Essential Vietnam & Cambodia Tour

Essential Vietnam & Cambodia

Overall trip was interesting. Our guide Sita very pleasant and helpfull. I would recommend changing La Dolce Vita for better hotel. Its dirty. After arrival i unfortunetly took bath instead of shower and had major issues. Mold everywhere causing breathing problems. No possibility to take shower before trip either. Please choose guides who speak better english or send existing onces for classes. We could not understand them. The gentelman from Cambodia touring Killing fields and prison was very good.

Vietnam and Cambodia - 14 Days. Departure every Saturday from Hanoi Tour

Vietnam and Cambodia - 14 Days. Departure every Saturday from Hanoi

We had an amazing time on this tour. Lots of brilliant memories and experiences, we would book again. The good: the places we went to were really nice. A lot of highlights and the route going north to south ticked off all the sites we wanted to see. Finishing in Siem Reap was a great way to relax as well as seeing the incredible Ankor Wat. The tour guides were all very friendly and knowledgeable. We also enjoyed all the hotels and never felt let down by them. The group that we travelled in was small and this really added to the pleasant experience by making it feel more personal. Things for improvement: some of the organisation could have been better. Spending the morning at Hue before flying to HCMC could have been improved by taking the earlier flight and having an afternoon to explore HCMC. Additionally, some of the stops on the way weren't so interesting and felt more like a chance to try and sell us jewellery or gifts.

Cambodia Adventure Tour

Cambodia Adventure

This is Diane Madero, not Zilda McCausland I loved each and every day of the tour with intrepid. Dyka was a phenomenal guide. He shared history, personal experience and Cambodia’s lifestyle and heritage with us. Dyka had a couple guests that really treated him and others poorly. He kept his head up with integrity and kindness while continuing a wonderful tour with all. I would do another Intrepid tour and would love if Dyka or someone like him would guide it. Thank you, Diane Madero

Glimpse Of Indochina In 16 Days (Vietnam,Cambodia,Thailand,Laos) Tour

Glimpse Of Indochina In 16 Days (Vietnam,Cambodia,Thailand,Laos)

We just got home from our getaway to SE Asia and could not be HAPPIER! I'll admit that initially I was a bit skeptical about booking this trip through an online company site, but my concerns were quickly erased. Everything about this adventure was so well thought out and so well organized. Thank you so much to Long Pham with Realistic Asia. His constant communication via WhatsApp was so helpful. Realistic Asia is the local tour company that assisted us throughout every step of our adventure. Long was so attentive to every need. His constant contact was so appreciated. Contact that began well before we left. His guidance and question answering were all so helpful. We never had to worry about a thing. All ground transportation needs were provided, and the vehicles were beautiful. He also arranged for our flights from the different countries while we were there. *We booked our own flight from and back to US because we had miles to use. As we transferred from SE Asian countries throughout our trip Long would contact us the day prior to tell us the name and phone number of the tour guide meeting us at the airport or picking us up at the hotel/s. All of the locations in the itinerary were terrific - and if we wanted to edit/add to the itinerary we were able to do so in advance of the trip. There was even a day that a flight was delayed significantly. Due to that delay, we would have gotten in to our hotel too late for an early am tour. Long rearranged things for us for the next day to accommodate a change of schedule. The guides at each location were exceptional! So knowledgeable, friendly, and spoke English beautifully. I feel like we even made new friends with a few of them. Each of our hotels were awesome places to stay. Long was able to determine which kind of hotels met our needs best by asking about our needs, preferences, budget, etc....*Note: we did choose to upgrade to 4-star hotels and additionally to a 5-star resort in Phuket for our last hotel. (We added on three days in Phuket to our itinerary.) It really was a tailor-made getaway, and we are so happy that we trusted Tour Radar and Realistic Asia by booking this marvelous vacation with them. We will tell all of our friends to check you out and will looking forward to utilizing your services again in the future.

Premium Vietnam & Cambodia

13 days | explore the old-world charm of vietnam and cambodia..

Vietnam insights with Peregrine Adventures: Sample local food at a street market

Immerse yourself in the rich historic and cultural heritage of Vietnam and Cambodia on a 13-day Premium adventure. Uncover the oriental influences of the historic Asian traders, settlers and indigenous people that have made this part of the world a cornerstone for empires and colonies. From navigating the various fusions of east and west in Hoi An, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, to cruising the natural UNESCO World Heritage listed wonderland of Halong Bay and exploring war time monuments, and experiencing one of the world’s great archaeological treasures at Angkor, this journey will share the best of these countries’ history, nature and tradition.

