoroughbred racing meet:  Santa Fe  during Indian Market in August; Park City, Utah during Sundance in January.

Vacationing midweek is cheaper in resort and getaway destinations. Airfares are lowest midweek...but midweek hotel rates are not cheap in cities that host business travelers. And of course, if you can't get vacation days midweek, you have to factor in lost income.

Go All-Inclusive

Zoetry Riviera Maya

Pay Once for Everything, and Then Indulge

All-inclusive hotels and resorts have been gaining in popularity. In a nutshell, they're easy.  They include food, drinks, and tips, a significant savings if you tend to splurge on these.  See the pros and cons of  all-inclusive plans .

Today's all-inclusives are upscale and elegant. May I present as evidence: In Cancun,  Le Blanc Spa Resort   and  Live Aqua ; on Mexico's Riviera Maya: Zoetry Paraiso Bonita ; n St. Maarten in the Caribbean: Sonesta Great Bay; and in the Adirondacks of upstate New York: The Point  (possibly the world's most deluxe all-inclusive).

All-inclusive trend: Because luxury travelers like all-inclusive pricing, more and more a la carte luxury hotels are now offering all-inclusive options as well. Mexico's dazzling new design hotel offers an AI plan. Hola, NIZUC  Resort on a semi-private island off Cancun,

Opt for a Package that Includes Airfare

Get Your Flight Along with Your Room

You can often get a great deal by buying a hotel + airfare deal. These work especially well for last-minute planner.

Vacation packagers like Liberty Travel, Apple Vacations, and others offer these deals (Airlines including United and American offer all-in-one vacations, too -- including airfare, natch). Online "bucket shops" like Priceline , Expedia , Kayak ,  CheapoAir , LastMinuteTravel , Cheapcaribbean ,  Sherman's Travel , and many more offer deals -- and comparisons with other sites. "Flash sites" like Jetsetter and Tablet Hotels  offer ever-changing deals that you can grab.

Already have your flights? the ingenious  Roomer  site sells cancelled luxury hotel room reservations for up to 60% off

Rent an Apartment or Villa Instead of Paying Hotel Bills

Sometimes, it takes a villa.

To save hotel bills...don't stay in a hotel. Rent a room, an apartment, or a villa. Here's how to find a cheap vacation rental, from a room to a villa.

For a city apartment,  airbnb  and similar services do the job. But...caveat emptor. You'll be able to see the place online in (flattering) photos, but you'll have to research the location yourself. Make sure it's safe; not an hour-long bus-and-subway ride to the town center; and not overlooking a highway, train tracks, or recycling plant. Tip: Use Google Earth (or mobile Google Maps) to see the address in a neighborhood context.

For a resort area, a villa rental may be a better deal than a hotel. A villa makes sense for families or groups of friends. But a villa will provide more space and privacy but less service, and it's unlikely to be as conveniently located as a hotel. See all the ways that villas stack up against hotels .

Do a Luxury Home Exchange

Love Home Swap

"Trading Places" for Vacation

Home exchanges, also called house swaps, are a global phenomenon. They exist at all levels -- including luxury home exchanges.

The fee is low or nonexistent, but the membership bar is high: to be swap-worthy, your own home must be deluxe. The process is safe, and home-exchange partners are typically very satisfied customers. Find out the whos, whats, wheres, whys, and hows of home exchanges. And see some great places from these trusted home-exchange players: HomeChicHome.fr and LoveHomeSwap.com .

Going...Going...Gone!

Isn't the Internet wonderful? You can learn all there is to know about a destination or a hotel (such as right here at About).

And then you can bid, auction-style, on a vacation. The gold standard of upscale vacation auction sites:  Luxury Link .

Get Insider Deals by Using a Travel Agent

Tom Kelley Archive / Getty Images

Really, a Travel agent? Uh-huh.

I know what you're thinking: "Travel agents? How pre-Internet." Yes, the Web has made it easy for travelers to research vacations themselves. But it's also true that travel agents, who are professionals and insiders, have better contacts and better access to deals.

And it costs nothing to use a travel agent; their commission is paid by the hotel, tour company, etc. (A super-high-end travel agent, such as from the elite Virtuoso network , may charge a fee, but you'll get a ton of perks like upgrades and freebies.)

Take a Cruise!

Check out a floating hotel (a/k/ a cruise ship).

Cruises are generally cheaper than hotel vacations. And you'll see so much more, because every day you sail into a different port. No wonder cruise vacationers are so passionate about their favored mode of travel. (These days, river cruises are hot, especially with people who don't normally like cruises.)

Why? Cruises are generally all-inclusive save for liquor. The US's most popular cruise embarkation port, Fort Lauderdale, is typically inexpensive to fly to. Larger ships like the glamorous Regal Princess have the best deals, because there are so many cabins to fill. Last-minute cruise deals are often the best. A good place to find cruise offers: CruiseCompete .

Luxury Travel on a Budget: 32 Tips You Need to Know

Janice Waugh

May 30, 2017 by Janice Waugh

luxury travel on a budget

Who doesn't like a bit of luxury on their travels now and then?

Luxury can be about the destination but, more typically, it's about how you experience the destination, whether it be a city or town, in the mountains or by the ocean.

While luxury can cost a lot of money, there are some tricks to getting luxury travel on a budget.

We did some research on affordable luxury. We went to members of the Solo Travel Society on Facebook for their top tips. I also put a call out to the public relations community and received recommendations from them as well. I've pared down the deluge that came in to the 32 Tips I think you need to know.

Here they are.

Musician on High Line (and yes, I contributed to his hat).

Table of Contents

Plan Your Itinerary for Luxury Travel on a Budget

It's worthwhile spending some time thinking about your entire year of travel. When you think of all the trips you want to take and the days in which you can take them, you can plan better, save money, and therefore get more luxury for your travel budget.

  • Determine a reasonable daily budget including accommodation, food, etc.
  • Multiply that figure by the number of days you'll travel.
  • Add the cost of your flight.
  • Divide the total by the number of days you'll be traveling.

The longer you travel the less your flight contributes to your daily cost. Say your budget for accommodation, food, etc., is $175 per day and your flight is $900. On a per day basis, a 4-day getaway (to Paris from New York, for example) would be $400/day or $1,600. On a per day basis, a 2-week trip would be $239/day or $3,350. In this scenario, a 4-day trip costs almost half the price of a 14-day trip.

  • Choose a cheap 5-star destination . When looking for a 5-star retreat think about the country first. You want a country where your currency buys a lot. Then find the luxury experience within it. From North America consider Central America. From the UK think Greece and Portugal. From Australia you have much of Southeast Asia within a reasonable long-haul flight.
  • Go less central and less touristy . If you stay out of the center of things and off the beaten track, you are more likely to get more for less. Research from Trivago suggests that staying within 1 km of Seattle city center could cost you $100/night more than outside that 1 km circumference. Plus, staying outside the city center can get you into interesting neighborhoods so that you get a real feel for the city.
  • Think Eastern Europe rather than Western Europe . If Europe is your destination, the east is definitely cheaper than the west. Think about Budapest, Hungary; Prague, Czech Republic; or Krakow, Poland. Consider countries like Slovenia, Croatia, or Romania.
  • Travel the perimeter of Western Europe rather than the center . Cities that are farther out from the center tend to be less expensive. Think Porto, Portugal; Valetta, Malta; or Athens, Greece. The same does not apply to northern Europe which is quite expensive.
  • Choose the destination that has cheaper flights . Charles Thompson of the Solo Travel Society gave us this hot tip for Melbournians: Melbourne has one of the largest populations of Greeks outside Athens so flights to Athens are a tad cheaper. You can apply this idea in many places. Look for large immigrant populations near your home airport and you'll likely discover where flights are less expensive for the distance. A quick check on flights to Delhi from Toronto shows that the cost is only a few hundred more than flights to Europe. But think how much less expensive luxury is in India than Europe.
  • Use Skyscanner's “Everywhere” button . To give you an idea of relatively cheap flight destinations, plug in your home airport and “everywhere” as your destination into Skyscanner's search engine. You'll get all sorts of destinations presented to you in order of least to most expensive. But always check FlightNetwork and the recommended airline's site for the best deal before purchasing.
  • Check out the Solo Traveler Deals Page . On this page we list companies that offer tours and cruises with no or very low single supplements  for solo travelers.  You can also sign up for the Solo Traveler Advisory to receive new deals via email every month.

This post was inspired by Leigh, a reader who used the Everywhere button to learn that Panama City was in her budget and then our Destinations section to decide whether she wanted to go there by reading Solo Travel Destination: Panama City, Panama, a post submitted by Emily, a reader from the United States. It’s fantastic how the resources fit together.

