WHAT IS BLOOD BROTHERS THE MUSICAL ABOUT?
Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences.
Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers . Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone.
It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail).
The superb score includes Bright New Day , Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True .

Before the curtain went up I heard the woman sitting two seats away from me say: “I’ve seen this five times and I still need the tissues.”
I got to find out what just what she meant when Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers opened last night at Hull New Theatre. Not knowing anything about the story, I was intrigued from the very first scene.
A sombre prologue to what was to come, it was a clever place for the tale of twins, Mickey (Sean Jones) and Eddie (Joe Sleight), separated at birth and destined to grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, to begin. The mood brightened almost immediately, with a light-hearted introduction to Mrs Johnstone (Niki Colwell Evans) and her Marilyn Monroe number.

In fact, there were laughs a-plenty in Act One, amid the poignancy and the poverty that bring Mrs Johnstone to give up one of her newborn twin boys to her employer, the childless and desperate Mrs Lyons (Sarah Jane Buckley), in the hope of keeping the rest of her family together. The scenes led by her now-growing-up-fast brood, including “seven, nearly eight” Mickey, were hilarious.
Adults playing children can sometimes fail miserably, I feel; these cast members played their roles with aplomb and were spot-on with their characterisations, including some of those not-so-endearing traits that we all recognise in kids of a certain age. They were sometimes sweet, sometimes disgusting, and the audience loved them.
If we were being lulled into a false sense of security at any point in the musical, the Narrator (Danny Whitehead) was sure to remind us where superstition and actions taken in haste can lead. Act Two wasn’t without its humorous moments but the story began to take on a lot darker tone and troubles were never far away from any of the leading characters.
With the tension building, you could have heard a pin drop in what was a packed theatre. I practically leapt out of my skin a couple of times when the story took dramatic turns on the way to its fateful, tragic conclusion … and so we returned to that opening scene.
I loved everything about this show: the drama, the comedy, the staging and the slick set changes, and most of all the captivating singing from every single cast member, notably Niki Colwell Evans. There can’t have been a dry eye in the house for her rendition of Tell Me It’s Not True; I nearly asked the lady two seats across for one of her tissues during the standing ovation.
Blood Brothers is running at Hull New Theatre until Saturday, July 22. Shows start at 7.30pm nightly, with matinees at 2.30pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Blood Brothers has an age guidance of 12-plus.

“A theatrical gem that deserves all the accolades it has received over the years” – Reviewing Blood Brothers at Hull New Theatre

I was invited to Hull New Theatre this week to see the latest production of Willy Russell’s “Blood Brothers”, and wow. What a great production and cast; I have seen this musical more than once, but this production was especially superb.
The musical Blood Brothers is a captivating masterpiece that weaves together a hauntingly beautiful narrative of class divide, fate, and the power of human connections. Written by Willy Russell, this tragic tale has enthralled audiences for decades, and it’s easy to see why.
From the moment the curtains rise, Blood Brothers grabs hold of your emotions and refuses to let go. Set in Liverpool, the story follows the lives of two brothers, Mickey (Sean Jones) and Eddie (Joe Sleight), who are separated at birth. Raised in different social classes, they grow up worlds apart, yet their paths consistently cross, leading to a fateful and heart-wrenching conclusion.
The genius of Blood Brothers lies in its ability to delve deep into complex social issues while maintaining an undercurrent of hope and humanity. The musical seamlessly explores themes of poverty, inequality, and the destructive nature of societal divisions, shedding light on the inherent challenges faced by individuals born into vastly different circumstances.
Willy Russell’s gripping and poetic lyrics, coupled with his masterful storytelling, create an immersive experience. The audience is transported to the gritty streets of Liverpool, where they bear witness to the struggles, dreams, and aspirations of the characters. The songs, ranging from soulful ballads to rousing ensemble pieces, are unforgettable and leave a lasting impact.
The performances in Blood Brothers are nothing short of extraordinary. The cast’s exceptional talent brings each character to life with depth and authenticity. Their portrayals capture the nuances of the human condition, evoking empathy and genuine emotional investment. The chemistry between the actors playing Mickey and Eddie is particularly remarkable, illustrating the lifelong bond that persists despite their divergent paths. Likewise, their birth mother Mrs Johnstone (Niki Colwell Evans) had the most fabulous singing voice which captivated us from the start. The Narrator (Danny Whitehead) is worthy of special mention as he was constantly on stage, almost like a ghostly figure, interacting with the cast whilst keeping the audience updated.
Another highlight of the musical is the inventive set design, which effortlessly transitions between different time periods and locations. One moment, the street where the Johstone family live and the next, a school classroom, or the living room of Mr &Mrs Lyons (who took the second baby to live with them) The stage becomes a canvas for the characters’ lives, enhancing the narrative and immersing the audience in the story’s rich tapestry.
Blood Brothers is a profoundly moving experience that challenges societal norms and calls attention to the often-cruel consequences of fate and circumstance. It reminds us that, regardless of our backgrounds, we are all interconnected and susceptible to the inescapable hand of destiny.
In conclusion, Blood Brothers is a theatrical gem that deserves all the accolades it has received over the years. Its timeless tale, compelling music, and exceptional performances make it an unforgettable experience. Prepare to be moved, to laugh, and to shed tears as this emotional rollercoaster takes you on a journey you won’t soon forget.
It shows at Hull New Theatre all week until Saturday 22nd, with a merchandise stand in the foyer.