Trip overview

  • Explore the cities of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh with your local leaders who will help to uncover the diverse mix of influences and layered histories of each destination.
  • Taste the best of Vietnamese and Cambodian cuisine during Exclusive Experiences – dine at a social enterprise aimed at providing vocational and hospitality skills to young workers in Hanoi, and enjoy a privately catered breakfast on the shores of the Srah Srang Lake.
  • Soak up your surroundings during two Feature Stays – an overnight cruise in Halong Bay on a traditional junk-style boat and a 3-night stay at a resort in Siem Reap, offering a tropical oasis escape.
  • Enjoy two days of fully guided temple tours in Siem Reap, with in-depth insights into the history of these extraordinary structures and plenty of time at Angkor Wat, plus an Exclusive Experience morning accompanied by a private photography coach.
  • Gain an understanding of local culture during Exclusive Experiences, including a soul-stirring Hat Xam performance, a visit to a working monastery and a tour of a centuries-old pottery village.
  • The bloody rule of the Khmer Rouge is a painful but important part of Cambodian history to confront. If you would rather not visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21) and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, just let your leader know.
  • You’ll visit a number of temples that require a certain level of modesty. You’ll need to bring clothes that cover the shoulders and pants or skirts that go past the knees. A light scarf is also a good idea for covering shoulders and arms when it is hot.
  • In 2024, Khmer New Year (Songkran Festival) will be on the 14th to 16th April. This is a fascinating and rewarding time to see the country, however, you do need to be prepared for some businesses to be closed, tourist sites to be very busy and for transport to be packed as many Cambodians are travelling around the country. Please consider your travel arrangements carefully before booking travel for this period.
  • In 2024, Tet (Lunar New Year) will run from the 9th to the 15th of February. This is a fascinating and rewarding time to see the country, however you do need to be prepared for some businesses to be closed, tourist sites to be very busy and for transport to be packed as many Vietnamese are travelling around the country. Xin chao! Welcome to Hanoi, Vietnam’s vibrant capital city. You’ll be met on arrival at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6pm where you’ll meet your tour leader and fellow travellers. If you arrive early, Hanoi offers plenty of enticing experiences. Perhaps head to the city’s colourful old quarter and explore the charming jumble of shops and cafés, or check out the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum, showcasing ancient through to contemporary Vietnamese art. This evening, join your leader and small group for a welcome dinner at a beautifully decorated restaurant resembling an old-fashioned Vietnamese house. Dive into the exciting world of Vietnamese cuisine as your leader introduces you to a range of classic dishes made with the freshest local ingredients.

  • The Ann Hotel Hanoi or similar (1 night)
  • Complimentary Arrival Transfer
  • Hanoi - Welcome Dinner

The arrival transfer is only valid if arriving on Day 1 or if you have booked pre-trip accommodation through us. Please provide your flight details at the time of booking, or at a minimum 14 days prior to travel, as we may not be able to confirm a request made within 14 days of travel.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Depart Hanoi and travel to Halong Bay, one of the great natural treasures of Vietnam. Board your Feature Stay accommodation for the evening, a gloriously beautiful and traditionally decorated junk-style boat featuring modern conveniences. Set sail in total comfort as unforgettable views of scattered islands and towering limestone outcrops slowly unfold in front of you. Explore the bay while enjoying a pleasant seafood lunch onboard. Learn about the fascinating geography of the region and its importance to the Vietnamese people, visit Surprise Cave where your leader will point out interesting rock formations, and in the warmer months you can choose a swim from Ti Top Island Beach or take an optional kayaking tour. Sit back with a drink on the upper deck and face out to the spirit-lifting view that will be stamped on your memory of Vietnam. Soak in the stunning surroundings with a candlelit seafood dinner on deck before settling in for a night of stargazing and swapping stories.

  • Secret Halong Cruise (Feature Stay) or similar (1 night)
  • Halong Bay - Overnight Boat Cruise
  • Halong Bay - Kayaking Tour - VND250000

Today’s total travel time is approximately 3.5 hours. Your main luggage can be left in the hotel in Hanoi.

Surprise Cave is accessed via staircases but the pathways inside can be a little uneven and slippery, so good walking shoes or sandals will be useful. Swimming in the bay from the boats is banned by the local authority.

Your junk-style boat has twin-share cabins with en suite facilities and air-conditioning. Due to the limited cabins on board, the single supplement is excluded, and accommodation will be on a twin-share basis.

Local authorities permit a limited number of boats to stay overnight in Halong Bay. To ensure all travellers can be accommodated on board available boats, on rare occasions you will stay on a larger boat (with up to 12 cabins) and share your boat with another group. Or your group may be split across different vessels, in which case a group leader will be present on each boat. The route taken and inclusions on board will be the same.

Start your day with a peaceful breakfast and perhaps take part in some Tai Chi on board the boat before returning to Hanoi. This afternoon you’ll take part in a once-in-a-lifetime experience and sit down to a soul-stirring traditional Hat Xam performance. Hat Xam is an art form of Northern Vietnam dating back to the Tran Dynasty. Originally, this was performed by blind performers, and was enjoyed by local working-class audiences, right up until the late 1950s, when a wave of communism deemed all art forms to be corrupting influences. Today these performances are rare, but you and your group will be taken to a private club house and treated to an exclusive performance in one of the few places where artists still sing acoustically. The performance takes around 60 minutes, and includes possible interaction with guests, so be ready to get involved!

  • Hanoi - Hat Xam performance
  • Halong Bay - Tai Chi
  • Hanoi - Street Food Experience Urban Adventure - USD40

Today’s total travel time is approximately 3.5 hours.