When to Find Luxury Travel on a Budget

  • Watch for the deals in your inbox. Sign up to receive newsletters and deals from your favorite, luxury travel companies and you'll be among the first to learn about special sales.
  • Judi & Janet from the Solo Travel Society (and many more) say: Travel in the off season . Avoid the crowds. The locals are also more relaxed and friendly. Just watch out for gotchas like rainy season at the beach. Read:  How to Save on Shoulder Season Travel: Top Tips .
  • Margaret from the Solo Travel Society says: Visit places like museums late in the day . “I love museums and galleries. I try to go later in the day as they often sell discounted tickets near closing.”
  • Anna and Wendy of the Solo Travel Society say: Book last-minute deals. Book early or at the last minute. At the last minute you can find empty spaces on tours so that discounts are often found there.

No hardship staying in this exchange home.

Luxury Accommodation on a Budget

  • Plan for a variety of accommodation styles . On a trip of more than a week I always plan for some budget accommodation, some mid-range, and some luxury. Truly, there are advantages to budget accommodation and by saving on a few nights in a cheaper hotel I can come in on budget even when I include a few nights at a more expensive one.
  • Stay at a boutique hotel . Smaller hotels with fewer amenities than the chain hotels with restaurants, bars, and pools may well offer more luxury for less money. There is no international standard for the hotel star system so you can't really count on it to tell you how luxurious a hotel is. A hotel with a pool but frayed around the corners may rank higher than an immaculate boutique hotel without a pool. Read reviews to really get a sense of what you're booking.
  • Check directly with the hotel . I use Booking.com for 95% of my bookings because I don't pay Booking.com, I pay at the hotel, and there is usually free cancellation up to two days before check in. Still, I often check with the hotel directly to see if they have a better rate or are willing to offer an upgrade for the rate I have.
  • Debbie of the Solo Travel Society says: Use the Hotel Tonight app . “Hotels put extra inventory on this service for day-of sales.”
  • B&B's now have luxury options . At one time B&Bs were pretty basic. You'd get a room in a person's home. That's no longer the case. Many could really be classified as inns. Check out the Bed & Breakfasts site for B&Bs from all over the world.
  • Try a home exchange. This can save you big time on accommodation and let you live like a local.   You give up your home and you take over someone else's . With the Home Exchange  website it doesn't have to be a straight swap. You can take a home in Seattle while someone from Japan stays in yours. Home Exchange has 65,000+ worldwide listings. Read Free accommodation: try a home exchange
  • Glamping options . Luxurious camping is not an oxymoron. Go to Glamping.com to find glamorous camping opportunities around the world.
  • Airbnb is well known for booking apartments, homes or rooms.
  • VRBP for booking a holiday home.
  • Join the club and/or have the card. Hotels like the Fairmont have free clubs you can sign up for to get you free WiFi – a benefit that one gets free at a hostel but, oddly, not at all luxury hotels. Always look for the special offers at the hotel you're booking.
  • Use the Solo Traveler Accommodation Guide . Each listing in the guide is a recommendation from other solo travelers. Check it out for some great deals.

half price theatre tickets luxury travel on a budget

Save Money on Things to Do

  • Step up to the bar . You don't have to stay at an uber-luxury hotel to enjoy some of the benefits. You can go to the bar for a drink, enjoy afternoon tea, or book yourself into their spa.
  • Find the half-price ticket booths for theater . The prices are not always half-price but by buying tickets on the day of the performance at a half-price booth you can save lots. Read Affordable New York  and Affordable London to find where the booths are in those cities.
  • Experience that exclusive restaurant after hours . April Masini of askapril.com says “High end restaurants that are hard to get into, let alone afford, will be happy to serve you desert and a cappuccino after regular dinner hours. You’ll get the table, the luxury experience, the cuisine and the budget prices by skipping the meal.” Team that up with a night at the theater and you have a real luxury experience.
  • Take your main meal at special restaurants . Likewise, it's also recommended to splurge on dining at noon hour when the prices are lower but the executive chef and kitchen are the same.
  • Luxury car rentals for less.  According to RentalCarReviews , Silvercar , an all-Audi car rental company, offers great luxury that doesn't cost a great deal. “There isn't a single location where the regular price from Silvercar for their premium Audi A4 is higher than a regular Full Size from the other companies. In a number of cases, Silvercar is less than half the price of either Hertz or Avis.”
  • How about a limo for less? Blacklane  offers black car service in 50 countries at a fraction of the cost of traditional limousine service, with as little as an hour's notice required. The reviews I read say that it's more expensive than a taxi but it's definitely worth the service when compared to limo rates.
  • America – City Pass will give you up to 50% off admission to major attractions in most of America’s top cities.
  • The London Pass
  • The Paris Pass
  • The Berlin Pass
  • The Dublin Pass
  • The Rome & Vatican Pass
  • Mary of the Solo Travel Society says: Watch for discount sites like Groupon or GrabOne.  You can choose your destination and search for deals. Here's a link to Groupon Canada. For US Groupon sites you can start here and from there choose your specific city to find deals. GrabOne serves New Zealand, Ireland, and Northern Ireland.

Premium Economy Class is an option if you don't find a deal on Business Class.

Negotiate a Great Travel Deal

  • Erick of the Solo Travel Society says: Do your own research.  “Avoid travel agencies. It will take hours in front of your computer but it will be worth it.”
  • Ashmani of the Solo Travel Society says: Book months in advance . “Communicating directly with the hotels, back and forth, till a satisfactory deal is struck is worth the effort.”

Prices for 5-star hotels

Average prices are based on searches conducted across KAYAK portfolio domains from 01 September 2022 – 31 August 2023 for the travel period 01 January 2023 – 31 December 2023.

The overall “Average price” is calculated by taking into account all one-night stays within a given time range, i.e. considering both weekend and weekday stays.

All prices displayed are average prices per night for a 5-star double room.

Please note that these prices may vary and cannot be guaranteed.

Best value travel month for a 5-star hotel stay

Average prices per night per travel month are based on searches conducted across KAYAK portfolio domains from 01 September 2021 – 31 August 2023 for the travel period 01 January 2022 – 31 December 2023.

Best time to book a 5-star hotel

Best time to book insights are estimated from our internal historical search data across KAYAK portfolio domains. Search data from the past year is aggregated for each day difference between date of check-in and search date from 0 to 120 days (about 4 months ahead is the earliest we consider), taking the median of 5-star hotel prices. The minimum prices and corresponding day difference are identified to approximate the best times to book hotels for the specific destination city. We do not generate estimates for destination cities with fewer than 50 data points per day differences.

When the best time to book falls within 0 to 14 days, it is labeled as “Last-minute deals”.

Average hotel ratings of 5-star hotels

The average rating of 5-star hotels in a given city is calculated from reviews of 5-star hotels collected over the period of the past 2 years from data pulled on 10 January 2024. The reviews come from KAYAK and partner websites (Agoda, Booking.com, Guestsuite, Hotelscombined and Priceline).

Luxury – as recommended by guests like you.

These are 5-star hotels with an average nightly rate of under $300, based on searches conducted between 01 October 2022 – 30 June 2023. The ten highest-rated hotels in each country and globally that each have a minimum of 80 reviews are displayed. If these criteria are not fulfilled, fewer hotels are presented.

Lowest-priced and highest-priced destinations for 5-star hotels

The lowest-priced and highest-priced destination rankings for the current and coming month are sourced from our internal search data on KAYAK portfolio domains from the past 180 days, with updates made on the 1st of each month. To provide an accurate estimate of nightly rates for standard double rooms at 5-star hotels, we display the average price, excluding outliers, specifically the top 1% and bottom 1% of prices. Cities are ranked both globally and regionally and also show the percentage change in price compared to the two previous months.

And while we all dream of traveling to far-flung destinations, flying in Business (or First ) Class and staying at ultraluxe hotels , nobody likes to break their wallet on a holiday. Here are the top 10 travel tips & tricks that I use to optimize my own travel expenses.

Feel free to share your own travel tips & tricks, and leave a comment .

SONEVA JANI, MALDIVES

1. FIND THE CHEAPEST HOTEL RATE ON TRIVAGO OR HOTELSCOMBINED

When I want to stay at a particular luxury hotel, I always start with an online search for the cheapest room rate at that hotel. This may sound like mission impossible given the number of search engines that are available on the internet these days, but it is not difficult at all since two aggregator websites will do the job for you in just a few clicks!  Trivago  and  Hotelscombined are two very helpful websites that check at once the price of a hotel room at hundreds of other sites (e.g. Ebookers, Booking.com, Otel.com, Hotels.com, Expedia, Hotelopia, etc …) and then show you where you can book the cheapest rate. Try it out for yourself here (and find out how easy it is):

Compare. Book. Save. With HotelsCombined.com

Once I found the cheapest rate for a hotel room on Trivago or Hotelscombined, my strategy to book that rate depends on the hotel type:

  • If the hotel does not belong to a large hotel chain, I book the room via Hotels.com using a  Best Rate Guarantee ; this not only enables me to book that room at the cheapest rate (found on Trivago or Hotelscombined), but in addition, I collect free hotel nights via Hotels.com’s excellent Rewards program (read  here why I like Hotels.com so much).
  • If the hotel is part of a large hotel chain (e.g. Hilton, Marriott, InterContinental, Hyatt, etc …), I make the booking directly on the official hotel website using a Best Rate Guarantee program; this will get me an additional 10-25% discount and enables me to collect  loyalty points  that I can redeem for free hotel nights.
  • If the hotel offers complimentary Virtuoso perks (cf below), then I calculate how much I would save by booking via Virtuoso (which rarely offers the cheapest rate) compared to Hotels.com or the official hotel website (which rarely comes with extra perks). If the difference is substantial, then Virtuoso is always my first choice for a hotel booking. Fyi, booking via Virtuoso will also get you hotel points within your preferred hotel loyalty program.