Written by award-winning playwright Willy Russell , few musicals have been received with such acclaim as the multi-award-winning Blood Brothers . Considered ‘one of the best musicals ever written’ ( Sunday Times ), Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” ( Daily Mail ).
This epic tale of Liverpool life started as a play, performed at a Liverpool comprehensive school in 1981, before opening at the Liverpool Playhouse in 1983. The musical has since triumphed across the globe, completing sell out seasons in the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Japan, and scooping up four awards for Best Musical in London and seven Tony Award nominations on Broadway.
The superb score includes A Bright New Day , Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True .
Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins separated at birth, who grow up on the opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with tragic consequences.
When Mrs Johnstone, a young mother, is deserted by her husband and left to her own devices to provide for seven hungry children she takes a job as a housekeeper in order to make ends meet. It is not long before her brittle world crashes around her when she discovers herself to be pregnant yet again – this time with twins! In a moment of weakness and desperation, she enters a secret pact with her employer which leads inexorably to the show’s shattering climax.
Willy Russell is undeniably one of this country’s leading contemporary dramatists. His countless credits include Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine . Educating Rita , originally commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, enjoyed a two-year run in the West End and was made into a movie starring Michael Caine and Julie Walters. Shirley Valentine also made the move from stage to screen in an enormously popular film starring Pauline Collins and Tom Conti. The celebrated on-woman play earned Russell his third Olivier Award and is currently running on the West End at the Duke of York’s Theatre until June 2023, starring Sheridan Smith.

Blood Brothers
About this show.
Musical melodrama set in Liverpool about twins separated at birth and the effects on their personalities as they grow up of ‘nature’ and ‘nurture’. A poor family, already with kids, is blessed with twins, but they can’t cope. The mother cleans at a ‘posh’ house where they are desperate to have kids but can’t and a deal is struck which no-one must know about. Despite the efforts of the new family the boys paths cross time and time again as they grow and one becomes ‘bad’ while the other is ‘good’. Eventually they clash with tragic consequences. The musical is un-usual in having a “narrator” who helps to move the plot along.