This morning you’ll get to know Hanoi’s charms on a half-day tour with your leader. Discover a captivating city where traditional and modern sit side by side as your leader shares knowledge on the Temple of Literature, an oasis of calm in the heart of town. You'll also visit the infamous Hoa Lo Prison, known as the "Hanoi Hilton" which held American POWs. Today’s lunch is extra special as you will visit the fantastic KOTO café, a social enterprise that provides hospitality training and experience while empowering at-risk and disadvantaged youth in Vietnam – not to mention a creative menu of food made with local ingredients. This afternoon you’ll say goodbye to Hanoi and fly south to Danang. Drive on to Hoi An and take in views of lush scenery along the way. Arrive in Hoi An in the late afternoon and check into your boutique accommodation. The rest of the day is yours – maybe make the most of your hotel’s fabulous pool.

  • Mulberry Collection Silk Eco or similar (1 night)
  • Hanoi - Temple of Literature
  • Hanoi - Lunch at KOTO
  • Hanoi - Hoa Lo Prison

Today’s flight is approximately 1 hour and transfer from the airport is approximately 1 hour.

Set off on a tour of Hoi An’s Old Town and discover a blend of traditional treasures and cultural influences from historical traders. Your leader will discuss the city’s history as you wander the pagoda lined streets, visit a Chinese assembly hall, cross the Japanese Covered Bridge, enter the ornately decorated historic house of a former trader and check out a local museum. Hoi An was once a great trading port for pottery, and centuries-old pottery villages still exist to this day. No trip to Vietnam is complete without trying its famed coffee. Your leader will take you to a local coffee shop, where you can savor a delicious coffee of your choice as you watch the hustle and bustle of Hoi An pass you by. Perhaps try a traditional egg coffee - the addition of condensed milk and egg white make this caffeinated beverage into a frothy treat, or a refreshing coconut coffee. Your afternoon is free for your own explorations.

  • Hoi An - Old Town walking tour
  • Hoi An - Farm to Table dining experience at Tra Que Village and Mua restaurant - USD84

The morning is free for you to enjoy more of delightful Hoi An and the surrounding area. Perhaps browse the market for silk and other materials or collect any garments that you might have had crafted by the efficient tailors, or hire a bicycle and ride along the lanes and out to a nice nearby beach. Your leader will have great recommendations for places to eat and drink. In the afternoon, transfer back to Danang and fly to Ho Chi Minh City. Check into your hotel and enjoy a free evening – the bustling food stalls at Cho Ben Thanh market might beckon you over with the sweet and savoury aromas of pho and bun mam. Delicious!

  • Paragon Saigon Hotel or similar (1 night)

Today’s flight is approximately 1 hour and transfer to the airport is approximately 1 hour. Rooms at the Ramada Encore, and in Ho Chi Minh City in general, are compact given the building style and central location.

Head out of the city to the nearby Cu Chi Tunnels, an extensive underground network dug by the Viet Minh and later expanded by the Viet Cong. Enter a widened section of the tunnels with your leader who will help you imagine what life underground must have been like and explain how the tunnels contained hospitals, accommodation and schools, and were used for refuge, storage and as a military base for the Viet Cong. Return to Ho Chi Minh City for a tour of the dynamic city where daily life plays out on the streets. Your leader will take you to the Reunification Palace, formally the Presidential Palace and the site of South Vietnam’s surrender in 1975, before visiting the War Remnants Museum. In the evening, perhaps spend some time with your fellow travellers and enjoy a final dinner at a local restaurant. Your leader will know of some wonderful options.

  • Ho Chi Minh City - Cu Chi Tunnels
  • Ho Chi Minh City - Reunification Palace
  • Ho Chi Minh City - War Remnants Museum
  • Ho Chi Minh City - Notre Dame Cathedral

Sua s'dei! Welcome to Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s lively capital city. You’ll be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel today. If you arrive early, why not go for a stroll and discover the city’s French colonial architecture or check out the National Museum and its fascinating collection of classic Khmer craftsmanship. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm, where you’ll meet your trip leader and fellow travellers. After, join your group for dinner at Malis Restaurant – an upmarket dining spot that’s committed to preserving and serving Cambodia's traditional cuisine. Maybe cap off the night with a cocktail at the Le Moon Rooftop at Amanjaya Pancam Hotel.

  • Aquarius Hotel or similiar (1 night)
  • Phnom Penh - Welcome Dinner

The arrival transfer is only valid if you arrive on Day 1 or have booked pre-trip accommodation through Intrepid. Please provide your flight details at the time of booking or at a minimum of 14 days before travel.

Today your leader will introduce you to the sights of Phnom Penh during a full-day city tour. The private quarters of the Royal Palace are home to King Sihamoni and closed off to the public, but you can visit the sacred Silver Pagoda in the palace complex. Your included visits to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek will tell the story of the tragic legacy of the Khmer Rouge. There is an optional visit to Wat Phnom, the temple that gave rise to the city’s foundation in the 15th century. Tonight is free to grab dinner at your leisure or wander the city’s nighttime atmosphere.

  • Phnom Penh - Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21)
  • Phnom Penh - The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek
  • Phnom Penh - Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda
  • Phnom Penh - Wat Phnom - USD2
  • Phnom Penh - National Museum - USD10
  • Phnom Penh - Cyclo tour - USD4

The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21) and Killing Fields of Choeung Ek are significant parts of the experience here, but if you don't wish to visit them, please inform your leader.