2. GET UPGRADES AND OTHER VIP PERKS WHEN BOOKING VIA VIRTUOSO

Booking luxury hotels via  Virtuoso is an extremely rewarding travel tip, not so much in terms of saving money on the room rate, but rather in terms of free perks that you will receive at the property itself (e.g. upgrades, dinners, spa treatments, etc …). Virtuoso is the industry’s leading network of luxury travel advisors, spanning over 26 countries and 9,000 travel advisors. So when you book your holiday with Virtuoso, most of the time, you will be in touch with a Virtuoso travel agent and not make the booking online yourself. Virtuoso travel agents network with the world’s most luxurious hotels & resorts, most of them belonging to the portfolio of the world’s most exclusive hotel brands . The single best reason to book a stay through a Virtuoso travel agent is that it means value for money as it will get you access to the above mentioned special VIP perks (and will potentially save you hundreds of dollars).

The advantage of booking through Virtuoso is particularly evident when staying at an Aman property, the world’s top hotel chain. In line with Aman’s hyper-exclusive and ultra-luxurious reputation, you’ll never find a lower rate than the one published on the official  Aman website. But booking through a Virtuoso travel agent rather than on the Aman website itself will get you some free extra perks (often worth hundreds of dollars). So if you are an Aman junkie, like me, then Virtuoso is the way to go (otherwise you are leaving money on the table).

My favorite Virtuoso travel agency is  Classic Travel , not only because of their excellent service, but also because they are one of the few Virtuoso travel agencies that offer an excellent online booking tool (click the banner below to try it out for yourself).

3. FIND THE CHEAPEST FLIGHTS WITH GOOGLE

I mostly use the airfare search engine Kayak  when planning my air travel. Kayak checks the price of your requested flight at tons of sites at once, including  Orbitz   and  Cheaptickets , and allows flexibility in your travel dates. However, Kayak does not display all prices, so that is why I also check other online ticket-sellers as well (e.g. Travelocity ,  Hipmunk ,  Momondo ,  Hotwire ,  Skyscanner , and  Expedia ). Another tool that has also helped me tremendously in finding the cheapest ticket is Google Flights . It’s a very simple tool: you just enter your travel dates and destination (city or country), hit ‘explore destinations’ and Google shows you a map where you can travel for the lowest price.

4. FOLLOW FAMOUS TRAVEL BLOGGERS

Many airlines and hotels have their own loyalty programs that allow you to earn points or miles that are redeemable for free flights, upgrades, hotel stays, car rentals or shopping. Everybody should participate in these programs as they can save you tons of money by travelling (almost for) free as well as offer you tons of other perks. However, it does take quite some effort to get some basic knowledge of how to collect miles & points in the most efficient manner. One of the best travel tips is to subscribe to the newsletters of expert bloggers, so that you will be instantly updated on promotions and tricks for earning or spending your miles or hotel points. I hereby list my 6 favorite travel bloggers, who have helped me to save considerably on my own travel budget:

  • One mile at a time (my favorite blog)
  • The Points Guy
  • Million Mile Secret
  • Loyalty Lobby
  • View from the Wing
  • Head for Points

That said, my own travel blog (now seven years old) also aims to be a valuable resource with tips & tricks that help you save money when traveling in style. In my hotel reviews , I always write a section about ‘how to save money’, which explains the best strategy to book that particular hotel. In addition, each Friday, I publish a newsletter with interesting up-to-date travel tips.

5. KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR SALES BY AIRLINES (ESPECIALLY QATAR AIRWAYS)

Most airlines occasionally run sales, offering flight tickets at a discounted rate. If you add yourself to their mailing lists, you will be notified among the first when they have a sale. For example, British Airways often has sales where they allow you to book a Business Class return trip and fly one leg in First Class. Swiss regularly launches sales with First Class fares that are cheaper than flying Business Class. But the winner here is Qatar Airways , which often launches incredible 2-for-1 sales where your companion will travel for free when you buy one Business Class ticket. For example, a few weeks ago, Qatar Airways had a sale with Business Class fares from Europe and the USA to the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Oceania from as low as an incredible 1000 euros or 850 USD per person. Although that sale has ended now, they will launch some new ones in the future.

6. EARN MILES BY CREDIT CARD

I guess most of you are familiar with the concept of airline miles, but for those who aren’t: frequent-flyer programs are customer loyalty programs used by airlines that allow you to earn points (or miles) that are redeemable for free flights. Around 50% of my miles are not earned by flying, but by using my credit card, which earns me 1.5 miles for every dollar spent. I don’t spend more money since I have this credit card, but I ‘learned’ to use my credit card for all my daily expenses (grocery, gas, shopping, etc …) instead of paying in cash. In the US, and to a lesser extent the UK, credit cards are great for earning lots of miles (signing up for a credit card can come with huge mileage bonus offers, often enough for a transatlantic Business Class ticket). If you are not a resident of the USA or UK, a good strategy may be to acquire an American Express credit card, which is available in most countries (albeit often at a heavy fee) and allows you to convert Amex points in airline miles.

7. UPGRADE USING YOUR MILES

You may not have enough miles for a Business Class flight, but if you book in the class below your preferred seat, you may be able to upgrade your ticket using your air miles or points. British Airways is one of the airlines with the best frequent flyer program when it comes to using your miles for an upgrade (I have reviewed British Airways Business and First Class flights on a number of occasions  here ). Using British Airways miles – called Avios – to upgrade one class (from Economy to Premium Economy, from Premium Economy to Business, or from Business to First) is one of the best ways to spend them. It usually requires around 25,000 Avios to upgrade a cash booking to the next cabin on a longhaul flight (when there’s availability of course). Avios can be used for an upgrade on British Airways, Iberia and American Airlines flights.

For example, if you want to fly with British Airways in Business Class from London to New York, you can book a Premium Economy ticket, and then login to “Manage My Booking” on BA.com , select your flight and choose to ”Upgrade this flight with Avios”. If there is reward availability, British Airways will tell you how much it will cost. In this example, an off-peak reward flight in World Traveller Plus costs 26,000 Avios; an off-peak reward flight in Club World costs 50,000 Avios. Therefore the cost to upgrade this flight using Avios is 50,000-26,000 = 24,000 Avios. If you booked your ticket through a travel agent, you will need to check with them to see if your booking can be upgraded with Avios. Alternatively, if you are ready to book and do not yet have any tickets for your trip, you can use the  BA.com  ‘book and upgrade’ form to search for availability and get a price for booking and upgrading at the same time.

Even if you don’t have enough miles for an upgrade, don’t despair. If you are running low, consider converting your hotel points over to airline miles to boost your balance. Many airlines also offer a part-buy miles-flight option where you can pay to buy in the miles that you need as you book your redemption ticket.

8. TRAVEL TO EMERGING DESTINATIONS

The most popular travel destinations are popular – and expensive – for good reason. Think Maldives  or  Seychelles , and you know that the superlative scenery will cost you at least a $1000 USD per night in high season (and that’s not even for a room in a top hotel). But some of us are looking for more profound and authentic experiences that these off-the-shelf tourist attractions just can’t offer – experiences that also allow to save big on travel. Only few countries fit that profile and they are on my radar to visit in the near future, before the crowds – and with that a rise of room rates – arrive: Mongolia, Georgia, Montenegro, the Cook Islands, Uzbekistan and Paraguy all seem terrific travel destinations for 2022, where one can still travel cheap without compromising too much on luxury. And if you need some more travel inspiration and tips, you can also check the Lonely Planet’s passion-packed list of 2022’s must-see destinations , places, and immeasurable experiences.

9. BOOK NEWLY OPENED HOTELS

Booking newly opened hotels is one of the money saving travel tricks that I have been using for years with success. I always try to stay at luxury hotels that just opened to make use of often insane opening offers, launched to lure guest. For instance, Soneva Jani in the Maldives (opened in 2016) and Six Senses Bhutan (opened in 2019) offered their guests discounts of more than 50% (including many extras) in the first weeks after they opened. Some hotels will even allow you to negotiate your own rate (that happened to me when I stayed at Como Maalifushi in the Maldives and Raflles Seychelles ). For that reason, you may want to read my lists of the hottest new hotels 2021 and 2022, and check whether one of the featured hotels is located along one of your future travel itineraries. Especially in Asia, there seems to be a boom in luxury hotels (e.g. Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand).