Review | Blood Brothers
Last night, in an almost full house, my sister and I had the pleasure of being in the audience at Hull New Theatre to see Blood Brothers on its UK tour. With such a real life depiction of class division, childish (and adult) humour and a gripping and intense second act, it is very clear now why almost every seat was full and why almost the entire theatre were up on their feet applauding it’s poignant end.
Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins Mickey and Edward – two brothers separated at birth but brought together again through an unlikely friendship.
Mrs Johnstone (played tremendously by Lyn Paul) is already living very much below the breadline in the slums of Liverpool. After learning of yet another pregnancy, her husband leaves her and the children for another (younger) woman, forcing her to not only be a homemaker, disciplinarian and nurturer, but now also provider for her poverty-stricken family. Mrs Johnstone’s despair is lifted briefly when she is able to find herself a cleaning job for an upper (middle) class family in a nice area of the city, and begins to have just enough to meet the demands of life with an ever growing family.
But then things become worse again as she learns she is expecting twins! And the thought of feeding 2 more mouths, along with the threat of welfare being involved and some of her kids potentially being taken into care, creates an air of desperation for her. Sharing her fears and worries with her employer – Mrs Lyons – causes her to take advantage of this vulnerable expectant mother and she offers to take one and raise it as her own. Mrs Lyons has faced heartache of her own through infertility and seeing this opportunity to finally have a child, uses all of her charm and promise of a comfortable life for the child, to persuade (and manipulate) Mrs Johnstone to give her one of the babies.
A pact is made between these woman from opposites ends of the social spectrum, and with their familial relationship concealed by their parents, the boys are raised separately – and none the wiser.
Despite years of striving to keep them apart (mainly because of superstitious beliefs), at almost 8 years old the pair find themselves irreversibly intertwined. This takes it’s toll on both mothers (more so Mrs Lyons) and they decide to relocate to the country, severing this unwanted friendship. I love that kids do not see class or status, but are so much more accepting – this was a thought racing round my mind as I watched this friendship unfold and then them deal with the separation. However it didn’t last long, when years later their lives continue to be tangled again due to a relocation of social housing in the country.
Mickey and Edward try to conquer the social divisions, but their friendship is damaged and they are forced to deal with the harsh realities of class consciousness, when Edward leaves to attend Oxford, whilst Mickey spirals into a life of crime and depression.
Everything about Blood Brothers fascinated me so much; from its incredible and stunning set to the powerful music played by the orchestra. Both of which were extremely atmospheric and took us on this wonderful journey of life in a very real, humours and emotive way. It was so impressive.
But, what I loved the most about it was that it unapologetically covers so many gritty and important issues in a raw and powerful way – infertility, poverty, class division, crime and justice, mental health and relationships and infidelity.
The cast were outstanding and portrayed the innocence and frolics of childhood in such a carefree, naive and comical way in Act 1. Which was so impressive when in contrast, they were able to show the dark, distressing and painful struggles of adulthood come Act 2. When childish things are put away and adolescence into adulthood creeps in, the class division suddenly becomes more evident and life for Mickey intensifies. Alexander Patmore (who plays Mickey), was magnificent and gave such a powerful and emotive portrayal of mental health struggle. His transition in each stage of life was very well played and his part in the finale was powerful beyond words.
This is a must see for so many reasons and I can totally see why so many people love it! It certainly opened my mind to the real effects and damage of class division, poverty and superstitious beliefs. It was beautiful, funny, heartbreaking and simply brilliant!
Blood Brothers runs from the 22nd to the 26th of October, 2019 at Hull New Theatre (other dates available around the UK). Tickets are on sale starting at £15 can be booked at the Hull City Hall Box Office – call 01482 300 306 or visit www.hulltheatres.co.uk to book online.
Please note this is and adult show – it contains some bad language, sexual references, crime, death and topics that are hard hitting!
**I received complimentary tickets for the purpose of this review!
This is my 3rd visit to HNT to see Blood Brothers over many years. By far the best to date. This performance moved me to tears at the end. Lynn Paul was fabulous supported by excellent cast. I was with a friend who had not seen the show before and she was riveted throughout. My only tiny criticism and I mean tiny is that the acoustics were not as good as they could have been. In some circumstances they were quite muffled. This by no means spoiled the performance, a very well deserved standing ovation from the majority of the audience.

THE BLOOD BROTHERS reunite for U.S. tour and 'Crimes' reissue
A decade on from their last round of reunion dates, Seattle-formed post-hardcore eccentrics the Blood Brothers have announced they're getting back together for a U.S. tour, which celebrates an upcoming vinyl reissue of their fourth full-length release, Crimes .
After teasing something being on the horizon in an Instagram post yesterday (May 15th), the band have now formally announced their plans to hit stages coast to coast throughout November and December.
The show poster is marked with "Everything will be just awful when we're around," a line taken from "The Shame" off 2003's Ross Robinson -produced …Burn, Piano Island Burn , though the upcoming dates coincide with the October 4th reissue of the following year's Crimes , which was produced by John Goodmanson (Sleater-Kinney, Ceremony)
"As we've been putting together the 20th anniversary reissue of Crimes , what I'm struck by most listening back is the energy," vocalist Jordan Blilie commented in a press statement.
"It feels both feral and weirdly focused, like whatever chemistry we'd been tinkering with had finally crystallized. It was on stage, though, where that energy reached its most joyful, reckless, collective state. It's an experience that never really goes away, and one we wanted to share again. So, we'll be playing a handful of shows this fall. We hope to see you there."
As with last year's BPIB repress, the 20th anniversary edition of Crimes is being presented as a double-vinyl release that now includes b-sides, and a booklet featuring liner notes and era-specific photos. You can pre-order the album here , via Epitaph Records.
The Blood Brothers initially played from the late Nineties to 2007, but reunited for a run of dates in 2014. Band members went on to perform in Past Lives, Head Wound City, Jaguar Love, Fleet Foxes and more.