After breakfast this morning, you’ll go on a journey of discovery from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap in a comfortable private vehicle. Discover traditional Cambodian life at Skun Village and learn about the town’s deep-fried tarantulas and other insects, which the locals consume daily. You’ll also visit Santuk Silk Farm to learn about silk production and its work as a social enterprise, employing local women as artisan weavers. Share a simple, rustic local lunch prepared by the weavers before you continue to Siem Reap, stopping to see historic bridges along the way before arriving at your hotel at approximately 5 pm. This tropical oasis boasts three pools and an excellent restaurant with a focus on wellness. Bright and spacious rooms are in harmony with the lush grounds and feature a veranda, private garden and rain showers. Tonight, head out for dinner and a theatre show at Angkor Village Apsara Theatre, where you’ll watch Khmer traditional dance and dine on Khmer favourites.

  • Navutu Dreams Resort & Wellness Retreat (Feature Stay) or similar (1 night)
  • Santuk Silk Farm Tour and Lunch
  • Skun Village Market Stop
  • Siem Reap - Khmer Theater Dinner

Your travel time today will be approximately 5.5 hours.

Sometimes the order of your included activities in Siem Reap may change due to weather, season or other factors. The changes are made to give you the best possible experiences and to get you to places at the best time. Your leader will advise of any changes to the order of your included activities on Day 1.

If you choose, you can embrace a very early start today and experience a sunrise visit to the Angkor complex (optional). After, you'll spend the day discovering the fantastic temples of Angkor. For the first half of the day, you’ll be accompanied by a private Angkor Wat archaeological guide, who will provide expert knowledge and insight along the way. Begin at Angkor Wat – the largest and most complete structure and the only one of Angkor's temples with an entrance facing west. For lunch, visit the Sala Bai Hotel School, where underprivileged local youths learn skills to find gainful employment in the hospitality industry. Enjoy a meal prepared by students at the school, then visit Angkor Thom – the 'Great Royal City' – a temple famous for its series of colossal human faces carved in stone. From here, you’ll head out of town to an ancient working monastery to gain a special insight into the life of a monk and Theravada Buddhism. Meet the monks, enjoy a sacred water blessing for good luck and prosperity and have a red band tied around your wrist to keep you safe in your travels. The rest of the evening can be spent exploring the bars of Siem Reap or relaxing in laidback luxury at your resort.

  • Siem Reap - Angkor Temples Guided Tour
  • Siem Reap - Three day Angkor Pass
  • Siem Reap - Lunch at Sala Bai
  • Siem Reap - Angkor Wat Archaeologist Guide
  • Siem Reap - Phare Circus Ticket - USD18

The Sala Bai Hotel School is closed on public and school holidays, so on these days an alternative restaurant will be used.

After breakfast, it’s off to the Ta Prohm temple, which has large trees embedded in the stone foundations – powerful symbols of nature. Next, visit Banteay Srei to snap some pictures of the temple’s intricate stone carvings. You can head back to the resort or use your ticket for the Angkor ruins to continue exploring the site. The vaulted corridors of Preah Khan are well worth a visit, or you may prefer to spend the afternoon getting to know the town. Tonight, enjoy a final dinner in the Khmer countryside to say farewell to your group and Cambodia. Amid a rustic and romantic setting, you’ll sit down for a private meal in the rice fields of rural Siem Reap .

Mekong Delta, Vietnam

A guide to Vietnam & Cambodia riverboat tours

  • Mekong Delta

By Southeast Asia specialist Thomas

As the Mekong River nears the end of its course from the Tibetan plateau to the South China Sea, it passes from Cambodia into Vietnam before splaying out into the Mekong Delta.

The river is a natural highway that's given rise to great cities, such as Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh , and by contrast the pastoral towns and villages that line its banks and draw life from its waters.

By travelling along the Mekong, you can easily manage Cambodia and Vietnam in a single trip, where you remove the need for internal flights, opting instead to experience the two countries’ landscapes and cultures guided by the ebb and flow of the river.

Why combine a tour of Cambodia and Vietnam?

Monks making their way to the temples of Angkor

The two nations complement each other incredibly well.  Ho Chi Minh City , where the headlamps of a thousand Vespas light up the 19th-century French architecture and glistening skyscrapers, juxtaposes against traditional life along the  Mekong Delta .

Then, by the time you reach Cambodia, the industry of the river is replaced by the uninterrupted vista of rice paddies receding into the distance.

The two cultures entwine at Cambodia's  Tonle Sap lake . Here both Cambodians and Vietnamese — exiles of the war — live in the stilted villages that seemingly float on the lake's calm waters.

Both countries have experienced their own harrowing history. The depravity of the Khmer Rouge is still evident in and around  Phnom Penh , while the  Cu Chi Tunnels near Ho Chi Minh City are a poignant reminder of the Vietnam War.

I'd tactically plan to end your trip at the  temples of Angkor , as nothing surpasses them for a parting impression.

My recommended itinerary for a holiday to Cambodia and Vietnam

Incense fills the air in Cholon Market, Ho Chi Minh City

I usually suggest only covering the south of Vietnam when you tie it together with Cambodia. Vietnam is a vast place and concentrating on one region will give you a better insight than trying to see too much and, as a result, only skimming the surface.

My advice would be to fly into Ho Chi Minh City and spend a few days enjoying the city (memorably for me, discovering Ho Chi Minh City after dark from the back of a Vespa ), followed by a trip through the Mekong Delta by river boat, staying onboard a six-berth vessel for one or several nights.