10. DON’T BE OBSESSED BY TRAVEL & LOYALTY

I admit that I used to be obsessed by loyalty programs in the past. I would book hotels and do mileage runs, with the simple goal of acquiring as much hotel points and airline miles as possible. Granted, this strategy has offered me plenty of awesome experiences, such as flying First Class with many of the world’s best airlines. However, over the years, I came to realize that loyalty has become less rewarding (with many hotel and airline programs introducing massive devaluations) and that loyalty was determining my travel plans and not the other way around. That is why I left my obsession for loyalty programs behind me. By doing so, I noticed that I reduced my levels of travel-related stress (yes, loyalty can cause stress by making you want to maintain your elite status) and that I introduced more variety in my travels by exploring new destinations, airlines and hotels. In fact, I am considering abandoning all my loyalty programs and just take a more relaxed approach when it comes to travel, especially since there are so many good travel deals out there these days that loyalty doesn’t seem to make much sense anymore.

Enjoy the weekend and stay tuned for Monday when I reveal a new  top 10 travel list .

How do you book newly opening hotels? When I go to Marriott’s site, for example, it says certain properties are opening on a specific date, but there is no option to book via their website.

In addition to the flight booking websites like Kayak, Google Flights, and Skyscanner, I have found Hopper is a helpful app to track flight pricing and give advice about when would be a good time to make a purchase. Thank you for your thorough advice.

Book Cape Panwa Hotel

Cape Panwa Hotel is one of Phuket island's most sought-after hotels by travelers, and luckily for vaccinated guests, they can now arrive quarantine-free to Thai paradise.

This five-star stunner is perched on the slopes of a former coconut grove that peers over the Andaman Sea and features sophisticated, luxury suite-style guest rooms and pool villas. Discerning travelers pick this property for its privacy and feeling of seclusion, which is hard to come by on tourist-strewn Phuket. For the ultimate in intimacy, book the beachside dinner for two lit up under a white tent with a whimsical hanging floral display.

Due to its steep position, a funicular moves guests up and down the property and makes for a memorable activity with intoxicating views. Another highlight is the Sino-Portuguese mansion , which emerges from plush vegetation and has been used as a filming location, but today operates as a Thai restaurant.

Rooms have casual, unpretentious Thai elegance filled with dark woods, earthy tones, and jute rugs and the hotel's private, shallow beach is popular among families. A sparkling blue pool with comfy loungers protected by canopies rounds out the reasons why you should start searching for airfare, which as of press time, was just $675 in economy on Etihad Airways leaving from JFK.

Book The Hermitage Hotel

The Hermitage Hotel in Nashville is a little slice of history. There are 122 spacious guest rooms adorned in traditional decor featuring hand-made, custom furniture imported from Europe. The building dates back 110 years and is located a block from the state's capital, and also served as a home base to both pro and anti-suffrage groups leading to the vote on the 19th amendment that passed in 1920. To honor its role in the landmark vote, the hotel now showcases its private collection of historic artifacts.

The Hermitage also stands out for its spectacular Oak Bar with an impressive fine wine list and premium, hand-crafted cocktails that also pay homage to Nashville's most prominent Suffrage leaders.

Book Cape Fahn Hotel, Koh Samui

Villas ranging in size and in view — including bay, ocean and hilltop views — are set at Cape Fahn amongst lush, tropical jungle and foliage.

One of the resort's most exclusive rooms is in fact its own private island and comes complete with a dedicated pool, two bedrooms, a large living space, and a spa-like bathroom with a soaking tub.

Unique, contemporary decor in soothing tones is par for the course in all of the villas, though, with dangling white linen curtains, wood paneling, floor-to-ceiling windows, and accordion doors that make use of the expansive, crystal blue water Choeng Mon Beach views.

This quarantine-free resort, located on the popular and recently reopened Koh Samui island, is bound to be less busy than the previously opened and more popular Phuket, which means you can enjoy the large outdoor swimming pools (including a saltwater pool) almost to yourself. There's also a sun terrace and a reading room, exclusive only to hotel guests.

Cape Fahn visitors relish active pursuits like yoga, kayaking, snorkeling, stand-up paddle boarding, Thai boxing, and lower impact activities like cooking lessons, movies lit by the moonlight, and even the chance to charter a luxury yacht.

Book Castelfalfi

Take in the views of Tuscany from this hilltop luxury estate , which has been developed entirely around a small, medieval Italian village and its surrounding countryside.

Whether you stay in the hotel, housed partly in what was once a tobacco warehouse, or in one of the many stately villas or apartments, you'll be treated to sweeping views of vineyards, olive groves, a lake, and a crop field.

There is a wellness center and spa, plus a stunning pool and bar which bask in the bucolic views as well. The resort is also home to Tuscany's largest championship golf course, split into a 9-hole lakeside course and an 18-hole mountain course for golfers interested in a challenge.

In addition to ample outdoor offerings, Toscana Resort Castelfalfi is spoiled with four distinct restaurants. One of my all-time favorite dining experiences took place here at La Rocca , an elegant-yet-unfussy restaurant inside a beautifully restored medieval castle. The restaurant excels at serving an impressive feast for the senses, culinary-minded individuals, and for those who appreciate immaculate service.

Book Hotel Lutetia

Opened in 1910, this historic hotel is famous for being the only luxury "palace" hotel on the city's Left Bank. It was once haunted by an array of famous artists like Pablo Picasso, Henry Matisse, Josephine Baker, and James Joyce, the latter of whom is said to have written part of "Ulysses" there during his stay.

In the summer of 2018, it re-opened following a four-year, $234 million restoration and it's now one of the most exquisite luxury hotels in all of Paris.

While it's equipped with every modern comfort, the building's unique blend of art nouveau and art deco styles will surely transport you to turn-of-the-century France.

There are no less than five fine dining venues, and wellness enthusiasts can book a treatment, steam, or dip in Akasha Spa.

The hotel is also known for its magnificent penthouse suites, which offer the kind of 360 rooftop views over Paris that you usually only see in movies.

To find cheap hotel deals, start by checking the rewards offerings of your credit cards and other memberships. Many credit card companies offer incentives to their customers, including exclusive deals, promotions, and room upgrades.

American Express's Platinum Card offers members a $200 Hotel Credit in the form of an annual statement credit, for prepaid bookings at Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection properties made within American Express Travel .

You should also examine deals from less obvious service providers. For example, most T-Mobile plans come with access to T-Mobile TRAVEL , meaning you can save up to 40% on Booking.com stays and 40% off Priceline rental cars when booking through the site.

Another great way to find cheap hotel deals is to comparison shop using search engines and booking platforms like KAYAK , Travelocity , Trivago , and Priceline . Compare and contrast the posted rates between the platforms, and the hotel's direct site, to find the best deal and remember to always make sure you are checking the room types being offered before the time of booking so that the deal is a good fit for you and your needs.

Aside from the tips above, one of the best ways to find luxury hotel deals can be to simply open a new browser tab.

Google the names of some of the luxe properties on your wishlist and then click Google's "Check Availability" button to see the hotel's future availability and rates in a calendar view to see the cheapest dates. While this rate information is not available for all properties, you'll be able to see upcoming rates for blocks of dates for most places and plan a trip around the lowest rates available. It's also a great tool for comparing rates of similar hotels in the same destination.

Checking a hotel's website is another great way to learn about packages and discounts. Though they generally have blackout dates, it's a good option for flexible travelers.

Many hotels offer a free night if you book 3 nights or more, and some offer additional free nights, especially if you're booking during off-peak times.

A travel agent may also help alert you to the latest deals and promotions at a hotel, as they often track that information for their clients.

What's the best place to find last minute luxury hotel deals?

Last minute inventory is a key reason you might find a cheap deal on a luxury hotel. As hotels assess inventory closer to a specific date, they're able to offer more competitive prices based on a lack of demand.

Hotels.com offers an easy-to-use search engine dedicated to hotel deals , while apps like Hotel Tonight let you see last minute hotel deals based on your location, letting you compare top hotels by rates, neighborhood, and your non-negotiables (hello, hot tub).

Meanwhile, websites like Roomer Travel will allow you to buy reservations directly from individuals who can no longer use them, meaning you can save big if your dates and preferred luxury hotels align.

There are many factors to consider when planning a vacation, from finding cheap places to travel and the safety of your intended destination to hotel options . But like it or not, there’s one thing that influences our travel decisions more than anything else: money. All those resort fees, plane tickets , and life-changing meals add up pretty quickly—so at the end of the day, we really want to prioritize places where our greenbacks have the most spending power.

We did a little digging to find the countries where the U.S. dollar goes the furthest, based on current exchange rates. And while our fickle global economy means those rates can change at any time, certain places have consistently offered more bang for our buck over the years—and, fingers crossed, they should stay that way well into 2024 .

Without further ado, here are 21 of the best cheap places to travel around the world.

Budapest Hungary

Budapest, Hungary

1 USD = 351.21 HUF

Hungary’s favorable economy is great news for anyone planning a trip to Budapest , where a growing scene of Michelin-starred restaurants and high-tech spas are calling to us from across the globe. The city just celebrated its 150th anniversary in November 2023, which means there are even more reasons to visit during the next calendar year, including the newly reopened Chain Bridge and the brand-new House of Music Hungary . Be sure to book a room at the art deco W Budapest —formerly a palace and on a UNESCO World Heritage-listed street—which opened in July 2023 opposite the Hungarian State Opera.

South Korea

1 USD = 1,301.45 KRW

While other travelers head to the popular tourist destinations of Seoul , Busan, and Jeju Island, we have our eyes set on another South Korean city:  Mokpo , located in the Jeolla region at the southern tip of the peninsula. The port city offers some of the most interesting dining in the country, and specialty dishes like  hongeo (a naturally fermented, extremely pungent skate-fish dish) attract food lovers from around the world.

1 USD = 17.22 MXN

Mexico is consistently one of our favorite places to travel on a budget. In Mexico City , with a street food culture rivaled only by its forward-looking restaurant scene, you’ll be spending most of your money on eats. But make sure to leave some bucks to visit all the cultural wonders the city has to offer, starting with the iconic Museo Jumex . If you’re looking to go a little farther afield, head to Jalisco to see tequila being made at the source, or Isla Holbox for a sleepy beach scene.

An eagle hunter riding near the Altai Mountains in Mongolia.

An eagle hunter riding near the Altai Mountains in Mongolia.

1 USD = 3,449.69 MNT

We’ve long been fans of Mongolia for its seemingly limitless expanses and adventure camps—and the fact that travel here costs as little as $75 per day (including accommodations). The country is on a mission to lure even more travelers into its borders in 2024, with upcoming initiatives like its first-ever direct US flight and visa-free travel for dozens of nationalities. You can also expect even more offbeat cultural experiences next year: Local operator Breanna Wilson is expanding her 2024 tours to include a digital nomad week, a women-only retreat in Orkhon Valley, and a three-day archery training session.

1 USD = 24,275.00 VND

Plenty of countries in Southeast Asia are great deals for dollar carriers right now, but we recommend a trip to Vietnam—in part because of the steadily increasing exchange rate, but mostly for the country’s mind-blowing beauty. Hanoi is arguably the most romantic city in the region, but don’t be afraid to venture off the beaten track during your next visit: Places like  Ninh Van Bay and Phú Quốc island have pristine beaches and intimate resorts you won’t find in the more touristed areas.

Like much of South America, Brazil is a good place to visit if you don’t want to break the bank. But the fact that a dollar gets you nearly five Brazilian reals means you can get even better value than usual. Rio de Janeiro is the most obvious place to spend time and money, with incredible restaurants—like  Lasai , a 2023 Hot List winner—just steps away from some of the world’s  best beaches . But don't forget to visit  São Paulo , too, where a younger generation has introduced hip galleries, museums, and bars to several long-neglected neighborhoods.

South Africa

1 USD = 18.30 ZAR

The value of the South African rand has fluctuated a lot over the past few years, but we’re pretty happy with where it is today. (To compare, one U.S. dollar only got you 8.57 ZAR 10 years ago.) Stretch those bucks on the  Test Kitchen ’s 21-course tasting menu in Cape Town , then head into the wilderness at  Singita Castleton Lodge in the Sabi Sand game reserve.

Sri Lanka

Traditional stilt fishermen in Sri Lanka

1 USD = 327.31 SLR

The Sri Lankan rupee has slowly gotten more and more favorable over the past couple of decades, but it completely skyrocketed starting a couple of years ago (a dollar converted to 200 SLR in February 2022, and now look where we are). We’re more excited than ever to explore this incredible island nation, where you can see leafy tea plantations, Buddhist temples, golden beaches, and 200-mile hiking trails in one memorable trip.

1 USD = 525.96 CRC

The Costa Rican colón has depreciated a bit in recent months, but it remains favorable for US travelers. Then there’s the fact that the country’s best asset (i.e. its natural beauty) is mostly free to enjoy. From trekking through the tropical cloud forests in the mountains of Alajuela to surfing off the coast of Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica is one of the world’s best countries for outdoor adventure. (And the  hotels are pretty great , too.)

Philippines

1 USD = 55.89 PHP

We’re never not dreaming about island hopping in the Phillippines. It’s hard to believe that places like Palawan and Siargao are so economically accessible, given that they are some of the most beautiful places on the planet. Even five-star resorts like  Shangri-La Boracay can be reserved for under $350 per night, which is all the incentive we need to book a trip right now.

1 USD = 4,580 MGA

For your next tropical island vacation, skip pricey, popular locations like the Maldives and Bora Bora for inexpensive Madagascar—an Indian Ocean treasure filled with breathtaking rainforests and lemur-filled national parks. Plan your visit around the opening of Namoroka Tsingy Exploration Camp ( scheduled for mid-2024 ), which will feature seven luxury safari tents inside the essentially unvisited Namoroka National Park. Alternately, swing by the island nation as part of a cruise itinerary: Luxe cruise lines like Silversea , Lindblad , Swan Hellenic , and Seabourne have all added the country as a port of call on new voyages.

Cairo Egypt

Cairo, Egypt.

1 USD = 30.93 EGP

Following in the footsteps of pharaohs in Egypt feels like it should be expensive, but the Egyptian pound has skyrocketed this year—that means touring the Pyramids, cruising the Nile, and exploring Cairo has never been more affordable. We’re excited to check out relatively new openings, like St. Regis Cairo and the beach villas at Four Seasons Hotel Alexandria . And we’ve been anxiously awaiting the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum for years now, but it looks like it might actually happen in 2024.

1 USD = 4.67 MYR

Your cash will stretch far in Malaysia, especially if you fill up on street food and explore cities like Kuala Lumpur on foot. It’s also inexpensive (or in some cases, free) to visit the country’s pristine beaches, limestone caves, and some of the most beautiful tea plantations. If you’re ready and willing to shell out the big bucks, however, we highly recommend shacking up at  The Datai Langkawi —it’s definitely expensive but wholly worth it.

1 USD = 83.04 INR

India has always been a cheap travel destination; now that you can get 83 rupees to the dollar, however, the country is more affordable than ever. Hotels run the gamut from $60-per-night bungalows to pricy Oberoi and Six Senses outposts, plus hundreds of options in between. But as long as you don’t hole up in your resort the entire time, you can visit plenty of attractions and dine at local restaurants on an extremely tight budget.

1 USD = 107.45 RSD

Belgrade continues to emerge as one of Europe’s most exciting cultural epicenters, but it’s massively less expensive than, say, Paris or Berlin (at least for now). It’s relatively easy to find hotels under $100, though accommodations aren’t all that important when you spend all night dancing in clubs around the city. But you will want to get some rest to explore Belgrade’s wealth of museums and contemporary art installations, many of which just opened in the  past few years .

Ohrid North Macedonia

Ohrid, North Macedonia

North Macedonia

1 USD = 56.44 MKD

Perhaps it’s because the coastal countries get all the attention, but North Macedonia remains one of the most  criminally underrated (and therefore affordable) countries in Europe. The landlocked nation is a sleeper hit for those in the know, especially if you head to the charming city of Ohrid. It has all the cobbled streets and quaint churches one would expect from a European town, with the added advantage of being right on the shores of the incredibly gorgeous and biodiverse Lake Ohrid.

1 USD = 132.92 NPR

Nepal is one of the cheapest countries to visit for all travelers, but the U.S. dollar is particularly strong there right now. Most people immediately associate Nepal with Mt. Everest, but the tiny nation has much more to offer than bucket-list climbs. Kathmandu is overwhelming at first, but it hides some great hotels and museums once you start digging. Bhaktapur and Patan—both close by in the Kathmandu Valley—are a bit more low-key but still packed with culture.

1 USD = 66.99 GMD

It may be continental Africa’s smallest country but don’t you dare overlook the Gambia . The ultra-affordable nation has long been a coveted spot for wildlife enthusiasts, but it’s starting to rise in the ranks as both a  food destination and luxury cruise  port of call .

1 USD = 15,556.65 IDR

Despite the post- Eat, Pray, Love influx of tourists, Indonesia remains an affordable vacation spot overall. While millions of people flock to Bali (where resort prices are steep in response), you can enjoy a much cheaper and more peaceful trip on  the islands of Sumba and Lombok. And don’t forget about Jakarta, where a solid day includes filling up on greasy noodles and  nasi goreng gila  from makeshift street stalls—all for just a couple of US bucks.

Beach near Ksamil Albania.

Beach near Ksamil, Albania.