Which boat to choose to cruise the Mekong

Bassac boat cruising on the Mekong

The Bassac boat is one of my suggested options: a converted rice barge combining tradition, comfort and some wonderful cuisine. For a more intimate experience, a private sampan lets you explore the region at your own pace.

Life along the Mekong Delta

River life along the Mekong Delta

It's just a two-hour drive from  Ho Chi Minh City  to  Cai Be , where you can join the 4,000 km (2,485 mile)-long  Mekong .

The scenery is a lush green tapestry of palm trees and paddy fields interspersed with rows of wooden floating villages and traditional fishing nets attached to the banks of the river.

From your riverboat you switch to a smaller boat able to navigate through the smaller channels of the Delta to stop off at weaving villages and farms.

The Delta is one of the most agriculturally productive areas in Southeast Asia , growing rice to feed Vietnam's expanding population as well as being a focus of fruit growing and fishing.

In coconut groves, farmers will sell you confectionary made from their crops, and you can drink tea with the owners of local fruit farms, where fruits like rambutan and mangosteen are grown.

The area is a major trade route between Vietnam and Cambodia , and the sounds of the floating river market of Cai Rang will rouse you from your sleep on your first full morning on board.

Cai Rang floating market

Fruit and vegetables for sale at the Cai Rang floating market

Traders travel from throughout the southern parts of Cambodia and Vietnam to buy from vessels laden with fresh fruit and vegetables.

One of my most enduring images of the region is the Mekong bustling with boats filled to the gunwales with brightly coloured dragon fruit and mangosteens. Vendors tout their wares on bamboo poles for potential customers to see.

You transfer to a smaller boat to join the throng and, if you wish, barter in what is the biggest example of a floating market along the Delta.

Crossing into Cambodia

Spending time by the river in Phnom Penh

The riverboat ends its journey in  Can Tho , the Delta's biggest city. From here it's a three-hour drive to the border town of  Chau Doc , passing through basket-weaving communities as you go.

It's easy to pick up a speedboat at Chau Doc to take you a further five hours upriver to Phnom Penh .

Here, you can learn more about Khmer Rouge history by visiting the Killing Fields and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the former S-21 prison where part of the mass genocide took place.

From Phnom Penh the route heads to Siem Reap , the gateway city to the temples of Angkor . This journey can be done by car following a six-hour route along the banks of Tonle Sap. Or, to save time, you might prefer a short one-hour flight.

Floating villages on Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake

Kompong Phluk floating village, Tonle Sap Lake

Tonle Sap Lake owes its very existence to the Mekong and it makes a fascinating day out of Siem Reap .

During the wet season, snow-melt in Tibet and the monsoon rains cause the Mekong water levels to rise rapidly, flowing northwest into the lake and increasing its size by up to five times.

It's an enormous body of water in the wet season, yet manages to drain almost completely into the Mekong in the dry season.

The way of life on the lake is deeply entwined with its natural cycles. Exploring by longtail boat enables you to connect with local communities who cope with the huge rise and drop in water levels by building stilted villages that appear to be floating on the lake's surface.

Angkor and my highlight temple, Ta Prohm

The crumbling ruins of Ta Prohm temple

Scattered throughout a huge area of forest, the  temples of Angkor are one of the world's greatest human-built wonders and people from far and wide come to this small corner of northwest Cambodia to marvel at their splendour.

Of all the temples, my personal favourite is Ta Prohm, recognisable by its crumbling buildings part strangled by the enormous roots of silk-cotton and fig trees.

Many of the guidebooks tell you to visit Angkor Wat — the largest temple — at dawn, but I'd steer you to Ta Prohm.

By visiting at sunrise with the benefit of a one-on-one guide, and a lack of other visitors, the experience becomes much more personal.

As the sun breaks, the temple is full of mystique as an eerily beautiful green light penetrates the tree canopy.

Visiting at dawn also gives you the day to explore Siem Reap or just relax by the pool as you near the end of your trip.

Spider whistling

Trip highlights, and the most genuine understanding of what daily life entails here, often come from unexpected meetings with local people and the unplanned detours you make.

About halfway along the drive from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap , I stopped with my guide at a little village where the inhabitants hunt spiders for food.

With my guide as interpreter, we were invited into a local family's home. I remember the fried tarantula laid out on the table, and the big bowl of crickets cooking on the fire. We were then taken on a short walk into the jungle to whistle for tarantulas, and see how they were caught.

Best time to visit Vietnam and Cambodia

Ancient stone carving of an elephant, Phnom Kulen

Vietnam  and  Cambodia  are subject to three different regional microclimates, so the months of March and April are when you'll find the best weather throughout the whole region.

I'd always recommend travelling in green season, from November to April. It presents better value in terms of accommodation and savings can be considerable. There will be certain places where you'll get a heavy downpour in the evening, but don't let that put you off.

Add some beach time in Thailand

White sand beach in Koh Samet

If you want to end your trip on the beach, an option is to tag on a few days at the Thai beach resort of Koh Samet after flying from Siem Reap to Bangkok . It's just a couple of hours' drive from Bangkok, from where you can fly home. Departing from Bangkok is quite often a more cost-effective option, too.

Koh Samet is the best beach in the area without having to travel back into Vietnam, and you can catch a speedboat back to Bangkok airport.