1 USD = 93.95 ALL

Albania is much less expensive than other European countries—and it’s a bit under the radar as a tourist destination, which means there’s still a chance to visit before the word gets out and the crowds descend. One of the most enticing reasons to plan a trip is the food: Picture tables filled with rosemary-scented lamb, tart mountain cheeses, blackened sea bass, and bottles of fruit juices. In Tirana, book a stay at Agroturizëm Gjepali , a restaurant turned hotel with river views and doubles starting at just $70.

1 USD = 12,375.00 UZS

Uzbekistan is still on the up-and-up when it comes to foreign travel, which makes it one of the most exciting and affordable destinations in Central Asia. The major cities are filled with both intricate mosques and brutalist monuments—all free to explore—and you’ll be hard-pressed to spend more than $5 per meal at restaurants. There aren’t too many name-brand hotels set up yet, but even places like the Hyatt Regency Tashkent have nightly rates below $170.

26 of the best affordable holiday destinations for 2024

Turkey’s a steal, india offers serious value and packages to the gambia are absurdly cheap. these are the destinations where your pound will go further.

The Goddess of Mercy Temple in George Town, Penang, Malaysia

H ow to unearth a bargain? You could look for somewhere with a favourable exchange rate. You could delve into the cost of staples such as sandwiches, sun cream, buses and beach umbrellas. Or you could trust us, and our sources. Pulling together the latest research by the Post Office, currency specialists and others, we’ve listed 2024’s best-value places to visit. They range from Sri Lanka, Egypt and Turkey to the lesser-sung likes of North Macedonia, Ikaria and Bolivia — via a few surprising candidates in Spain, France and Portugal. Each comes with the typical prices for coffee, food and, of course, a beer.

This article contains affiliate links, which may earn us revenue

1. Ikaria, Greece

Seychelles beach in Ikaria

Lonely Planet recently ventured to name the globe’s ten best-value destinations (in no particular order). One of them was this teeny-tiny Greek island, which is especially good for budget-friendly rooms, even if other costs are hardly low. Best accessed via a flight from Athens, Ikaria hitherto had various other claims to fame: it’s of the world’s four original blue zones, where people live longer than average; it’s where Icarus is said to have crashed after cockily flying too close to the sun; and it’s supposedly the birthplace of pleasure god Dionysos, which perhaps explains all the wineries. The big draw, however, lies in beaches such as Seychelles, christened for its Indian Ocean-esque white sand, pale pebbles and turquoise waters.

2. penang, malaysia.

A rickshaw ride through George Town in Penang

For its Holiday Money Report, another annual publication, Post Office Travel Money analyses the costs of eight typical items — among them a three-course dinner for two, sunscreen and insect repellent — in 40 global destinations. Many of the top performers in 2024 have become more expensive than in 2023, but not so Penang, off Malaysia ’s northwestern coast. A large island where pure shores and rainforests sit alongside Buddhist temples and hawker street food, it has lots of beach hotels happily available in three-figure, flight-inclusive package deals from Britain. At less than £7 for a queue-jump pick, the Penang Hill funicular is similarly economical.

3. Czech Republic

The town of Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic

It’s always nice — for us, at least — when the pound soars in value against another currency, meaning lots more bang for the same buck. That’s the case right now with the Czech koruna, versus which sterling soared by more than 12 per cent since early 2023. As such, you’ll be able to afford more walnutty trdelnik pastries in saintly Cesky Krumlov, extra pints in Pilsen, an additional wine tour in student-powered Brno and a bonus castle visit in Prague. In general, try to limit your time in the capital — which is predictably the most touristy Czech destination — in favour of exploring the rest of this underappreciated, frequently fairytale Central European country.

Average prices Coffee £2, evening meal £10, beer £1.50

• Best things to do in Prague

4. Tokyo, Japan

Shibuya, Tokyo city

Tokyo has a reputation for being expensive — and it certainly can be, especially compared to other parts of Asia — but it’s also great at catering to travellers of every budget. Its capsule hotels, for example, offer horizontal cubicles at prices comparable to a bed in a hostel dorm room but with considerably more privacy, while a piping hot bowl of ramen in a typical restaurant costs as little as £4. There’s plenty to see without spending a penny, from the busy crossing at Shibuya to the Buddhist temple at Senso-ji.

Average prices Coffee £1.80, evening meal £5.50, beer £3

5. Jerez de la Frontera, Spain

Jerez de la Frontera

Home of sherry wines, Jerez is a vibrant Andalusian city that’s managed to escape most of the tourist hordes of nearby Seville, which means prices here are comparatively modest too. At restaurants like Tabanco Plateros, for example, you can get a flight of five sherries with matching cheese and charcuterie for around €10. And of course you can take advantage of the menu del dia , a set lunch menu that generally costs around €15 for two courses plus wine. Touring and tasting through the bodegas in the city is an essential part of any visit here, but otherwise this is a laid-back city where people watching from a terrace cafe is greatly encouraged.

Average prices Coffee 90p, evening meal £12, beer £1.70

Turunc Bay in Marmaris

Despite sterling’s well-documented struggles, it has gained ground on some other faltering currencies. Easily the biggest leap concerns Turkish lira; in 2023 for example, you could get more than twice as much for each pound as you could in 2021. Even allowing for soaring inflation, that means huge savings. The obvious places in Turkey to splash such bonus cash are buzzy, beach-speckled Turquoise Coast resorts such as lively Marmaris, busy Bodrum and quieter Dalyan.

Average prices Coffee £2, evening meal £6.50, beer £2.50

7. Lisbon, Portugal

Tapas Bar 52 in Lisbon

The Post Office’s Travel Money department produces an annual City Costs Barometer charting the best-value European centres. In the most recent edition, Lisbon came top, having barely seen any rise in prices; the average total cost of two nights’ three-star accommodation over a weekend is now estimated to be £121. Aiding the Portuguese capital’s status as western Europe’s most wallet-friendly option are numerous bars serving filling petiscos (small plates) such as octopus salad.

Average prices Coffee £1.50, evening meal £14, beer £2.50

8. Sri Lanka

The coastal fort city of Galle in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka ’s still-recovering currency is offering astounding value to visitors, who are being welcomed back with open arms. In the capital Colombo, opulent hotels with 40m rooftop infinity pools are barely £50 a night. Trains to the Portuguese-era fort city of Galle cost around £5 — in first class — while you can pay around £40 to look for leopards in Yala National Park or take a whale-watching cruise. Then, after glorious days on white-sand beaches, the finest crab curries should bring change from a tenner.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £4, beer £1

• Best hotels in Sri Lanka • Best beaches in Sri Lanka

9. The Gambia

The beach at Serekunda in the Gambia

Mainland Africa’s smallest country packs plenty in. Spellbinding sandy beaches are the Gambia’s most famous attribute, with Cape Point the most Instagram-worthy, but there’s much more to relish: bird, hippo and chimp-watching cruises in River Gambia National Park, leopard-patrolled wetlands and mysterious stone circles. Nevertheless, and despite some excellent beachfront hotels, winter sun packages to this West African country are absurdly cheap. With the shared GMT time zone, you needn’t even worry about jet lag.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £7.50, beer £1

10. Bali, Indonesia

Mount Batur in Bali

This volcanic, tropical Indonesian island can be startlingly affordable — especially if you travel in its shoulder seasons of April to June or September to October, when the weather is usually getting gradually drier or wetter. High-quality budget hotels proliferate, most of Bali ’s beaches are free and activities tend to be a bargain: less than £30 for cookery classes or guided sunrise treks up Mount Batur. Taxis also cost little, as does zooming around on a rented scooter. Food-wise, stick to classic streetside snacks such as nasi jinggo (rice and side dishes such as sambal-fried peanuts, all wrapped in banana leaves) or dine in the affordable restaurants of Canggu and Ubud.

Average prices Coffee £2, evening meal £6.50, beer £3

• Best hotels in Bali

A beach bungalow in Placencia, Belize

In the pint-sized Central American country of Belize you’ll find jaguar-filled jungle, marvellous Maya ruins, caves, coffee farms, Caribbean beaches and, to enable splendid snorkelling and diving, a portion of the world’s second-longest barrier reef. Alongside some eye-wateringly expensive resorts for dot-com squillionaires come excellent boutiques in chilled-out beach towns. A good bet is Placencia, from which a two-dive outing will set you back as little as £125.

Average prices Coffee £3, evening meal £8, beer £3

• Best hotels in Belize

12. Jamaica

Montego Bay beach in Jamaica

According to the Post Office’s 2023 Long Haul Holiday Report, Jamaica remained the best-value destination in the Caribbean. That ranking was based on prices surveyed in the north-coast hub of Montego Bay, a destination for beach-goers, snorkellers and rainforest explorers. The reggae-loving Caribbean island also lays on waterfalls galore, with Viator tours starting from £40. Even Jamaican rum is inexpensive at the airport duty-free.