10 Days in Vietnam and Cambodia 2024: Top 6 Itineraries

Vietnam and Cambodia are a popular combo for those who have limited time in Southeast Asia. You can enjoy Halong Bay, the Mekong Delta and Angkor Wat in one trip.

Is 10 days enough to explore Vietnam and Cambodia? Yes. By bordering each other, you can save time in transportation. With 10 days, you're usually suggested to allocate 3-5 days for Cambodia, mainly focusing on Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.

Well, Vietnam has more to explore, typically divided into three regions: northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa), central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue and Da Nang), and south Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc island). For a comfortable tour pace, consider spending 5 to 7 days on just one or two regions.

You can continue reading to explore our well-planned itineraries for inspiration.

For Halong Bay , an overnight cruise helps you to enjoy the stunning seascape leisurely and escape from the big day-trip groups. For a more exclusive experience, contact us to book a private junk or smaller luxury cruise.

After 3 days in the north, fly to the central city— Hoi An . During your 2-day stay, have a walking tour in its lantern-lit ancient town, indulge in a foodie tour, and cycle through the picturesque countryside.

Continue your trip to Ho Chi Minh City . You'll explore this bustling metropolis with visits to the Vietnam War sites and the vibrant floating markets of the Mekong Delta.

For the last 3 days, cross the border into Cambodia and immerse yourself in the ancient splendor—Angkor Wat, Siem Reap. Walk with our scholar to unveil the secrets behind the relics, cycle to less-known temples, and top off your experience with a sunset balloon ride .

The Best of Vietnam and Cambodia Suggested Itinerary

An itinerary that masterfully blends the colourful cities of Cambodia and Vietnam with downtime in tranquil pockets of these mesmerising countries.

Hanoi is the perfect springboard for your journey, awakening your senses in your first three days. Moving through ever-changing gears, you’ll cruise Halong Bay, boat along the Perfume River, and get swept up in the melee of Ho Chi Minh city, ending on a reflective note in the temples of Siem Reap.

Recommended itinerary

The capital of Vietnam is the perfect introduction to your adventure. Between the t’ai chi at dawn, the waft of beef noodle soup in the air, and the horns and revs of scooters, you’ll get that glorious “I’ve arrived!” feeling. A private driver and guide will take you to the city hotspots, returning you to the peaceful sanctuary of the Mövenpick to relax after a busy day exploring.

It would be remiss to visit this part of the world and not see the beautiful Halong Bay. Boarding a traditional-style junk and taking an overnight cruise makes sure you see the best of it. There’s the chance to kayak through caves and find a quiet patch on a private beach, too.

Halong Bay

Halong Bay, Vietnam

You’ll fly from Hanoi to Hue to spend the next couple of nights in a countryside retreat outside Hue. You’re here long enough to spend a day exploring the highlights of Vietnam’s former capital, possibly including traditional dragon boat trip.

Hue, Vietnam

Dragon boat, Hue, Vietnam

Time in Hoi An follows, and from your base at the lovely Almanity Hoi An Resort & Spa, you’ll venture out on a half-day guided walking tour to visit a traditional Vietnamese house and other city highlights. A boat trip along the Thu Bon River allows a different perspective of the city.

Hoi An

Ho Chi Minh City

You’ll fly to Ho Chi Minh City next, formerly known as Saigon. Here, you’ve got four nights to get to know this sensory metropolis. Two full-day tours help fuel your discoveries: the first is with a private driver and guide to take you to the must-see places, and the second is a boat trip along the Mekong Delta, where you’ll get a glimpse into the lives of the local people.

Ho Chi Minh City

You’ll fly to Siem Reap next, checking into Tara Angkor for three final nights. A private tour of Angkor Wat takes you to the most famous spots in this intriguing epicentre of the Khmer civilisation. End the trip on a high and upgrade to a sunset champagne cruise.

Angkor Thom, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Monk at Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Further toppings are also added to complete the taste of the dish. Kuy Teav can be seen everywhere in Cambodia, from the simple food stalls on the streets to luxury fine-dining restaurants. This luscious dish is definitely fit for the gods.

Num banh chok This is a popular dish for breakfast in Cambodia. It is indeed a variant of vermicelli noodles with snakehead gravy, fresh veggies, and herbs. Kroeung is an indispensable part of the dish as the taste of the gravy depends largely on it. Each region would have its own way to make this dish. While Kampot people love to add dried shrimp, peanuts, and fish sauce to their dish, Siem Reap-ers prefer to have more garlic and coconut milk.

Khmer curry The red curry of Khmer people is another must-try food for Cambodia tours. Cambodian curry is far less spicy than the ones in other countries. In fact, it is a coconut-based chili soup, with just a little amount of chili only.

17. Most famous drinks you must try when traveling to Vietnam and Cambodia?

Most famous drinks you must try when traveling to Vietnam  Egg coffee Vietnam is pretty famous for its coffee and you will find coffee shops on every corner of every street. What you might not have known is that there are also a lot of specialty coffees, such as this deliciously frothy egg white coffee which you can purchase in certain cafes in Hanoi. A real treat after a long day sightseeing! Head to the Giang cafe (39 Nguyen Huu Huan) and Dinh Café (13 Đinh Tiên Hoàng) if you want to try it while in Hanoi. Beer  Ta Hien and Bui Vien are normally called "Pho Tay". On Old Quarter of Hanoi, and near Hoan Kiem Lake, Ta Hien has been a famous spot for tourists, especially for foreigners. Moreover, you can explore the street food heaven in Vietnam. Ta Hien is in Hanoi, what about Bui Vien? Bui Vien is the most interesting night stree t in Ho Chi Minh city. It is quite similar to Ta Hien, but it is much more vibrant, sounding and complicated as well.

Wine of the locals (ethnic minorities ) With 54 ethnic minorities, Vietnam cuisines will never disappoint you. Each tribal group will surprise you with different unique food and drink.  What about wine? Yes, when talking about Wine sticky, Vietnamese people will definitely think about this specialty of Kim Son province. It is made from the seeds of the sticky yellow flowers in the rural area in the Red River. Under the skilled hand of the locals, combined with natural water, the wine has a different taste and easy to recognize.

Most famous drinks you must try when traveling to Cambodia Angkor Beer This brand is named after the iconic Angkor temples – the pride of all Cambodian people. The consumption of Angkor Beer could easily overweigh any other beer brands in this Golden Land. It has an impressive slogan: “My country, my beer”. Angkor Beer contains 5.2% to 5.5% alcohol. It is lightly bitter and aromatic, which could easily satisfy even the most discerning beer fans.

Sra Sar Sra Sar is the name of the traditional Cambodian rice wine. The wine is distilled from white rice and is consumed in ordinary days and important occasions. The alcohol content of rice wine is kinda high (up to 40%), but the locals love it. Sra Sar also serves as a medical remedy. People believe it could cure muscle pains and be good for your stomach.

Teuk Ampau Teuk Ampau, also known as sugar cane juice, is another savory drink to try in Cambodia. Sugarcane is not simply an ingredient to make sugar but it is also a favorite food as well as a beverage of Khmer people. In the past, people tore apart the rind of the sugarcane and eat the inner part, which is exhausting and might make your mouth injured. Then the locals squeeze the juice out by machine. The juice is light green and sweet. Teuk Ampau tastes the best if adding some kumquat and ice to.

Sra Thnaot Chu Sra Thnaot Chu is the Khmer name of palm wine. Sugar palm is the national plant of Cambodia and it plays an important role in the life of the locals. Sra Thnaot Chu can be said to be the country whisky of this golden land. The wine is exceptionally fragrant and quite strong. Its taste is not similar to anything else, so don’t forget to take a sip once coming to this country.

18. How is the Vietnam Cambodia rainy season?

Rainy Season in Cambodia lasts from May to September When May knocks the door, the southeast monsoon arrives and Cambodia enters its wet season. There happens to be much rain, accounting for approximately 75% of the annual rainfall. The average daytime temperature falls between 25 and 27 only. However, it does not mean it rains every time throughout the whole season. There would be little and infrequent downpour between May and July, but for the remaining months, it's raining cats and dogs. The frequency of rainfall is rather dense, also.

21. Do's and Don'ts in Vietnam and Cambodia?

Do's and Don'ts in Vietnam

With many different kinds of travel spots and especially safety, Vietnam is a perfect choice for a family holiday. However, there is something that you should pay attention to in order to have the most comfortable trip.

Do's in Vietnam  :

  • Dress discreetly in public
  • Dress conservatively, especially for female travelers and children. The Vietnamese are quite conservative about their clothes, and it would be disrespectful to wear skimpy clothing in public. Dress appropriately not only to feel free to enjoy your trip but more importantly to show your respect to others and especially in sacred places like pagodas and temples.
  • Be careful when crossing the roads
  • Traffic jam is one of the most terrific things that frighten foreigners first time coming to Vietnam. Riding bikes or motorbikes will be such an unforgettable experience. But the story will be more interesting when you try to cross the roads in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city. Don’t stop as you cross the busy roads. Frightening as it can be, just keep walking. The traffic will avoid you. Pick a spot across the road, stare at it and keep walking, no matter what.
  • Make a bargain
  • Overcharging is also one of the most alarming problems of foreigners first time traveling to Vietnam as locals always think that foreigners are rich. However, this issue affects considerably the image of Vietnamese people on tourists' eye when they read reviews on the Internet. Therefore, remember to make bargain whatever you buy, please read the reviews carefully to consult the prices, or just contact us for local tips and tricks at Luxury Travel.

Don'ts:

  • Wear a lot of jewelry or show valuables in public, especially when in Ho Chi Minh City.
  • When walking on streets in Vietnam, especially big cities like Ho Chi Minh City, if you wear a lot of jewelry like rings or even make a phone call, you will be a target for pickpockets or robbers. Also when you can't speak Vietnamese, it will be such a challenge to ask people surrounding you to help you.
  • Express the affection of lovers in public.
  • Western culture encourages or allows people to be free to show their love or affection. By contrast, it is impolite in Eastern culture countries, like in Vietnam.  You can see couples holding hands, but they will not kiss when many people can see that. Thus, avoid kissing your friends or lovers in front of other people in public places.
  • Give money to the beggars on the street or tourist attractions.
  • Actually, beggars are sometimes not beggars. There is another way you can help people in difficult circumstances like donating to the charity. Children are exploited to earn money to groups of people. So be aware of that.