Average prices Coffee £3, evening meal £13, beer £2.50

• Best all-inclusive hotels in Jamaica • Best things to do in Jamaica

13. Bolivia

Lake Titicaca and Copacabana in Bolivia

Sightseeing trips are shockingly cheap in this landlocked country. Multi-day tours in cross-country vehicles to the epic Salar de Uyuni salt flats (that are turned by rains into a surreal mirror from January to April) can be priced as low as £80. Voyages on Lake Titicaca, taking in floating villages, are often less than £10, while Amazon jungle lodges tend to be more affordable than anywhere else in South America. In fact, the only expensive thing about Bolivia is getting there in the first place. A two-week tour with Exodus will deliver all the highlights; transport and most meals are included.

Average prices Coffee £2, evening meal £5, beer £2.50

• Best places to visit in South America

14. Hong Kong, China

The night market in Kowloon

According to currency-card provider FairFX, sterling has enjoyed great recent growth versus Hong Kong ’s dollar. Although bars and restaurants are often pricey, the vast array of accommodation allows for budget-conscious stays that can be fuelled by the output of the city’s sizzling street-food stalls; the likes of skewered curry fish balls, egg waffles and stinky tofu are wonderfully affordable. Taxis in Hong Kong are also cheap compared with Europe or North America.

Average prices Coffee £4, evening meal £16, beer £5

• Best hotels in Hong Kong • Best things to do in Hong Kong

15. Tallinn, Estonia

The cobbled streets of Tallinn

In the Gonsiori branch of La Prima Pizza, which has topped TripAdvisor’s rankings as the best restaurant in the Estonian capital, those titular pizzas cost from around £8. Serving a wider Italian cuisine than its name implies, the cosy venue also offers homemade limoncello. Elsewhere, you’ll find Nordic-inspired high-end dining — try Rataskaevu 16 — at prices considerably lower than for the same fare in western Europe, plus some superb rates at very cool design hotels. Most are close to the 14th-century old town in Tallinn — 2023’s European Green Capital — and its many free walking tours.

16. Albania

The beach at Dhermi in Himare

Everyone knows that eastern Europe is cheap — yet, even by those standards, prices in Albania are absurd. At a perfectly decent bistro here, couples can eat three courses of traditional food (try tave kosi — baked chicken or lamb in yoghurt), throw in a bottle of wine, and still struggle to spend a tenner. The same goes for entrance fees to the castle of national hero Skanderbeg or sunbeds on the Albanian Riviera amid Himare’s blissful, sandy shores. Luxury stays generally cost a pittance too.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £7, beer £1.50

• Best things to do in Albania

17. Brittany, France

Roscoff in Brittany

Crêpes. Together with their savoury, buckwheat galette counterparts, these omnipresent pancakes are a key reason why Brittany is so doable on a budget. Open at all hours and never expensive, crêperies allow you to save up for splashier seafood dinners. Also helping to cut costs are direct ferries from Portsmouth, Plymouth or Poole, lower petrol costs and an abundance of self-catering accommodation including holiday parks. While here, spend your days on sandy shores or admiring standing stones older than the Pyramids.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £16, beer £5

18. Hoi An, Vietnam

Traditional houses in Hoi An

Frugal travellers are thrilled by large portions of southeast Asia, including Cambodia, Laos and the original backpacker destination, Thailand. But, according to the 2023 Post Office Long Haul Travel Report, Vietnam brought the best value of all — indeed, the city of Hoi An was named the year’s cheapest long-haul destination. Because everything else is so cheap, it’s possible to stay in top-notch hotels and still subsist on £100 a day, including sunscreen, cocktails, coffees and a three-course dinner for two. Local draught beers are especially cheap, while renting a moped will cut taxi costs and help you get to the nearby beaches. Cua Dai’s stretch of white sand is only a couple of miles to the east.

Average prices Coffee £1.50, evening meal £5, beer £1

Kumarakom Lake Resort in Kerala

In a 2023 study, travel-money specialist Eurochange compared the pound’s strength against various countries’ currencies, looking at its value in late 2022 in comparison to the two preceding years. One of its tips was for India , where British currency converters benefitted from an additional £217 worth of rupees for every £1,000 exchanged. From the beach resorts of Goa to Keralan canal cruises or boutique hotels in pink-hued Jaipur, the south Asian country is a great option for anyone economising — aided by its affordable, excellent vegetarian food.

20. Andorra

A mountain restaurant at Comallempla in Andorra

According to the 2023 Post Office Ski Resort Report, prices at most European pistes are steadily increasing. Brilliant value for families, however, is Vallnord-Pal Arinsal in Andorra — a petite, Pyrenean principality wedged between France and Spain — courtesy of free pre-booked lift passes for children aged under 11. These allow a family of four to save over £400, and reduce the weekly cost to an estimated total of £1,784. Not bad for somewhere with a decent range of runs across handsomely wooded slopes.

Average prices Coffee £2, evening meal £14.50, beer £2

21. Bamburgh, UK

Bamburgh Castle in the early morning sunlight

Among more than 100 seaside towns investigated by the consumer body Which? in 2023, Bamburgh was one of just four to receive five stars for value for money. Dramatically overlooked by its namesake Norman castle, Northumberland’s most memorable resort also scored full marks for the quality of its sandy beach, for its tourist attractions — including a golf course — and, unsurprisingly, for that scenery. On days out, visitors can go dolphin-watching in the Farne Islands or cross the causeway to mystical Lindisfarne.

Average prices Coffee £2.50, evening meal £14, beer £3

22. Marrakesh, Morocco

The Koutoubia mosque in Marrakesh

Having analysed 41 prominent holiday locations, the money-saving website Savoo named Morocco ’s most famous city as the cheapest all-inclusive destination outside Europe in 2023. Overlooked by the Atlas Mountains, Marrakesh offers affordable riads around its souks, then bigger, resort-style places in leafier suburbs. Petits taxis are a cheap way to get around and haggling on every price is positively expected.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £9.50, beer £3

23. North Macedonia

The Church of Saint John on Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia

North Macedonia delivers canyons, mountainous national parks and Ottoman-era villages announced by narrow minarets. The standout sight is beach-lined Lake Ohrid, below its clifftop church, with the possibility of biking jaunts, kayak hire or waterside wine tasting. Just as enjoyable is kayaking through the quiet, spellbinding Matka Canyon and looking for lynx around the forests and waterfalls of Mavrovo National Park. Despite all of that, few tourists come, meaning absurdly low prices for Britons, further helped by the absence of the euro.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £6, beer £2

A restaurant in Dahab with views of the Red Sea

Avoid peak season (December to February) and holidays in Egypt can be extremely cost-effective, especially with the pound strong against the local dollar. From £2 shakshuka breakfasts to 50p fava bean falafel wraps, meals sell for a song. Cross-country trains are not only eco-friendlier than flying but far cheaper — 12-hour Cairo to Aswan services can begin at £36, for example. Shop around for well-reviewed excursions — a Nile sunset cruise or a Luxor tour — and consider the Luxor Pass; it’s both decent value and mighty convenient. As for the Red Sea, skip pricey hotspots such as Sharm el-Sheikh in favour of more authentic Dahab.

25. Mombasa, Kenya

Diani beach, south of Mombasa

Rather overshadowed by the country’s safari offerings, Kenya ’s stunning coast ranked as second cheapest in the Post Office’s 2023 Long Haul Travel Report. A string of gorgeous, pearl-white beaches await in and around the city of Mombasa, as do plenty of other cost-efficient options: an old town with elegantly carved wooden doors, diving in the Mombasa Marine National Park and Reserve (entry £14pp), crocodile farms and giraffe-filled wildlife sanctuaries. Use Ubers to get around and visit in October, November, March or April for the best rates.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £5.50, beer £1.50

26. Cape Town, South Africa

On the Rock viewpoint overlooking Camps Bay in Cape Town

South Africa’s most popular city is another place where prodigious Ubers are a cheaper bet than taxis. There’s no charge to walk up Table Mountain (though cable car return tickets from £16 will tempt) and a staple “Gatsby” (a long sub with salad, fries and, often, masala steak) provides stodgy fuel for a song. In July and August many Cape Town restaurants offer special deals, perhaps helping you afford a Winelands tour or trip to see Boulder beach’s penguin colony.

Average prices Coffee £1.50, evening meal £11, beer £2

All-inclusive resorts promise a simplified vacation: One upfront fee covers food, drinks and select activities, so you can relax with a cocktail in hand instead of worrying about your spending. However, not every all-inclusive accommodation option offers the same budget-conscious bang for your buck; some end up costing much more than you may be hoping to pay thanks to extra fees for amenities like kids clubs or meals at specialty restaurants.

These U.S. News picks for affordable resorts are properties where two guests can stay in one room for around $250 per night or less. These prices may not be available year-round: You may need to settle for off-peak travel periods or reserve well in advance for peak seasons (usually December to April for warm destinations). Round-trip flights are not factored into these prices, but some resorts may offer packages that include air travel.

Whether you're dreaming of a family-friendly beach trip or an adults-only escape, these reasonably priced all-inclusive resorts across the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America ensure a memorable travel experience that won't break the bank.