There are a lot of things you should and shouldn't do when coming to Vietnam, but don't worry, if you have any query or need local help, please feel free to call us at Luxury Travel to have an affordable, safe and local journey.

Do's in Cambodia

  • Dress modestly
  • It is absolutely fine to get dressed up comfortably, or even sexily if you are about to go to a pub in Siem Reap or at a pool party at a luxury resort. However, things are not the same if you are about to visit the heritages. Leave your shorts, miniskirts, and any other clothes that are above your knees or reveal too much skin at home. Put on a long pant or a long dress, instead.
  • Show cultural respects
  • It is necessary to show your respect for the Cambodian people and culture. Social class is quite notorious here, so pay attention to your etiquette when meeting the elderly or the monks.
  • That Khmer people are hospitable and honest does not mean you won’t be overcharged when shopping in their markets or shops. Bargaining is a must-do in almost all Asian countries, not just Cambodia.

Don'ts in Cambodia

  • Give money to children and beggars on the streets. Many of these people are forced to do that job and would get nothing even when you give them money. All would come into the wallet of their “boss” instead.
  • Talk about sensitive topics. It is never a should to talk about politics or war with Cambodian people. Especially, they really hate mentioning about Khmer Rouge period, so do not bring them to your conversation.
  • Be culture offensive. Many things sound to be exceptionally unrespectful to Cambodian people such as touching someone's head, using the left hand to ON’Tsgive and receive things, pointing your feet to other people or to Buddha's images, pointing your index finger to others, complaining about their country, and so on.
  • Show affection in public. Cambodia is still a conservative society and they tend to avoid interacting with people of the opposite gender when they are in public. Holding hands, hugging, and kissing are unacceptable, too.
  • Drink tap water. Tap water is not clean, so avoid drinking it. You can use bottled water instead

How to get a visa for Vietnam and Cambodia?

Before getting to any country, you must get your visa. Firstly, check your passport if it is valid for at least 6 months counting from your arrival date.

For both countries, there are 3 main ways to obtain it; which are via an Embassy in your home town, an E-Visa, and a visa on arrival. The first option as well as Vietnam E-visa and Cambodia E-visa have to be prepared prior to your departure to our countries; and apart from the visa itself and your passport which is a must for your travel, you do not need to bring any other documents. Meanwhile, for visa on arrival, remember to bring the approval letter for visa on arrival to Vietnam, 02 passport-sized photos, and cash for the visa stamping fee.

The Cambodia visa stamping fee is US$30 per person, Vietnam visa stamping fee is US$25 per person.

Vietnam and Cambodia packing list

The weather in Vietnam and Cambodia is quite the same, despite the fact that the temperature in Cambodia is higher than in Vietnam. So the packing list is expected to be just one.

Basically, you will need cash or some planned amount on your credit card for your vacation. Most of it will be for main meals, drinking water, sightseeing tickets, laundry, tips, taxi/transportation fee, etc.

  • Transportation

Once you arrive at the airport, you will need a cab to take you to your hotel. This fee is from US$10-20 and will be less in some places such as Ho Chi Minh City where the airport is close to the city center. For other excursions, you can also use a taxi; but there are quite a lot of scams for tourist taxis in big cities and Grab – is the most convenient and cost-saving for private car/taxi services using the basic internet. However this will only easily apply to ones who plan meticulously for all the spots they want to go, the fee can be from US$1.5 – 3/excursion

Food and drink

Street food is incredibly cheap like US$1-2 for a “banh mi”, US$2-2.5 for a bowl of Pho noodles or Bun Bo Hue or Hu Tieu, US$2.5-3 for a plate of chicken rice, etc. A bottle of beer costs US$2 and for a dining out with a set menu, the price is around US$10-15 per person.

Tipping isn’t a norm while traveling, but expected in many countries especially in Vietnam and Cambodia while their tourism is developing.

We have a useful guideline for tipping in Vietnam here, you might want to take a look: Tipping in Vietnam & How to tip in Vietnam

If you already booked the package holidays to Vietnam and Cambodia from your home most tours include lunches and tickets for your touring days so that you do not have to bring much cash in your pocket. You can use US notes for restaurants, tipping, or souvenirs but it is more cost-effective if you convert the majority of the cash into Vietnamese Dong and Cambodia Riel. You can easily do it at the airport in the arriving country.

Medical Items

  • For the safe Vietnam and Cambodia holidays, pack a first-aid kit with bandages, disinfectant, tweezers, and an anti-diarrhea medicine, you can quickly treat cuts and scratches and stop them from getting infected. To avoid some problems that occur with foreign pharmacies like some medicines that are unavailable, poor in quality, or unclear origin, make sure to bring prescripted medications in quantities large enough to use during your trip.
  • Sun cream to avoid the extreme heat and the long day time during summer in Vietnam and Cambodia
  • Insect repellent especially for the countryside area

Clothes made of cotton are highly recommended which will absorb much of your sweat; as Vietnam and Cambodia can be hot and humid all the time. For visiting temples and religious places, choose pants that cover your knees, long skirts, or t-shirts with sleeves and a modest neckline. Shoes, long pants and a water-proof light jacket are suitable for the rainy season.

You do not have to bring a lot of clothes when coming to Vietnam and Cambodia tours as things here are quite cheap and the laundry services are everywhere at fair prices and good quality.

  • Sunglasses and hat