El Cozumeleño Beach Resort: Cozumel, Mexico

Package deals: Romance packages are available, as are hotel and flight combination deals.

If you're hoping to head to the white sands of Cozumel , a popular island just off the coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, El Cozumeleño Beach Resort is one of the cheapest all-inclusive choices. Choose between rooms facing the garden or ocean (typically more expensive), all of which are fitted with balconies.

Rates include free diving lessons in the pool and snorkel equipment rentals, plus other activities like kayaking, tennis and dance classes. Otherwise, spend your days lounging by your choice of five pools (including one indoor option), two hot tubs and a private beach. Dining venues include the upscale Veranda restaurant, the casual Cocal eatery and an assortment of bars. Recent guests describe El Cozumeleño as a great place to relax, with particularly friendly staff. Per-night costs can dip as low as $130 per room and typically don't rise above $200 per night.

Paradise Village Nuevo Vallarta: Mexico

Starting rate: From $155 per night

Package deals: Travelers can choose between the all-inclusive plan, a breakfast buffet plan, a golf package or specials determined by the length of their stays. A "Kids Stay Free" deal for children ages 2 to 12 may also be available in combination with these packages. On top of that, guests can save time and money by booking their hotel rooms and air travel together.

For an affordable option within reach of Puerto Vallarta , consider Paradise Village Nuevo Vallarta, located just under 10 miles northwest of the center of the popular resort city. The hotel's all-inclusive plan encompasses unlimited food and beverages, gratuities, nonmotorized water sports, Wi-Fi access and more.

You'll enjoy access to two lagoon-style pools with slides, hot tubs and waterfalls – plus another lap pool for workouts and a kids area. Meanwhile, palapas and chairs are available at the beach, and guests will have a long list of sporty activities to choose from, including bocce and kayaking.

Restaurant options include Mexican fare, Italian dishes and sushi, plus the Copan Sunset Sky Bar for drinks with a view. Recent visitors say that Paradise Village is a good bet for family vacations, thanks to the plentiful activities at the property.

Hotel Riu Playa Blanca: Río Hato, Panama

Pools at Hotel Riu Playa Blanca.

Package deals: Hotel Riu Playa Blanca lists a variety of "best offers" on its website for select dates throughout the year.

If you'd like to look beyond classic all-inclusive destinations like the Dominican Republic or Mexico, consider Hotel Riu Playa Blanca, located about 80 miles southwest of Panama City, Panama. This modern property, opened in 2014, features a red-and-white color scheme and a sleeker design than your average all-inclusive. Accommodations all come with free Wi-Fi access, a minibar, and a balcony or terrace.

This resort is a good place for a relaxed trip; you'll have access to three main pools (plus another for kids) and the shores of Playa Blanca along the Pacific. Daytime activities include volleyball and a kids club, while live music and dance venues rule the night. In addition to activities and entertainment, the all-inclusive fares cover all meals, snacks and beverages. Dining options include a buffet, an Asian restaurant and a steakhouse, among other options. Past visitors note that the resort is ultra-clean and boasts friendly staff.

Fiesta Resort All Inclusive Central Pacific: Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Package deals: Fiesta Resort offers discounts throughout the year based on the length of your stay.

This all-inclusive resort sits about 55 miles west of Costa Rica's capital city, San Jose, and has the unusual feature of a volcanic black sand beach at its doorstep. Whether you're lounging there or near one of multiple pools, the resort's lush gardens give the feel of a tropical paradise. Activities include hits like water polo and beach volleyball, as well as some more unique options like a coffee class and palm weaving.

The property offers four main restaurants and seven bars, including poolside options. Given Costa Rica's prominence as an ecotourism destination, you may also want to visit the pristine rainforests or tropical islands in the area (however, such excursions aren't included in the hotel rates). Previous guests love the proximity to nature and the option to go on wildlife tours, though some travelers feel the resort caters more to locals.

Note: The property will be renovating its 408 guest rooms in different stages between 2023 and 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions

There's no one agency or website that offers the best deals for every all-inclusive resort. Instead, a solid approach is to use a website like Kayak or Expedia to search for resorts that have cheaper pricing available at the time you want to travel. Then, once you have the names of a few affordable options, you can shop around different agencies or websites to see which one offers the cheapest deal.

If you're on the hunt for an all-inclusive deal, it's important to think about your timing – both in terms of when you're booking and when you want to travel. Better deals tend to involve traveling when there's less demand. According to Laura Sangster, founder of luxury travel agency Caribbean Journey , there's typically less demand for all-inclusive properties in the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America during September and October, which are typically part of hurricane season .

"This is when hotels, including all-inclusive resorts, experience the lowest occupancy and thus offer the best deals in an effort to fill rooms. Historically, these have been very active hurricane months. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, so rates within this period are always less than December to May."

While Sangster notes that it's possible to find last-minute resort deals for travel during these more popular months, she doesn't recommend holding out for such bargains.

"While you might benefit from a decreased hotel rate, airfares currently price the other way and will only be more expensive closer to travel," she says. "It's also important to plan ahead to ensure you are able to secure the room category you want."

Sangster advises travelers to book well in advance to get better prices, particularly if you're hoping to travel during peak season. "We saw very few deals during the 2021 and 2022 peak seasons. All-inclusive resorts seemed to follow a trend of increasing as the weeks and months ticked by," she says. "Our clients who didn't book the initial proposal we prepared often faced higher rates when they came back to book weeks or months later."

Read: The Trick to Finding Cheap Flights

Unfortunately, there isn't one easy answer to this question. It's generally possible to find cruise fares at a cheaper price than all-inclusive vacations, but cruises are known for having more hidden costs that can rack up during your trip. For example, not all cruise fares include alcoholic drinks; you may need to purchase a daily beverage package , which can quickly add to the bill. You may also have to pay more to access some restaurants on board or for excursions when the ship docks.

In contrast, all-inclusive resort rates usually include drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) and meals at all restaurants on the property. It's still possible to incur additional charges for services like spa treatments or some activities like a scuba diving trip, but such fees tend to be for much more obvious extras.

The best way to know whether a cruise or all-inclusive resort is right for you is to do your research before booking. Look at what a cruise fare does and doesn't include, and try to figure out how much you'll need to pay in extra fees to have the vacation you want. You can also check out our breakdown of how much a cruise costs and even browse all-inclusive cruise options to see if they're right for you.

What to Consider When Looking for a Hotel for Your Oahu Vacation

If you’re planning to travel to Oahu on vacation, the first things you will likely look for are hotel prices.

Hawaii itself is such a popular destination that hotels and vacation homes are everywhere. This means you will have to figure out what you want in a place before you book.

You may want to consider the size of the room itself and features such as kitchens or refrigerators. And you will absolutely want to consider the location and convenience of the sights you wish to see.

But, above all, you will want to focus on the price of these accommodations, especially if you are traveling on a fixed budget.

In this article, we will discuss several hotel options for every price range so you can  plan the Hawaii vacation  of your dreams, without breaking your budget.

You will see all the best places to stay in Oahu on a budget, including the cheapest places to stay in Honolulu and some of the best places to stay in Oahu for families who have a bigger budget for a luxury hotel or resort.

Average Nightly Price in Oahu

The average nightly price of hotels in Oahu will vary by your choice of stay, which could be between under 150 dollars a night to well over 300 dollars a night. It just depends on your personal budget.

Among these costs are also costs of activities and food on the island, which are another big factor in the cost of a vacation. So your trip’s nightly price will vary by your choice of stay and your choice of activities.

Many options, such as the beach and parks, may not charge for anything except parking.

However, luxurious spas, scuba options, and other outdoor activity rentals will cost more.

Be sure to check out this guide on  105 tips for Hawaii on a budget to help you plan a trip that is full of fun, sun, and leftover cash.

Which Side of Oahu has the Best Beaches?

The  North Shore  and the South Shore contain the most popular beaches in Oahu for tourist locations,  surfing , and city life.

The West and East shore beaches are also  beautiful  but may not have as many swells for surfing and reefs for sightseeing.

Usually, the best area to stay in Oahu is closest to the beach you want to visit.

Amenities You Can’t Live Without

When planning on booking your place, it is up to you to make a list of amenities you know you will need.

For example, if you don’t want to order takeout every night, you may want a space to grill. Or you might want to have a microwave to  cook a quick meal .

If you go in the heat of summer, you may find that air conditioning is an essential amenity for you. And you may want to have access to a concierge, taxi service, or shuttle.

Many of the Honolulu cheap stays won’t offer these amenities, so be sure to consider if it’s worth it for a little extra cost to have more amenities for your family vacation to the Hawaiian islands.

Book a Family Photo Shoot

Whenever we travel to Hawaii, we almost always book a family photo shoot with Flytographer. They are super easy, affordable, AND it guarantees that I’ll be in some photos. You can get $25 off if you book through this link or use the code HAWAIITRAVEL.
